Message from the President This is my last message as Club President and there is not enough space here to thank everyone for making the past two years so remarkable, meaningful and rewarding. It has truly been an honor and a privilege to serve as the 50th President of the Princess Anne Country Club and to work alongside such talented Board and Team Members. The biggest thing I’ve learned during my tenure is how dedicated our Team Members are, how challenging their jobs have been during this pandemic, and how hard they work to make the Princess Anne the premier private club in the region and the state. I have been blessed to serve on a Board comprised of exceptionally gifted people who have consistently brought energy and wisdom to our meetings. We have focused on the Club’s future, realizing in this challenging environment that we must provide a safe and welcoming haven with first class amenities to attract future generations of PACC Members. In this vein, we have welcomed so many wonderful new families this year. I am indebted to Vice President Susan Pender, Treasurer Patrick Shuler and Secretary Emeritus Les Watson for the countless hours they have given to our Club, their friendship and sage advice. I also wish to thank our volunteer Board for not only taking the time to serve but also for their support and thoughtful counsel as we guided this ship through the COVID-19 sea. Finally, I think all of us should express our gratitude to Bill Shonk who has lead the PACC through the pandemic with an infinite supply of kindness, patience, wisdom and humility. The amount of meetings/phone calls over the past 20 months centering around how to keep the Club open with safe and incomparable amenities and services for our Members are too numerous to count and will be sorely missed. Bill has an exceptional Team with unbelievable talent and depth here at the PACC – Jenn Garrott, Mardy Colling, Kristen Bunting, Cathy Havrilesky, Denise Johnson, Courtney Whittemore, Matt Liebler, Jordan Spitler, John Fraser, Andrea Pettay, Geoff Benson, McCall Andy, Steve Layden, Monica Au and the entire Operations Team do an amazing job. When the pandemic truly impacted us in March 2020 and the onslaught of ever-changing restrictions ensued, I expected an avalanche of calls and emails with constructive criticisms. I was pleasantly surprised by the positive support, friendly email suggestions and encouraging comment cards I received, which confirmed to me how fortunate we are to have a caring Membership of 1,060 plus families and how fortunate our Members are to have Operations Team focused on delivering an outstanding experience Welcome New Board Members for each of us when we step onto our beautiful campus. Up-to-Date from the General Manager I too, like President Fanney notes above, very much wish to thank outgoing Directors Bekki Jucksch, Admiral John Mazach, Josh Parnell and Monica Stein. Each of these special leaders have served the Princess Anne faithfully as committee chairs and provided valuable leadership that has truly made a difference. If you have a chance to personally reach out to these devoted volunteers, I encourage you to extend congratulations and appreciation. I was fighting back the tears as I wrote about President Fanney in last month’s column and I’m choked up again as I attempt to express my gratitude to longtime Club Secretary Les Watson. The critically important counsel, sage wisdom, stable institutional knowledge, vision and deep devotion that Secretary Watson has provided as your Club’s secretary since 2004 is immeasurable! I speak for every Board of Director (Les has served with 126 different Directors through his tenure), all nine President’s he so faithfully counseled and our Operations Team when I say that the Princess Anne Country Club owes a deep debt of gratitude to Club Secretary Leslie R. Watson. I personally will forever be grateful for his mentoring and friendship, humble behind the scenes governance guidance, passion to protect Club tradition, strategic vision – and so much more! Joe, originally from DeGraff, Ohio, is a partner with Cybeck Capital Partners, a PE firm with investments across the country. Warren and Nancy Harding currently live in Kings Grant where they reared their two children, PACC Members Shannan Poteran and Matt Harding. Warren is a retired Navy diver who has taken up retirement passions which include painting in acrylics and oils and gardening. Nancy is a consulting dietitian and still does home health for Sentara on a part-time basis. They are both active in their church, enjoy traveling, playing bridge, reading and exercising. Jeff is a Virginia Beach native and Kristyn is from Northern Virginia. They met and were married at The College of William & Mary where they were both athletes. They have two children, Lilly Beth or “LB” (9) and Carter (7). They are now moving back to Hampton Roads after a decade away while Jeff completed medical training. Currently, Jeff is finishing up training at The Cleveland Clinic in cardiology followed by cardiac electrophysiology. He was recruited to Sentara’s Heart Hospital and will begin there in August 2022. Jim is originally from Syracuse, attended Hamilton College for his undergraduate studies and received his master's degree in management of information technology from the University of Virginia (Wa-hoo-wa!). Membership Matters
I am thrilled to launch this new column in our PACC newsletter and engage in a club-wide dialogue about etiquette. So, let’s dust off those thank-you cards and get ready to explore the wide world of social graces with “Modern Manners.” What is “etiquette” and do manners really matter anymore? Etiquette, loosely defined, is a set of guidelines for socially acceptable behavior. While society is exponentially more casual today, a little etiquette can still go a long way. By having a set of societal guidelines, everyone can be on the “same page” with expectations for attire and comportment and be able to walk confidently into a room. I like to think that while manners are wonderful tools for showing respect towards others, it is most important to show respect towards oneself. Show yourself respect by grooming, nourishing your body with healthy food and exercise, mentally caring for yourself by reading, meditating or listening to podcasts, etc. If you want to get ambitious, make your bed or clean up the kitchen before you leave home. It sounds silly, or even obvious, but the time we take to care for ourselves, especially in the morning, sets the tone for the day. We will begin the day lighter and armed with good energy, ready to treat others the same way we treat ourselves. Think about those rotten mornings you have had – running late, tripping over toys, spilling coffee on yourself, hitting every red light – you end up in a foul disposition and are probably not as gracious towards others as you could be. So, start with yourself, and see where the day takes you! 13 Princess Anne Living | November/December 2020
Membership Matters Fee and Policy Updates As a reminder, your Board of Directors adopted the following policies at their August 26, 2021 meeting. Initiation Fee Increases Effective October 1, initiation fees increased for all membership classifications as follows: • Resident Full increased from $20,000 to $30,000 • Resident Athletic increased from $15,000 to $20,000 • Resident Social increased from $7,000 to $10,000 • Non-Resident Full increased from $15,000 to $20,000 • Non-Resident Social increased from $5,000 to $7,000 • Please visit the PACC website for Legacy and Under 40 rates, as well as information on military and corporate discounts. In the event that the maximum number of Regular (Resident Full or Athletic) Members is reached, the following priority system will be utilized to accept Regular members when a space becomes available. 1. Upgrade/transfer from a current Associate Member (Resident Social, Non-Resident Full or Non-Resident Social) g Previous Regular membership does not provide priority access 2. New legacy applicants 3. Current Regular Members on a Leave of Absence 4. New non-legacy applicants An individual may be placed on the waiting list upon completion of all associated documents/forms and payment of a $1,000 deposit of their joining/upgrade fee. This fee will be applied to the initiation/upgrade fee when the individual becomes a Regular Member (Resident Full or Athletic). If the individual chooses to remove themselves from the waiting list, the deposit will be refunded.
Monthly Dues At their meeting on September 30, 2021 your Board of Directors approved the 2021-2022 Operations Budget. This budget includes an increase to monthly dues of $20 for Full and Athletic Membership Classes and $10 for all other Membership Classes, effective November 1, 2021. As with many other businesses, your Club has seen significant increases to costs of goods over the past year. Additionally, to remain a competitive workplace in today’s unique workforce climate, wage adjustments are needed for many positions on our Team. These increases will be largely invested in these two areas. The Golden Rules Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Rules Walk and 13th Anniversary of Golden Rules!
September 13, 2021 was another successful, on-course Rules Walk sponsored by the PALG. Richard Wight, a USGA Rules official, guided us through four holes, illustrating rules and answering questions on our course. We all agreed that seeing the rules in action is the most meaningful way to learn the Rules of Golf.
Questions and Topics that were Covered on the Walk Dear Rules Guru, I love the PALG Rules Walk. I leave knowing so much, but always wanting to know more. I have a few questions. 1. On the 16th hole, I hit a great tee shot but it landed against a fence on the right side. Do I get relief from the fence? There was no way I could hit my ball that close to the fence. Also, I know on number 15 I got swing relief from the split rail fence. Same thing, right? Answer: The fences on the right side of the 16th hole are boundary fences. They have the same status as OB stakes. This is found in the Rule book under “definitions.” Free relief is not allowed. If you can’t play the ball, your only option is to declare the ball “unplayable.” In this situation, for a one-stroke penalty, you can drop a ball within two driver lengths or play again from the tee. On the 15th hole, the split rail fence is not a boundary fence, it is an immovable obstruction; free relief is available. To summarize, you get free relief from a fence that is in bounds, no free relief from a boundary fence. 25 Princess Anne Living | November/December 2021
“It’s everything you always wanted to know about the Rules, but were afraid to ask.” 2. On 18 my ball landed next to that netting. Surely I can get relief from that, right? Answer: This time you are right. The driving range netting is not a boundary fence, it is in-bounds and deemed to be an immovable obstruction. Free relief is available for stance, swing and lie of the ball. Please note, however, the driving range is out-of-bounds. 3. In the last few weeks, I seem to have developed what I call “The Rights.” a. Last week I teed off on #16. My tee shot took a “right” curve toward the out-of-bounds. I then hit a provisional that went into the fairway. How long do I have to look for the original ball? If I find my original ball in-bounds, but in a bush, can I choose to use my provisional instead? Answer: Searching for the ball: once you reach the area where your ball is likely to be, you are allowed three minutes to search. After that, the ball is deemed to be “lost.” Note that the clock does not start until you or your partner start searching. If other players are searching before you get to the area, walk slowly. The clock doesn’t start until you get there. If you find your original ball in-bounds, you must abandon the provisional ball. So, you either have to play from the bush or use the unplayable ball rule. You can’t use the provisional. b. I’m embarrassed to say that I shanked my drive on #17 toward the out-of-bounds. I then hit my provisional toward the pin. It hit in front of the green, skulled up toward the hole, hit the flag stick and rolled in! I was so excited that I ran up to the green, pulled my provisional out of the hole and announced that I had a par! My opponent yelled, “not yet!” She was still looking for my ball. Answer: This is match play not stroke play. Crazy deal. Your provisional ball in the hole becomes the ball that counts as soon as you take it out of the hole. If your opponent finds your original ball in-bounds before you run up to the green and take your ball out of the hole, you have to play the original ball. Fastest player wins. 4. In a match play, my partner and I used the same type of ball. By accident, I hit her ball instead of mine. What is the penalty? Answer: When you played a wrong ball, you were disqualified for that hole only. Your partner incurs no penalty and a ball must be replaced on the spot, or estimated spot, where the partner’s ball was lying. 5. On #15, I hit a great shot that was going up to the green near the flagstick. My ball barely clipped the wire going across the road. I didn’t care, I was not going to try that shot again. Answer: Unfortunately (or fortunately), we have a local rule covering this situation. When a ball hits a wire crossing the hole, the shot must be replayed without penalty. I believe member H.S., Jr. holds the record on #8, hitting the wire on three consecutive shots, before a great “wire -free” tee shot! 6. What-in-the-world is Net Double Bogey? I keep hearing that term when people talk about posting their score. Answer: This is a term used to explain the maximum score you can have on a hole for handicap purposes. This is calculated as follows: Par + 2 strokes is a double bogey; add any handicap strokes you receive on that hole and that is your maximum score. Some examples: The 1st hole is the #1 handicap hole on our course, so on Maximum Score for Handicap Purposes the first hole: Handicap strokes received > If your handicap is between 1 and 18, you receive Net double bogey Par 2 or given on a hole one handicap stroke; your maximum score is: A player with a Course Handicap of 11 receives one stroke on the first 11 allocated holes. 4 (par) + 2 strokes + 1 handicap stroke = 7 On a par-4 hole with a stroke index of 6, the player's net double bogey score is calculated as follows: > If your handicap is between 19 and 36, you receive Par Two Strokes (Double Bogey) Stroke(s) Received Max two strokes. Your maximum score is: 4 1 7 4 4 (par) + 2 strokes + 2 handicap strokes = 8

From the Links Tournament Results 2021 Vincent G. Thomas Men’s Member-Member This year, the weather was perfect, the golf course in amazing condition and a good time was had by all. We can't thank you all enough for your participation and support, as we always look forward to this event each year. A special congratulations to our champions Hu Odom and Scott Ferros! Their steady play of nine-under par over the two days was enough to run the table in the fifth flight. Hu Odom's birdie on the first playoff hole gave the team a one-stroke lead. John's Tip | How to Enhance Your Volley A player can become a better volleyer using an assortment of approaches, along with gaining a better understanding of when to attack. Recognizing cues from an opponent that indicate an opening has been created is a learned behavior, called anticipatory skill. The success of the player's advancement can often be determined by how quickly the player spots a wounded opponent and transitions to the net, thereby limiting the opponent's recovery time and ability to regain equal footing in the rally. Once the ready position and grip are established, the rest of the volley sequence falls into three main parts: advancement, preparation and impact. As with any stroke, each segment connects to the next. The proper execution of one makes the subsequent part that much easier and more effective. Advancement | Players move forward after they have identified—and decided to exploit—a vulnerable opponent. Developing the desire to take advantage of these situations is a prerequisite to mastering this part of the volley sequence. By advancing forward, the player profits from simple geometry: the closer the player is to the net, the more angles there are available, and the better the player's chances of hitting an effective volley. The advance forward could be a result of offense, defense or a miscue such as an opponent hitting a poor shot that lands short in the court. Preparation | After the player advances forward, there is a brief moment when the player gathers himself with a split step—a little hop onto the balls of the feet performed right around the time that the opponent is about to start the backswing. The split step puts a player into the ready position and allows him to easily spring in any direction to intercept the passing shot or cover the lob. Advanced players will sometimes recognize a completely vulnerable opponent and wisely skip the approach shot and split step. In this situation, the player charges straight to the net and steals a volley. Once the player is ready to spot the intended location of the incoming ball, the preparation part of the swing begins. This is the synchronization of the upper-body coil—or shoulder turn—with the desired placement of the backswing for the optimal strike zone. Impact | Hitting a successful volley begins with the transfer of energy through the kinetic chain into the ball. This movement starts from the feet and culminates with the racquet. There's an old saying that good volleying is done from the legs. The best volleyers understand the importance of moving their body forward and into the shot. The general rule is to step forward with the non-dominant foot on a forehand and with the dominant foot on a backhand. The only swinging motion on a standard volley is the uncoiling of the shoulders to bring the racquet to the contact point. 31 Princess Anne Living | November/December 2021

2021 Spindle Cup It was a near perfect day for tennis at the 26th Spindle Cup match at Norfolk Yacht, not too warm and a nice breeze. As always, the matches were hard fought, with many of them coming down to the wire. At the end of the first day, we were up by two points over CCV, having taken three of the four singles matches and three of the four doubles. On day two, we only managed one singles win but still took three doubles wins which put us squarely in second place only, one point behind first place CCV. We brought home the second place trophy which is a win for our 2021 Spindle Cup team. Well done ladies! From the Courts Virginia Cup It felt great to finally participate in events again even though they were both away. Huge thanks to CCV and Norfolk Yacht for hosting this year's Virginia Cup and Tidewater Cup, respectively. The weekend started at CCV in Richmond with our best men competing in the Virginia Cup against CCV, Norfolk Yacht and Westwood. Westwood’s team dominated the event, losing only one match, which happened to be against us at position one. We were fighting for second place with Norfolk Yacht before losing a nail biter at the end at position one in a third-set tie breaker, pushing us to third. Tidewater Cup The day following Virginia Cup, our 4.0-4.5 level guys attempted to defend our Tidewater Cup after a historic “sweep” of all the matches when we last held the event two years ago. The event was moved to Norfolk Yacht as our outdoor courts weren’t ready in time after being renovated. We invited VBTCC to join the event since Elizabeth Manor couldn’t field a team. Again, we were battling with Norfolk Yacht for first and ended up in a tie, which then gets broken by looking at who had the fewest sets lost in their wins, which was Norfolk Yacht. Senior Tidewater Cup It was a tough Saturday for our 11th Annual Senior Tidewater Cup where we had our best senior men (60 and better) attempting to take back our Cup from defending champs Elizabeth Manor and two other area clubs, Norfolk Yacht and VBTCC. Many of (Left to right): Mickey Walker, Ira Steingold, George Shipp, Mike Robinson, Randy Bakel, Jimmy the matches that were budgeted to Sellers, Tom Bakke, David Holland, Steve Burwell, Beau Walker, Robert Mills, Rickey Jacobson go 90 minutes took two-and-a-half hours, which just goes to show how competitive this event was. We had some hard fought battles but, unfortunately, went four for ten in overall matches and zero for three in tie breakers, putting us in third place ahead of VBTCC. Elizabeth Manor and Norfolk Yacht dominated the event both winning seven of their ten matches! To break the tie, we go to “number of sets lost” which put NYCC in first place as they were three-two over Elizabeth Manor who took second place. Can’t win ‘em all is what we took away from it and you can rest assured this team will double their efforts next year to regain the Cup. From the Courts Anderson Cup The 59th annual Anderson Cup Ladies Doubles Tennis event was held at Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville. It was great to see everyone from the other clubs again, after missing out last year. As always, wins were hard to come by as the competition was fierce. We had a rocky start to the weekend with one of our best players and team captain, Bekki Jucksch, still recovering from shoulder surgery, taking herself out of the singles lineup. However, she still was willing to soldier on in doubles. We asked Megan Haynsworth and Dillon Yost, currently on our Spindle Cup team, to join the team. They graciously accepted, even given the short notice, so we bumped everyone up a spot. It turned out that Megan was our only singles win out of the six positions on Friday, but we hung in there and swept all three doubles positions! This put us in a second-place tie with Farmington with four points to CCV’s seven. We had to fight tooth-and-nail for everything we got and, in the end, we were tied for third place with Farmington before falling to fourth after the calculations were made. Farmington had fewer sets lost than us, therefore taking third. Norfolk Yacht took second and, once again, the mighty CCV took home the Cup after sweeping the singles both days. Eye-Poppin’ Sriracha Deviled Eggs INGREDIENTS 6 large eggs, hard boiled, peeled 2 tbsp. srirarcha sauce 2 tbsp. mayonnaise 1 tsp. rice wine vinegar 2 tbsp. finely chopped scallions 1 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. salt ¼ tsp. chili flakes 1 pkg. rice noodles 1 quart canola oil (for frying) 2 tbsp. finely chopped scallions Yield: 12 servings
5-Minute Pumpkin Pie Overnight Oats INGREDIENTS
DIRECTIONS Combine the rolled oats, unsweetened almond milk, plain greek yogurt, organic pumpkin puree, chia seeds, pure maple syrup, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg. Stir to combine. Seal the container or cover with plastic wrap. Place in fridge for 4-6 hours, preferably overnight. Can be eaten cold or reheated in microwave for 1-2 minutes if you prefer it heated. 5. When you’re ready to eat, just top with crushed pecans & cinnamon.

DIRECTIONS 1. Cut peeled eggs horizontally, scoop yolks into bowl. 2. For the yolks: add sriracha, mayonnaise, rice wine vinegar, salt, and mix until smooth. 3. For the rice noodles: Fry in canola oil at 350° F until crisp. This happens quickly, drain on paper towels. While still hot and pliable, place in six-ounce bowls to shape and cool. 4. Season rice noodles with sugar, salt and chili flakes. 5. To assemble: pipe egg yolk mix into whites, place half into rice noodle basket, sprinkle with chopped scallions.
