Leadership Strategies for Scaling Aleph

JONKER Vice President | Netgear
In the dynamic world of business development, few individuals stand out as pioneers. Richard Jonker is undeniably one of those exceptional figures. He is a seasoned international executive with over two decades of global sales and general management experience in the tech industry. Currently, Richard serves as the Vice President of Marketing & Business Development for NETGEAR’s commercial business.
The Early Years and the Notable Beginning
As the son of two Philips Electronics employees and the great-grandson of a Neumann & Co. representative in Dutch Indonesia, technology is in Richard's DNA. He began his career in distribution in the 90’s, before spending a few years at Apple. He joined NETGEAR in 2007. At NETGEAR, he handled Benelux sales and Emerging Markets and was in charge of commercial product line management and marketing until 2021. In the last three years, he focused on business development in the ProAV and broadcast markets, and he recently took on commercial marketing as well.
Richard believes that gathering great ideas from talented people around the world is not tough. The actual challenge is to make trade-offs and decide what idea to prioritize in order to turn it into a successful product or business. This often means having to let go of other ideas. It is said that people with focus get things done, but those with priorities get the right things done.
A prime example of this is NETGEAR’s entry into the AV-over-IP market almost 9 years ago. Initially seen as a small and niche opportunity, it quickly evolved into a massive multi-billion dollar market with significant barriers to entry. Thanks to strategic planning, NETGEAR is now years ahead of its competitors, and this success was by design.
Striking a Balance Between Short-term Goals and Long-term Vision
As a NASDAQ-listed public company, NETGEAR operates under the laws of Silicon Valley, where investments and priorities are meticulously chosen, and timing and execution align with shareholder expectations. Richard further adds, "Our bets are small enough to fit into our existing structure, without cost explosions, but big and meaningful enough to have an impact in the foreseeable future. Our environment is not very forgiving of vague and long-term landscape paintings. We must deliver with a constant pace, with incremental improvements quarter-on-quarter."
Significant Trends Shaping the AV-over-IP and Networking Sectors
AV-over-IP is revolutionizing audio-video transport, allowing seamless delivery to any output device, from displays to loudspeakers. This technology is becoming increasingly important in live events and broadcasts as these two worlds merge. In regions like the Middle East, India, and Southeast Asia, this technology is rapidly adopted, driven by more competitive pricing and the shift toward cloud-based solutions, which reduce upfront costs. The primary driver of this growth is the rising demand for video technology in conference rooms. Customers now have clearer ideas of their exact needs-a flawless user experience, crisp audio, higher resolutions, and larger displays. Even in the APAC region and smaller economies in EMEA, there is a strong willingness to invest in a premium AV experience.
The Latest Technologies and Innovations in the Commercial Networking Space
Richard believes current trends like cloud computing, software-defined networking, and
infrastructure-as-a-service will persist and eventually become more prevalent in midsize markets. Faster network and internet speeds will enable applications to move to the cloud, transforming the on-premises network into a simpler tool for delivering cloud-based applications. While this shift may pose challenges for big enterprise players, it aligns with NETGEAR’s cost-effective and efficient business approach.
NETGEAR is leading the way in enabling new AV-over-IP applications. For instance, the industry are developing 4K cameras capable of 1,000 frames per second for extreme slow-motion replays such as NBA basketball. This requires massive 100gbe switches and smooth operation. Additionally, manufacturers are working on the commoditization of 8K-slightly compressed video over 50 gbit network ports; it is an upcoming trend. Furthermore, conventional 1GbE AV-over-IP is moving to multi-gig speeds as a final example. This can be achieved using existing CAT5E cabling but necessitates the replacement of network switches to be replaced. Lastly, the use of AI to help networks self-heal is another interesting development.
The Significant Factors of Expansion in APAC and EMEA Regions
As a European with an Asian heritage, Richard is keenly aware of the cultural and linguistic diversity in EMEA and APAC. It is crucial to have people in these regions with the right language, business, and technical skills. The challenges in China and India stem from their large-scale and complex regional distribution. Richard emphasizes the need to align expansion with incremental investment and business goals.
Addressing the Increasing Market Demand
According to Richard, meeting the increasing demand for high-performance networking products has become a challenge post-COVID, mainly due to the rise of remote and virtual work. The team has learned to scale up by working with the chip suppliers and manufacturing partners in a much more agile way. The trend of remote collaboration and virtual or hybrid meetings is going to continue; demand is still growing.
Looking ahead, NETGEAR plans to increase its significance and relevance in the IT and AV sectors within the global enterprise and top government/education bodies in major regions. The company will prioritize investments to address any technology gaps and enrich the product portfolio.
At NETGEAR, the team believes they need to leave this earth in a better shape than they found it. For over 25 years, they have worked extensively to lower the carbon footprint of the products as well as the supply chain. Their ESG reporting is a testament to that. Richard is proud to have contributed to that by co-authoring a whitepaper on efficient ProAV network designs.
NETGEAR is a truly global company that was founded in 1996, with its most senior leaders coming from emerging markets. The team will maintain a strong focus on succeeding in these markets. Richard is a big fan of the book “Conquering the Chaos: Win in India, Win Everywhere” by Ravi Venkatesan, who previously led John Deere and Microsoft in India. One memorable point from the book is that a product for India needs 80% of the functionality against 30% of the price. However, with AV-over-IP switching, this principle does not hold - the product must deliver 100% of the functionality without significant concessions on pricing.
The Untapped Potential in the AV and IT Market
There is a lag in the AV and IT markets due to limited budgets and restrictions from the local government and education buildings across the world. Richard sees significant potential in this area. These customers are looking for high-quality products and services at affordable prices, presenting a huge opportunity for NETGEAR, as major enterprise brands are unable to tap into this market.

Taylor Pawelka is the Director of Marketing at ProShip, Inc., a leading multi-carrier shipping software provider. With over 10 years of experience in the marketing world, Taylor has built a well-respected career consisting of strategic marketing campaigns filled with engaging content. Taylor’s expertise and strategic vision have made a significant impact in the logistics and supply chain tech industry, earning widespread respect and recognition.

In the rapidly evolving supply chain technology landscape, where innovation and adaptability are crucial, the strength of a company’s marketing strategy often boils down to one key factor: the effectiveness of its internal team. My journey of growing up in a team environment and building my own group of insanely smart marketers has been instrumental in driving the success of ProShip, a leading multi-carrier shipping software platform. Due to this, I strongly believe that the benefits of fostering an internal marketing team, especially in this dynamic industry, are profound and multifaceted.
From a young age, I was immersed in environments that thrived on teamwork. Whether it was participating in team sports or collaborating on academic projects, I learned the importance of working together towards a common goal. These early experiences instilled in me a deep appreciation for the synergy that a well-coordinated team can achieve.
As I ventured into the world of business, these lessons became the cornerstone of my leadership approach. When I was passed the torch to truly own ProShip’s marketing efforts, I was determined to build a team that mirrored the collaborative spirit I’ve always valued. Too often, I see companies choose to outsource their marketing efforts to agencies and faulter from mediocre messaging, mismatched branding, and subpar content, effectively wasting time, efforts, and budgetary resources.
This commitment to fostering a strong internal team has been a defining factor in ProShip’s success, particularly in the supply chain tech sector, where the market's pace and complexity requires an agile approach.
One of the primary advantages of an in-house marketing team is the depth of product and branding knowledge it brings as campaigns and other projects are executed and
mature. Unlike external agencies that juggle multiple clients and campaigns, an internal team is deeply immersed in your company's ethos. This intimate understanding allows for more informed and nuanced marketing strategies.
For instance, in the supply chain industry, where product details and technological advancements are intricate, having a team that lives and breathes these elements thoroughly means that marketing campaigns can be heavily targeted and effective.
Cohesion and Agility
Building an internal marketing team offers unmatched cohesion and agility. In-house teams are better positioned to respond quickly to changes in the market or shifts in company strategy. This agility is crucial in today’s fast-paced environment, where the competitive landscape can change overnight.
When the team is internal, there is a streamlined process for communication and decision-making. For example, if a new tech innovation or supply chain disruption occurs, an internal marketing team can quickly adapt the marketing strategy without the delays that often accompany external agency interactions. This rapid response capability not only enhances the effectiveness of marketing initiatives but also ensures that campaigns remain relevant and timely.
While agencies offer a range of services, they come with a cost that often includes overheads and markups. While I’ve had some decent agency experiences, many of them were plagued by concept misreads and lackluster projects that never really “got it right”, leading to numerous back and forth, timeline delays, and expanded costs. Building an internal team can be more cost-effective in the long term. By investing in internal talent, you avoid these additional expenses and can allocate resources that play into your strategic vision.
Additionally, internal teams can offer more flexibility in resource management. They can be scaled up or down based on the company’s needs without the need for lengthy negotiations or contract adjustments. This flexibility is especially beneficial for tech companies that may experience fluctuating demands or project scopes.
An internal team creates a culture of continuous learning and collaboration. Within a cohesive team, members share insights and ideas freely, which fosters innovation. This environment encourages creative problem-solving and allows for the development of cutting-edge marketing strategies that can set your company apart from competitors.
At ProShip, for example, the collaborative nature of our team has led to numerous successful campaigns that might not have emerged from a more segmented or externally managed approach. The synergy within the team drives collective brainstorming sessions, where diverse perspectives contribute to our overall strategic vision.
An internal team ensures strategic alignment from planning through execution to review. With a shared understanding of the company’s goals and values, internal marketers can craft and implement strategies that are consistent with the company’s broader objectives. This alignment is crucial for maintaining a unified brand message and achieving long-term marketing success.
For tech and supply chain companies, where strategic shifts can be frequent and impactful, having an internal team that is aligned with the company’s vision and can collaborate with other internal departments, such as Research & Development and Support teams, allows for seamless integration of marketing efforts with overall business goals. This unity enhances the effectiveness of marketing campaigns and contributes to a more cohesive brand presence.
Beyond the immediate advantages, building a resilient internal marketing team also contributes to long-term success. A team that grows and evolves together develops a strong sense of loyalty and commitment. This resilience is particularly valuable in industries like tech and supply chain, where navigating challenges and seizing opportunities requires a dedicated and adaptable workforce.
Reflecting on my own journey, I see how the lessons learned from collaborative environments have shaped our approach to team-building. The commitment to nurturing an internal team has not only driven our marketing success but also fostered a culture of collaboration and innovation that permeates every aspect of our business.
For tech and supply chain businesses navigating the complexities of the post-COVID landscape, the strategic decision to invest in a strong internal marketing team can be transformative. The benefits-ranging from enhanced product knowledge and strategic alignment to cost efficiency and agility-are significant.
Building and nurturing an internal team has been central to our success, and I firmly believe that it is a key driver of sustained excellence in today’s competitive parcel shipping technology market. This strategic approach has led to the ProShip marketing team never missing a pipeline KPI.
So, here’s my challenge to you. Don’t always believe that going with an agency is your only option. Don’t be fooled by what some suggest as a “resource saver” or an “extension to your team”. Although some agencies are wonderful at what they do, from experience they pale in comparison to having an embedded group.
Convinced? Next step? Don’t be afraid to hire those smarter than you. As General Electric CEO, Jack Welch, said, “If you’re the smartest person I the room, you’re in the wrong room.”

Nicole Zimmermann Founder & CEO | ZELOCIN & Partners LLC

Adynamic and versatile professional with over 20 years of experience in business excellence and leadership, Nicole Zimmermann, founder and CEO of ZELOCIN & Partners LLC USA and non-executive director at Financial House Ltd. UK, is one such inspiring woman leader who has been developing a remarkable knack to recognize opportunities. A proficient executive in the fields of marketing, communications, and change leadership. She creates effective go-to-market plans that emphasize customer experience journeys, digital marketing, needs-based segmentation, and value-based propositions. She is an ardent supporter of equity, diversity, and inclusion and serves as a global coach and mentor to exceptional individuals.

Her endeavor ZELOCIN & Partners LLC is a strategic marketing consulting organization that assists individuals and businesses in realizing their unmet growth potential. The Financial Times and Statista named her second venture, Financial House UK, one of Europe's 1000 fastest-growing companies in 2022. It includes creating a clear business plan, addressing your motivation factors, building your personal entrepreneurial brand, and figuring out how your enterprise will benefit society, communities, individuals, and other businesses.
Nicole's leadership style revolves around coaching and mentoring. She has dedicated her professional life to providing this support to her teams and talents at the companies she has worked for. Now that she is an entrepreneur, this is a service she offers. She considers herself fortunate to have had some great mentors throughout her career and feels that every entrepreneur can greatly benefit from having or serving as a mentor, since it allows you to grow as a person, learn from others, and acquire new skills.
Gender-related biases or stereotypes
Not so much in Nicole's coaching or consulting career, but joining a company board has presented its share of difficulties. Gender equality is a significant issue in boardrooms worldwide, with only 29% of roles held by women in firms in North America and Europe. Therefore, it needs influential allies in your network who recognize the value and abilities you can offer a company to facilitate these kinds of introductions. Her first board position with Financial House Ltd. UK emerged as a result of what she refers to as a "hand forward, hand back" mentality. She was able to connect with Financial House's owner, Alisher Abdukadyrov, through a former, dear colleague she had supported through some difficult times in his marketing team during his onboarding at the company they worked for. They both recognized the skills and experience she
could provide the business, which would grow rapidly and become one of the 1,000 fastest-growing firms in Europe by Statista and Financial Times in 2022.
Nicole’s Gender Equality in Entrepreneurship
We definitely have more opportunities, and fortunately, more women have more confidence in their ability to become business owners. In the US, 42% of companies are owned by women, compared to barely 1 in 3 globally. However, only 1.9% of total VC capital really flows to female business owners when it comes to investment funding. To level the playing field and enable women to sustainably expand their businesses globally, this must change.
Tech Evolutions Over the Years
There have been new technologies like machine learning, robotics, and now generative AI accessible to marketing to deliver excellence in customer experience, digitization, communication, loyalty, and retention. Marketing should continue to embrace these technologies as a customer-facing function in any business to enhance customer journeys, value propositions, and servicing across channels while streamlining processes and lowering costs. Such a move will aid in the transformation of their companies and result in even stronger market positioning and distinctiveness.
Nicole is actively looking forward to continuing her growth and expanding her business, specifically the board services portion of it, where she can provide advice and guidance to rapidly expanding scale-ups like Financial House UK or established corporations in their goals to expand as well as grow internationally and digitally transform their businesses to remain competitive.

Nicole believes using these five takeaways allows you to articulate your company’s vision, a clearer “the why”, to acquire new clients faster, and positioning your value propositions in a unique way while differentiating your content online in social channels.”.

Email marketing continues to be one of the most economical methods for engaging audiences and increasing conversions. Nevertheless, the manual management of campaigns can prove to be labor-intensive and ineffective. This is where email marketing automation plays a crucial role, as it is a strategy that not only conserves time but also enhances your return on investment (ROI).
To begin, select an appropriate email marketing automation platform. Options such as Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, HubSpot, and ConvertKit provide intuitive interfaces, automation capabilities, and performance analytics. The ideal tool should correspond with your business requirements, integrate seamlessly with your CRM, and expand as your audience increases.
Subsequently, categorize your email list. Automation proves to be most efficient when communications are customized for groups. Divide your contacts according to their behavior, interests, geographical location, or previous purchases. This enables you to deliver pertinent content to the appropriate individuals at the optimal moment, thereby enhancing open rates and engagement.
A fundamental aspect of automation is the use of trigger-based emails. These emails are dispatched automatically in response to user activities, including subscribing to a newsletter, leaving items in a shopping cart, or completing a purchase. Such timely and personalized communications result in increased conversion rates as they engage users at critical moments in their journey.
Another efficient strategy involves establishing automated email sequences or drip campaigns. These consist of a series of emails that are scheduled overtime to cultivate leads. For instance, once a user downloads a lead magnet, you can initiate a welcome series, followed by educational materials and promotional offers. This approach fosters trust and ensures your brand remains prominent in the minds of your audience.
Remember to consider A/B testing and analytics. Automation platforms enable you to evaluate subject lines, sending times, and content formats. Keep track of essential metrics like open rates, click-through rates, and conversions to optimize your campaigns for improved performance.
Additionally, make certain that your emails are optimized for mobile devices and adhere to regulations such as GDPR. Personalization, a tidy design, and explicit calls-to-action greatly improve the effectiveness of your campaign.
This is especially true when it comes to equipment. You will find that what works well today might fall short tomorrow as technology begins to evolve.
In summary, automating your email marketing enables you to provide your audience with targeted, timely, and relevant content while requiring minimal manual effort. By utilizing segmentation, personalization, and data-driven insights, companies can greatly enhance their marketing efficiency and return on investment (ROI) while fostering stronger relationships with customers.
