A COVID Bright Spot Gracious Volunteers Lead Remodeling Efforts of Emilie’s Treasures You’ve heard the adage: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” That’s exactly what some enthusiastic and determined volunteers did when faced with the adversity of Emilie’s Treasures Thrift shop being closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Remodeling a store is challenging when time, resources and money are limited. That didn’t stop a group of highly innovative Emilie’s volunteers, led by Mike and Bonnie Cervino, from recognizing the window of opportunity the COVID closure provided them to accomplish a long-standing goal of giving the shop a makeover.
A generous donor stepped forward to fund the renovation when they learned of the effort taking place. The combination of generous donations, willing and enthusiastic volunteers, and a can-do attitude all combined to create a lovely, refreshed space for residents, caregivers and guests to find just the right treasure at Emilie’s. Stop by the next time you’re at The Mount and see the space for yourself — you might even find a treasure that you can’t live without.
Without formal funding for the project, and with no ability to make structural changes within the space, Mike and Bonnie formulated a vision with input from other long standing volunteers and went to work. They reached out to their niece, Jennifer Chapman, who happens to be an architect and offered pro-bono services, to come up with an updated layout for the shop. She captured the new vision for the shop in a technical layout and the volunteer team approved

Rita Mae Daubenspeck Bequeaths Transformative Gift to The Mount As a donor for nearly 30 years, Rita Daubenspeck believed strongly in the continuing mission of the Sisters of Providence to serve the poor and the vulnerable at Providence Mount St. Vincent — ensuring that elders in need of care and a helping hand would always have a place to turn.

As an avid gardener, Rita envisioned and oversaw the design of her and her late husband Harold’s beautiful Magnolia estate landscaping. She loved sharing it with others and celebrated that she wanted “everything planted big and ready for today,” as there was no time to wait given her age in the early 90’s at the time. Rita applied the same beautiful vision and inspired action through many aspects of her life, including her faith and love for family and friends. Rita also sought to ‘think big’ in her philanthropic efforts. In her death, her legacy of generosity will live on at The Mount and in the many charities for which she carefully planned for in her estate planning. With heartfelt gratitude for Rita’s transformative vision and generosity, The Mount continues its critical mission and promise to provide home and excellent care for all residents — even as financial means are exhausted.

Most Successful Black Tie Bingo Ever! The friends and fans of Black Tie Bingo came together virtually in 2021 to achieve record breaking results raising more than $250,000 to benefit The Mount’s residents and programs. While an on-line platform may not have the same level of live energy, synergy or magic as the in-person event, our generous community made up for it by spreading the word electronically far and wide. More than 350 donors made gifts and to top it off, all Mount neighborhoods met their goal of raising $2,500 or more which was rewarded by bringing beautiful dessert dash deliveries to all residents!

Residents enjoyed the August Summer Concert series in small groups on the patio, thanks to wonderful donations to our music fund and creative scheduling by our recreation staff.
