With a peak season daily average of 110,000 tourists flocking to Venice, Italy, and around 55,000 people calling it home, the demand for top-quality public transportation is high. As a leading public transportation provider, Actv has recently implemented a significant expansion plan. COO Gianluca Cuzzolin explained more, in an exclusive interview with Inside Marine. VULKAN ITALIA The first example of the new ACTV hybrid VAPORETTO originates from a real sustainable project. This is a retrofit of an existing VAPORETTO vessel, 80 class, Canal Grande series, with a traditional diesel propulsion, that will welcome a brand-new serial hybrid propulsion designed by VULKAN according to ACTV’s specification. VULKAN was project leader for the whole retrofit and conversion process. The new propulsion system’s bench test results won over ACTV’s technicians and managers, widely confirming the emissions reduction in accordance with Venice University’s virtual model.
The fully retrofitted hybrid VAPORETTO will sail again in the Lagoon from 2024.

Currently, Actv’s operations account for 1% of the PM10, 5% of the NOx and 2% of the CO of Venice’s total emissions. The model predicts that, with the implementation of hybrid vessels, Actv will reduce its own emissions respectively by 31% of PM10, 21% of NOx and 4% of CO, which will help with the city’s emissions.
Technology upgrades With the imminent arrival of new vessels, Actv felt it was time to make some other changes. Having used the same fleet management system for many years, the company decided it needed a change.

“We will be upgrading our station communication and installing new LCD screens on board all of our vessels, and at landing stages,” said Mr Cuzzolin. “We are also looking at new GPS technology that will improve live tracking. Ultimately, we want to ensure that we always give the customers the very best experience.” With customer satisfaction in mind, Actv is working on an advanced ticketing system that will allow customers to purchase tickets on a ‘pay-as-you-go’ basis.
