At the end of the school day, kids come home, do hours of homework, make it through various practices and meetings and clubs, and somehow get up the next day to do it all over again. Celebrate Earth Day by volunteering for a spring cleanup Although you may not need an excuse to celebrate the planet that we live on, every year on April 22, Earth has a celebration. What started in 1970 with 20 million people participating in the United States has expanded to over 192 countries with over one billion people participating, making it the largest civic involvement in the world. Eagle Scout Christopher Clarkin toils to improve his community There are 2.7 million Boy Scouts in America. Only about 7% have earned the Eagle Scout rank (in 2012). Each of them had to complete a service project that benefits the community that averages about 100 hours to complete, in addition to other demanding requisites. Eagle Scout Christopher Clarkin of Charlestown completed four, which likely contributed to him receiving the coveted William T. Hornaday Bronze Medal Award in January. “I was homeschooled up until the eighth grade,” Chris says. He was looking for an outlet in the community. “[When you’re] not getting out as much as others kids, you just look for things.” He started with the organization a little later than many scouts, participating in the Cub Scouts for a year before graduating to the Boy Scout level, but he clearly made up for lost time in Troop 15. Chris, currently completing his freshman year at the University of Rhode Island, will be transferring to the lauded United States Military Academy at West Point this fall. He didn’t make it in on his first attempt, but as with the Hornaday award, the most distinguished conservation award in the Boy Scouts of America, Chris has a thing for going the distance. “I’ve always been one to look to the high point and work for that,” he says humbly. The first of his projects, the one which earned him Eagle Scout status, took place at South Kingstown’s Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge where he helped to clear invasive plants around the wetlands. Next, he worked alongside one of his scoutmasters at the Rhode Island Forest Conservators Organization (RIFCO), a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of the state’s woodland resources, to clear a trail and create what he best describes as an “informational walkabout.” For his next project, he created PVC pipe receptacles at a number of popular fishing areas including Quonochontaug Breachway and Chapman Pond in Westerly. “So people can put fishing line in it,” he says, otherwise, “wildlife can get all

tangled up in the plastic.” Lastly, Chris built birdhouses at Ninigret Park’s Frosty Drew Nature Center in Charlestown as part of Nature Weeks, a hands-on educational program for kids. Though he was honored to receive the Hornaday medal, the first given by the Boy Scouts Narragansett Council since 1994 and only one of 1,100 awarded nationwide since the 1930s, his commitment to environmental conservation has been the real reward. He explains, “The whole point is doing the project – that’s what is the most fulfilling.” April 2014 | SO RHODE ISLAND

A New Kind of TGIF

Some 10th grade girls ask their mom to take them to the mall on the weekend. Cassandra Lin asks her mom to drive her to local restaurants so she can collect used frying oil. It all started in fifth grade when Cassandra and a group of friends were looking to make the world a better place. “We started a community service team, but we didn’t know what we wanted to do,” Cassandra says with a laugh. “We researched and read in a newspaper an article about a local family who couldn’t heat their home. We didn’t know that was happening in our own community. We wanted to find a way to help them.” The Westerly resident attended the 2008 Energy Solutions Expo at University of Rhode Island, which showcased innovative and practical strategies to help both residents and businesses manage rising energy costs. It was there Cassandra learned grease could be turned into clean-burning, sustainable fuel used to, among other purposes, heat homes. “[We needed to] convince people to recycle their cooking oil and turn it into energy,” explains Cassandra. The group of eight pint-sized entrepreneurial minds created Project T.G.I.F. (Turn Grease into Fuel). The recycling program established depots at transfer stations at points throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut where residents can leave their used grease and oil to be collected and turned into fuel. More than 100 restaurants donate cooking oil as well. The result is gallons of renewable fuel to help those in need throughout the community. To give a sense of impact, in 2010, Project T.G.I.F. donated of 21,000 gallons of bioheat for emergency heating assistance — that’s a market value of more than $81,000, which helped heat the homes of 210 families. Today, the group is part of the impressive Westerly Innovations Network, or WIN team, a student community service organization started by Cassandra’s father. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed. Project T.G.I.F. has been recognized by the United Nations, received countless awards from prestigious organizations and has garnered national media attention by Reader’s Digest and The Huffington Post. In 2012, Cassandra was invited to participate in the White House Science Fair where she met President Obama, and at just 13, she gave a talk at TEDxEast entitled, Be Your Own Superman. Named one of the 25 Most Influential Young People in the World by Youth Service America, it’s clear Cassandra and the Project T.G.I.F. team, like Superman, are soaring to new heights. www.projecttgif.com April 2014 | SO RHODE ISLAND

Through the Feinstein Foundation, Narragansett Elementary is learning to help others first Philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein may best be known in Rhode Island for his family-focused television commercials (he coyly banters with his grandchildren, “see you later, alligator;” and they respond gleefully, “in a while, crocodile!”), but as far as many school children are concerned, he’s a bona fide rock star. When he makes his annual visit to Narragansett Elementary, a Feinstein Leadership School, there’s a palpable excitement in the air among students and teachers alike. Principal Gail Dandurand says initiatives like the Feinstein Good Deeds Program inspire students from a young age to think about others both in their community and around the world. “We’re very fortunate, not only in our town, but in our country,” she says. “[The students] may not know that some people don’t have as many clothes or know where their next meal is coming from.” The Feinstein program, she explains, A Jump Rope for Heart event at Narragansett Elementary aims to motivate students to take action by doing small, simple things that will make a difference in the lives of others. Along with Carol Batchelder, an enrichment teacher at the school who volunteers as the Feinstein program coordinator, and the entire faculty, Gail plans activities like Orange and Pink Day, which encouraged students and staff to wear the two colors on Halloween. Twenty-five cents for each participant went into a fund totaling more than $100 which was then matched by the Feinstein Foundation and donated to the American Cancer Society. But it’s not just about big organizations. In November, the student body and staff collected more than 400 pounds of non-perishables which went to a local food bank. In December, fourth graders took to their rainbow looms, fashioning more than 100 bracelets for patients at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, just in time for the Christmas holidays. Fourth graders also raised more than $1,100 for the Narragansett/South Kingstown Animal Shelter and the Animal Rescue League. Other local organizations the students have supported include Welcome House, the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, Scallop Shell Nursing Center, Project Undercover and local veterans groups. “Some [ideas] are generated by students, some by teachers… but it brings home the idea of giving back,” says Gail. Recently, a group of students came together for an “appreciation parade” through the cafeteria to honor the “lunch ladies” who work there every day. “They don’t get thanked a Students show their appreciation for cafeteria staff lot,” admits Gail, and the event showed the employees their work is valued. “It meant a lot to them.”

Volunteerism as a Way of Life
Students at the Rocky Hill School go above and beyond their community service requirements Fahey came to Rocky Hill School in East Greenwich 17 years ago, there was already a community service requirement for students to graduate. An active volunteer herself who had worked with groups including Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Meals on Wheels, she was able to step back and tweak the program to enrich the experience for both students and local organizations alike. “If [students] work with one group or cause, they get a better experience,” explains Maureen. Therefore, 30 of the 40 volunteer hour requirement must be with the same organization. “They make a really good connection.” Oftentimes, that good connection starts with students indulging their interests, which can mean volunteering with a community organization in an unlikely way. One student, she says, volunteers every October at Fortress of Nightmares at Fort Adams in Newport. The haunted house experience benefits the Fort Adams Trust, a non-profit organization that aims to preserve and protect Fort Adams as a public historic site. “He volunteers there every year and says, ‘I get to scare people!’” The experience, Maureen says, should explore what students are passionate about. The connection and personal growth from dedicating their time and talent to others lays the foundation for a future that reaches beyond the students’ own personal wants and needs. When a student returned from college to talk to Maureen about the volunteer experience, Maureen explained it this way. “We have you read good boos in high school hoping you’ll continue A food drive at Rocky Hill raised resources for the RI Community Food Bank to read good books. We have you do good deeds hoping you’ll continue to do good deeds.” For many Rocky Hill students, their service well exceeds the 40-hour minimum. One student was so inspired by her experience during a service trip at an orphanage in Jamaica that she created a fundraiser back home in Rhode Island to benefit the handicapped children there. Her efforts yielded more than 20 wheelchairs for the children. “I tell them I do things that are my passion,” tells Maureen. The avid music fan assists at Charlestown’s Rhythm & Roots and an annual bluegrass festival in upstate New York. She also volunteers with the Rhode Island Bridge Association. “Those are my passions, bridge and music. That’s what I talk to the kids about – so many things don’t happen unless volunteers are there.” Rocky Hill students have volunteered as coaches in youth sports programs, at a horse stable offering therapeutic riding programs, organized a food drive for shelter animals or even played poker with residents at an assisted living center. Adds Maureen, “I Members of Rocky Hill School participate in a school-wide beach cleanup said, ‘it works for me.’ If kids are inspired, I’ll support them.”

If success is in the details, the Santos family is winning with the dream home they designed from the ground up
Growing With the Family When Ed and Paula Santos moved into their Saunderstown home in 1994, it seemed to perfectly suit their needs. Tucked away on a quiet, bucolic expanse, everything seemed idyllic – until it didn’t. “As our family started to grow, we started looking for more space,” explains Ed. By the time they had three small children, the couple began to search for another home that could better accommodate their growing brood. The only problem was, nothing felt right. Ed and Paula took a long hard look at their tight-quarters and pastoral piece of property and decided if they couldn’t find the right home, they would create it. The couple turned to David Andreozzi, principal of Andreozzi Architects, to design a solution for their home that offered comfortable living

and space to entertain. Before David even drew a line of architectural plans, the trio talked about the home’s obstacles and its objectives. “From Ed and Paula’s perspective, it seems that when they bought the house, it was working for them just fine. But, as their family grew and their needs changed – and they couldn’t find a home in they loved the way they loved this property – the answer seemed to be to renovate and [add an] addition,” reiterates David. “What David does well is he talks to you about how you plan to use every room in the house. Then he lays it out so that it’s practical. We use every feature,” explains Ed. The couple soon learned to think bigger – not only in terms of space, but lifestyle. A bedroom for themselves and each of the children, a spacious kitchen, a living room with good flow –
those were all obvious decisions. But options including a theater, finished basement with a fitness center, ample garage space, strategically aligned views of the patio and pool area – these were all thoughtfully considered. “We revisited the whole plan,” says Paula. “As their family changed it was important to assess their children’s needs to recreate the existing house in order to create a newborn sense of place that both their family and friends would be drawn to,” says David. “From the media room, to the family room, to the pool and outside entertainment areas, it was about creating an almost magnetic place that would be comforting and secure for all.” Making it all happen took patience and an ample budget on Ed and Paula’s behalf. It also took, ironically, a temporary change of address. “About 90% of
the house was gutted. We moved to an apartment for a year and a half while they were doing the demo and building,” recalls Ed. Together, the couple and the architect, along with David’s associate, Dave Rizzolo (who the Santos’ say essentially morphed into a member of the family), and the building team at North Kingstown-based Gardner Woodwrights, found solutions to challenges and visions reality. “From a design standpoint, one of the unique design quandaries was to design a home office for Ed where he could entertain clients, yet he also wanted direct access from that same office to the master bedroom suite,” David cites as an example. “Our solution was a connecting second floor walkway which made all the connections in an intuitively private way. Also, another challenge was the bones of the original home; a developer colonial

box. We went though many variants of detailing to soften the design to a more costumed designed colonial farmhouse.” One of the spaces Paula enjoys the most is the formal living room, a space they also call “the music room.” Though formal living rooms are sometimes excluded in today’s home designs to make room for larger kitchens or “great rooms,” the music room is Paula’s personal sanctuary. “I play the piano, so I go there when I want to be away from everything. It’s my relaxing space. The kitchen is very beautiful and functional but it can be hectic sometimes,” she says with a laugh. With their children
being 20, 17, 14, there’s always a meal in the making or something to be done. Though Ed’s office, tucked away on the second floor and opposite the bedrooms, is a dream come true, the home theater, he says, was the space he had the most apprehension about. To his delight, it has reaped the most reward. “Merging technology into today’s construction is key to its success,” David explains. “We have worked with Jeff Mitchell at RS Audio Visual Design for over a decade achieving this at all levels. When the discussion occurred of creating a place to draw children and friends, the concept of recreating a
theater seemed like a natural solution.” Ed and Paula turned to Kelly Hickey of Hickey Interiors to execute a design scheme for their aesthetic which they describe as “eclectic traditional.” Kelly, says David, worked hand with the Santos’ to achieve a seamless composition of interior decoration with the interior architecture. Reflecting on the project, David says the Santos home is a good example of how an architect can truly help assess your needs with regards to the scale of a project, the program of a project and most importantly, your financial resources. “There is a misconception that
an architect will overdesign and cost you money. In truth, it is opposite. They allow you to spend money on what you need now, plan for the future and keep you on budget. As we interviewed Paula and Ed, we proposed options and opportunities for their growing family. They happily chose many of our suggestions. The result is a perfect design solution designed exactly for them – then, now and in the future.”

When I was younger,
I treated facials a little bit like I treated dessert: they were nice and sweet, but I didn’t really need them, and frankly, they were a little expensive. I enjoyed the pampering when I got one – because it always feels good to spend an hour in a spa - but my youthful skin didn’t change much afterwards. Now that I’m in my early 30s, I’m starting to need facials as a way to clean out my clogged pores, hydrate my drier skin, smooth out the tiny lines I’m starting to see when I look too closely in the mirror. Over the past year, I’ve been getting them regularly, and I’ve seen a drastic improvement in all the ways that time has started marching across my face. Perfectly Coiffed Jeremy White on getting and keeping great hair Jeremy White co-owns Sense of Style Salon in Wakefield. Her passion for hair styling was sparked as a young girl, who always loved everything about hair and beauty. Growing up in Cailfornia, she remembers going to salons with her mother where she would watch the ladies walk out of the salons looking beautiful and transformed. What stood out most? The smile on their faces. It was then she knew that she wanted to make a difference in how people feel about themselves, and that is exactly what she is doing today. What made you decide to get into the hair salon business? As a young girl I would love cutting and styling my dolls hair, so as I got older I knew it was a passion of mine. My motivation to open a hair salon came from knowing I could make a person’s experience something they would remember, a place where they felt at home and yet know they are going to walk out of this salon feeling better than when they came in. What’s your background? I have taken several educational classes in cutting and coloring as well as formal hair design. Starting out in Cranston, I was fortunate enough to work with some great stylists who took me under their wings and taught me many things. As well as being the proprietor I also have been styling hair for 14 years. In addition to a cosmetology license I also hold certificates in cutting/coloring with Aquage, Tigi, Paul Mitchell and Joico. Where do you draw inspiration when cutting hair? I draw my inspiration from many things: media, magazines as well as the person sitting in my chair. One of the most important things I’ve learned along the way is to ask the person a lot of questions. For example, how much time would you spend on your hair? What do you do for a living and are they willing to spend more time if they are contemplating a new hair style? All these things help in giving a person a realistic change.

How much does product matter when maintaining a new hairstyle? The products we sell do help with keeping hair healthier as well as a longer lasting style. Many times a client will return to the salon saying that when they left their hair felt and looked so good, but when styling at home it just didn’t look the same. What is in the future for Sense of Style Salon? I see more growth for Sense of Style. We are a salon that will always strive to make our clients feel as special

All About the Dough A new pizzeria where quality ingredients shine lights up pizza in East Greenwich, and I have a history. I’ve written about woodfired pizza places in sister magazines Providence Monthly and The Bay, and now we come to a new Rhode Island contender on Post Road in East Greenwich, Cobblestones Wood Fired Pizza. If you’ve read my other pizza reviews – and that’s what they are more than anything else, reviews of the pizza – you’ll find I’m pretty picky when it comes to artisanal pizza pie. Sure there are dozens, if not hundreds of pizza places in Rhode Island, and I’m never one to turn away a slice from almost anywhere. But when it comes to the real deal: the fermented dough, the wood, the 800 to 1,000 degree temperatures, the char, the ingredients and so on, I’ve got very high standards. To repeat what I’ve said before in those other pages, “I love pizza. I really love pizza. I’ve flown to Phoenix, Arizona for less than 24 hours just to have pizza. I’ve eaten pizza in Italy and at restaurants in the United States that are considered to have some of the best pizza in the country. I’ve also had the great fortune to make pizzas in a wood-fired oven with one of the best bakers in the world.” So that brings us to Cobblestones, a place I’d been wanting to try as soon as they opened up. I had heard about
the Di Fiore oven they had imported from Italy and installed in this storefront across the street from Benny’s. Then I read how the owner was the former owner of Olerio’s, an Italian restaurant I’d been to many times as a kid growing up in Cranston. The background and commitment was clearly there, so how about the pizza? First of all, I should mention that Cobblestones looks great. The exterior and the interior looks completely new with lots of wood and a fun design that kind of brings to mind being in an outdoor setting in Italy, even in late winter when I visited. When you walk in you can immediately see the wood burning oven in the kitchen behind the bar, that is if your eyes aren’t drawn to the great light fixtures hanging over the stone-faced bar. They’re made from inverted, galvanized olive buckets and I couldn’t help glancing up at that often to figure out how to duplicate it for my own use. But honestly, you can’t help but be captivated by the huge wood-burning oven. Humans may all be drawn to fire by nature, and if you really want to watch the pizza making in action you need to take a seat at the bar. My family grabbed a table and wow did Cobblestones fill up quickly on the night we were there. It’s not a very big place, but

it felt very comfortable and it seemed like the East Greenwich neighborhood had already embraced the restaurant. The first very pleasant surprise when we sat down: Yacht Club soda! I find that Rhode Island’s own almost
100-year-old soda company isn’t served in nearly as many restaurants as it should be and it was great to hear. No Coke or Pepsi at Cobblestones. In fact, Cobblestones uses a bunch of local producers such as Narragansett Creamery, Daniele and more. It makes sense that of the dozens of cuisines served in Rhode Island, great Italian food ingredients are available locally and it’s nice to see a place taking advantage of that. The next thing that I loved seeing was a card on the table that essentially laid out the rules for the pizza you were about to eat. It listed what kind of wood, the temperatures of the deck and dome, the flour and tomatoes used and why your pie might be charred (it should be!). It was a great little primer on the style of pizza that Cobblestones made and nicely set the tone with good answers to common questions. Onto the food, specifically the pizza, which doesn’t need to be specified because Cobblestones’ menu only consists of pizzas. There is a salad that comes with slices of essentially an oiled pizza crust with no toppings, and

an Antipasto, but we skipped those and went straight for four pies: Margherita, Pepperoni, Bianco and Soppressata. In a word: wonderful. Visually all four pizzas looked different and yet clearly were made with the same care in preparation and handling. The dough was well structured, chewy but with good crispness, and the toppings were all very tasty. My favorite, if I was made to pick one, was the Margherita ($13), which is pretty much a benchmark pizza, so high marks to Cobblestones for getting it so good. Yes, the center of the pie was heavy from a pool of tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and good olive oil, but the dough was cooked all the way through and the toppings didn’t overwhelm the taste. It was an excellent Margherita. The Pepperoni ($11)
pizza was very typical and very fulfilling. The Bianco ($14.50) was also a highlight, showing how good toppings can be. The Soppresata ($14.95) was meaty and a touch on the sweet side with the caramelized onions. Cobblestones is a great addition to Rhode Island’s too few, proper, woodfired pizzerias. It’s nice to see it in East Greenwich too. I would gladly go back for that Margherita again and again.

All aboard! The new Tony C’s Bar & Grill at Wickford Junction has 13 new exciting railway-inspired cocktails ready to tempt you. The former Junction Bistro reopened in February with a new name, a new menu and a new energy. Owner, John Cioe named the restaurant after his brother Anthony, who died too young. He says, “Tony C’s is about cherishing the good times while they last.” With live music, cocktails and a tasty new menu, Tony C’s is a great spot to enjoy life. Since Tony C’s is located adjacent to the Wickford Junction Commuter Rail Station, General Manager Mark Chase named each of the 13 signature cocktails after a stop on the rail route. The cocktails go from Wickford Junction (a gin martini) to South Station (the house version of a Moscow Mule) and hit all of the stops in between. The Hyde Park sounds positively sinful with Oreo infused vanilla vodka, Godiva chocolate liqueur, Tres Leches liqueur, marshmallow and a Double Stuf Oreo. There is even a gluten-free martini available called The Sharontini (see the recipe listed below). The food menu is equally as inventive. Take the standard hamburger for example. Tony C’s Cuban Burger is a 1/2 pound hamburger served on a house-made ciabatta, pretzel or bulky roll and pressed with ham, swiss cheese, sliced pickle and topped with a secret Cuban sauce. The new incarnation of the restaurant features a restored saloon, a whiskey bar and a revamped dining room. The bar features a 24-tap draught beer system, and the restaurant focuses on “American Fare with Rhode Island Flair” (like local oysters and prime rib). The menu includes a “build it yourself” option giving the onus of creating the meal to you. The winning dish will be chosen by restaurant owners Garret Roberts (a North Kingstown native) and John Keane (from Nantucket) and will be named after the nominator and featured on the restaurant’s inaugural menu.

Dan Murillo, executive chef for Newport-based Plantation Catering, is no stranger to producing a high volume of edible creations using fresh ingredients. Now, Dan is bringing his love of art and quality cuisine to the recently opened Plantation at the Bay, a Jamestown restaurant featuring many seasonal, farm to table treats.

How often does the menu change? Our menus change with the season so that we can give our guests a feeling of New England foods year round. I take these ingredients and add a flair of creativity to them so that our food will never get boring. The true test of a chef is that he or she can develop a menu that stays consistently great while implementing new ideas and combinations. How long have you been with Plantation Catering/Plantation at the Bay? I have been with Plantation Catering for five great years. I have learned a few key parts to being successful as a chef: always stay calm, cool and collected. Planning and organization is key to expressing my artistic talent and creativity through my food. Growing up I was a skilled artist and now my painters pallet is culinary ingredients. How does catering-style cooking differ from creating meals in a regular kitchen? With catering you have the ability to personalize the food for your clients; it’s all about them. We give our clients the feel that we are their personal chefs for their occasion. Whereas in a restaurant, there is a set menu and the ability to give guests that feeling can be challenging. At Plantation at the

Does severe weather affect your choice of ingredients? It can during the winter months when local farmers are not producing large quantities of product that we need. This can drive prices higher and in return makes it more challenging to create a menu that will stay cost effective. Raising prices is not always the answer. Plantations seek to deliver a quality product at the best price we can.
What makes “Chef Dan’s Bolognaise” different from a traditional Bolognese? Chef Dan’s Bolognaise has been the same recipe I have made for years; I’ve never changed it. I have gotten great feedback from that dish for a long time so why change a recipe that’s great? It’s a perfect dish for the winter months - which means if you read between the lines it won’t be on our next menu, so hurry down to Plantation at the Bay and give it a try!
Where do you find your inspiration when it comes to crafting a dish? My inspiration stems from the wide range of products that I am able to work with. When I am approached with an ingredient I automatically start thinking of combinations of flavors and ways to highlight them. To me, anything can be the center of

David Howard’s talents as a costume designer extend beyond plays at URI and The Gamm to his personal collection
“At URI, when I’m designing a show, everything has to be somewhat transparent – the costume shop manager and I are working with the students to help them not just create my vision of the play, but to help them gather skill so that they can become better at what they do,” he says. It’s clear from talking to David that he enjoys building connections. When he speaks of his love of costume design, specifically, and the theater in general, he’s quick to mention his respect for and interest in history, in the collaboration that happens between the facts and the fiction in context on stage. In the beginning stages of teaching at URI, he says what really showed him that teaching would be a good fit for him was teaching Costume and Fashion History and seeing the light bulbs go on for his students in the room: “every teacher enjoys that moment when you make a nearly synaptic connection in their mind,” he says. The big production at the University this spring is Chicago, which will be the second production designed by David this year. Now this is a production with history. “You get excited, but you know people are going to compare you to things that you won’t necessarily be able to live up to. So it’s going to be challenging and frustrating,” he says. But the resuscitation of stories – particularly well-loved stories – is an inevitable facet of creating work for the stage. And with this production, David and his students are in the process of
navigating how to present the play in a different enough light as to be “hopefully inspiring and interesting and exciting.” It’s still early in the process, but so far, for David and his classes, it’s involved looking at period costumes (around the 1920s), which present their own unique challenges. “The 1920s don’t lend themselves well to Bob Fosse choreography,” David says, chuckling, “which is all about the body. In the ‘20s, there was a rejection of the natural body in a lot of ways.” After David finishes with the design process, he’ll then work with the costume shop manager, who also works with students to create patterns and the final costumes. Once in production, a student wardrobe supervisor will manage the entirety of the show, managing quick changes and organization, joined by students managing wigs and makeup. Just a brief survey of the hands it takes to bring a production like this to fruition makes it quite clear that David was right: there are indeed as many roles as there are those who have talents beyond the spotlight.

Howard was a student just starting to carve his path in the theater world, he thought he knew what that path would look like. An avid performer, David always thought he’d be an actor, and spent his time preparing to strut the boards. It was in college where David started to realize that he wasn’t a master performer; luckily, he didn’t let this deter him from the theater in general. He stuck with it, although on a slightly different, more meandering path. “I always say that I have a degree in the world of theater,” he jokes. It’s quite fitting that David should spend much of his time now showing aspiring theater artists another side of the love of performance that likely drives them to explore imagined worlds and long tech rehearsals alike. As an Associate Professor of Costume Design at the University of Rhode Island, David says that much of his job is to help students “mine the things that are in them” so that they can “hopefully recognize the things that they are good at.” “Somebody may come into school with one objective,” he says, “like wanting to be an actor. But slowly, I can hopefully show them that, in addition to acting, they might have other skills, and show them how to bring those skills together to create a career in the theater versus just the dream of working in the theater.” David knows both of these things intimately. In addition to his academic life at URI, where he teaches in the design track of the University’s BFA program, he is a resident designer at the Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre in Pawtucket, where he’s been designing costumes since the group’s first production. He says that his teaching life has enriched his (other) working life and vice versa; it’s no doubt enriched the lives of his students, too, who get an intimate audience with a working designer. But that doesn’t mean he approaches both tasks on the same wavelength, he says, noting that the students and their experience are his first priority when it comes to teaching, whereas his design duties at the Gamm are more about bringing about his own vision.

For Guy Cassaday,
it’s been a long and winding road to a career as a working artist – one that began as a young boy who loved cars and trucks and started sketching them at an early age. “I always liked forms and shapes,” he says. “I was taken with the sculpted styling of cars, and how things worked, as well.” Over the years, Guy has done just about everything a car-loving kid might have dreamed about, from owning his dream ride (a “Big Bad Green” 1969 AMX muscle car) to restoring a rare 1966 Chrysler Imperial Crown Convertible and designing vehicles which previously existed only in his imagination. A 1980 graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, Guy wanted to work as an automotive designer but found that career path blocked by a slumping car industry wrenched by competition with Japanese automakers. Instead, he took a job with the toymaker Tonka, where he ended up designing new versions of the toys he grew up with, including the iconic Mighty Dump Truck. After Tonka was purchased by Hasbro in 1991, Guy created a series of outlandish combat vehicles for GI Joe action figures (with names like the “Conquest” and “Persuader”), from initial sketches to building working models. On the side, he was
able to fulfill his life-long dream of designing a working vehicle – a fiberglass tour bus produced by a Warren boat company that was used by singer Tom Jones and other performers. Guy worked at a variety of jobs after leaving Hasbro in 1997, including a freelance designer, a stint at a local company making elaborate toys for blowing bubbles, and, finally, several years spent selling Porsches at Inskip in Warwick. Those all turned out to be detours along the journey back to his childhood passion: drawing cars. In 2012, Guy rolled out his newest venture, producing commissioned drawings and paintings of cars, trucks, motorcycles and boats for companies, collectors and others with a passion for chrome and horsepower. Projects have ranged from the relatively mundane (a Lin’s Propane truck) to the exotic (a colored sketch of a vintage 1935 Rosengart cabriolet that rode out World War II under a French haystack and is now owned by North Providence resident Ray Frechette). Hand drawn in marker, chalk and gouache, Guy’s works vary in price from about $375 to $1,400, depending on size and detail. A surprising number are commissioned by women like Ray’s wife, Nancy, who ordered one as a surprise birthday gift for her husband.
“Each project brings a challenge,” says Guy. “Each object has its own personality, and each represents a study of light and reflection and color.” One of his most recent projects, a gouache painting of a vintage car headlight, even ventures into the realm of the abstract. Guy is exhibiting his work at North Kingstown’s new Studio 460 and has created a series of sketches for an upcoming exhibit of antique pedal cars at the Attleboro Art Museum, scheduled for April 9 to May 10. The latter “are a cross between toys and automotive design, and they’ve been a blast to do,” he says. Shifting gears from thinking of himself as an artist rather than a designer has been an adjustment for Guy. “As opposed to industrial design, the manufacturing of a product, now it’s focusing on my fine-art abilities,” he says. “My wife is like, ‘wow – you’re saying it now’ – I’m an artist.”
