OH, BUOY From dock to doorknob, sea debris reimagined No longer moored to lobster traps, Katie Snape’s buoys have drifted into the homes and hearths of coastal dwellers and landlubbers looking to infuse a little bit of the sea into their living spaces. The Rhody Drive-In Movie Craze Spend your nights social distancing with movies and concerts from your car The retro summer evening outing of watching a movie from your car is the new social distancing craze all over Rhode Island. Classic spots have reopened this season to carry on the tradition, while other organizations have fashioned drive-ins in their own backyards and lots to make sure movie-lovers can still come together while staying apart. With fall weather creeping in, nothing beats cozying up in a car to watch a campy flick on the big screen.

BEYOND CAMPUS To go or not to go, that is the question. From nursery schools to colleges and universities, communities are trying to come together to make the right decisions for both public health and the economy.
How URI and South County are preparing for a new kind of semester By Ann M. Martini
South County is grappling not only with public schools but also with the reopening of its institute of higher education and hub of social activity, the University of Rhode Island. The region enjoys a flip-the-switch economy – as soon as the tourists depart on Labor Day, the students descend and stay until tourism starts up again. It’s created a unique economic model that is great for year-round stability of bars and restaurants, supermarkets and liquor stores, summer-home owners who can rent their properties to students during the school year, and so on. “Not only will a decrease in the student body have an impact locally,” says Louise Bishop, President and CEO of South County Tourism. “URI brings in a lot of sports-related and group business that pay for hotel rooms and meals. So tax revenue to the community will be reduced. In this situation, one issue leads to the next.” URI boasts a student body of almost 20,000, and according to Vice President of Student Affairs, Kathy Collins, Ph.D., received more applications this year than ever before. But how will the presence of COVID-19 impact this clustered community? What if the pandemic keeps students away who choose to commute back to Coventry or Providence or stay in Warwick taking classes online? How will having more students living off campus impact the university, the local economy, and public safety? Photos courtesy of the University of Rhode Island
URI has a comprehensive plan in place to, hopefully, prevent any kind of negative impacts beyond its bounds. According to Collins, dorm capacity has been reduced to 4,600 from 6,000 and each resident student will be tested before move-in day. Classroom capacity is being reduced so that each student has 36-square feet of space. More classes are being offered in online or hybrid format. Dining halls will be take-andgo, masks will be required, sanitizing will be constant, and so on. There will be a new rule book, literally, and penalties will be assessed by Campus Police on students who break the rules by, say, throwing a frat party, according to Collins. But the country has witnessed collegiates flagrantly ignore social distancing rules on beaches and elsewhere, so controlling the behavior of 18- to 21-yearolds sounds a little like herding cats.

It’s that flip-the-switch model that provides the URI student community with living arrangements that might be more beneficial than living on campus…or less, depending on how compliant they choose to be with social distancing protocol. Living in a Narragansett or South Kingstown rental for the school year might be that middle-of-the-road option that works for some students: Not commuting from home, but not living on campus. This is one segment of the local economy that is helped, not hurt, by coronavirus. “Well, there has been a lot of drama,” begins Jim Durkin, owner of Durkin Cottage Realty in Narragansett. For more than half a century, Durkin has been the go-to rental agency for URI students looking to live “down the line” (Rhody Rams-speak for “in a beach house”). Back in March, when COVID-19 shut down the campus along with the rest of the world, Durkin’s phone started ringing. Some students were headed home for the rest of the school year and parents were looking for rent refunds. Durkin was flexible. It was, after all, a global pandemic. And then, not long after the spring wave broke, the phones started ringing again – parents and students feeling like a rental was the best option for the fall semester. “I’m trying to go easier in terms of payments and requirements,” Durkin says. “But we won’t feel a negative impact from this. We are not seeing a decrease in rentals. I have maybe two availabilities as of now.” Henry Leclaire is one of those students who is opting to live down the line. A resident of Warwick, Leclaire graduated from Bishop Hendricken in May and, like every other high school senior in America, missed out on the celebration. And now, so too will his freshman year at URI look different. Leclaire and several of his friends will live in a family-owned beach house in South County instead of in the dorms. “I feel bad he’s not getting that typical college experience he hoped for, but I think it’s best this way,” says his mom, Amy Leclaire.

Peter Garafalo is skeptical. Garafalo is the general manager of the Bon Vue Inn, a bar and restaurant overlooking the beach in Narragansett that has been popular with URI students for decades. Is Garafalo concerned fewer students matriculating in the community will hurt his bottom line more than COVID-19 has already? “In the past,” he says, “we’d depend on URI students a couple of nights a week when we’d have music and dancing. But that’s not going to be possible for the foreseeable future. They’re not going to want to come here in masks and stay six feet apart. They’re looking for a party.” Instead, Garafalo adds, the Vue will continue to rely on a very loyal group of regular locals. Closer to campus, at the popular Mews Tavern in Wakefield, things are looking a little different.

“We’re definitely concerned if the student population is significantly decreased,” says business manager George McAuliffe. “But we don’t focus just on the students. From parents visiting campus to athletic and alumni events, to parents’ weekend and homecoming, cancelled or smaller events will have an impact,” he says. “What that will be, we just can’t predict.” Both Garafalo and McAuliffe suspect the influx of as many as 5,000 students into the beach house communities, coupled with the dearth of public gathering spaces, will cause serious headaches for local police forces. “They are all about the house parties,” says Garafalo, “not a bar that is at 66 percent capacity that has to close at 11pm.”

Narragansett and South Kingstown police departments have a long-standing relationship with students who live in the beach communities. Susan Hoopes, the marketing director at the upscale Belmont Market in Wakefield, thinks it’s all about adaptation and doing our part. One day in late July, Hoopes took a call from a concerned mother of a returning URI student. Her son didn’t have a car, she explained, and in semesters past would hitch rides to the supermarket with friends. She wanted to know if Belmont offered delivery options. Belmont already had some local delivery, so Hoopes decided to reach out to URI to see if the University could create a protocol whereby Belmont could deliver to dorms, despite the fact that the market was already bursting at the seams. (“It’s like the Fourth of July every day in here,” Hoopes says.) “But what are you going to do? You look for opportunities to grow and expand and help your customer base. You just have to say, ‘We’ll figure this out together.’”

The Shore Thing A Narragansett beach house makes any day feel like a vacation Lynn and Rod live outside of Boston and were looking for a family retreat to enjoy with their three grown children and grandchildren. Neighbors had been spending summers in Bonnet Shores and always spoke highly of the relaxation they felt when they were there. So, Lynn and Rod rented a house one summer and felt that same magic. “It was one of the best vacations we ever had,” says Lynn. Here’s the Rub: The Realities of Mask-Wearing Doctor Valerie Tokarz answers questions you might have about “the new acne” “Maskne” is a term that is getting some buzz these days. It’s a portmanteau coined to describe acne that is produced after wearing a face mask. Also known as acne mechanica, this unpleasant side effect has been around for quite some time for people in the medical field, but it is just now getting waves of attention due to our “new normal” of wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. Ever since masking up has taken over, more and more people are noticing breakouts around the areas where they place their masks every day. Dr. Valerie Tokarz, a board-certified dermatologist and laser specialist at Tokarz Laser and Aesthetic Dermatology, knows all about the “maskne” trend and how to tackle it. When did you first discover that “maskne” was upon us? I would say “maskne” became a thing in the last couple of months with Coronavirus, but it’s always been an issue. With any type of mask wearage, we would see some cases of breakouts due to a person’s allergic reaction to the fabric.
How can someone distinguish a “maskne” breakout from a regular breakout? “Maskne” breakouts tend to follow the pattern of the mask, such as the folds between the nose and the corners of the lip. They may also show up as a defined pattern around the elastic bands of a mask. What are the best tips to follow for those trying to avoid or currently battling this issue? Make sure your mask is clean at all times! When cleaning it, use something that doesn’t have a scent, like fragrance-free laundry detergents. If you’re wearing the mask a lot during the week, try to wash it daily. If you only wear it once a day to run a quick errand, you do not need to wash it as often. Also, if you have disposable masks, the same rules apply, but try to wear a new mask the following day. Find masks that have soft, natural fabrics. For breakouts, use over-the-counter spot treatments, benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid wash.

Are there any specific masks we should be wary of wearing? No, not specifically. But, I would favour either disposable masks or masks with soft natural fibers, such as cotton. The reason being is because synthetic materials, like neoprene, would develop allergic reactions. Wearing these kinds of masks could cause some to even break out in rashes.

A Swift Pivot Yields Sweet Success “When [the pandemic] first hit us in March, our business just stopped,” remembers Scott Chapin. “It was scary.” He and wife Juli’s business, CakeSafe, manufactures essentials for the baking industry, most famously a portable, durable acrylic container to transport cakes. However, when the weddings they relied so heavily on came to a halt, Chapin found himself refocusing on what his business could do – and turned to the overwhelming amount of plexiglass at

Plant-based crêperie doesn’t stop at baked sweets The Bonnet Shores storefront of Faits Maison boasts vegan crêpes and baked goods, but there’s more to the French crêperie than meets the eye. Owners Elise Massenet and Olivia Wilcox are both from France originally, and pull inspiration from their mothers and grandmothers to also create healthy plant-based meals available for delivery and pick-up. With weekly menus dropping every Friday, Wilcox explains, “It’s a complete dinner with a main dish, a side of green salad from a great local farmer at Chris & Kristina’s Market Garden, homemade French dressing, and a surprise treat for dessert.” Massenet and Wilcox use French flavors to reinvent classic dishes as vegan fare. Their Eggplant Parmesan is stuffed with creamy cashew “cheese,” and the Chickpea Salad Sandwiches feature fresh tomatoes, red onions, cornichons, and vegan mayo. Or, if you’re in the area, stop by for French Madeleines, Lemon Poppyseed Cookies, fruit-topped crêpes, and other delicacies. “Elise and I started Faits Maison to share healthy and nutritious meals with the community,” says Wilcox, “and making crêpes was a dream of mine for a long time!” Narragansett, FaitsMaison.com

A food truck that never travels far from the farm Moonlighting at a friend’s mobile eatery and spending time at the Block Island Farmers Market set the gears in motion for a beautiful union: a food truck right on the farm. Hence, Kelly Walsh opened Farmstead Refreshments in July at 1661 Exotic Animal Farm & Gardens. Guests can go for a socially distanced stroll while they eat, visiting the animals and touring the gardens. Says Walsh, “The locals carve out their ‘secret spots’ to get away from town for a moment and grab a quick lunch.” Along with chef and long-time friend
Ted Cunningham, Walsh shaped the menu around featuring farm-grown ingredients with a “food truck flair.” From Grilled Pimento Cheese to Polynesian Poké with sushi-grade Atlantic tuna, find a variety of styles that showcase seasonal flavors, including smoothies with rotating fruit combos. “Stir fry is a no brainer with all the fresh veggies straight from the garden,” says Walsh. Hand sanitizer may not have been the first product release head distiller Ryan Gwozdz and team had anticipated when they opened South County Distillers this past spring, but that didn’t stop them from jumping into action when COVID-19 hit. Now, you can sit back in the beer garden of their sister company, Grey Sail Brewing, and enjoy a cocktail featuring their recently launched small-batch vodka or gin. Bourbon and rye whiskey offerings are in the works, currently aging in their Westerly distillery where all spirits are made in-house using only the best ingredients. “I distilled dozens of gin recipes before landing on our final version,” says Gwozdz. “Gin is one of my favorite spirits to distill – it is limitless.
