Almost a year after starting his own marine detailing business with his wife Amee, Dillon Jones is excited to bring his business and family to his hometown, Grosse Ile

Recently docked in Grosse Ile, The Nauti Dog is a professional marine detailing company that provides maintenance, cleaning, and storage solutions for boat owners in the downriver area. Dillon Jones founded the company with his wife Amee in the summer of 2022 in Monroe, Michigan. Almost a year after starting, the business is now setting sail to Jones’s hometown.

“Cleaning boats keeps me around the water, and I can bring my family,” shared Jones, who first started marine detailing at age 10.

“It’s just something I’m passionate about. I like cleaning the boats. It’s a labor of love… So, it’s been exciting to get back into Grosse Ile, see everyone again, and meet new clients.”

Husband and wife team offers ‘food that makes you feel good’

Sully’s Barbecue is a home away from home for locals and visitors alike. It is a place where family, friends, and neighbors gather to make unforgettable memories surrounded by good people and great food. It is no wonder Sully’s is the talk of the town.

Husband and wife duo Marvin and Lynn found themselves having a significant conversation in the spring of 2020 that inevitably led them down an uncharted path that changed their lives for the better. As members of the community, Lynn and Marvin believed something important was missing.

“The idea was my husband’s. We realized that the island was somewhat limited when it came to food options, and after some conversation, he was like, ‘We should open a barbeque restaurant right here on Grosse Ile,’” explains Lynn. “Fast forward, we opened Sully’s in May of 2020.”

Because they accomplished a successful launch at the height of the Pandemic, doing so speaks volumes of their tenacity. According to Lynn, Sully’s success can be directly attributed to the support of their dedicated family and friends, especially that of Marvin’s mother, affectionately referred to as “Ma”.

Lynn proudly describes the atmosphere as a family affair. “Our restaurant is ‘soft and easy’. Even though we have a full bar, when you walk inside one of the first things you’ll hear is the jazz playing in the background.” Last year the restaurant started offering Open Mic Wednesdays on the breezeway and are looking to continue it this spring and summer. “It was beautiful seeing people eat and enjoy music.”

If you’re wondering how to try the whole menu, Lynn says, “We do have specials, and are updating our menu to include special items on certain days of the week.”

Sully’s will continue to be a home away from home for those near and far especially since they are known for good food, an easygoing atmosphere, popular food items, and an all-around familyoriented establishment run by a dedicated husband and wife team.

“We know most of our customers by their first names as well as they know our names. Our food might be categorized as ‘soul food’. There isn’t anything fancy about our food items, it’s just simply good home-cooked food. Food that makes you feel good.” ◆

In terms of food, Sully’s impresses there as well. With most menu items cooked to order and in high demand, it’s not uncommon for certain items to sell out. For example, this past St. Patrick’s Day, Sully’s served corned beef and cabbage for the third year in a row and sold out.

“There are some days when we completely sell out of chicken sandwiches and wing dings. Then there are the days when all we are cooking is catfish. On other days we are making nothing but pulled pork sandwiches and our love bowls. There are also the days when we walk in and all the ribs, both St Louis and our baby backs, have already been sold via the online service.” Slow-cooked and dipped in a homemade sauce, Sully’s ribs are a patron favorite along with the fresh collard greens, mac-n-cheese, and baked beans.

“I love working with that machine,” said Vail. “What separates this esthetics tool from the rest of traditional steamers is the ability to mix customized tonics. The spray is not evaporation; it is formed by atomization with a spray that is cooler than traditional steam and therefore useful in treating skin conditions where steam is not recommended… like Lupis.”

The Pulvériser is only manufactured in Paris, which doesn’t leave many options for patients in the Detroit area. With some of the closest similar oncology serv-

ices being as far as Novi, Kalamazoo, and Grand Rapids, Vail recognized that many people couldn’t get the treatment they desperately needed.

According to Vail, some patients with auto-immune conditions couldn’t safely drive to their appointments. Other appointments had to be cut short because of how fatigued patients were from traveling. This limited market for muchneeded health services was a major deciding factor for Vail opening her spa with the Pulvériser machine in Riverview.

“There are very few people in this world that cancer has not touched in one capacity or another,” Vail shared. “I learned very early on how to care for someone who was going through treatment and what they experience. Because of my experience with this, I can better

understand my clients’ feelings and anticipate their skincare needs… When they come in for services, I am able to give them compassion, love, empathy, and my fierce support.”

Avalon Day Spa is now the only oncology institution Downriver able to offer these high-level services, but that may not be for long. Vail’s son, John, is currently apprenticing under both her and Morag Currin, director and owner of Oncology Training International. John hopes to open another oncology spa Downriver after his training. “If you get an oil or gas leak, radiator fluid, or anything like that from a car, if you don’t have sealer on your driveway, those fluids will immediately start eating the asphalt away,” Meyers cautioned. Investing in sealcoat can save money long-term.

Furtah said that holiday lighting is a “big deal” for the company and its most recognized service from a visual standpoint. He added that the company enjoys a high retention rate for the service and gets anywhere from 15 to 30 new clients requesting it each year.

Furtah and his business partner Gregory Faverio Jr. purchased the company in 2007. It was just a modest sprinkler service-only business when they bought it. Under Furtah and Faverio’s ownership, the business has flourished. Its customer base has expanded exponentially, and several new services have been added.

The company currently has a few thousand clients and serves 20-plus areas, including Lincoln Park, Grosse Ile, Gibraltar, Flat Rock, New Boston, and Monroe.

In January of 2022, they relocated the company from Trenton to a bigger space in Wyandotte.

“We were kind of bursting at the seams,” said Furtah. “So it was time to move. We were at the other location for 10 years. It was awesome. We loved it, but we just needed more room.”

They are planning a grand opening for the new location in October, according to Furtah. He said that one of his key goals for the company is to be “accessible” and “do our best to communicate with everybody.” ◆

“We started with just house cleaning, and then we added office cleaning,” she said. “And when my husband came on in 2020 we started doing carpet and area rugs, tile and grout, upholstery and air duct cleaning.” Today, the thriving business also offers furniture and vehicle inte-

rior cleaning. And all of Green’s cleaning technicians are certified.

Makayla also explains how Green’s provides her the opportunity to give back to the community, something that is “very, very important to me and my company.”

One of the ways in which Green’s gives back is through a partnership with Cleaning for a Reason, a nonprofit organization that offers cancer patients free house cleaning throughout the U.S. and Canada.

“What the company does is gives two consecutive free cleanings for people who either have a child who has cancer or they have cancer themselves,” Makayla noted.

Don’t fret…spring is in full swing, and not only is it time to transition your wardrobe but your skin as well!

Good-bye to that cold, dry, air that wrecked havoc on our skin over the winter, and hello to that sprinkle of moisture that only Springtime can bring. However, when it comes to humidity aiding in skin hydration, we are not out of the woods quite yet. It won’t be until the height of summer when there is enough moisture in the air to give us the hydration that our skin craves. Our skin loves moisture for many reasons, but the most important is, it allows us to maintain a healthy skin barrier and prevent Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL). By not properly hydrating the skin and giving it the nourishment it needs, our barrier wall begins to breakdown and so does our collagen and elastin.

WHAT IS TRANSEPIDERMAL WATER LOSS?

In a nutshell, TEWL is when the skin is being depleted of hydration at a faster rate than it is being replenished. As the skin becomes dehydrated, the barrier wall is compromised, which accelerates TEWL and the pre-mature aging process. Though TEWL can happen naturally as we age, there are environmental contributors, such as

dry-frigid air, central heat, air conditioning, over-cleansing, over-exfoliating, not using the appropriate products for your skin type, using poor-quality products, extreme sun exposure, medications, and of course, the one we all struggle with, not drinking enough water.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM EXPERIENCING TRANSEPIDERMAL WATER LOSS?

Classic signs of TEWL is increased visibility of fine lines + wrinkles, tightness, flaking, rough texture, discomfort, drydull skin (face + body), and being unusually thirsty to name a few. However, after a long winter, it is normal to experience some degree of TEWL, but there are steps you can take to reverse dermal dehydration and achieve healthy, glowing skin again.

Elected by the membership, McCarthy served as Rear Commodore in 2021 and Vice Commodore in 2022.

GIYC is in the process of rebuilding the marina and will soon feature floating docks. It’s also offering a limited 2-year dock rate reduction for new members, at $28/foot.

Cullen noted the Club has a new membership chairman, Robert Parker, and talented Chef Martin Suarez will be on deck for a second season. She encourages prospective members to “Come on down and try the great food!”

After decades in the business, E. Ann Redfield has no plans to leave real estate. “I don’t sit well at all,” said the broker/owner of Century 21 Riverpointe.

Since trusting the daily operations of the business to her two daughters, Redfield has no worries. “I can take vacations because I know that everything is taken care of here,” Redfield added. “My idea of retirement is I can take off whenever I choose, and still be connected by internet and phone."
