Ah, February vacation. Remember back in the day, when you would trudge back to school on January 2, totally despondent over the agonizing six week stretch you’d have to endure before your next week off? We had it made in those days. I’m lucky now if I can manage one whole week off in a year, rather than tacking one extra vacation day onto an existing threeday weekend here and there. But to your kids, February vacation is one sweet week in the middle of a frozen sea of schoolwork. And it’s up to you, parents, to make the most of it. A Pro Runner Uses Her Pen to Keep You Motivated

Volunteers Gather in Wakefield to Help Local Fish

It’s only February, which means – be honest – you’ve probably already slacked off on your New Year’s resolution to get fit and exercise more. You’re not alone. It can be hard to stay motivated, focused, and even organized when it comes to your fitness goals. Rhode Island resident and elite pro runner Roisin “Ro” McGettiganDumas understands your struggle. That’s why she, along with co-author and fellow pro runner Lauren “Lo” Fleshman, created the Believe Training Journal, a combination training log, goal setting journal and a howto manual designed to keep runners confident and inspired all year long. It’s a revamp of their previous Believe I Am Training Journal, which they created when they couldn’t find a similar workout log that hooked them enough to keep using it. The new journal is brimming over with Ro and Lo’s personalized touches: everything from their expert advice and hardwon pro circuit wisdom right down to hand-drawn illustrations and hand-

Each spring, volunteers organize along Wakefield’s Saugatucket River, to help move anadromous alewives and blueback herring, known locally as buckies, over and past two Colonial-era dams to spawn in upper waters. Buckies are 12” long swimming machines that have been harvested for food and bait for hundreds of years. Now the focus is on the survival of these critical forage fishes, whose fantastic annual migration feeds ospreys and eagles, bluefish and striped bass, even otters and raccoons. Perched on slippery boulders at the toe of the Post Road dam, dipping nets on long fiberglass poles, locals swing them by the dozens from small open pools of cold rushing water over the granite block wall. There is a fish ladder here but it is too steep and the water too fast for the great majority of tired buckies arriving on high tides. Dark waves of herring hauled over the dam will be stopped again at the Palisades Mill basin where that fish ladder is also too strong and fast. But here, a dozen men in waders will

Last fall, major reconstructions were begun at both fish ladders, making them easier to navigate, adding switchbacks to reduce flows, even creating a resting pool to help buckies rebuild their energy before entering the ladder. Special angled tubing will also aid the passage of American eels when they move up-river at night. This spring, when construction is complete, alewives, blueback’s, shad and eels will all have a far greater chance of migrating to the waters of their birth and will hopefully put dozens of dedicated volunteers out of work. –Todd Corayer

History Repeated Two South County companies are continuing Westerly’s textile manufacturing heritage By Andrea E. McHugh

As StyleWeek Northeast unfolds in the Capital City this month, the event has more significance than those under the bright lights may realize. Fashion and the Ocean State have been inseparable for centuries. In fact, Rhode Island is the birthplace of textile manufacturing, the foundation of the garment industry. The first textile mill in the country was founded in 1790 in Pawtucket by Samuel Slater and by the mid-19th century, thriving textile factories were operating from Westerly to Woonsocket and beyond. Here in South County, landmarks including the now-dilapidated Potter Hill Mill on the banks of the Pawcatuck River in Westerly were home to booming textile businesses. It has even been said that the first pound of cotton cloth was produced here. Companies that occupied the Potter Hill Mill included Joseph Potter & Sons Co., a cotton spinning and dressing mill in the Potter family from 1810 to 1843; E & H Babcock Company, a woolen mill in the Babcock family from 1843 to 1885; and J.P. Campbell & Company, which produced cashmere yarn and cloth until 1889. The mill compound was so expansive that by mid-century it had boarding

houses to accommodate the hundreds of employees, many of whom came from far off places for the steady work. The Pawcatuck Woolen Mill Company brought the mill into the 20th century, manufacturing wool yarn and cloth for men’s clothing at the site until 1930. The Swift River Woolen Company operated there until 1955 followed by the Westerly Woolen Company, which only operated for three years. By then, a substantial number of local and regional manufacturing companies either moved south or closed permanently. Today, a handful of textile manufacturers and related companies are continuing South County’s fabric production legacy. Like Potter Hill Mill, Griswold Textile Print, Inc. is perched on the Pawcatuck River, which used to be the primary power source for the spinning mechanisms. Located in the White Rock section of Westerly, local retired reporter and historian Gloria Russell says Griswold used to be home to the White Rock Mill. “That mill was very prosperous,” tells Gloria. “There was a wonderful village and the people that owned the mill took care of the workers that worked there. I have seen pictures of

early White Rock; they had a school and everything.” Gloria says like many mills, the owners “sold out and left” quite suddenly, leaving the workers, machinery and lifeblood of the village behind. However, since 1943, the mill has thrived. Griswold is one of the few fully operational, hand-printed fabric mills in the country. The company was founded in 1937 by the Blair family, says manager Jack Wilson. Today, the team there stocks, prepares, prints and finishes high-end decorative fabrics for the interior design home furnishings market. “Designers come up with concepts and the graphics, then between us and the screen-makers, we closely cooperate,”

to produce the coveted, superbly crafted fabrics, explains Jack. How high end and historically significant are Griswold’s fabrics? A popular fabric brand Griswold Textile Print produces for is Brunschwig & Fils, which dates back to 1891 and can be found at such high profile addresses at White House and the Palace of Versailles. Brunschwig & Fils became part of Kravet Fabrics in 2011, an industry leader in the trade home furnishings industry that turns to Griswold to produce its exceptional, high-style designs. The company also prints for Clarence House fabrics and wall coverings that can be found in some of the most distinguished museums and historic houses around the globe. A newer client for Griswold is Duralee, the upscale fabric brand which breathed new life into the prestigious Bailey & Griffin line. The exquisite designs had been archived by a company Duralee acquired in 2012. The first collection of printed and woven fabrics under the Bailey & Griffin name in more than 80 years is being hand-screened on the highest quality fibers by Griswold. It’s a reunion for the two names as Bailey & Griffin had used the Griswold mill to

churn out its classic sought-after designs for decades. “We do a lot of work for small, boutique, artisan-style companies,” says Jack, which has helped propel the company forward and continue to employ Rhode Island and southeastern Connecticut residents. The company has seen its fair share of trying times, including during the most recent recession and as competition with the foreign textile industry increases, but Griswold has prevailed. “I see the leveling of the playing field again,” says Jack. “We’ve always competed with groups in Europe – with the Asian companies and other emerging markets – but I do see hope in the future.” Darlington Fabrics is also based in Westerly. You might not know the name, but you have likely seen the product. According to Alexandra Moore, executive vice president of The Moore Company (Darlington’s parent company), Darlington Fabrics are used by all the major names in the athletic market including the NHL, MLB, NFL and NCAA. The global leader in enduse market sales of Raschel (weft knits often used in women’s apparel), tricot (a plain warp-knitted fabric like nylon, wool, rayon, silk or cotton often used in undergarments) and satin warp-knit elastic fabrics, Darlington’s innovative high-quality stretch fabrics equally dominate textiles throughout the medical field and intimate apparel market. The Moore Company, a privately

owned family business, was founded in 1909, says Alexandra. “Darlington Fabrics was acquired in 1973 and relocated to Westerly from New Jersey,” she explains. Today there are two locations here: Beach Street, where the warping and knitting is done, and Canal Street for dyeing and finishing. According to Gloria Russell, the Beach Street location was once home to Moore’s Mill. “They manufactured elastics and garters, they called it elastic web,” she adds. But what sets Darlington apart is the company’s revolutionary product development. The company manufactures compression fabrics for high performance athletic wear that helps athletes perform at their peak, fabricates odor resistant finishes that act as a built in deodorant, creates unbroken loop hook receptive stretch fabrics for medical and industrial applications, and has also pioneered soil release and moisture management fabrics. In short, the company collaborates with clients to develop technologies that are specific to their requirements, employing approximately 162 full time workers. There are a few other textile manufacturers in and around South County, while other mill compounds are beginning new chapters like the William Clark Thread Mill in Pawcatuck area of Stonington, Conn., which is slated for a $26.3 million respiration project that will feature apartments and retail space.

Doug and Sherri Tracey’s love for the Ocean State is exemplified all throughout their East Greenwich home

A passion for Pinterest and DIY design brings a dated home into the 21st century When Doug and Sherri Tracey first walked into the four bedroom, two and a half bath Colonial in East Greenwich seven years ago, their initial shared thought was that the abode was trapped in the 1980s. But with a little imagination, a lot of sweat equity and a can-do spirit, they knew it would be very well suited for their growing family. “I pulled wallpaper for a year,” says Sherri, laughing. “The floors were all bad carpet… it was a mess. Not one thing was done to it since it was built in 1984. I think I blocked it out of my mind.” Though she had originally been focused on living in Barrington after uprooting from their West Coast digs, Doug suggested they might be better suited to enjoy East

Greenwich. A good school system, a charming downtown with shops and restaurants and a quick drive from area beaches were all factors Doug knew would appeal to Sherri. “But I had my heels dug in the ground on Barrington,” Sherri admits. The couple, both Massachusetts natives, had two offers fall through on houses in Barrington, so she decided to pursue Doug’s East Greenwich suggestion. The couple looked at more than seven homes in a single day when they found the Pratt-built diamond in the rough. “We picked this one because we had a builder with us who said this was a good, well-built house,” explains Sherri. The Traceys got started on renovations right away, doing much of

the work themselves. Together they knocked down walls, moved rooms and planned the renovation of the kitchen and both bathrooms. The laundry room moved upstairs, proving much more convenient as all of the bedrooms are on the second floor, and the sunroom later became a casual space for the children, Jillian and Finn, to play. Radical changes extended to the exterior as well. “When we first moved in, we pulled up the whole yard, all the old bushes and more,” Sherri says. Later they would commission the complete renovation of the patio and deck area in the back complete with a fire pit. The area was designed by Tara Mernick and Pamela Unwin-Barkley of Re:design RI, also of East Greenwich.

Avid entertainers, the couple modified various details throughout the first floor to create a welcoming, comfortable space. “I love having parties,” Sherri says. “We had a door between the formal dining room and kitchen and we closed in the door which people are surprised we did, but it made a nice area to accommodate a beautiful farm table.” A supporter of local businesses, the couple adores the table by The Lorimer Workshop they have. The company is located inside The Cove Center (formerly known as the Dyerville Mill) in Providence. The artisans there primarily use salvaged and reclaimed wood to craft their furniture pieces which have been featured in The New York Times Magazine and on lauded websites Design Sponge and February 2015 | SO RHODE ISLAND 43

Apartment Therapy. The table, which lends the kitchen a natural, earthy overtone, blends seamlessly with the coastal-inspired décor. It is also symbolic of the couple’s love of the Ocean State, which is equally reflected in the various Rhode Island imagery found in and around the kitchen. “My kitchen is covered with Rhode Island pictures,” declares Sherri proudly. “Everything in there has a Rhode Island feel.” One of the pieces is from MapArtForChange on Etsy.com which features artful map designs with a portion of the proceeds going to charity. The room is one of her favorites in the whole house as it seems everything centers around the island – family time, friend-filled

gatherings, drinking and dining. In lieu of undergoing major redecorating projects, Sherri enjoys reinventing rooms throughout their home with paint. “It’s just a normal ‘whatever’ house that I paint 5,000 times a year,” she jokes. “I just painted five rooms in the last few weeks.” She gravitates toward neutral, earthy tones and lets bold décor accents make a splash. “I like things simple and clean; modern and ‘beachy,” explains Sherri. One could say her color and design philosophy is an extension of the family’s passions. “Once it gets nice out, we’re not indoors at all. We’re at the beach or [enjoying the] outdoors,” says Sherri, adding

that nearby Bonnet Shores in Narragansett is a family favorite. Her daughter Jillian chose a mint green for her room and son Finn’s walls are a soothing gray. Sherri’s passion for the perfect hue is exemplified inside and out. “My house is the same color as East Greenwich Town Hall,” she laughs. “I went out and hunted the color down.” The shade is Birdseye Maple, a warm yellow tone, by Sherwin Williams. Though Sherri is passionate about color and is inspired by vignettes on Pinterest, she collaborated with interior design and color consultant Kerry O’Hara of Color Perspectives for the home. Like most homeowners, the Traceys

always have their eye on another project. They are contemplating installing hardwood floors in some spaces and making the toy room/sun room a more functional space for the whole family, but one day at a time. Right now, there is no other place the Traceys would rather be. “Tons of families with young kids have moved in [the neighborhood] and we have great neighbors,” says Sherri. “We love the location and being near the water. This is perfect place for us.”

A spa day of beauty from head to tippy toe in Jamestown Tucked away into the quiet seaside town just steps from the water, in a historic house on the main street, is the cozy beauty haven of Cathryn Jamieson Salon. The building is home to a handful of great services, therapists, counselors and even an organic general store where you can discover delicious local meals, ready to go. But that isn’t even the half of it. Cathryn Jamieson has anything else your heart could desire. I visited on a pleasantly sunny day in this dismal winter slump, to find the Newport Bridge and a whole cast and crew of stylists and therapists ready to greet me and serve up a proper day of beauty. The entire lower level of the historic home belongs to Cathryn Jamieson, an Aveda concept salon. They have a comfortable former bedroom for facial treatments, a smaller nail and reflexology area, as well as a full salon. Upon entering the quiet respite, I was greeted with some intoxicating Aveda tea that immediately set my taste buds and my mind at ease. My first treatments of the day were a delightful combination of an essential facial and reflexology. My first order was to get into a cozy robe and dip my feet into a warm lavender foot bath that was filled with tiger’s eye and rose quartz stones to assist in relaxing my feet for the reflexology. Reflexology is a treatment that uses stimulation of the pressure points, in this case in the feet, to stimulate self healing and help the body achieve inner balance. My reflexologist Karen took care of my tootsies while my cosmetologist/esthetician Ellen took care of my skin. I was treated to an Essential Facial service that cleansed, exfoliated, steamed and moisturized my skin into perfection. Ellen also offered a complimentary eyebrow threading, which I’ve never had before, but within a minute, I had tidy brows as well. At the end of my reflexology

treatment, Karen gave me a rundown of what she found. Certain parts of the body when they are inflamed, or a bit over-stressed, leave crystal deposits behind in the pressure points due to the excess of lactic acid, so she could tell more about what was going on with me than I could. Not only did my feet feel relaxed, the rest of my body followed suit. After my inner healing and facial treatments, I headed over to Kristin in the salon to receive a shampoo and style. We decided to try something different with my rather blah style, and after 30 minutes of pleasant chatter and more delicious tea, I was rocking a new look. My hair finally had some body instead of my otherwise fine head of hair, a miracle from the beauty gods. For my last stop on the day of beauty train, I pulled back into the cozy back bedroom area for a trip to the makeup chair. Ellen was again in charge of making my face look it’s best and we chatted about all the different makeup products she was using and the pros and cons of each,

from one makeup junkie to another. Since I was headed back to the office this particular afternoon we went for a more subtle but polished look, which was achieved in large part with thanks to the airbrush foundation. My co-workers called me “dewy” and I sure was feeling refreshed and fabulous, so I couldn’t agree more. All in all my day in Jamestown was a small slice of heaven. Every single stylist at Cathryn Jamieson, including Cathryn herself treated me like a long-lost friend. Not only did I have a day of beauty, I had a blast doing it! Christine Woodbine, owner of Crosswynds Traders, understands the plight of the fashionista. We caught up with her to see how her mix of designer trends and low prices has become a fashion destination. How did you get started in the fashion retail business? I’ve been in business for 23 years and the store itself has been open for 21 years. I started by setting up booths in the student unions at URI, Brown, PC and RIC. After a few years of traveling around to the various schools to sell my clothing, I decided to open up a store to see if I could get the students to come to me instead. And I’m grateful that for 21 years they have. You’ve certainly seen styles come and go. What’s one trend we should know about this season? This spring we’re going to see clothing and jewelry combine textures, prints and patterns. For example, a necklace that mixes gold-plated metal with brightly colored stones has a thick nautical rope woven throughout it. I’m seeing shirts that combine stripes on one side and gingham print on the shoulders.

You have a great selection of comfortable, cozy clothes. Any tips on how to wear loungewear without looking sloppy? The secret is to not wear it oversized. One of my favorite collections is by Alternative Apparel, and the key with this brand for both men and women is the fit.

Which are the favorites? I’ve been fortunate to carry a number of different well-liked designers. Retail trends can be so fickle, yet you’ve survived two decades. What’s your secret? While we’ve added newer boutique labels for those who want a higher-end product, we’ve always kept our discounted staples of jeans, sweatshirts and tees. I pride myself in the fact that my jeans have stayed the same price – $16! – since the day I opened. I still run my “$2 Sale” twice a year that not only helps me clear out of seasonal inventory, but more importantly helps the community.

Coal Fired Delights A new gourmet pizzeria in North Kingstown Rhode Island has been on the cutting edge of pizza innovation for decades. Nowhere else do bakeries turn out the simple but delicious pizza strips (nothing but crust and tomato sauce), and grilled pizza was invented some 30 odd years ago at Al Forno in Providence. Rhode Island has hundreds of local pizza joints scattered across the state, and everyone has their own favorites. Providence Coal-Fired Pizza has been burning its 900-degree oven in Providence for three years now and recently opened a new outpost in North Kingstown. Located in the former 007 Bar & Grille on North Kingstown’s busy Post Road, Providence Coal-Fired Pizza has created an upscale atmosphere to serve their pizza. The space is expansive with a large bar area, perfect for watching sports and plenty of well-spaced tables to seat parties of any size. In the summer, the restaurant will feature an outdoor beer garden. Inside, the wood floors and wood-burning fireplace give it a homey touch, while the rest of the décor is decidedly modern. The open kitchen is the centerpiece of the restaurant, and your eyes will immediately go to the impressive, giant

sized Wood Stone Corporation Oven. The oven burns anthracite coal which is clean burning and very efficient with the heat reaching up to 900 degrees. There are plenty of big screen TVs scattered throughout the space – you won’t ever be far from the Bruins game. But unlike your local pizzeria, here you have cloth napkins and quality flatware to tackle your food with. I recently met some friends at Providence Coal-Fired Pizza, and we all started off with something to drink. The cocktail list has a variety of choices priced from $9-$11. One friend sampled the Orange Basil Mojito ($10) and loved the substitution of basil for the usual mint. The beer list has many offerings, including many available on draft. I wish there were a few more local options available, but I really enjoyed my Revival Zeppelin Hefeweizen ($6). With our drinks, we sampled a couple of appetizers from the oven: Baked Goat Cheese ($8) and a small order of Coal-Fired Wings ($12). The goat cheese was creamy, warm and decadent and perfect for spreading on the poofy pillows of pita bread straight from the oven. The cheese was also served with tangy, saucy roasted vegetables, but for me, these were superfluous to the cheese itself. The Coal-Fired

Wings were larger and meatier than the usual chicken wings served in a pizza place. No sauce was needed (in fact it would have masked the flavor of the chicken), and the wings were simply roasted with sea salt, rosemary and topped with onions. When it comes to choosing a pizza

from Providence Coal-Fired Pizza’s list of options, I wish you good luck! There were so many we wanted to try, we opted to order three individual sized pizzas instead of one large. The complex coal fired crust on each pizza was crisp on the outside but ended up a tad bit soggy towards the middle of the pie. We shared the BBQ Pork Pizza ($10), the Steak Pizza ($10) and the Clam Pizza ($10). The pork was the star of this pie; it was tender, juicy and flavorful. The pork shared space with roasted onions, homemade barbecue sauce, Monterey jack cheese and scallions. The shaved steak was beautifully complemented with Great Hill blue cheese, provolone, more of the roasted onions and crimini mushrooms. The menu said it also had hot peppers on it, but ours did not. It was like an amped up cheesesteak on a pizza crust. I loved the blue cheese and was glad that they included plenty of it. The idea of clams on a pizza scared me a bit, but I was glad I tried this unique concoction. This pizza contained local clams, sliced fingerling potatoes, rosemary, roasted red onions, pancetta and grated Parmesan Reggiano. I wasn’t sure I was

going to like this pizza, and I was pleasantly surprised. The clams did not overpower the pizza like I had imagined they would. Instead, they provided a delicate, briny flavor. Of the three pizzas I tried, the steak was my favorite – the blue cheese put it over the top – but overall, I thought the toppings were all well crafted and executed. There aren’t a lot of dessert choices here, but after all the pizza, you might not be hungry for it anyway. I needed a sweet bite of something when I was done, however, so I ordered the Butterscotch Pudding ($4). Though not fancy, the pudding reminded me of my Grandmother and provided a satisfying end to my meal. There’s no doubt, Rhode Islanders love their pizza. Providence Coal-

scene of Rhode Island are proud to point out how we have the highest direct-toconsumer sales of food of any state, at 10%. It is something to be proud of, but it also means there’s a lot of room for improvement. One of the ways we can bump up that percentage, and eat far fresher tastier local food, is by not abandoning those farmers markets that are accessible in the winter. It’s a delicious homework assignment. Coastal Growers Market at the Lafayette Mill is a cozy spot, with food trucks like Pat’s Pastured and Talullah’s Tacos manning the parking lot, hallways with jams, and an airy main hall humming with the sound of strings bowed and plucked. Yes, the veggies thin out midwinter, but some products are evergreen, like fish and mushrooms. More people think of fish when they think South County, but with the explosive growth of Rhode Island Mushroom Company, perhaps both should come to mind. Over their last two years Rhode Island mushroom company has gone from a basement operation at Sweet Berry Farm, to a mushroom farm in Warwick and expansion out to the Cape. Their striking baskets of golden oysters, maitakes and many other farmed mushrooms are of the highest quality, and in season they feature a dizzying array of foraged mushrooms, including many from in-state. This recipe marries the best of Rhode Island is high points, fish you can find locally from Matunuck Oyster Company, or the Local Catch, crisped with a spicy miso crust, and served in a delicious winterwarming miso broth.

Chef Jeanie Roland and her husband/business partner James Roland own Ella’s Fine Food & Drink in Westerly, along with another restaurant, The Perfect Caper, in Punta Gorda, Florida. We talked about running two restaurants in different states, local seasonal ingredients and where the name Ella came from. Neither you or James are from Rhode Island. Why did you choose Westerly for your restaurant? When we decided to open another restaurant, we chose Rhode Island to be close to my father who has a house in Charlestown. I spent all of my summers in Charlestown and fell in love with the area. Westerly is such a great city and we felt a restaurant like Ella’s would do well here. Who is Ella? The name Ella had been on my mental list for about two years before we found our location, which had been an iconic restaurant called Cappizano’s for over 50 years. We asked the Cappizano sons, Dave and Frank, what their mother’s name was. When they said Eleanor, we knew it had to be Ella’s! You refer to your food as “FrenchAsian inspired.” How do French and Asian cuisines inform and influence each other? The blend of the fresh and diverse flavors of Asian ingredients and the foundation of French techniques is just a great palate for a chef. It is easy to mix the techniques and flavors and create exciting food.

How do you balance running two businesses that are more than 1,000 miles apart? The only way we can run the two restaurants at the level they are run is due to the staff at The Perfect Caper. The management has taken ownership of the restaurant and this is essential for it to run as well as it does. My chef and sous chef were both trained from dishwashers to their current positions; my manager has been with us for ten years and is amazing. I am blessed to have people like that working with me. That makes it much easier. How does the seafood in Florida compare with Rhode Island? I feel the seasonality much more in New England and really enjoy this aspect as a chef. My preference has always leaned toward the coldwater fish, even at The Perfect Caper. What’s your favorite culinary season in Rhode Island?

What are your favorite local ingredients or products to cook with? My favorite local ingredients are corn, tomatoes and honey. You can do so much with all three in sweet and savory dishes. Where do you like to eat in Rhode Island when you go out? On my day off we like to stick close to home, mostly going to the Ocean House or grabbing a Grandma’s Pie and salad at Vetrano’s. What was it like making your way as a female chef in a male-dominated industry? Is it still the old boys’ club, or has it opened up? From the beginning I had to set myself apart by being assertive and knowing I had to be a lot better than my male counterparts. Has this changed? I would like to believe it has and will, but when women are still paid much less than men for the same job we are still fighting the same prejudices.

has drawn from his experiences of living in Rhode Island. “The woods of West Kingston and Richmond have definitely made their way into my songs, as well as the beaches, Route 1 and my experiences at South Kingstown High School and the University of Rhode Island. I have lived in southern Rhode Island my whole life up until this point, so I naturally feel a connection to the sights and people south of the tower. Playing in Providence for the last three or four years has also influenced my writing quite a bit. As long as I’m writing songs based on what I know, this state will always be a source of inspiration.” It’s great that technology has made music available to us at any time. Being able to stream our favorite band’s new albums while we laze about the house in our underwear is a modern miracle, no doubt. But it still doesn’t beat live music, and there is plenty of quality live music to be had. “The diversity of Rhode Island’s music scene is awesome,” Dylan says. “Obviously, the successes of Deer Tick, The Low Anthem and Brown Bird have been instrumental in establishing a strong roots rock and Americana scene.

Local Rhythms In this day and age of uncertainty with the music industry, it’s becoming increasingly important to support new and local artists. South County’s own Dylan Sevey and the Gentlemen will be performing at the Knickerbocker Cafe this month. The band’s strength lies in how they draw from several genres to create a signature sound, blending indie, folk, rock, blues and even an occasional hint of country. Having so many influences could easily result in a sonic disaster, but the band skillfully makes them gel. Check it out: their debut album, Join the Club, is streaming at dylansevey. bandcamp.com. One of the advantages of the digital age is that bands can make their material available online to convince us to get out of the house and support them. Dylan Sevey and the Gentlemen make a convincing case with Join the Club. As the band’s songwriter, Dylan’s influences are evident in the band’s material. “I have personally been influenced by many of the classic rock artists I grew up listening to: The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Led Zeppelin, The Band, Neil Young, etc. I have also learned quite a bit from groups like Wilco and My Morning Jacket, as well as any project Jack White has been a part of. I’m consistently drawn to artists with blues, folk and rock and roll roots.” No man is an island, and Dylan acknowledges that it’s the differing tastes of each Gentleman that forms the whole. “Steve Ellis, our bassist, plays in another group, Ask The Dead, that is rooted heavily in progressive rock and hardcore punk. Brendan Moore, our keyboardist, is both a classically trained pianist and an incredible jazz composer who has been influenced by Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane. Keaton Albro, our drummer, has played drums in musical theater settings, rock bands, concert bands, jazz ensembles, country acts and more. David Ponte, our lead guitarist, has listened to as much Robert Johnson as he has Pink Floyd.” As far as lyrical inspiration, Dylan

The punk and noise scenes are as active as they have ever been, and a good amount of artists who first helped to solidify Rhode Island as a legitimate music state – John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, Roomful Of Blues, Mark Cutler, etc. – are still playing.” Being a native of southern Rhode Island, he knows the value of performing outside of Providence and reaching the largest audience possible. “Providence, being the capital and biggest city in the state, obviously has a wealth of venues, but there are great places to play all over the state. It’s exciting to play in a scene with so many exceptional artists and venues.”

display at the upcoming Artists League of Rhode Island show at the new gallery at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence. Lined up like sentinels atop a display box along one studio wall are a selection of Tiffany’s signature Coral Series ceramic sculptures which, grouped together, indeed look very much like a colony of pillar corals. Standing up to two feet high, these tall, hollow sculptures are hand formed and shaped around a dowel before being dried, bisque-fired in an electric kiln, then glazed and fired again in a Japanese-style raku kiln. The process has unpredictable effects on the copper blue, metallic and lithium green glaze, crackling the surface in some places while enhancing or muting colors in others, resulting in works of art that are truly one-of-a-kind and unreproducable. Even taller versions of these diveinspired sculptures are on the way: Adams recently invested in a new, larger kiln, and her work has found its way into galleries like Studio 460 and A Coastal Living Gallery in North Kingstown, and Just Art in Providence. She has also been commissioned to provide sculptures for the recentlyopen Wicked Fish restaurant in North Kingstown. “My work incorporates my three loves: the ocean, working with clay and travel,” she says. Soon it will be time for Tiffany to start exploring again: this month she’ll

embark on another long road trip, this time from Rhode Island to the Florida Keys with her daughter as her traveling companion. The itinerary includes stops at a few art shows along the East Coast as well as diving in Key Largo in search of new forms, colors and textures. As always, she says, “The ocean will be my inspiration.”

describes their progression from neophyte to master as a journey, but for Tiffany Adams that peregrination has been more literal than for most. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Tiffany always knew she was destined to be an artist (“I was the only girl in wood shop in 9th grade,” she says), but discovered her skill in ceramics at the end of a long road – the 30,000-mile Pan-American highway, to be exact. In her early 20s, Tiffany was at a crossroads: go to design school to learn woodworking, or throw caution to the wind and join a friend on an epic drive from southern California through Mexico and Central America to Venezuela. The road less traveled proved to be the right choice: during her months-long adventure, Adams learned Spanish, took a ceramics workshop in Oaxaca, and ultimately enrolled in the University de Los Andes in Merida, Venezuela to study ceramics and pottery. There, she also took private sculpture classes with Argentinian sculptor Mario Columbo, learning wheel-throwing, hand-building and glaze-making. “Wheel thrown pots turned to hand built pots, then to large coil built vessels and then to my tall coral series sculptures, all inspired by simplified forms in nature,” she explains. An equally momentous trip to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands not only reinforced Adams’ love affair with the sea – a major influence on her ceramic work – but also connected her with the love of her life, her husband Mark Bombard, a Rhode Island native then working as a Caribbean dive instructor. Settling together in Exeter, the couple raised two daughters while Mark became director of the aquatics program at the Kent County YMCA and Tiffany honed her skills at the pottery wheel and kiln, earning a bachelor of fine arts degree at Rhode Island College. Working out of a post-and-beam studio built by Mark, Tiffany produces a variety of work that includes large, coil-built vessels – an ancient and timeconsuming technique where each piece is slowly constructed using coils of clay.
