Welcome to bull buying season! During this time of year among the chaos of calving and extreme weather changes this welcome letter forces me to take some time and reflect on our program and the direction we are headed within our industry. I sit back and think about what to write and although there is enough bad stuff to harp on I wanted to focus on the positives that we have in our lives and what I am passionate about, in a nut shell it would be my family and our cows.
Although I did not want to bring up the “C” word, the fact of the matter is that COVID did bring on some changes to our operation and how we market our bulls. In previous years we hosted you at the Olds Regional Exhibition for our annual sale, but with the restrictions we decided to make the move to a STRICTLY ONLINE SALE. The fact that we still live in very uncertain times we were weary to host at a public facility and unfortunately do not have a large enough indoor space to entertain a live sale at the ranch. We feel this is the best option for us at this time and it was a huge decision that was not taken lightly.
This year we have added a OPEN HOUSE on March 26 for any one who would like to come and appraise the bull offering in person. We would love for you to come between 12
noon and 5 pm, have some snacks and refreshments and talk bulls! If you are unable to make it on the 26th for the Open House but would still like to view the offering in person please give me a call and we can arrange a time that works for you. Visitors are welcome anytime.
This year’s offering has a combination of calving ease and performance bulls for your appraisal. As we have done in the past, we AI extensively for our first month of breeding. Bulls like President, Grazer, Silverstar, Oklahoma and Rainfall were selected for our heifers by providing calving ease for our customers. Our herdsire Riverstone Resource 51D is a calving ease specialist. All of the fall born bulls are sired by 51D and these bulls hit this market spot on.
Bonknote, Cowboy Up, Renovation, Primo, Emblem, Bravo and Colossal were intended more for cows in our program. Just because we label them performance bulls make no mistake they are also bulls that calve easy with no problems... or they would not be in our program. I have always said that you as a customer have to match the bull to your cows. Our “cow” bull still have nice low birth weights and I have complete faith in them to provide that for you. Every calf is weighed at birth so please rest assured these are the truest
birth weights you can have. Also at birth we give 1cc Excede, 1 Tortrazul pill, 1 First Defense pill, 1 nasal PMH and 1 nasal Inforce. Since we started this program a few years ago we have seen incredible gains in health and performance. Our females are cycling regularly, our bulls are not only developing physically better but our productivity as far as semen tests, scrotal circumstances have evolved. I love seeing the enhancement in the bulls year to year but this year when I see the half sisters to this group of bulls make a huge jump. I am very excited.
This year you will notice as you flip through the catalog we have included both maternal and paternal brothers to the offering that have sold in the past couple of years. We want to give you a glimpse of the consistency and productivity of our cowherd. They are little snapshots of past production of the cows and their predictability.

We will be hosting a open house on Saturday, March 26th from 12 noon until 5pm at the ranch for your opportunity to come and view the bulls in person and enjoy some snacks and refreshments. Viewing is also available any other time prior to the sale, just give us a call to arrange a time. We are located 15 km west of Olds, AB.

2. After you are at the FarmGate Timed auction site - farmgatetimedauctions.ca, click the LOGIN/REGISTRATION button.
First time FarmGate users:
- First time users will select the REGISTER button from this page. Fill out the registration form to sign up for a free user account and it allows you to select a username and password for use on all Farm Gate Timed auctions. (please note due to some of the text notification features the FarmGate Time Auction Site requires a new account separate account from your DLMS Live sale site)
- After you create your FarmGate account you will receive a text message with a pin code to verify your account.
- On your first log in to FarmGate Timed auctions we recommend you go to your profile and confirm your notifications are set to YES. This allows the site to send you text and/or email notifications when you are out bid and if there is activity on your favorite lots.
Returning FarmGate users:
- If you have used Farm Gate Timed auctions in the past simply enter your user name and password to continue. After you have logged in you are able to browse the timed auctions on DLMS FarmGate Timed Auctions.
3. How to Bid
Now that you are logged in and your account phone number / email is verified you are able to bid on an upcoming sale. Simply find the lot you are interested in bidding on. After you have found the lot there are 2 options for bidding on the lot.
- Place Next Bid – to place the next bid on the item, you see the amount in the first box, you simply click the “Place Bid” button and after you review the bid and agree to the terms and conditions your bid will be placed.
- Max Bid Amount – to place a max bid you put your max bid in the second box listed as “Max Bid” on the item, and then click the “Place Bid” button and after you review the bid and agree to the terms and conditions your bid will be placed as the next bid. With the Max Bid placed the computer will then keep you as the high bidder to the max amount you have placed. This can be a great feature if you are not able to give 100% attention to the sale close out and protect your interest so you do not miss out on any lots you want to purchase. The Max Bid amount is completely confidential from the seller during the sale process. Example of How the Max Bid Works - If the lot has a $2000 bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $3500 into the system, the computer will bid $2100 for you but if some one else bids $2200, the computer will again bid for you, this time at
$2300. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $3500. If another bidder is on at $3600, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and bidding again or moving your attention to a second lot of interest. Please note that in some cases a lot value can change very quickly if 2 max bids are placed on the same lot competing against each other.
4.. Watch List Feature
If you have items in multiple auctions or only a few from the same auction that you want to watch with out having to scroll through the entire list you can add the lots to your watchlist. On each lot you will see the “eye” button beside the bid button, by clicking this “watchlist” Icon that item is added to your personal watchlist for easy viewing of just your favorite lots in this sale or on the entire site.
5. Sale Ending / Closeout
Most FarmGate Timed Auction sales close racehorse style with extended bidding.
What is Racehorse Style Close?
Racehorse style sale close is when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding.
How will Extended Bidding works?
When we get to the close out end time the clock for close out extends with any bid placed with less than 5 min on the clock. This type of extended bidding turns the end time to more of a soft time. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and give all bidders the same time to make a decision. Always follow the clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in.
6. Bidding Close & Follow-up
After the clock has gone to “ENDED” and no bidding has occurred for 5 min the computer will declare the sale finished. Following the close typically within 24 hours of the sale close the sale consignor will contact all winning bidders to arrange payment, transfer of pedigrees and delivery/Pick up of your lot. Or as the winning bidder you can contact the sale consignor / sale manager to confirm payment instructions.
Please make sure that your account info is up-to-date and correct if you are the winning bidder of a lot as this is how the billing is sent to Sale manager and/or Sale consignor.

All bulls sell under the Standard Breeders Guarantee and Guidelines recommended by the Canadian Angus Association. Copies are available upon request.
BOARD ON SALE BULLS
We can keep the bulls until delivery. We would like all bulls picked up or delivered by May 1 unless previous arrangements have been made. These bulls must be insured.
BULL BREEDING GUARANTEE
All bulls will be semen tested and veterinary inspected prior to the sale.
US BUYERS
US buyers can take advantage of the Canadian dollar. $1000 CA = Approx. $800 US. Sale exchange rate will be announced on sale day.
RIGHT TO SEMEN

Emblem was one of the most talked about bulls of the 2019 spring sale season and settled as the second top selling bull at SAV. He has an absolute standout phenotype and presence, combined with length, volume and shape. Emblem combines the foundation Emblynette cow family with Blackcap May 4136, the most recognizable beef cow in the world.

PF Oklahoma 6625 is one of the most complete calving ease bulls with maternal greatness and stacked EPD’s in the breed. Utilize OKLAHOMA to increase visual quality while adding impressive maternal lineage as he is out of one of the very best donors in the industry. He is strong footed, sound structured, large scrotal, smooth made and nearly impossible to find a hole in for an exciting up and coming calving ease prospect. Genetically, he is intriguing by representing two of the great cow families in the industry with the Rita on the top side and the world renowned Henrietta Pride on the bottom side.

This is an exceptional bull on paper and even more impressive in terms of his phenotype. He is an outcross option to most of the popular Angus pedigrees right now, and will move your herd in the right direction. We purchased 228E (Rusty) from the 2018 Rust Mountain View Ranch Bull Sale. We were impressed with his phenotype and genotype and felt he could make a positive impact in our program. He is out of the dominant 1299 cow who is an outstanding donor in the Rust program.

Colossal was one of the most sought after bulls in the 2018 spring bull sale season. He expresses unmatched bold robust rib structure and mass with an exceptional top 1% ranking for CE. Colossal looks to have more growth than his sire and phenotypically the stoutest-featured son of 316 available to the market and his Dam and Granddam are females with exceptional phenotype and udder quality

Bravo has one of the most balanced EPD profiles available, being extremely low birth with above average growth.

Silver Star’s progeny are deep ribbed and with added capacity, combined with that he is an excellent double digit calving ease option with added eye appeal and balance. Silver Star is a very strong footed, big structured and sound bull. Viewing is also available any other time prior to the sale, just give us a call to arrange a time. We are located 15 km west of Olds, AB.
