While
preparing for the latest in a series of meetand-greets with library customers, the news reports came in rapid succession: the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic; Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson checked in from Australia to report that they had tested positive; and the NBA began canceling that night’s games. It was March 11 and I had been on the job for 31 days. A week that began with me meeting customers in the bustling front lobby of the Sands Library Building on a sunny Sunday afternoon ended with an announcement that we would be closing the same building indefinitely. The world changed that week and suddenly the story of 2020 for Princeton Public Library would be how we adapted to that change. The closure was significant, and the response of this organization was impressive. In short, we met uncertain times with unprecedented services. As you page through this annual report, you’ll see a library that reinvented itself on the fly, finding new ways to serve its customers, and the greater Princeton community, while its physical space and collection were off limits. You’ll also see an organization that embarked on a well-thought-out phased reopening plan, adjusting that plan to match the ever-changing landscape caused by the virus. Along the way, more people realized what we who have worked in libraries have long known: a library is about more than just a building and physical objects; it is about a dedicated staff delivering all kinds of resources to help people realize their dreams. Between the pages telling the story of 2020 are lists of people and institutions who made gifts to supplement taxpayer support. These gifts make the difference between a good library and a great one. My introduction to Princeton Public Library was far from traditional, I was very pleased to end 2020 understanding in a deeper way why Princeton loves its public library and knowing that we are up for any challenges we might face in the future. — Jennifer Podolsky Executive Director 3

The Sands Library Building closes as COVID-19 cases rise in Princeton and in New Jersey. The library sets up a virtual reference desk and pivots to emphasize its digital resources, use of which increase dramatically compared to previous years. reference questions were answered via phone, chat and email by staff working remotely while the Sands Library Building was closed. The building closed, but the library continued to provide service to Princeton.

he call came on Sunday night, two days after the Sands Library Building closed. Mayor Liz Lempert asked if the library would collaborate with the municipality and Princeton Public Schools on a website that would give residents a single source of information about the COVID-19 pandemic. Two days later, thanks to the tireless efforts of the library’s Information Technology Department and the Office of Marketing and Communications collaborating with community partners, princetoncovid.org was online.

In those crucial early days of the pandemic, the website provided verified, official information about the pandemic from trusted public institutions. In addition to status updates about the number of cases and the latest on health precautions, princetoncovid.org featured sections highlighting resources for those who wanted to help and those seeking help; information about testing and social distancing; advice for those working from home; a calendar of virtual events by local organizations; and what would be one of the most-visited pages: a list of which local businesses were open and when. As restrictions eased, testing ramped up and vaccines began to roll out, princetoncovid.org continued to evolve, remaining a vital source of information about a transformational event in modern history.

The library begins implementing its reopening plan by accepting materials that were in circulation at the time of the closure.
Building a reopening plan
P
lanning for reopening began in late March and was guided by two fundamentals: science and safety. Working with the municipal Health Department and following best practices of our colleagues at other libraries, the eventual plan approved by the Board of Trustees was adaptable to what was an everchanging situation. At the onset of planning, so much about the virus was unknown, particularly how long it could survive on hard surfaces such as books. With just under 20,000 physical items in circulation at the time we closed, this was no small challenge. There was also the matter of retrofitting what had been open and accessible public service desks with plexiglass in a way that would keep them welcoming to customers. We also outfitted staff with approved personal protective equipment. The library overcame all logistical hurdles in implementing its phased reopening plan: materials return and processing led to contactless hold pickup, which spurred establishment of a miniature version of the library in the Community Room and the eventual reopening of all three floors and restoration of most services. Parts of the building were repurposed, staging areas for books and other physical materials were changed (and changed again), shelving was moved to new locations (and moved back) and furniture was rearranged to facilitate social distancing. When circumstances changed, staff made adjustments on the fly. We knew many in the community missed us and were eager to return, as were staff. But science and safety came first.

One month after initiating a program to lend wireless internet hotspots, the library extends its free, high-speed Wi-Fi to cover all of Hinds Plaza, creating an outdoor workspace for the community.

Wisnovsky Fund Mary Wisnovsky's death was keenly felt at the library. A longtime resident who knew just about everyone in Princeton, Mary worked for several years as an administrator for the Friends of the Library. Upon her passing, her friends established The Mary Wisnovsky Fund for Acquisitions to memorialize her love for her hometown library.

nusual among New Jersey libraries, Princeton Public Library’s budget comes from a combination of tax dollars and private support. Generous private gifts from our community typically provide between 20% and 25% of annual operating expenses, including income from an endowment fund that generates much-needed funding and continues to grow as a result of wise investment decisions. 2020 was an unprecedented year for the library as traditional building-generated revenue streams (book sales, room rental fees, café sales) disappeared when the building closed. The library’s commitment to raise funds to support special projects and ongoing expenses reflects the desire to provide extraordinary service without placing additional burdens on taxpayers.
