Thistle Ridge Ranch 2018 Bull Sale

Page 1

Welcome to our 12th Annual Bull Sale!

It is with great pleasure that we invite friends and customers to help us celebrate our 12th sale. As I’m writing these notes we just got through another – 25 wind chill night. I keep reminding myself that tow truck drivers need to make money too

Another great set of bulls for your appraisal

The Charolais bulls are by far our best set to date. There’s a lot of moderate birthweight bulls in there, and some absolute rippers off of our 2 newest herd sires. The Black Angus bulls are off 2 main sires, CKM 138B, our go to heifer bull, and Young Dale Believe 46B, the $146,000 record high selling bull in Canada in 2015. The Red Angus bulls are the largest set of calving ease bulls we have ever had on offer. A full 75% of them can be safely used on 1st calving heifers

Just a reminder again that we are going with a 3 PM start this year. It gives us a few more hours to organize and sort bulls in the morning, and without Rob's help, we're going to need it. If you have any question feel free to give me or Carol, or any one of our capable staff of Bob, Darcy, John, Roger, and Mark a call. Thanks, and hope to see you March 23rd.

Rob Holowaychuk - March 29th, 1951 – October 4th, 2017

We lost a good friend and mentor this fall with the passing of Rob The hour long phone calls are missed and will be for years to come. I don’t know what I enjoyed more, discussing things we agreed on, or the arguments that we had over anything and everything from school zones to religion, sometimes even cattle The conversations always included a “ Listen Bucko”, “ I’m gonna help you out a minute” , “ Let me explain the real world to you”.

His help in running our bull sale successfully cannot be overstated Sale day mornings when my head started to wander, he was instrumental in keeping things calm, cool, and collected. He had a great eye for good cattle, and a soft spot in his heart for the little guy Lost but never forgotten “ Like and appreciate the kind”

A true calving ease master We used him on our heifers for 2 years with excellent results. Like all bulls used at Thistle Ridge the maternal qualities are second to none Look for a large group of sons next year, as we bred him to a lot of cows as well 6 sons sell. Co-owned with Moose Creek red Angus.

We used 39C on our second calvers

RED FLYING K Boss 95C

When I saw this bull at Flying K I knew we needed to secure a semen package on him. Tremendous foot under him, and excellent muscle shape. Lots of go to his calves as well Backed up again by a super cow family 4 sons sell.

owned by howe red Angus And eye hill stoCk FArM.

We made the mistake of not getting enough semen on Rolls Royce before breeding season last year, and his sons are noticeably absent from the sale line up this year A $60,000 purchase by U2 Ranch in our 2015 bull sale, he sired our high seller last year at $31,000 to Hill 70 Quantock As luck would have it, we had almost all heifer calves last year out of

Red Gene Carriers...

A quick explanation on how the red gene is passed on

If you breed a black red gene carrier to black cows with no red gene, you will get black calves. If some of your cows are black, but do have the red gene, then you have a 25% chance of getting a red calf If you breed a black red gene carrier to red cows then you have a 50% chance of getting red calves If you breed a red bull, with black in its pedigree to red cows, they will always be red calves Red bred to red will always be red

Doesn’t quite stack up as heavy of a performer, but I think with the quality of the Charolais bulls this year it’s only natural a few will be a little lower on their averages. Sound and functional best describes him.

THRR Exposure 178E

Many of these bulls will be ¾ brothers which is what we are really trying to do to offer a more consistent product 178E is another Lamont out of a Diablo deal, moderate framed and should be easy calving WINN MANS SKAGGS 663X

Nice indexes out of this bull with a 117 wean and a 108 gain Long Grass Ranching took home a good son of 192Y last year

This would be the only Statewide 133A son for sale this year If I could build bulls to have 94 lb birth weights and compete for an average with power bulls I’d take that all day long.

Don’t discount these younger bulls to heavily If you breed a little later they are going to continue their growth curves and be ready when you need

Understanding Ultrasound

In order to use body composition EPD’s or ultrasound data to its full potential, a breeder must have an understanding of ultrasound terminology Several of the ultrasound measurements are comparable to the familiar carcass measurements. The data is simply collected on yearling bullsa and heifers instead of market ready steers Take a step back from looking at the numbers and become comfortable with the terminology.

ultrAsound CArCAss MeAsureMents

ribFat/backfat: An external fat measurement taken between the 12th and 13th rib reported in inches Rib fat is the main trait that affects percent lean meat yield ie; A1, A2, A3 & A4 Percent lean meat yield is the calculation that estimates the percent of lean muscle on the carcass For example, a lean meat yield of 60% on a 100lb carcass would have 600 lbs of lean muscle and 400 lbs of bone and fat

ribeye Area (reA): An area measurement of the loin or ribeye muscle. Reported in square inches. While an increase in backfat wil lower the percent lean meat yield an increase in REA will raise the percent lean meat yield

rump Fat: An external fat measurement taken from an image collected between the hooks and the pins of the animal Reported in inches The rump fat measurement, coupled with the rib fat measurement will increase the accuracy of percent lean meat yield intramuscular Fat (%iMF)/Marbling: This measurement determines the amount of fat within the muscle. Reported in %. This measurement us used to determine the quality grade of the carcass.
