Iam delighted to invite the ITS community to the 16th ITS European Congress, taking place in Seville from 19 to 21 May 2025. ▶ The Demonstration Programme: See the Future in Action
The Demonstration Programme is your chance to witness the future of mobility firsthand. Over three days, you'll experience live demonstrations showcasing the latest innovations in autonomous vehicles, connected infrastructure, electric mobility and more. These aren't just passive displays—they're interactive experiences that allow you to engage with the technologies and understand their realworld applications.
One of the most exciting aspects is the autonomous vehicle showcase. Picture yourself riding in a self-driving shuttle that navigates complex urban environments with ease, using advanced sensors and AI to avoid obstacles and optimise routes. Or riding in an autonomous driving 12-metre bus (with an open-source toolkit) in this dynamic demonstration. And sticking with autonomous innovation, there is a demonstration of autonomous valet parking with cooperative infrastructure, where the vehicle will use an infrastructuremounted camera to detect potential risks involving vulnerable road users (VRU). The vehicle will process this information accordingly and complete the parking manoeuvre safely.
Another highlight is the drone demonstration, where you'll see how RPAs operate in Spain for surveillance and traffic regulation using two different models: Phantom 4 under Traffic Regulation missions and Matrice 200 under surveillance missions.
The programme also includes a demonstration of data-driven decisions, focused on parking, that empower smart cities in the fight against various challenges, including congestion, a growing number of cars, and limited space.
And don’t miss the SafeRoads Maxwell System demonstration, a patented system for tracking the speed and type of personal mobility vehicles (PMV) such as bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters for control and law
enforcement. Participants will see the data that the system can extract.

For a deeper dive into the practical applications of ITS, the Technical Tour Programme takes you out of the conference halls and into the field, where you'll explore real-world implementations of smart mobility solutions in and around Seville. The sustainable urbanisation project in Seville’s New Urban Port District (DUP) presents an opportunity to trial innovative mobility solutions. In partnership with CTAG, this proof-of-concept (PoC) will demonstrate autonomous, connected shuttles in real-world scenarios.
Operating between Torre del Oro and Seville Aquarium—with extensions to the cruise terminal on select days—the Level 4 autonomous, V2X-enabled service showcases the future of urban transport.

Why the ITS Congress in Seville is Worth Every Mile: A Veteran's Perspective
Prof Eric Sampson, Chief Rapporteur, ITS European Congress 2025, provides his personal perspective on Congresses in general and the Seville event in particular
Around three months ago I was asked why it was worth travelling 3,000 km to a transport conference when many similar were being held inside the UK. e answer is that wherever they are held, the ITS Congresses are di erent in the way that the Olympic Games are di erent from, say, the Luxembourg Cycling Championships –more depth, greater breadth and the coming together of the world’s best.
I’ve been organising or attending ITS Congresses since 1994, and they are my professional education and refreshment. During Congresses I get updates on what has been happening with established programmes of work. But I will also hear about new ideas for research programmes, products, services. And although I know I will meet a number of key international colleagues for a catch-up, I will have “unknown” meetings. I can guarantee that I will meet new people and have unplanned discussions on issues with them – unplanned as we have not met before and were brought together by the Congress and a mutual interest in what it o ers.
So why am I going to Seville?
Well, for the active participation. At ITS Congresses you can ask questions, meet the presenters between sessions, contribute spontaneously at workshops and stakeholder meetings, start a new business or research partnership
Also, it’s an unparalleled network opportunity: if I think of the 20 international experts I would most like to hear from or talk to, I estimate 16 of them will be in Seville
PLUS the seven new specialists I have yet to meet – and I’m con dent I’ll meet them as we’re both there
en there’s the fact that my attendance will enable me to hear about hot topics in depth and with breadth: a mix of achievements, research, other work-inprogress and strategies so you see and learn about what works today, what’s coming over the horizon, but also experience what the leading players are preparing for next year’s products and services
Another important reason for me to attend Congresses is to go to the managed Special Sessions to listen to experts as they dig deeply into selected subjects with enhanced audience interaction.
Seville-speci c reasons
ose reasons to attend ITS Congresses apply generally but, in the case of this Congress, there are some Seville-speci c reasons I can outline.
Firstly, three Plenary sessions where international names will look into the transition to a more sustainable society via green technology and human-centred solutions; how to embed resilience into our mobility systems; and how to encourage the deployment of connected and automated mobility.
ere will be a number of discussions on new ways to collect and use data including updates on developments with the European Data Mobility Space and National Access Points (NAPs) for data.
I am looking forward to brie ngs and consultation discussions on the
progress towards a multimodal integrated communication infrastructure using terrestrial 5G and beyond, linked to spacebased communications.
en there’s numerous EU-funded projects which will describe their achievements; presentations and debates on the role of unmanned aerial devices (‘drones’) and their role in freight and passenger services as well as sensors and observation devices; sessions explaining a wide range of uses for digital twins; the 'Cinderella' topic of rural mobility has a high-pro le session; and, of course, many speakers will give a variety of examples on the application of Arti cial Intelligence techniques.
at’s just a small sample!
In addition to the elements that di erentiate the Congress from an ordinary trade show and make it special – the presentation of technical or research papers plus the moderated specialist discussions – there will be a large exhibition where the mobility suppliers show what is now available o -theshelf. We will also enjoy three social events where you can chat to fellow delegates in very informal atmospheres including the traditional Congress Gala Dinner in a sparkling local venue.
is is my brief account of why I’ll be going to Seville in May. It will be three days' hard work, but I know it will be enjoyable too with the excitement of learning new things, seeing new devices and services, catching up with old friends and making new friends.

The city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has pursued this goal through a collaboration with TomTom and Esri Spain. SAGULPA, the public company responsible for transportation and mobility in the city, aimed to leverage advanced geospatial data and analytics to create a digital twin of the urban area and better manage tourism on the island. Their goal was to understand how people moved across the city and how tra c patterns would change during periods of high tourist activity.
By leveraging TomTom’s robust tra c data and utilizing ArcGIS, they were able to rapidly deploy interactive maps and applications without the need for extensive IT support. Three main applications emerged from this initiative: a safety dashboard designed to monitor tra c flow, a public transportation and emergency response planning tool, and an event tra c analysis application for managing large-scale events.
These applications provide city authorities with interactive and actionable insights, leading to enhanced tra c safety, optimized public transportation routes, and improved event management.
