Restored and Renewed Mystic Seaport’s historic flagship prepares for its first voyage since repairs

It’s hard to overstate the significance of Mystic Seaport’s 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan. The vessel is the last wooden whaling ship in the world and the oldest American commercial ship still afloat. Every day on the Morgan is a day for living history, but July 21, the 172nd anniversary of the ship’s original launch in New Bedford, was one of particular significance. That day saw the Morgan return to the water for the first time after a nearly five-year, $6.9-million restoration. It also marked the start of arguably an even more ambitious effort: the museum’s plan to sail the Morgan for the first time since it arrived in Mystic in 1941. For Seaport President Stephen C. White, the relaunch ceremony was just the latest in a series of milestones that represent the best of what the seaport and its staff have to offer. Restoring an artifact like the Morgan and bringing it to as wide an audience as possible is the museum’s most important purpose, he said. “It just means more than anything we can put into words,” White says of the launch. “Why do we hang the Mona Lisa for people to see? Why should we sail the Morgan? Because we must.” The Morgan was hauled for restoration in November 2008. Workers in the seaport’s historic preservation shipyard repaired or replaced wooden planks on the inside and outside of the hull as necessary, with the goal of retaining as much of the existing vessel as possible. Shipyard Director Quentin Snediker estimates that between 15 and 18% of the Morgan is original to 1841, a remarkable number considering the ship’s 37-voyage whaling career that took it around the world several times. The Morgan’s 38th voyage will begin this spring when the vessel departs Mystic for nearby New London, where it will be outfitted for the voyage and the crew will be trained. From New London, the Morgan will travel to Newport, Vineyard Haven, New Bedford, Provincetown and finally Boston, where it will dock alongside the USS Constitution, before it returns to New London and Mystic. At each port, the Morgan will be accompanied by onshore programs that will include everything from a life-sized model of a whale to seaport role-players pretending to be from the 19th century. “There will be some differences port to port, but a large portion of the exhibit will be the same,” says Seaport Executive Vice President Susan Funk. “On the dock is really a traveling exhibit that’s paired with what’s aboard the vessel.” The voyage will also include live video streams and online content designed to further complement the ship- and shore-based activities. A New Way to Tour Newport What are the smells
that tell you that you’re home? If you’re a Rhode Islander, chances are “the ocean” will come to mind. That’s exactly what graphic designer Kate McLean found when she constructed a Smell Map of Newport last year. She also highlighted other key scents that define the essence of Newport – think suntan oil and watering holes! So what exactly is a Smell Map? Picture a physical map with graphics depicting where specific local scents are found, as well as the range, the intensity and the direction each smell moves in the prevailing local wind. Each scent is carefully selected to represent the character of the location. As a companion to the map itself, the scents are bottled using naturally-occurring ingredients and products. When the map is exhibited, viewers can actually sniff each scent and then identify where in the physical space it is found using the map. To truly understand a place, you have to use more than just your eyesight. “Smell has been underestimated for centuries,” explains Kate. When she began constructing Smell Maps in 2010, she wanted to highlight the power of multi-sensory, non-visual communication. “A Smell Map helps us reconsider our environment from another perspective,” she says. “In the process of re-sensitizing ourselves we often become more aware of other sensory elements, giving us a richer picture of our cities.” Kate, a native of England, has sniffed her way around multiple locations, including Edinburgh, Scotland, and Paris, France. Newport was the first US city she chose to create a Smell Map. Hours of exploration go into identifying the key scents of a city. “Newport was the first location for me to use cycle rides as a part of the process of collecting smell associations for a city,” explains Kate. “The Newport Smell Map involved a lot of people and many miles traveled on foot and bicycle.” To really find the heart of Newport, Kate spoke with local residents about their smell perceptions and associations with their environment. “These smell perceptions are highly subjective but always contain astonishing depth in memories and stories.” Kate describes the smells of Newport as “the smells of summer.” Her Smell Map showcases scents such as the ocean, beach roses, beer bars, juniper bushes, fudge/ cookies/ice cream, birds’ nests and lobster bait. “They epitomize the warmth and the open and friendly nature of the city.” Except for the lobster bait smell, which Kate learned can make fishermen retch but lures in the lobsters like magic. “It was my first ‘intolerable smell’ in the intensity scale I use for the maps!” she says. Although the Newport Smell Map was on display at the Discover Newport Visitor Center last year, it is currently being prepared for a display at Illinois State University later this year. 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Block Island 1. The island’s first inhabitants called it Manisses, which means “Island of the Little God.” 2. Sixteen families first settled the island in 1661; their descendants live here still. 3. A passenger ship called The Palatine once caught fire off the island’s coast, killing all aboard; some say the ghostly ship can still be seen burning on quiet nights. 4. In the winter, fewer than 1,000 people call the island home; the island’s tiny K-12 public school educates about 115 students. 5. The island has had a strong conservation movement since the 1970s, and now, more than 43% is set aside as public open space. The island’s goal is to get to 50 percent. 6. Tradition has it that the island has 365 ponds, one for each day of the year – although modern geographers say it’s more like 300. 7. Once a premier Victorian vacation destination that drew families complete with steamer trunks and full-skirted “bathing costumes,” the island is full of the ghosts of grand hotels that burned down. One such is the Ocean View, just above the town’s post office, where the US Congress once held a summer session. 8. More than 2,000 pleasure boats crowd the Great Salt Pond on an average during July Fourth weekend. 9. The statue of Rebecca at the Well was erected by the Women’s Christian Temperance Movement, but a close look at the modern day statue (a faithful replica of the original) and her grapes and amphora hint that the late-1800s statue supply company may have mixed up the biblical figure with a more wine-friendly Greek goddess, Hebe. 10. Recently retired island nurse Mary Donnelly helped the sick and injured for 50 years and established a local charity, the Mary D Fund, which has been featured on every major news outlet. (Google it.) Imagine yourself going for a pleasure drive on a beautiful summer day. The wind is blowing through your hair, and you stop the car for a minute to appreciate the views. Are you imagining the ocean? harvest acre farm John and Cindy’s harvest acre farm is more off the beaten path on Kingston road in West Kingston. I rarely head that way unless I’m taking the back roads to the beach, but it’s a treasure of a farm, and you should take the time to find it. John and Cindy Duncan love working together on their farm. Despite some family struggles, (a 30-year-old son with cerebral palsy and the premature death of their 15-year-old daughter) they have turned the farm into a destination. Cindy works hard to make it a farm worthy of exploring. From the beautiful perennials in the greenhouses to the farm fresh veggies and the homemade (by Cindy each morning) breads, cookies and pies, there is plenty to enjoy. John and Cindy’s Harvest Acre Farm is located at 425 Kingston Rd., West Kingston. The farm stand is open seven days a week from 10am-6pm.
No matter what challenges the farmers I talked to faced, they were 100% glad they chose farming as their way of life. Their goal is to get you to be as passionate about their products as they are. Here are some reasons for supporting the farms of southern Rhode Island.

It would be impossible not to get excited when you hear the farmers talking about their farms. on Windmist Farm, Martha Neale tells everyone she’s “living the dream,” and Cindy Duncan beamed when talking about planting 1,500 mums at her Harvest Acres. Mike Wojnar of Wojnar Family Farm couldn’t stop smiling when he let me sample one of his hydroponic tomatoes and Patrick Beck couldn’t have been more excited as he crouched in a field of grasses showing me why coastal grass was so good for his New England Grass Fed cows. For many southern rhode Island farmers, farming is way to work with family. Mike Wojnar confessed his favorite farming chore is picking lettuce because he gets to spend quality time with his two sons. Cindy Duncan said the best part of her job is working side by side with her husband. Despite the hard work in running a farm, the Neales have found working together to be rewarding. Farming is a career for those both robust in stature and strong in will. It is a seven-day-a-week job, and the days are long and ceaseless. talking to the farmers, they seemed to have a boundless capacity for work. the Duncans go months without taking days off. (In fact, their next day off is thanksgiving.)
During planting and harvest season, the work is from sunrise to sunset. Even in the “off-season,” farmers keep busy planning for the following year, selling their products and fixing and maintaining the machinery. We all know that farming is tough, back breaking work, but did you know the biggest challenge most farmers face has to do with you? the farmers I talked with all agreed their biggest challenge was convincing people it was worth the time to try their food. once they get customers to try their products, chances are good they will have a repeat customer on their hands. When you think about it, how could their bounty not taste better than grocery store food? Consider lettuce picked today versus lettuce picked a week ago, sealed in a plastic bag and shipped thousands of miles. Even buying organic produce won’t get you the tastiest and freshest product. an organic tomato from California can take up to a week to reach rhode Island, so imagine how long it takes produce from Mexico, Costa rica and beyond to reach the consumer. Local produce is harvested at the peak of perfection and often available to you the same day it’s picked. american consumers are so conditioned to shop at the big box supermarkets, they don’t realize farm fresh produce and meats could be right around the corner from their homes or offices.

Wojnar famiLy farm Mike Wojnar and his two sons, Joshua and adam, operate the Wojnar Family Farm in Saunderstown. they are leasing ten acres of the historic hazard Farm, which has been in existence since the 1700s. the Wojnars updated their farm with two (soon to be three thanks to a grant from the Department of agriculture) hydroponic greenhouses, which enables them to grow vegetables yearround. they harvest 800 heads of lettuce (five varieties) every month as well
as four kinds of tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans and snow peas. In addition to their greenhouse vegetables, the Wojnars also use their land to harvest seasonal vegetables and herbs and do it 100% organically. Wojnar Family Farm is located at 2065 Boston Neck Rd., Saunderstown. Their farm stand is open Monday-Saturday from 9am-5pm. They also sell at the Richmond Farmer’s Market (Saturdays 9am-12:30pm).

One South County couple transforms a beloved beach bungalow into a contemporary coastal gem There was a time, believe it or not, when Rhode Island’s shores were peppered with affordable beach bungalows – thousand of them actually. Decidedly unfussy, absent of air conditioning and with little more than one, maybe two small bedrooms, a single bathroom and tiny kitchen, they were built as big-city escapes to abandon the sweltering urban heat. Newport’s Gilded Age social set may have invented “summering” as a verb, but the bourgeoisie were in search of simpler pleasures. Nancy Kleniewski remembers that time fondly. “My parents were both teachers in Pawtucket,” she says. Every June, after the school year came to a close, Nancy would pile into the car along with her two brothers and parents, and the family would head south to the cooler temperatures of South County. Since 1955, the family had
rented the same humble beach shack on Sand Hill Cove, just steps from Roger Wheeler State Beach. When she speaks of those summertime memories, Nancy’s affection and sentimentality are palpable. “We had all this freedom,” she says with smile. “We had swimming lessons in the morning, maybe come home for lunch, maybe not, and then just be home for supper.” And there was no shortage of friends. “There were so many other families with young kids our age who also spent summers there,” she says. As was common in the area, many properties actually had two shacks on a single plot. Owners would often stay in one and rent out the other to offset the coat. Eventually, the Kleniewskis did the same, buying the same home they rented for so long and renting out the second home on the property.
As the Kleniewski children grew older, Sand Hill Cove continued to cast its alluring spell. Nancy returned to the peaceful coastal enclave every summer even while she was in college. “I worked at the Lighthouse Inn, which isn’t there anymore,” she says, but many longtime locals are likely to remember. Even after she married Bill Davis, whom she met in graduate school in Philadelphia, Nancy returned as did her siblings to relish South County’s summer weekends. Though from the Midwest, the serenity of Sand Hill Cove resonated with Bill. “Once you see the ocean, it’s hard to leave,” he concedes. The couple settled in Massachusetts and enjoyed weekends at the bungalow. Before she passed, Nancy’s mom gave her daughter her blessing to make changes to the homes. “Tear these shacks down,” she said. Because they enjoyed the area so much, Bill
and Nancy wanted to spend more time there, but without heat or insulation, they knew it was time to make some major changes. “We decided to build a year-round house we could vacation to and maybe later retire to,” explains Nancy. “[The property] is only 50’ x 100’, so we knew we didn’t want to build a big house. We wanted a ‘beachy’ feel, but something modern and contemporary.” The couple appreciated the homes crafted by West Kingston-based Davitt Design Build. With numerous projects situated along Rhode Island’s coastal flood plain, the firm is well versed in regulations set by the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and the state’s Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC), which made them the perfect choice for Nancy and Bill’s project. “That whole area used to be strictly beach shacks,” explains August 2013 | SO RHODE ISLAND

Unlike many homeowners, the couple had an enviable advantage. “Any time we can make two houses into one, that’s beneficial,” explains Dean. Though Nancy and Bill did turn to Davitt to spearhead the project, they didn’t exactly show up to the offices empty-handed. The couple had done their homework and had determined they wanted an “upside down” style house. That is, they wanted the main living space – the kitchen, dining area and living room, to be on the second floor. “I originally sketched out a floor plan of an upside down house, and [Davitt] changed some things to comply with the code. We couldn’t build anything in the basement because we’re on the flood plain. We even had to bring

the utilities upstairs,” adds Nancy. “It was a challenge but it worked out well.” “Upside down is becoming more common, especially on the beach,” says Dean. The architectural design capitalizes on the ocean breezes and extraordinary views in the areas people congregate to the most. For Bill and Nancy, the style is ideal. “We can see Block Island, the ferries and the charter boats,” says Nancy. “We watch the kite surfers, surfers and the wildlife,” which can include deer, foxes and ospreys, Bill says. “It’s a little bit of watching the world go by.” In addition to a spacious great room, porch, deck and eye-catching pergola, the couple wanted an updated version of one of the simpler things they appreciated most at the old bungalow: an outdoor shower. Also on the
exterior: a fancy new driveway. “In the old days, everyone just parked on the lawns because there were no curbs,” Nancy says, laughing. This time around, things were different. “We had to provide off street parking to accommodate at least two cars.” But even with such conveniences and creature comforts, plus the aforementioned enviable design elements, Nancy and Bill never set out to keep up with the Joneses. Every inch of the home has a purpose. “We wanted all the amenities but low key, not flashy,” Nancy explains. “We were sad to see [the bungalows] go; there was a sense of simplicity to them we tried to emulate in the house. “ Though things might be different in their corner of Sand Hill Cove than they were when Nancy was growing up, some things remain the same.
Nancy’s brother lives diagonally across the street – still in a beach shack that she suspects will undergo a renovation like hers, and their other brother lives just down the beach. Together, Nancy and Bill know they have a place that is special; one that promises the future without forgetting about the past. “It’s a remarkable house,” Bill says firmly. When asked what she thinks her parents would say if they saw today’s version of their beach bungalows, it’s clear how much this house and land mean to Nancy. “I think they’d be really proud,” she says after a thoughtful pause. “Really proud.”

How long have you been in Narragansett? We’ve owned the store for six years. I used to work as a sales representative for manufacturers of gift items, greeting cards and stationery. For eight years, I represented 45 different lines of products. I’ve also owned retail stores in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Edward is a Distinguished University Professor of Business Administration and the former Dean of the School of Business at URI. What’s in the name, Curiosity & Mischief? We named the store for our two children when they were young - curiosity for our daughter, mischief for our son. What books are beachgoers diving into this year? We carry a wide variety of local history books on Narragansett and Rhode Island. Other summer selections
include Prague Winter by Madeleine Albright, The Obituary Writer by Rhode Island writer Ann Hood and Citizens of London by Lynne Olson. You carry a wide selection of local products. Give us some of your customers’ favorites. We have pictures, photographs, crafts, books and gift items from Rhode Island and the New England area. Customer favorites include photographs of Narragansett taken by both Elaine Stannard and Marc Stuart, prints of historic sites around Rhode Island and other New England villages by graphic artist Donna M. Ives, and books by Rock Village Publishing detailing interesting historical events in Rhode Island. What do you love most about Pier Marketplace in the summer? Pier Marketplace provides us with an opportunity to see long-time customers who come to Narragansett seasonally and newcomers visiting for the day. Outside of the summer months, Pier Marketplace remains busy with weddings, conventions and visitors to URI. We’re working on making Pier Marketplace a year-round shopping experience for Narragansett residents, Rhode Islanders and day-trippers from

Antique lovers rejoice:
in March, Jules’ Antiques and General Store opened its doors, boasting 8,000 square feet of treasured “old” finds from the 17th century to retro 1970s finds all in one delightfully housed location. On the outside, many may recognize the rustic red building on Route 138 that was formerly known as The Richmond Antique Center for the past 13 years. Step inside this charmingly renovated property and be prepared to journey through time and explore an amazing selection of antique and vintage pieces that will tug at your nostalgic heartstrings and beckon you to take a priceless trip down memory lane. Owner Pam Lavoie is no stranger to running a successful small business. Her popular store, Nana’s Jules, offers antiques, fine consignments and handcrafted gifts right down the street at 91 Kingstown Road since 2011. “I’ve always had retail in my blood, but my passion for finding and offering quality antique pieces, in addition to other unique items that will be truly meaningful to a host of customers, was the driving force behind opening my new store,” exudes an excited Pam. The new twist to Lavoie’s old approach with an antique business is the quaint and timeless general store that occupies a large portion of the first floor. Customers will be greeted with
a homespun, fragrant atmosphere of fresh lavender, earthy spices and other subtle reminders of the simpler times in years gone past. A creaky floor board may also welcome you to come inside and browse the thoughtfully displayed venues featuring old-fashioned candy and treats, local cookbooks, organic cleaning products, candles, soaps, tea towels, serving dishes, fun kids toys and plenty more items that will catapult you back in time. There are presently 50 antique dealers housed in Jules’ two-story antiques and general store. Many stayed on board when Lavoie took over this convenient location, but there are also lots of new faces on the premises, and they still welcome additional seasoned, professional antique dealers or amateur collectors to join them as well. Customers and dealers will have the pleasure of interacting with Lavoie’s two partners who are also her children. Son, Chad, is the dealer liaison and daughter, Julie, is the general manager. The name “Jules” was affectionately taken as a play on Julie’s name, and “Nana” is the title Lavoie proudly wears thanks to her four grandsons. “The three of us research and know the inventory in this entire store,” remarks Lavoie. “This way we can be hands on to answer any questions our customers or dealers may have.” In
addition, they offer eBay services for dealers/individuals who have specialized or one-of-a-kind pieces. Those who dabble in antiques for pleasure or die-hard collectors will be pleased with the uncluttered layout and easy to navigate floor plan that offers an intimate yet energized collection of merchandise. Expect to find quality house wares, vintage linens and jewelry, taxidermy pieces, furniture, lighting, rugs, musical instruments, clocks, fine china and glassware, artwork, dolls, rocks and precious stones, repurposed items, and pieces for the garden and patio. Lavoie also specializes in estate services such as assisting with estate sales, assessing and organizing homes and estates for homeowners who may be relocating, downsizing, or dealing with a family member’s death. “Our dealers bring a wonderful, ever changing selection each month. More than anything, we want your visit here to be an experience you’ll remember,” invites Lavoie.

Grilled to Perfection A carnivore’s paradise in Hopkinton not a whole lot going on in Hopkinton around exit one off of Interstate 95. That’s kind of the whole point of Hopkinton. It’s a quiet, rural area where people live because they don’t want to be surrounded by the suburbs, and especially not the big city of Providence. But even in rural spots, people want a place to go out to eat that doesn’t require a 20-minute drive “all the way” to Westerly, and the Pavilion Steak House & Banquets – half a mile from I-95 – has built up its way to being the dining spot for Hopkinton. As usual with places in rural areas, Pavilion has a number of things going for it besides the restaurant. When you pull into the parking lot you’ll notice a mini-golf course as well as a driving range. There are signs for ice cream and golf lessons, and for half the year on Friday nights, they hold a classic car show and barbecue on the grounds. Speaking of those grounds,

there’s a large tent alongside the outdoor patio for the banquets part of the Pavilion name. But we were there to eat at the restaurant, so we headed inside. Inside is a big, beautiful space. It’s wide-open with lots of windows looking out over the range and a cathedral ceiling that almost gives it a nouveau Alpine feeling. The first thing you can’t help but notice as you enter is the gigantic bar with two largescreen televisions and about ten or more beers on tap – many of them local brews from Grey Sail, Foolproof and Cottrell Brewing Company. There was also a wide array of wines and cocktails to enjoy as well. The next thing that caught my eye as we were seated was a centrally located soup and salad bar. I couldn’t remember the last time I was in a restaurant with an all-you-can-eat soup and salad bar, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. All the dishes at Pavilion,

including sandwiches, came with the salad bar, so between the six of us we had a chance to sample just about all of its items. While the salad bar was loaded with typical items, they were fresh and well maintained. The clam chowder was not too thick and heavy, with big cuts of clam, and the endless bread was great for the kids. Even though we had all the soup and salad we could go for, we wanted to try one of the appetizers, so we ordered the Potato Skins with Pulled Pork ($8) – they also offer the options of Bacon & Cheddar or Pastrami Reuben. Clearly different than your typical potato skins, the pulled pork was tasty though the combo with some barbecue sauce and cheese was a little on the sweet side for my taste. On to dinner, which consisted of a range of dishes from Pavilion’s very extensive menu. The dinner menu is actually broken out into two menus: starters and entrées, which are served from lunch to close, and the steak house menu, which is available from 5pm to close. Ostensibly the steakhouse menu is a la carte – pick a protein and a topping or sauce – but every dish from either half of the menu comes with a choice of potato as well. My wife went with the South West
Bacon Burger ($12), which was an eight-ounce burger with pepper-jack cheese, grilled red onion, housecured bacon and chipotle pepper mayo. It was a huge pile of a burger. The sauce was nicely spicy, but not too hot, and the bacon was good. There are about seven burger choices on the menu and you could of course mix-and-match your own toppings, so it’d be an understatement to say Pavilion could have you covered on burger options. From the steakhouse menu I went with the scrod, and my friends ordered a ten-ounce sirloin and the sea scallops. As with the burger, there are a number of different ways to order any of the cuts of beef or seafood. I went with baked and Cajun spiced for the Scrod ($16) and it was very good, nicely cooked so that the fish was flaky but not dry at all. My friend kept his Sirloin Steak simple with a Portabella Demi-glace ($17) and the Sea Scallops were ordered with Pavilion’s Seafood Stuffing ($22) essentially making the dish a baked, stuffed scallop instead of shrimp, which was surprisingly delicious. Also very good were the potato sides. We got all three: mashed, baked and French fries, and they

were fresh and well-prepared. As you can imagine, all of this added up to way too much food to even consider looking at the dessert menu. Pavilion is very generous and well-priced too, especially if you consider you could get a burger or sandwich for around $10-$12, and that includes soup and salad bar as well. It’s definitely an option to consider when you’re near the RI-CT border – perhaps a better choice than the over-priced dining at the

Drink It Up The RI Brew Fest comes To Charlestown Ninigret Park in Charlestown is the setting for the latest can’t miss South County summer event. On August 10, the Rhode Island Brew Fest is providing two beer tasting extravaganzas in the park. Session one is from 1-4pm and session two is from 5-8pm. With 40 breweries providing between three to five styles each, over 150 beers will be available for sampling. Festival organizer Matt Gray is a native Rhode Islander. He grew up in Newport and attended Providence College. Matt hosted the first RI Brew Fest this past winter in the Pawtucket Armory and had many South County residents begging for a similar event in southern RI. Some of the breweries already confirmed to participate include Westerly’s Grey Sail Brewing, Newport Storm, Narragansett Brewing Company, Providence’s Trinity Brew House and Pawtucket’s Foolproof Brewing. A portion of each ticket sold goes towards benefiting the Rhode Island Brewers Guild. Established in 2010, the RIBG is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote beers made in Rhode Island as well as the breweries which brew them. Jennifer Brinton of Grey Sail Brewing also says the RIBG, “facilitate[s] technical collaboration between Rhode Island brewers and advocate[s] for Rhode Island Brewers in government and community affairs.” General Admission tickets are $55 when purchased prior to the event or $60 at the door and include unlimited samplings and a souvenir pint glass. VIP tickets cost $85 ahead of time and $95 at the door. In addition to the perks of a general admission ticket, VIP tickets include an event tshirt, access to a VIP sampling area with select/reserve beers, as well as catered food. The self-service frozen yogurt craze has swept the nation and is now popping up all over Rhode Island. The new store in Westerly is currently the largest Orange Leaf franchise in the nation. how has the community reacted to your juices? The outpouring of support and the level of excitement that we have been graced with has been overwhelming. We are thanked daily for opening and it keeps us motivated to keep working hard to enrich, educate and hopefully improve the health and well being of our customers.

What are some of the health benefits that come with juicing? Juicing and/or having smoothies as part of your everyday diet truly changes you from the inside out. Cleansing your organs, feeding them properly and providing your body with real food has no limits in my opinion. Results that can truly be felt or seen would be an increase in energy levels, weight loss, shinier hair, glowing skin, thicker nails, clarity and on and on. (As of press) we’ve only been open 12 weeks and we have seen dramatic changes in our customers. What do you think about juice fasting? I don’t want to elaborate too much on this because we are not nutritionists.

What is raw Bob’s Organic Juicery? Raw Bob’s is an all organic juice bar where we create green smoothies, fruit smoothies and juice blends by using only fresh fruits and veggies. We have other menu offerings like wheat grass shots, probiotic puddings, organic teas and of course something for the pooch… we make organic frozen pooch pops! how did you start juicing? Our story is really in our name… Dan’s dad (Bob) became ill and we wanted to provide him with a healthier diet. We started making smoothies at home. After a few weeks of doing it consistently we were hooked!

We do ongoing research and I think where I stand is that it is a gateway to better health. You will feel better doing a fast, you will lose weight, there will be some cleansing that will occur, but it’s only the beginning. If juice fasting introduces a person to the whole experience of having smoothies and/or juices as part of your daily diet then I am all for it. However I do feel, whether it be at Raw Bob’s or at home or wherever someone can get their hands on a juice, that cleansing happens organically over time. Our society seems to have no patience and wants a quick fix; therefore they tend to turn to these fasts for that reason. Where do you find inspiration for new juice and smoothie flavors? We try to look at what is in season and start from there. We have created so many cool combinations that a year ago I would have never thought to put together. We also try to come up with a theme for the drink such as one for skin, one after a late night out, one that is low in calories or high in protein and then work from there. What tips can you give to someone who wants to start juicing? Keep it simple. You don’t need to
buy out the produce department in order to have a tasty, nutritious smoothie (or juice). The bottom line is pay now or pay later. For some that is easier said than done, because it can be expensive. I would create a juicing budget for the week and buy what’s on sale. Like I said, sometime less is more because too many flavors can get muddied up. What advantages does using organic produce have on your juice? Studies have found that organic fruits and vegetables contained as much as 40% higher levels of antioxidants, which are believed to reduce the risk of heart disease and many cancers. Organics also had higher levels of beneficial minerals such as zinc. And milk from organically fed herds had antioxidant levels up to 90% higher than milk from conventional herds.

Georgia Hitti’s sea glass jewelry is equal parts art and legacy Great art is often born of pain, and for any mother there is no greater agony than the loss of a child. Shortly after moving to Rhode Island in 2007, Georgia Hitti and her husband, Brandon, got some terrible news while she was pregnant with her second baby: the unborn child had a severe birth defect that would make his survival unlikely. Hitti made the decision to carry the child to term, and part of the pregnant mom’s strategy for coping with the uncertainty was to take long walks on the beach. “All I could do was wait,” she recalls. Unfortunately, the baby did not beat the odds, but all those days on the beach had found her collecting sea glass along with her thoughts. When the pregnancy ended, Hitti began looking into the possibility of making sea glass jewelry, partly as a legacy for the son whose brief life had rekindled her passion for art. As her family grew with a second child, then a third, Hitti decided that in addition to home-schooling her kids (Sicily, now six; Gavin, four; and Annalise, two) she would take the leap into starting a jewelry business. Three to five days a week, mornings are devoted to schoolwork while afternoons are spent walking the rocky beaches of Jamestown – prime territory for collecting beach glass. “We make a nature outing out of it,” she says. “The kids are sometimes better at finding glass than me.” Beach glass doesn’t occur naturally; rather, time and the action of waves over rocks and sand smoothes the sharp edges off pieces of discarded

drink bottles, cosmetic containers and other glassware. Brown and white are fairly common colors; more prized are sea-foam green (typically from old Coke bottles) and cobalt blue (remnants of shattered Noxema containers). Red is rarest of all; much of it can be traced to the bottom glass used in Schlitz beer bottles back in the 1960s. It takes the sea decades to tumble such trash into treasure, but for artists like Hitti, sea glass is the ultimate renewable resource – new supplies are washed ashore daily. A typical one- to two-hour outing at low tide can yield 50-100 pieces of glass, with the best hunting coming during the full moon when tides are slackest, and in winter when fewer people are out combing the beach. Hitti also looks for bits of broken pottery, occasionally finding pieces of blue-on-
white china that likely dates back to the 19th century. Anything with a sharp edge is tossed back so the sea can finish its relentless work. Hitti crafts each piece into a unique work of art, using non-tarnishing silver-plated wire to wrap the unaltered glass and adorn it with spirals and beads before attaching it to a necklace or a mount for earrings. Pieces typically sell for $10-$15 each and can be found online at Etsy.com and locally at the Biomes Marine Education Center in North Kingstown, the Fayerweather House in Kingston, Maxwell’s Made in America in Wickford and at a variety of craft shows. “I want people to be able to afford to buy it and wear it,” Hitti says. “If you come here from Nebraska or somewhere you can take back a one-of-a-kind item that’s completely Rhode Island.” Hitti describes her work as “addictive” and “healing,” and each piece she creates represents a shard of memory for a small life never fully lived, but not forgotten. “It’s not as painful anymore,” she says of the loss of her first son. “It’s how this all started, so that’s how I think of it. With modern day technology and voice-enhancing auto-tuning, it’s easy to fall into the trap of listening to over-processed, catchy tunes. But when it comes down to it, a genuine, passionate artist is hard to come by. Take songwriting influenced by Cat Stevens and Phil Collins, add a hint of instrumentals like oldies-but-goodies Led Zepplin and The Police, and you may just find yourself listening to South Kingstown’s Brian Macinanti. Born and raised in Woburn, Massachusetts, this singer, songwriter and studio guitarist, who goes by the nickname “Mance” – created by people’s constant mispronunciation of his last name plus “some pretty fancy pants [his] grandmother sent [him] off to school with one day... Mance with the fancy pants” – has had a passion for music ever since the first grade. “I had a cousin who I used to visit... her much older brother was a guitar player and I used to hang out as long as I was allowed in his room and listen to him play,” says the passionate artist. “He could listen to almost any song and instantly play it. This was something I knew I wanted to be able to do.” After continuous jam sessions in his cousin’s room, it wasn’t long before Mance learned the basics, playing songs like “Stairway to Heaven” and “Black Dog.” After his first taste of the popular instrument, he purchased his first Mel Bay chord book and taught himself the rest. It wasn’t long before he was playing electric guitar with local bands, always making sure to carry his acoustic with him - his favorite kind of guitar. Mance’s high school graduation in the early ‘90s followed with a schedule of upcoming gigs, further launching his career as a musician. His first show took place at Joyce’s Pub, now called Tara’s Tipperary Tavern, in Matunuck. At the time he was part of a local band called Revels’ Glen, one that played fun, lively Irish music. The gig gained him followers, allowing him to branch out and meet new people. And soon after this Mance met the woman of his dreams at Tara’s and tied the knot, relocating to South Kingstown where he currently lives today. Mance now works as a solo artist and has found his voice – or voices – over time as an artist. “I have a few musical personalities I like to try on,” mentions

Mance plays in a variety of musical styles
the quirky musician. “Most of my influences come through in a riff here or a measure there, [but] it’s so much easier to market yourself if you have a solid comparison to make.” But despite his lack of a musical doppleganger, Mance’s originality continues to gain him followers. Each of his shows contain a mix of original songs with lyrics addressing the common problems we face as humans, the feelings of his past and cover songs by famous artists – singing songs that audiences don’t normally expect. “I’m not super flashy and I don’t do ‘Sweet Caroline’ or ‘American Pie’, but when you walk into a bar and hear me playing ‘Under Pressure,’ my hope is that you abandon your desire to hear those songs that every other acoustic guitar player on the planet already does,” says Mance. Currently, Mance is working on a variety of projects with other bands, including one with a fiddle player from Brigid’s Cross, where he promises that “if the music we make in the studio is half as good as what we’ve done together live, people are in for a treat.” He has even connected up with a writer, Bill McEleney, from his former band
Revels’ Glen, working closely to gain inspiration and ideas for songwriting. This July, the two even paired up for a special show at Tara’s to bring the Irish music back into town. The artist will be showcasing his musical abilities as the summer comes to a close at Tara’s on August 2. To entertain his followers – and even give a taste of his talent to those who are curious – Mance keeps his YouTube channel fresh and up-to-date.
