Welcome
Principal’s Welcome Welcome to Sarina State High School - which exists to make a real difference in the lives of Sarina and district people. On behalf of the staff, students and parents of Sarina State High School, I would like to welcome your family to our school community. Our school is a great school, with a commitment to providing the very highest quality service so that every student may achieve the highest educational outcomes. We believe this is achieved by providing a caring and supportive environment, which is reinforced through our productive partnerships with students, parents and staff. We are committed to our core values - Imagine, Believe, Together Achieve. These form the foundations that develop responsibility, self-discipline and respect for our students and others in the pursuit of success. We provide a personalised and stimulating learning environment designed to encourage students to reach their full potential. We believe high quality teaching is vital for high quality learning, as our staff make a significant contribution to the lives of our students. Our school has established a reputation built on traditional values including respect giving, high standards of discipline and demonstrating pride in appearance. Outstanding achievements across academic, cultural, citizenship and sporting areas can be directly attributed to our focus on providing a diverse range of opportunities. We are dedicated to ensuring that every student will exit our school with the learning, training and qualifications to enter a pathway suited to their needs and aspirations. Curriculum
Sarina State High School is a coeducational school of approximately 850 students from year 7 to year 12. Our school emphasises a culture of high expectations. Our varied curriculum caters for targeted learning needs and enables students opportunities to progress and explore personalised pathways. Our strong and positive links within the local community have formed a strong foundation to allow for work placements, school base apprenticeships and traineeships.

Junior Secondary
Years 7, 8 & 9 Bridging the gap between primary and secondary school Junior Secondary students are supported in this phase of education ensuring the bridge between primary and secondary school is safe, strong and consistent for all students. Our Junior Secondary curriculum is designed to ensure all students specific adolescent needs are catered for while providing them with the best learning environment. Our curriculum values diversity, is inclusive while also being focused on the students’ wellbeing and successful transition. In order to nurture and strengthen the development of our students’ talents and abilities we provide an engaging learning culture that develops supportive, collaborative and independent learning.

Senior Secondary
Years 10, 11 & 12 Development and enhancement of individual pathways The Senior Secondary phase of education helps to continue to develop and enhance our students to achieve their personalised plan, to achieve their true potential. We recognise the importance of educational and vocational guidance for all students. Career Education is undertaken by all students throughout the curriculum. This assists the setting of long term career goals and the selection of appropriate subjects. Our Senior Secondary curriculum has a wide range of subjects which allows students to select courses which are integral to meeting their pathway. To ensure students are planning and making informed choices for their transition into life after schooling, an interview is conducted with each student and their parent/caregiver in Year 10 to finalise their Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan. Students are also able to participate in the Start Uni Now (SUN) program which allows them to undertake University subjects while still at school.
We provide: • A curriculum that is rigorous and promotes the pursuit of excellence with quality teaching and learning as the foundation. • A range of General and Applied subjects. • Flexible pathways accessing an extensive range of Vocational Education and Training Certificates, School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships and access to a range of TAFE in School courses.

Development Programs
Development programs are offered to students who uphold the values of the school and the programs Netball Development Program The program believes that Netball is an effective tool to deliver a comprehensive Health and Physical Curriculum to young woman aspiring in sport. The theoretical content of the program aligns with the Australian Curriculum but has a larger emphasis on Netball within practical environments. Through active involvement in the program, our students are offered a number of social, cultural and educational experiences. Our school Netball teams compete throughout Mackay, Central Queensland and the wider state. Students are not required to enrol in the program in order to play for our school but it is recommended to assist with team training schedules.
Rugby League Development Program The program fosters the belief that sport, Rugby League in particular due to its popularity within the area, can be used as an effective vehicle to develop respectful young men who can contribute positively to the community. Through active involvement in the program, our students have been offered a number of social, cultural and educational experiences. The theoretical content of the program aligns with the Australian Curriculum but has a larger emphasis on Rugby League within practical environments. Our school Rugby League teams compete throughout Mackay, Central Queensland and the wider state. We also host games with international schools who regularly tour our region. As part of the senior phase of this program, students deliver coaching clinics to junior students and cluster primary school students as part of the vocational education components of the program. Students are not required to enrol in the program in order to play for our school but it is recommended to assist with team training schedules. Our female students are also offered the opportunity to represent our school in Rugby League and compete in the Mackay District competition which as a school we have done extremely well in since the competitions inception in 2015.

Instrumental Music
The Instrumental Music Program at Sarina State High School is an extension of the classroom Music program and provides students with the opportunity to experience the expressive qualities of music through learning to play a band instrument. Students also learn about commitment, responsibility, and teamwork and how to work together to achieve quality outcomes. Through Music education, the students are led to an awareness of music and an appreciation of the part music plays in their own lives and in the lives of others. Our students perform regularly at school functions, competitions, and the greater community as part of school bands (Concert Band and Soul Band).
