Natalia Tovilla-Bátiz Section Editor York University is home to many varsity and intramural Lions teams. However, I learned that one team in particular is advocating for a change in their team’s status and for increased funding. During Orientation Week training, I met a fellow Glendon student named Paula Godoy Sosa who shared what has been going on with the YorkU Women’s Football team. From then on, I knew this story had to be shared. Soon afterwards, I met with the YorkU Women’s Football team Co-Captains, Zahra Lila and Keren Liwanag, to learn more about their current situation, what they have been struggling with, and what they hope for the team’s future. The women’s football team regularly practices at Keele and

is affiliated with York but is not formally funded by them. This lack of formal funding affects them in almost every aspect of their sporting lives. Despite the men’s team being recognized as a varsity team, the women’s team is not formally considered equal. They have been fighting for every permission they receive as a competitive women’s team. The team has faced struggles and barriers with actually getting scheduled field space at York’s stadiums and athletic facilities. Shockingly, it wasn’t until mid-season of 2023 that the team was finally able to get field space at York to practice on. This is an upgrade to the alternative they had been previously relying on, which was having practices off-campus at public parks and fields. In the winter, they have to hold practices in the cold snow of out-

door fields with, at times, unplowed snow that goes up to their knees. However, if the men’s teams arrive during their practices, they are forced to get off the field even though they are in the middle of a practice. This is because, as a non-varsity team, they cannot reserve spaces within athletic indoor facilities, whose spots are available only for other teams’ use. The women’s football season typically runs from October to April which coincidentally are the coldest months of the year. The men’s football season runs at a different time (typically during the months without snow) and they are allowed to practice and play in the York Dome. Why can’t women in a non-varsity team who also represent the university and play the same sport be given the same opportunity to

Saying Goodbye to Matthew Perry Olivia Gallo English Journalist Matthew Perry, born August 19, 1969, son of Suzanne Langford and actor John Bennett Perry, sadly passed away on October 28, 2023. Perry said in an interview with “Q with Tom Power Podcast” that once he passed away, he did not want to be remembered as the guy from “Friends,” he wanted to be remembered for how much he has helped people. Although we all loved him in “Friends,”1 he was much more of a character in his own right than the beloved Chandler Bing. He was a man we can learn a lot from. After his parents split when he was one, Perry lived in Canada with his mother. Later in life, he moved to L.A.. Forced to pick between playing tennis or acting, Perry chose acting. His first minor roles were in shows like “A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon,” the sitcom “Second Chance,” along with “Boys Will Be Boys,” “Empty Nest,” “Growing Pains,” and “Home Free.” Perry took his first sip of alcohol at the age of 14, launching his struggle with addiction, and leading to regular alcohol consumption until the age of 21, when he realized he had a problem. Along with alcohol consumption, Perry was injured in a jet ski accident on the set of “Fools Rush,” after which, he was prescribed Vicodin for the pain. This would spark his addiction to Vicodin, taking more than 50 Vicodin a day. Perry found his big break when he landed a leading role as the notorious

Chandler Bing in the sitcom “Friends,” which was to debut in 1994. The show garnered a lot of attention and became one of the most popular TV sitcoms of all time. He made life-long friendships with his five cast members, and even won an Emmy, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Award in 2002. Fans of “Friends” started 1 “Q with Tom Power | Live Radio | CBC Listen,” CBC Listen, n.d., https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-50-q).

to notice in later seasons that he had lost a lot of weight. It was publicized that he was addicted to alcohol and Vicodin. And Perry spoke out about his addiction and the mental struggle he was going through. He completed rehab in 1997 and again in 2001 after he relapsed. In his book, Perry wrote that he spent an estimated seven million2 trying to get sober: the money went to over 15 visits to rehab and over 6,000 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. While struggling alone with his own addiction, Perry put in the work to try to support other addicts who were struggling: he converted his old Malibu home into a sober living facility called Perry’s House.3 Perry faced many health complications from his drug use, such as pancreatitis and a gastrointestinal perforation which led to hospitalization. He had undergone 14 surgeries and had a colostomy bag for nine months. While hospitalized in a coma and he was eventually connected to an ECMO machine, which kept him breathing manually. “The ECMO move is often called a Hail Mary”4 because there had been four deaths that week from people on the ECMO machine. He wrote in his memoir that the doctors told him he had a one to two percent chance of living. He lived. Defying the odds, Perry went on to live another 20 years. Perry’s battle ended on October 28. At the age of 54, he was found unresponsive by the authorities in the jacuzzi of his L.A. home, at around 4 in the afternoon. Said to not have been on drugs or relapsing, it seems as though it was cardiac arrest which led him to drown.5 Perry passed away sober, leaving a world that adored him both on and off set, and showing his fans that with determination, you are capable of anything. He will forever be remembered. If you or anyone you know is struggling with addiction, please contact 1-866-531-2600, the Ontario Mental Health and Addictions Hotline.

Le titre de l’album, « The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We », reflète déjà les thèmes introspectifs et contemplatifs qui traversent chaque piste. Musicalement, « The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We » continue de démontrer le style caractéristique de Mitski

Amie Sosa Journaliste bilingue As autumn leaves blanket the campus grounds and the trees begin to look bare, a peculiar phenomenon has caught the attention of students and visitors alike. In the heart of the campus, within the historic and elegant Glendon Manor, cryptic and unsettling graffiti has left many scratching their heads. Rows upon rows of tally marks, etched meticulously on the walls with thick black paint, have become the subject of intrigue, speculation, and, dare I say, a hint of spookiness. I first stumbled upon this “work of art” when I mistakenly turned in the wrong hallway attempting to leave Lunik. I was immediately startled but also intrigued. Was it left here on purpose? A sign? A marking? A warning? Questions raced through my mind. I needed to get to the bottom of this. However, despite my best efforts to uncover the secrets behind these markings, it appears that the Glendon tally marks remain shrouded in mystery, their origins and purpose concealed beneath layers of history. Theories have emerged, but answers remain elusive.

Furthermore, there’s an undercurrent of ghostly whispers on campus, adding to the mystique of the tally marks. Stories of unexplained phenomena, strange noises, and eerie sightings have been shared by students, faculty, and even community members fuelling the idea that there might be more to the Glendon Campus than meets the eye. It has been previously noted that there have been haunting and ghost sightings on campus especially in the manor. Could these eerie occurrences be connected to the cryptic graffiti in some way?

The YorkU Women’s Football Team: Needing Varsity Touchdowns (cont.) Natalia Tovilla-Bátiz Section Editor practice and play in the York Dome, especially given the fact that their season is during the fall and winter months?

There are no women’s football jerseys that are specially designed for women’s sizes or use. The female players on the team have been borrowing men’s football jerseys for their practices and games for a long time. In fact, according to Zahra and Keren, “there were no women’s jerseys last year because the university did not order them” on time. They also expressed that “last year, [they] had to use tape for numbers on jerseys because [they] didn’t have enough for more participants,” and that “everything has to be ordered in bulk, there’s an 8-12 week wait time, and that means the stuff is not coming in until November, and the first three tournaments women will have to use men’s equipment, gear, and jerseys. This year, [they] don’t think [they’ll] have enough of everything for more participants.” This is shocking, appalling, degrading, and undignified as a women’s sports team that is made up of York University students. They need equipment that is made for women’s sizes, is specifically ordered for them and delivered on time, and to not be kicked off the fields during their practices just because men’s teams happen to show up. Lack of funds affects the team’s ability to go out and participate in national tournaments and games off-campus against other universities’ women’s football teams. They expressed that if they were registered as a varsity team, they would have the funds to have administrative help that organizes the financial future, game schedule, practice schedule, etc. The men’s team gets paid coaches whereas the women are forced to get volunteer coaches. Now, since the start of this year, they have been assigned a football coach to help with the operations of the team, and the Co-Captains report that they have had an easier time navigating the struggles they’ve had to perpetually confront. Specifically, Zahra and Keren consider that they have had a “better experience with field time” and that “the new team manager books fields for them,” which they say has been useful since the start of the season. This is progress but, again, not enough for the future Zahra and Keren envision at York University. The progressive change that both Zahra and Keren hope and advocate for is to gain varsity status as a university team, with all the appropriate administrative and financial support that comes with it. As a team that competes in national tournaments, they expressed that everyone plays seriously but are unfortunately not recognized by YorkU as a team worthy of varsity status. Lack of financial support is the reason that the players are all forced to pay

out of pocket for booking buses and other forms of transportation to and from different games. Lack of varsity status means that players are forced to bring their personal flags and balls because the team does not have enough support from York, and also forces everything to be student-led — the executive members are responsible for running most of the operations of the team. If they had varsity status, equipment would be proper and sufficient in quantity, and the continual stress of planning would be alleviated from the execs, allowing them to focus on giving their all to the game on the field without worrying about anything else. If they were allowed to play indoors, Zahra said, “it would create safer playing conditions and would prevent and reduce the chances of injuries because we can’t rely on the weather.” Both Co-Captains of the team emphasized that playing indoors would make playing the sport easier, safer, and more accessible for the women. The safety of playing indoors should not be a privilege. In their final remarks, Zahra expressed that “flag football is the fastest growing sport in the world and it’s being added to the Olympics,” and also emphasized that it “gives a lot of opportunities to those playing the sport.” The Canadian na-

tional team for women’s flag football was created in February 20201 and has become one of the best teams dominating the sport worldwide. According to Football Canada, there is also a competitive national Canadian flag football team called the Senior Women’s Flag National Team that competes regularly at domestic and international levels.2 Recently, it was announced that Team Canada and Concordia University Quarterback, Sara Parker, would be competing in the Summer 2024 IFAF Flag Football World Championship; she is said to hopefully become one of the first Canadian female Olympic flag football players, as the International Olympic Committee reviewed and approved a 2028 request that flag football become an Olympic sport.3 1 Football Canada, “Football Canada Announces Women’s National Flag Team”, Football Canada, February 27, 2020. “https:// footballcanada.com/news/football-canada-announces-womens-national-flag-team/.” 2 Football Canada, “Senior Women’s Flag National Team” Football Canada, Date Unknown. “https://footballcanada.com/national-team/flag/female/senior-womens-flag-national-team/ “. 3 Rutherford, Karina. “Newly selected for Olympic competition, flag football is poised for a breakout,” Sports Network, October 25, 2023. “https://www.sportsnet.ca/olympics/

Campus Life Women’s flag football is indeed a very competitive and real sport that York University should take into consideration as a new investment opportunity that can potentially produce the next generation of players and help develop the future viewership of women’s sports. Despite all of the barriers and complications they face, playing flag football at the university level means too much to the players for them to just quit this fight. Co-Captain Keren emotionally expressed that what makes the struggle worth it is “seeing girls putting all of their talent into one thing, coming together and building a relationship with each other, everyone is coming together for what they can do and what they are capable of. In this sport, there are some girls who can run fast and those who cannot. They are still involved in working together as a team even though we don’t have the same skill sets.” In agreement, Co-Captain Zahra said what made the sport still worth playing and fighting for is “having fun” because “it’s playing the sport I love with the people I love.” Evidently, this is a team that fosters community-building, passion, and teamwork, all while producing competitive athletes. That’s So Last Season

I just want to look at the colourful leaves all around, Still clinging to trees, scattered on the ground, floating in the air. But I can’t stand being outside anymore. The wind makes it impossible to feel the sun touching my face. And besides, It’s November and there’s too much to do.

The Summer Heat makes us undress from bombers and boots to spaghetti straps and shorts. Fickle is her sense of style: what’s ‘Hot’ right now is cold to her tomorrow. The Trees, this fiery season, dress up in coats and toques and boots of green. I blink away the Fall and suddenly Earth is fashioned as are beds with linen. Winter cycles back in Vogue — the trees run hot; some in blankets, some are not.

There’s so much to do, see? No time to look at dead leaves. For now, I check the time. It’s almost nine. Before I sleep, I need to Take a deep breath in, Make myself a cup of tea, Read a few pages of the novel that I’ll eventually finish, Tell someone, anyone, that I love them.

Expressions produisent autour d’elles.

7. Navigating Attention Loss

much content available.4 I believe this has become more apparent with the viewing of TikTok videos, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts as they offer so much information in videos as short as 15 seconds and as long as three minutes. I find myself bored when watching videos because I am not given the information within the first 10 seconds. Mark offers many tasks and practices we can include in our daily routines to help us concentrate more and lessen the chance of exhaustion. She states that we should take breaks to prevent exhaustion and burnout; allowing the breaks to replenish us. When we take breaks we will have more energy, more attentional capacity, and we can do more. Mark says that for us to be successful with our attention span, we must be self-aware of our energy level and our differences to ensure that our efforts are effective. She makes a note of the Pomodoro technique, expressing that it might work for some and not others. The same goes for many other techniques as well. We tend to hear the concerning notion that our attention spans are decreasing, but as Brittany King said, it is the way we are evolving.5 Although it can be a bit hard to study, or pay attention for long periods, there are many practices we can conduct to combat the decline. It is important to learn what our strengths and weaknesses are, what makes us tired and where our attention gravitates towards to ensure utmost success. There’s an array of reasons as to why we cannot concentrate like we used to, the first being our exposure to information overload. So how do we navigate this? The solution lies in our discipline strategies. Begin with acknowledging your struggles with schoolwork, work, extracurriculars and study sessions, and start incorporating breaks, working during your peak productivity hours, and, possibly, leveraging music. Allow yourself to get a proper amount of sleep, and don’t let yourself fall into sleep debt how much sleep you need and how much you get.6 Remove distrac-

Olivia Gallo English Journalist We live in a time where sitting still for too long or watching a video that is longer than 15 seconds is uncomfortable. A study cited by eLearning Industry suggests a significant decline in our attention spans. The study shows that around the year 2000, the average attention span had declined to about eight seconds as opposed to the previously analyzed 12 seconds.1 Brittany King from eLearning says that as the social dependency on mobile devices grows and we receive information very quickly and at all times, we expect to receive information just as quickly and constantly. King attributes this decline to an aspect of human evolution where we can multitask far better than our ancestors. We are also able to be highly selective when absorbing information as it is available to us through a multitude of devices and channels.2 In a study from Gloria Mark where she expressed there was a decrease in attention span when studying people on their computers in 2004. She gathered that the average attention span on the screen was around two and a half minutes, whereas, in 2012, she found it to be around 75 seconds. She argues that our attention spans only leave room for errors in our multitasking.3 Mark admits that she has sped up a podcast or a video to receive the information faster. She argues that the potential reason as to why we do this is because we want to fit more content into a shorter amount of time as though we are in a time crunch, because there is already so 1 Brittany K. Making Homemade Mexican Guacamole Natalia Tovilla-Bátiz Section Editor It’s been a pretty long day. The day isn’t over and you’re hungry. But not hungry enough for a big dinner. But not in the mood for food that isn’t delicious and comforting. Maybe you’re having a few friends over and want an easy appetizer that will not require too much prep or any use of an oven. Since the end of the pandemic, going out for Mexican food has become increasingly more expensive. Nevertheless, the cravings are still alive and at the back of your mind every single day you don’t satiate them. In this recipe, I’ll show you how to make fresh, delicious, and authentic Mexican guacamole that you can make for yourself as a snack and as a crowd-pleasing appetizer that runs out quickly before other guests arrive. Traditional Mexican guacamole has cilantro, also known as coriander, in it, but if you don’t like this herb, you can skip the steps with information about what to do with the cilantro. This recipe has been in my family for a long time and my grandma often makes it for everyone at home. It is my joy to share it with you! Ingredients • 3 to 4 ripe avocados

• • • • • •

1 to 2 tsp fresh lime juice (don’t use the pre-packaged juice version, get a real lime) 2 Roma tomatoes, diced 1/4 Spanish onion, diced 1 pinch of table salt (not sea salt) 1/4 cup cilantro (optional) 1 bag of Tostitos Scoops chips

Instructions 1. Gather your ripe avocados, remove the pit from each one, and cube the avocado as you put it into the medium-sized bowl. Mash it all with a fork. 2. Wash the tomatoes and cilantro. 3. Use the knife to dice the tomatoes, onions, and chop the cilantro. 4. Mix everything (tomatoes, onions, cilantro) into the medium-sized bowl with the mashed avocado. 5. Add the lime juice and salt, and mix again until evenly incorporated 6. And enjoy! Pro Tips A. If your guacamole is too salty: add a little bit more of the fresh lime juice to balance the salty and sour flavours. B. If your guacamole is too sour: add another pinch of salt because, again, it will balance the flavour and cancel out the sourness.

Issues and Ideas

Remembering the First Four-Legged Cosmonauts Maria Eydmans French Editor The 50s were marked by a massive developmental boom: in population, in capitalism, in rock-and-roll, in science and in political unrest. This “Golden Age” was plagued as a result of the Second World War, the Cold War and its viral airborne threats. Two superpowers — the Soviet Union and the United States — were fighting and competing with each other through advancements in world-changing technologies; not yet through bombs and violence. The Space Race was one such competition where the two earthly powers were competing to conquer otherworldly territories. The race first took place in a sub-orbit spaceflight, with the U.S. launching rockets full of fruit flies to test the presence of radiation on living organisms. With its success, America became the spatial superpower, creating a precedent and challenge for its competitors. Ambitious American “bioastronauts” then sent two monkeys into space who, unlike the fruit flies, did not return from their missions: Albert I did not survive the launch and Albert II died on im-

pact when his parachute refused to deploy on his way home. Two other Alberts were sent into space, neither of whom made it home. In the face of American sub-orbital “success,” the Soviet Union raced to keep up. After the “Albert Mission” of the late 1940s, the Soviet Union pushed for the initiation of its own suborbital flights and, like the United States, they tested for survival. Between 1950 and 1960, at least 24 dogs were collected to be sent into sub-orbit: Dezik, Gypsy, Fox I, Fox II, Ginger, Courage, Tiny, Bobby, Replacement-Bobby, Bravery, Snowflake, Whitey, Gypsygirl, Lady, Beauty, Bars, Foxy, Smoky, Fashionista, Booger, (all translated from the original Russian) and at least four other dogs whose names — if they were given any — are not mentioned. Roughly half died in their journey, all due to equipment failure. The canine death rate did not discourage Soviet scientists from pursuing space further. On October 4,1957 — nearly 10 years after the “Albert Mission” and ping-ponging of sub-orbital successes — Sputnik I was launched into space and made its way into orbit. It was the first of its kind and empty of any visible living organisms. This cross-orbital milestone instilled fear in Western nations (called the Sputnik Crisis) based on the unprecedented technological advancements they were making. The Soviet Union was then what the U.S. had been 10 years ago: ahead and expecting rebuttal. Rushing to become a multi-faceted leader in orbital flight, the So-

viet Union sent a dog-inhabited rocket into orbit less than one month after the first in history. The rocket blueprints were rushed, the rocket itself wasn’t properly equipped for living conditions and the dog was sent into space without any intention of being brought home. Laika (“Barker” or “Barky” in English) was a three-year-old stray, caught and “trained” by Soviet scientists in preparation for spaceflight. They had her eat only gelatin-based substances, confined her in a tight space for weeks and, through surgery, inserted transmitters that would monitor her pulse, breathing and blood pressure. Laika was sent away on November 3, 1957: “After placing Laika in the container and before closing the hatch, we kissed her nose and wished her bon voyage, knowing that she would not survive the flight,”1 said one of the last technicians to see her alive. Laika’s capsule — no bigger than a washing machine — was equipped with little more than an oxygen generator, a fan, and seven days’ worth of gelatinous food, despite the months-long flight. She was put in a diaper and chains to restrict movement so much so that she couldn’t turn around. She died only hours into the flight from stress, fear and overheating. Officials put out reports that she had been put to sleep for four days when the fan had failed and the cabin had reached unlivable temperatures. Some claimed that the cabin ran out of oxygen. Others said she was alive for seven days before her life-support system gave out. Regardless, Laika did not survive long enough to ingest the final portion of 1 Anatoly Zak, “Sputnik-2”, RussianSpaceWeb, archived from the original on September 24, 2015, https://www.russianspaceweb.com/sputnik2_preflight.html.

food which was poisoned for euthanization purposes. In the end, Sputnik II was in flight for five months and disintegrated entirely in its return to Earth’s atmosphere. Since Laika — or Curly, as she was called by the crew — there have been countless other dogs who have ventured into space. Most of them survived. Only three years later, Belka and Strelka (Squirrel and Arrow) were the first dogs to go to space and make it back. There have also been countless others. With certainty, we can say that Laika’s death was premeditated, avoidable and unjustified, as admitted by Oleg Gazenko, who conducted the pre-spaceflight surgeries on the dogs: “The more time passes, the more I’m sorry about it. We shouldn’t have done it ... We did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog.”2 Laika’s story brings into question the ethics of sacrificing life for the advancement of science. While others have tragically died before her, she was the first animal sent into space to die. This year marks the 66th anniversary of Muttnik’s voyage into space and, as much as I want to say the treatment of animals has gotten better, I cannot. Animals are still often treated as commodities and not living, breathing beings. I encourage you, reader, to look into Laika and other four-legged cosmonauts and astronauts, share their stories, and not let them remain nameless, as was our “Little Lemon” Laika. 2 “Message from the First Dog in Space Received 45 Years Too Late”, Dogs in the News, November 3, 2002, archived from the original on January 8, 2006, https://web.archive.org/web/20060108184335/ http://www.dogsinthenews.com/issues/0211/ articles/021103a.htm.

I already know what you think while reading my article’s title: “What a strange idea!” “Hamilton is such a bad city,” probably followed by, “There is nothing to do in Hamilton.” Indeed, when I told my Canadian friends that I went to Hamilton, each of them questioned “But…why?” However, Hamilton is a great city to spend your day in — but I definitely agree, I would not spend more than a day there. And who knows? Maybe by the end of this article, you may consider planning a trip to the underrated city of Hamilton. First of all, the quality of public transportation from Toronto to Hamilton is very good regarding the price, duration and bus frequencies. You can buy and plan your trip on GoTransit’s website. I bought a “Weekend Day Pass” for $10 which allows you to travel as much as you want across the GO Transit network. Plus, there are several buses throughout the day between Toronto and Hamilton (at least one per hour), so missing the bus isn’t something stressful. Finally, the trip is pretty quick, taking approximately one hour from Union Station to downtown Hamilton. Now, for heart of the subject, which corresponds to the main challenge of this article: What can you do in Hamilton? Or, formulated more positively, what are the best things to do in Hamilton? I advise you to leave the bus at the terminal station which is closer to downtown Hamilton. From there, you can walk toward Bayfront Park. By walking in this direction, you will cross downtown and its several small old buildings, churches, cute boutiques and

cheap thriftstores. You will pass in front of the “Landed Banking and Loan Company” building located at 47 James Street South, which has an impressive old architectural style. Upon arriving at Bayfront Park, you will discover a pretty park at the water’s edge. There, you will easily find a bench to make a stop and even potentially enjoy a meal while admiring Hamilton Harbour. When you regain full energy again, walk toward the Dundurn stairs. I strongly recommend walking rather than taking the bus because you will cross a few historical neighbourhoods composed of old and rich houses. Among these homes, you can pretend to choose your future house and imagine your future life in Hamilton. Each of them is so huge that I consider them more as manors than houses. I even prefer this neighbourhood to downtown. The architecture is more atypical, old, and the atmosphere of the neighbourhood is more peaceful. When you arrive at the Dundurn stairs, you are surely going to hate me. But I swear to you, the more steps you climb the more beautiful the view will be. From the top of the stairs, you have a beautiful view of the city and forest, which is very picturesque. From there, you can easily access different trails such as the Chedoke Waterfalls Trail where you can, you guessed it, admire different waterfalls. Hamilton is surprisingly famous for its several natural waterfalls, so be sure to see at least one of them. You may be as lucky as I was and see a fox! It is not in the same neighbourhood, but if you still have time to do so, I encourage you to pick up a coffee at the Tim Hortons located at 85 Ottawa Street North. It is the very first Tim Hortons to exist, opened in 1964, and has remained in the very same place since then. Your stop at Tim Hortons would be a cultural activity of sorts too. After this adventurous day, you may be exhausted due to the miles you have walked, but I promise you will not be disappointed!
