Sierra del Mar was one of the first worldclass luxury developments in Puerto Vallarta and Sierra del Mar is credited with raising the standard in the region’s housing market. Meticulously planned, this development became one of the most successful residential communities in our destination due to the careful and innovative harmony between architecture and natural land contours and the tropical landscape.

B
orn July 28, 1951 in Benimámet (Valencia), Calatrava was linked to the design and art since childhood. He was only 13 when participated in a collegial exchange that took him to Paris. Later, before entering the Polytechnic University of Valencia for training in architecture, he took classes at the school of arts of Burjassot. When he was already an architect, he majored in Civil Engineering and Technical Sciences at the ETH Zurich (Switzerland), one of the most recognized universities in the world. In Switzerland he opened his first studio, he began teaching, and made several important works. The fame, however, would come across several bridges that he built in his native Spain.

Huge expenditures, structural failures Critics say that his work tends to be more expensive than the anticipated in the original budgets and maintenance costs are unconscionable. Many also mention that Calatrava’s buildings are very dysfunctional, that he makes beautiful things but are useless. So many wonder if Santiago Calatrava is a true architectural genius or just a marketing expert who knows how to sell his ideas.

In these pages, during our 16 years of life, we have published some of the most emblematic works of Calatrava: the bridge of the Constitution in Venice, the dome of the Chamber of Human Rights of the UN in Geneva (which fell before the grand opening) and the Palace of Arts in Valencia (which has been a real ordeal for local authorities who have sued the architect since 2005 that the work was opened). But these are not the first lawsuit that Santiago Calatrava recieves in his inbox. From Victoria came to him a lawsuit from Bodegas Domecq, which owns the Ysios winery, for the architect and others involved in the building that bear the cost of three million dolar fix, the cover, they said, is leaking and humidity problems. In June 2014, the Valencian architect was sentenced to pay a compensation of 4.5 million dollars for the shortcomings in the implementation of the work of the Palacio de Congresos de Oviedo.

In February 2004, the construction of its modern and huge suspension bridge entrance to Jerusalem was taken to the Supreme Court by residents protesting for the passage of a train. The building known as’ Bridge of the Constitution “of Venice was mired in controversy since the beginning of the project, especially because of its high cost. The Court of Auditors judges the Spanish architect and argues that he overcharged by about 4 million euros on that bridge. And also from the Netherlands he has received claims. A council demanded last August to the City Council to take action against Calatrava, who commissioned three bridges, according to this policy, oxidized year it opened and caused costs to 70 million.
USA Despite all the problems and judgments that brings on their backs the Spanish architect, the city of New York commissioned him to design the new train station of the World Trade Center. In New York put their hands to the head after The New York Times reported this past January, that the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, which connects the Big Apple with New Jersey, will cost a total of about 4,000 million, almost the double than initially planned. que una estación de tren, detalla los numerosos sobrecostos y retrasos que ha ido acumulando el proyecto, que se presentó en el 2004 y que, si se cumplen las actuales previsiones, se inaugurará a finales del 2015.

Despite the known data now, the new World Trade Center station, called to be a symbol of the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan after the attacks of September 11/ 2001, it was involved almost from the beginning in the controversy. The train station to Ground Zero in New York area has become one of the biggest “fiascos” in the career of the Spanish arquitect and qualifies the local press, that he is about to completely destroy his prestige. Since in 2009 the New York Times pointed their batteries against him, critics have been happening regularly in the New York press and have become particularly acidic in recent months as it approaches the end of the work in the Zero Zone. Basically because almost all buildings are finished except his own. His detractors have no ideological color.

del World Trade Center”.
100% regardless of the purpose memorial and trade of the World Trade Center “. To Cuozzo Station is now little more than a “Stegosaurus”, “sterile and intimidating” and warns that the floor of marble panels in form of parallelogram costs “a fortune to maintain.” The criticisms of the New York Post recently continued with an article in the conservative Wall Street Journal, where the journalist Elliot Brown released early last month an extensive article in which he explained the delays and cost overruns that have occurred in the work, it has passed a budget of nearly 2,000 million to more than 4,000. While handing out the faults of this disproportionate increase of 100%, identified as primarily responsible the architect not hesitate to describe the station as “shame of public works”. Now, the Spanish has a black spot on his list in New York. But since we dont gain experience from somebody elses head, the Greek Orthodox Church in New York just entrust Calatrava the rebuilding of the St. Nicholas Church in the World Trade Center The old church which stood next to the Twin Towers in New York was destroyed in the September 11 attacks and will be rebuilt with a design of Spanish, is planned for completion between 2016 and 2017. The project was blessed the first week of January in a religious ceremony attended by local authorities. No doubt they will need divine help if they want to end, smoothly, their new church.

3 lugares para vivir el sueño de la jubilación 3 Places To Live The American Retirement Dream Overseas
T
P
erhaps you like the idea of stretching your retirement dollars as far as possible (who doesn’t?) and reducing your cost of living and of health care, while at the same time enriching and enhancing your quality of life, but you’re not up for learning a new language or putting up with the day-to-day challenges and frustrations of life in the developing world. Fair enough. “Going local,” as it were, in a new life overseas, isn’t for everyone. That doesn’t have to mean that you have to give up on the idea of enjoying the benefits of retiring to a new country. In a handful of places that have emerged in recent years as top expat havens, it’s possible to enjoy many of the advantages of being retired overseas without having to cross over to what could be called a “local” lifestyle. These are places where the American lifestyle has been exported and where the dayto-day living probably resembles in many ways what you left behind back home. Here are three top choices for exporting the American Dream with you when you retire overseas, three places where sizable communities of foreign, mostly American, retirees have established themselves and are rapidly expanding. Living in one of these three places, you could enjoy affordable and top-quality health care, an affordable cost of living, and the adventure of starting over somewhere new, but you wouldn’t have to learn to speak Spanish if you didn’t want to and the culture shock would be very controlled.

Boquete, Panama
Some 3,000 foreigners live in this colorful mountain town, and migration continues. The number of foreign residents in Boquete is expected to increase to 10,000 by 2016. What’s the attraction? Beautiful setting, good climate, straightforward pensionado rules (for all Panama), yes, but, mostly, the draw in Boquete is the establis-
hed gringo community. This town has been referred to as Panama’s “Gringoland.” In one private, gated, residential community in this region, amenities include a golf course, stables, and a small central town created specifically for foreign residents. Construction, for both the shared amenities and the individual homes, is to U.S. standards and with U.S.-style finished, fixtures, and fittings. In Boquete town proper, shops and services catering to the evergrowing foreign retiree population continue to open. In the U.S.-style restaurants serving American-style menus (featuring fried eggs for breakfast and cheeseburgers for lunch), you’ll hear all-English conversation at the tables around you and all-American music on the speakers. You could start your day with gourmet coffee served by a smiling, friendly clerk accustomed to serving English-speaking customers, and you could play bridge on Thursday nights and go golfing every Sunday morning, all, again, in the company of new, like-minded, and English-speaking friends. San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belice
San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize
Ambergris Caye has what a lot of North American retirees are looking for right now, making it another of the most turn-key and user-friendly places in the world to retire overseas. For many, the retirement dream is all about the Caribbean. If your retirement fantasies are similarly aquamarine and sandy, take a look at what Ambergris has to offer. The diving and snorkeling, the color and clarity of the water, and the abundance and variety of the sea life here are hard to beat. This is quintessential Caribbean that is also increasingly supported by the comforts of home many retirees appreciate, from a health club to bagel shops, ice cream parlors, and regular wine tastings.
Kathleen Peddicord
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Mexico is a big place with a bad reputation. The reputation isn’t altogether undeserved, as drug cartels do control parts of this country but not all of it, and some of the most appealing regions for both living and investing sit outside the war zones. Mexico offers two long coasts, mountain towns, and colonial cities, plus Mayan ruins, jungle, rain forest, rivers, and lakes. It’s also the most accessible “overseas” haven from the United States. You could drive back and forth if you wanted. For all these reasons, Mexico is home to the biggest established populations of American retirees in the world, making it a great choice if you seek adventure with the comforts of home. Each of the several spots that expat retirees have targeted
in this country offers a different lifestyle. Puerto Vallarta is the place to go for what could be described as luxury coastal living. Puerto Vallarta is more expensive than other places where you might consider living or retiring overseas, but in Puerto Vallarta that’s not the point. This isn’t developing-world living. This stretch of Mexico’s Pacific coastline has already been developed to a high level. Life here can be not only comfortable but easy and fully appointed. In Puerto Vallarta, you aren’t buying for someday, as you can be in many coastal destinations in Central America. In Puerto Vallarta, you can buy a worldclass lifestyle in a region with world-class beaches and ocean views that is supported, right now, by world-class golf courses, marinas, restaurants, and shopping. This is a lifestyle that is available only on a limited basis worldwide, a lifestyle that is truly (not metaphorically) comparable to the best you could enjoy in southern California if you could afford it. In Puerto Vallarta you can afford it even on an average retirement budget. You could buy a small apartment outside Puerto Vallarta town for less than $100,000, or you could buy big and fancy for $1 million-plus. Whatever you buy, you could rent it out when you’re not using it. The Puerto Vallarta region, including the emerging Riviera Nayarit that runs north from it along the coast, is an active tourist rental market with a track record.

provide pattern and interest. Of course, not all digital art serves as just a background to other types of action. Some digital art There’s another rendition of the digital art trend that has made it into many homes. Many people are making use of their television screens as art pieces. Here’s how it works: You frame a television and get software to display a digitized image on the screen when the television is not in use. Another version of this idea is to use a TV backboard of plexiglass with LED lights to create an artsy feel, as seen above. But despite the digital trend, we predict that conventional painting and drawing isn’t going anywhere soon. Many of us could never give up the handmade and personal feel that old fashioned oil or acrylic on canvas offers. Ipads and Iphones as toddlers are now making their imprint in the world of art. Are you curious to see how people are incorporating digital art into their homes? Let’s take a look The great thing about digital art is that it is perfect for humid environments such as bathrooms and kitchens. It’s a clever way to add color and interest in places that are not ideal for hanging more delicate paintings or drawings. Prints on glass can be easily cleaned with a damp sponge and will retain their luster and beauty despite weathering some tough conditions. That being said, digital art on glass is also used in other types of environments to
