After many years of volunteering for Primrose Hospice, I am thrilled to be the hospiceās newest trustee.
With a background in marketing, advertising and communications, one of my main priorities is supporting our wonderful Marketing and Communications Officer, Sarah, and helping to raise awareness of Primrose Hospice.
We do this by ensuring everyone knows about the amazing work we do, the fabulous fundraising events we hold, and ultimately, ensuring we raise the £1.95 million we need each year to continue to provide vital services for free.
In fact, one of the ways people can help us do that is detailed in this Bulletinās main feature We are taking part in a national campaign, called This is Hospice Care, run by Hospice UK, which encourages people to leave a gift in their will. You may have seen the campaign on your TV and heard it on your radio! Hospice UK have even chosen to feature one of our patients, Steve, on their website

Legacy donations are an incredible way to help hospice care live on for all, for now, and forever, so if you are in a position to leave a gift in your will, please know you can make a huge difference. You can read more about the campaign and Jackās story across pages 4 - 6 and if you would like to learn more about leaving a gift in your will, please email fundraising@primrosehospice org or call the team on 01527 889796.
Thank you for your ongoing support.

Did you know that in the UK over 46,000 children are bereaved of a parent every single year?*
Today, weāre introducing you to Jack and his family, who have been receiving care and support from Primrose Hospice & Family Support Centre for around two years.
Jack, his wife Amara, and their two young daughters first came to Primrose after Amara was diagnosed with incurable cancer.
Jack shared: āI needed support from Primrose so that I could support my wife and my children, because I wasn't able to be there as much as a father, since a lot of my energy was focused on supporting my wife.
So that's where Primrose really came to the rescue during that latter year, our children, who at four and five years old, weren't really able to make a lot of sense of what was going on. The Primrose team offered children's activities for them to take part in and to build those bonds early, so that when things did get difficult, those bonds would help support them.ā
Amara was supported across our services, including physiotherapy, helping with her physical and mental health and she also attended the Primrose Gals group where she was able to talk and share with others who were also living with life-limiting illnesses
āIād describe the hospice care from Primrose as the kind of support a person truly needs when theyāre living with an illness like terminal cancer. There are peaks and challenges where, if it were just NHS care, there are only certain areas they t hi h k th d f l it

Jackās daughters, Chloe and Nina, took part in our Explorations and ChYPS groups, where they were able to make friends with other young people in similar situations. Our Childrenās Team helped them understand what both their mum and dad were going through, and supported them as they prepared for the future

As Amara became more poorly, she was no longer able to attend Primrose Hospice herself, but our Family Support Team continued to provide vital care for the whole family - and still do today.
If it hadn't been for Primrose I don't think that moment would have materialised.
For me, it was amazing at that point to have a contact at Primrose Hospice from the Children's Team who could give me the advice I needed.ā

Somewhere in your life - in your family, your friendships, your community - hospice care is already making a difference to another family like Jackās. Our Adult Family Support Team also provided vital counselling for Jack to help him cope
āThe best thing I ever did was take up the grief counselling services, because you will have that initial groundswell of support in the immediate aftermath, and that will carry up until the funeral and some time after but the reality is everyone has their own lives to go back to, yet you're still within the grip of grief, and you will need someone to continue to share that grief with.
āThere were some parts where, as a parent, you have no idea how to approach the situation and probably the starkest example of that for me was on the day she died. Amara died in the afternoon at home. Her breathing began to change over the course of an hour, by the end of which she had passed away, I was alone with her throughout and I gently held her up till her last breath.
My Mother had gone to collect the children from school, so I phoned her to ask her to hold back on bringing the girls home. I had no idea what to do in that situation, so I phoned the Childrenās Team and they encouraged me to ask the children what they wanted to do, and at the time, they wanted to see her.
They had become quite used to seeing her in a hospital bed by this point, so they came home, and wrote some cards which they laid on her. There was a part of me that knew in the future they may need it, so there's a photo of them resting the cards on her. Amara looks really peaceful, and it's an incredibly sad but also a beautiful photo in our own personal way.
I was able to continue to function for myself and the girls, knowing that I had a date coming up, where I could be in a safe space with someone that I trusted, where I could release everything that I built up prior.
That is really important, because if you don't release it in that safe space, it will release on its own in other ways that may not be constructive for your family.

One thing people need to understand about hospices is that the culture is built on brightness, friendliness, love, warmth and compassion.
If you ever get the chance to support Primrose Hospice, please do - it will change your perception, and youāll be grateful you did. There are so many families out there, like ours, who desperately need these services at a critical time during an incredibly challenging journey.ā

Our team were there for Jack and his family when they needed us most - but this wouldnāt have been possible without the kindness and support of our community.

Back in November 2025, Melissa took on the incredible challenge of trekking to Everest Base Camp.
Melissa said:
āDetermination and stubbornness pushed me to keep going when things became difficult. Knowing I was raising money for a charity so close to my familyās heart gave me the strength and motivation to continue. Reaching Everest Base Camp meant more to me than just completing the trek. I am incredibly grateful for everyone who supported me along the way.ā
Melissa raised an amazing £2,706 for Primrose Hospice.
Hotshots Netball Club continue to honour the memory of Amy Redhead through their annual charity tournament The 2025 event welcomed over 15 teams of mixed players and, thanks to the incredible support from everyone involved, raised over £394 for Primrose Hospice.
Laura, Hotshots Netball Club Coach said āAt the age of 28, Amy was diagnosed with cancer, and we decided to start a mixed netball tournament to help raise funds for her treatment and honour her memory. Itās a lovely day that brings family and friends together, gets people playing netball and having fun, and we hope to grow the event year on year.ā
The club are already planning their 2026 tournament, which will take place on Saturday 29th August.
The Crystal Gospel Choir recently performed in support of Primrose Hospice, raising £202!
Among the choirās members are Carrie and Emma, who co host the podcast āItās a Death Sentenceā, a podcast about dying and grief. Primrose has even been featured on the podcast, helping to shine a light on the importance of hospice care

Emma said: āI suggested the Primrose Hospice, having experienced their incredible care for my mother and for the support that was then extended to myself, my sister and father in the form of counselling after her death.ā
As of 1st January 2026, the Lickey End Social Club has raised an outstanding £11,856 for Primrose Hospice through its much loved live music nights
We asked Kevin who organises the nights why they chose to support Primrose. He said: āLickey End Social Club chose Primrose as its charitable partner due to it being local and very well known in Bromsgrove with a wonderful reputation for promoting compassion, wellbeing and exceptional care for patients and their families.
The Primrose Hospice has a well-established history of fundraising through music events and the Club's 'Friday Night Liveā all year round music programme is a fabulous way of helping Primrose deliver local services and support for local families.ā
Trevor Bassett and his team have been busy at Gaudet Luce Golf Club raising a huge Ā£9,171 throughout 2025. Trevor who is captain at the golf club said: āIt has been an honour and a privilege to raise funds on behalf of the Primrose Hospice. I chose to raise funds for them after my golfing friends had told me about the fantastic support the hospice provides.
I then visited the hospice where I learnt about all the support available. The staff were all so friendly and helpful, leaving me with a lovely warm feeling. The highlight of my fundraising was my Captainās Golf Charity day when both Hannah and Kelly came along and we raised just over Ā£2,000 on the day. Finally I invited the Primrose Hospice choir to perform a carol concert at my golf club. They were excellent and a lovely evening was had by all.ā

Helen is one of our volunteer Complementary Therapists but thatās not the end of her Primrose journey, every year she hosts a coffee morning at her house to raise funds
Helen said: I chose to support Primrose because the hospice is very close to my heart. Last year it occurred to me to hold a social event that would bring together clients and students of Alvechurch Reiki and Alvechurch Languages. The now annual coffee morning brings together my clients and students for a truly lovely gathering and a rare opportunity for everyone to meet and get to know one another.
Iām thrilled that we enjoyed such a warm and uplifting morning this year, filled with generosity - both in the beautifully baked goodies people brought along and in the donations given to support the work of Primrose Hospice. Together, in 2025, they raised a fantastic Ā£384.70!

A new initiative at the Household Recycling Centre in Redditch has successfully diverted over 5 tonnes of items from going to landfill and also supported two local charities.
This project is a collaboration between the Worcestershire County Council, Severn Waste Services, Primrose Hospice and Family Support Centre, and Age UK North Worcestershire.
If you visit the recycling centre, youāll see a permanent container which provides a convenient way for people to donate items they no longer need. The items collected are sorted and sold in charity shops operated by both local charities, with proceeds directly supporting people in need
"We really appreciate the support from the Council and Severn Waste Services to make this collaboration possible," said Ian McRoy, Retail Manager at Primrose. "This has been a huge success due to the partnership working between the charities and organisations working closely together."
Look out for the new container at the recycling centre and, if your items are just āunlovedā (rather than broken or damaged), please consider donating instead of dumping!
We need people like you to volunteer for Primrose Hospice in a huge variety of roles.
āPrimrose feels like a really good place to be and you realise that when you help others you also help yourself
Life-limiting illnesses arenāt selective, people from all walks of life attend the hospice. Hearing about other peopleās lives and sharing what goes on in yours is really interesting and beneficial to your mood.ā

Our ChYPS (Children and Young Peopleās Support) Group and Teen Group supports children who are bereaved or living with a loved one who has a lifeālimiting illness.
We kicked off 2026 with pebble picture sessions in both groups! Thanks to a generous donation of craft materials from Jan, one of our volunteers, the young people got stuck into creating their own pebble art. They chose pebbles that caught their eye and designed pictures inspired by anything meaningful to themfamily, friends, pets, or simply something that made them smile
The room was filled with chatter, creativity and shared stories. They all created beautiful pieces, and some even felt brave enough to talk about the meaning behind their artwork.
Our Childrenās Groups meets regularly, made possible by our amazing staff and volunteers - thank you for helping us create such supportive and joyāfilled sessions.
Take a thick piece of cardboard (we used white but it could be any colour you like)
Use a selection of stones, driftwood or anything else you have at home to represent your picture
Create your picture on your board
Once youāre happy stick it all down using strong glue or a glue gun (be careful if youāre using hot glue!)
If you wish, embellish your picture with a fine pen
Optional - put your picture into a frame
