Rethinking Leadership: The Quiet Power of Introverts When we picture a leader, many of us instinctively imagine someone charismatic, outspoken, and socially dominant—a natural extrovert. We expect leaders to be masters of accountability, motivation, delegation, and adaptability. We look for traits like integrity, vision, humility, and sound decision-making. Emotional intelligence and active listening are also prized qualities.
Competitive Advantage Through Automation. Introducing Grisley Automation. This Month’s Feature Article. Announcements/Releases.................................6-15 Feature Articles.............................................1,26-27,30 Buyers Guide Equipment..................................33-38
But while we often associate leadership with extroversion, research increasingly suggests that introverts can be just as effective—if not more so—in leadership roles.
Buyers Guide Processes......................................39-45
A study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology found that communication, not extroversion, is the most critical driver of leadership performance. This finding challenges the conventional belief that only outgoing personalities thrive at the top.
Published by:
Introverts, by their nature, tend to be excellent listeners. They bring a thoughtful, deliberate approach to leadership—carefully considering different perspectives before making decisions. They often foster environments where all voices are heard, creating positive, collaborative atmospheres rather than combative ones. Rather than micromanaging, introverted leaders are more inclined to trust their teams, empowering individuals and focusing on the bigger picture. While they may not command a room with loud enthusiasm, they carry a ‘quiet confidence’—an assurance rooted in deep thinking, clarity, and poise. In high-pressure situations, introverts are less reactive and more composed, enabling them to make rational, effective decisions. Their natural empathy makes them attuned to the needs and emotions of others, which can strengthen team morale and cohesion. They tend to prioritize process over impulse, leading to more thoughtful and successful outcomes. Some of history’s most impactful leaders—Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and Abraham Lincoln—are known introverts who led with vision, patience, and wisdom. Furthermore, a survey by Truity Psychometrics revealed that approximately 50% of working professionals identify as introverts. That means many potential leaders may be overlooked simply because they don’t fit the traditional mold. It’s time to broaden our definition of leadership. As organizations continue to evolve, the value of quiet strength, deep thinking, and empathetic communication is becoming increasingly clear. Could your next great leader be the quiet one in the room? Until next issue, I wish you all the best—and God Bless our troops.

FEED THE BEAST
Automation keeps the NHP running. Day and night. Nothing is sweeter than the sound of a spindle making chips, especially when it’s the high-performance spindle found on one of our NHP Series of Compact Horizontal Machining Centers. These workhorses can handle whatever you throw at them, and are always asking for more. That’s where our Linear Pallet System (LPS) comes in. It feeds the NHP around the clock, which leaves nothing but pallets upon pallets of precise, ready-to-ship parts. And if floor space is a concern, the Rotary Pallet System (RPS) will fit right in.

Over the past two years, the Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA) has launched 12 project areas across the state — each one a catalyst for growth, innovation and opportunity. T h e y a re e n g i n e s o f p o s s i b i l i t y, d e s i g n e d to power next-generation manufacturing, connect rural and urban communities to global markets, and deliver good jobs that support communities. In Salt Lake City, Stadler Rail is proving what’s possible. Its expansion is more than a facility — it’s a commitment to Utah’s workforce, a bet on long-term innovation and a blueprint for how publicprivate partnerships can reshape entire industries. In Iron County, BZI’s RailSync facility is already moving millions of pounds of steel and lumber through the state’s first rural inland port. But the real story is what comes next: a 2,500-job innovation park that’s redefining what economic growth can look like in rural Utah. In Box Elder County, Lakeshore Learning Materials is building a massive 1.2 million square foot distribution center and bringing 500+ jobs with it. Why did they choose Utah? Because we offer what the future demands — connectivity, talent and momentum.
I n B e a v e r C o u n t y, Unitech Manufacturing is expanding operations in UIPA’s Mineral Mountains Project Area — the first of what will be many rural investments that blend infrastructure, innovation and local leadership. Across the state, from energy in the Northwest Quadrant to agriculture hubs in Central Utah, a powerful message is ringing out: Utah is not just participating in the global economy — we are shaping it. We are building deliberately. We are acting boldly. We are betting on ourselves — and it’s paying off. Ye s , t h e w o r l d i s u n p re d i c t a b l e . Tr a d e policies shift. Markets fluctuate. But Utah thrives in uncertainty because we think long-term, act with purpose and lead with confidence. This moment isn’t just about seizing opportunity — it’s about creating it. Recycling Metals, Conserving Resources, Since 1961 DARPA picks Colorado companies for special project The U.S. military’s emerging technology arm recently picked three Colorado companies, along with 15 others, to work on a quantum computing project that could earn them millions of dollars. Boulder-based Atom Computing and Oxford Ionics, as well as Broomfield’s Quantinuum, were all chosen to participate in the first stage of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, or QBI. The initiative aims to determine if an industrially useful, cost-effective quantum computer can be built by 2033. According to a PDF shared by DARPA last September, each company selected for stage one could receive up to $1 million. If participants advance through the agency’s three-stage program, they stand to receive hundreds of millions more. Quantum computers operate much faster than any other existing computational technology but are extremely expensive to build. The DARPA project wants a company to build a quantum computer cheaply enough to be worth using. “For the chosen companies, now the real work begins. Stage A is a sixA2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

month sprint in which they’ll provide comprehensive technical details of their concepts to show that they hold water and could plausibly lead to a transformative, fault-tolerant quantum computer in under 10 years,” DARPA QBI Program Manager Joe Altepeter said in a statement. The 18 selected companies will eventually be pared down, though DARPA did not specify exactly how many could make the final cut in its announcement. Those that make it to stage two could receive up to $15 million from DARPA. Advancing to the third stage comes with the possibility of up to $300 million. The current stage is highly conceptual. Each company will present a written abstract and oral presentation describing its technology. Those that make it through this round will submit R&D documents to be tested by an independent verification and validation team. Quantinuum has a U.S. headquarters in Broomfield and European headquarters in Cambridge, England.
The company was formed in 2021 by merging Cambridge Quantum Computing and Honeywell Quantum Solutions. “We are honored to collaborate with DARPA and look forward to working closely with their test and evaluation team as they assess our roadmap and technological approach,” Quantinuum CEO and President Rajeeb Hazra said in a statement. “With our roadmap firmly on track, we are confident in our ability to deliver on DARPA’s objectives for QBI.” Atom Computing is also not entirely local: It is headquartered in Kidlington, England, but opened its first U.S. office in Boulder last year. “Pushing the state-of-the-art of quantum computing to utility scale is an exciting challenge, and it is an incredible honor to be selected to participate in DARPA’s QBI program,” Atom Computing founder and CEO Ben Bloom said. “We are confident that Atom Computing’s technology and roadmap are on track with DARPA’s timeline for achieving utility-scale quantum computing.” Quantum computing has seen massive investment from tech giants such as Google and Microsoft — the latter of which is playing a role in the QBI by providing technical support to Quantinuum and Atom Ionics. Elevate Quantum, a publicprivate consortium of over 120 organizations Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming, was designated a tech hub by the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration in 2023. Most those Phase 2 missions have not yet flown. ULA recently received certification from the Space Force to fly its new Vulcan rocket for national security launches, opening the way to work on billions in Pentagon contracts the company has coming. It’s currently booked for 70 commercial and defense launches, the company told the Denver Business Journal. Colorado startup angles to build the next Air Force One The head of a Centennial startup designing supersonic passenger planes wants to build the next Air Force One and he’s getting the attention of the plane’s most famous passenger. Last month, about 24 hours after Blake Scholl, CEO and founder of Boom Supersonic, watched his company’s test plane successfully break the sound barrier, he received an invitation to the West Wing. Scholl, unabashed about his desire to build the next Air Force One, said he can’t talk about what he might have discussed with President Donald Trump. But there Scholl was, a planemaking entrepreneur with Air Force One’s famously fickle flyer. “Right now, Premier (Xi) Xinping is flying around on the latest model (Boeing) 747-8. The president is flying around on a 747 that’s 2 generations old, the new Air Force One is years behind. I think it’s a national embarrassment that somehow the Chinese premier is flying around a better version of the airplane than what we’ve got, and I think U.S. leaders, most importantly the president, should arrive on the most advanced airplane — certainly the most advanced American-built airplane,” Scholl said. Prying Boeing’s grip from the Air Force One contract awarded in 2018 — for a plane meant to be delivered by 2024, then delayed to 2029 — would be an ambi-
tious goal for any company, let alone one that has yet to fly its own commercial jets. Boom Supersonic’s Overture planes haven’t yet flown. The factory to build them is being set up in Greensboro, North Carolina. Overture is first expected to fly in 2029, the same year Boeing is supposed to deliver the new Air Force One. “We can deliver 10 overture airplanes for what the US government is spending on a single converted Air Force One,” Scholl said. Still, Scholl had an opportunity to make his pitch directly last month. He said he can’t comment on the details of his interaction with Trump. Scholl later posted a photo to his social media account on X, formerly Twitter, showing a smiling president holding a model of Boom’s Overture. The caption? “This administration is supersonic.” President Donald Trump later publicly fl oated the idea of abandoning the $3.9 billion Boeing contract to build the next Air Force One and excoriated Boeing for the delays to reporters, days after Scholl posted the photo. “We may do something else. We may go and buy a plane or get a plane or something,” Trump said. The idea Boom could be in the running to build a plane used for such important flights for the federal government isn’t farfetched. The AFVentures division of the Air Force’s AFWERX program, which

is designed to accelerate development of technologies that could be useful to the military, in 2022 awarded the company $60 million. That came roughly two years after the Air Force and Department of Defense started looking at the company’s supersonic airliner design as a potential executive transport aircraft that could be used by the U.S. president, military leaders, diplomats and possibly in civilian relief functions. Boom Supersonic’s recent test flights demonstrated the company found a way to reach supersonic speeds without the company’s namesake: a sonic boom. Scholl said this generated significant interest in his privately held company given it could open up overland supersonic flights. The company could find itself competing against the federal government for quiet supersonic technology. Lockheed Martin is building its own supersonic plane for NASA: the X-59. It’s scheduled for test flights this year. By Jackson Guilfoil – Denver Business Journal A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •

SLC to Mars? Utah wants to be a hub for space travel. Utah lawmakers want to bring the state’s pioneer heritage to the final frontier and compete to become a hub for future space flights. Sen. Jerry Stevenson, R-Layton, is sponsoring legislation to create a committee to assess the demand for space launches — whether it’s government, private, commercial or military — and produce cost estimates for the construction and operation of a spaceport in Utah. “We’ve been in the space business for quite a while,” Stevenson said. “We are positioned now to do amazing things in space. We have some very tantalizing things before us. We have a great military component, we also have a component in the private sector.” He said that one in five jobs in the state touch in some way on the aerospace industry, and all of the state’s universities are churning out engineers. Stevenson doesn’t envision Utah supplanting Florida, California or Texas as the big players in the space industry, but believes there is a niche that the Beehive State could fill, especially with the frequency of space travel expected to increase. A Senate committee unanimously approved Stevenson’s bill, moving it to a vote by the full Senate. It’s not the first time Utah lawmakers have had stars in their eyes.In the early 1970s, Utah tried to compete with states like California, Florida, New Mexico, Oklahoma and others — 27 sites in all — to be the home of NASA’s planned space shuttle program. Then, as now, Utah officials were pinning their hopes on the fact that it had a piece of the aerospace industry — solid rocket boosters used on missiles were produced here — and it had access to wide open spaces and military sites, according to a history of the 70s spaceport endeavors written by Eric Swedin, a Weber State University history professor. At the time, interest centered mainly on Dugway Proving Ground and the Utah Test and Training Range. Officials felt comfortable that the flights over the then-lesspopulated Wasatch Front did not pose a significant risk. In 1971 the Legislature passed a bill to create a committee to prepare feasibility studies for the proposal, but no funding was provided. Utah promoted the benefits of launching from a higher altitude, which means it would require less thrust to get the shuttles into orbit. But, according to Swedin, when

NASA decided it wanted to use reusable solid rocket boosters to lift the shuttle, it meant there needed to be a place where they could splash down — essentially eliminating Utah from contention. NASA settled on Cape Canaveral, Florida, for the launch site and Edwards Air Force Base in California was the location for the first landing, but later became the backup to the runways at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center.By Robert Gehrke
International space company eyes expansion in Parker The company behind a new 28,000-square-foot factory and testing space for satellite propulsion systems in Parker is opening a facility that gives it the option to grow tenfold to over 200 people. Safran Defense & Space, Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of French multinational aerospace company Safran, plans to employ about 20 to 25 people at the Parker facility, which formally opened April 11. The company intentionally leased a space that dwarfs the current number of employees, anticipating the potential for growth, according to Pier Roviera, President of Safran DSI Space Solutions, which will head the Parker factory and testing space. “This is just the start. If I look at the similar facility on the East Coast, they started with six people. Now they have 220, which is why we chose this building, basically because we can expand three times,” Roviera said.He was referring to Safran’s factory in Rochester, New York. The Parker facility is still being fully assembled and is expected to be fully operational within 18 months, according to Roviera. By the end of 2026, the factory should begin shipping its 600-kilowatt Electric Propulsion System designed to help satellites navigate in space. A portion of the factory working on radio frequency satellite communications is ready to begin work immediately, the company said. Safran’s EPS 600 product is an integrated propulsion system designed for small satellites in lower Earth orbit. It’s meant to serve both commercial and government satellites given the increase in demand for electric propulsion, Roviera said. Last year, the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade offered Safran $371,751 in tax incentives to lure the facility to Parker instead of locating it in Irvine, California. Eve Lieberman, OEDIT’s executive director, lauded the state’s network of aerospace companies, which includes industry titans Lockheed Martin, Blue Origin and RTX. N o r t h e r n Colorado could be home to a new battery manufacturing campus. Colorado officials offered an unnamed battery cell manufacturing company $9.5 million worth of state incentives Thursday to build a $315 million ‘gigafactory’ in Weld County. The company, codenamed “Project Kelly,” is looking to build the first phase of what could be a multiphase campus for the production of lithium and sodium-ion battery cells for grid-scale energy storage, according to the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT). The first phase entails retrofitting a vacant, 392,000 squarefoot industrial building for the gigafactory, OEDIT said. “Project Kelly” was offered $6.1 million in job growth tax credits if it chooses Colorado for the project and creates 337 new jobs over an eight-year period. The incentives were coupled with $3.4 million in additional refundable tax credits using state funding for projects that qualify for the federal Chips and Science Act. The state’s effort to lure a battery facility follows news in March that another battery maker courted by OEDIT — Amprius Technologies Inc. — may pull out of plans to establish its first commercial-scale battery production site in Brighton. The project, which was expected to employ at least 332 people and had leased space and achieved local government permitting for the project, was offered up to $5.4 million in state tax incentives. But the company said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that changes in demand, supply, battery cost structure, government incentives, trade tariffs and more have prompted Amprius to reconsider whether to move forward with construction at the former distribution center it planned to convert into a factory. The EDC also approved a new CHIPS Zone in Louisville, marking another local boundary that will help advanced manufacturing companies access the state’s business tax incentives. Other projects approved The EDC put forth an additional $10.7 million in job growth

Colorado company to become first to refuel Space Force asset
Astroscale U.S. Refueler program manager. “This is infrastructure that expands options for the warfighter and demonstrates what rapid innovation looks like in action.”by: Spencer Kristensen

47G, BETA partner to launch electric aircraft in Utah, US
Astroscale U.S. Inc., a Denver-based on-orbit services and logistics company, will perform two refueling operations of a U.S. Department of Defense satellite that is in geostationary orbit for the United States Space Force, according to a press release from the company. “We’re changing the reality of what’s possible,” said Ron Lopez, president of Astroscale U.S. “This mission proves that in-space logistics does not have to be years away. We’re a focused team with one goal: deliver and operate an operational prototype spacecraft for the Space Force. That’s only possible because of our agile structure, solution-oriented design, close collaboration with Space Systems Command’s Servicing Mobility and Logistics program office, and our incredible team. The Astroscale U.S. Refueler is proof that commercial space companies can develop and deliver new, operational capabilities on time and on budget.” The Astroscale U.S. Refueler is expected to launch in the summer of 2026 and will provide on-orbit services to a warfighter. The servicing will be the first to ever support a DoD asset, while simultaneously becoming the first spacecraft to conduct hydrazine refueling above geostationary orbit, according to the company. The Refueler was designed for maneuverability and is a 300-kilogram spacecraft that will carry a refillable hydrazine tank used in two operations that will enable an end-to-end ecosystem between a client, servicer and depot in space. Astroscale developed the spacecraft by selecting Southwest Research Institute to build the bus and using Orbit Fab’s refueling interfaces. “We’re not just enabling a refueling mission — we’re laying the groundwork for scalable, flexible logistics across space,” said Ian Thomas, A2Z Manufacturing Rocky Mountain •
