All Under One Umbrella The Fantastic Umbrella Factory is a unique shopping experience The Fantastic Umbrella Factory – open daily from 10am-5pm after a prolonged winter of limited, seasonal hours – defies immediate description. There are a collection of shops, sure, and a cafe. And there are the nurseries. Oh, and don’t forget the animals: some goats, chickens, ducks and a trio of emus who look and sound like extras from Jurassic Park. There’s a bamboo maze too, you know, just because. All of this exists on an early 19th century farm homestead. Sure, why not. Small Axe Productions occupies the larger building on the grounds and sells an international assortment of handmade goods. Out front is the General Store, which offers a more kitschy assortment of toys and novelty gifts. Other shops offer everything from vintage eyewear to handscreened t-shirts. Out in the back the chickens, goats and dinosaurs… er, emus are kept in pens, but feeding them is encouraged. The Small Axe Cafe offers dishes made with vegetables grown locally and on-site. Art adorns every path and fence post

and the vibrant, fragrant gardens are lovely. On paper this all might sound like a bit much, but in practice it is impressively chill. The Fantastic Umbrella Factory isn’t just a constellation of wacky gift shops, it’s an exceptionally unique
constellation of wacky gift shops. Their anything goes philosophy is more laid back than anarchic, which probably has lots to do with its hippy “je ne sais quoi” versus, say, the cynical “je ne sais ugh” ethos of your more city-variety hipster. It’s that

A New Kind of Monthly Stroll Take your dog out for a night on the town Fill your summer with all things local with a different themed Main Street Stroll in East Greenwich each month. Stroll the beautiful Main Street for shopping, eating and fun activities. First up, grab your pooch and maybe a fun costume (recommended, not required) for a dog parade on June 25. Meet at 5pm in the Back to Basics parking lot (500 Main Street) for a meet and greet with all the other dogs and their owners before the parade starts at 6pm sharp. Merchants will be open late and the sidewalks along the route will be packed with live music, food, vendors and artists. Join in the
parade down Main Street or simply come to watch this exciting puppy-filled event. July’s theme will be a Music on Main Stroll, filling the streets from 5-8pm with the sounds of music – guitarists, singers, DJ’s, instrumentalists and more on July 23. Bring your appetite for August 20’s Taste of East Greenwich Stroll, where EG’s delicious restaurants will set up sampling stations all along the route so you can munch while you stroll and shop. Block Island waters are home to the first offshore wind farm in the nation On April 27, Deepwater Wind broke ground on the Block Island Wind Farm, and it should be a large source of pride that Rhode Island is taking the nation’s first step into offshore wind farming. In this, our state is a trailblazer. Just as we were the first of the colonies to declare independence from British rule, so are we the first of the states to declare independence from fossil fuels and finite resources. Over the next year and a half, five turbines measuring 589 feet high – a solid 161 feet taller than Providence’s Superman Building – will be installed about three miles off the shore of Block Island. The potential benefit will be as much as a 40% reduction in energy costs for Block Islanders, a
reduction of 40,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually and over 300 new jobs. In total, the five turbines will generate 30 megawatts. This is a “one small step, one giant leap” sort of moment. Compared to Nantucket Sound’s legally mired Cape Wind project and its 468 megawatt producing field of 130 turbines, Block Island’s five turbines might look like a very small step in relative terms. But that shouldn’t distract us from its significance. As the first of eleven offshore wind farms in development for the East Coast, the Block Island Wind Farm is a bold step in the right direction. By Any Other Name Tour RI’s gardens with the URI Master Gardeners Ever since their inception
in 1977, the URI Master Gardener Program has been helping RI residents keep the state green and healthy one garden at a time. Now at the URI Garden Tour this month, gardeners statewide will be opening their plots to the public for a multicolored weekend of natural creations. The tour will include 34 gardens, each with a unique theme and method of gardening that reflects the Master Gardener that created it. Amidst the poplars and parsley will be educational materials that will help visitors learn how to nourish

and develop their own plants in the style of the garden they are visiting. Admission will also include an informative guidebook that will highlight the flora of each location and act as guests’ tickets to the gardens. Walk on the Wild Side Animal sanctuaries in Rhode Island offer homes to unusual pets By Amanda M. Grosvenor
Rhode Island’s many animal shelters do a fantastic job of rescuing dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and other household pets and placing them in loving homes. But there are other local organizations that care for and preserve very different types of animals – ones that you’re not likely to find in your typical shelter. You might be surprised to know that there are established sanctuaries, conservation lands and rehabilitation facilities for species that are wild, exotic or rare heritage livestock breeds in Rhode Island. If you want to get up close and personal with hawks, llamas, parrots, sheep, tortoises, goats, possums and other animals you probably don’t encounter every day, these are the spots you should flock to.

If you stop to think about birds that you commonly see in New England, parrots probably aren’t the first species that come to mind – which is why it may be surprising to learn that there is a local organization that houses more than 450 of these intelligent, beautiful, brightly-colored tropical fowl. Often, individuals choose to adopt parrots as pets without realizing that even pet shop parrots are still wild animals. The larger a parrot is, the longer its average lifespan – some live to be as old as many humans! A pet parrot should be viewed as a lifetime commitment, but owners do not always take this into consideration before adopting them, and later decide they no longer wish to take care of them – which is why Marc Johnson decided to found Foster Parrots and the New England Exotic Wildlife Sanctuary. Foster Parrots was established in 2007 with 15 acres in Hope Valley dedicated to “retired” and wild parrots, as well as a few other exotic pets without homes. Right now, the sanctuary is also home to a Patagonian cavy, two rabbits, a large female iguana, eleven aquatic turtles and eight large African spurred tortoises. “As America’s third most popular pet, parrots are the flagship or representative species for wildlife whose suffering in captivity cannot continue to be ignored,” says Foster Parrots Executive Director Karen Windsor. “Foster Parrots’ humane education message is broad and inclusive, asking us to re-examine our trans-species relationships and our responsibilities toward the animals with which we share our homes and our planet.” Foster Parrots offers guided educational tours on an appointment basis, and there are adoption opportunities for those committed and qualified. The increasingly warm weather calls us to venture out and enjoy the fresh air and stunning natural beauty of the Ocean State. If you are out hiking in the woods or walking near the ocean and happen to find an injured wild animal, however, it is important to know that you should not try to bring it to a local domestic animal shelter. Instead, you should call the Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Rhode Island (WRARI), a nonprofit which oversees and operates the Wildlife Clinic of RI – the only wildlife medical/rehabilitation facility in the state. Since 1993, the clinic has served as the first step in a process where injured or orphaned wild animals are brought, evaluated, rehabilitated and later placed in various sanctuaries and conservatories in the area, depending on the species and type of injury. The Wildlife Clinic is made up of a group of both volunteer and staff veterinarians and rehabilitators who annually take in 3,200-3,500 birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals. That number is increasing each year.
“We are not an animal removal service, and we will not trap and relocate animals, as that is illegal in Rhode Island,” says Director of Operations Arianna L. Mouradjian, Esq. “We do, however, try to alleviate human/wildlife conflict through public education, and will work with people needing assistance with wildlife issues. Each animal is provided the care it needs for the purpose of eventual release back to the wild,” Arianna explains. WRARI hosts numerous educational and fundraising events at various locations throughout the year, including a spring “Baby Shower,” Earth Day at Roger Williams Zoo, a Pet Expo at the Convention Center, Environmental Awareness Day at Narragansett Beach, Raptor Weekend at the Audubon Center in Bristol, a winter buffet dinner and silent auction, and more. Born to be Wild
Born to Be Wild (BTBW) is the only licensed rehabilitation center specializing in birds of prey, also known as raptors. The non-profit center was founded in 1998 and incorporated in 2000. Its four acres in the town of Bradford house about 65 raptors and two dozen other species of birds and mammals every year, providing food and medical care for them with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into the wild. “Most birds of prey at the sanctuary have been hit by cars; others fly into manmade obstacles like wires, buildings and windows,” says Vivian Max-

son, President of BTBW. “As the number of injured raptors increases every year, a challenge for all nature shelters along the East Coast is providing enough food to feed them. They require a whole animal diet – mainly mice and rats, and we’ve always had a donation of laboratory mice, however a major laboratory is closing here in New England, which has affected many raptor centers. If another source is not found, the cost of purchasing the mice is going to lower the number of patients we are able to take in.” BTBW gives private guided tours of the sanctuary by appointment only for the price of a donation to the birds’ care, and also offers off-site educational programs for audiences of all sizes. Swiss Village Farm
Swiss Village Farm (SVF) in Newport is a special breed of organization even among non-traditional animal conservation groups, fostering a unique mission and purpose. Although Swiss Village Farm’s animals are not technically “wild,” they also aren’t the types of animals typically found in someone’s home. With the motto, “A Bridge to the Future for Heritage Breeds,” SVF’s non-profit operating foundation is dedicated to preserving lineages of endangered heritage livestock species through the cryopreservation of germplasm. Fourteen buildings house SVF’s offices, laboratories, infirmary, a conference room and workshops, where on-site staff works with veterinarians from the Tufts University Cummings School

of Veterinary Medicine to collect genetic materials, which are then used to breed the next generation of these rare animals and preserve biodiversity. The organization works with various breeders. Some animals are “on loan,” while others are purchased outright. The ultimate goal is to return the animals back to breeding populations. Visitors are allowed to tour SVF just one day each year. This year’s date will be Saturday, June 13 from 9am-3pm. This free public event offers a rare peek into the labs and facilities, the chance to meet veterinarians and scientists, as well as live cryogenics and sheep shearing demonstrations. If you can’t make it to Visitors Day, taking a scenic drive near Fort Adams Park will usually afford some great animal watching as llamas, sheep, goats, ponies and cows graze on Newport’s green, hilly pastures. SVF is also currently holding a lecture series to raise awareness about local farming systems, sustainable agriculture and conservation. For being on the opposite end of the country, Cresent City has a strong enough influence on Rhode Island, as evidenced by the fact that it’s pretty easy to get a decent Sazerac and Shrimp Po’Boy around here. But one thing we will never do as well as them is jazz: the body swaying, on-your-feet kind of music that permeates every corner of NOLA. Return to Your Roots
You might not think of Charlestown as a hub of Southern music, but that’s just because you haven’t been listening hard enough. David and Tricia Evangelista are setting sail for the next part of their life’s journey

It’s not an uncommon daydream: quitting your job, selling most of your belongings, buying a beautiful boat and spending your days sauntering around wherever the saltwater seas take you. David and Tricia Evangelista of Jamestown, however, are embracing a similar reality. By the end of the year, David will be wrapping up his career as an engineer and he and Tricia made a plan to make their recently purchased 48-foot Kadey Krogen trawler better reflect their personal style. “It’s a 2008 and in perfect condition. The previous owners took immaculate care of it and had the interior design professionally done,” explains Tricia. “We wanted to make it our taste, just like you would a home.” Tried and
true Rhode Islanders, the Evangelistas were looking for the boat to celebrate their Ocean State roots by creating a warm and welcoming look and feel with classic nautical stylings. “I have used virtually that same color scheme on the last three boats: simple but classic,” says Tricia, a lifelong sailor. The boat’s interior and the soft goods design was a critical element as the vessel was purchased to be much more than just a summer weekend toy. “We’re going to move aboard full time and move the boat down South to live aboard in the winter months,” explains Tricia. Though she’s the first to say she has some definite preferences, Tricia wanted to enlist the help of a professional. “For me, I needed somebody
to bounce things off of because it’s not my area of expertise. I knew what I liked and what I didn’t like but I’m an accountant and my husband is an engineer; we’re not what I would call creative,” she says with a laugh. When the Evangelistas were enjoying the afternoon at the Newport International Boat Show, Tricia’s eyes were drawn to Ally Maloney’s booth promoting her business, Maloney’s Interiors. Ally, a Warren-based designer and an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers, the oldest, largest and leading professional organization for interior designers, had decorated her exhibition booth in the exact palette that Tricia sought for the couple’s boat. The two talked and
it seemed a picture-perfect match from the start. “It’s not their first boat, so she definitely knew what she liked and what she didn’t,” agrees Ally, but the designer also knew it was important to push Tricia slightly outside her comfort zone and introduce her to new patterns, new designs and new lines. The result was a dynamic collaboration resulting in a proud designer, an over-the-moon client and a stunningly warm, welcoming boat interior executed with traditional navy blues, creamy whites and whimsical but subtle patterns including starfish and coral. “I like to mix prints and patterns in a cohesive way,” explains Ally. differences between when she designs a residential interior versus when she designs a boat interior is that with the latter, most spaces have duel functions and the fabrics need to be more than beautiful. They need to be functional, durable and in most cases, water-repellant, all while being stylish and comfortable. “I try not to be too nautical or predictable,” says Ally, cautioning that the look goes wrong when it gets too literal. Multiple patterns can create a layered look, especially when every inch counts, like

on a boat. “She brought all kinds of sample books here to the boat and I would pull out the ones that would catch my eye and she would find coordinating fabrics to go with it,” explains Tricia about the process. Ally’s dedication to the craft and to her clients is what Tricia says made the renovation project an exciting and rewarding experience, especially when the last of the cushions arrived last month and fit perfectly in their admittedly snug spaces. “I could not be happier with
the quality of the workmanship,” says Tricia. “Every piece is beyond my expectations. I have had cushions done before and these look brand new, they fit, the liners are perfect… everything fits perfectly.” Working with a knowledgeable professional, explains Tricia, opened new doors and offered new possibilities for the boat. “We had to work with some of the fabrics that were already here,” she says. But Ally introduced her to lines she had never heard of, even though she’s been on the water her
entire life. “Her knowledge of the various quality of products and vendors… I think in general it was way too big a project to tackle myself.” Just in time for the summer season, the Evangelista’s Kadey Krogen cruiser is in Wickford – its home harbor – and is ready to power through local waters and later, down South, all in no hurry whatsoever. “It goes slow, about seven knots,” describes Tricia of the single engine boat. “It’s very comfortable underway… we’ve been looking forward to it for a long time.”

Is that the sun? Heck yes it is! And I’ve been bathing in it every single second I can spare since the doldrums of this brutal winter have left the area. Though the rays are something I savor, the beach can wreak havoc on my appearance. After a long day in the humid heat and dipping into the salty waves, my look could use a little TLC. If you’ve ever craved a day of sun followed by an afternoon of beauty to make the most of your beach day weekends, then Uptown Salon and Spa in Westerly has everything you could possibly need. Nestled into the side of busy route one, Uptown is a sanctuary of every kind of beauty bliss you could look for. Once you walk into the doors, the large size of the space can be surprising. The salon and spa have two whole floors of fun safari-themed details and beautiful dark wood accents that really drive home the feeling of oasis. The bottom floor houses the large salon area as well as the manicure stations and a room dedicated to pedicures. Upstairs you can find an array of spa treatment rooms and two large restrooms with showers, especially provided for those coming from the beach. I was in for some great treatments that I had selected from Uptown’s beauty bar menu, which offers a variety of blowout and makeup style combos. You can even add on services to your menu choices (I added a manicure and a Weekapaug Pedicure.) After a tour of all the amenities, my stylist Nancy brought me into the salon area where we chatted about what ideas I had about my look for the day. With my curly, fine hair, I opted for the Uptown Girl blowout, which promised me a straight and smooth style with volume. We started my blowout with a wash using MoroccanOil volumizing shampoo and conditioner, which from the start already felt like it was giving me some much needed lift. As Nancy says, “85% of bad hair days come from using the wrong kind of shampoo.“ (She’s totally right.) She also applied some root boost and just a bit of oil on the ends of my hair before she expertly dried

my hair section by section with a dryer with a nozzle attachment and a large round brush. She also made sure to thoroughly dry the underside of each section while pulling the hair towards the crown of my head to make sure I got adequate volume during the drying process, which resulted in some serious ScarJo-level locks. After my style was set with some medium hold spray, we were off to the makeup area to chat about my makeup application. I’m pretty much a creature of habit, I religiously wear a black liquid cat eye with mascara and filled in brows, and that’s about it. So, I asked Nancy to help me try out something different. She worked with a combination of glo minerals and La Bella Donna makeup on my skin, both of which are mineral-based and are good for all skin types. Using an eyeshadow pallet that offered a combination of light browns and an interesting smoky navy color, Nancy started the look. She explained every step of the makeup application and showed me with the mirror as she went, in case I wanted to attempt it myself at home, which helped me learn a few new tricks. She showed me how she layered the colors and her method of filling in brows and after a slick of a rosy lip shade that promised to last all
day I was done. My new bronzy look conveyed the “just from the beach but better” vibe that I was going for. My final stop of the day after hair and makeup was for nail treatments. My Weekapaug Pedicure included a foot scrub and treatment followed by a polish. After a delightful soak in the colorful copper tub, I chose the hydrating MoraccanOil scrub followed by a paraffin treatment. After a couple coats of polish by my manicurist, my feet were soft and sandal-ready. My pedicure was followed up with a classic manicure where my nails were salvaged from their usual state of disrepair. My hands were massaged and my cuticles tamed and after some shaping and polish, my nails were looking as good as new. And with that, my bubblegum-colored polish was the cherry atop my extravagant beach day sundae. As my day of beauty can attest to, Uptown offers a wide variety of treatments for any of your beauty and wellness needs. covers. The similarities are not bad things; Jacky’s is one of my favorite places to eat. Since Jason’s isn’t quite as grand as the Jacky’s Waterplace and Sushi Bar in Providence or the Mineral Spring Avenue location in North Providence, the prices are generally a little less expensive. The good news is, despite the lower prices, the food at Jason’s is just as good. I met my mother at Jason’s for a lunch over my spring vacation. From 11:30am-3pm, Monday-Saturday, Jason’s offers lunch specials. For $7.50, you can choose one entrée, that is accompanied by three chicken fingers and either white rice, brown rice or plain fried rice. With 40 entrée choices, you can’t go wrong. There are also specials available from the sushi bar, which include one of their specialty rolls accompanied by either soup or salad. That price varies depending on the roll you select. Since I was on vacation, I started with a Pineapple Mojito ($8). It was sweet, tasty and served in a large hurricane glass. My mother was in the middle of her workday, so she opted for a pot of Oolong Tea ($1). It was piping hot, served in delicate ceramic tea cups and she was thrilled with it. To start our meal, we shared a trio of appetizers. We both love Shrimp Nime Chow ($5), and this version was well executed. The ingredients were fresh, and the peanut dipping sauce was per-

fect. We also tried the Scallion Pancakes ($5.50), and they were everything you are looking for in a scallion pancake – crisp on the outside and slightly doughy in the middle with lots of good scallion flavor coming through. Lastly, we wanted to try something from the sushi bar. Jason’s offers a wide variety of sushi options, including 23 special fusion roll choices, but my mother is still a sushi
newbie, so we didn’t go too crazy with our ordering. We stuck with the classic Spicy Shrimp Maki ($6). Again, we commented on how fresh all of the ingredients were in our roll. If you’ve never tried sushi before, the Spicy Shrimp maki is a good beginner choice. It’s simply cooked shrimp, avocado, tobiko (fish roe) and a spicy mayonnaise. If you’re more adventurous, Jason’s has you covered too. The Lobster Passion Roll ($15) includes tempura lobster, avocado, pineapple, cream cheese, mayo, wonton skin, yellow soy paper and it’s served with lobster sauce and blueberry mix. When it came time to order our entrées, our poor waitress was beside herself that we didn’t want the luncheon specials. We were both looking for leftovers to enjoy later in the week; otherwise we would have picked the specials. I ordered what the menu called the restaurant’s “most popular dish,” which was General Tso’s Chicken ($13). Despite there being a chili pepper on the menu warning me the dish was spicy, this version of General Tso’s was more sweet than spicy. However, what made this dish jump above most other versions was the quality of the chicken. Some Asian restaurants bank on you not noticing the gristly, unappetizing meat by camouflaging it with

Growing up in North Kingstown, I was no stranger to Asian food. My grandparents often took my brother and me to Jade Palace, which inexplicably served Parker House Rolls before the meal. We loved getting the Pu Pu Platter for two, mostly because the Sterno flame in the middle of the platter was fun, and we loved saying Pu Pu. In high school, my friends and I hung out in East Greenwich at Cathay Garden. For $5, we had our fill of beef teriyaki sticks and crab rangoons from the buffet. Since then, I’ve eaten at far superior Chinese food restaurants with my brother in the cities where he has lived – Chicago, New York and Philadelphia. Rhode Island still has its share of hole-in-the-wall Asian spots, but Jacky Ko of Jacky’s Restaurants revolutionized Chinese dining here, and now his cousin Jason Ko has brought Jacky’s concept to East Greenwich. Jason’s Restaurant and Sushi Bar is located in the former spot of Butcher Block Meats (across from the Benny’s Plaza) on Post Road. The restaurant borrows many features from Jacky’s more upscale restaurants (as opposed to his Galaxie chain). The light fixtures are identical, and the meticulous stonework adorning the walls in the dining room is also familiar. Even the menus can be placed side-by-side and matched up tit for tat – right down to the leather embossed

heaps of sauce and thick deep fried batter. Not at Jason’s; the chicken didn’t need to hide. I had plenty to enjoy that day and also plenty to take home for a future lunch. My mother wanted to try something different and ordered the Grilled Chicken and Crispy Shrimp ($17). She received two large, sliced chicken cutlets delicately covered with Jason’s teriyaki sauce and a mound of fried shrimp. There was a bowl of spicy, sweet and sour sauce on the side. The sauce was delicious, and I loved how they wisely chose to serve it on the side. Both meals were served with large bowls of white or brown rice and steamed broccoli. Jacky Ko has been changing Asian cuisine in Rhode Island for decades now. In North Providence, he actually has two restaurants succeeding less than a mile apart. With restaurants in
Cumberland, Bristol, North Providence and Downtown Providence, it was about time for the empire to expand to southern Rhode Island. Jason’s might not have the same name, but it has the same excellent quality Jacky’s has been known for. The next time you’re in the mood for sushi, wonton soup or chicken wings (I recommend them with the oyster sauce), give it a try. If my fortune from my lunch date is any indication, you just might see me there because I “will live a long life and eat many fortune cookies.”

For The Love of Food Suzie Q’s is North Kingston’s new delicious diner The cedar-shingled building on Boston Neck Road in North Kingston has been a restaurant for decades, under various owners. This is a place for a menu that requires no explanation, a place for families, value and family service. It’s a place that needs locals who prefer a certain table and make it a routine. Bob Finocchiaro, its new owner, gets all that. He opened Suzie Q’s Eatery on March 3, and wants to be that new, old local fixture. Westerly born, and a graduate of Johnson & Wales, he said he’d “had enough” of upstate, and just “likes the people, the family, the area.” If you are going to do a homecoming in restaurant form, an unpretentious breakfast and lunch spot is a pretty good call. Running it with your family is an even better one,. When asking for their positions, instead, Bob explains his sons “do what needs to be done,” and “hopefully they’ll run the place one day.” While he speaks affectionately of the “old building, with a coziness to it,” he also recognized that it needed a little sprucing up. Over the last six months he has refurbished the interior with new tiling, paint, flooring and awning outside,
which was in a sorry state. The restaurant has always enjoyed traffic and historically has had a good reputation. He wants to build on that. “I’ve been doing it for a long time, it’s what I’m best at,” Bob says, matter-of-factly. Owning several different restaurants and delis over the last 35 years, he was fated to the profession as so many have been: “my mom was a really good cook.” The place oozes family-style New England diner, with emphasis on big breakfasts, stacks of French toast, burgers, home cooking and sandwiches to eat-in or to go. Their hash and eggs has been going down well with locals, who Bob says have been “very welcoming.” Speaking of good neighbors, the restaurant shares the building with Borelli’s Bakery, with whom they’ve been working hand in hand. They certainly don’t have to go far to get their bread, and they’ll need lots of it, with a weekly special at $5.99 for a ten-inch grinder. It wouldn’t be a New-England diner without clamcakes and chowder, and on Fridays they extend their normal hours (6am-4pm) to 7pm instead, in service of fish and chips for dinner. Bob clearly

Breakfast of Champions For the chef at T's, food is about family Anthony Tomaselli’s parents founded T’s Restaurant the year before he was born, in 1982. There’s even a picture in the restaurant of his mom (Tina) holding him while taking care of customers when he was a baby. When he was six, his parents would pick him up from school and return to the restaurant. He would grab a snack and head to the counter to do homework. By the age of 14, he was bussing tables and washing dishes. By 16, he was serving guests and cooking in the kitchen. His first food mentor, aside from his parents, was a 19-year-old named Marco that cooked for T’s. Marco loved food and taught Anthony to respect food. He made him see food in a special way. Tell me more about your journey to becoming the executive chef at T’s Restaurant. When I was attending Providence Country Day (PCD) for high school, I involved myself in an internship program my senior year at Napa Valley Grille in Providence. The chef there was great, very encouraging and inspiring. He shared the creative possibility of food. After PCD, I headed to Johnson & Wales where I stayed for a short time. I was restless and felt the desire to get in and do the job, so I left and was hired by the Papa Razzi Group in Cranston. The chef there was a nice guy who had a natural gift for teaching. I find that restaurants are filled with great people who love to connect, and if you listen, are very willing to share their experiences with you. You must have a passion for breakfast, brunch and lunch. I love breakfast, brunch and lunch and I love T’s. I love the team camaraderie of the kitchens, I love the speed of the day, the traditional and trendy menu development and the goal to always be our best. That challenges me to want to do better and to learn more. T's is about team. We all do this together. No one person is greater than the team. What specials do you look forward to each season? In the spring we like to focus on the goodness of the egg. This year springtime brought the Taste of Verona Eggs Benedict. It has freshly baked focaccia

topped with whipped cream cheese, sliced Roma tomatoes, prosciutto, two poached eggs, Hollandaise and freshly chopped scallions. Summer in New England must include lobster, and T's Bacon Lobster Tomato Panini is a must have. It has smoked bacon, freshly sliced tomato and sautéed lobster sandwiched between two pieces of Texas-style bread, grilled panini-style and finished with an herbed aioli. And of course, chowder. We have white and corn. Autumn at T's wouldn't be autumn without Pumpkin Pancakes: Three pumpkin pancakes finished with pumpkin butter and a dollop of whipped cream. For winter a must-try is the Fireside Omelet. It’s a jumbo omelet stuffed with roasted red pepper, ricotta cheese, juicy Italian sausage, caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms and melted American cheese. I understand you’ve been able to incorporate a lot of gluten-free options into your menu. Gluten-free options for breakfast include all omelets, eggs Benedicts (on Udi's bread), from-scratch oatmeal, and the yogurt and fruit parfait. Pretty much any egg dish can be done with Udi's toast with sides of fresh fruit or baked cinnamon apples instead of home fries. For lunch, salads are abundant and Udi’s bread can be used on any sandwich. Have you ever had a specialty item make it onto the year-round menu? The Rose Window Waffle is a T’s
favorite that started on a special menu. Years back, we were running what we called a Sweet Berry Waffle as a special. Local artist Maxwell Mays ordered it and exclaimed “A Rose Window.” Hence, the Rose Window Waffle. That was 2005 and today, that waffle is still a T’s favorite. What is the quintessential meal at T’s from beginning to end? Our best breakfast would be the Bacon Lovers Eggs Benedict: Three types of bacon, served on three English muffins, topped with three poached eggs and smothered in Hollandaise sauce. Follow this up with T’s Ooey Gooey French Toast. It is glazed cinnamon roll French toast, served with hickory bacon and maple syrup. Of course all this yumminess can be complemented with a mimosa and organic coffee. On the lunch side, what's better than a simmering cup of creamy tomato soup with a grilled cheese sandwich? T’s over the top grilled cheese combines Swiss with brie cheese, diced Gala apples, melt-in-your-mouth sautéed onions and a touch of fig on Texas-style bread grilled golden.

An Ongoing Artful Spirit Janice Causey continues to inspire the world she left behind Narragansett artist Janice Causey never failed to make an impression – and new friends – everywhere she went, with her long, surf-weathered hair, her hand-painted 1966 Dodge Dart (a.k.a. “Cloud 9”), offbeat attire and above all her vibrant, uncontainable spirit. Janice’s life and personality were as colorful as the “art for the heart” that she painted, photographed and created prior to her sudden passing last September at age 68. Though her death may have been untimely, Janice made the fullest possible use of her years on Earth, stirring the spirits of others and inspiring us to seize the day through her own example. Janice’s beloved son, Chris, daughter-in-law, Courtney, and other loved ones are now dedicated to preserving her legacy. Courtney has collaborated with several of Janice’s friends to host an art show at the South Kingstown McGrath Judicial Complex, viewable throughout the summer and titled “Celebrating the Life and Art of Janice Causey.” The idea for the show was hatched during a “paddle out” memorial, a surfer tradition in which hundreds of Janice’s friends participated. A Rhode Island School of Design graduate with a BFA in Illustration, Janice boasted an art teaching resume that spanned schools in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Indiana, Florida and Rhode Island. She simultaneously continued learning and honing her craft, taking courses at RISD, the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College and other workshops in New England. She also taught surf lessons and pursued other eclectic hobbies and avenues of earning a living. “She was a very early riser and loved to fill her days with fun activities,” says Courtney. “Whether it was giving surf lessons, holding an art show, airbrush tattooing or planning her next vacation, she was always busy. Saturday or Sunday mornings with bagels, coffee and an hour-long discussion about her newest idea,” which typically included planning a largerthan-life party with family and friends. “The day before she died, she was late meeting me for a visit with my grandmother,” Courtney continues. “When she showed up, she explained that she was working on her resume. She had two new ideas in mind: becoming a cowgirl and an adjunct professor at RISD. She talked about buying a farm and learning to ride. It’s a perfect example of how young Janice felt, and how excited she was to live life.” Janice’s exuberant approach to living can serve as a template for those who feel bogged down with the daily grind and challenges of modern life. Her ability to turn figurative lead into gold, or literal trash into treasure, reminds us to seek out the hidden beauty and opportunities we often miss in our information-centric, frenetically-paced culture. “Janice saw the world a little differently than most people,” says Courtney.
“There was no black and white for her; her outside-the-box thinking led her to see it as hot pink, purple, orange, blue. An item that most would view as trash – an old faucet from her bathroom sink, for instance – was something she could turn into some kind of art,” Courtney explains. “She kept a plastic cup that I accidentally melted in her oven, and an old wooden horse head that she found in my garage. I found some of her ideas radical and daring, things that I would never do: purple streaks in her hair, wearing nothing but long tshirts in public, purple and orange curtains. Not only did she pull them off, they made her who she was.”

a fictional character came to life one day? Say a king in his own world, ruling his people and doing kingly things (or, if this is Game of Thrones, dying) suddenly found himself here. What would he do? When the king of the fairies, Oberon, and his servant, Puck, are plucked from A Midsummer Night’s Dream they set their sights on the silver screen in Shakespeare in Hollywood, which is being produced by the Granite Theatre starting on June 19. The year is 1934 when Oberon and Puck appear in the strange land of Hollywood. They’re discovered being, well, themselves, by the fictional version of director Max Reinhardt, whose producing A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Warner Bros. and is fretting over the casting. Already having been forced to hire Jack Warner’s mistress, he’s elated to find two “actors” who perfectly encapsulate the characters of Oberon and Puck. Drawn by the allure of the big screen they sign on. While Puck keeps his sights on fame, fortune and adulation, Oberon develops a bond with fellow cast member Olivia and sets to make her his. He orders Puck to produce a magic flower that causes people to fall in love with the first person they see. So of course, his plan goes awry and the flower gets around, creating love triangles and complications on the set. Shakespeare in Hollywood was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and it premiered in 2003. Granite Theatre director David Jepson highlights the play’s time period and author as reasons for their production. “It was written by the premier writer of American farces, Ken Ludwig,” Dave says. “It’s also set in an iconic era of Hollywood in the 1930s when such movies as Gone With The Wind, Wizard of Oz and A Midsummer’s Night Dream were being created. The show is populated by directors (Max Reinhardt) and producers (Jack Warner) and stars Dick Powell, James Cagney and Joe E. Brown of the era. It’s a glorious trip back to Tinseltown.” Reinhardt, who has fled his Nazi-occupied homeland of Austria, is trying

to hold the entire production together, amid a set of circumstances caused by both human nature and magic. Oberon, the king that is used to getting what he wants, wants Olivia. The mischievous Puck is in love with being loved, cigarchomping Hollywood suits want profit, Warner wants his mistress to be satisfied, the mistress wants to be taken seriously and all the while everything about the classic-era Hollywood production is descending into chaos. Of course, you’d expect some grandiosity from a play that combines old school Hollywood with Shakespeare. “The challenges are a dazzling array of scenes (27 of them) moving from movie sets to wardrobe rooms to producers offices,” David says. “We also need the clothing of the ‘30s as well as Shakespearean garb. Our actors also need to convey impressions of stars of yesteryear unfamiliar to some of the younger actors portraying them whose homework includes studying older films.” Comedies always start by eliciting laughter from the audience, and by the end most attempt to invoke empathy towards the characters. That’s the thing, at first, we the audience just want to be entertained. By the end, we know these people and we’re actively rooting for (or against) them. Shakespeare has plenty of humor as well as emotion. “It
would be impossible to say if it’s more comedy than a love story since it is so perfectly both,” David says. “What it’ll end up being is what you want to take from it – most likely both.” Granite Theatre has several other projects of interest to both theater-goers and actors. “The Renaissance City Theatre Inc (RCTI) of the Granite Theatre is in its 15th season,” David says. “We have open auditions and welcome new actors to the auditions as well as our workshops and classes. There are often opportunities in stage management, directing and volunteers for committee work. We have collaborative projects with the Westerly High School and the YMCA where children’s theatre classes and summer theatre camp is offered at Camp Watchaug. We have a very active production season of eight major shows that include a major musical and a musical revue in addition to comedies and mysteries.”
