SETTING UP A SMART TECHNOLOGY CLINIC

THE AUTOMATED FUTURE IS HERE, AND ALTHOUGH IT MAY NOT BE EVERYTHING THE JETSONS PREDICTED, TODAY’S SMART TECHNOLOGY CAN AUTOMATE A LOT OF OUR EVERYDAY TASKS , IMPROVING PRODUCTIVITY, DECREASING COSTS AND ENHANCING THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE.

What is a smart clinic?

In the simplest of terms, it is a clinic that uses technology to automate and link our everyday and specialised appliances/ electronic tools to make tasks easier.

This can be as simple as using a digital assistant to play music, turn on your security or keep track of your upcoming appointments. Or it could be as advanced as automating your consultations by dimming lights as you enter your consulting room, turning on a spotlight and ensuring that your equipment is ready to use and in stand-by mode, so as not to compromise a sterile environment. With digital assistants all being handsfree, these can be set up to only require a single voice command, set on a timer or automated depending on a condition such as your current location.

Why a smart clinic?

For most people, there are multiple driving forces behind creating a smart clinic. These include simplifying tasks, improving security and to save energy and money.

Smart thermostats can quickly and precisely automate the heating, cooling and use of blinds/window coverings in premises. Other products such as connected lights and appliances can be programmed to use less energy by powering down when not in use or to be operating when power is cheapest.

Additionally, smart devices make it very easy to improve your security. Connected lights, cameras and doorbells can help make premises much safer. Finally, tedious, repetitive or easy to forget tasks can be taken out of your hands with connected and automated devices. Vacuum cleaners and other cleaning devices like washing machines, autoclaves and dishwashers can be programmed to start automatically, or a fridge that orders supplies online when it senses that they’re low are available now. These kinds of products should be high on anyone’s smart clinic checklist.

Where do you start?

Google Assistant, Siri (Apple) and Alexa (Amazon) are the most common assistants in use. There is a range of technologies available across all of these platforms, with many of them capable of working on all three and to suit almost every environment.

With most hardware required able to be retrofitted into existing infrastructure, you don’t need to rebuild or renovate existing premises to start on your smart clinic update.

While it’s entirely possible to have lights and other smart accessories controlled by your phone without using one of the digital assistants on offer, it can make for a cumbersome experience. To make the most of your smart experience, it is easier to have a hub that easily allows you to see and operate controls from one central location and to use your phone as an adjunct to this. Google, Amazon and a host of hardware manufacturers offer devices specifically designed for this.

When setting up smart premises, it’s best to start small and have a plan for expansion. This may initially include automating your lights and security. Once this is set up, you can include automating music, air-conditioning/ heating, your treatment rooms and the equipment in them.

So, which assistant is the best?

Currently Apple is playing catch-up in this area with their HomeKit. Siri offers fewer (but ever-growing) compatible automation products than the others. However, if you’re in an Apple environment, both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa offer apps for iOS and MacOS. If you’re in a Windows/Android environment, you’re restricted to Google Assistant and Alexa as Siri is strictly Apple only.

However, a new, universal smart home standard, the product of a multi-year joint effort amongst industry giants, including Apple, Google and Samsung, ‘Matter’

‘FOR MOST PEOPLE, THERE ARE MULTIPLE DRIVING FORCES BEHIND CREATING A SMART CLINIC. THESE INCLUDE SIMPLIFYING TASKS, IMPROVING SECURITY AND TO SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY.’
‘WITH NEW DEVICES BEING RELEASED ON WHAT SEEMS LIKE A DAILY BASIS, AND THE MATURITY OF THE CURRENT TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE, THERE IS NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT TO TAKE THE PLUNGE AND MAKE YOUR CLINIC SMARTER.’

aims to help your smart home devices play a little nicer together and a lot of devices already in people’s homes will be easier to sync up with the standard after a software update.

The core functionality for all three assistants works in the same way. You require an account on whichever platform you choose, and apps either from the platform provider or from the hardware provider are installed and utilised to operate the equipment. The ‘Assistant’ app then integrates the functionality of all of your devices into a single voice operated location.

So, as an example, with lighting you can buy some Philips Hue light bulbs and install them in your fittings. Add a Philips Hue Bridge to your wireless router so that the light bulbs can talk to the internet and each other. Install the Philips Hue app onto your smart phone, and authorise Google Assistant to control the app. This whole process will take approximately 10 minutes, depending on the number of light bulbs being installed. But once completed, you then have complete control over those lights from anywhere in the world where you have a mobile phone service.

The easiest equipment to retrofit is any standard light fitting, or any device that can be left on and switched off and on with a smart power board.

What are the best smart devices available now?

Here are some recommendations for the best smart devices to bring your clinic into the future and give it a muchneeded upgrade.

Smart speaker options

One part speaker and one part virtual assistant, smart speakers from Amazon (Echo, powered by Alexa), Google (Nest, powered by Assistant) and Apple (HomePod, powered by Siri) make it easy to link up a variety of different smart home/office accessories that you can then easily control with your voice. Depending on how complicated your setup is, you may even get away with using just your phone and a smart

speaker to control your entire smart clinic experience. These little sound boxes give you the ability to quickly look up information, schedule calendar invitations, play music, control your smart clinic, shop online and so much more. All with the power of your voice.

Smart speakers are also being made by some of the best hifi creators in the industry, including Bose, Sonos and JBL. So you don’t have to skimp on the quality (or volume) of the sound and multiple speakers can be programmed to play the same stream or unique sound in different rooms or areas.

Smart hub options

These usually combine a less acoustically desirable speaker with a screen so that you can not only hear Alexa/Siri/Google Assistant respond to your request but you can see the information as well. Google and Amazon both offer a branded hub, where the Apple option will see you relying on your iPad.

Using Google’s offering as a simple case, Google Nest Hub is your hardware while Google Assistant is the voice that responds to your queries.

Smart lighting

Philips offers a range of products in their Hue brand. These include light bulbs, strip lighting and complete fittings for indoor and outdoor use that allow you to switch them on and off by voice command, program on and off times, dim and change the colour of the lighting. They also have wireless motion sensors that allow you to automatically switch lighting on and off. As well, wireless switches and dimmers are available for those who want to give access to everyone.

Smart doorbell

Ring Video Doorbells work wirelessly and have battery-operated options to allow you to put a doorbell anywhere to see and respond to all visitors on your phone or hub, whether you’re at the clinic or not.

Smart locks

Do you need to let a cleaner in after hours? A smart lock with a smart doorbell

will let you allow access to visitors automatically. The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock fits into a standard deadbolt and has an optional keypad, allowing you to set up access for different regular visitors, and to keep track of when they arrive. The app allows you to lock and unlock the door with a single tap or voice command. You can also set up automation, to set the lock to automatically lock/unlock when you leave a 60 metre radius or lock after a certain period of time.

Last but not least, you can set “smart alerts” to tell you when the door is locked or unlocked, when the door is left ajar, when the door is automatically locked or unlocked, and so on. This allows you to keep tabs on the status of your lock, if that’s something you want to do.

Smart security camera

The Arlo Pro 4 security cameras connect directly to your wi-fi, and you can set up as many cameras as you need, both indoor and out, to secure your whole premises.

You can stay connected to your clinic from anywhere with live video and audio

and receive instant alerts on your phone when motion is detected with video stored on the cloud.

The cameras can be automated to activate at particular hours (eg, outside of business hours) or when the users’ devices are all outside of a determined radius from the premises. No more forgetting to switch on or off your security system.

Smart cleaning

iRobot Roomba S9+ has a three-stage cleaning system that cleans several floor types, navigates around objects, responds to voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant, and runs for an hour of continuous cleaning. It has strong suction and an effective spinning side brush along with the ability to be programmed and controlled from an app.

Smart plug

Smart plugs like the Belkin WeMo WiFi not only allow you to turn any appliance into a smart one but also allow you to track and optimise the power that you’re using. Handy for any device that you need to control remotely!

Smart smoke detector

The Nest Protect detects both smoke and carbon monoxide, and when it does pick up something, it will not only sound an alarm but will also tell you which room the alert is coming from, and the nature of the alert. An LED ring on the bottom of the alarm also changes coloru, giving you a visual cue.

If you have more than one in your clinic, and one goes off, the others will too, alerting you to the location of the fire.

The Nest Protect also works with a wide range of smart home devices. For example, in the event of an emergency, the Nest can automatically turn on your lights, making it easier for you to get out of your clinic.

Use your smart security camera to check on your clinic when your Nest Protect has been activated. If it’s a false alarm, they can be turned off using the app, saving you having to drive back to reset.

Smart clinic automation

While each of these devices in isolation can improve how you operate your clinic, it’s in your Assistant’s ability to automate processes that can make your clinic very smart.

As you approach in the morning, your security device will recognise your phone approaching. This can trigger lights, air-conditioning and music to switch on (and maybe your coffee machine could start warming up also).

If you need to close urgently during the day, you can be safe in the knowledge that critical equipment will switch off, that your security system will be armed and your doors locked. When you’re on holidays, you can be assured that your premises are secure and that should disaster strike, you’re able to call the emergency services before jumping in the car to be on site.

With new devices being released on what seems like a daily basis, and the maturity of the current technology available, there is no time like the present to take the plunge and make your clinic smarter.

PASSIVE INCOME – THE HOLY GRAIL OF EVERY PRACTICE

ADDING DIFFERENT REVENUE STREAMS TO YOUR PRACTICE CAN HELP YOU MAXIMISE PROFIT WITH MINIMAL EFFORT REQUIRED BY YOU.

As a doctor and business owner, there’s a real likelihood you can develop “key person syndrome”, where you are so vital to a particular function that it can’t occur without you.

The addition of revenue streams to your practice has the potential to produce countless benefits: more satisfied patients; more money generated; and more time for you to spend doing the things you love the most.

Identifying, analysing and making changes to business processes can streamline your practice and earn you money while you’re away from the practice. There is an increasing trend towards diversifying practices to include ancillary revenue-generators such as medispa treatments (including laser hair removal, microdermabrasion and peels) and retail products, with provision to cross-promote services. Employing staff members to effectively “own” these business offshoots is the key to allow you to take a step back – all the while generating passive income.

ADDING NEW REVENUE STREAMS

When adding a different stream – be it new capital equipment / technology, skincare products, medispa or wellness centres – there are certain questions to always keep at the forefront of any decision-making. Ask yourself:

• Is there demand for the procedure?

• Will it add to the current patient experience?

• How will it affect my time? Can it be administered by existing staff?

• Is it lucrative?

• When will I break even?

• How will I market it?

You don’t need to do everything at once. Start small by adding one new procedure or service at a time.

CAPITAL EQUIPMENT

Non-surgical cosmetic services such as laser skin resurfacing, radio frequency (RF) skin tightening and energy-assisted

‘ASK

YOURSELF: IS THERE DEMAND FOR THE PROCEDURE? HOW WILL IT AFFECT MY TIME? WHEN WILL I BREAK EVEN? AND HOW WILL I MARKET IT? .’

non-surgical body contouring have reinvented the cosmetic enhancement industry and become a mainstay of many successful practices.

INTRODUCING RETAIL STREAMS

‘IDENTIFYING, ANALYSING AND MAKING CHANGES TO BUSINESS PROCESSES CAN STREAMLINE YOUR PRACTICE AND EARN YOU MONEY WHILE YOU’RE AWAY FROM THE PRACTICE.’

Slowly but surely, those procedures that were once the domain of the beauty industry are moving into the medical arena. Treatments such as high-end facials, IPL and laser hair removal can be easily incorporated into cosmetic practice. Oftentimes, this will not only attract an entire new patient population but also incur a conversion rate –where patients coming in for “beauty” procedures begin to explore more invasive options on offer.

Ancillary medispa treatments not only generate impressive results – and boost patient loyalty – but they also have some serious earning potential. Typically, these procedures can be performed by a nurse or skincare consultant – and signify an earning arm of the business that is separate from you, the surgeon.

When considering purchasing or leasing a new piece of equipment, make sure you do your due diligence: will the additional revenue created pay for the machinery, and when? Is there a market for the procedure?

Patients are not always aware of their need for proper active skincare. This presents an enormous untapped opportunity for you to train your staff to become proactive, sales-savvy educators.

By educating patients on those ingredients specific to their skin concerns – for example, wrinkle reduction, pigmentation lightening or texture smoothing – the “selling” side of skincare is effectively eliminated. With the rise in popularity of non-surgical cosmetic treatments, patients are increasingly taking a proactive approach to anti-ageing. With the right products, and a team of educated, friendly staff, this proactive attitude can be leveraged to encompass skincare.

HOW TO SUCCEED IN THE WELLNESS ECONOMY

HOLISTIC MIND AND BODY TREATMENTS ARE RESHAPING THE INDUSTRY AND BLURRING THE LINES BETWEEN COSMETIC MEDICINE AND GENERAL WELLNESS. IS YOUR PRACTICE POISED TO REAP THE BENEFITS OF THE WELLNESS ECONOMY?

The “wellness economy” was valued at US$4.5 trillion in 2018, according to the Global Wellness Institute (GWI). And in the midst of a global pandemic, it’s safe to hedge that this figure has well and truly increased. More than ever, people are prioritising self-care, taking health into their own hands and spending money on their wellbeing. 2020 shed

new light on what it means to be well.

‘Once upon a time, our contact with wellness was occasional: we went to the gym or got a massage,’ says Katherine Johnston, senior research fellow at GWI. ‘But this is changing fast; a wellness mindset is starting to permeate the global consumer consciousness, affecting people’s daily decision-making

— whether food purchases, a focus on mental wellness and reducing stress, incorporating movement into daily life, environmental consciousness, or their yearning for connection and happiness.

‘WELLNESS, FOR MORE PEOPLE, IS EVOLVING FROM RARELY TO DAILY, FROM EPISODIC TO ESSENTIAL, FROM A LUXURY TO A DOMINANT LIFESTYLE VALUE. AND THAT PROFOUND SHIFT IS DRIVING POWERFUL GROWTH.’

‘Wellness, for more people, is evolving from rarely to daily, from episodic to essential, from a luxury to a dominant lifestyle value. And that profound shift is driving powerful growth.’

What is wellness and the wellness economy?

The GWI describes wellness as ‘the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health’.

It should be noted that GWI considers wellness to be an individual pursuit – we have self-responsibility for our own choices, behaviours and lifestyles – but it is also significantly influenced by the physical, social and cultural environments in which we live. Wellness is often confused with terms like health, wellbeing and happiness.

While there are common elements among them, GWI clarifies that wellness is distinguished by not referring to a static state of being (ie, being happy, in good health or a state of wellbeing). Rather, wellness is associated with an active process of being aware and making choices that lead toward an outcome of optimal holistic health and wellbeing – an amalgamation of many

components that should ideally work in harmony.

The wellness industry itself encompasses activities that promote physical and mental wellbeing – from yoga, meditation and clean eating to anti-ageing and beauty, spa retreats and wellness tourism.

The wellness economy is described by the GWI as ‘industries that enable consumers to incorporate wellness activities and lifestyles into their daily lives’.

‘As people incorporate more of the wellness values into their lifestyle, our interaction with the wellness economy is also becoming less episodic and more intentional, more integrative, and more holistic,’ says GWI senior research fellow Ophelia Yeung.

‘In the last few years, wellness has become a dominant lifestyle value that is profoundly changing consumer behaviour and changing the markets. In the face of longer lifespans, and rising chronic disease, stress and unhappiness, we only see growth for wellness ahead,’ she says.

Personal care, anti-ageing and beauty make up the lion’s share of the wellness economy, with more than $1 trillion. The spa economy, worth upwards of $120 billion, is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the past few years as more people find themselves drawn to selfcare oases as an anecdote to fast-

paced, over-connected lifestyles.

According to Yeung, the different sectors of the wellness economy – beauty, nutrition, fitness, spa, etc –increasingly tend to blend together, with individual markets becoming less siloed and more interconnected.

The marriage of aesthetic medicine and wellness

Wellness has disrupted the cosmetic enhancement and beauty industries. In order to look good, you have to feel good. No longer is the focus only on external measures to enhance beauty. Instead there is a shift to a more holistic approach, including a stronger desire for non-surgical and autologous treatments, for ongoing prevention rather than repair and for devices that integrate smart technology into cosmetic treatments.

In an article for PRIME magazine, global aesthetic consultant Wendy Lewis says many people are looking for outlets that offer a nurturing experience to calm their nerves and make them feel good about themselves again. ‘There is a robust interest for health and wellness treatments and services that presents as an opportunity for aesthetic practices,’ she says. ‘Wellness programs can include enhanced services that may be presented as ideal adjuncts for medical aesthetics.’

But before you start to re-invent your practice, Lewis advises to first find out what services and additions your current patients might actually appreciate. Sending out a wellness survey may be a worthwhile initiative.

‘They may enjoy an occasional yoga class or meditation session, or relaxing signature facials and therapeutic massages may be more in line with their goals,’ says Lewis. Personal interaction is an integral component of the wellness industry that relies on some level of physical touching. Thus, in a postpandemic atmosphere, it is necessary to carefully consider how to offer the services your clients want while keeping

them and your staff safe.’

If you don’t already, consider adding spa services and treatment menus that are synergistic with your cosmetic medicine treatments. The aim is to convey a sense of calm and pampering for your patients – it is this relaxation aspect of spas that draws people in.

In an aesthetic practice, short of having a separate facility, a medispa focus may consist of a few treatment rooms and well-trained aestheticians and therapists who can create the right environment and deliver what your clients need.

Lewis stresses that your existing facility needs to effectively support the patient experience you are striving for, while also providing the essentials needed to run an efficient operation. Poor planning and design, inadequate patient privacy and flow, and lack of storage can all negatively the patient experience and impact your bottom line, she says. Your facility’s design should visually communicate your concept and offer a sensory experience. Choose services and products that are consistent with your brand and address the needs of your patients. For example, nutritional counselling, therapeutic massage and signature facials are popular in certain markets.

‘Develop signature combination treatments that will serve as the foundation of your brand,’ offers Lewis. ‘These may include customised programs with injectables and laser and light-based procedures, as well as branded layered services combined with home-care products. Look for skincare ranges that offer back bar sizes for specialty products to combine them with in-office peels and facials.’

The ultimate goal is to create a one-stop destination for your patients’ personal aesthetic and wellbeing needs, delivering a pampering as well as therapeutic experience – and ensuring your practice remains relevant in the skyrocketing wellness economy.

‘THE ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO CREATE A ONESTOP DESTINATION FOR YOUR PATIENTS’ PERSONAL AESTHETIC AND WELLBEING NEEDS, DELIVERING A PAMPERING AS WELL AS THERAPEUTIC EXPERIENCE – AND ENSURING YOUR PRACTICE REMAINS RELEVANT IN THE SKYROCKETING WELLNESS ECONOMY.’

THINKING ABOUT BUYING NEW MEDICAL EQUIPMENT?

IMPORTANT TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN CONSIDERING CAPITAL PURCHASES.

1. SMART FINANCING

While paying cash can be attractive, it has the drawback of cutting into your working capital which you may need for other expenditures. Look at finance incentives directly offered from the device company, or for a typically more personalised approach than the big banks, consider a specialist medical equipment finance broker. Look for low-rate, low-cost finance packages with flexible repayment options to suit your individual circumstances. Also consider capitalising equipment costs over time and recording equipment as an asset to be expensed in future periods. These capitalised costs can include all of the logistics costs associated with getting the equipment into your facility.

2. LOOK FOR THE WARRANTY

Many manufacturers and/or distributors offer maintenance service and warranty contracts for their equipment. Read through the contract, but in most cases these warranties are well worth the minimal added fees.

3. PLAN FOR SPACE AND DEVELOPMENT

Each treatment room in an aesthetic practice has its own unique demands.

Before you assign new equipment to a room, ensure you have efficient space that enhances patient and staff satisfaction and, of course, utilisation of the device.

4. COLLABORATE WITH YOUR DEVICE COMPANY

Your rep should have the knowledge and experience to help evaluate your clinic’s needs, along with the total ownership costs of medical equipment. They can also help ensure everything conforms to regulations, so take advantage of their expertise.

5. ANTICIPATE THE NEW ARRIVAL

Plan ahead and work with your vendor to avoid premature deliveries of your medical equipment. This will prevent potential damage and the costs associated with storage until the equipment can be delivered to its end-site. Conversely, equipment that is delivered too late can interrupt your patient care and cause expensive workflow delays.

6. PREVENT PATIENT/ WORKFLOW INTERRUPTIONS

This point bears repeating; ensure that the delivery and set-up of all medical equipment purchases are timed effectively. Ideally, you’ll have this done just before opening or closing or other

downtime periods when there is a minimal amount of patients in the building.

7. INVOLVE THE APPROPRIATE STAFF MEMBERS

Any staff member who will be regularly interacting with the new equipment should participate in the entire capital equipment procurement process. This will help you avoid purchasing equipment with expensive, unneeded features or functions, as well as giving you the appropriate feedback for future options.

8. INSPECT AND TEST BEFORE OWNERSHIP TRANSFER

Before signing the final papers, make sure you inspect the equipment. This should include an electrical safety inspection as well as testing for operations before you give the final affirmation.

9. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TRAINING

Many manufacturers and distributors offer on-site one-on-one or group training to help ensure you maximise the results of your new device and offer safest treatment protocols to your patients.

KEY QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN PURCHASING NEW EQUIPMENT OR PRODUCTS

• Is it going to cannibalise another service I already have?

• Is it an improvement to what I already have?

• Is there a consumable? How much is that consumable?

• Is the system reliable?

• What do colleagues say about the device?

• How much space does it occupy?

• How much inventory is it going to require?

• What would needed service entail? Who provides it?

• Is there marketing support?

HOW TO MAXIMISE YOUR ROI

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CAPITALISING ON YOUR CAPITAL EQUIPMENT. WORDS BY WENDY LEWIS.

Energy-based systems are usually the biggest purchasing decisions made by aesthetic practitioners. Yet many clinics fail to apply basic sound business principles when it comes to determining the cost and potential return on investment (ROI) of these systems. It stands to reason that when comparing results between lasers, for example, those with lower operating and purchase costs have the potential to deliver a higher ROI, but there are many factors to take into consideration, not only the upfront costs. An ROI analysis

is an important tool for clinics to master before making an expensive long-term capital equipment acquisition.

Reputation and ROI

Practitioners should never rely solely on how much revenue they can generate before adding on a new treatment; they should also consider the clinical benefits of the technology. Of course ROI is an important factor, but it’s not the only factor. For example, if the device is hot right now in the press, but the results are inconsistent or the

technology has a high failure rate, the revenue it may generate in the short term could potentially damage your clinic’s reputation over time. If there is a device that clearly does what nothing else on the market can do, you then have to decide if it is financially viable for your clinic.

In some cases, clinic managers do not look at ROI closely enough. If you are reviewing two or three comparable devices, do a proper financial analysis to determine which one you are more likely to do better with. Take the costs of the system and figure out what you can charge per treatment, factor in any disposable costs, and then calculate how many treatments to break even.

If you choose wisely and market well, you can potentially get your money back in six months. In other cases, it may take one to two years. Also consider where the price of disposables may be in a few years, and how affordable it will be to upgrade the system as new advances are launched in terms of handpieces.

Getting the price right

Setting the right price for a procedure involves competitive analysis. With some devices, there may be a high cost of disposables to do each case, so that will be your starting price. However, your local competition may be driving the price down by discounting a course of treatments or offering specials.

If you are only doing a few treatments per month, you may have priced the procedure too high. Price the procedure where the market will allow you to, and you will end up doing more procedures and using the system more often.

Consider the purchase price of the technology as well as the costs of operating the system, including consumables, how long it will tie up a treatment room, and staff time in terms of set-up and after care.

A more affordable, no-consumables device may provide a more aggressive financial ROI, but only if it meets the needs of your existing patients and/

or enables you to target a new patient population you are not already treating.

Does it enhance the patient experience and add value to your practice?

Key benefits to look for include patient comfort, safety, ease of use, efficacy and the ability to treat most or all skin types. Another important factor is whether only a doctor can operate the system, or whether it can be delegated to nurses or other staff. Treatments that are quick and efficient take less time to perform or to treat large areas, which adds to the versatility of the system.

With some systems, there is more judgment needed in terms of choosing settings and how aggressively to set parameters with each patient, and a physician should make these decisions. With other technologies that are not operator dependent, where there is no technique involved, patients will flock to the cheapest clinic in the market because there is no distinguishing factor. Before buying, ask the rep or distributor to do a demo of the system for your staff, and speak to colleagues who have the system to find out how they like it.

How

to let your (prospective)

patients know

Many clinics over-invest in technology or invest in the wrong capital equipment for their clinics and go into device debt because they have not done their homework before making a purchase.

Even when you have chosen the right device, you need an integrated marketing strategy to be successful. Integrating a new laser into a practice takes careful planning.

Internal marketing is the place to begin to alert your existing patients that you have something new to offer. Many clinics launch new technology with an open house seminar for existing patients and ask them to bring a friend, or send an e-blast to VIP patients to introduce the new treatment.

Any new technology should also be prominently featured on your clinic website, Instagram and Facebook pages, YouTube channel, blog, newsletter and all other important patient touchpoints.

Another commonly used and effective strategy is to send out a local press release announcing that your clinic has the newest laser and tout what it can do.

Does technology attract new patients? The short answer is yes, but you need to market it correctly. If you have the right technology on board, you can encourage patients to become vocal fans and advocates and tell their friends and family about your clinic.

It can be worth paying a premium for the market leader’s brand name system because larger companies offer clinic support, marketing materials, PR to create consumer awareness, and are keen to help you be successful.

Patients will pay for procedures they want, especially if they can get visible results in the shortest amount of time with minimal side effects and recovery period. If the treatment fails to deliver results, or has more downtime than promised, patients have the ability to voice their displeasure in open forums and review sites that negatively impact your clinic ratings.

You may have a clinic filled with state-of-the-art technology, but if your patient demographic is not going to utilise it, it may not be a good investment. Give careful consideration to what your current patients want and need, and if the technology is a good fit for your clinic before making the investment. If you are not sure, ask them before signing on the dotted line. If you make a mistake, the resale value for energybased devices may be a real shock.

THE COSMECEUTICAL ADVANTAGE

FIVE REASONS YOU (AND YOUR PATIENTS) NEED COSMECEUTICALS IN YOUR PRACTICE.

1. IDEAL MARRIAGE OF SKINCARE WITH CLINICAL TREATMENTS

A good skincare regimen incorporating active cosmeceuticals creates the foundation of good skin for your patients. Your laser, IPL, microneedling, injectables, peels and even surgical procedures can all be coupled with cosmeceutical essentials. Clinical and surgical results will be improved and post treatment risks (such as PIH) can be minimised when combined with clinical skincare.

Consider “bundling” cosmeceuticals into the treatment or surgery cost. This

has proven to be highly successful as the patient, after experiencing positive results, will be likely to repurchase individual full-sized products once the kit products are used.

2. GAIN LIFE-LONG PATIENTS

Introducing your patients to an active skincare routine that actually works is one of the simplest ways to gain their trust.

Your primary objective is to gain patients who are happy with their results. An efficacious skincare range can be an economical way to create positive change in the skin. Your procedures can achieve significant clinical results, but efficacious products will help enhance and maintain them. Great results mean happy clients, and happy clients will return.

3. WORD OF MOUTH REFERRAL

Word of mouth is still one of the most powerful tools for attracting new patients. You are more likely to have a word of mouth referral through the results of great skincare than via a surgical or injectable procedure; patients are less likely to be open about having a facelift, but they are far more likely to discuss the great results of a product on their skin tone and wrinkles. A good range leads to new client referrals.

‘YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO HAVE A WORD OF MOUTH REFERRAL THROUGH THE RESULTS OF GREAT SKINCARE THAN VIA A SURGICAL OR INJECTABLE PROCEDURE; PATIENTS ARE LESS LIKELY TO BE OPEN ABOUT HAVING A FACELIFT, BUT THEY ARE FAR MORE LIKELY TO DISCUSS THE GREAT RESULTS OF A SKINCARE PRODUCT.’

4. ADDITIONAL REVENUE STREAM

Creating a passive income stream through selling skincare means that your patients are bringing income into your practice whether you are there or not. Setting up a successful income stream via retailing needs a strategic plan and this is a team effort involving your staff and the skincare supplier. Training is fundamental and you should not consider dispensing products until your staff are thoroughly trained. Remember, you are the experts.

5. “PRESCRIPTION” SKINCARE

Patients are not always aware of their need for proper active skincare. This presents an enormous untapped opportunity for you and your staff to become proactive, sales-savvy educators. Take the time for a formal skin consultation as part of your patient’s treatment plan. Recommend the right product regimen for their specific concern. Educate patients on those ingredients specific to their skin concerns – for example, wrinkle reduction, pigmentation lightening or texture smoothing. Remember, you are not selling; you are helping and educating your patients to achieve the best results for their skin.

IS YOUR CLINIC A VIABLE BUSINESS?

After reading the heading, you will probably say to yourself, of course I have a viable business – I pay taxes and employ staff! Unfortunately, that does not mean you have a viable business. Some of you will find this out when it is time for you to retire and you try to sell your business and are unsuccessful. Every few weeks I have a doctor asking me for help selling his or her business. When I look into it, there is very little to sell. It is important to start off the right way,

which means that you build a business from day one with yourself – your wife or husband should be superfluous to the actual business structure, otherwise your business will not appear viable when you and your spouse leave it. In fact, you should perhaps go even further by setting up your business like a franchise model. The extra benefit is that you may ultimately decide to open other branches or even offer franchise packages one day. You can do this without much extra work as you have

been set up and running that way. An extra benefit is that you are also creating a much more attractive longterm sales package to someone looking to purchase.

If you have the opportunity to purchase rather than rent a premise, do it. Owning the property means you have a much more attractive business to offer on many different levels and over time rents add up to much more than the price of the property.

Make a business plan and continue to update this every year as you continue to grow. You need to modify this plan based on any changes during the year that have reflected on the financials. This should be based on a holistic business, which means a business within a business, based on the concept of aesthetics.

Expand to complementary services

Your business plan should also take into account that if a client comes to your facility for one thing then they may as well come for three or four – and they will, if on offer. There are many likeminded people who you can bring in – naturopaths, nurses, makeup artists, nutritionalists, beauty therapists, etc. The important thing when choosing who to bring on board is that they will provide an extra patient and revenue stream and meet extra needs of the clients. They must not be competitive with any other specialist in the facility otherwise you end up with problems which can destroy the harmony of a business.

Take your time picking these other clinicians because if you choose well, one day they may want to buy the business from you, or even manage it so that you still keep an income stream. Make sure that all other clinicians and axillary employees carry their own

insurance and registrations. You need to keep copies of these at your business. Contracts for all consultants or employees need to be written by a lawyer to ensure that they offer you a high degree of protection.

Streamline protocols and data capture

Make sure you have written protocols for every treatment you offer as well as other relevant business areas such as customer service and problem solving. A protocol for infection control should also be included and updated based on any problems which may occur, for example. When you take on new staff members, having these protocols makes educating them so much easier. These protocols also make your insurer look more favourably on your business. This, of course, also translates to cost savings for you.

Your computer should be set up to keep records of all interactions which occur, such as product sales, treatments undertaken, number of enquiries and the number converted, as well as all relevant client data such as address and how they were acquired (word of mouth, social media, advertising, etc). These statistics should be downloaded weekly.

This research data is vital in allowing you to continue to develop appropriate business as well as marketing plans. These figures will also form part of your package when you go to sell or open other branches or franchises. They should even tell you which days and times were the most productive so that you may then decide to extend your opening hours on those specific days.

Marketing plans matter

When putting together your marketing plan, make sure you include marketing

the consultants and their services as well. The plan needs to be based on the results of your statistics, which allows you to modify your marketing based on what has proven successful rather than hoping activities have worked.

When you buy any new equipment, ensure you have decided on a marketing plan which will deliver the numbers as soon as the equipment is delivered. It is a little too late when the equipment is there and you are scrambling for patients to use it on. If you implement a successful plan, you should be able to pay off that equipment within months.

Staff: the backbone of your business

Building a loyal and professional team of support staff requires a separate plan as they are the backbone of any business. Offering ongoing education, economic incentive packages and recognition activities are just three of the areas which this plan needs to focus on to ensure success. This is so important as it takes a minimum of six months for any new staff member to become an economic asset. Retaining staff also shows a well-run business and gives confidence to any buyer that the business will continue to flourish.

As a business module is not offered in your medical degree, it is not easy to suddenly have to become an expert. With careful planning and the ability to constantly make changes based on knowledge derived from keeping good statistics and continuing to educate yourself business-wise, your business will not only be viable but will flourish and grow and give you great financial security when you finally decide to retire.

WHAT YOU NEED TO CONSIDER IF YOU’RE READY TO SELL YOUR PRACTICE
LEARN WHAT PRIVATE EQUITY FIRMS, PUBLICLY LISTED CORPORATES AND PRIVATE COMPANIES REALLY WANT FROM A NEW ACQUISITION IN THE COSMETIC INDUSTRY. WORDS BY SUZIE HOITINK

Thinking you’d like to sell your business at some stage? If so, who is likely to be your buyer, what are they looking for and what can you do now to set yourself up for a successful sale?

Here’s what you can do to make your practice attractive and what you can expect from the process – from someone who’s been through it.

People often comment that we were lucky to have sold the Clear Complexions Clinics. Luck may have had a tiny part to play, but forethought and planning is how we sold to an ASXlisted company. It was no coincidence; we knew who our likely buyers would be. We had been through two rounds of due diligence with private equity in the years prior to the sale, gaining invaluable experience in what buyers wanted and how to set the business up for a successful sale.

‘We’ is my husband Alex and myself. Team effort all the way. Now as consultants, we help others go down the same path we did, to realise their

dream of financial independence and to know they got their ‘worth’ for all the effort, worry, sacrifice and risk.

Our industry is attracting a lot of interest. Pre-pandemic, there were a few major plays but now there is unprecedented interest in consolidating single practices and small groups. It’s an opportunity if you are ready to take it. As a bespoke, doctor/nurse-led practice, your buyer is unlikely to be from a franchise laser chain model. It’s possible, but unlikely. It may be that your buyer comes from within, a managerial buy-out from a current colleague, but again unlikely. If you are serious about selling, look to where you have an opportunity to get a greater multiple: from the big end of town. This includes private equity firms, publicly listed corporate companies or larger private companies looking to buy up the best and brightest in our industry.

So, what are they looking for and how can you make yourself an attractive acquisition prospect?

‘NOW AS CONSULTANTS, WE HELP OTHERS GO DOWN THE SAME PATH WE DID, TO REALISE THEIR DREAM OF FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE AND TO KNOW THEY GOT THEIR ‘WORTH’ FOR ALL THE EFFORT, WORRY, SACRIFICE AND RISK.’

1.YOUR PEOPLE

You as the principal are the business’s greatest asset and yet its biggest risk in regards to a sale, particularly if you generate the lion’s share of the income. I learned early on to mitigate that risk by developing a performance management program that built a team of high performers around me, equipping them with the clinical and consultative systems to drive up client frequency and spend and deliver consistently excellent clinical outcomes. Those systems limited ‘key person’ risk so that when and if they left the business pre or post sale, the impact was minimal as another clinician could take their position without a drop in productivity.

Buyers look for stability in the team; a consistent team with long tenure plays a crucial role in supporting recurring revenue and is reassuring for any prospective buyer. A high turnover of staff is a red flag. Developing effective retention strategies (and no, that isn’t paying them big incentives) are critical to any practice’s success in the short term and will be what buyers are looking for when performing due diligence on your business.

‘Cultural alignment’ is of paramount importance to buyers for one simple reason: if key team members do not feel

aligned to the new entity’s culture, vision and values, they are unlikely to have the will to endure the change management process. At Clear Complexions, our team was crystal-clear on our vision and values, built on advocacy, empowerment and professionalism. This meant when Vita Group Pty Ltd bought us, the announcement and subsequent change process was met with that same professionalism and positivity. They went on the journey with us.

2. YOUR FINANCIALS

It seems obvious to say, but work with your profitability in mind. Times of growth in any business can strip out profits, so timing is everything. You want to demonstrate consistently attractive – preferably increasing – earnings that benchmark well in the industry, together with a stable cost base, resulting in a significant EBITDA. This is largely what your sale price will be determined on. A healthy EBITDA starts with having sound business intelligence. There are crucial metrics in our industry that when reported and appropriately acted on can turn the dial up exponentially. If you don’t know what metrics drive up productivity and profitability in your practice, then get some help, fast. Have ‘clean financials’, meaning your

financial information is presented with the principal’s salary adjusted to the market and any personal expenses removed.

3. YOUR DATABASE

Large databases are vanity; active databases are sanity! The truth is that even practices that have been around for 10+ years likely have only small active databases. Buyers are looking for sources of recurring revenue where a high proportion is from repeat clients from an established client base. If you want a large active database then be active with them. We develop database strategic plans for our clients’ practices whereby we employ an effective combination of thought leadership communication and multiple marketing techniques. We create a community that clients don’t want to leave.

WHAT WILL A SALE MEAN FOR YOU?

‘Transitional’ is the best word I can use to describe it. It’s a staged process. Yes, initially there is money to be taken off the table, but rarely all of it. Earnouts are necessary to keep you, the key principal, involved and positively engaged. The earn-out period is a

‘PRINCIPALS IN OUR INDUSTRY DON’T JUST SELL WHEN THEY WANT TO RETIRE; THEY LOOK TO SELL WHEN THEY ARE TIRED OF MANAGING THE RISK.’

tumultuous period of change; some positive, some negative, but inevitably marked by an inescapable loss of identity. I coped better than some I know in similar situations, but it wasn’t easy.

You will have a restraint period when you leave post earn-out. ‘Who cares, if you get the cash?’, I hear you say, and rightly so if you intend to retire to your deserted island. However, not being able to do what you know and love for a significant period of time is worth a moment of consideration.

If I sound doomsday, I’m not. We absolutely made the right choice at the right time. It just wasn’t always smooth sailing, but it can be a ‘cake and eat it, too’ situation if you can manage to orchestrate it.

In my experience, principals in our industry don’t just sell when they want to retire; they look to sell when they are tired of managing the risk. Whether you want to sell now or in the future, retire to put your feet in the sand or reinvest and push on with your career without the daily drama, these opportunities are out there if you know how to prepare yourself and how to connect with your prospective buyer. Reach out and we’ll help you find your way.

FUNDAMENTALS OF PULSED LIGHT

TIPS FOR ACHIEVING BETTER OUTCOMES WITH PULSED LIGHT DEVICES. WORDS BY BLAKE WILLIAMS

What are the best parameters to adjust to improve outcomes for patients when using pulsed light? How do we maintain safety, yet ensure we are delivering the most comprehensive treatments?

You may be asking: why don’t my recommended protocols deliver consistently on every patient? Different equipment manufacturers will utilise their own recommended parameter settings for varying indications when it comes to vascular and pigmented. The commonality across all pulsed light devices is physics. What I mean by this is, regardless of the pulsed light modality you are using in your practice, the following advice will be relevant and applicable to help optimise the outcomes you are achieving with your treatments.

I consider the 5 most important factors for enhanced patient outcomes using pulsed light treatments are:

1. SPOT SIZE

What is it?

Spot size determines the treatment area and is where the headpiece’s treatment window makes contact with the skin.

Why is it important?

The contours of the area you are looking to treat should always be considered with the most suitable spot size, to ensure the best contact in the treatment zone. Lack of contact can lead to adverse events, which often can be avoided with appropriate spot sizes.

How can I use this to my advantage?

If treating a forehead, nose or the area around the mouth, it is better to treat with a smaller spot size. For example, if you use a spot of 15mm x 15mm, this will ensure best contact with the contours of the forehead. This is opposed to larger spot sizes, which will give better surface contact on the broader, more fleshy areas. Additionally, some platforms offer smaller treatment areas, between 7-11mm to ensure high energy delivery to spot treat indications, without potentially compromising skin across the whole window.

2. FLUENCE

What Is It?

Fluence is the energy delivered per unit area and is measured in joules per square centimetre. So the power of 1 watt is equivilant to 1 joule per second, though typically pulsed light devices opt for a measure of fluence on the screen.

Why is it important?

Fluence will determine how much output energy is delivered to ensure adequate absorption into the targeted chromophore (along with the correct wavelength and pulse duration). Fluence selection will be subject to Fitzpatrick skin type, with higher fluence on lighter skin and lower fluence on darker skin. Additionally, when treating with pulsed light ‘off face’, you would typically use 1 to 2 joules less than the facial settings, due to increased sun exposure in that area.

How can I use this to my advantage?

Ability to specifically adjust fluence will enhance patient outcomes, so adjustment of this parameter is essential. Typically, increasing fluence by 1 joule is the first step and preferred option when looking to treat pigmentation. Try a test patch with your recommended settings, then try +1 joule for a comparison on skin reaction. Keep in mind that 1 joule of fluence is a big increment with pulsed light, so be careful.

3. WAVELENGTH

What is it?

Wavelength (measured in nanometers) will determine the depth of penetration of the pulsed light. Think of it like a tinted window; the darker the tint, the less the light will pass through. The lighter the tint, the further it will penetrate. Pulsed light wavelength cut-off filters typically range from 420nm through to 800nm. Remember, the lower the nm rating, the more aggressive; so always consider your energy settings and target.

Why is it important?

Wavelength cut-off filters allow more specific absorption in the preferred chromophore. Determining the correct filter should always be considered when deciding what chromophore you intend to treat for the best efficacy.

For example, a 515nm wavelength is optimal to treat pigmentation, as this is more superficial than vascular (560nm) or hair (590-695nm). This is directly in line with the laser absorption scale. At the wavelength of 515nm, you will see the best isolation for the melanin chromophore with the least conflict from the vascular targets. The same can be said for the 560nm for vascular; there is less conflict with pigment at this wavelength. (Note: we would use longer wavelength when treating darker Fitzpatrick skin types.)

How can I use this to my advantage?

Assuming that using a 590nmm wavelength should have some efficacy on both pigment and vascular targets is correct. After all, the light will be absorbed in both. One of the most common treatments performed in light-based clinics is a ‘one pass treatment’ for photorejuvenation.

Physics tells us this is in fact a sub-optimal approach to treatment for patients. A more clinically efficient approach would be to treat (on separate occasions, four weeks apart) pigment and vascular independently – starting with the dominant chromophore first. This ensures the highest level of concentrated energy is delivered selectively into specific targets.

4. PULSE DURATION

What is it?

Pulse duration (measured in milliseconds or ms) is the amount of time the light is on for the pulse.

Why is it important?

This is another critical parameter that should be fully adjustable on a pulsed light system for best practice. Lets say we have two options to treat a vascular patient. If we have a treatment setting at 15j/cm2, with a 20ms pulse duration and another treatment setting at 15j/cm2 with a 10ms pulse, which one is going to allow the highest level of energy into to the target, and why? Both are the same fluence. The 20ms option, will deliver 15 joules to the target in 20ms. If we deliver the same amount of energy, in a shorter timeframe (10ms) this will have a faster temperature rise, as it allows the target less time to cool, providing a more efficient energy absorption.

How can I use this to my advantage?

Try shortening the pulse duration (instead of increasing fluence) when treating vascular indications. Shortening the pulse duration by 5ms from your recommended protocols can have a more prominent impact than increasing joules. If the skin is still responding safely but you’re not achieving the desired result, consider adding another j/cm2 for that ‘wow’ result.

5. COOLING

What is it?

There are many methods of cooling with light-based devices. The most common with pulsed light devices is direct contact cooling. This means the immediate treatment area will be cooled, to protect the epidermis when the light is delivered to the skin. In my opinion, sapphire tips are the preferred option in pulsed light systems as sapphire is more conductive and doesn’t pit.

Why

is it important?

Safety and comfort! If we don’t cool the epidermis, we are not able to deliver high energy levels safely to the target chromophores without risk of burns. However, having the temperature too cold can also obstruct efficient temperature rise of the target chromophore. Let’s consider treating a patient for pigment. If you use cooling at 3 degrees Celsius (on a Fitzpatrick skin type 2) with 12 joules and a 10ms pulse, you can be confident this is highly efficient to manage patient safety. Unfortunately, this means the temperature of the target chromophore will also be much lower. Therefore, heat to the target from energy output is compromised by over cooling, and this jeopardises results. Remember, the body’s average temperature should be around 37 degrees Celsius. To ensure safe cooling for the skin, while balancing effective temperature rise in our target, an optimal temperature for contact cooling should be 15-25 degrees.

How can I use this to my advantage?

Sometimes it can be difficult to achieve the desired response when adjusting fluence or pulse duration alone. I recommend trying to increase the temperature; usually +4 to 5 degrees to ensure a better absorption to the target chromophore, with less cooling conflict for lighter skin types. For darker skin types, try reducing the cooling, and increasing pulse duration (and energy if needed). This allows delivery of more energy, more safely to darker skin types.

With an understanding of these 5 key factors of pulsed light, we can refine our approach to treating patients and, in time, use all of these factors together to create highly bespoke treatment plans for every patient and deliver the best outcomes, more safely and effectively every time.

LASERS IN AESTHETIC MEDICINE

A BRIEF REVIEW OF THE PRINCIPLES OF PHOTOTHERMOLYSIS –FROM EINSTEIN’S THEORY OF STIMULATED EMISSION TO MODERN LASER THERAPY.

While Albert Einstein didn’t invent the laser per se, he certainly paved its way into modern society and medicine. Expanding on physicist Max Planck’s quantum hypothesis, in 1905, Einstein proposed how light delivers its energy in chunks, which are represented by photons-discrete quantum particles.1 Later, in 1916, he introduced the concept of stimulated emission: photons, by interacting with excited atoms or molecules, could stimulate the emission of new photons having the same frequency, phase, polarisation and direction of the first one.2

This process, which thus behaves like an amplification process, was termed ‘light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation’ or, for short, ‘LASER’.

In 1954, the first stimulated emissions of radiation were demonstrated for microwave radiation (MASER) by J P Gordon and C H Townes. The possibility to extend the principle into the infrared and optical regions was proposed by Schawlow and Townes in 1958 and the first laser was constructed by Theodore Maiman in 19603, who used a ruby crystal stimulated by high intensity flashtubes to emit millisecond pulses

of coherent 694nm (near-infrared) ruby laser (red) light. The neodymium doped yttrium-aluminium–ga-net laser (Nd: YAG) was constructed by Johnson in 1961, the argon ion laser (Ar+) was invented by Bennett et al in 1962 and the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser was created by Patel in 1964.

Different types of gas lasers, solidstate lasers and metal vapour lasers were invented later. The wavelength domain was gradually developed into the ultraviolet range, which made ionisation and bond-rupturing of target molecules possible.3

In 1962, the American dermatologist Leon Goldman, a pioneer in applying lasers to dermatologic conditions, was the first physician to test the ruby laser on human skin; in 1963, he reported on the effects of Maiman’s ruby laser in the selective photodestruction of pigmented skin elements such as black hair.4 He also described the potential use of ruby laser and the more innovative Q-switched device in tattoo removal and the possible treatment of other pigmented lesions, such as nevi and melanomas. Moreover, Goldman investigated the use of Argon laser in the treatment of vascular malformations,

‘IN

1962, THE AMERICAN DERMATOLOGIST LEON GOLDMAN, A PIONEER IN APPLYING LASERS TO DERMATOLOGIC CONDITIONS, WAS THE FIRST PHYSICIAN TO TEST

THE RUBY LASER ON HUMAN SKIN.’

and the use of carbon dioxide laser for the photo-excision of skin lesions. In 1973, he also introduced the neo dymium: yttrium- aluminium garnet (Nd: YAG) laser in the treatment of vascular lesions.1

‘TODAY, LASERS HAVE BECOME A FUNDAMENTAL, IRREPLACEABLE AND OMNIPRESENT DEVICE OF MODERN SCIENCE. THE MEDICAL POTENTIAL OF LASERS IS CONTINUING TO BE EXPLORED.’

The next major leap in the field of cutaneous lasers was the concept of “pulsing” the laser beam, which allowed selective destruction of abnormal or undesired tissue, while leaving surrounding normal tissue undisturbed.

This “selective photothermolysis” theory was developed by dermatologists Rox Anderson and John Parrish5 Their 1983 article elucidated the tissue-laser interaction leading to selective destruction of an intended target structure, termed a chromophore. Laser energy of a predetermined wavelength was preferentially absorbed by a chromophore, creating thermal absorption by the target more so than surrounding structures, leading to selective tissue heating and destruction.

An exciting more recent development was the introduction of fractionated thermolysis in the early 2000s. The advent of fractional lasers, which use narrow, microscopic columns of light to treat a specific portion of the skin and leave surrounding tissue intact, has transformed the way in which skin resurfacing is performed, offering more accessible and safe treatments with low downtime and

comparable results to traditional resurfacing lasers.

Today, lasers are widely used in almost all fields in medicine, with a broad range of wavelengths, fluence rates and pulse length and frequency. It has become a fundamental, irreplaceable and omnipresent device of modern science. Of course, the medical potential of lasers is continuing to be explored.

BASIC PARAMETERS OF A LASER Wavelength

A laser’s wavelength is the distance between two peaks measures in nanometres. Wavelengths must be consistent with the target tissue/colour (heomoglobin, melanin, water, etc).

The shorter the wavelength, the more superficial the penetration and the higher the energy; the longer the wavelength, the deeper penetration and the lower the energy.

The lasing medium or energy source – eg, gas (CO2), solid (Ruby, Alexandrite, Nd:Yag) or liquid (dye) – determines the wavelength of the laser.

Fluence

Fluence is the energy per area measured in Joules, typically ranging from 3-150J/ cm2. As fluence increases, so too does the destructive force of the energy.

Spot size

Typically, a large spot size equates to a deeper penetration and decreased scatter. Conversely, a small spot size means more energy is absorbed in superficial structures and there is increased scatter.

Pulse duration

This refers to how quickly the energy is delivered to the tissues and is measured in milliseconds. Generally, the longer the

pulse, the more gentle the heating of the target.

Quality switched (Q-switched) lasers allow for the generation of nanosecondrange laser pulses. The pulses result in rapid thermal expansion and fragmentation of the target.

Newer picosecond technology delivers an ultra-short pulse width in picoseconds. It generates higher mechanical stress in the target without increased heating.

The wavelength peaks of the laser light, pulse durations and how the target skin tissue absorbs this, determine the clinical applications of the laser types.

‘JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN ORIENTATED ON THE USE OF THE MACHINE AND ITS ACCESSORIES DOESN’T MEAN YOU HAVE COMPLETED A LASER SAFETY OFFICER COURSE.’

TOP 10 TIPS FOR CHOOSING LASER AND INTENSE PULSED LIGHT EQUIPMENT

1. Get educated on the theory of lasers, IPL, safety and clinical presentations. If you understand wavelengths, principles of photothermolysis, pulse width, fluence, spot size, clinical end points, Fitzpatrick Skin Types, expected side effects and possible adverse outcomes then you will be able to be discerning and make a well-educated decision. Choose theory courses that are accredited, endorsed or recognised by radiation health departments or health professional bodies to ensure they are quality and evidence based.

2. Check out your state/territory regulations. Are you able to operate a Class 4 laser in your state? Are there licensing requirements? Did you know that IPL devices are only regulated in Tasmania?

3. Be a critical reader. Examine the claims and the clinical papers that are associated with them. Don’t take anything for face value and get independent information, too.

4. Decide what services you’d like to deliver. Will it be hair removal, skin rejuvenation, skin resurfacing, tattoo removal or all of these? There is no one machine (yet) that does it all. How much can your population afford to pay? Where will you find your customers?

5. Machine settings should be customisable. You want the machine with parameters that are able to be adjusted to suit the different targets and skin types to get the results you really want.

6. Ongoing education and support from the manufacturer is essential. After they show you the basics of how to use the machine, will they return to show you advanced applications? Do they have marketing in place that supports your practice? They should provide signage for the door for controlled access and laser safety

eye wear as standard. Just because you have been orientated on the use of the machine and its accessories, doesn’t mean you have completed a Laser Safety Officer course. If you don’t have one, get one (see number 1).

7. Consider the costs – both initial outlay and ongoing. The initial cost of your equipment isn’t the end of the story. Consider the costs of disposable heads, handpieces that need refurbishment or repair and other disposables such as gel, spatulas and linen. Ask for information on the numbers of treatments needed to start to get a return on your investment.

8. Practice. Provided consent is obtained, work within your scope of practice/skill set under supervision and wnsure safety protocols are adhered to. Colleagues, friends, family, volunteers, paid models or paying clients can all help you hone your skills. Some of the RTOs have short practical workshops that you can do as stand-alone modules. Choose practical workshops that are accredited, endorsed or recognised by radiation health departments or health professional bodies to ensure they are quality and evidence based.

9. Determine your budget. Shop around; there are hundreds of choices on offer. Some are TGA approved, some are not. Some are in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and some are not. Consider if you will buy outright, rent to buy, seek finance or how you will pay your machine off.

10.Cover your legal bases. Have adequate professional liabilities insurance. Work within your legal scope. Develop your practice based on exceptional education, evidencebased practice and the discerning choice of equipment.

SELLING SKINCARE: IMPROVE PATIENT OUTCOMES AND BOOST PROFITS

THE BENEFITS, HOW-TOS (AND MISSED OPPORTUNITIES) OF SELLING SKINCARE IN YOUR PRACTICE. WORDS BY RICKY ALLEN

In this time of uncertainty, we’re all looking for ways to sustain and grow our businesses. Right under your nose is an area of your business which has huge growth potential: selling skincare.

If you asked your client to bring in the skincare products they are using now, they would almost need a suitcase to carry them in. But did you know that most of your clients invest only about 10% of their total skincare investment with your clinic or medispa? The rest of the money goes to online stores, chemists and departments stores. Why is it that in the United States many clinics and medispas declare their biggest ROI to be skincare?

There are many reasons, and we need to examine these and adapt accordingly. Firstly, choose your skincare brands wisely. Look at the science behind them as well as their actual level of activity. You only want to stock products that really work. You also need products in the range that can treat a variety of skin conditions and concerns such as acne, hyperpigmentation, rosacea and menopausal skin.

Next, you should look at whether these products are available online and in physical stores. If they are, they are not the best choice – it’s most likely your clients will purchase from these distribution outlets than from your clinic. (Do not fall for the out of date idea of making your own skincare. This is

hugely expensive, time consuming and definitely not the best use of your money or time.) You also want the skincare brand to support you through advertising and marketing; selecting a skincare range that has brand recognition is always an easier sell.

Empower your staff

Once you’ve made your decision about which skincare range you are going to stock, it’s your responsibility to become an expert in the products to truly champion their benefits. All staff, including doctors, nurses, aestheticians and receptionists, should be trained in the skincare and its key values and benefits, ingredients and formulations.

Each staff member should be given the product to use themselves. How much easier is it to sell something you use and like as opposed to something you just hold in your hand?

Next, look at all the treatments you offer in your clinic or medispa and pair them with the appropriate skincare so they can be sold as a package.

Maximise aesthetic outcomes

We all know that the quality of a patient’s results depends in part on the quality of their skin. Despite an aesthetic practitioner’s best efforts, poor dermal tone and texture can impede healing, whereas skin that is supple and pliable will respond well and lead to better results. Educate your patients on the benefits of quality skincare and prescribe a personalised skincare regimen before and after treatment to facilitate recovery and enhance results.

Make sure all clients have their skin analysed every six months so that they can be prescribed the appropriate products and treatments. There are so many of your clients who come in for

a treatment and then leave without a single product in their hand.

Prescribe, don’t sell

Have your products on display in the waiting area so that clients can see what is available in your facility. Get them curious and interested from the start of their visit.

Don’t be tricked into writing down a list of what they need so they can take it home and shop for the recommended products online. Make sure that you explain that when they purchase the products, you will also show them how much to use, how and when to apply, and how to store the product. This is a benefit they will not receive when buying skincare online. In addition, when paying their account, give your client a product brochure to further espouse the benefits.

Prescribe, don’t sell; a ‘try and see if you like it’ approach lacks any real buying motivation or scientific incentive.

The most essential element of your client’s skincare prescription is sunscreen. Sun care is often applied wrongly and therefore not delivering adequate skin protection. Educate your clients on the importance of wearing sunscreen every day and how to properly apply it. Consider running a sun care promotion at various times of the year, tied in with skincare sales.

Last but not least, make sure that staff are set up with a bonus schedule. You’ll be amazed at how well this works.

Hopefully you can start to see the huge economic potential of stocking and selling the appropriate skincare and just how easy it can be.

BIOMIMETIC GROWTH FACTORS • HAIR & SCALP REVITALISATION

Six years in the making, the groundbreaking KeraFactor® Peptide Complex represents a new category of advanced skincare for hair. The patented KeraFactor® formula combines a proprietary set of 7 biomimetic polypeptides that includes specifically selected growth factors and proteins to achieve visible scalp and hair revitalisation. Proprietary and patented technology allows the KeraFactor® formula to contain significantly higher concentrations of each growth factor, wrapped in its own nano-liposome for optimal delivery.

The customised KeraFactor® formula provides growth factors typically deficient in the skin during hair loss or poor hair health. It helps to improve the appearance of hair and visibly improves scalp skin by providing the necessary nutrients to promote thicker, fuller, healthy-looking hair.

Most of the growth factors included in the KeraFactor® Serum have been very difficult to synthesise in the past. As a result, available topical formulations do not have these growth factors or have low concentrations of some of them. All of KeraFactor®’s growth factors have been synthesised in high concentrations and wrapped in nano-liposomes separately through proprietary and patented manufacturing processes. They are then combined, resulting in the finished and patented KeraFactor® formula. Currently, KeraFactor® is the only range of products that includes all of these growth factors, in high concentrations.

The KeraFactor® formula is created into a unique line of products: KeraFactor® Serum (in-clinic treatment) and the KeraFactor® Scalp Stimulating Solution and Scalp Stimulating

Shampoo + Conditioner (home-care range).

KeraFactor® works in conjunction with various treatment methods, including microneedling, PRP and mesotherapy, as well as the KeraLase® treatment, to achieve maximum product absorption and optimum results.

KeraLase® is a novel, injection-free approach to hair and scalp revitalisation using the KeraFactor® Serum with Lutronic’s state-of-the-art LaseMD Ultra gentle, non-ablative laser. The KeraLase® treatment is fast (approx 10 minutes), virtually painless, and has no downtime, offering a one-of-a-kind approach to hair and scalp health that is both cost-effective and efficacious.

LaseMD Ultra® is a key component of the new KeraLase® treatment. The. laser creates tiny “microchannels” in the scalp, which increases the absorption of KeraFactor®’s biomimetic growth factors and proteins and helps enhance scalp microvasculature for improving the appearance of hair and scalp skin.

Clinical studies have shown that enhanced absorption of nano-liposomes can be over five times due to the sponge-like microcolumns created by the 1927nm wavelength. Absorption of the KeraFactor® Serum helps to promote denser, thicker and fullerlooking hair and conditions skin for a healthy-looking scalp.

Unlike PRP, there is no need to have blood drawn or perform any injections into the treatment area. This allows KeraLase® treatments to be virtually painless with no downtime and low operating costs. Results with KeraLase® may also be more predictable. While autologous treatment with injected PRP can yield improvement, a percentage of

BIOMIMETIC GROWTH FACTORS • HAIR & SCALP REVITALISATION

patients are considered non-responders or have limited or inconsistent results due to the variability of an autologous preparation. There is also a subset of patients who have difficulty tolerating the discomfort of injections.

With compelling results, fast treatments and little to no discomfort, KeraLase® is proving to be the breakthrough treatment for promoting fuller, healthy-looking hair.

KEY ADVANTAGES

• Contains high concentration of specific hair growth factors and stimulators

• Comfortable (no injections/needles)

• Fast (treatment time approx 10 minutes)

• No downtime

• 3-month treatment protocol (6 treatments)

• Visible improvement continues 12-18 months post treatment

‘THE BIGGEST ADVANTAGE OF KERAFACTOR® IS THE CONCENTRATION OF HIGH GROWTH FACTORS IN THE SERUM. IT IS REMARKABLE THAT THE KERAFACTOR® SERUM HAS AN UNMATCHED CONCENTRATION LEVEL IN A PRE-PACKAGED SOLUTION.

‘WE OFFER KERALASE® BECAUSE IT IS FAST, EASY TO PERFORM, AND THE PERFECT ADDITION TO ANY AESTHETIC TREATMENT... THE OPERATING COST TO ME IS EXTREMELY LOW. KERALASE® HAS ALREADY PROVEN TO BE AN EXCELLENT REVENUE DRIVER.

‘THE LACK OF PAIN AND NO DOWNTIME ARE PARTICULARLY INTRIGUING TO MOST PEOPLE AND MAKES IT AN EASY STEP FOR THEM. THIS TREATMENT IS IDEAL FOR PATIENTS LOOKING FOR QUICK, COMFORTABLE TREATMENTS WITHOUT ANY SOCIAL DOWNTIME. THE TRUTH IS, MEN AND WOMEN OF ALL AGES LOVE KERALASE®.’

WiQo takes a multi-layer approach to skin treatments. It combines an exclusive, patent-pending formulation applied in-clinic with a complementary home care protocol to deliver immediate and progressive results with minimal downtime.

WiQo ONE helps stimulate the skin’s natural revitalisation processes with a proprietary interaction between homocysteic acid and ammonium trichloroacetate in the presence of low concentration hydrogen peroxide. This unique WiQo ONE formula promotes firmer, brighter and smoother skin while ensuring zero damage to the epidermal layers (and hence no frosting). It helps improve the skin’s texture and tone, providing an immediate lifting effect and prolonged results after 5 sessions. The specific yet simple percutaneous absorption technique used to apply WiQo ONE provides visible results immediately and is particularly suitable for patients who have an aversion to needles.

WiQo ONE can be used on all skin types, all ages and at all times of the year on both face and body with minimal discomfort and downtime.

WiQO ONE 3-STEP PROGRAMME

One – Activate Stimulation

In-clinic treatment that helps boost the skin’s natural deep revitalisation process. This exclusive and innovative product is applied topically with a specific massage technique, providing an immediate lifting and brightening action on the skin. The weekly treatment, applied with a specific application technique to optimise percutaneous absorption, provides prolonged results after a full course of 5 sessions.

Two – Nourish & Protect

The WiQo Nourishing and Moisturising Face Cream for Dry Skin is applied liberally to the treated area to prevent dryness and help soothe the appearance of temporary redness.

Three – Continue Stimulation

The home treatment protocol combines WiQo Nourishing and Moisturising Face Cream with WiQo Smoothing Face Fluid, which contains low pH glycolic acid in a formula that is well tolerated by the skin. It works by lowering the pH of the skin, causing it to perform a “natural exercise” to bring it back to its natural physiological state. By stimulating the skin on a daily basis, the restorative process that began in clinic is continued, optimising results.

SKINCARE • ANTI-AGEING • REGENERATIVE REPAIR • STEM CELL FACTORS • HAIR REVITALISATION

A first in anti-ageing skincare, CALECIM® Professional is the world’s only skincare range that goes beyond plant stem cells to harness cord lining stem cell technology, offering outstanding visible skin rejuvenation results. It has changed the game for anti-ageing skincare and enhanced post-procedure care with its patented complex of cord lining stem cells.

The key technology harnessed by CALECIM® Professional is ethically derived from Red Deer Umbilical Cord Lining, a patented source of mesenchymal and epithelial stem cells, from which powerful rejuvenating proteins are cultured.

The protein mix in culture media is called Rejuvenating Conditioned Media and helps stimulate the skin’s self-healing properties to expedite wound healing and helps reduce the appearance of redness, swelling and discomfort post-procedure while helping skin look and feel younger. All products in the CALECIM® Professional range contain this patented protein mix.

The growth factors found in CALECIM® Professional are derived from neonatal mammalian stem cells, which

signal skin restoration in a way human skin cells can understand, and in a way plant-derived ingredients cannot – this is the first time that umbilical cord lining stem cells are being truly utilised in a topical skincare to promote optimum visible skin condition. This discovery is patent protected in 42 territories worldwide.

The proteins from the umbilical stem cells don’t just affect the epidermis but also the dermis, giving the fibroblasts nutrients to help make more elastin and hyaluronic acid, as well as offering anti-inflammatory proteins. This is what gives a visible lifting and plumping effect of the skin and helps encourage skin mobility and efficient epithelisation, particularly after the skin has been compromised such as after laser or microneedling treatment.

The comprehensive skincare range has five high-performance products and, in addition to post-procedure recovery, is designed to be used as an everyday skincare system to promote optimum epidermal cell turnover and enhance skin restoration from visible environmental damage and the natural ageing process.

‘THE KEY TECHNOLOGY BEHIND CALECIM ® PROFESSIONAL IS THE GROWTH FACTORS THAT COME FROM THE CELLS HARVESTED FROM THE UMBILICAL CORD LINING. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT UMBILICAL CORD LINING STEM CELLS – OR STEM CELLS IN GENERAL – ARE BEING TRULY UTILISEDIN A TOPICAL SKINCARE TO PROMOTE SKIN HEALTH.’

CALECIM® Professional Advanced Hair System

It is estimated that 40% of women and 85% of men suffer from hair loss or thinning before the age of 50. CALECIM® Professional offers a new nonsurgical solution, based on the same proprietary technology derived from mesenchymal stem cells that is found in its revolutionary post-procedure products and anti-ageing skincare range.

CALECIM® Professional Advanced Hair System contains a high

concentration of Rejuvenating Conditioned Media, which contains powerful stem cell derived growth factors, to help promote fuller looking hair. This active ingredient works with in-clinic hair regrowth treatments and hair transplant procedures by providing a nutrient-rich micro environment to help boost a regenerative response. It conditions skin for a healthy-looking scalp, helping support normal hair follicle cycle for denser, thicker and fuller looking hair.

‘WE HAVE OBSERVED VISIBLE REGROWTH IN THE AREA THAT HAS BEEN TREATED AND AN INCREASE IN THE APPEARANCE OF VOLUME AND THICKNESS AT APPROXIMATELY 4 WEEKS POST INITIAL TREATMENT. THE EASY APPLICATION LEAVES NO IRRITATION OR SENSITIVITY, AS MOST OTHER DRUGS OR TREATMENT AVAILABLE ON THE CURRENT MARKET DO, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY WE HAVE SEEN NO SIDE EFFECTS. IT IS DRUG FREE, CHEMICAL FREE AND DERIVED FROM THE SECRETION OF STEM CELLS BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE PROTEIN MEDIA, WHICH IS THE LATEST PIONEER METHOD FOR CELL REGENERATION.’

NEOGEN EVO NITROGEN PLASMA SYSTEM

Exclusive to Costec, NEOGEN EVO is the next generation of patented plasma technology, converting nitrogen gas into plasma energy for unique thermal heating of tissue and an all-encompassing photorejuvenation effect. Made in the UK, and CE Medical, FDA cleared and TGA listed, it is purposely designed for dermatologists and aesthetic doctors who want to stand out from their peers.

NEOGEN EVO delivers controlled heating to the skin architecture, stimulating a significant physiological response, without creating an open wound. Unlike ablative technologies, there is no epidermal vaporisation or charring caused at the time of treatment and no demarcation lines.

The unique energy delivered by NEOGEN is non-fractionated and not dependent on a chromophore for its

uptake. This provides uniform energy absorption, ensuring consistent treatment of the skin. At high energies it also supports significant tightening.

Treating the entire skin structure ensures optimal results as the entire surface is regenerated with associated neocollagenesis and neoelastogenesis. Clinical studies show neocollagenesis and reduction in elastosis continue for more than one year post treatment.

Secondary effects of improved skin quality – texture, colour, tone and tightening – provide increased outcomes and patient satisfaction. Also, there are fewer complications and risks compared with lasers, and treatments create a healthy, natural, lustrous appearance. Also available in the NEOGEN SPA version for beauty therapists and medispas.

It speeds up the “natural regeneration” of biological tissues and, because it is low intensity, the treatment is 100% natural for the human body and completely non-invasive.

TECAR is a form of electromedical therapy that uses diathermy (heat) to boost natural rejuvenation processes by increasing metabolic function through improved circulation, increased permeability of cells and higher oxygen levels. Increased metabolic function enhances the stimulation of collagen and elastin reducing ageing of the skin and accelerating healing.

Frequencies applied are within the Radio Frequency spectrum (RF), which produces high-frequency acoustic vibrations ranging from medium frequencies of 300KHz, 500KHz to high frequency RF 1 MHz. Treatments vary, depending on the accessory used.

ULTRAFORMER III

Widely used with millions of treatments performed worldwide, Ultraformer III is the leading system for ultrasound lifting, tightening and contouring. Ultraformer III’s seven interchangeable cartridges project uniform ultrasound beams directly to multiple layers underneath the skin to promote tighter collagen formation, tissue contraction and reduction in the volume of adipocytes. MMFU-powered cartridges are designed to transfer both concentrated and stable ultrasound energy into

the focal region. Built to emit an equal distribution of heat, the Ultraformer III accurately targets broad or narrow areas of concern without damaging surrounding tissue during customised procedures.

Ultraformer III’s high peak power and multi-layer treatment mean that patients feel an immediate benefit, then experience ongoing improvement over the following 3 to 6 months.

SKIN TIGHTENING • WRINKLES • SKIN TEXTURE • PIGMENTATION • SKIN REJUVENATION

SECRET RF

Demand for non-surgical aesthetic procedures with little to no downtime is on the rise. More than 70 percent of patients are bothered by signs of ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles, poor skin texture and pigmentation.

Secret RF is a novel fractional radiofrequency (RF) microneedling system for tissue coagulation and hemostasis designed to stimulate and remodel collagen. By adjusting the microneedles, Secret RF can deliver energy at various depths, so treatments can be tailored to address each patient’s individual concerns.

Secret’s bipolar RF delivers precisely controlled RF energy to selectively adjusted depths (0.5mm to 3.5mm) via the patented gold-plated treatment head. This highly controlled distribution of energy helps to minimise discomfort, maximise dermal coagulation and optimise recovery times.

Combine Secret RF with 1540nm Erbium Glass laser with Secret DUO, or CO2 Laser with Fraxis DUO for optimal photoageing results.

TESLACHAIR

The TESLAChair™ uses advanced Functional Magnetic Stimulation (FMS) technology to treat weakened pelvic floor muscles and all types of incontinence. FMS technology can also benefit patients with sexual dysfunction and chronic pain in the pelvic region and lumbar spine.

TESLAChair offers a revolutionary new treatment for incontinence, stimulating deep muscle tissue without coming in direct contact with the skin. Backed by clinical trials, the TESLAChair is redefining the intimate health and wellness space, with

studies showing that up to 90 percent of women suffering from postnatal urinary incontinence were relieved of their symptoms after the TESLAChair treatment. The remaining 10 percent saw a significant improvement.

During electromagnetic induction, rapid changes of magnetic field intensity induce an electrical current in the neuron. Once the current reaches a certain value, a so-called neuron action potential is achieved. This neuron action potential causes the neuron cell to depolarise, which eventually leads to a supramaximal muscle contraction.

MUSCLE STRENGTHENING & TONING • FAT REDUCTION • BODY CONTOURING

TESLAFORMER

TESLAFormer™ provides patients with a more concentrated, targeted and unique treatment for body contouring using Functional Magnetic Stimulation (FMS) to stimulate the muscles, inducing supramaximal contractions that build muscle cells quicker than voluntary muscle contractions experienced during traditional strength training.

Supramaximal type contraction experienced during TESLAFormer treatments are accompanied by a rapid metabolic reaction in the fat cells which works to strengthen and rebuild the muscle while also reducing fat.

The supramaximal contractions trigger the release of free fatty acids to break down localised fat deposits while also improving muscular tone and strength.

TESLAFormer treatments are a great option for patients who want to look fit and healthy, not just reduce excess fat.

No preparation is required before a TESLAFormer treatment and a typical treatment lasts 30 minutes. A total of 6 to 12 sessions carried out every other day is recommended for optimal results.

CLATUU ALPHA

Clatuu Alpha delivers a new approach in fat-freezing technology. The dual-sculpting cryolipolysis device houses the world’s first and only 3D 360° surround cooling panel for delivery of more effective cooling energy than conventional two-sided cooling methods.

Clinical studies have shown CLATUU Alpha’s 360° cooling technology increases efficiency by 18.1%, while the ergonomic applicators offer 20% stronger suction to improve efficacy.

The smart device is also equipped with an expandable range of seven

applicators that can automatically recommend parameters for each treatment. In addition, the upgraded system allows users to adjust cooling and suction levels to provide treatments customised to the needs of each patient.

The CLATUU system maintains a constant target temperature and has a proven track record of dependability and clinical efficacy. It is engineered to reach its target temperature faster than previous models, reducing the inconveniences of waiting and maximising time efficiency for both patients and practitioners.

ONDA COOLWAVES BY DEKA

ONDA by DEKA simultaneously delivers enhanced fat reduction, cellulite reduction and longer term collagen stimulation using the revolutionary new Coolwaves energy. Coolwaves bypass the surface layers of skin tissue, helping deliver more heat directly to where it is needed: the subcutaneous fat cells and connective tissue, without causing pain and discomfort.

ONDA Coolwaves dramatically reduces the heating of the surface tissue to allow the skin to stay cooler and more comfortable while delivering significantly more heating of the fat than laser and RF fat reduction technologies. It can heat the subcutaneous fat and connective tissue to around 8-10 degrees hotter than typical RF devices, while maintaining the same or lower skin temperature. Research suggests this can produce a greater reduction in adipose cell viability in less treatment time. It also allows Onda to reach key temperature thresholds for effective cellulite reduction and tighten skin in addition to fat loss.

Onda’s Coolwaves technology is able to target the skin’s connective tissue to reduce stubborn cellulite and tighten skin by generating temperatures exceeding 50-55°C.

Additionally, ONDA Coolwaves has no consumables, no downtime, and offers fast treatment in fewer sessions.

Indications

Onda has three primary indications: localised fat deposits, cellulite and skin tightening.

• Localised fat deposits: Onda’s deep handpiece enables Coolwaves to penetrate deeply, disrupting the membranes of subcutaneous fat cells. The lysate is subsequently drained off by stimulation of physiological metabolic processes (macrophage lipolysis). The cooling system integrated into the handpieces ensures that the skin remains cool for maximum patient comfort.

• Cellulite: Histology shows that Onda can effectively target the connective septa between the adipose lobules in the more advanced stages of cellulite.

• Skin tightening: The microwaves induce immediate shrinkage of the collagen fibres in the dermis and stimulate the production of new collagen, resulting in firmer and more toned tissues. It takes about three treatments for lasting results and is favoured by patients for price point, comfort and visible improvement.

‘ONDA OFFERS THE UNIQUE BENEFIT OF ONE TREATMENT FOR FAT REDUCTION, SKIN TIGHTENING AND CELLULITE REDUCTION, WITHOUT ANY CONSUMABLES... IT HAS BEEN ABLE TO DELIVER RESULTS IN HALF THE NUMBER OF TREATMENTS THAN THE MACHINES WE’VE PREVIOUSLY USED.’

SOFWAVE

Sofwave is the new solution for noninvasive skin tightening with proven efficacy, minimal discomfort, minimal downtime, minimal risk of side effects and clear improvements in as little as one single treatment.

Using proprietary Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam Technology SUPERB™, energy precisely passes through the epidermis, heating the mid-dermal tissue at the precise depth and temperature to induce collagen production and remodelling. Sofwave improves the overall appearance of ageing skin while ensuring no damage to the epidermis or to the underlying structures beneath the dermis. It is suitable for all skin types.

Sofwave’s high frequency ultrasound beams propagate through the tissue and create an array of 7 unique geometric 3D cylindrical-shaped thermal zones in the dermis separated by regions of undamaged tissue, thereby creating a fractional effect in the mid-dermis. Each pulse delivers high intensity energy from all 7 parallel beam transducers. It provides greater than 25% coverage in one two-pass procedure.

Sofcool™, the proprietary feedbackcontrolled skin cooling utilises unique thermo-cooled direct contact transducers while confining the

thermal zones to the targeted areas and providing full protection of the epidermal layer.

Sofwave meets an unmet need among patients looking for a nodowntime, comfortable procedure in one or two sessions that addresses skin ageing independent of skin colour or type. It is a new technology poised to become a true game changer in noninvasive skin tightening and rejuvenation.

MEDICAL-GRADE SKINCARE • ANTI-AGEING

i S CLINICAL SKINCARE

iS Clinical delivers highly effective, clinically validated skincare products that offer dramatic visible improvements to the skin. It is an advanced pharmaceutical-grade cosmeceutical range using 95-98% botanically derived ingredients in their most purest and potent form.

The comprehensive product line is the culmination of precise chemical formulations based on extensive knowledge of dermatological biochemistry and the highest-grade ingredients available. The products within the range are multitasking, suitable for all skin types and ages, and designed to improve overall skin health.

Clinically validated by numerous independent third-party studies, this powerful transformative cosmeceutical range is designed to achieve dramatic and visible improvements to the skin. Due to its high concentration of botanically derived ingredients, iS Clinical is not systemically absorbed and can be used in pregnancy and by oncology patients.

Clinical validation

As a brand known around the world for developing innovative techniques and successful formulas for a range of skin issues, iS Clinical has built its reputation on scientific research and clinical results. All products in the range are designed to promote healthy skin function at a cellular level, and the company is committed to incorporating the highest level of clinical validation in all of its products with numerous clinical studies attesting to the efficacy of its formulations.

A key fundamental point of differences is that iS Clinical has

independent clinical studies on the final formulations of their products, rather than on a single key feature ingredient. This is important to note, as a study on a single ingredient and not the final formulation begs the question: is that key ingredient effective in its performance when placed with other ingredients in the final formulation of a product?

All iS Clinical products have been formulated in a way that use multiple active ingredients (usually 8+ ingredients minimum) which are proven to work synergistically to improve efficacy. Importantly, this translates to products that are multi-tasking and multi-functioning, addressing not just one skin concern but a multitude of skin concerns.

Advancement in DNA repair enzymes: Extremozymes®

iS Clinical has harnessed the power of Extremozymes®, a proprietary combination of extremophilic enzymes, clinically proven to help protect and revitalise the foundation of healthy skin by combating moisture loss, dehydration, radiation, heat, cold and free radical damage. Extremozymes® are enzymes produced by plants living in extreme environments (extremophiles) that assist survival and adaptability. Extremophiles have developed a variety of ingenious survival strategies allowing them to regenerate, metabolise and reproduce in spite of very difficult environmental conditions. Their enzyme systems, extremozymes, protect vital biological macromolecules, cells and chromosomal DNA from damage by external stresses.

iS Clinical has drawn from the natural selection processes of specialised extremophilic organisms, pioneering

MEDICAL-GRADE SKINCARE • ANTI-AGEING

a new way to protect, revitalise and enhance the foundation of healthy skin, while supporting multi-level protection and long-term visible improvements.

Transformative ingredients

One of the standout ingredients in the iS Clinical range is Copper Tripeptide-1 Growth Factor. This protein is bio-identical and has been clinically proven to stimulate the synthesis of collagen in skin fibroblasts and increase accumulation of total proteins, glycosaminoglycans and DNA in dermal wounds. The Copper Tripeptide-1 sequence is present in collagen and it is suggested that it is released after tissue injury. Copper Tripeptide-1 also increases synthesis of decorin, a small proteoglycan in the regulation of collagen synthesis, wound-healing regulation and anti-tumour defence.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is also used extensively in the range, formulated within a unique proprietary combination of extremozymes including Trehalose, Arginine Ferulate, plankton extract and lecithin. This uniquely designed enzyme absorbs harmful free radicals to combat photoageing and cell damage while protecting the skin against future damage.

While many non enzymatic antioxidants are destroyed during antioxidant activity, this version of SOD defends itself and the skin from harmful aggressors that cause skin ageing.

iS Clinical in the clinic

It is important to optimise skin health before a cosmetic procedure – as the barrier function of the skin improves, recovery after cosmetic treatment is accelerated. iS Clinical products are pharmaceutical-grade cosmeceuticals designed to support the healthy function of skin and strengthen the skin barrier.

For post-procedure care, Sheald Recovery Balm can safely be applied on compromised skin, and even directly onto an open wound, to expedite healing and increase patient comfort. A clinical study on the effectiveness of iS Clinical Sheald Recovery Balm plus Cleansing Complex after fractionated laser procedures saw improved peeling and flaking by 41 percent following the use of Sheald Recovery Balm and Cleansing Complex, while re-epithelialisation was measured by a 54 percent improvement in rapidity of growth of new overlying epithelium in the treatment area. No adverse effects including redness, irritation, stinging, burning or itching were reported when Sheald Recovery Balm was placed on open skin. Physicians reported an increased rate of healing and significantly improved downtime.

The brand has recently added to its skincare line wth PerfecTint Powder SPF 40, a multi-level protectant with a hydrating, tinted matte finish. In additon to UV protection, PerfecTint Powder delivers clinically validated anti-inflammatory protection, strengthens the epidermal barrier, helps inhibit melanogenesis and hydrates the skin.

Using a global approach to research and development, the iS Clinical range combines botanical medicine with advanced scientific formulation, delivering clinically validated results to improve skin health in all skin types and patient subsets.

ADIP’SCULPT

In recent years the number of fat transfer procedures being performed worldwide has increased significantly. This is largely due to surgeons recognising that they can now provide their patients with a more natural and personalised treatment outcome. The filling and regenerative properties of adipose tissue make it an ideal choice for both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.

Adipose tissue is a sophisticated combination of many different cells, including adipocytes, progenitor cells and stem cells. To optimise the regenerative benefits of these cells and therefore achieve the expected outcomes with consistency,

the extraction instruments and technique must be controlled, validated and repeatable. Through years of research and development, Adip’sculpt has identified the key steps of the fat grafting technique. This has led to the development of innovative tools and protocols which provide adipose tissue of optimal quality and ensure high fat retention rates.

Adip’sculpt has developed a variety of all-in-one, disposable and user-friendly kits. Their wide product range allows surgeons to harvest and inject nano, micro and macro lobules for many different body areas and indications.

Emcyte is the world’s leading Platelet Rich Plasma system that achieves the purest samples of any PRP system with the lowest levels of red blood cells. The system is easy to use with fast processing times and treatment protocols designed to produce high-quality outcomes in a convenient timeframe.

Emcyte delivers consistency in therapeutic outcomes and goes beyond

HYDRAFACIAL

HydraFacial has taken the beauty and skincare worlds by storm with its impressive, instant results and ability to treat all skin types and age groups. Creating a brand-new category in skin health and beauty, it is an in-clinic treatment that uses a unique delivery system to cleanse, extract and hydrate.

HydraFacial offers the complete package for clearer, smoother, more radiant skin: exfoliation, deep cleaning, extraction and hydration infusion all in the one system, with no downtime and no discomfort. Delivering the results of a medical-grade facial in under 30 minutes, HydraFacial is more than a skin resurfacing technique - it’s a gamechanging skin experience.

HydraFacial delivers high levels of satisfaction that keeps patients returning, which in turn increases your revenue and promotes high levels of word-of-mouth referrals. Top-tier clinics in Australia consistently demonstrate the ability to earn back their investment in HydraFacial every 2-3 months.

HydraFacial is generations ahead of micro and hydrodermabrasion systems using diamond tips combined with water or solutions, which typically lack the power of serum infusions performed with HydraFacial’s Vortex Fusion technology. HydraFacial surpasses dermabrasion by including additional modalities such as skin peels, painless pore extractions, skin hydration and

antioxidant skin nutrition in a way that improves outcomes yet is gentle even on sensitive skin. Each stage of HydraFacial builds on the step before to create even better results. The result is a comprehensive rejuvenation without any one step being overly aggressive on the skin.

It differs from other skin resurfacing techniques in that it hydrates and ameliorates the skin surface of all skin types and conditions without irritation, discomfort or downtime. It is also ideal for almost every patient – from regular skin and beauty clients to cosmetic surgery patients.

How does HydraFacial work?

The HydraFacial uses patented Vortex Fusion technology to cleanse, extract and hydrate, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, congested and enlarged pores, oily or acne-prone skin, superficial hyperpigmentation and brown spots. Each treatment noticeably decongests and shrinks pores, while plumping the skin with antioxidant and hyaluronic acid infusions.

‘Patients see immediate results; they walk out with deep-cleansed, decongested skin and a restored, glowing epidermis,’ says Sydney dermatologist Dr Natasha Cook. ‘Flaky, dull skin is removed without trauma or irritation, and the instant serum infusion replenishes hydration levels in the skin,

‘AN INSTANT SKIN PICK-ME-UP THERAPY WITH NO DOWNTIME, THE HYDRAFACIAL IS A GREAT GLOBAL SKIN REJUVENATOR THAT CAN BE USED ON ALL SKIN TYPES, ALL AGE GROUPS AND ALL SEXES FOR IMMEDIATE NOTICEABLE IMPROVEMENT IN THE SKIN.’

– Dr Natasha Cook, Dermatologist, Sydney

making it particularly beneficial for irritant eczema or dry, inflamed winter skin.’

The treatment protocol for HydraFacial consists of cleansing, exfoliation, extracting (without trauma), and rejuvenating and hydrating the epidermis. Dead skin cells are removed with cleansing and exfoliation, followed by a mild AHA peel to soften the pores in preparation for extraction. The vortex suction extraction system is applied to fully decongest the skin.

The nourishing element involves an infusion of hydrating serums consisting of vortex-fused antioxidants and hyaluronic acid applied to the skin. Additional booster serums are applied following the extraction stage to target specific skin concerns and personalise the treatment to the patient.

The essential skin health tool

As a stand-alone treatment, HydraFacial offers fast and effective skin rejuvenation, creating instantly noticeable improvements in skin tone and texture that allow patients to experience visible results much earlier than most other treatments.

HydraFacial can also act as a powerful adjunct to other aesthetic treatments. When patients have healthier skin, the results of laser resurfacing, photorejuvenation, skin needling and surgery, and other advanced treatments, are improved. For example, research on HydraFacial in conjunction with IPL showed HydraFacial reduced lipid peroxidation and skin dehydration in IPL-treated skin.

With the ability to produce impressive results in a predictable manner across a range of skin types, HydraFacial remains a firm favourite with both practitioners and patients alike. ‘It’s an essential tool in any practice and can be used on pretty much everyone who walks through your door. It’s a guaranteed instant skin rejuvenator,’ says Dr Cook.

Minimum investment, maximum return

HydraFacial is a unique system with endless benefits. It fills a very niche gap, addressing many skin concerns that other treatments don’t offer. What’s more, HydraFacial is a treatment patients want to come back for. It’s affordable, and provides instant, lasting results, making it one of the smartest revenue-generating investments in the aesthetic practitioner’s clinic. Additionally, treatment can be performed by skin therapists, dermal clinicians, nurses and doctors, making it a practical addition to any aesthetic medical practice.

Key bene ts for practitioners

NEW! HYDRAFACIAL + RETINOL BOOSTER

HydraFacial has recently partened with Murad skincare to create the ultimate anti-ageing facial. Made especially for HydraFacial, the Murad Retinol Booster can now be added to HydraFacial treatments for targeted treatment of wrinkles and age-related skin concerns, accelerating the skin’s surface renewal and promoting a more radiant complexion.

The Retinol Booster boasts Retinol Tri-Active Technology (a fast-acting retinoid, time-released retinol and a retinol booster all in one) to help combat fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone and loss of radiance. The serum also includes micronised collagen peptides to promote an immediate increase in hydration and to help skin hold more water for a firmer, more dewy appearance.

In addition to the Murad retinol booster, HydraFacial has partnered with other well known skincare brands to produce a wide range of boosters that target specific skin concerns such as hydration, pigmentation, redness, and fine lines and wrinkles. The availability of all these boosters mean that Hydrafacial treatments can be personalised to each and every patient.

‘I HAVE ONLY EVER HAD POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM OUR PATIENTS WITH REGARDS TO THE HYDRAFACIAL. OUR PATIENTS REPORT AN IMPROVEMENT IN THEIR SKIN AFTER THE FIRST TREATMENT. MANY TELL US HOW FRESH THEIR SKIN FEELS BOTH IMMEDIATELY AND IN THE DAYS FOLLOWING TREATMENT.’

HYDRAFACIAL QUICK FACTS

What is the HydraFacial?

In a nutshell, it is a relaxing 30-minute facial that combines a number of modalities, including cleansing, exfoliation, an acid peel, extraction, hydration and infusions, as well as skin protection.

How

is the HydraFacial different to traditional microdermabrasion?

The first step of Hydrafacial incorporates elements of dermabrasion by utilising a patented spiral Hydropeel tip combined with cleansing serums. Hydrafacial then steps beyond microdermabrasion by including additional steps such as painless pore extractions, mild skin peels and nourishing antioxidant serums infusions that work in synergy to achieve better results. The result is more comprehensive, leaving the skin radiant and glowing without irritation, discomfort or downtime.

What does a HydraFacial treatment Involve?

There are three steps to the treatment, two of which focus on cleansing, while one targets nourishment and hydration. Hydrafacial begins with cleansing and exfoliation to remove dead cells and debris that might be clinging to the complexion’s surface. This is followed by a glycolic and salicylic acid peel to soften congestion in the pores in preparation for the extraction stage. Next, a vortex suction extraction system is applied to fully decongest the skin, which leaves the pores open and ready to receive serums. The skin is now prepared for the nourishing part of the procedure, which involves infusing highly active hydrating serums. The serums are advanced formulas consisting of

antioxidants and hyaluronic acid, applied to nourish and protect the skin.

What results can patients expect?

No matter what age or demographic, patients can look forward to glowing, radiant and better hydrated skin after their first treatment. With a series of treatments, this will of course improve, particularly when backed up with proper at-home skin care routines. It’s even effective in treating congested or acneprone skin. It can be used as a one-off ‘radiance booster’, or regularly (once a month is recommended) to maintain a youthful, luminous complexion.

Can it be performed alongside other procedures?

Yes, in fact, it can complement and enhance the results of many other surgical and non-surgical procedures, including facelifts, blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty and other facial cosmetic surgery.

It also works well in conjunction with peels, skin needling, laser skin resurfacing treatments and injectable facial rejuvenation. It is also effective when used between more aggressive laser skin treatments.

Can any skin type benefit from HydraFacial?

Yes – all skin types, tones and textures will benefit from this treatment. It is noninvasive and non-reactive, and it works on all skin types and conditions. It’s perfect for preparing skin for a special occasion, addressing dull, uneven skin tones in need of invigoration and of course restoring much-needed moisture to dry skin.

HYDRAFACIAL IN PRACTICE: Q&A WITH DR STEVEN LIEW, PLASTIC SURGEON, SYDNEY

Q: What are your patients saying about HydraFacial?

My patients love it. It’s instant gratification with no downtime. Makeup goes on much easier post treatment and it enhances all the benefits of any other treatments they may choose to have in clinic.

Q: Do you find the results are immediate?

Yes – they are immediate and there is no downtime. Sometimes patients want to have a really effective treatment but without the downtime. They may have social, family or work commitments and downtime is just not an option, yet they are still after healthy, smooth, glowing skin. HydraFacial ticks all these boxes.

We also have a booster to temporarily plump up the skin, designed to smooth the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and stimulate collagen and elastin production.

Q: Do the results improve with time?

HydraFacial keeps the skin in great condition – glowing, clear and with refined pores, alongside appropriate use of skincare at home.

Q: Is the treatment comfortable?

The treatment does not hurt and is quite relaxing. There is the ability to perform lymphatic drainage before the treatment, too, which aids relaxation. You can also adjust the suction according to the needs of the patient, the congestion or the fragility of the skin.

Q: What other procedures would you use it as an adjunct to?

HydraFacial is perfect alongside a great homecare regime and some LED light therapy to really kickstart the skin’s immune system, promote healing, increase blood flow and oxygenate the skin. It can also reduce redness, relieve pain and promote skin rejuvenation.

Q: What benefit do you believe it has brought to your practice?

We are now able to fully treat each patient who walks through the doors. We have non-invasive skin treatments with no downtime, to more intensive laser therapies, injectables and many other modalities all the way up to plastic surgery.

GET BACK TO THE REAL YOU.

Thermage pioneered the science of noninvasive RF energy for the treatment of lax skin. It uses monopolar RF to create bulk heating in the deeper, collagen-rich layers of skin. This causes collagen to contract and encourages new collagen to start growing.

WHAT DOCTORS ARE SAYING ABOUT THERMAGE:

“Thermage is the pioneering noninvasive tightening device in its class, with the most research and studies to back its technology. Its newest evolution has even more comfort and safety features than before, and offers consistent results with good patient selection.

“Thermage FLX is one of the best skin tightening devices on the market for mild to moderate laxity on areas of the face and neck and off the face. If you are looking at a treatment with minimal

downtime, relative comfort and results that continue to improve for months, Thermage FLX is ideal.

“It also lends itself to combination treatment protocols, and I love combining Thermage FLX and Fraxel. Fraxel improves the surface of the skin, eradicating sunspots, lightening pigmentation and improving tone and texture, while Thermage FLX causes a tightening and contracture of deeper structures for non-invasive skin tightening. It is outstanding for lower and mid-face, eyes and submental region for patients with mild to moderate laxity looking for non-invasive skin tightening. It can also be used off the face in areas that require tightening, such as the abdomen or thighs.”

REVEAL YOUR RADIANCE.

Fraxel is the original fractional laser treatment that revolutionised skin resurfacing technology with a laser that offers decreased recovery time and risk of adverse events, and is suitable for all skin types. Patients can see a noticeable improvement after as little as one treatment. Fraxel can help address sun damage, pigmentation, actinic keratosis, melasma, acne and surgical scars.

WHAT DOCTORS ARE SAYING ABOUT FRAXEL:

“Fraxel is one of our most popular treatments due to its effectiveness and therefore high patient satisfaction. The confidence Fraxel gives to men and women of all ages is why I love my job.

“Fraxel offers extensive options to treat patients; it’s very versatile. We most commonly use Fraxel for treating superficial skin conditions such as skin ageing, sun spots, hyperpigmentation, acne scarring and rejuvenation of the neck and hands. It also allows us to improve deeper conditions such as acne scarring, facial lines and surgical scars. Patients love the results, especially those with sun damage as the results are instant. The recovery process is very quick in all patients, with fewer complications.”

– Dr Nina Wines, Dermatologist, Sydney

“We use Fraxel’s1927nm wavelength for lifting hyperpigmentation, age spots and pre-cancer spots. The 1550nm targets skin texture as well as fine line and wrinkles and acne scarring. The versatility of Fraxel allows us to treat concerns on the face, neck, chest and hands. Treatment is relatively non-invasive, making it ideal

for most skin types, and can be performed year-round.”

– Dr Elizabeth Dawes-Higgs, Dermatologist, Sydney

“Fraxel’s versatility, durability and satisfaction rates for both patients and practitioners over the years, despite competition, is a testament to the technology and the brand. With appropriate patient selection, results are consistent, and it allows for treatment of multiple skin concerns both on the face and body, as well as having a high safety profile and very manageable downtime.”

– Dr Shobhan Manoharan, Dermatologist, Brisbane

“I believe Fraxel laser is the best option to treat sun-damaged skin. It is ideal to address uneven skin tone, treat fine lines and to achieve a tightening effect to the skin. Pore size improves and it helps restore the skin’s natural glow. Fraxel also improves scarring and I find people living in regional Australia, where we practice, often have scarring on their face from skin cancer surgery.

“We purchased our Fraxel in June 2014, and therefore have been providing this treatment for over seven years. It is an effective, reliable, all-round treatment that has been available for many years, and it is still my favourite go-to treatment when it comes to treating sun-damaged skin.

“My patients frequently remark ‘my skin has not felt this good in years’ or ‘I love my skin again’. Fraxel is one of the most rewarding treatments we offer in our clinic.”

– Dr Eddie Roos, Cosmetic Physician, Toowoomba, Qld

PREVENTATIVE

GET BACK THE GLOW.

Clear + Brilliant uses fractional technology in a gentle approach to laser skincare to help prevent or improve the early unwanted signs of ageing. The Permea 1927nm handpiece boosts patient outcomes by increasing skin permeability to topical antioxidant serums by up to 17x without affecting the skin’s barrier function. Clear + Brilliant treatments are designed for all skin types and offer minimal downtime.

WHAT DOCTORS ARE SAYING ABOUT CLEAR + BRILLIANT:

“Fraxel and Clear + Brilliant use the same technology but in different ways to offer a well-rounded treatment program. I own two Fraxels and one Clear + Brilliant. Over the past decade, these devices have been essential to my Cutis Clinic and Cutis Medical practices and a true workhorse that we use day in, day out.

“Both devices complement each other beautifully. It means we can offer a complete treatment plan incorporating both devices or use whichever device is more suitable for the patient’s needs. This includes offering treatments (that actually work) with limited downtime

such as the Clear + Brilliant. We can also utilise the Clear + Brilliant for darker skin types for rejuvenation and conditions such as melasma.

“The addition of the Permea handpiece has changed how we use Clear + Brilliant. We utilise the Permea device constantly and have seen incredible results with minimal downtime.”

– Dr Davin Lim, Dermatologist, Brisbane

“The Clear + Brilliant laser packs a real punch when it comes to skin improvement with minimal downtime. It is a great treatment that suits most skin types and helps to treat a lot of skin conditions: fine lines, crepey skin, pigmentation, sun damage, facial redness and more.

“And it’s not just limited to the face. It can be used on most areas of the body including the neck, chest and hands. Clear + Brilliant is a great tool to help us bring back glow to the skin of our clients, regardless of whether they live in cities or regional settings.”

REFINE YOUR FIGURE.

VASERlipo is shaking up the world of liposuction with an alternative to the harsh techniques of traditional liposuction. It is an advanced body sculpting procedure, unique in its ability to eliminate large areas of fat and suitable to treat more delicate areas. Experience less surgeon fatigue, and less patient trauma and downtime compared with traditional liposuction.

WHAT DOCTORS ARE SAYING ABOUT VASERLIPO”

“I have been using VASERlipo since 2005 due to its efficacy, reliability and ease of treatment, its ability to enable me to treat areas and subjects traditionally difficult, as well as helping to avoid the physical fatigue of performing liposculpture.

“VASERlipo is a third-generation ultrasound, which makes its mechanism of action different and more efficient than the previous generations. It works by resonance, which means it requires less energy to deliver the results, so there is less probability of thermal injuries. This translates into patients feeling less pain and swelling after treatment.

“An additional advantage is the pulsed mode (VASER mode) that allows us to do a very superficial emulsification, which is key for skin retraction and also for artistic contouring. VASERlipo also provides the surgeon with extra options in areas and subjects that were traditionally difficult to treat. The penetration and efficacy of treatment of fibrotic tissue is far easier with the use of this technology.”

LONG-LASTING FILLER • FACE CONTOURING

AQUAMID® & AQUAMID® RECONSTRUCTION

The Aquamid® range is a biocompatible, non-allergenic and non-absorbable hydrogel consisting of 97.5% water and 2.5% crosslinked polyacrylamide for soft tissue augmentation and for reconstructive purposes.

As it does not degrade over time, the results remain for years, making it the ideal choice for patients who are looking for the convenience and costeffectiveness of long-term solutions. Aquamid is hydrophilic, allowing continuous water exchange between the hydrogel and the surrounding tissue, thus preventing biofilm formation. In comparison to fillers with microparticles, Aquamid’s filling effect does not rely on an intended foreign body reaction to micro-particles acting as host irritants. Therefore, Aquamid does not elicit tissue hardening or fibrosis. Aquamid becomes fully integrated with the tissue via a fine fibrous network. It does not migrate from the injection site. Aquamid is uniquely suited to replace lost tissue volume due to ageing or

to add extra volume where needed, to achieve optimal facial contours. Aquamid Reconstruction has a higher viscosity, making it ideal for replacing volume in larger areas and for reconstructive purposes.

Aquamid has a proven track record for safety and efficacy, based on experience since 2001 including more than 400,000 treatments. The efficacy and safety of Aquamid have been documented in a number of international clinical studies and published in peerreviewed journals involving more than 5,000 patients.

Aquamid is a unique soft volume filler – as supple and elastic as skin itself – which integrates naturally with the body’s own tissue, making it imperceptible to both sight and touch. The only thing to see and feel is a more youthful, beautiful face. Whether to smooth out wrinkles and folds or to enhance facial contours, Aquamid treatment is quick, instantaneously effective, and causes minimal aesthetic downtime.

LE MED NASAL SPLINT

The Le Med Nasal Splint has a number of unique features, making it ideal for use post surgical and injectable rhinoplasty, after nose injury or trauma and to reshape and enhance the appearance of the nose.

It comes in four sizes (petite, small, medium, large) and can help minimise and prevent many complications such as swelling, oedema, haemorrhage, implant displacement, filler migration, malposition, step and open roof deformity.

Le Med Nasal Splint is ergonomically shaped to follow the anatomical contour of nasal bone, facial bone and orbit to provide maximum comfort. The rounded edges avoid demarcation on the patient’s skin and increases comfort. The gentle, constant compression force applied to the nose helps expedite the healing process while reducing bruising, swelling and post-operative pain.

As opposed to conventional splints, the device is practically invisible, with no external taping. The transparent material allows the practitioner visual access to monitor swelling, bleeding, bruising, infection, inflammation, skin demarcation, skin ulceration and skin necrosis from day one so action can be taken swiftly to avoid any long-term complications.

Additionally, the inconspicuous appearance, comfort and reduction in postoperative pain and complications leads to greater patient compliance.

Le Med Nasal Splint ensures improved medical results, assisting in moulding the “new” nose to the desired shape.

DR JAYSON OATES FRACS ENT, MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF CALIBRE CLINIC, DISCUSSES THE LE MED NASAL SPLINT

When do you use Le Med Nasal Splint?

I provide the Le Med Nasal Splint to all of my surgical rhinoplasty patients, and have done so since I first started using Le Med in early 2021.

What are the advantages of Le Med Nasal Splint over conventional splints?

I remove the operative splint after one week, but as soon as I take the original splint off, the nose starts to swell. I think the Le Med splint helps reduce that swelling.

Additionally, for a long time I have noticed during the recovery period of a surgical rhinoplasty that during the day the swelling goes down. Then, at night, with the head down, the nose swells up again. This is where the Le Med Splint is of most benefit – as it is easier for the patient to comply with overnight wearing requirements. They don’t get the increase in swelling at night, so then the nose stays smaller during the day.

Do your patients prefer the Le Med Nasal Splint to a conventional splint?

They prefer the Le Med to the splint placed at the end of the operation. They can take the Le Med splint off during the day. They can also adjust the position of it on the nose and how tight it feels, so they can minimise their discomfort while wearing it.

My nurses can explain how to use it in a minute or so and patients find it easy to use, too.

Hyalu Serum 2.3 used in conjunction with LED (photobiomodulation)

HYALU SERUM 2.3

From Innoderm Laboratoire, France, this natural and biologically safe anti-ageing serum provides the most efficient combination of ingredients for moisturising, improving wrinkles and enhancing the results of aesthetic procedures, especially skin needling.

Hyalu Serum 2.3 anti-ageing complex is made with only three biologically derived key ingredients that occur naturally in the skin’s structure – hyaluronan, sodium lactate and glycerol – reducing the chances of a reaction to ingredients in more complex serum formulations.

While most topical skin products contain no more than 8 percent of active ingredients, Hyalu Serum 2.3 contains an incomparable 23 percent and only 0.5 percent essential conservation content, providing maximum efficiency and efficacy.

The selection and the maximum concentration of active ingredients guarantees faster visible results. From the very first week of use:

• ‘Glow’, softness and flexibility of the epidermis is restored

• Fine lines and wrinkles are less visible

• Facial contour appears firmer.

Hyalu Serum 2.3’s prescribed use is as a daily application prior to sealing with a protective (SPF or moisturiser), however it also doubles as the perfect solution for your client’s post-treatment skincare needs.

Many therapists also utilise the Hyalu Serum 2.3 for superior hydration in conjunction with skin needling, LED treatments or post-laser treatment to complement in-clinic procedures and provide superb results.
