Letters Bring the Outside In Exercise is easy in the summer, if only because most of it doesn’t seem like exercise. Swimming in the ocean isn’t swimming laps, it’s going to the beach. Taking an evening run isn’t a burden, it’s an opportunity to enjoy the scenery and the weather. The same goes for hiking, playing tennis, rock climbing. They’re all a great way to spend a summer day. Then the weather changes. And all of a sudden all the leisurely ways you were sneaking in exercise are no longer options until May

A New Hub For Music in Wakefield South County’s echo chamber of unforgettable music finds itself with a new addition: PM Recording Studio, located in Wakefield. Founded by musical talents Matt Wunsch and Chris Vachon (guitarist for Roomful of Blues), this studio does more than merely offer an opportunity to bust out slick rhythms in a professional recording environment – it’s a burgeoning hub for South County’s music community. “I’ve known Chris for a while, him playing in Roomful and me being in a few bands,” says Matt Wunsch, adding that the studio is “open to pretty much anyone, amateurs to professionals. But I’d like to see some more collaboration stuff. You know, come in, see what we have, learn from each other. We want to meet and – I don’t want to say network, that’s overused, but you get it. It’s a community thing.” Long before the studio’s current iteration, though, it went by the name of Boo Recording Studio, and Matt worked as the studio’s go-to drummer. Sometime around 2007, Matt took over the studio with Pete Vendettuoli (guitarist for Forever Young), who in 2011 moved elsewhere to pursue other musical goals. “I was running [the studio] fine alone, but having Chris come in made me want to focus on it more on a full-time basis,” says Matt. “He actually approached me about a year ago and had some equipment that he wasn’t using all that much. We got together, hammered stuff out and it was a blessing for me, what he had for equipment and experience. We redid the whole studio. Changed it around, painted it, brought in the gear – he inspired me to take the place to a more professional level.” In addition to providing free, personalized pre-production setups for each client, PM Recording Studio also offers guitar, bass, drum and piano lessons. (“For other things, we’re happy to point people in the right direction.”) And with such a wealth

Snowy Owls Return for the Winter, and Ruffle Feathers

One of my favorite things I’ve had the pleasure of looking forward to these last couple of years as winter rears her icy head is the ability to see Snowy Owls on some area beaches, such as Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge in Charlestown or along the bluffs on Block Island. Sometimes you can see one of these gorgeous owls as you casually walk down the sandy shores or as you scan some rocky outcrops during a birding outing. As of late, there has been some controversy over these birds since they have taken up residence on tarmacs. You may be asking why an owl is out during the daytime. Unlike some other owls that are nocturnal, Snowy Owls are diurnal, meaning that they hunt both during the day and at night. There are reports that planes have been struck by this overwintering
species in New York and New Jersey. Their solution, shoot to kill. It’s no surprise that this has created quite a controversy. On the one hand there is a genuine safety concern – especially since some birds have been sucked into the turbines and caused emergency landings. On the other hand, this species is protected under federal law, are just darn gorgeous to look at and are a fantastic ambassador of wildlife to the public. Logan International Airport in Boston has a thoughtful solution. They work with the Audubon Society to capture the owls and then release them in appropriate areas away from the airport. It often takes public outcry to resolve a situation. Just another reminder to speak up for what you believe in and to give a hoot (pun absolutely intended). www.asri.org –Grace Lentini

inter 2014 is looking to be a wonderland for those who like their cold-weather sports: they’re making snow like crazy down at Yawgoo Valley, there’s pond-hockey games breaking out from Westerly to Woonsocket, and folks are strapping on snowshoes down in Arcadia and crosscountry skis up in Lincoln. But baby, it’s cold outside, so apart from a few diehards playing pickup football on the frozen tundra on Sunday mornings, most of our favorite sports have moved inside until the spring thaw. Just a few years ago, there was neither a major indoor sports center or even an ice arena south of Warwick, but the addition of the Boss Ice Arena at URI and the more recent opening of the Wide World of Indoor Sports in North Kingstown have given South County residents a lot more winter play options — regardless of the weather outside. If you want to stay active this winter, take your gear out of hibernation and get ready to work up a sweat!
[ Rock climbing ] Looking for a late-night workout that will challenge your fitness — mental and physical — from head to toe?
Rock Spot in Peace Dale offers indoor rock climbing seven days a week from 10am to midnight, with climbers of all

ever-changing routes to the top of the towering climbing walls. Newbies can start with the ten auto-belay stations before moving up to the 35 top-rope paths and eventually learning to lead climb (without the added safety of a top rope). Routes range from beginner to advanced, with challenges and obstacles that include slabs, steep faces and overhangs. A trio of bouldering areas is also available.
[ ice Skating & ice Hockey] Strap on your skates for some cool indoor fun at URI’s Boss Arena, which not only has the best ice surface in the state but also offers a variety of public skating programs at minimal cost. If you’re just learning or want a fun family outing, public skating is available almost every day of the week, and you can rent skates if you don’t have your own. There’s also pickup hockey every weekday afternoon: for the bargain rate of just $6 you’ll get almost two hours of playing time, usually with a couple of goalies and 15-20 skaters. Open figure skating and adult-only skating are offered on weekday mornings.

In east greenwich, Absolute Fitness has a 60-foot-long saltwater pool that’s heated to 87 degrees and is used for water fitness, lane swimming and learn-to-swim classes. And after a workout there’s no better way to ease your sore muscles than a dip in the gym’s whirlpool spa.
[ SocceR ] Unlike some indoor sports facilities converted from old warehouses, the Wide World of Indoor Sports at Quonset Point in North Kingstown was built from the ground up to accommodate a variety of team sports. The spacious, high-ceilinged building is perhaps best suited for soccer: both 10-on-10 and 7-on-7 leagues are offered for a range of ages, genders and abilities, with the bigger games played on a regulationsized field. The ample dimensions mean no boards or walls to crash into, and the professional-grade surface is reasonably soft and forgiving. Several groups also organize pickup hockey with contracted ice time in the evenings, such as hockey Night in Kingston (hNIK), run by former URI club hockey player John Matuszek. “I have been doing year round for three nights a week for 11 years now, and there have been over 100 guys playing over those years,” says Matuszek. “It’s a great alternative for guys who want a good, clean fast night of hockey without risk of being injured, as I do not allow any rough play. Most of the guys use this skate as a form of great exercise, especially for guys like me that don’t like going to a gym.” Some hNIK players come from as far away as Connecticut and Massachusetts to skate. “The rink is first class and is by far the

The South County YMCA in Peace Dale and the West Bay Y in North Kingstown offer swimming daily in their heated indoor pools (the South County pool is the larger of the two, at 25 meters) as well as a wide range of swim classes (members only). URI’s Tootell Aquatic Center is open to the public for community swim programs on weekday afternoons and evenings as well as weekend afternoons; a day pass is $5, and a variety of individual, family, senior and extended family
[ baSeball ] It’s a little tough to pull off a full-squad indoor baseball game in South County, but Wide World of Indoor Sports in North Kingstown has a 200x90-foot field complete with painted lines, batter’s boxes and bases that can be used for softball or ragball games. League play is also available throughout the winter. You can also work on your batting and pitching skills at Bomb Squad Baseball in South Kingstown, which boasts eight batting cages with 24-foot-high ceilings. In addition to a variety of pitching machines, Bomb Squad offers the opportunity to hit off of live pitching. hurlers can work
Your local YMCA or your town recreation department are your best bets if you want to shoot some hoops. The North Kingstown Rec Department, for example, has men’s 35-and-over and 50-and-over basketball leagues ($50 registration fee) that run from October to March on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights. The Charlestown Rec Department also hosts adult pickup basketball on Sunday and Thursday nights at the Charlestown elementary School gym; there’s no fee, but you’ll have to be a town resident to play. The South County YMCA also has family basketball time four days a week that’s open to all ages (members only), and South Kingstown’s Neighborhood Guild has a men’s winter basketball league, $1 drop-in women’s recreational basketball on Monday nights, and $2 over-35 pickup basketball on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
[ Racquetball & SquaSH ] Racquetball and squash were once all the rage in indoor sports, fixtures at almost any high-end fitness club. If these sports have become a little passé, it has nothing to do with fitness: both provide an excellent aerobic workout. In South County, these fast-paced racquet sports are available at the River Bend Athletic Club in Peace Dale, which still has one racquetball court and one squash court for members’ use.

[ biking ] You’ll find some diehard bikers out on the roads even in the dead of winter, but if you want to avoid black ice and the risk of frostbite, NBX Bikes in Narragansett is offering yoga, fitness and wind-trainer classes for bikers at Busy Body Studios in Wakefield while awaiting the grand opening of The Studio at NBX, its planned on-site training facility. All classes are led by world champion triathlete Amy Rice. The windtrainer classes are the most targeting to cycling: bikes are attached to a stationary mount that can be adjusted for varying degrees of resistance. “It’s a good alternative to spin class because you’re on your own bike and getting a sustained workout, plus we do some isolated leg drills and get off the bike for core work,” says Rice. Classes are $20, plus rental of the wind trainer for those who don’t have their own. You also can tone your biking muscles with a spin class at Luxe Fitness in Westerly and Wakefield, which offer a 45-minute Spin express class that cyclists will love.

The Dabrowskis incorporated the natural beauty of their surroundings in their eco-friendly home
Let the Sunshine In When Bob and Connie Dobrowski first looked at land in Wakefield in 1980, they were looking for more than just a buildable lot, ample acreage and bucolic surroundings. The two were in search of elevation; a place where they could build one of the first passive solar homes in Rhode Island. They found the ideal location in Wakefield’s Green Hill area, where a developer had carved out ten lots for building, eight of which were still available. Joined by an architect from Connecticut familiar with passive solar construction, the Dobrowskis secured an ideal piece of land. They held on to the lot until they broke ground in 1988. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, passive solar design takes advantage of a building’s site, climate and materials to minimize energy use. Specifically, “a well-designed passive solar

home first reduces heating and cooling loads through energy-efficiency strategies and then meets those reduced loads in whole or part with solar energy.” In their case, optimal exposure was the Dobrowskis’ chief energy-efficiency strategy. “Some lots had eight and ten acres, but they’re wetland. We chose the highest elevated for the sun… and the lot we chose gave us that exposure,” explains Bob. “The home was to have lots of windows to capture the sun in the winter to heat, and deflect the sun to keep it cool in the summer… It’s not that complicated.” Simply put, the ample windows collect heat as the sun shines through south-facing windows, which allows for maximum solar access. So when creating a floor plan for the three bedroom, two and a half bathroom home with nearly 3,900 sq. ft. of living space, solar access was
critical to keep in mind. “The layout was [based] on the flow of the sun,” says Bob. “The kitchen faces east, so the sun is popping up as you enjoy your breakfast, and our bedroom is on top of that, so you wake up to the sun… In the evening, the sun sets in the living room, at the opposite edge of the house.” When building the home, Bob adopted the role of general contractor, which was an adventurous undertaking, but one he was ready to embrace. “I’m the kind of person that likes to take on challenges, so I got three bids on every project except the framing.” The home has an open ambiance, due in large part to high ceilings and seemingly surrounding views of nature. “When you go above 16-feet, you have to have special support. We have beams specifically laminated together to support the second
floor. We wanted an open house with a lot of windows and glass because we’re on three acres. We’re very fortunate; we see deer and birds and woodchucks, you name it,” he says, adding that all kinds of animals can be seen just about every time you simply glance out the windows. “I think I remember counting 39 windows, three sets of sliding patio doors and a wood front double door with leaded glass.” Many of the windows are open during the warmer months, when at night, Bob says they can hear the ocean, less than a mile away. With an energy-efficient ethos, the couple had a reuse plan for fieldstone dug up while crews began clearing the land: a fireplace. The Dobrowskis turned to Sonny Brown of Brown Stone Masonry in nearby Charlestown, a renowned mason and Narragansett Indian whose family has been in the

business for generations. The floorto-ceiling fireplace is the indisputable focal point in the living space; one of three fireplaces throughout the home. Perhaps the most unconventional space in the home is Connie’s flower room. “It was supposed to be a heat collection room, but my wife saw the opportunity to be a botanist and she turned it into a flower room. There’s a cactus that’s eight-feet tall, a Christmas cactus eight-feet wide; flowers grow extremely well in there.” Connie’s love of growing and the color wheel
of nature is reflected in the hues that adorn the walls throughout the home, with warm shades of green, yellow and cream throughout. “Pastels would best describe our colors. We wanted to keep it light and airy; to bring the outside in,” says Bob. “I told Connie I’d be the painter, and she’d be the picker.” Bob explains that because they chose high-quality components throughout the home, very few things, like the nearly 40 windows, have needed replacing. The only area the Dobrowskis felt the need to upgrade
is the kitchen, so two years ago they refaced the space with new flooring, new cabinets, new granite and top of the line appliances including a Wolf induction cook top. With the induction cooking method, no heat is wasted because energy is supplied directly to the cooking vessel, making the process 90-95% energy efficient. “I just pay the bills,” jests Bob. “She picks it out.” The couple has also taken great care outside of the home. A three car garage, though generous in space, is tucked neatly on the side of the home
on the lowest point of the land so that it stays out of view. A sprawling lawn and pristine landscaping, even in the winter months, shows the couple have much pride in their grounds. “Our woods look like a state park, with no leaves and no branches on the ground,” says Bob. “We appreciate the property; we know we have something special.”

We all have our
morning rituals. Mine involves hitting the snooze button as many times as possible, groggily showering, getting dressed, then finally making a cup of coffee to sip while scrambling to make it out the door on time (which I never, ever do). It may be a first world struggle, but it’s a struggle just the same. I probably don’t need to say this, but I’m a beauty junkie. So when Stephanie Additon introduced me to her coffee-infused skincare line, Java, I was excited. I wasn’t, though, expecting the kind of kickstart my mornings were about to get. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Stephanie owns Updike’s Newtowne Coffee Roasting Company with her husband, Mark. Her new project, Java Skin Care, is the perfect marriage of the couple’s passions. Mark is master roaster at Updike’s, which is known for its artisan roasted beans. Before opening the shop, Stephanie worked in the corporate world. “I saw women dropping hundreds of dollars on jars of La Mer, which uses the same green coffee extracts we use,” she says. “I thought, I could do that.” For Java, she uses the beans from a fair trade, bird friendly farm in Guatemala (which means that both the growers and the animals whose natural habitats are affected are treated well). Right now, Java offers four products: a body wash, bar soap, body scrub and a body serum. All four include green coffee extract, which has more antioxidant power than açai, green tea or blueberries. They’re also free of synthetic chemicals, and brewed by a leading natural organic formulator. When we met, Stephanie gave me a mini demo. I was impressed with the body serum, which is an argan oilbased moisturizer. I rubbed it into my hands, expecting a greasy residue, but it immediately sunk in and left my dry winter hands soothed, even after washing them. The real test, though, was in the morning, at home. I woke up like usual, which means I woke up as groggy and grumpy as possible (but feeling like the day might have hope after I managed to hit snooze a record low of twice), and stumbled into the shower. I poured the body wash into

my loofah, eyes half closed, and started my ablutions. The smell wasn’t what I was expecting from normal shower gel – which is to say, it smelled mild, genderneutral and very pleasant. I loved how it wasn’t creamy but still moisturizing. Then, onto the coffee bean scrub, made from large pieces of roasted beans. That’s when it hit me. The smell of freshly roasted coffee. You know how you start to feel more awake even before you take the first sip of your morning? That happened to me in the shower, a full 20 minutes before I’d have any contact with a real mug of joe. The effect was immediately invigorating. When I got out of the shower, I used the body serum all over, in place of my moisturizer. It sunk in faster and magically locked in moisture all day, even with the harsh winter air. Maybe it was magic, but maybe it was that early jolt of caffeine that got me out of the house on time that morning. In the car, I found myself singing to the radio, feeling 2pm awake at 9am. Wickford Village has long been known for its quaint, charming atmosphere. Just step onto Brown Street during any given season and you’ll instantly be swept away by its warmth and charm. As I strolled into the Village Faire overlooking the peaceful Wickford Harbor, I immediately sensed the vast depth of positive energy flowing throughout the store. This unique storefront opened in the summer of 2012 and is home to a community cooperative of over 25 local artists and artisans offering pottery, antiques, jewelry, apparel and footwear, cards and prints, fine art and much more. Though the entire store consists of less than 800 square feet, the space is openly vibrant and uncluttered. The first selections that caught my attention were the radiant sun catchers, handcrafted barrettes and picture frames made by Robin Johanson of Sea Star Glassworks. She makes each piece from sea glass she finds on local beaches and they work beautifully with the shimmering bracelets and earrings designed by Jessica Shaffer of Blue Sea Jewels. As I gazed at the keen presentations of sparkling jewelry and fresh home good finds that were displayed amongst the dusty teal washed walls and planked flooring, I was drawn to an amazing collection of hand-carved, hand-painted birds in a nature shadow box forum. The artist, Carol Schmedinghoff, a florist by trade, has created these one-of-a-kind displays that literally took my breath away. Diana Christie, one of the creative founders of Village Faire exudes the fire and passion that has been the strong foundation of this shop, “We consider the Village Faire a ‘face and a place’ for small creatives. Our strong focus on the arts and our community allow us to offer affordable prices and an incredible assortment of inventory because we share the space, expenses and shop coverage.” This business incubator model has allowed artisans, many who have studios in The Mill at Shady Lea, to feed their muse and create their pieces

without the pressure of being a single-owner retail shop. Christie and co-op member Lynn Krim, owner of the Shady Lea Mill, took their vision of having a store front venue in gorgeous Wickford to its current fruition where shoppers enjoy engaging with Village Faire members as they set up shop outside on the expansive store front deck and share their creative gifts and talents with the folks visiting Wickford Village. Expect to hear soulful music and experience handson demonstrations as well as have your kids partake in “make-it and take-it” children’s activities held during special times of the year. The wares for sale are easy to browse because of how artfully organized each section of the shop is. I found some functional yet very cool pieces of pottery from Shady Lea Pottery Studios that will work in traditional or trendy home décor. Nearby I am wowed by one of the most intriguing art forms I’ve ever seen, Buddha Boards. These magical boards are based on the Zen concept of living in the moment. You simply paint on the surface with water and your creation comes to life. Cathy Marcotte from Space to Be, located in The Mill at Shady Lea, offers these, spiritual books and uplifting music
CDs here as well. Time stands still in one quiet corner of the store where I loved tinkering through Suzanne Christie’s 50 year’s worth of antique and vintage finds that are also very popular among the many male shoppers who have accompanied their playful wives. One draw that had the attention of many was a large basket of shiny stones adhered with an insightful message. If you like rocks, symbols and have an open mind, you will enjoy this interesting discovery shared by Litsong Lu from Taiwan – a perfect way to get some insight into the new year ahead. As we welcome a brand new year, The Village Faire is a great place to spend some time shopping with good friends, or simply a place you can get lost in all by yourself. The relaxed, comfortable space will help you find some inspiration to liven up your post-holiday décor as well as decorate your spirit with.

Brenda Trillo opened Jazzy, a designer resale boutique in North Kingstown, 17 years ago. She has seen trends come and go but her loyal customers have remained. A hidden gem on Post Road, Jazzy offers upscale designer bags, shoes and apparel. What inspired you to open Jazzy? I have always been interested in fashion. When Johnson & Wales University first began their Fashion Merchandising program, they hired me to be fashion coordinator. I thought it would be even better to open a boutique that offered high-end items at a greater value to customers. At the time, consignment boutiques were not yet in vogue.

What is the big trend this year? Designer handbags have always been in fashion. My customers are always looking for spectacular designer bags. Skinny jeans and long sweaters are also very popular now. What designers do you carry? Of course, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel and Versace. But I also have customers looking for Lilly Pulitzer, Ralph Lauren, Tory Burch and Michael Kors for more of the preppy look. What is the most unique item that you’ve consigned? It is so hard to pinpoint one item,
since we have had so many. But I think the green evening gown with ostrich feathers was probably the most extraordinary. How has Jazzy evolved over the years? We keep up with the trends as they come and go and always still have classic items. I also just opened an adjacent store called Backroom Jazzy. This is an opportunity to sell the great items we receive at a bigger discount and offer our customers some really great deals. It seems like you’ve become quite a fashion coordinator. I know what my clients are looking for. Many of them have been coming here since I opened 17 years ago. They stop in frequently and I can direct them to items I know they will love. I really get to know their style and can dress them from head to toe. What can women expect at Jazzy? We know that women are shopping for everything from eveningwear to work and everyday looks. You can buy an elegant fur, an evening gown or a look for work. With bags, shoes and accessories, we can complete every outfit. If I was going to splurge on one item, what would you recommend? I would say a really nice designer bag, either a Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors,
Coach, Gucci. I think it makes a statement. It accents anything you might be wearing. If you have a nice designer bag, you can have jeans or a ball gown on and you’ll look fabulous. What are some basics everyone should have in their wardrobe? I think everyone should have a luxurious and fabulous fur coat or jacket, especially with the cold winter. I carry mink, raccoon, fox, etc. You have the option to come here and select a high fashion fur or faux fur coat. They are reasonably priced and almost new. Is there anything versatile enough to wear from season to season? I would say a nice pair of designer boots because you can wear them in the summer and winter and they always look good with a great pair of jeans. Most people like a neutral color, but stand out colors are very in right now and worn year around. Orange is the new beige. So a beautiful orange goes with any palette.

Simply Devine Some reviews are easier
than others. Rasa on Main Street in East Greenwich is one of those places that makes the writing easy. It’s nice when the words can come flowing out of you while you’re still in the middle of eating dinner – because the dinner is just that good. Some places I write about are good, but may not be on the tip of my tongue when someone asks me, “Where’s someplace new I should eat?” More often than that question, I’m usually asked, “Where should I go for…” pizza or Italian or seafood or, in the case of this review, Indian cuisine. For the last several years my answer to the Indian question has always been Rasoi in Pawtucket. Now I can split that answer with Rasa, which, not-so-coincidentally, is sister restaurant to Rasoi as well as Kabob and Curry in Providence. Rasa seems to be trying a little harder than its sibling restaurants, but then, it is brand new and East Greenwich has been a bit of a tough nut for new restaurants to crack. Let’s get right to it, because you can tell you’re heading into an Indian restaurant almost before you’re in it. The smell of spices wafts out the door onto Main Street, and what a

wonderful fragrance it is. Clearly visible from the street with it’s blue and orange exterior, that color scheme continues inside with some blue ornately painted walls and wall hangings dyed in shades of orange. There’s also a very modern looking bar with a lot of mirrors and the sadly obligatory (for some places) television. On the plus side, on a recent night we were there the TV was acting as the music player for the restaurant instead of showing some endless news or sports programming. The service is very friendly and soon after sitting water glasses are filled and you’re given what seemed to be a dosa in the form of a cracker with two condiments: a red pepper relish with a good spicy kick, and a sweeter tamarind sauce. Try them together on the cracker, you won’t be disappointed. While my wife and I quickly polished off that treat we ordered a Red Berry Martini ($10) for her and a Tamarind Margarita ($10) for me. Rasa has a number of interesting cocktails, beers and other assorted non-alcoholic beverages, most with a very Indian edge. My wife loved her Red Berry Martini while for me it was a touch on the
sweet side, and I very much enjoyed the Tamarind Margarita. I’ll be honest, I ordered the margarita thinking it could be overpowering but I wanted to give it a try. It was very wellbalanced and great with the food.
For food we ordered the Paneer and Veg Skewer ($7.50) and Onion Bhaji ($5.50) to start. The Onion Bhaji, a golden fried fritter with a chickpea batter, was perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. They were great little bites of onion and chickpea. The Paneer and Veg Skewer wasn’t actually served as a skewer but was laid out on a long plate with a couple of tasty sauces, again one spicy and one sweet, on either side of the mild Indian cheese. There were pieces of bell pepper in between the Paneer slices for color and a small salad on one end of the plate. Both were very good vegetarian dishes that also happened to be gluten-free. The menu at Rasa includes many gluten-free options. For dinner we had the Chicken Tikka Masala ($15.99) and Lamb Curry ($17.99) along with some Garlic and Cilantro Nan ($3.50). The portion sizes were very generous, and served with the accompanying Basmati rice separate from the meat and sauces, so that dishes could be easily shared. The Tikka Masala sauce

with the roasted chicken is tomato and cream based. It’s a nicely light sauce, with some great spice and fenugreek flavor to it. The Curry with the lamb was also tomato-based with potatoes in the dish. The lamb had even more of a flavorful spice to it with cardamom and anise coming through. The lamb was well cooked and very tender. As simple as it may be, the nan may have been the most perfect dish at the table. The bread itself was delicious and it was loaded with so much garlic and cilantro that you might think it was overpowering in looking at it, but it was a great balance of flavors. We could have easily gone through more nan, and
will definitely try some of the other kinds next time. There will be that next time. Some places I review, I don’t see again, but Rasa’s not one of those. My wife made sure to grab a take-out menu on the way out and I’ve already told a few people before this review had even been written, if you want great Indian food, there’s now another place around.

At one time she had some serious health issues including severe asthma, ulcerative colitis, shingles and lung infections. After an overhaul of eating habits and lifestyle changes she is now happy and healthy, running a lifestyle program called bnourished, and she’s shared some of her advice here.

What is bnourished? bnourished is a program that I run to help people make positive, healthy changes in their lifestyles, starting with the food they eat. I try to have a deep understanding of each of my clients because the program can vary so much depending on the nature of the person, their current health, diet and happiness. Everyone is striving for nourishment and a lot of people today try to find it through convenience and junk food rather than cultivating nourishing rituals, such as tea. I tell all of my clients to have tea at least once a day, because it forces you to sit down among your busy schedule and just be peaceful for at least a few minutes with a cup of tea. Not many people realize how much of a difference that can make in your mood. By the time people come to me they are done, and they are suffering. They’ve probably tried all of the easy-ways-out and every get-healthyquick scheme, but the truth is that no prepackaged food or diet pill can even substitute a healthy lifestyle. I try to get my clients actively engaged. What are some of your inspirations for helping others? So many people are ready to accept a low level of health. I have people who come in and will tell me that they just need a little tweaking, but they’re on six daily medications. I cured myself of disease through eating well, and I was just amazed at those results. At the time, a friend of mine owned an acupuncture clinic, and I found myself just oozing with envy, which I soon realized was because I wanted to help people heal, and it became so clear that I could do that through food.

If you had to prepare a healthy meal for yourself in 15 minutes, what would you make? Salads are a great meal, especially when time is limited, because you can add almost anything to it, and you’re starting with fresh greens, which are very important to good health. I would make a simple dressing, whatever greens I have on hand, and maybe some ginger and some legumes such as peas. It really is that simple to make a healthy meal.
always had about the food you cook? Absolutely. I believe that mother nature knows what she’s doing, and my job is to get out of the way. So much flavor and nutrition comes from vegetables picked fresh and left as close to that state as possible. I like to think of food in the same way that Michelangelo thought about sculptures. He would always say that the sculpture was already within the block of marble, and all he was doing was trimming off the excess to reveal the beauty within.
Do you advocate the use of locally grown food in your clients’ diets? Of course. I introduce my clients to Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and I often take them on field trips to farmer’s markets to shop for fresh vegetables. Casey Farm is right down the street from here, and every year they hold a festival called Tomato Day, which is just a celebration of the many varieties of heirloom tomatoes. Every year I participate in that by demonstrating a raw vegan recipe at the festival. Local food is as fresh and nutritious as it gets.
What is one simple tip that you can give our readers to improve their diet? I think a good first step is greens. Eat lots of greens, and a variety of different ones. Pretty soon, your body will feel the changes that nutrient-rich foods make on your health and you’ll start craving more healthy food instead of junk food. It’s amazing that it works, but it really does. I’m always amazed by people’s abilities to make a complete lifestyle change and become healthy and happy.
I’ve read through the recipes on your website and found that they all focus on simplicity and letting the flavors of ingredients speak for themselves. Is that a philosophy that you’ve

Sun WineFest at Mohegan Sun offers tastes of hundreds of wines

PIZZA UNDER FIRE North Kingstown has never been known for its pizza, but Bravo WoodFired Pizza is hoping to change that after taking over the long vacated space of the old Tim Horton’s.
Bravo has been a staple this summer of sumptuous wood-fired pizza at many of the farmer’s markets throughout the state. Gregg O’Neill’s pizza oven trailers have established a following, and interest grew so strong, the next logical step was to open a brick and mortar restaurant. The wood-fired brick oven heats up to an astonishing 800-900 degrees and turns out perfectly cooked pizzas in about two minutes. The traditional Neapolitan crust is crisp on the outside and light and tender on the inside. Bravo makes its own dough using the finest Italian flour and makes its tomato sauce from imported Italian tomatoes. As much as possible, Bravo tries to support local farms and food artisans. All of the mozzarella cheese comes from Narragansett Creamery, a local company that gets all of its milk from Rhode Island dairies. Bravo’s menu includes a plethora of pizza toppings and a selection of house pizzas. The Parma Pizza is topped with prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, baby arugula and olive oil. The Sheldon Pizza is topped with pepperoni, mushrooms, sausage and fresh mozzarella. In addition to pizza, Bravo has a make your own pasta dish option and fresh salads to complement your dinner. The restaurant serves beer and wine in addition to an assortment of non-alcoholic beverages.
If you’re still hungry for dessert, local gelato and Pizzelle cookies are available. Bravo is open Monday-Thursday 11-8 and Friday-Saturday 11-9. Sometimes, the things we associate most closely with beauty have pretty ugly origins, particularly when it comes to jewelry. Mining – whether for coal or precious metals – is a dangerous, dirty business even under the best of conditions. At its worst, the trade in diamonds, silver and gold can involve war, economic exploitation and environmental devastation. However, as the campaign against socalled “conflict diamonds” and the Fair Trade movement surrounding exports of coffee, cocoa and other commodities have shown, good people can have a profound impact on the sustainability and equity of products produced in underdeveloped parts of the world. For Westerly-based jewelry designer Dora Szekely, pride of craftsmanship is intimately entwined with the knowledge that her materials are mindfully sourced. She is one of a relative handful of jewelers who uses only recycled silver with plans to solely source from the output from the few Fairtrade gold mines worldwide. It’s not an easy choice for a smallscale artisan who’s just a year out of college: the markup on fair-trade metals is significant. But Szekely has set her sights on an even larger goal: expanding the world marketplace for Fairtrade gold and silver. Fairtrade gold has been around since 2010, whereas Fairtrade certification of silver only began in 2013. Certified mines are typically worked by artisanal and small-scale miners who may pan for gold or extract ore from existing mines that were considered played out by previous owners. Sales take place as directly as possible between producers and customer, and mines need to have environmental and worker protections in place in order to be certified. “I’m a small-time Rhode Island girl with really big dreams,” Szekely says with a smile, but she is no dewy-eyed naif. At 25, and with a degree in global studies from Providence College, she has traveled more extensively than some people twice her age, including

stints in her mother’s native Italy and her father’s homeland of Hungary. Her next planned journey is to Colombia and Peru – not to see Machu Picchu or cavort with llamas, but to visit “Oro Verde” (Green Gold) mines and advocate for establishment of more. A child of artists, Szekely got her start in jewelry making by playing with leftover strands of silver wire from a student’s jewelry kit while her mother, Maria Scaglione, was pursuing her master’s degree at the School of Visual Arts. To this day, Szekely turns leftover scraps of silver into angular rings in her workshop – part of a diverse collection of work that includes $50 earrings and large and elaborate $500 necklaces that would feel at home around the neck of a Victorian-era dame. “I like the femininity of curves, but sharp edges, too,” she says, bemusedly recalling the concern of local silversmith and mentor Mary Ann Sherman that none of her work actually draw blood. Szekely’s Eastern European heritage is evident in the colors and
shapes she favors in her Liv & Lov designs, while her passion for environmental preservation is reflected in the necklaces and earrings that resemble bare tree branches hung with green onyx, Peruvian chalcedony and other semi-precious stones, as well as beads made from the Job’s Tears plant. The feisty Szekely prefers working with silver over more malleable gold. “Silver fights you, but I like the challenge,” she says. In a similar vein, she handpolishes her silver jewelry to a satin finish, even while admitting that it’s her least favorite part of the process. Szekely continues to sell her jewelry from space to space between Rhode Island and Philidelphia as well as online and at local shops like Eloquence in East Greenwich, even as she delves deeper into the Fair Trade movement – she was recently named a main organizer for the launch of the Fairmined as well as the Fairtradegold initiative in the U.S. “Jewelry always has a story,” says Szekely. “I think it should be a beautiful one.” www.livandlov.com and www.etsy.com/shop/LivandLov

Creative types savor the suffering of art. Something about enduring discomfort instills a sense of adventure, growth, transformation - the idea of having lived through something, and thus having at least lived. The key, though, is to properly channel this energy into a healthy, creative product. And that’s exactly what Contemporary Theater Company has done with their upcoming 9th annual 24-Hour Play Festival. Here, six teams of writers and actors meld into an indiscernible 20hour moshpit of creative madness, and at the end of it all, each team puts on a 15-minute play for the public. Without a doubt, these plays are wild and ripe with unexpected surprises, but that’s exactly the point. “The writers arrive at midnight,” says Maggie Cady, communications director of CTC. “They get props and a couple lines they have to use in the play. Then they start writing. Around 6am they stop and print out what they created. At 8pm the plays are performed. Everyone usually gets out of the building around midnight [the following day], so it does take just about the whole 24 hours.” Producing worthwhile creative work in even the best of circumstances can cause individuals to go a tad insane. In the time-constrained 24-Hour Play Festival, however, it’s liberating, as no one expects perfection from a purposefully restricted creative process. Instead, the
lack of sleep, lack of eating, lack of silence, lack of solitude - all of this lacking - creates an abundance of energy, imagination and most importantly experimentation. “Basically, I oversee all of the tech for the festival,” says Cady. “Which means I go around in the morning to all of the plays as they’re being created, and each director lets me know the props and costumes they need. Last year someone said, ‘Oh, I need a giant mouse costume and a giant teddy bear with a camera in it.’ Ooookay, I’ll do that. But later, they don’t need it. Now they need a giant TV filled with foam cubes. You never know what’s going to happen all day.” Watching the plays develop is like witnessing a tangible form of the creative process. Ideas split, get replaced, erased, become bastardized versions of themselves and then finally settle far from their original mustard seed. And all the while, Cady follows the creative trail to ensure the final products can actually be performed: “Last year, I was walking down the hallway, trying to find someone to play a sea turtle. I finally found someone and shoved them in [a team’s] room. Without any announcement, everyone shouted, ‘It’s our sea turtle!’ That was encompassing of the spirit of the day.” But costumes are only the tip of this theatrical iceberg. In fact, according to Cady, it’s not uncommon for the
audience to witness such oddities as someone eating “a whole rotisserie chicken on stage” or “a whole watermelon” while also reciting memorized lines between bites. “When you’re writing at 3am, the idea that sounds crazy and weird at the time is the idea you have to go with because it’s 3am and you only have three more hours to write. So you end up with sea turtles and giant teddy bears. You go for things that you wouldn’t go for if you had to spend two months looking at the product. And the audience definitely goes there with you. They accept the weirdness and the strange things.” Better than merely accepting, though, the audience gets to vote for their favorite play and favorite actors, making it as much about the onlooker as those on stage. With this kind of spectacle happening only once a year, it’s definitely worth seeing, if only to witness what local creatives can concoct from a day spent wallowing in their own creative suffering.
