I
t isn’t often that I get to spend a whole afternoon at a salon. (I mean, unless you live a life of luxury, it isn’t often that anyone gets to do that.) But I did, and it was fabulous, and it should be on your bucket list to spoil yourself like that at least once in your life. A whole afternoon, though? It’s a big commitment. Admittedly, I struggled with that, worrying about other obligations, worrying about how I would get my errands done, just, well, worrying too much. But then Richard from Kenneth Cote Renewal Center called and told me what we’d be doing for my day of pampering. I dropped my schedule and got in the car. True to its name, Kenneth Cote offers all of the services you could want: facials, massage, hair, makeup, nails. Jessica greeted me and brought me to my first stop: hair. She washed my hair with Moroccan Oil shampoo, and then painted on the deep conditioning mask with a brush. Moroccan Oil is made from argan oil, which is a styling secret
that has only just taken hold in America. It’s deeply nourishing and controls frizz like nothing else. “This was made for people with precisely your texture,” Jessica said, indicating my curls. “I recommend this for clients with waves every four to six weeks, especially in the winter.” Smoothing out my very curly hair is no easy feat, but Jessica did it beautifully. She used more Moroccan Oil and a temporary, 24-hour keratin product. After, feeling fabulous and relaxed already, I headed to the makeup chair. Bob greeted me warmly and asked what I would be doing for the evening so he could make me up accordingly. He used Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics and applied a beautiful evening face. I was especially glad to have his help when wearing cheetah – I always put on too much, go too vampy, and look like a fashion don’t. Bob created a complementary palette that wasn’t too much. Next, I headed to the nail area, where Lori greeted me and offered me a huge tray of colors for my Shellac manicure. Shellac, a gel polish cured by UV light, is my new addiction. Because the gel cures so beautifully, it lasts for two weeks, and is as high shine at the end as the beginning. It’s worth every penny of the splurge. Kenneth Cote does
a nice twist on the traditional Shellac. After my nails were done, Lori put my hands in bags of oils. “This is an all-natural alternative to paraffin,” she explained. It was a mixture of olive and jojoba oil, with lots of natural emollients and delicious smelling elixirs. My hands went into heated pads for a few minutes, and came out soft and luxurious. After all of that, I felt like I had been on a minivacation. Being in the salon for that long, talking beauty and glamour for three hours, was more than just aesthetically improving. Promoting Culture The Rhode Island Council for the Humanities, the only organization in the state that provides funding for humanities projects, has announced their 2013 Major Grants Awards. These grants, totaling $188,088, have been awarded to 22 organizations across the state and will go towards projects ranging from supporting new interpretive materials for public exhibitions for cultural sites, supporting K-12 civic education, piloting GIS and smartphone technology, reopening the FirstWorks dialogue surrounding the controversial ballet Rite of Spring in its 100th anniversary and assisting Rhode Island’s 14th regiment, a troup of high school aged reenacters

As far as South County is concerned, a grant of $11,650 was awarded to the Jamestown Historical Society to create and improve didactic signage at the Jamestown Windmill that was built in 1787. Horse Happiness While it may be unorthodox to consider the mentality of a horse when finding inner happiness, Jamestown resident Brian Reid accomplishes just that. Reid’s love of horses began in his teens and soon inspired him to combine his life coaching background with his inner equestrian. “I was interested in how horses could enhance our lives by showing us how to get out of our own way and let who we are be. The deeper I looked into it the more I discovered that horses were living the principles that we held as truths. Principles like: “To thine own self be true” “to be or not to be,” “living in the moment,” “being present,” “feeling connected.” I began to offer this to others at workshops with Brenda Lee my 1800 pound Shire mare, and the response was powerful and the results effective. The attendees at these workshops were therapists, yoga instructors, energy workers, teachers and the like. I offer it as a model, to look at where we are and to see that in any moment in life there is freedom and power if we will see it,” says Reid.
His 13 principles are incorporated into his 15-year connection with Brenda Lee at his online academy, Horses Know the Way Home, it boasts a DVD package, featuring Brenda Lee and his three dogs, as well as a community forum to better your life and happiness. It had been over five years since a performance last took place at the Greenwich Odeum, but at the end of last month, life was restored to the venue that was once a staple of East Greenwich’s Main Street. Originally known as the Greenwich Theater when it first opened in 1926, it started out as a vaudeville house before changing to a movie theater, but closed in 1990 as multi-screen theaters became more popular. It reopened four years later in 1994, with its new name “The Odeum” and saw a successful run last for 13 years, before having to close due to fire code restrictions. Major renovations and upgrades were put into place to make this historic theater safe and accessible for people today. Having seen its share of highs and lows, The Odeum has once again made a grand re-entrance after a five year absence. “It’s very exciting that after being closed for five years we’ll once again be able to contribute greatly to the social and cultural

Winter has set, in but that doesn’t mean we have to settle for cozy afternoons by the fire reading a book and sipping tea. Wait, that’s not exactly a bad thing - but let’s just say you want to mix things up a little bit. In an attempt to avoid cabin fever, set out into the wilderness and let the cold wind caress your face. Now, there is really no wilderness in southeastern New England. But for those of us city or suburb bound, a little open space can seem huge; and in a place as small as Rhode Island, where there is basically a Dunkin Donuts on every corner, these open spaces are gems. They are places to be enjoyed for their feelings of solitude or with the company of your choice. Whether a novice in need of a gorgeous view, or a seasoned hiker with a want for a bit of a challenge, we’ve got your hiking needs covered. To begin with, always check the weather and dress appropriately. Personally, I would not go hiking during a rainstorm. I would, however, watch the snow fall over the ocean, but I am a bit of a romantic. A good base layer of thermals always gets me through either a light or more challenging hike. Wearing a windproof jacket also makes life immeasurably more enjoyable while choosing to spend time in the cold. Speaking of snow, contrary to popular belief, hiking after a snowfall is a great idea for a number of reasons. If you have never had the pleasure of being the first to walk a trail after a snowfall, add it to your bucket list. The quiet serenity of walking in the woods while hearing fresh snow crunching under your boots is something out of a Laura Ingalls Wilder novel. The sight of snow at the tide line is also something that
leaves me in awe. Snow on the beach never lasts too long, so it’s always a treat when you finally do see it.
Take in the view at Beavertail Sometimes in the cold air, all you can do is take in the view in a gorgeous location. That is what is so great about Beavertail State Park in Jamestown. As you make your way down Conanicut Island, past beautiful farmland,
Beavertail Lighthouse. It’s only a quintessential New England experience to be sitting on the rocks in front of the lighthouse, hearing the horn blowing and feeling the salt spray on your face. No big deal. What’s more, we have the luxury of special winter guests that grace our rocky coastlines, Harlequin ducks. These medium sized, northern nesting birds overwinter in our “warmer” waters and dive and dabble for food source. Mollusks, crustaceans, insects,
past the historic Jamestown windmill, across Zeke’s Creek and finally winding around to the southern point at Beavertail, this point looks south into the Atlantic and separates the East and West passages. This rocky outcrop is never shy on gorgeous, big crashing waves and, oh did I mention: the
bait fish and roe (found in marine and riverine environments) make up their varied diet. Male Harlequin ducks are exquisite in their plumage. They exhibit a slate blue base, chestnut sides and vibrant white markings including a white dot on their cheek. Adorable. Whether I am

out with my spotting scope or binoculars in hand, I know that I will have a good chance of seeing these ducks if I make the effort to leave the couch.

Trustom Pond offers glimpses of wildlife Now, if I actually want to brave the cold and hike it out, I will pick a day where the wind is calm and the sun is shining and head on down to Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge. And yes, I will bring my spotting scope, binoculars or camera, or some combination, because there is always something to see at Trustom. It is a unique place. After you park in the gravel parking lot and leave your car, you walk into trails that are situated in coastal shrubland and mixed forest. Expect to see your typical overwintering birds such as White-crowned sparrows, Dark-eyed juncos, Tufted titmice and Black-capped chickadees as you walk the trails. Also, keep an eye out for the deer trails that are tucked away beneath the shrubs. I always feel like I’ve been let in on some secret the moment I recognize a deer trail or catch a glimpse of a White-tailed deer out of the corner of my eye. But, when I go to Trustom, my heart is set on getting to the coastal pond. I want to see my overwintering dabbling ducks. I need to see them. I need to see the Buffleheads, the Common Goldeneye, the Ring-necked Ducks. They are so cute. I can’t deal with it. Especially the Buffleheads, they are so little and while they are diving for food it’s always a game to see where they will pop up. Trustom is multifaceted. These birds of prey will be hunting all year round, and, because of the open fields that Trustom offers, you will have a birdseye view of prime hunting opportunities and may even catch a predatorprey interaction in person. But let’s say you want to head inland. Maybe the thought of being too close to the ocean in the winter is more than you can bear — you’re clearly not from around here. That’s okay, let’s go to Arcadia Management Area, and head to Breakheart Pond. This is a favorite spot of mine regardless of the time of year. It’s a short hike that gives me my nature fix. It combines a typical New England mixed forest, so even though the deciduous trees are barren at the moment, the white pines are holding down the fort and providing the greenery in these wintry months. This trail can easily be hiked with a good pair of boots or with snow shoes after a snowfall. It’s entirely up to you what you are in the mood for. This is one of those spots where hiking in the winter time makes me think of the spring and how much places like these come alive with the melting of the snow. I start to think about spring
peepers, and wood frogs and turning over rotting logs in the hopes of catching a Red-backed salamander or even a Spotted salamander. I look into the pond and see logs and rocks along the edges. It makes me think about the painted and spotted turtles that will be sunning themselves and resting on these in the not-to-distant future. Winter makes me grateful for the spring and gives me an appreciation for patience and the natural order of things. I used to live on a pond; it was a beautiful and strange moment in my life. When a pond freezes and decides to shift, and furthermore is surrounded by mostly protected land, the effect is incredible. The sound is alien. It brings you back to a time where people were more in touch with their environment. It’s visceral. That is what being outside is the winter is like, a visceral reaction to an environment that you may or may not be entirely in touch with. So go out an enjoy it! Although it may just be for a short amount of time, it’s long enough to get your outdoor fix and explore areas you may not have thought of or see wildlife you never thought you would see.

But this waterfront restaurant now has a warmly lit main dining room on the first level and a handsome working fireplace. On February 14, a special Valentine’s menu will include local wild oysters on the half shell, green mango and cashew salad with prawns and lemongrass vinaigrette, char-grilled pork chop with dried cranberry and port reduction sauce, and decadent chocolate-dipped strawberries with caramel whipped cream for dessert. Much to the surprise
of everyone I’ve ever met — especially myself — I started exercising last month. There’s no explanation for it, really. I had spent 30 perfectly content years sitting and reading. Then one day, feeling run down and stressed out, I decided that I was going to take a yoga class. It was a lazy person’s revelation: I could lay down and work out at the same time. I loved how I felt afterwards — limber, strong, relaxed. The five pounds I lost after two weeks of regular classes didn’t hurt, either. But then, something terrible happened. I wanted to do more exercise, and worse, more strenuous exercise. So when I found myself with the opportunity to work out with Dorne Jacavone at Balance Personal Fitness Training, I took it. (For context, my boss screwed up her face and said “Really? You? Why?” when I agreed.) In all honesty, I was scared. I expected Dorne to beat me down with cardio and weights into a quivering mass of sweat and tears, and to possibly need to be brought home via ambulance.
From ranges to smallwares, we have it all! So, you might say it was a pleasant surprise to find a perky, energetic woman in yoga clothes standing in the middle of an expansive, mostly empty studio space. Dorne greeted me, and we sat down to talk about my fitness goals and my level of ability. Then we started with some calisthenic warmups that got my blood moving while emphasizing stretching and balance. So far so good. Then, we transitioned into moves with a balance ball. “You don’t see a lot of weights around here,” Dorne said. “Not what you were expecting, right? I love using the body as a weight. I want to show people exercises they can do at home. No excuses.” We worked through sets of exercises, all of which felt attainable. When Dorne saw that I could easily do something, she modified it to be more challenging but not impossible. “I want my clients to build confidence, and help them be motivated to do this on their own,” she explained. “To make positive choices every day.” Our workout then progressed into
working on a mat – and, to my joy, we started using yoga poses as a basis for more rigorous exercises. With her coaching, I even did push ups. “Everyone hates these,” she said, “but I think you might actually like them.” I did. Who knew? Of course, for more physically fit people, there are much more rigorous exercises, some including kettlebells and dumbbells. Dorne showed me more advanced modifications on the poses I was doing as a way to both make me feel better about how hard I was working and to give me something to aspire to. “Each session is customized because each person is an individual. There is not a ‘one size fits all’ workout,” she said. At the end of our hour, I felt great. I had sweat, but I never got to a place that felt like it was too difficult or demanding. I also felt refreshed, lengthened, strong and accomplished. I walked out of Balance with a clear head and a vow to do that again, and soon. 99 Frenchtown Road, East Greenwich. 451-8809

Through the Artisan’s Eye Marie Theriault on shopping for local inspiration in Wakefield Your store, Artisans Boutique, has an interesting premise behind it. What’s your inspiration? In my “other life” I am an attorney dealing with significant issues involving humans of all walks of life. This past summer, the opportunity arose to open the Boutique and to surround myself with locally created and extraordinary gifts. Everything here is local and handmade. I have carefully chosen my artisans and I have established a knowledgeable and personal relationship with each. But most of all, I am thankful to Luisa DeLuca who was my initial artisan consultant and advisor and whom without I may not have accomplished opening the boutique.
How do you create a personalized experience for your customers? From the start, my skills allowed me to personalize each and every artisan and his or her work with great detail. I have several customers who shop by appointment only due to their schedules and I also offer the personal service of retrieving items directly from my artisans for the customer. For example, if a client would like to try on a jewelry piece that they saw on an artisans website, I can bring the piece to the boutique instead of the customer traveling to Providence or Pawtucket. I have also arranged for my customers who purchased paintings to meet the artist in person. I provide a unique and personalized service to my customers and I am loyal to my artisans. What’s a versatile jewelry style that’s popular this winter? All of my jewelry artisans offer exquisite and unique pieces. Amie Plante’s

oxidized silver pieces and Luisa DeLuca’s glass and stone pieces are very earthy. The “movie stars” purchase Jessica Ricci’s jewelry and her Raw Collection displays colors that are brilliant and will take away the winter blues. What qualities should readers look for in handmade jewelry versus store-bought? In my opinion, there really is no comparison to the jewelry that I offer for sale. I have carefully chosen only four jewelry artisans thus far and their jewelry tells a story that is unique to each piece and therefore unique to each customer who has purchased jewelry at the boutique. For example, many of Jessica Ricci’s pieces were designed from lace that she found in Rome, Paris and Buenos Aires. Her stories are inspiring and may be viewed on her website. Amie Plante’s creations are also like no other and may also be viewed in more detail on her website.
What’s the new trend in home goods at your store? Oliveira Textiles. Dawn Oliviera creates brilliant and consciences products with her water based, environmentally safe dyed, organic cotton hemp and/or silk collections. She was recently featured in Yankee Magazine. Her creations range from being commissioned to re-design homes with her fabrics and pillows or to make the perfect dress for a special event. She also designs coats, hats, belts and small purses (to mention a few) with her unique fabrics. What piece can you not live without that you sell? Too difficult to choose but if I were to hit a small lottery, I would purchase all of my custom made wood furniture from Corwin Butterworth, my dishes would be stoneware made by Bev Blitzer and glass from Alice Gebhart, my bowls would be made by Lynnworks and my walls would be graced with Linda’s paintings. Many
of my small rugs would be designed and made by Dolores Bannister. I would only use Cathryn Violet’s soaps in my bath and shower (as my family does now) and I would display small photo’s of my family and friends on Nancy’s beach rock holders. Last but not least, I would commission Scribe Calligraphy to make my party invitations. Do you feel that the “locally made” brand is an extension of the Rhode Island lifestyle? Yes. In Rhode Island we are graced with miles and miles of pristine shores and preserved land. We protect our environment, we love to farm, garden and eat lots of local seafood. So why purchase goods made in other countries when we can foster our own economy and buy the best right here in RI. Why do you think it’s important to support local artists? I have committed to selling only Rhode Island artisan goods because I believe in giving back. Personally, I cannot efficiently market items unless I meet the artisan in person, establish a unique and individual relationship and learn about the process of the creation. I must want to purchase each and every item I offer for sale.

The Emma Ivins House survived fires and floods to become this artful home
Walking Through History A historic guest cottage in Narragansett merges modern comforts with old world charm

Nelson had loved the small Victorian cottage in Wakefield they restored throughout the 1990s. They planned to stay there for quite some time and enjoy the fruits of their labor, but when their third child came along, they agreed they had outgrown the charming space and needed something with a little more room to grow. John, a general contractor who builds new homes and renovates old ones, concedes he has a soft spot for restoration projects. “I’ve always taken a shine to older structures,” he says with a laugh, adding that Cynthia also has never backed down from a challenge. The young family looked at several homes throughout South County, finally stumbling on a craftsmenstyle guest cottage in Narragansett’s Earlscourt Historic District. Named
for the prominent New York attorney Edward Earle, the neighborhood once included several grand villas, many owned by wealthy families who summered in the sunny South County colony. According to an article published in the New York Times on July 28, 1912, a “disastrous fire” broke out around noon that day that caused such a commotion, “Women in bathing suits rushed to the scene.” The fire was exacerbated by strong winds and inadequate water pressure, and many homes were completely destroyed or seriously compromised. The article continues, “There was considerable excitement at the Casino and clubs.” One of the casualties, a two and a half story Victorian named The Breezes, belonged to William Ivins of New York City. Though the expansive home was a complete loss, the guest cottage,
named the Emma Ivins House after Ivins’ daughter, survived. More than a century after the house was built, it was welcoming new inhabitants. The Emma Ivins House is located near the well-known Earles Court Water Tower. The cylindrical stone tower, completed in 1887, once supplied water to homes in the Earlscourt development. It originally had an additional wooden structure on top, but according to the South County Museum, it was lost in a hurricane. When the Nelsons looked at the home, they decided the 1903 charmer had heaps of potential, anchored by an impressive great room that turned out to be the selling point. “It was right up our alley,” describes John. Despite its well-heeled history, the house is better known as “The Hut.” “I don’t know who nicknamed it,” adds
John, “but it resembles a hunting lodge to a degree.” Both he and Cynthia had heard musings The Hut was an actual hunting lodge that was moved to the locale from New Hampshire — practically an urban legend in Earlescourt. “But that’s just not true,” laughs John. The couple bought the home in 1998 with a long wish list of renovations and nothing but time to tackle each. They drew inspiration from other homes also on the National Register of Historic Places nearby, including the Sherry Cottages, a group of four similarly designed shingle style dwellings built circa 1889. According to the South County Museum, they were built by famed architectural trio McKim, Mead and White for Louis Sherry, a New York restaurateur and caterer who managed the Narragansett Casino. 1912, the Nelson’s approximately 3,000 sq. ft. home did fall victim to fire damage some time during the 1960s. John believes a wing that extended along the back of the home likely housed additional bedrooms and a common living space that made the house’s total square footage somewhere between 4500 and 5000. Today the space is home to a garage and pool. The first renovation the house needed was evident. “It had a 1970s Brady Bunch kitchen,” John says, laughing. The space obviously needed to be reinvented, but where they could, the couple kept the home’s architectural integrity intact. “We modernized a lot of things, but we kept its older character,” says John, adding that visitors can find quirky elements in the nooks and crannies. As the couple entertains frequently, the great room is a space that is especially useful and comfortable, and the two were careful to restore most of its original elements. Chock full of fireplaces, the family restored some and added others. “We got an old fireplace from Aardvark [Antiques] in Newport and it was an old slate faux marble piece and it’s probably 1875-ish,” says John. Some features he built from
scratch, including oak built-ins, while others are original, like the hardwood pine flooring throughout. “They could probably use a good old fashioned sanding - it’s a lived-in home,” he says. Cynthia, an accomplished artist and RISD alumna, is an illustrator, painter and sculptor. From expansive murals to stunning framed landscapes to eyecatching statuary, her work gives the home a creative and original appeal. “She’s extremely talented and we enjoy her work throughout the home,” says John. One of the home’s bedrooms has been repurposed as her studio. With a balcony leading to the outdoors and letting the warm air in during the summer months, it’s an inspiring space. John, a Wakefield native, enjoys living not too far from his old stomping grounds, as he calls the area. Their high school and college age children have many friends and as John puts it, “Growing up in Narragansett, a lot of people have been in the Nelson house.” And all have walked through a piece of history.

Sweet Recovery The dining scene across South County is still recovering after Hurricane Sandy We recently took a ride through Misquamicut expecting to see storm damage, but we were shocked at what we saw – the contents of so many homes piled up by the side of the road waiting to be hauled away and empty lots where businesses once stood. The Misquamicut section of Westerly really took the brunt of Hurricane Sandy’s storm surges last October. The Ocean House in Westerly will hold a black-and-white masquerade on Saturday, February 23, to benefit residents of Misquamicut devastated by the super storm. The gala is a modernday take on the famous Black & White Ball held by author Truman Capote. Just as Capote asked of his guests, the Ocean House will request its guests to wear black and/or white cocktail attire and to don creative masks for an element of mystery. The event begins at 7pm and includes an open bar and food stations. Tickets are $125 per person. All proceeds will benefit a Westerly Chamber initiative to support local beach recovery efforts. For reservations, call 584-7000, or book online at www.OceanHouseEvents.om. Fortunately, the Ocean House sustained minimal damage to its facilities during the hurricane. During the storm and in the ensuing days, the hotel’s restaurants provided food for local fire personnel, police and national guardsmen stationed at checkpoints in the community. By the way, the Ocean House has won a number of honors in recent months. The grand hotel and its restaurants were recently named one of the best newcomers to the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List. The Ocean House also made Travel + Leisure’s Top 500 World’s Best Hotels list, as the top-ranking hotel in Rhode Island. TARA’S REOPENS Tara’s Tipperary Tavern at 907 Matunuck Beach Road, Matunuck, is another local business that sustained damage when Hurricane Sandy hit the area last October. The good news is that it has reopened after making some necessary repairs. The weekly menu lineup includes home-style specials every Tuesday, children eat for $2 on Wednesday,

What are some of the local favorites? Our most famous sandwich is made a variety of ways on homemade focaccia bread, made fresh daily. Focaccia sandwiches are stuffed with grean beans, spinach, chicken, Italian cold cuts and topped with roasted red peppers and fresh mozzarella. In season we add to these summer squash, eggplant and broccoli rabe. I’ve personally gone in many times and absolutely love the pesto pizza with tomato and romano cheese. Is it a family recipe for pesto that you use in your eatery? Our pesto pizza with tomatoes is at its best when local tomatoes are in season along with fresh basil. Lots of fresh basil, olive oil, garlic and pine nuts are ground to perfection – this pesto was introduced to me in the 1960s by some Italian friends in New York City. The pesto was served with linguine and half the neighborhood brought salads, cheeses and desserts for the feast. In the summer we sell many traditional margarita tomato pesto pizzas, along with other versions with tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella added. Anyway you want it, we will make it, and you will love it. Speaking of family recipes, what are some comfort foods you love to make at home? I don’t spend much time at home, since we are open seven days from 9am to 8pm in season. I like to grill fresh veggies marinated in olive oil, garlic and hot

pepper flakes outside. Added to this I might grill chicken breast, sausage or other meats marinated the same. Do you have any pet peeves from other cooks compared with what you do as authentic Italian cooks? I have seen many cooks make Italian specialties like tomato sauce with canned tomatoes, tomato paste, water and dried herbs. I make our sauce using everything fresh – tomatoes, basil, parsley, garlic and a touch of paste for sweetness. We are told by many how good our sauce is. The sauce and fresh dough is what makes our pizza so good. What influenced you to open an Italian eatery? We lived in Vermont for 21 years and ran an inn. In the early ‘80s all of our guests (70-80) were served breakfast and dinner daily. As our clientele grew, more sophisticated our chef had to change from a family style table of eight to ten to dinners make to order. This was a challenge for many of our chefs, to be ready for 40 to 60 people in a three hour period. At this time, I spent more time in the kitchen watching every order from preparation to serving. I took over the cooking operation. Soon we were serving lasagna, pasta with sauce or primavera along with fresh fish and grilled meats. This led us to Rhode Island to an Italian restaurant without the headache of 24 guest rooms and its many problems related to hotel management
What about the focaccia bread? It’s always soft and full of herbs. How long did it take to perfect that recipe? Focaccia bread is not as simple as it may look. A wetter dough must be used and twice as much time consummating procedures in preparation. There is much practice needed in balling, resting, rolling, proofing, seasoning and reproofing before baking. All of this may take four to five hours depending on heat and humidity. Every day is a challenge making this bread. I have to talk about your desserts. There is nothing I like more than a facesized cookie. Is there a story behind making them so large? Our desserts are all homemade. Cannoli, biscotti, blondies and brownies are made along with our cookies. We have been told that are cannoli are the best in town. Not being a baker is challenging, cooking is inventive and not exact. Baking is constant trial and error with temperature being the most important. Too hot an oven makes smaller and darker cookies and with three ovens to watch, temperature watching is crucial. Our next baking challenge is St. Joseph’s Day when we make our zeppole, anywhere from 700 to 1200 starting around March 12 to Easter. When people think of Westerly, they don’t always realize just how influenced it is the Italian culture and immigrants. Does your family have roots going back to the old country? Westerly has been the home to Calabrian Italians for a few generations. The old downtown is referred to as little Italy. There are many old customs to this day, with families making red wines and an Italian dry sausage called suppi together as a group twice a year. My wife’s family has roots back to Sicily just south of Calabria. There are many old Italian traditions at Christmas, Easter and St. Joseph’s Day all regarding specialty foods served, which we do at home and at Fra’s.

A Taste of Childhood Classic Italian done right in Westerly a Westerly strip mall, Vetrano’s is definitely one of those “you can’t judge a book by its cover” type of restaurants. It might not look like much from the outside, but the food – the wonderful Italian food – is really the only thing that matters at Vetrano’s. I grew up in a mostly Italian household. Every Saturday night my parents would take me with them when they went out to eat, invariably at an oldfashioned Italian restaurant where they served macaroni, not pasta. To this day, I am still in search of the flavors of my youth, whether it’s a meatball or a slice of pizza. Vetrano’s – especially its basic pomodoro sauce – comes very close to those childhood memories. There’s a lot to consider on the menu, with entire pages devoted to pizza and pasta dishes plus chicken, veal and seafood dinners. We tried our best but could not stop eating the garlicky bread that was brought to our table, which ended up serving as our appetizer. On our first visit to this Italian restaurant, a Sunday afternoon, we ordered two dishes that came with house salads in wooden bowls, something I have not seen in a restaurant in many years. The salad greens were a bit limp, but the creamy garlic dressing livened them up. The true test for any classic red sauce restaurant, at least in my mind, is the Vitello alla Parmigiana ($17.95), or

Veal Parmigiana. Vetrano’s gets an A+, a perfect 10, and a gold medal for their generous serving of a tender veal cutlet, breaded and pan fried, then baked with a topping of pomodoro sauce, parmesan cheese and plenty of mozzarella. Also getting high marks was one of the seafood specialties, Linguine alla Vongole ($15.95). This was a goodsized bowl of linguine pasta topped with a white clam sauce and a half-dozen cherrystone clams with their shells open and the meaty yet tender clams waiting to be tasted. Done right, this is a subtly flavored dish, one that I find myself craving every now and then. On another night, we tried two more pasta dishes – Lasagna della Casa ($14.95) and the Italian Festival ($15.95). A man of few words when it comes to food, Brian said the lasagna “wasn’t bad” as he ate every bite of the wide pasta noodles layered with ricotta cheese and sauce. The Italian Festival gave me a little bit of everything – manicotti, cheese ravioli and stuffed shells baked with pomodoro sauce and mozzarella cheese. We knew we’d be needing a little meat with these meatless pasta dishes so we ordered a side of meatballs ($3.95 for two large ones), which were excellent. On another night, it was just pizza but two very different kinds. One was a White Clam ($18.50 for a large hand-

tossed New York-style pizza), and the other was a Pepperoni Sicilian deepdish pizza ($17.95). For me, the gold standard when it comes to clam pizzas is the now-famous original Frank Pepe’s in New Haven. Vetrano’s is quite different from that coal-fired pizza, but I have to say it’s a close second with the thin, hand-stretched dough totally covered with plenty of chopped clams and just the right amount of prosciutto. This is the kind of pizza you keep eating even after you’re feeling full, just for the pure taste of the briny clams and salty prosciutto. With a glass of pinot grigio, I was a happy woman. The Sicilian pizza is a whole different animal, more than an inch thick and topped first with thinly sliced pepperoni and then a generous layer of a blend of Italian cheeses that melt to completely hide the meat toppings. With this kind of deep-dish pizza, two slices and I’m done. Now for those of you who (like me) order pizza so you can have it for breakfast the next day, the thick Sicilian pizza is pretty wonderful while the clam pizza is better off saved for a late-night snack with more of that chilled white wine. We also can recommend Vetrano’s 12-inch house grinders ($6.95 to $8.50),
especially the basic Italian submarine sandwich, a large soft roll filled with Italian cold cuts and just a little chopped tomato and slivers of dark salad greens. That Sunday afternoon’s visit to Vetrano’s reminded me of so many Sunday afternoon dinners growing up in my mostly Italian home. At Vetrano’s, all around us were tables of families, small and large, two and three generations, dipping their bread in the olive oil, twirling the spaghetti with their forks and grabbing yet another slice of pizza. Vetrano’s is the place to go for old-fashioned, classic Italian food, a lot like mama used to make. sound like a job for the paparazzi, but these superstars of the natural world the lions and tigers and bears that serve as the “poster children” for environmentalism - are even more camera-shy than royals on a secret getaway to the Maldives. For wildlife photographer Gerald Krausse, that means a lot of hours out in the woods trying to be stealthy and patient enough to get the elusive “money shot” of animals doing what they naturally do, without any influence from man. “More often than not, it’s a waiting game with nothing to show for. But I never look at it that way,” says Krausse, 75, who took up photography and videography about a decade ago after retiring from a career as a professor at URI’s College of the Environment and Life Sciences (CELS). “In nature, where everything is random and unpredictable, one cannot go on a shoot with any expectations and or goals in mind - otherwise, disappointment will get you every time.” Wildlife photography is actually Krausse’s third career: he worked as a pastry chef before getting his masters in geography and moving to Rhode Island in the mid-1970s. “I have always been very visual in everything I do,” he says. “In my publications I have always included maps and have used a lot of my own slides and visual handouts in my classes. During my research trips to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, I used photography as an important research tool and for class use.” Studying and teaching geography and cartography fed Krausse’s interest in the interrelationship between man and nature, and he decided to focus on video rather than photography because it incorporated motion and sound – it added challenges that photographers don’t have to contend with. “While I was still working, I went out to do some filming here and there, mostly around my neighborhood and then in Rhode Island at large,” says Krausse. “I started with simple

cameras and easy subjects — vegetation, scenery and weather — that are easy to approach and will ‘stay there.’ Over time, and with some experience, I have moved on to more difficult and fleeting subjects, such as wildlife.” Krausse produced his first video in 2006, documenting 75 local species including small mammals, birds, insects and amphibians, all shot in the National Wildlife Refuges of Rhode Island, including Trustom Pond, Ninigret Pond and Sachuest Point. As his skills have grown, so have the size of his subjects and the scope of his projects. Currently, Krausse is working on films about black bears in Maine and the maritime birds of Narragansett Bay, among others. All are multi-year efforts involving countless hours spent in the field as well as editing and production. In his work, Krausse tries to improve understanding about his subjects, highlight public involvement in the species (such as protection, volunteerism and recreation), and explore ongoing research and management issues. “Teaching is still in my blood, except now it’s more on an informal level
rather than in the classroom,” he says. “I am very passionate in what I do. Otherwise, nobody would go though the trials and tribulations required to complete these projects. Patience, persistence and a lot of torture are required to get commercially valuable footage.” For Krausse, however, it’s all made worthwhile when he gets that perfect shot and has the opportunity to share his work with the public, whether that’s through sales of his videos at the Kettle Pond Visitor Center in Charlestown or during presentations at hospitals, schools and nursing homes organized through the URI Speakers Bureau. There’s also satisfaction in partnering with environmental groups to raise awareness of the often overlooked and underappreciated natural world around us. “People always ask me what I do during my retirement,” he says. “So far, it’s been the best time of my life. I do what I love, I can be creative, I can work alone, I might inspire others to become stewards of the environment, I have the time to do this kind of work, and I make a bit of money in the process.”

I’ve never been particularly good at picking favorites, but when it comes to catching a concert in the Ocean State, Joe Fletcher is without a doubt my top billing. One part Americana rock, one part folksy blues and one hundred percent good for your soul, Joe’s music is the kind that brings people together and spreads a smile and a good shoe stomp across the room. His album White Lighter by Joe Fletcher and the Wrong Reasons is the soundtrack to the better part of my late nights and Sunday morning cups of coffee, and harkens back to older times with rich lyrics and full-bodied musicianship. See him perform just once, and you can tell that this man was made to play music. His husky voice, riling guitar rhythms, and earnest stage presence demand an audience, and I dare you to try and stay still during a dose of his rambling rock and roll. A lover of all things live music, I’ve been lucky enough to see Joe go from playing Sunday sessions at my favorite hole in the wall in Brooklyn to taking the stage to a packed lawn at Fort Adams State Park during this past summer’s Newport Folk Festival. After his set, on what was easily the biggest day of his musical career to date, Joe joined a group of kids from the local Boys and Girls Club and myself under the trees. We sat in a circle on the damp grass, with Joe leading a Woodie Guthrie sing-a-long before answering questions. His girlfriend Mackenzie Holway sat behind him, snapping photos. Offstage, stripped of the lights and sound equipment and surrounded by inquisitive preteens, Joe’s passion for his craft remained just as poignant. It has been a huge year for Joe Fletcher and the Wrong Reasons. After leaving a job teaching high school English to put a full-time effort behind his music, Fletcher has gone nothing but full steam ahead, embarking on his first cross country tour and sharing the stage with friends and musical heavyweights alike including Providence bands Deer Tick, The Low Anthem and The Devil Makes Three.
