Diego! Purchase your tickets by Dec. 9th at KenTalBiz.org. As a way to keep their businesses going in the Depression, a number of prominent San Diego builders were active in the build out of Talmadge. In addition to what we gleaned from the Notices of Completion, a neighbor shared an original Homebuilders Guide for Talmadge that was published circa 1940. It listed all the major builders within Talmadge and even showed original pictures of the homes they built. Because of this information, we discovered that we had 7 Master Builders and 2 Master Architects that built homes within the Talmadge Gates. Another unique and special architectural quality about Talmadge is the development of the California Ranch style of homes that were made popular by the famous architect Cliff May, including publication in Sunset Magazine. (Cliff May was married to Roy Lichty’s daughter.) This style of architecture flourished in Talmadge in the 1930s due to Cliff May and The Dennstedt Company. We have 14 of these California Ranch gems in Talmadge.

Over a dozen of the builders also lived in the neighborhood. For example, John Lovett, who lived on 49th Street, stood on his lot with his wife to-be, Lucille, and told her that if she married him, he would build her a neighborhood. She agreed to the proposal, and Lovett not only built the house where they lived, but 53 more in Talmadge. The craftmanship of Talmadge builders and the compact period of development between 1936 and 1942 give Talmadge a coherence and character that persists to this day. Because Talmadge follows a stepped-down pattern of development between El Cajon Boulevard and the canyons overlooking Mission Valley, much of Talmadge retains its original architectural integrity. This is what makes Talmadge so historically significant and worth preserving. As a Homebuilder Suburb characteristic of the FHA, it represents an austere yet resilient time in our country’s and San Diego’s history. If you would like to learn more about the history of Talmadge and its effort to become a historic district, please visit our website at www.tpehd.com.
