On behalf of my family, we welcome you to the Harvie Ranching Mature Simmental Cow Dispersal Sale. We have taken great pride in raising a strong set of Simmental females that have come from the Harvie Ranching program. As we close this chapter with this DISPERSAL, we look forward to launching our new cattle company, Harvie Crest Cattle Company in a bigger way. It only seems like yesterday that I was at the Parkhill Dispersal sale and purchased my first few Simmental cows, and what a great ride it's been. The ride isn't ending, we are just launching into a new chapter! Building a Simmental herd has been a great and rewarding challenge. Getting to meet the breeders and working with some of the best cattle in the world has made it an exciting experience. When Harvie Ranching decided to add another breed division to the mix, we had a vision of what we "thought" we wanted the herd to look like. We were looking to start from the ground up; feet and structural soundness were most important, and I truly believe we have done just that as you'll see the longevity in the cattle families in this DISPERSAL. We were aiming to build and develop strictly a red coloured herd, but then JDF Pepsi 61U came along; a homo polled and homo black bred heifer that was selling in the Checkers sale. I got on the phone to my father Ian and brother Cole and told them that this was a cow we had to own. And what a great decision that was!
Our cow herd is really hitting their stride and the predictability is a lot higher. We are not holding anything back, every mature cow sells including our top donor cows that are still producing superior cattle today. We have managed to raise some cattle that have really been breed changers including Harvie JDF Wallbanger 111Z and more recently Harvie Red Summit 54B. Harvie Red Summit 54B; a home grown bull that has captured the eyes of many, crowned Simmental National Grand Champion Bull and winning the Supreme show at FarmFair International. It is one of biggest accomplishments raising such a breeding tool, and he too sells in this DISPERSAL.
Simmental cattle hold a special place in both mine and Kerrie's hearts. Kerrie grew up around purebred Simmental cattle as her family has been in the purebred Simmental and commercial business for over forty years. Many of you know, Kerrie's father Barry Bennett was the General Manager of the Canadian Simmental Association some years ago so it’s been nice to get his advice and analyze pedigrees.
We are extremely excited about launching our new Harvie Crest Cattle brand and partnering with KT Ranches, both sharing the passion for finding and raising elite Simmental, Black Angus and SimAngus. With ourselves retaining all Simmental bred heifers and heifer calves from the Harvie Ranching herd and Kevin & Tracey Carson purchasing some top end cattle all over North America in the past few years, we are sure we will be able to offer an elite set of females and bulls for many years to come.
We wanted to add something special to the offering that the commercial cattleman could get excited about. We invited our good friends Jay and Kari Sibbald, of Compass Ranch, to be part of this event and asked if they would be willing to consign a group of 40 commercial bred females to the sale. Earlier this year we partnered with them and used some of their breeding heifers as part of our embryo/recip program and were delighted with the results and the quality of the stock.
Going forward, we wish Ian & Marlene, Cole, Jill and their two young girls the best of luck continuing on the family legacy with Harvie Ranching, focusing on breeding Polled Hereford and Charolais genetics. For 2019, we will have on offer the Simmental bull calves in the annual bull sale together.
At most dispersal sales, you buy the cattle "As is, where is". But not this sale. We are confident in our cattle and will stand behind all cattle sold. In 2016, Red Summit was slapped National Grand Champion Simmental Bull and won the Supreme Bull Show at FarmFair International. That was truly an exciting time for our family as so many of us we know strive to be crowned this prestigeous title and win a Dodge Truck!! The title and truck was awesome, but that was small potatoes compared to what he has done as a breeding bull! In the heifer pen, Red Summit has been a dream to calve as they’ve been problem free. Licious 9003W is a big time producing cow who stems from one of the most dominating cow families in the Simmental breed. 9003W has always been a favourite of the many visitors that have done pasture tours; a cow whom is big bodied with lots of eye appeal. As you study this donor, she has stood the test of time. From a great big foot to a beautiful udder, Licious 9003W has always calved early bringing in one of the very best calves each year When we were building the Simmental herd and toured Westway Farms, we saw the Licious cows and knew right then we wanted them to be apart of our program. Harvie Ranching bought the first two daughters they sold; 9026W and 9003W, both have not disappointed.
If you ask us our opinion of what cow to build a herd around, Ms Pepsi 20B would be a serious contender. Since day one, she has always been a standout individual and has been on the no sell list. So only in a sale like this can you buy a DONOR like her! There is nothing we don’t admire about her; she is not only one of the best numbered cows in our herd but she is also one of the elite producers. This year alone, her natural bull calf is one of the very best black calves we’ve ever raised while 2 of her embryo heifer calves are on the very front end of our replacement pen. Wanda 98Z might be one of the very best cows we’ve ever raised. She is flawless in design and has a history of producing top selling bulls and donor females. If you ask us what one of the first things we look for in a new donor cow or herdsire is, our answer will be a proven cow family. Black Angel comes out of one of the most prolific cows in the Canadian Donors program and as you look around at the top breeders in the country, many are trying to get a piece of the Black Angel genetics. 5222C has had a very successful donor career flushing 42 embryos the first go. Her embryos have been very sticky and have averaged $1500 when sold on the public market. Her stand out daughters in the replacement program will be easly found. This is one of Kerrie’s favourite cows and is not very happy about letting her go so early in her career.
