RECREATION COMMISSION The Woodhaven Recreation Commission is an advisory board that meets on the third Monday of the month. The commission supports the City Council and the residents with the development and maintenance of quality parks and facilities; promotes stewardship of open/natural areas; creates and coordinates recreational opportunities that encourage citizen involvement; and fosters a strong sense of community while enhancing the social, cultural and physical well-being of residents and visitors of all ages.

WE ARE WARRIOR STRONG
I want to take this time to update you on what is going on in the City of Woodhaven. It has been a rough few years with COVID, but we have tried hard to be very active in helping our residents cope with this pandemic. We have kept our senior transportation running throughout the entire pandemic. We have reached out to our seniors who live alone by checking on them with phone calls on a consistent basis. We have done as much as any city could do in a pandemic. We want our residents to know that they are never alone here in the City of Woodhaven. We recently constructed a COVID memorial with grant money from Wayne County for our loved ones whom we have lost. If you have not seen it, it can be found right behind our City Hall Building on Hall Road. As many of you are aware, we continue to conduct street repair and road construction throughout the city. On behalf of the city, thank you for voting for the street-repair program. We will continue to work on this project once again when the weather permits. Please keep in mind that there are 37 miles of roads in the city, and we are trying to get to every subdivision as fast as we can and to repair as much as we are able. For those of you who have asked about Uncle Sam Jam, we are planning on its return the second weekend in July as long as it is permitted and in compliance with the COVID CDC guidelines. Last July, we conducted an online poll of 1,128 Woodhaven residents on whether they were for or against bringing back Uncle Sam Jam, and 67% were in favor of its return. For your safety, there is an Internet exchange zone located in the Woodhaven Police parking lot for online exchanges and purchases. If you are having any issues or concerns, please do not hesitate to call me at 734-362-2920. My Best Always,

Musical Theatre Dance Camp
Summer Theatre Camps
Students will learn a new musical theatre dance each day from a wide variety of shows, culminating in a showcase of what they learned at the end of camp, and a popsicle dance party.

NOTE: Reading of Shurtleff's “Audition” encouraged. Viola and her twin brother Sebastian have been shipwrecked, and she believes he has drowned. Viola disguises herself as a young man named Cesario and gets a job as a servant for the Duke, Orsino. Orsino is in love with Olivia, but she's not interested. He sends Cesario (who is really Viola) with love letters to woo Olivia on his behalf. Unfortunately for the Duke, Olivia falls in love with Cesario (Viola). But Viola (Cesario) has fallen in love with Orsino. So, Viola (Cesario) loves Orsino, Orsino loves Olivia, and Olivia loves Cesario (Viola), Malvolio loves Olivia, and the captain might love Sebastian- or does Olivia love Sebastian? Wait, Sebastian is alive? Ok, things get a little wacky in this play. NOTE: Camp will conclude in an hour-long outdoor performance of the play “Twelfth Night” by William Shakespeare. Days

How to Nail the Auditions Analyze how to make the most of every audition by breaking it down into three important parts: Pre-Audition, During Audition, and Post-Audition. Focus is on the application of M.I.R.A.C.L.E., a method of performance that riffs off of Michael Shurtleff’s twelve guideposts. This course can be easily adjusted for audiences anywhere between 6th grade-college level, beginner to advanced. It can be taught over the course of one “crash course” or multiple unique, in-depth workshops with opportunity to apply and develop application of course concepts. Safety Town
Robot Academy – Mad Science
Safety Town is an educational program for children entering Kindergarten to learn safe ways to approach school and everyday situations. The children are taught the basics of fire, water, traffic, playground and pet safety, as well as poison control, bus behavior and seatbelt importance. This program is administered by the Woodhaven Police Department.
Welcome to the Mad Science Robot Lab! Join us for a week of fun as we experiment with our entire Mad Science Robot fleet! We will learn about the many uses of robots around the world as we explore the exciting field of robotics. We’ll also discover the science of circuits and how robots use sensors to explore things around them. We will also spend time learning about coding concepts, engineering principles and basic robotics. Our camp will provide a great mix of fun, and education as we strive to create a positive, supportive learning environment where kids feel comfortable working in groups and are encouraged to learn new things.

Calisthenics Fitness Camp (DGJP Training Camp) This camp is a family friendly non-judgement youth fitness camp for kids. We will offer one adult session a week as well (High School & older). This camp is structured in a way to give kids/young adults a fun way to stay active and a healthy lifestyle. We develop confidence through hard work and discipline. This camp will have calisthenics based workouts where the drills will involve workouts using strictly your bodyweight. The Woodhaven Parks & Recreation Department is offering a Cross Country running program for Woodhaven-Brownstown School District youth in grades 1st through 5th. The program provides training, education and healthy competition in a fun and safe environment! Our experienced coach and program volunteers are dedicated to helping participants of all ability levels reach their goals. The coaching staff will instruct participants in the areas of training techniques, diet, and running form in addition to distance training runs in preparation of the upcoming Cross Country season meets.

Certified Babysitting/CPR/First Aid & Safe Home Alone Course Learn to be safe and responsible, build confidence, and have a competitive edge over other babysitters. Topics include: first aid, when and how to call 911, CPR with manikin practice, choking, dealing with difficult behaviors, basic care methods like feeding and diapering, marketing and much more! Students will also learn how to be safe and responsible when home alone, including the importance of not giving out personal information and what to do if somebody comes to the door. City of Woodhaven Parks & Recreation • Learn To Swim Program 2022 Welcome to the Woodhaven Swim Program. All of our swim classes are taught by highly trained and/or certified water safety instructors. We use the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program to provide the highest quality instruction.
Parent-Child Aquatics
LEVEL 3 - Stroke Development
American Red Cross Parent-Tot Aquatics familiarizes young children to the water and prepares them to learn to swim. This course gives parents safety information and teaches techniques to help orient their children to water.

Cardio Drumming & Toning Cardio Drumming is a full body workout. We move to the rhythm of music using drum sticks, yoga ball and a bucket. We will also focus on toning using light hand weights. If you are a Woodhaven resident, and 62 or older, there is a world of opportunity waiting for you at the Community Center! You can join the Woodhaven Senior Club, which has a wide variety of activities to choose from. Bocce Ball or Cornhole, Mondays at 9:30 a.m.; Lunch Bunch outing one Monday per month; card games every Tuesday; Bingo on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays as well as on the 2nd and 4th
Wednesdays; also enjoy Bunco, Euchre, and board games throughout the week - see our monthly calendar for dates and times. A “Movie Day” is held one Friday per month at the Center as well. Senior Club Business Meeting is on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, and the Senior Social catered luncheon is on the 4th Wednesday of each month. Outside of the scheduled events listed above, you can enjoy many other travel excursions and activities that change in variety each month, such as: Plays, Casino Trips, Museums, Tours, Dinners, Movies, Feather Bowling, winery visits, ice cream shops, and the list goes on, and on! We even have our own 23 passenger bus which is utilized for our excursions, and it helps keep costs down. Trips and new activities are announced at the Business Meeting each month and are open to the Club members for 2 weeks. If the trip has not filled up in those 2 weeks, it is then opened to the public. Don’t miss out on these wonderful opportunities to meet new friends and experience new adventures! Exercise videos are easy to follow, specifically designed for the active, older adults. Participants experience an exciting hour of calorie burning and energizing movements.

Woodhaven on Wheels is a curb-to-curb transportation service, providing a means of transportation for senior citizens and residents who are unable to drive for medical reasons. Service is offered Monday thru Thursday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Eligible to residents age 62 or older and if under age 62 with disability and unable to drive due to medical reasons.

For National Reading Month, [TAG] Brownstown Middle School student Damian Anderson won the opportunity to speak with [TAG] Pam Muñoz Ryan, author of the book Esperanza Rising. To enter the competition, students were asked to submit one question they would like to ask the author. Damian asked, “When did you know you wanted to be a writer?” Keep up the good work, Damian!
n Three 8-year-old girls enrolled at Yake Elementary School made history last month by competing in an all-girls division at the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association 2022 State Playoffs. In past years, Mayzie Simpson, Eastyn Coutoure and Alba Bannon had to play on co-ed teams because there were no teams specifically for girls. Though they didn’t take home the gold, the girls played their hearts out and their names went down in history. Please join us in congratulating Mayzie, Eastyn and Alba!
n Congratulations to the [TAG] Woodhaven High School Quiz Bowl team for winning the Quiz Bowl Conference Tournament. The team beat Carlson 8-1 and are headed to the National Academic Quiz Tournament, which will be held virtually on April 9th.
