A Different Kind of Handmade Ornament Make your own family heirlooms at a holiday glassblowing workshop Christmas tree ornaments tend to be more than just bright, shiny baubles we pull out of storage every December. Each decoration tells its own story, thanks to the memories we make around them every year. The most special of all ornaments are the ones that we and our loved ones make, but that doesn’t mean DIY tree trimming should be relegated to the popsicle stick, glitter glue and elbow macaroni department. Local glassblowers are opening their studios to let visitors take a crack at forging their own
delicate decorations. The Glass Station Studio (TheGlassStationStudio. com) in Wakefield offers ornament classes on Saturdays until December 16, and Thames Glass (ThamesGlass.com) in Newport offers workshops through their “Make Your Own” Glassblowing Experience most weekdays and some weekends (they recommend calling ahead). It all adds an extra, personal touch to a classic holiday gift. Bragging rights that yes, you know how to blow glass now, is a nice added bonus.

If you were to look at his filmography, you might assume from the work of local filmmaker Tom DeNucci that he’s more of a Halloween guy. But when Hollywood came knocking with the opportunity to work with actor Ed Asner, the director of several locally produced horror films was ready to trade spooky for Santa on his latest feature, Saving Christmas. “[They needed] to put together a Christmas movie very quickly,� Tom explains, “so they called me asking if I have any Christmas material.� He quickly turned around a script with his writing partner, Kevin DeCristofano, got notes back from the studio and in just seven days had a greenlit production to be shot on location in Rhode Island. Produced by East Greenwich’s Woodhaven Media, the movie, about two kids trying to prove that Santa is real, had Ed Asner
already attached, meaning that Tom and Kevin were able to write with Ed in mind as St. Nick. It also meant that Tom had to direct a living screen legend. “At first I was a little apprehensive about giving him direction, but then he started busting my chops,â€? Tom says. “He’s one of the funniest men alive, so I got it right away: he was there to have a good time. He made me feel comfortable by keeping things light.â€? The biggest challenge may have been making Rhode Island look like a winter wonderland‌ in April. The Cranston Fire Department worked a little movie magic of their own by spraying the Cranston Print Works with a flame-suppressing foam in place of snow. These bright remnants of the asteroid 3200 Phaethon will streak across the sky at an average of almost 120 meteors per hour, each leaving lingering dust trails decorated with a green hue in their wake. This year, a Waning Crescent Moon will rise around 3:30am, meaning that the sky will be quite dark for the entirety of the shower, making for a particularly contrast-heavy and visible show. The Observatory’s telescopes will be open and ready for viewing the night sky and distant galaxies starting at 6:30pm. When the meteors begin to quicken in frequency, the Observatory will close and visitors will then head out to the lawn for meteor viewing at the peak of the shower. Bring your blankets and chairs for comfortable – and patient – viewing while outside. After a one-day visit, Harold Hatfield knew Block Island was home. Not afraid to get his hands dirty, Harold came ready to work: while an island community loves its scallywags and characters, it mostly needs those who will roll up their sleeves in a field, dig deep into an estuary and skip the circumstance of pomp. Twenty-two years on, Harold’s wife Heather and their two young boys live a good, balanced island life. When he’s not planting bulbs or clearing dry stacked stone walls, Harold’s clamming and fishing from the shore or a small skiff. Twelve years ago, he was inspired to join the Block Island Land Trust because that good, sweet island life relies on giving back. He contributes a steady, necessary passion and refreshing common sense to the critical cause of conservation. Understanding that collectively they’re “doing God’s work,” Harold proves how amazing and productive a meeting can be when it’s held while leaning on the bed of a pickup truck, figuring how to do, not schedule. “I don’t like country music,” he says, not because of its twangy, predictable chords but because of its lyrical reliance on drama, argument, dissent and superfluous foolishness which often pervades committees and small towns. “Turtle,” as Harold is affectionately known, avoids the easy quicksand of politics and braggadocio.
He also builds an amazing Lobster Pot Christmas tree. The weekend after Thanksgiving each year, he stacks 175 lobster traps loaned by island fisherman Jon Grant in the center of Water Street’s Estas Park as the town’s holiday centerpiece. Wrapped with lights and spotted with colored, patterned buoys, its star is visible for miles. “The island’s pre-school children set up a hot chocolate and cookie stand to raise money while it’s being assembled,” says Molly McQueeny O’Neill of the Chamber of Commerce. Fifty percent of all monies raised go to maintenance of the town-owned park, with the remainder donated to the Block Island School Friends. This “really helps soften” the many expenses from island students visiting and competing with mainland sports teams, Harold says. True to his heart, Harold avoids any official tree lighting because, in his words, “I don’t want to take anything away from the Christmas tree.” After the holidays, traps are hauled away and rebuilt for another lobstering season while Harold continues caring for gardens and futures. Heading north past Clay Head on the last night boat, visitors will wipe circles on cold, steamy windows, squinting for the last reds and greens from the Lobster Trap Christmas Tree, Harold Hatfield’s annual gift to the island he calls home. –Todd Corayer

In turning blank walls into an illustrated history of Westerly-Pawcatuck, Bricks and Murals has raised the bar for public art in Southern Rhode Island Words and photography by Tony Pacitti

September, after two years of planning, countless volunteer hours and over 170 quarts of donated paint, the Bricks and Murals (BricksAndMurals.org) project in Westerly-Pawcatuck finally culminated in a five-day celebration of community and public art. International mural and sign painting collective The Walldogs created more than a dozen murals to commemorate the history of the area. Now that the scaffolding and drop cloths have been packed away, community organizers reflect on how the stunning, large-scale public art project came together.
HOW IT ALL STARTED “In January 2016 I was just elected president of the Downtown Business Association. Jean Gangier, a town councilman, and Cam Bortz, a local sign painter and Walldog, held a kind of informational meeting. Jean twisted my arm, said, ‘You’ve got to go, because we want to paint murals on the buildings in Westerly.’” Wendy Brown, Owner, The Brown Realty Group, DBA President, BAM President “When this first started and we said we were going to do murals on

For some, the murals went beyond town history and spoke directly to individuals living in the community. “The artist was painting [the Westerly Telephone Company mural] and this elderly lady is crying. He says, ‘Are you okay, ma’am?’ She says, ‘That’s my grandfather and I thought the town forgot him.’ It’s kind of a museum in the streets. People in this community are going to know who Dr. John Champlin was and that this was the first place you could make an interstate phone call in the United States.” Jean Gagnier
THE FESTIVAL From September 13-17, the Walldog artists and volunteers put up the murals. Visitors to the multi-day festival came to watch the artists at work and enjoy a downtown food stroll, block party and other events. “This is the first place on the East Coast where Bricks and Murals was done. For all of the artists, it was like meeting up for a party for four days. They all got to see each other again, which was really cool. And every day the local artists couldn’t wait to talk to the BAM artists. I think they felt very welcome here.” Mia Byrnes “It was a community coming together. When we had the celebration we had 1,500 people ride the trolley, and 70 percent were local people who hadn’t been downtown in a long time. They were very engaged, and some people told us that they fell in love with this town again.” Jean Gagnier “Talk about being proud of a community. I’m really proud of this town. We had a number of naysayers who have actually come to us and said, ‘I was wrong.’ Even people with imagination. I didn’t even know how cool it was going to be.” Wendy Brown

There will also be strolling carolers, hot chocolate and cookies, and deals at local stores that stay open late. SEE The Chorus of Westerly (ChorusOfWesterly. org) hosts two beloved annual events: the Messiah Sing on December 2, and Christmas Pops on December 16-17, a spirited holiday concert. Nearby at Granite Theatre (GraniteTheatre.com), they’re staging A Christmas Survival Guide from December 1-23, a funny show about coping with holiday stress through music, song and laughter. The Westminster Youth String Ensemble Holiday Concert (OceanChamber.org) is on December 3, with talented kids joined by adult string players and members of the Westerly Band. EAT La Vigilia, better known around here as the Feast of the Seven Fishes, is Rhode Island’s own delicious pescatarian celebration. Traditionally a Christmas Eve meal, it’s served at the Weekapaug Inn(WeekapaugInn.com) for a few weeks in December. The seven course meal doesn’t just celebrate the holiday, it celebrates the state’s most delicious natural resource. Of all the festive events this month at Ocean House (OceanHouseEvents.com), like Brunch with Santa and Gingerbread House Workshops, the most exotic is their Children’s Christmas Tea with the Mystic Aquarium Penguins on December 10, which is a tea party that offers up close and personal encounters with real penguins. Whether they’ll be wearing top hats and tiny vests like they do in Mary Poppins is TBD. PLAY A surefire way to add some charm to the coldest season is by ice skating outdoors. The Washington Trust Ice Rink (OceanCommunityYMCA.org) opens for the season when it’s cold enough – but really, we’re in no rush for that.

CELEBRATE Rhode Island’s favorite surf town goes all out on December 3 for the Narragansett Festival of Lights (NarragansettRI.gov), which is a whole day of festivities. Coming Home to the Ocean State Stacy Rastelli found that absence had made the heart grow fonder when she moved to Rhode Island with her family of four

Native Rhode Islander Stacy Rastelli spent years basking in the California sun not far from the glitterati of Hollywood. But eventually, she realized that her home state had more of a hold on her than she’d thought. “Simply put… I missed my roots!” she says. “Rhode Island is historical, culturally diverse and picturesque. You can only appreciate those things by moving away and missing everything that makes our state so unique.” Stacy, a real estate agent, and her husband John, also a real estate agent and restaurant manager who grew up on the East Coast, says that while it wasn’t an easy decision, they knew they wanted to make Rhode

to purchasing the family’s latest new construction home. “I feel like I came full circle because the very first home I owned I had custom-built over 25 years ago… just a few miles away from our current home,” she explains. The couple turned to Steven Lima of Aly Builders, who teamed up with residential and landscape developers John Studley and Michael Saccoccia of S & S LLC – all local Coventry contractors. “Collaboratively, they took the time to design and build an energy-efficient ‘smart’ home with craftsman-style architectural detail and landscape design on a wooded lot that exudes peace and tranquility,” recounts Stacy. “This is my fourth new construction and I have learned more with each project about exactly what building from the ground up entails.” The initial plans called for a traditional colonial-style home, but the couple wanted an architectural design that included lots of stone, covered porches and doors/corbels that would reflect more of a craftsman exterior. “Our builder really takes pride in his craft and worked with us to capture every architectural and mechanical detail of what

we wanted in a home, turning our vision into reality,” explains Stacy. The kitchen features white cabinetry and a neutral backsplash so that Stacy can integrate various accent colors depending upon
the change of the season or holiday. An avid cook and frequent hostess, Stacy chose commercial grade appliances throughout. John, an admitted techie, enjoys the convenience of the lighting, thermostats and garage door being controlled by his smartphone via an app. “My husband often has fun changing light colors on me while he is at work,” laughs Stacy. Outside, a farmer’s porch wraps around the home extending to the rear covered patio, while the finished walk-out basement/ theatre room/play room is a hit with the children and their friends. While the family loves the home, they equally love their tranquil surroundings in West Coventry. “Needless to say, sitting on one of our rocking chairs or Adirondack chairs after a Jacuzzi dip feels like heaven to me,” says Stacy. “It brings so much peace to my soul to unwind at the end of the day while surrounded by such natural beauty.” The Ocean State is exactly where the family wants to be. “I am delighted to return to the only place I have ever truly called home,” says Stacy. “They say that home is where the heart is, so I never really left my home state because Rhode Island has always been, and will forever be, in my heart.”

Working up a sweat – and conquering fears – at Central Rock Gym
I’ve tried countless exercise disciplines and they all make big claims about their respective fitness benefits. Most of them acquit themselves admirably on that count, but fall short on a secondary but equally common claim: fun. By and large, unless you’re of a specific personality type, exercise is not fun. I love running, for example, and spend hours every week doing it, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that it’s fun. One activity that had eluded me until recently was indoor rock climbing, which I had the opportunity to try at the new Central Rock Gym in Warwick. Founded in Worcester in 2009, CRG has expanded into seven locations around Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. That’s in keeping with the growth of the sport as a whole: according to the market research firm The NPD Group, indoor rock climbing is now a $175.5 million industry – and that’s before it will be featured in the 2020 Summer Olympics. Despite growing enthusiasm worldwide, I approached indoor rock climbing with a mild but very real fear of heights to conquer on

my way up the wall. Manager and instructor Jamie Re quickly put me at ease, showcasing CRG’s expansive facility, which also includes a yoga studio and weight room, and introduced me to some of his regulars. The gym offers both top-rope climbing, in which a fellow climber keeps you safe with a rope that runs to the top of a tall wall, and bouldering, which involves shorter walls over thick pads and no ropes. Jamie’s plan was to show me the ropes (literally) by teaching me to belay, or secure the rope that prevents another climber from falling. Using a harness and carabiner, the belayer takes up the slack as the climber works toward the top and stands ready to lock the rope should the climber fall. Once the climber is ready to descend, it’s the belayer’s job to release the slack in a controlled fashion for a slow and safe landing. It’s a fairly simple process and can be learned in about a half hour, but it is quite genuinely a lifesaver. As I worked my way up the training wall

I could feel the anxiety creeping in, but managed to continue climbing. The first real test came at the top when Jamie instructed me to let go, lean back and let myself fall. On a cognitive level, I knew that the rope was secure and I could trust Jamie to keep me safe, but it took a few seconds for my limbs to get the message. My fear conquered, Jamie invited me to try a couple of the tallest walls, ascending roughly 30 feet – perhaps not that impressive for an experienced climber, but high enough to quicken my pulse. Each wall has several color-coded paths of hand- and footholds that criss-cross it, graded according to difficulty. This was when the real challenge and appeal of climbing became apparent: it’s as much a mental activity as a physical one. Your muscles are fully engaged by pushing and pulling your body up the wall using holds no bigger than the palm of your hand or the ball of your foot. At the same time, your mind is in puzzle-solving mode, trying to game out the proper route from one hold to the next. On the easier courses the holds are numerous, closer together and easy to spot. On the harder ones, it’s not uncommon to find yourself glued in place, thinking, There’s no way I can reach that next hold without losing my footing. The best part about that level of mental engagement is that it distracts you from all the hard work your body is doing. Up on the wall, a Zen-like calm took over, but back on the ground I could feel an excited energy coursing through every muscle in my body. It was challenging, invigorating and, dare I say, fun.

Rhode Island’s Top Realtor Lori Joyal, The Highest Producing Agent In The State For 2016, Is On Track For Another Year At The Top Of The Market Lila Delman Real Estate International is known far and wide as a premier brokerage house, in part because of their reputation for stellar customer service, and in part because of their team of talented and dedicated agents. One agent, though, rises above the rest. Lori Joyal, managing broker of Lila Delman’s Watch Hill office, was the top producing agent in Rhode Island in 2016, bringing in an astonishing $66.8 million in total sales volume that year. And while the 2017 numbers won’t be finalized until the end of this month, Lori is on track to top that list again this year, with an estimated $80 million in sales. “People often ask me how I do what I do at the pace I do it,” Lori says. When I get an email or a text, I answer it within an hour. It’s about delivering what you say you’re going to deliver,” she says. “That’s customer service.” She also keeps in mind the lessons her
parents gave her, and uses them every day. “I feel like my parents are in my heart and mind every moment. Do the right thing, and it will pay you back dividends in your life.” While she topped the market last year, Lori’s sales volume has been among the top three agents in the state for the past five years, and Lori has been named as one of America’s Best Real Estate Agents by REAL Trends. “There is no crystal ball in projecting market trends,” Lori says. “Stock portfolios have been increasing, and many want to put their money into a stable, tangible investment,” like a home or a second home. “Discretionary, second home buyers are looking for capital preservation and a future return on investment,” she says. “That is what real estate offers. I see the demand for our beautiful Ocean State continuing.” While it’s commonly held that Lila Delman Real Estate International only focuses on large ticket properties, much of Lori’s volume comes from modest home sales.“The reason we are the premier real estate agency in the state is because of our dedication to all customers,” she says. “All our properties receive the same level of service, regardless of price point.” That personal relationship, which often results in a friendship, is what’s most important to Lori. “The most endearing comment I got from a client was that she felt she was my only client,” she says. “That is my ultimate goal.”

One Burger to Rule Them All Uptown Burger Bar in South Kingstown does one thing, and does it very well Variety is the spice of life; there are literally hundreds of choices in the cereal aisle and enough ice cream options to take up an entire freezer section in the grocery store. Sometimes, all of those choices are overwhelming, so I found it refreshing that Uptown Burger Bar in South County Commons is making burgers and just burgers. Uptown Burger Bar opened in August, another entry in the already bustling South County Commons dining scene. The atmosphere is bright and welcoming. To me, it feels like an old-school soda fountain, but modernized with granite and sleek light fixtures. It is upscale without being uptight. One of the ways Uptown Burger Bar has modernized its business is by having a cashless/self-service ordering system that worked well. There are two iPads set up by the restaurant’s entrance where you place your order. If self-service isn’t for you, they also had a waitress taking orders from the tables, and you could also order from the bartender. The restaurant uses Swipe for a Cause to handle its credit card transactions, which
donates 5% of its profits to Hope Hospice & Palliative Care Rhode Island. Another modern touch is accepting reservations, which was important on the busy Saturday night I was there. Uptown Burger Bar prides itself on its commitment to local products and to a small and sustainable environment. Everything they serve comes from New England. The ground beef comes from Pineland Farms in Maine and is all-natural, antibiotic-free and humanely raised. The hamburger buns come from Homestead Bakery in East Providence, the soda is from Empire Soda in Bristol, and that’s just a small list of the local products they use. Also, to help minimize the restaurant’s impact on the environment, they recycle all of the cooking oil (it’s made into biofuel), their plastic cups and covers are made entirely from plants, and their cardboard containers are all compostable. We started with a round of drinks and sampled some of the great local beers on their list: a Grey Sail Great Ketch ($8), a Two Roads Roadsmary’s Baby ($5.50) and a Stony Creek Sun Juice ($5.50), while the teetotalers in our group all enjoyed their Empire Soda ($2.95).

The restaurant also offers milkshakes, house wines and sangria. Since we had five people in our group, we were able to try five different specialty burgers. We all agreed that the 5.3-ounce burger patties were just the right size – not too big, not too small. The brioche buns were fresh and substantial enough to hold all of the toppings we had piled on our burgers. We also all agreed that the meat itself was flavorful and could have stood on its own. I ordered the Fig and Onion Burger ($9.95). It was the perfect blend of flavors – sautéed onions, bacon, fig jam and gorgonzola cheese. The fig jam was sweet and played nicely with the salty bacon and the tang of the cheese. The sautéed onions added a nice texture and earthy flavor. My mother opted for the Georgia Peach Burger ($8.95) with grilled peaches, sweet peach glaze and bacon, and my father chose the Hawaiian Burger ($8.95) which topped the beef with grilled pineapple, avocado spread, teriyaki sauce and bacon. My father is a burger connoisseur and he thought the grilled pineapple gave it a great flavor. My brother

Our family friend tried the Vermont Maple Bacon & Cheese Burger ($8.95) with bacon, maple bacon jam and cheddar cheese. She raved over the bacon jam. As far as side dishes go, Uptown Burger Bar offers a choice of Seasoned Tater Tots ($3.95), Hand Made Fries ($3.95), Onion Rings ($4.95) and an Uptown Salad ($7.95). Our favorite of the side dishes was the Tater Tots. They were exceptionally crisp and I could have eaten the entire serving myself. The onion rings were also tasty, crisp and flavorful. With reasonable prices, delicious food and a commitment to local suppliers and sustainability, Uptown Burger Bar proves that you don’t need to offer a wide variety of food to be successful. Next time I want a good hamburger, I’ll be back.
