SOWING THE SEEDS A growing support network for farmers clears a path for inclusive and sustainable practices Local farmers – and those aspiring to carve a space for themselves in the industry – gathered in late May at Wild Harmony Farm in Exeter for a potluck dinner and meet-and-greet. Farmers Ben Coerper and Rachael Slattery gave the group a tour of their certified organic and pasture-raised livestock farm and walked them through some of the sustainable and regenerative practices in place, like silvopasture, a combination of forest and pasture that allows animals to roam and forage. This was just the first of many educational evenings of the season hosted by the Young Farmer Network (YFN) of Southern New England, giving a local farm the chance to highlight what they’re doing that’s exciting or unique while building community. “The opportunity to visit farms and talk with other food producers and brainstorm solutions to the broad or specific challenges we face is the backbone of the Young Farmer Network,” says coordinator Elizabeth Malloy. “At farm tours, social events, and workshops alike, we focus not only on education but also on the cultivation of a strong social fabric.” Young Farmer Nights make up a series of inclusive, casual get-togethers at a different farm every month for anyone interested in farming, whether new or seasoned farmers or those wanting to learn about the local food system. At the recent event

Wild Harmony Farm hosted, Coerper and Slattery spoke frankly about their journey with friends and guests. “We share practices that have worked well and ones we have had to reimagine time and time again,” says Slattery. “Farming know-how used to be passed down from generation to generation, and in some cases it still is. However, for those of us utilizing different practices from generations before us or learning from scratch, the need for open and honest sharing is extraordinarily important.” Along with these more informal gatherings, YFN’s mission is to be a resource for

regional farmers of all ages, experience, and backgrounds. “We work towards a supportive landscape for farmers and prospective farmers in developing socially, ecologically, and economically sustainable farm businesses and fulfilling lives,” Malloy explains. This includes Farmer Short Courses, a series of instruction “covering everything from tractor repair, to business planning, to agriculture-related policy work,” says Malloy. Through connections made in these programs, collaborations have also formed, with members sharing booths at farmers markets and lending equipment to each other.

Forging a career in farming – especially for those traditionally excluded from land ownership or new to the processes – relies on these deeper relationships and networks. “YFN prompted other local beginning farmer organizations to coordinate regional events discussing topics such as race and equity as related to beginning farmers’ access to land and other resources, and the importance of unearthing the histories of land dispossession and slavery in New England to better understand the context of contemporary landscapes and labor issues,” shares Malloy. “Building solidarity among farmers, consumers, and justice groups will help develop resilient communities as we struggle with issues like climate

change and land security, structural racism and the economic viability of small farms,” she continues. Offering wide-ranging programs and services like childcare and translators at events throughout South County’s and southern New England’s agricultural landscape, YFN begins breaking down these barriers. “We’re grateful to the organizers and other host farms who open their gates to share the ups and downs of their farming ventures,” says Slattery. “One small tip has the potential to save hours of work a week or change a product from being a loss leader to profitable overnight. Sharing knowledge between growers and producers is of the utmost importance.”

A few years ago David O’Connor would have dismissed dog grooming as a “boujie” indulgence. This booming industry only caught his eye when a groomer posted in a neighborhood group urgently needing a space to continue her work. “I studied public community service at Providence College, so I was keen to help,” says O’Connor. “In my research I found Charlestown’s PAWS Pet Grooming was going to close after 13 years – I didn’t want their community legacy to end, so I became the new owner.” Thirty-year-old O’Connor’s dedication to running a socially conscious business kept him

I believe people are inherently generous, given the opportunity.” Not only does PAWS help clients and offer free grooming to local animal rescues, but the

the people there – so much so that now two of them walk her on a daily basis.” O’Connor’s goal is to open a series of grooming salons across Rhode Island, and he’s looking for dog-savvy partners, as well as local farmers or environmental groups interested in utilizing dog hair for composting. “I understand how much love people pour into their pets. I want to extend that love into our whole community so that we can all feel more connected.”

Will Rhode Island’s Approach on Social Equity for Marijuana Live Up to the Billing? Legislative supporters of Rhode Island’s new law legalizing marijuana say it will help people hurt by the war on drugs. But some observers question whether the law will live up to its billing in promoting social equity. By Ian Donnis

by to follow the process for becoming part of the legit marijuana business. “They’re hustling,” Ranglin-Vassell said. “They don’t have time to look at every single thing that’s happening at the Statehouse.” THE VIEW FROM THE STREET A few miles north, in Central Falls, Jason Rocha seems like a good candidate to be part of Rhode Island’s effort to address social equity in marijuana. He’s a cannabis enthusiast. “I enjoy marijuana,” Rocha said. “I believe in marijuana, marijuana has helped my life tremendously.” At the same time, Rocha said, his marijuana use has been held against him throughout his life, including when he wanted to join the military and ran into trouble with the law as a young man. “Well, everything always leads to marijuana,” he said. “So at that time if you’re riding around in your car, cop smells marijuana, that was probable cause for stop, search and seizure, just for the smell of marijuana.” Rocha spent time in prison years ago on a cocaine charge. He later co-founded an advocacy group called the Formerly Incarcerated Union of Rhode Island. He’s 42 now and runs a property

With Rhode Island becoming the 19th state to legalize marijuana, Rocha said he could grow a better product and sell it at a lower price than competitors. “I’m a grower,” he said. “This is my hobby. This is recreation for me. This is what I enjoy doing.” But Rocha said he’s not planning to seek a retail license, for lots of reasons. He’s frustrated that awarding licenses will take up to two years, and Rocha is concerned that the marijuana market could change dramatically over that time. If marijuana use is now legal, Rocha believes, he should be able to set up shop. He also said it’s hard to get information about the process and believes the deck is stacked against him, in part since if he had a retail shop, he’d be required to buy marijuana from existing cultivators. “To be honest with you, I quit,” Rocha said. “I’m just fed up, I’m disgusted, I’m disappointed.” THE COST FACTOR There’s no question the process of getting a retail license to sell cannabis will be difficult and expensive. The annual cost of a license will be $30,000.

Now that Rhode Island has legalized adult-use marijuana, plans call for the state to license 24 new retail shops in six zones around the state. One license in each zone is reserved for a worker-owned cooperative and another for a social equity applicant. A social equity applicant is defined as someone who lives in a low-income neighborhood or who has been disproportionately impacted by laws criminalizing marijuana. A fund being initially seeded with more than $1 million will defray costs for social equity applicants. During the House debate in May, state Rep. David Morales (D-Providence) praised some of these details and the agreement, also in the law, to automatically expunge by mid-2024 some past marijuana charges. “We’re taking a very thoughtful approach on this issue – one that is prioritizing equity and focusing on the harm that cannabis prohibition has disproportionately done to affect lower income people and people of color across Rhode Island,” Morales said. But some of his colleagues are more skeptical. State Rep. Marcia Ranglin-Vassell (D-Providence) lives in the Wanskuck section of Rhode Island’s capital city, where, she said, a lot of men have spent time at the ACI due to what she calls the ‘war on weed.’ Now, Ranglin-Vassell fears that those hurt by the drug war will get left behind. “It has impacted my neighbors so harshly,” she said, “and that’s why I really believe those people should get the first go at this and not rich white people mostly and corporations.” The drug war has taken a heavy toll in Rhode Island. A national report released in 2016 by the ACLU and Human Rights Watch found that Black Rhode Islanders were arrested for drug possession at almost three times the rate for whites – a higher percentage than the national average. But Ranglin-Vassell doubts the new law will be equitable for her constituents. She said many of them are too busy struggling to get

And setting up a brick-and-mortar marijuana shop could cost a few million dollars. Cannabis will be taxed at a rate of 20 percent. Marijuana remains illegal federally, so conventional bank loans are not available, and business expenses can not be deducted for taxes. These factors suggest that rich people still have a big advantage in profiting from legalization. The state’s top cannabis regulator, Matt Santacroce is optimistic that the state’s legalization approach will be a tax revenue-generator. But he said that Rep. Ranglin-Vassell is on target in asking whether those hurt by the drug war will be left behind as others cash in. “I think by and large, she’s right,” Santacroce said. “I think that this is a very difficult, very heavily regulated industry, in this state and in every state, And with that comes costs to participate, to participate compliantly.” The state’s legalization law requires social equity applicants to own at least 51 percent of a new cannabis business. That creates an opening for investors to enter the new sector with a 49 percent stake – or just less than half of the ownership – in an individual enterprise. And there are still questions about how the effort to boost social equity will work

in Rhode Island. That’s because the Cannabis Control Commission, which will create regulations and decide who gets 24 new retail cannabis licenses, won’t take shape until after Gov. Dan McKee makes three appointments in the near future. House sponsor of the cannabis bill, Rep. Scott Slater (D-Providence), says an advisory board included in the new law will advocate for social equity applicants and recommend changes if needed. A New Sound

Westerly is known for many great things: beautiful beaches, Victorian-era hotels, even an annual yellow rubber duck race (yup, every April). And although there’s always been a lively music scene, the town has never been known as a destination for touring musicians. Sean Spellman is aiming to change that. Spellman’s company, Westerly Sound, is playing a key role in the revival of Westerly’s arts scene, a movement he hopes will make the town a destination for Rhode Islanders and tourists alike. The goal is “to present art, food, film, and concert events in unique spaces throughout Westerly and

its surrounding area,” Spellman says. A midway point between Boston and New York, the town at the southwestern corner of the state is poised to become a stop on national music tours, with concert venues such as the Knickerbocker Music Center and the United Theatre ready to welcome them. Spellman founded Westerly Sound in 2017 when he held the United Folk Festival, an outdoor festival to benefit the United Theatre. “My partner and I were both touring musicians for over a decade,” he explains. “I was born in New London, Connecticut but lived out on the West Coast

for some time. When we moved to Westerly and settled here, we missed being able to see quality music all the time. So we just started calling our friends and booking shows at the Knickerbocker. It started as just a way to connect with our friends who were passing through on tour.” Following the festival, Spellman decided to do a year-round series at different locations around town. “We did it for about two years and then the pandemic hit,” he says. “We took a little hiatus and then this year, we’ve noticed Westerly is transforming. There’s a lot of new energy here, so much positivity.”

The island boasts two lighthouses with the easiest to access being Southeast Light on Mohegan Bluffs. Built in 1875, it was moved 300 feet inland in 1993 due to the erosion of its original perch.

HEALTHY AND ENTICING EATS FROM A BELOVED BLOCK ISLAND CAFE An island staple for nourishing eats, Persephone’s Kitchen is the vision of owner Persephone Brown, who opened the cafe eight years ago. Now, the flourishing kitchen boasts a menu of fresh flavors in a vibrant atmosphere, though Brown’s humble roots started with home cooking as a vegetarian during a time when plantbased alternatives were scarce. “It wasn’t until I went to school for nutrition that I started preparing food more professionally,” says Brown. “I ran guided whole food cleanses and eventually began selling fresh salads and gluten-free baked goods at the Block Island Farmers Market.” Brown’s first food prep job was as a baker for the same space her cafe now resides. When she had the chance to start Persephone’s Kitchen, she jumped on it.

“Every day the cafe fills up and I see people dancing in line or ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’ over the food – it’s the biggest compliment. I’m so moved to have this extension of myself.” Brown oversees a staff of young employees who keep the vibe fun while serving hundreds of customers every day. Meanwhile, she focuses her attention on the details, ensuring a smooth operation. “I make sure the food looks and tastes as it should, the music is just the right tempo, and everyone leaves feeling a little brighter than when they came in. With an emphasis on catering to dietary restrictions and creating food that entices, Brown shares, “It’s important to me that everyone can find something they like, and that they taste the extra little bit of love and care that we put in.”

While donuts are always an option, other locally owned breakfast nooks are in no short supply. Down a quiet alleyway on Dodge Street is Persephone’s Kitchen: here you will find the legendary Splendid Egg Sandwich, along with a collection of ornately crafted toasts, smoothie bowls, quiches, and lunch melts. Persephone’s parents, who are cafe regulars, will tell you the secret ingredient that makes everything taste so good is love, and they’re right. The Cracked Mug, which just opened their second location on Payne’s Dock in New Harbor, offers perfect cups of locally roasted coffee and freshly baked pastries year-round. Explore another corner of the island and head to Bethany’s Airport Diner. With a view of the Block Island Airport – the second busiest in the state – you can watch New England Airlines’ fleet and private planes in action over a sky-high stack of pancakes.

Established in 1876, The Yellow Kittens is the island’s oldest tavern, where DJs and bands entertain most nights and getting your groove on in the center of their timeworn dancefloor just feels right. Colorful Outlook Inside the East Greenwich home and studio of the illustrator behind familiar murals around the state Bobby Souza and Liz Kelley were happy living the newlywed life in Providence. For four years they rented an apartment but as time went on and thoughts turned to starting a family, the pair decided to embark on the search for a house. Both found themselves drawn to East Greenwich, a town known for its stellar public school system, vibrant downtown, and mix of historic and pastoral spaces. This was the winter of 2018 and the couple was feeling discouraged by a lack of listings until a small house caught their attention. What sealed the deal was a 1,000-square-foot outbuilding that would make an ideal studio for Kelley, a working illustrator, muralist, and interior designer. The house, a modest ranch built in 1956, sits on three acres and in addition to the studio, boasts a two-horse barn. “It’s small but we don’t mind that – it’s so cozy. It has a fireplace and a wood burning stove in the basement,” says Kelley. “The prior owner was a boat-builder – hence the studio.” Kelley notes that they are slowly renovating, with plans to open up the first floor and build a carport. Design-wise, both the home and studio share the sensibilities found in Kelley’s work, a growing portfolio that includes a mural in nearby KNEAD Doughnuts on Main Street. Her colors are muted and chic, many landing someplace

in the fawn colorway. “I keep the palette calm and tend to lean more towards gray, cream, and black as a base for any part of our home, and add color through textiles: green drapes in [son] Luke’s room, bedding in our room, blues speckled throughout.”

Favorite things in the home are pieces that the couple has constructed or refreshed themselves. “The raw poplar floating desk in the living room was built by my husband and his father; it fills dead space and works as a catchall.” Another prized project is refurbished kitchen cabinetry; however their son’s bed, built by Souza in the woodshop part of the studio, “takes the cake!” says Kelley.

In a Pickle Ocean State Pickleball brings America’s fastest growing sport to South County I’m not a team sports sort of person. With a career spent mostly as a freelancer, it’s no surprise I like to go it alone. But for some reason, pickleball called to me. (Maybe it was the name – I love pickles.) Pickleball is a mashup of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. Played on a badminton-size court, the game uses a large, flat paddle to send a wiffle ball, roughly the size of a baseball, back and forth over a net. Kinder to the body than its more aggressive cousin tennis, pickleball is America’s fastest growing sport. Even Dumb and Dumber actor Jeff Daniels (also a prolific playwright) wrote a comedy about the game, which

is premiering at his Michigan theater next month. USA Pickleball, the sport’s official governing body, is 50,000 members strong. The US Open Pickleball Championship (yes, there is one) airs on CBS Sports in April. Retirees are credited for its rapid rise, which may explain why its US Open is held in Naples, Florida. Even though I am creeping ever closer to social security age, Kara Biller, founder of Ocean State Pickleball, assures me that there are plenty of GenXers and Millennials taking to the courts. Indeed, according to the 2022 Pickleball Report from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, only 17 percent of

pickleballers are aged 65 and up; under-25s make up a third of the players. Biller, a former college tennis athlete, founded Ocean State Pickleball during COVID, after her pandemic-induced job loss as an occupational therapist. Introduced to the sport by a friend, she “poo-pooed it,” given her tennis background. However, after she picked up a paddle and played for the first time, she recalls, “I thought, this is occupational therapy.” Pickleball, she explains, ticks off the three boxes of OT. “The game uses your brain a lot, which is good for memory. It’s good exercise, and there’s a great social component to the activity. That’s huge.”

I meet Biller at the upper tennis courts at Old Mountain Field in South Kingstown for my first lesson. “Former athletes like the game,” she says. “Speed, strength, and coordination are big advantages.” Coordination? I was the kid that always took a ball to the face in elementary school PE. “Anyone can play this game,” she assures me. Biller ran down rules of the game – of which there are plenty – before we began our lesson. The most important takeaway: keep the ball low. Unlike tennis, where a nice pop up can confound your opponent, pickleball is best played close to the net. “It’s really about the footwork,” she says. To begin, Biller ran me through a series of warmups, which include dynamic stretches and, surprisingly, walking with a slightly exaggerated trunk rotation (Biller says it’s

the way we should be walking, to get more core involved) as well as lunges with a twist. We did some sideways speed work, reminding me of the importance of working in all planes of movement. We wrapped things up with a monster walk, legs kicking up on each step, for a great hamstring stretch. Warm up complete, I was primed to begin my first lesson. Tennis wasn’t something I pursued in my youth and for pickleball, that’s a good thing, since the similarities end at the clay court. Sure, you want to hit a ball over a net, but a strong backhand isn’t the point of the game. I got into a knees-slightly-bent position, with my weight on my toes, and we began to volley. It went against every instinct to keep from giving the ball a hard whack. “You don’t want to play with your whole body,” Biller said,

reminding me to focus on footwork instead. It took a while, but I finally got the hang of it, able to serve and volley back and forth for 10 or so times before my next hit would go out of control. Biller recommends three 90-minute lessons to get the basics down, and, she notes, the other players are always supportive of newbies, ready to help coach them through the intricacies of the sport. While pickleball doesn’t have the same appeal as a crunchy kosher dill, I can see myself playing fun, low-stakes games with friends. For the more competitive, Ocean State Pickleball offers several leagues and tournaments. But they also have one-on-one and group lessons as well as match play sessions. production was curtailed by the pandemic. When it came time for The Gamm to plot out this year’s season, Estrella saw the rights to the play were back on the table, so he folded it into the season. “[Trinity Rep] has precedent, as they should; the playwright needs to get the biggest audience possible,” says Estrella. “But we’re fighting from this smaller theater perspective.” This means Estrella keeps his eye on original work from more far-flung locales, particularly Great Britain. “Every morning, the first thing I do is read The Guardian theater section,” he says with a laugh. The second half of the season has that anglophile bent. Estrella considers The Faith Healer, by the Northern Irish dramatist Brian Friel, a sort of seasonal shift, moving from the topicality of Russia and fading factory towns

to a play that weaves a more pensive, but no less spellbinding, story. In interlocking monologues, a traveling healer and his companions recount a tragic night. “It’s like a four-part symphony,” says Estrella, who considers it a ghost story, one that commands the audience to sit back and listen. “I think it gets to the mythic roots of storytelling, and why we need live theater,” he says. “There’s a fundamental thing in us that needs to try to understand [life’s] complexities on a deeper level.” The penultimate play in the season, Let the Right One In, is an adaptation of the horror novel-turned-cult-classic independent movie that premiered off-West End in London before transferring to St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn, where it created a mini-sensation, not the least of which was because of

There’s an alchemy to putting together a theater season and Tony Estrella, artistic director of The Gamm Theatre, is well attuned to that magic. “I think of seasons like a record album, where the songs are sequenced for a reason,” he says. “I want that same connection for the season, where the plays speak to each other. I want resonance for the subscriber, for us all to be in this collective headspace.” In the spacious Gamm lobby, it’s incredible to think that this established and thriving Warwick theater has its roots on the fringe. A group of artists who grew out of Trinity Rep founded Alias Stage, the precursor to The Gamm, which was structured as an intense artist collective. Bold and adventurous, they leaned into the intimacy between actor and audience. It was a production of Antony and Cleopatra in a garage on Elbow Street that put the fledgling company on the map. Fittingly, their season opener, Rajiv Joseph’s Describe the Night – which bundles 90 years of Russian history in one play – feels as audacious as doing Shakespeare in a car port. Estrella explains that the play was a last-minute addition to the season, one he didn’t think about until Russia invaded Ukraine. “It rang a bell in my head about this great play.” Estrella leans forward, his whole body kinetic as he describes the play. “It’s dealing with these characters like [Isaac] Babel and Putin, but what it’s really about is how we manufacture truth, politically, and the play posits a kind of conspiracy theory that is very attractive, but factually, as far as we know, untrue. So how do we draw the line between fiction and reality? It’s increasingly hard, right? What theater can do, what art can do, is help contextualize this.” The second play in their season, Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Sweat, was the pre-pandemic play that got away. A topical look at America’s economic decline through the lens of a community of blue-collar factory workers whose lives are ripped apart by layoffs, it felt apropos for the birthplace of the industrial revolution. But The Gamm’s original request was declined, with the rights going to Trinity Rep. However, that

the amount of blood spilled on stage. (It is a vampire tale, after all.) Jack Thorne, who went on to pen Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway as well as His Dark Materials for Netflix, adapted it. “I’m not the biggest horror movie fan in the world, but there’s something about that play that gets underneath your skin and moves you to your core in kind of an eternal way,” says Estrella. It’s also a complicated bit of stagecraft, that calls not only for copious amounts of blood but a heart-pounding scene that involves plenty of water. “We’re coming up with an exciting way to do it that hopefully will surprise people.” Playwright Thorne’s Harry Potter faced off with Lucy Kirkwood’s The Children, which wraps up The Gamm’s season, for the Tony Award for Best Play back in 2018. (For the record, “the boy who lived” won.) Set at the end of a nuclear disaster, the play is a three-hander whose small cast belies its oversized impact. That could serve as a metaphor for The Gamm. “I think that’s part of our identity as a theater,” Estrella says. “One does that kind of work – meaning bold, certainly provocative – with all the complexity intact and a nice variety of plays that are surprising.” GammTheatre.org

Pizza Perfect Pasquale Illiano grips the handle of a pizza peel in his hands while staring into his volcano-shaped, wood-fired oven. Its glowing embers heat pizza dough so fast that it chars, rises, and is ready in roughly a minute. The red-tiled oven, custom made in his home city of Naples, is a focal point in the back dining room of his South Kingstown restaurant Pasquale’s Pizzeria. On this summer Friday evening, Illiano and his cooks are continuously moving

Neapolitan-style pizzas in and out of the roughly 900-degree forno to satisfy the after-work crowd and hungry vacationers. Not far from where he’s cooking, Illiano displays his framed certification from Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (AVPN). It illustrates his aptitude and faithfulness to the association’s rigorous pizza-making standards. The AVPN guidelines describe everything from the diameter of the thin-crust pizza to the

placing of the mozzarella, which “should appear in evenly spread patches, with the green of the basil leaves slightly darkened by the cooking process.” In fact, Illiano is not only certified – he’s the organization’s designated trustee and consultant for New England. If the AVPN learns that a restaurant is struggling to stay true to its pizza-making guidelines, “I go in and I help them out,” Illiano says. “And you know, that’s pretty neat.”

Illiano’s cooking has recently received recognition including a mention in the Italian food and wine magazine Gambero Rosso and inclusion on a list of the best pizzas in America put together by an Italian website called 50TopPizza. “We happen to be a little bit out of the way – we’re not even in Providence – but I was lucky enough that they visited,” he says. “We got 33 out of 50, which I consider to be okay. I’m a very picky and ambitious guy, so I’m kind of shooting for a better ranking next year.” After all, Illiano has been perfecting his skills for roughly 35 years. Born in Naples, he started making pizza while working in a tourist resort as a teenager and quickly became fascinated by the process. In 1995, he came to the United States for a cooking job and settled in Virginia before moving on to positions in New York and later Rhode Island. Noticing the increasing American interest in the pizza of his youth, Illiano opened Pasquale’s Pizzeria in 2015 in the South County Commons complex. In 2020, to keep up with demand, he moved the restaurant from its original location across the street to its current, larger space. He then created Neapolis, a gourmet market with imported Italian groceries, baked goods, and freshly made gelato, in the original storefront. Illiano, who lives in Westerly with his wife and daughters, is quick to point out that his pizza-making skills aren’t limited to the Neapolitan style. At Neapolis, he serves Romanstyle pizza by the slice, and at the restaurant, he also offers New Yorkstyle and Grandma pies, which are cooked in an electric oven. “When I do something, I get really into it,” says Illiano, “and pizza happened to be one of those things that when I was exposed to it, I wanted to go all the way in.” PasqualesPizzeriaRI.com

Micro-farm specializing in gourmet garlic in Charlestown Amanda Roberto and her husband closed on their one-acre Charlestown property in February 2021, cleared out a half an acre of dead trees and thick brambles in May, and opened Wicked Roots Micro Farm one month later. She brought in veggies and plants from her parents’ farm in Hope Valley while her plants established themselves. Meanwhile, she began forging relationships with other growers to carry their items at the farm stand. “This was something we knew we wanted to do; we just didn’t realize how fast we’d do it,” she says. Wicked Roots specializes in organically grown strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, heirloom tomatoes, and gourmet garlic – Roberto grows 12 different varieties. She also has “the basics” like eggplant, cucumber, and peppers, as well as goods from neighboring farms like Bee Happy Homestead. “It’s important to support local businesses,” she says. “The strawberries I sold this week paid for my daughter’s swimming lessons.” Charlestown, @Wicked_Roots_RI

Organic produce and artisanal goods in Watch Hill If there is such a thing as artisanal farmers, you’ll find them at William Wright & Co tucked into a Watch Hill cove. “Our farmers are beyond organic,” says Rebecca Wright, who runs the stand with her three teen daughters. Working with farms sized between one and 10 acres, the stand carries produce from idiosyncratic farmers, like Brewster Orchards and Just Dug Potatoes, whose farmer handpicks the bugs off the potato leaves every morning.

Wright believes in small-batch everything. In addition to carrying the produce from small acreage farms, she offers goods like an organic lip balm hand-crafted by Kings Of Leon’s personal assistant and organic, smallbatch Norwegian crackers made in Brooklyn, as well as the Westerly-made Nana’s Bread. “It’s all stuff I love,” says Wright. “It was our dream to have a farm,” says Gina Thurn, who with her husband Loren purchased Our Kids Farm in 2007. At the time, the farm was solely greenhouses, focusing on annuals, perennials, and vegetable transplants. In 2008, when the economy crashed, they transitioned to selling greenhouse produce. “It was a way to keep the wolves at bay,” Thurn recalls. “Half our assets went up in smoke.” With a focus on year-round growing, the Thurns keep their honor stand and CSA program active every season. Along with their own produce, find the stand stocked with items from other local farms and makers, like cheese from Narragansett Creamery and Beautiful Day granola bars. After recently installing electric heaters in two greenhouses, which are run on solar power, they are able to keep both open through winter to grow warmer weather crops. and Passaretti found herself in need of a creative outlet. “I was looking into different ways to create cocktails and bring people an at-home experience,” she says. The amazing wife-and-wife duo Stephanie and Lindsay Haigh are the owners and operators of this cute bistro, and they ooze passion about what they do. Scratch-made pastries, breads, sandwiches, and more, as well as local organic coffee from Dean’s Beans, are all created and

curated with the utmost care. One step onto the ethereal property and we were immediately drawn to its charm. Secluded outdoor seating underneath a canopy of trees makes for the perfect intimate getaway, or a beautiful deck filled with private and communal seating options is perfect for friend groups. filling the air. We dined on a couple of delicious bites: avocado on multigrain toast with all the garnishes and a breakfast sandwich with thick-cut bacon on a sweet Portuguese muffin. Then we grabbed some sweets and headed to Beavertail Lighthouse for a stroll, taking in the views of stunning Narragansett Bay.

NEW NEIGHBOR Strolling through downtown Jamestown is a treat in itself; souvenir shops, housewares, and art galleries are all on hand. After a bit of shopping and watching the many sailboats in the harbor, we sauntered over for an early dinner at Beech, just steps away from The Ganny. Beech is a newcomer to Jamestown’s eclectic dining scene and aims to be an all-seasons gathering place built around a 150-year-old beech tree. If you’re familiar with the former Simpatico, the location is now the home of Beech, where you can find several romantic dining areas, including a lively outdoor bar and rooftop nicknamed “The Treehouse.”

Satisfying pub fare from Narragansett Cafe

LANDMARK LUNCH After working up our lunchtime appetite, we settled into a cozy table at Narragansett Cafe. Known locally as “The Ganny,” this spot has been a Conanicut Island staple since 1946 for quality pub fare, live music, a relaxed atmosphere, and staff that make you feel as though you’re family. When Cecelia Verta and Joseph Colon (both now in their 70s) learned that the downtown landmark was up for sale at the end of 2020, they were afraid that Jamestown wouldn’t quite be the same without it. They set out to purchase the establishment with the sole purpose of “keeping things the way they are,” they share, and to ensure there’s always “a safe place where locals can come to eat, drink, and mingle.” Our favorite eats on the menu were the fish ‘n chips with homemade tartar sauce, gigantic clam cakes, and crispy onion rings. We made a promise to each other that we would come back for the live music they feature weekly (with no cover charges, ever).

Operating partner Kevin Gaudreau and executive chef Eric Warren do a terrific job of showcasing the unique terroir of the region by using locally sourced produce and seafood to create imaginative yet familiar dishes. Because of the newness of Beech (we were lucky enough to be their first seated guests), we wanted to sample as much as possible. Highlights include the crispy fried Brussels sprouts with a green onion aioli and chili peppers; toasted clams with parmesan, oregano, and butter; and George’s Bank scallops with a lemon beurre blanc – we can’t stop thinking about this exquisite coastal risotto dish. A return trip to Jamestown may have to include a couple of repeat visits, but thankfully for us, there’s even more to explore along Narragansett Avenue that a single day out couldn’t contain.
