Probus Art Exhibition
P
ROBUS Art Exhibition is a biennial celebration of talented local artists, organised and run entirely by volunteers. Over the years it has grown and flourished, and now includes drawing, painting, photography, wood carving, wood turning, ceramics, textiles and glass. This year was another fantastic event, beginning with the traditional open evening and ending with the amazing Mevagissey Male Choir on the Sunday evening. A huge thank you to all the artists who submitted their work, and especially to Dave Handcock for generously donating one of his paintings of the ‘Coming Home’ trees for our silent

auction, which raised £350 for the church (details of the full amount raised will be announced at a later date). Thanks, as always, to Chris our Curator; Neil for once again painting all 19 exhibition boards white (twice!); Dave for being ‘front of house’ during the open evening; all our incredible volunteers;the church hospitality team with Isobel and Julie, for ensuring that refreshments were available throughout the whole event; all those who donated prizes for our raffle; and, last but not least, to Graham from the Hawkins Arms for opening our event and to Andy, Cliff and Ken for erecting all the boards. UGE congratulations to the Probus Fun Week organisers and volunteers – what an amazing week we’ve just had! But, as the saying goes, ‘there’s no rest for the wicked’! It won’t be long before the committee needs to start thinking about Fun Week 2027 and they’d love to hear from anyone who’d like to get involved. Turn to page 35 for more information. Although Fun Week dominates this edition of Probus News, there’s always lots going on in the village. Breaking news: Probus post office Just as we were about to go to press, we found out that the post office in the filling station shop will be closed from Thursday 27th August until further notice. It will re-open as soon as possible under the new owners and the date will be announced as soon as it has been confirmed withe the Post Office.

Mevagissey Male Choir at Probus Church
A
SPLENDID evening of music was enjoyed in Probus Church on Sunday 26th July when the Mevagissey Male Choir entertained a large audience with a varied programme of 14 songs. Under the direction of Jimmy Cannon, accompanied by Matt Fox, and with Set 2 conducted by Mike Thompson, the choir demonstrated its musical versatility and rich harmony. The programme ranged from traditional favourites to contemporary classics, including stirring performances of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’, ‘Stars’ from Les Misérables, and Puccini’s ‘Nessun Dorma’. Three popular classics were beautifully sung by 16-year-old soloist Lillymae Madeley, who made her debut before an audience with ‘Valerie’ (Zutons and Amy Winehouse), ‘Budapest’ (George Ezra) and ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ (Elvis). The choir’s powerful voices, excellent musicianship and relaxed presentation made for an enjoyable evening, rewarded with warm applause throughout.
A chance to sing in Truro Cathedral
W
OULD you like to join the ‘Beethoven 200’ – that’s 200 voices celebrating 200 years since the death of the great composer – to sing in the Cathedral in April 2027? St Austell Choral Society will be joining forces with our sister societies from Truro and Helston on Saturday 24th April for this exciting occasion – a rare chance to sing in this wonderful building, accompanied by full orchestra and professional soloists. The programme will include Beethoven’s Mass in C and Choral Fantasia, along with some well-known favourites. In order to be sure of a place for this event (as numbers will be restricted), why not join the Society this September? We do not audition; instead, we invite keen singers to join us for a couple of rehearsals before deciding to become members. An ability to sight-read music is not required, although a basic level is useful. We will be putting on two concerts locally before Christmas, and then preparing for the big occasion. If you’d like to give us a try, get in touch via the Contact Us page on our website www.staustellchoralsociety.co.uk and put Friday 11th September (7–7:15 pm, ready for a 7:30 pm start) in your diary. This will be an open rehearsal to kick off our new season and a perfect opportunity to try us out. All voices welcome (though tenors and basses especially so!). Please make them the highest resolution you can (you may need to change the camera settings on your phone) and send to editorprobusnews@gmail.com by 10th September. To give you a helping hand, Probus News photographer Jon Hibberd has put together a few useful tips: - Avoid cluttered backgrounds, unless they’re an important part of the story you want to tell. Something like a wall in a neutral colour or an outdoor setting can work well. - Don’t position the child in front of a window, as your camera may find it hard to balance the light sources and your portrait may be underexposed. - Look at what’s immediately behind the child! You’d be amazed how often people take a potentially great shot only to find that it looks as if a lamppost or a tree is growing out of their subject’s head! - Crouch down when you take the photo so that you’re at the child’s eye level. If you’re looking down, it can distort the perspective so that the child’s head looks unnaturally large. - Decide whether you want a headand-shoulders shot, a full-length portrait or something in between. - Above all, make it fun! Get them to smile or give you a cheeky grin or a wave!

Probus Historic Cornwall Society
P
ROBUS Historic Cornwall Society begins its 2026/27 season on Monday 14th September with a talk by Sam Galsworthy, owner of Trewithen, on the history of the gardens and the impact of Storm Goretti. The gardens are world renowned and every plant tells a tale: the camellia first brought to Europe in the satchel of a roaming plant hunter; the South Australian tree ferns shipped as ballast in the belly of a clipper vessel; the Champion Trees nurtured from seed by Trewithen’s own gardeners. As the tenth successive generation to own the estate since it was bought by Philip Hawkins in 1715, no one is better placed than Sam to talk about its history.

Members also receive the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies’ twice-yearly journal, Kernow Goth, which features articles on Cornish history, archaeology, and local heritage, as well as regular updates about events taking place throughout Cornwall. Meetings are held in the village hall on the second Monday of every month from September to April, starting at 7:30 pm. Non-members are also welcome to attend – £3.50 on the door.

louded Yellow butterflies have historically been an occasional visitor to Britain. Unlike many of our familiar resident butterflies, Clouded Yellows are largely migrant butterflies, arriving from continental Europe when conditions allow them to make the journey across the Channel. They aren’t a new arrival to Britain. In fact, spectacular influxes have occurred in the past, including the famous ‘Great Clouded Yellow Year’ of 1877. But their numbers can vary enormously from one year to the next. This year, however, I’ve found myself noticing them much more frequently

This butterfly’s numbers are heavily influenced by conditions across Europe and Britain, with warm weather and favourable winds helping migrants reach our shores. Once here, warm conditions can also allow them to remain active and potentially produce further generations. Britain’s winters have usually limited the ability of Clouded Yellows to survive here year-round. However, with our climate becoming warmer, there have already been occasional reports of individuals surviving through milder winters, particularly in sheltered parts of southern Britain.
That doesn’t mean the Clouded Yellow is suddenly becoming a resident species. But seeing them in such great numbers this year does make me wonder how climate change will impact our view on current migratory and resident species’ future status. At almost exactly the same time as I’ve been noticing more Clouded Yellows, many people have also mentioned the lack of wasps we are seeing this year. Usually by this point in summer, wasps are hard to ignore. They appear around bins, gardens and outdoor lunches, and their familiar buzzing seems to become part of the background noise of August.

Wasps aren’t simply the insects we complain about when they land on our drinks. They are important predators, and social wasps catch enormous quantities of other insects to feed their developing larvae. Flies are among their prey. So, could fewer wasps mean more flies? If there are fewer predatory wasps, there could potentially be less pressure on flies and other insects. Fly populations are also heavily influenced by temperature, rainfall, food availability and the availability of places to breed. A lack of wasps could also mean a change in pollination. Adult wasps visit flowers for nectar and can transfer pollen between plants. They aren’t generally as important as bees for pollination, but they form part of a much wider and more diverse pollinator community. So an absence in wasps could have consequences extending beyond the picnic table, which is precisely why recording the wildlife we see matters. HAT a lot of great events were packed into just seven days! As well as many of the perennial favourites (it’s a Knockout, Probus Got Talent, the waterslide, the pub vs club quiz and, of course, the carnival procession), this year also saw the début performance of the newly formed Probus Fun Week Band (pictured below). The Carnival Royalty for 2026 were Sea Queen Amelie and her Sea Princess attendants Skye (left) and (centre) Lexie (right). We could have filled the magazine several times over with photos, but here’s a look back at some of the week’s many highlights.

Big screen hangout
F
OR the first time ever we had an open-air cinema in Probus, with an afternoon showing of Zootopia 2 and an evening screening of The Greatest Showman. The evening coincided with a deep solar eclipse, with around 95% coverage here in Cornwall, and the high vantage point of the Fun Week field made it a great viewing spot. Special eclipse viewing glasses were on sale, although some spectators preferred to use their own state-of-the art devices...

It’s a knockout!
O
N the last day of Fun Week, It’s a Knockout featured highly competitve teams battling it out in a range of challenges, including team ski-ing, frisbee, tug of war and welly wanging – with, it must be said, varying degrees of success. Apparently the men’s world record for welly wanging, set in 1996, is 63.98 metres, so it’s probably safe to say the Fun Week committee won’t be getting in touch with Guinness World Records any time soon.

Dave’s big splash!
T
HE waterslide is always hugely popular, but this year it had a really special particpant – octogenarian Dave Handcock, who went down (twice!) to raise money for Fun Week and raised more than £300 in the process. When asked by Probus News what he was planning for his next challenge, Dave informed us that he’s going to abseil down the church tower. (We think he was joking, but you never know...)
Probus got talent
T
HE Fun Week marquee was packed for this show of local talent, with 15 acts taking to the stage. These included dog tricks; songs from Disney films Moana and The Jungle Book; pop classics (including a hilarious medley by the Icons Show); ‘Messy Doormat’ (a spoof on Puccini’s ‘Nessun Dorma’); The Probus Mermaids performing a routine to music from Swan Lake; and a choir singing (what else?) ‘Cornwall my Home’. The winners, with 19% of the total audience vote, were The Gym Bros, Johnny and Jack. Congratulations to everyone who took part; it’s not easy to stand up and perform in front of so many people, but you did yourselves (and Probus) proud.

Carnival procession IT’S always amazing to see how much effort and creativity people put into their carnival costumes and every single person threw themselves into the spirit of the occasion. This year, a particular shout-out goes to the families celebrating Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday with a veritable menagerie of endangered species! What a week!
I
CAN genuinely say this has been one of my favourite Fun Weeks since we started this crazy idea! The support was incredible, and seeing so many people out enjoying themselves and having a laugh is exactly why we do it. The biggest reason it works is you guys. Whether you volunteered, sponsored us, hosted something, entered an event or just turned up and supported us – thank you! People are often surprised when they realise how small the committee behind it all actually is. It’s myself, Naomi, Michelle, Melissa, Graham Snr, Paul and Fleur, and I honestly can’t thank them enough for the hours (and hours!) they put in throughout the year to make the week happen. This year we also say
goodbye to Esther Durston from the committee. A massive thank you to her for everything she has done over the years – it’s hugely appreciated. And then there are all the people who just muck in – our volunteers, marshals, village sports hosts, sponsors, local organisations and those people who appear when we need an extra pair of hands. The joy of children’s laughter on the water
O
NE of the rewarding aspects of introducing children to sailing is the sight and sound of their delight as they splash into the sea – especially when their first sailing lesson is also their first trip to the beach, as is the case with nearly a third of the children we at Roseland Youth Sailing Trust (RYST) meet. Sailing is fun. It gets children off their phones and into the fresh air. It increases physical and mental well-being, building resilience, independence, self-esteem, confidence, teamwork and communication. And as Lee Hamilton of Probus School puts it, sailing offers ‘opportunities for children to experience something they wouldn’t otherwise experience’.
But few families in Cornwall’s disadvantaged communities can afford the cost of sailing lessons. RYST exists to make learning to sail accessible to all children in the Roseland and Clay Country, by funding school sailing at local watersports centres. We receive no government or local authority funding; instead, we rely entirely on our own fundraising efforts to cover all the cost of tuition and equipment, with schools providing transportation. 2026 has been our busiest year to date. We have worked with 23 schools to provide sailing lessons for 826 children, including 27 from Probus, who might not otherwise have had the chance to sail. The cost was nearly £60,000. Every school that participated this year has asked to do so again next year. Owing to shortage of funds, we’ve had to cut autumn sailing this year and are embarking on a major fundraising campaign to enable us to continue to introduce children to the joy and benefits of sailing in 2027. As one school told us, it can make a significant difference: ‘A Year 4 pupil with significant anxiety had long struggled with noise, busy classrooms and especially water. When sailing began, staff were unsure how he’d cope. At one point his dinghy capsized, but instead of panicking, he laughed. Months earlier he would have been overwhelmed, yet he embraced the challenge and carried on. For him, the impact of sailing has extended far beyond learning a new skill on the water; it has been a powerful example of personal growth and self-belief.’ We urgently need your help. our Summer Fayre raising an amazing £1,100, followed by £850 from the Leavers’ Disco. We were also pleased to give £1,200 to the classrooms, for teachers to use where it is most needed, as well as covering the cost of the leavers’ hoodies. And, of course, who could forget the ice-cream van for the whole school? Definitely one of the highlights of the year! WHAT’S COMING UP? We’re already looking ahead to the new school year, with lots more fun planned:

It’s been a busy, fun and rewarding time and we’re really excited to be moving forward as FOPS – Friends of Probus School. The idea behind FOPS is to open things up so that it’s not just parents and teachers who can get involved but grandparents, friends of families and anyone in our wider community who would like to support the school. We want to build a real sense of community around Probus School and, most importantly, help make the school an even better place for our children.

Pavilion improvements
R
ESIDENTS visiting the playing field over the coming weeks will notice a hive of activity as essential improvement works are carried out to the pavilion. The pavilion has been serving the community since 1938, providing changing facilities and a clubhouse for local sports teams, while the wider site continues to support football, bowls, recreation and community activities enjoyed by generations of villagers. However, after many years of heavy use, parts of the building are now showing their age and require some muchneeded attention. The Playing Field Committee has developed a programme of urgent repairs to ensure the pavilion remains safe and functional while longer-term plans for a replacement facility continue to be explored. As a new pavilion is unlikely to be delivered for at least two years, the committee felt it was important to act now and protect this valuable community asset. The works include repairs to the access ramp and steps, improvements to the front elevation, repairs to damaged walls, roof repairs to prevent water ingress, the installation of new suspended ceilings in the changing rooms, the refurbishment of benches, internal decorating, shower replacements and upgrades to the kitchen facilities. What makes this project particularly special is the tremendous support received from local businesses, tradespeople and volunteers. The Playing Field Committee, working closely with members of Probus Football Club, has actively engaged local contractors, 48 | Probus News Magazine | Issue 315
many of whom are parish residents themselves, to help deliver the work. Contractors and volunteers have agreed to carry out the work at significantly reduced rates, meaning that the majority of expenditure will be on materials and essential labour rather than commercial charges. This has helped keep the overall cost of the programme to approximately £4,000, representing outstanding value for the community. This is another example of the strong community spirit for which Probus is known. By choosing to support local businesses and harness the skills and goodwill of volunteers, the Playing Field Committee is not only improving facilities but also keeping investment within the local community. The committee would like to thank everyone who has offered their time, expertise and support. Their contribution will help ensure that the pavilion continues to serve local people for years to come and remains a focal point for sport, recreation and community life in Probus.

The first away fixture is on Saturday 3rd October when Probus travel to Goonhavern Athletic 1st. At the time of writing, I have no information about the Probus FC Reserves.
On Saturday 22nd August, Probus FC and Probus Legends took to the playing field in memory of the much-loved Tyrone Farley. Probus FC secured cup glory, winning 5-3 and later winger Riley Chapman was awarded Man of the Match. Picture below features both teams. Image by Jon Hibberd

HE outdoor season is nearly over, with only a few friendly matches left and the club competition finals on 12 September 2026. The green closes on 19 September. The men enjoyed a strong season, but ill health and injury meant the ladies had to withdraw from league and county fixtures. With just 18 playing men, the club still completed both leagues, finishing 9th of 13 in the Group 3 Cornwall District League and 2nd of 10 in the Group 3 Triples League. The Presentation Evening will be held on 25 September 2026, and the AGM on 6 October at 2pm.
