Our History The name of our school and its suburb honours the memory of Field Marshall Earl Wavell (1883-1950). Archibald Percival Wavell was a distinguished English soldier who served in the Boer War, won a Military Cross at Ypres in Flanders in 1915 and was Commander-inChief of British and Dominion Forces in the Middle East from July 1939 to July 1941. Many Australians served under his command during the early part of World War II, particularly in North Africa, Greece, Crete and Syria. Wavell was then appointed Commander-in-Chief in India and subsequently in the South-West Pacific, before becoming Viceroy of India in 1943. Following retirement in 1947 he published a number of works and was President of the Royal Society of Literature. Wavell State High School opened on 27 January 1959, under the leadership of its founding Principal, Mr C.E. Anstey. The school quickly developed a strong reputation in the northern suburbs of Brisbane, a reputation we strive to maintain today as we respect the past and lead for the future.

All students and staff at Wavell State High School are welcomed into one of four houses. These are named after places and battles associated with our schools’ namesake Earl Wavell. In recognising the fundamental importance that belonging has to our school culture, the house system encourages students to participate and contribute across all year levels. Together they compete in Interhouse competitions with academic, cultural and sporting pursuits.

Student Absences – Notification by School Non-attendance at Form meeting – Parents/carers of any student recorded as absent at Form meeting will receive a text message. Students who miss Form meeting or are late to school, must sign in at the Student Services Office.
Illness / Accident – A student who is unwell must obtain written permission from their teacher to attend Sick Bay in the Student Services Office: 1. Students may rest in Sick Bay until assessed to determine if they need to go home or can return to class; 2. When a student is being sent home, a Head of Year Coordinator will contact parents/ carers; and 3. Parents/carers must arrange for the collection of their sick child as soon as possible. Students can only remain in Sick Bay for a short period.
General Expectations Due to the potential interruption to learning and theft, mobile phones and other electronic devices are not to be brought to school. If for safety reasons, it is necessary to carry a mobile phone after school, application is to be made to the Executive Principal and the phone is to be stored in the school safe during the day. •T he School Canteen is the only facility available to purchase food once students have arrived at school. • Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds to purchase food. •B icycle racks are located in the fenced compound near the Library. Students with bicycles are to enter and leave the grounds only via Brae Street and must have a high-quality lock for the bicycle. •M oney/valuables including go-cards are not to be left unattended in the grounds. In exceptional circumstances, when it is necessary for students to carry large sums of money or valuables, these are to be left for safe keeping at the School Office.
Student Resource Scheme The Government supports parents with these costs with an allowance which is made through a state government payment direct to the school. Wavell State High School operates a Student Resource Scheme to ensure resources are purchased cost effectively. This covers the provision of text books, in-class equipment, library resources, sporting equipment, specialist subject equipment and basic resources and technology for daily classroom lessons and follow up homework tasks.

Students are provided teacher tuition, administration services, and school facilities as part of their entitlement to a public education. All resource costs for curriculum materials, text books, specialist equipment, excursions, activities, uniforms and stationery are the responsibility of parents.

Parent-Teacher Interviews Parents have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with teachers, to discuss their student’s progress, twice yearly in Terms 2 and 3.

Wavell uses an email platform for correspondence called Vision 6. Add Wavell to your safe sender list. We find that bulk emails can end up in your “junk/spam” folders. Keep your phone numbers, email and home addresses and any relevant information up to date. These can be provided to the Enrolment Officer - enrolment@wavellshs.eq.edu.au. You can subscribe to our Newsletter via our website.

Uniform Wavell is a uniform school. Our P&C has established an appropriate uniform and expect students to wear the uniform with pride. Uniform purchases may be made at the Uniform Shop, open Monday through to Thursday mornings from 8:15am to 11:15am. Appointments can be made via our website.

School Bags Wavell has an official backpack as part of our school uniform. Alternatively, we do expect students to carry an appropriate and ergonomically designed backpack that will withstand daily wear and tear by school students. The purchase of well-designed backpacks and their correct use is an important factor to promote good posture and minimise effort in carrying school bags. 7
Wavell Daily On your first day at Wavell, please bring your pencil case and something to write in. You will be issued with a Student Planner, School Calendar and Timetable, following your commencement. Plan with your family your travel and pick up arrangements - to and from school.
