Programs of Excellence
Wavell boasts a rich history of exceptional performance in the areas of Academics, Athletics, Performing Arts, and Music. In continuation of this legacy, we have established Programs of Excellence in the following areas: Academics, Dance, Drama, Music, Netball, and Rugby League. These programs provide students with the chance to delve into the intricacies of their selected field through in-depth study. Our courses have received widespread recognition for their quality and popularity, with a high demand for enrolment opportunities. Our Programs of Excellence are widely sought after by students from across Brisbane’s northern suburbs. Academic
Our Academic Program of Excellence for Year 7, 8 and 9 encourages students to reach their full academic potential. This program provides extension and enrichment in core subjects (Mathematics, Science, English, History, and Geography) for academically gifted students. In the Academic Program of Excellence, the curriculum is tailored to meet the needs of high-achieving students with an accelerated pace, adjusted tasks, opportunities for collaborative learning, and encouragement for independent inquiries. Students in the program have the same class schedule and elective options as their peers, and their progress is still evaluated against the Australian Curriculum standards.
Music
Our Music Program of Excellence provides students in Years 7-12 to learn alongside like-mined musicians to further extend their love of music both in the classroom and beyond. The Program offers: •
Timetabled Music Excellence classes from Years 7-12 focussing on interesting and engaging units of study in Composition, Musicology and Performance at an advanced level

Inclusion in our advanced bands and ensembles with regular rehearsal and performance opportunities

Dance
Our Dance Program of Excellence provides opportunities to value add to students current Dance experiences across Years 7 – 12. The Program offers: • Audition based program • Timetabled classes from Years 7-12 with pathways into Certificate and General Dance curriculum studies in Senior. • Regular performance opportunities including competitions, showcases and community events. • Classes at local dance studios led by industry professionals • Workshops and choreographic sessions led by industry professionals • Individualised strength and conditioning programs to nurture and develop the unique attributes of each dancer • State of the art and purpose-built facilities and equipment • Daily use of technology to support the development of the Artist in today’s world • Development of audition skills in preparation for tertiary and other postschool dance related pathways
Drama
Our Drama Program of Excellence provides students the opportunity to learn in an environment that inspires and encourages students to achieve their own standard of personal excellence in Drama. The Program offers: • Timetabled classes from Years 7-12 with pathways General and Applied curriculum studies in Senior. • Strong partnerships and tradition of working with industry professionals + live theatre opportunities • Regular performance opportunities in school and the wider community • State-wide competition experience • Artist-in-residence work with students annually to devise and present a show • Workshops in a range of styles • Audition workshops and tertiary entrance preparation
Rugby League
Our Rugby League Program of Excellence has a long history of nurturing aspiring professional athletes alongside their academic studies. Using Rugby League as a tool to drive high standards and performance outcomes, our students are shaped to be positive young men both on and off the field with prosperous post-schooling pathways. The Program offers: • Access to Elite Tier 1 Broncos Challenge competition across all age groups (NRL recruitment exposure) • Timetabled classes from Years 7-12 with qualified coaches focused on developing the whole player + student • Access to a rich network in the professional sporting space • Over 40 alumni have made their debut in the National Rugby League • Access to renowned experts in Strength and Conditioning, Dietetics, and Physiotherapy • Direct connections to key employers for post-graduation employment opportunities • Entry into our exclusive tutoring program
Netball
Our Netball Program of Excellence provides students in Years 7 - 12 the opportunity to be immersed in high-quality netball training and development alongside their academic studies. Using Netball as a tool, students are supported holistically by coaching staff who care about all aspects of their development on and off the court. The program offers: • Timetabled classes from Year 7 - 12 with qualified coaches focusing on fitness, technical netball skills, ACARA theory components in Senior • Academic and wellbeing tracking by Wavell Netball staff • Regular matches in local and state competitions • Access to renowned experts in Strength and Conditioning, Dietetics, and Physiotherapy • Mentor program connecting junior students to our seniors creating a supportive & positive learning environment
