Thistle Ridge Ranch 2022 Bull Sale

Page 1

Welcome...

Welcome to our 16th Annual Bull Sale!

First off I’d like to thank all our customers and friends who have supported us throughout the years to make this, our 16th Annual Sale possible.Without all your help and support we couldn’t continue doing what we love for this long.

I’m not gonna claim this to be the best set of bulls we’ve ever brought to town, I think that’s up to each and every one of you to decide. I like them. Nice and consistent. Top to bottom I think we are bringing to town a bull that will suit a need. Lots of calving ease and maternal on the Angus side. Lower birthweight Char bulls with lots of jam and good dispositions.

We will be switching our Charolais bulls into a two year old program. This will be the 1st year offering two’s, while next year we expect to sell 10 yearlings and 20 two’s. After that we think it will be all two’s. We think by being able to grow those bulls out slower we can still offer a bull that will be big enough but not overfed and burnt out when he goes to breeding.

Feel free to come view the bulls any time before March 25th at the feedlot. The two year olds are at home. Please join us for lunch at Perlich prior to the sale, and we hope to see you there.

A note on our calving ease score.

I’ve seen this used before in other catalogs and I really like the idea. Not only does it give you a really good view point on how the bull should calve, but it’s also another way to make us accountable. So here’s how I score them.

Cow bull. Period.

Recommended primarily for cows. If you only have a few heifers mixed in you can get away with it, but do expect to probably help a few.

Heifer bull. I would personally use these bulls on my heifers with no second thoughts.

These bulls have generations of calving ease bred in, and should calve any type of heifer with absolutely no assistance.

**Please note that a 3 Star Charolais bull is rated as used on Charolais heifers. I am still not comfortable recommending them on Angus heifers that I don’t know. **

RED Cinder Captain Jack 593F BLY

4 sons sells

We didn’t breed him much his first year as we thought we might like to show him, but you can expect a lot more calving ease sons of Jack in next year’s sale.

2 sons sell

Signature has been a calving ease bull for us that comes in and lowers birth weights without sacrificing gains. Daughters are milking and are very attractive females with nice udders.

13 sons sell

Purchased from Kirk and Jill Wildman from Sangudo, we brought Jive in to breed all our red heifers these last 2 years. His calves are born easy with lots of vigor, and weigh their share come fall. He’s one of the easiest fleshing bulls we’ve ever used, and he’s out of a picture perfect outcross dam that goes back to the great HF Kodiak 5R bull.

A little too much birthweight for heifers, but this Jive calf comes from a great cow line who are all still producing in the herd. Keep the daughters.

We used the Orion 117G bull on our heifers last year and have really been impressed with the job he did. Deep made, sound bull out of an older good producing great uddered Escalade 318T daughter. Check out the hair coat on this guy.

TR Sharp Shooter 61J

This bull is the gain King this year. If you are planning on breeding a bunch of cows with the intent of adding pounds to your calf crop in the fall, he’s at the top of the list.

RED TR Jehu 63J

I’m probably a little hard on this guy ranking him as only a 2 Star calver, but we’ll stick to that. Great females in this bulls pedigree. Keep the daughters.

RED TR Jackal 70J

Great lookin cow bull. He’s going to mature into a large mammal.

TR Lightning 72J

TR Rapture 73J

Just a 72 Lb birthweight and he’s turning into much more than just a heifer bull. Keep an eye on him. Deer Creek Ranch and Bekkering Bros have brothers to him, and we have 2 daughters in the herd.

RED TR Chivas 80J

The Captain Jack bull is as good a natural breeder as you can find, servicing over 70 head each of his first 2 full breeding seasons. The dam of 80J is an Elite Angus dam with 5 bulls selling through our sale and 4 daughters retained in herd. No gambling here.

RED TR Kimura 81J

RED TR Journey 85J

Great choice for a heifer bull that can add some performance as well. Comes out of a very nice uddered U2 Mission 253A daughter who has consistently raised us gooders.

Disposition, fertility, and calving ease is what Captain Jack is showing us, so expect know different out of this 3 Star calving ease son. Dam of 155J had her 1st calf as a yearling and raised it well and bred back right on time.

RED TR Boot Jack 158J

Great female producer here. Dam is an outcross from our HF Prairie Smoke bull that goes back to Kodiak 5T. Dark red and extra-long.

RED TR Gone Viral 207J

Hard to find fault with this good young bull. If you calve a little later take advantage of this guy, you can breed a few heifers if need be, and his daughters will be outstanding.

RED TR Fincastle 215J

EASE RATING H

If it works for the new owner, I would like to hand breed this guy to a few cows this spring. His dam is a phenotypically perfect Angus cow who goes back to one of our herd matriarchs, Red Waterview D4H, a cow we purchased from the recently passed Glenn Elliott of Waterview Red Angus. We need more of those genetics back in the herd.

Red Gene Carriers...

A quick explanation on how the red gene is passed on

If you breed a black red gene carrier to black cows with no red gene, you will get black calves. If some of your cows are black, but do have the red gene, then you have a 25% chance of getting a red calf. If you breed a black red gene carrier to red cows then you have a 50% chance of getting red calves. If you breed a red bull, with black in its pedigree to red cows, they will always be red calves. Red bred to red will always be red.

We’re very happy with the length of these King Ranch bulls. We are calving heifers to him this year and our very impressed at the way they’re spitting them out. Nice bull here.

THRR Douglas Lake 76J

Excellent bull here with tons of growth, lots of shape and muscle, and a nice moderate 98 LB birthweight to boot.

THRR Scale Down 77J

CBT

Just an 80 Lb birthweight but being this is the lightest calf his dam has ever had I thought it safest to rank him as a 2 Star calving ease bull. He’s the 1st of our SOS Poundmaker 16G sons to sell, a bull we bought partnership on from Springside Farms.

Understanding Ultrasound

In order to use body composition EPD’s or ultrasound data to its full potential, a breeder must have an understanding of ultrasound terminology. Several of the ultrasound measurements are comparable to the familiar carcass measurements. The data is simply collected on yearling bullsa and heifers instead of market ready steers. Take a step back from looking at the numbers and become comfortable with the terminology.

UlTRAsoUnD CARCAss MeAsUReMenTs

RibFat/Backfat: An external fat measurement taken between the 12th and 13th rib reported in inches. Rib fat is the main trait that affects percent lean meat yield ie; A1, A2, A3 & A4. Percent lean meat yield is the calculation that estimates the percent of lean muscle on the carcass. For example, a lean meat yield of 60% on a 100lb carcass would have 600 lbs of lean muscle and 400 lbs of bone and fat.

Ribeye Area (ReA): An area measurement of the loin or ribeye muscle. Reported in square inches. While an increase in backfat wil lower the percent lean meat yield an increase in REA will raise the percent lean meat yield.

Rump Fat: An external fat measurement taken from an image collected between the hooks and the pins of the animal.Reported in inches. The rump fat measurement, coupled with the rib fat measurement will increase the accuracy of percent lean meat yield. Intramuscular Fat (%IMF)/Marbling: This measurement determines the amount of fat within the muscle. Reported in %. This measurement us used to determine the quality grade of the carcass
