PREFACE in a short time since the establishment of diplomatic relations on May 20, 2002, Timor-Leste and the United States have embarked on a remarkable journey of camaraderie and friendship over the past twenty years. The friendship is rooted in the shared commitment to the development of our peoples and our nations, with our actions informed by the core shared values consecrated in our respective national constitutions, namely democracy, freedom, and basic human rights. Emerging from the tragic hardships of history, both nations today share a fundamental commitment to the rules-based international order that benefits all countries.

The friendship underpinning our relationship has spurred a voyage of increasing partnership – and one that is delivering opportunities. The considerable development of our relationship into a robust partnership was underscored during the 9th anniversary of bilateral relations in 2011 with the launching of the Timor-Leste’s Strategic Development Plan by the Palacio do Governo. This, and other milestones like it, is a testament of how we have journeyed together through the challenges of Timor-Leste’s reconstruction as a nation and the building of it as a country with many friendships. As illustrated by selected pictures from certain events along our path, herein printed to illustrate this journey and its progress. Ours is ultimately a partnership in motion with universal values of peace, stability, and global prosperity as our ultimate aspiration. As we look back to celebrate the last 20 years, we also look ahead to imagine what our partnership can become over the next 20 years and beyond. We are confident that our two democracies will only continue to deliver positive results and opportunities to all of our citizens. Happy 20th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations, and may the next 20 years be even brighter !
