Legacy, resilience, passion, care, and support. These are just a few of the words that spring to the top of the mind a er reading the great mix of stories in this month's edition of your Deals on Wheels magazine.

Our cover story takes us to regional Victoria where the Krekas Bros Transport business has evolved from one truck to 50, bringing three generations of the family along for the ride.

The heritage, the history, and the pride of taking nothing and turning it into something great is captured not only in the business evolution, but in the painstaking restoration of the company's rst truck by family members and their supporters.

somewhere in Australia, most weekends, helping each other out, but also the broader communities in which they are based.

Shining examples of this are the truck shows organised by community volunteers to support the transport industry and raise funds for worthy local causes along the way.

I was lucky enough to get along to the Alexandra Truck Show on the King's Birthday weekend this year, and once again, was blown away by the way the event brings people together.

Alexandra and its surrounding area had a terrible start to 2026 with bush res reaping havoc on local families and farms.

This old green chevy represents more than just four wheels and an engine - it is part of the fabric of the local community, a mainstay of family outings, school transport and classic stories that have become folklore with the re-telling (see page 12).

The Krekas Bros story is a re ection of much of the transport industry, where families have taken the need to move their own goods to market and then realised other families, without trucks, needed help shi ing their products too. Hard work and great service increases demand, and then the second, third, fourth ... truck is added and a eet is born.

Underlying it all is a dedication to service, and it's a culture that stretches beyond the commercial transaction, and into a community that can be found gathering

Even though many are still recovering from the devastation, it felt like every local that could make it out, was walking up and down the main street of the CBD on the Sunday, checking out the trucks, chatting to the local shopkeepers and friends, and just being part of something bigger than themselves for a few hours (see page 60).

There's de nitely something in the gathering of like-minded people that can help our mental health - maybe it's realising we are not alone. Warren Aitken found out a bit about this when he attended The Drive for Depression Truck Meet in Queensland - an event created speci cally to support truckies and their families (see page 70).

Healthy Heads is trialling a new system designed to tackle burnout, fatigue and psychological injury

Healthy Heads in Trucks & Sheds has announced the launch of an industry- rst psycho-social risk management pilot, Healthy Heads Thrive, in collaboration with AP Psychology & Consulting Services and Gallagher Bassett.

The pilot has already attracted up to 10 businesses across the transport, warehousing and logistics sector that will take part in the trial, including Lindsays, JATEC and Eather Group.

As part of the initiative, these organisations will trial a digitally enabled end-to-end psycho-social risk management system built for the sector, helping employers identify workplace hazards, assess risks and implement practical workplace control measures before issues escalate into psychological injury.

With rising mental health claims, the launch comes at a critical time amid increasing regulatory scrutiny and growing concern around burnout, fatigue, isolation and workforce retention across the sector.

Further claims insights from Gallagher Bassett show psychological injuries account for 12 per cent of serious claims but cost more than four times as much as physical injuries on average ($67,000 compared to $16,000), with claims lasting an average of 35.7 weeks.

“Despite growing awareness and increasing regulatory attention around psychosocial safety, many businesses still lack a practical, end-to-end approach to managing these risks in operational environments,” Healthy Heads in Trucks & Sheds general manager Melissa Weller says.

“Across transport and logistics, many of the conditions impacting mental health and well-being have become normalised because people are deeply committed to getting the job done.

“Psychological health is no longer a ‘nice to

have’ conversation. Healthy Heads Thrive has been designed by the industry, for the industry, to help businesses systematically identify, assess and manage psychosocial hazards in a practical and scalable way.”

AP Psychology & Consulting Services founder and CEO Arthur Papagiannis says that people working across the industry are exposed to a unique combination of psychosocial hazards, including fatigue, high job demands, isolation, trauma exposure and ongoing operational pressure.

“These risks o en build over time rather than resulting from a single incident, making it harder to identify early and manage e ectively,” he says.

“Healthy Heads Thrive will give businesses a practical, evidence-based framework to assess psychosocial risks, develop action plans and build leadership capability across the organisation.”

Gallagher Bassett head of sales and client services Debbie Vounakis says that while psychological injuries represent a smaller proportion of serious claims overall, they are typically more complex, longer lasting, and signi cantly more costly than physical injuries.

“Proactive risk identi cation and assessment are therefore critical to addressing emerging issues before they escalate,” she says. “This pilot represents an important step towards earlier intervention and prevention, supporting better outcomes across the sector.”

The Healthy Heads Thrive pilot is expected to help businesses move beyond awareness and into meaningful action, giving the transport, logistics and warehousing sector clearer systems, tools and support to create a psychologically healthier, safer and more sustainable workplace.

restored 1957 Chevrolet celebrates the resilience, sacri ce and success behind a Victorian transport empire

This old 1957 Chevrolet has rolled over, lost wheels, hauled fruit, helped build a transport empire and brought generations of a family together.

Almost 70 years a er George and Arthur Kreskas purchased it second-hand from a local wrecking yard, the truck still stands as a symbol of one of regional Victoria's great transport success stories.

“This truck is a testament to the grit and resourcefulness of a family that started with very little and built a business and legacy that has endured for generations,” Arthur Kreskas says.

The Kreskas story began in 1939 when the

family migrated from Northern Greece to Australia. In 1954, Arthur and George, together with their brother-in-law Con Dimstas, purchased an orchard at Lemnos, near Shepparton, determined to build a future for their families.

The orchard quickly became the family's livelihood, but disaster struck in 1956 when devastating oods destroyed the peach crops. The setback forced the family to rethink their future and ultimately set them on a path that would change their lives.

"The oods that destroyed our orchard were the de ning challenge that ultimately created the business," Arthur says. "Adversity was turned into opportunity."

By the early 1960s, Arthur had purchased a Chevrolet truck from Shepparton Auto Wreckers to transport produce to SPC and Melbourne's wholesale markets. What began as a practical solution soon became a growing transport operation.

As the orchard struggled to support three families, Con and his family moved to Melbourne in 1964, leaving Arthur and George to forge a new direction.

Using the Chevrolet, the brothers expanded their transport work, carrying fruit from their own orchard and neighbouring properties,

o en making two trips a day to Melbourne and occasional runs to Sydney.

That single truck became the foundation of Kreskas Bros Transport, formally established in 1967.

For all its hard work, the Chevrolet was never just a truck. George and Arthur's sons remember spending countless hours riding in the cab and tray, joining their fathers on shing trips and weekend outings.

The truck also played a role in the local community, with the brothers once using it to transport dozens of schoolchildren into Shepparton for sports days – a di erent era by today's standards, but one that re ected the community spirit of the time.

As the years passed, the business continued to grow. By the late 1970s, Kreskas Bros Transport was carrying a signi cant share of the fresh produce leaving the Goulburn Valley.

A major contract secured in 1988 saw the company move into containerised freight, opening opportunities within the dairy sector and helping shape the business it is today.

The transition from wooden produce boxes to shipping containers required another major evolution, but the family adapted as it had done before, continuing to grow alongside a changing transport industry.

Today, Kreskas Bros Transport operates a eet of 50 trucks and remains the largest road

carrier of shipping containers between the Port of Melbourne and regional Victoria.

More than 70 years a er the family purchased the original orchard, the business still operates from the same site and is now supported by three generations of the Kreskas family.

At 91 years of age, Arthur has the privilege of watching his sons, Les and John, and grandsons, Josh and Bayley, continue building the business he and George started more than half a century ago.

Fittingly, the truck that started it all has recently been restored.

Retired in the early 1980s, the Chevrolet sat dormant for more than 40 years before restoration work began in 2021.

During the project, the truck's original 261-cubic-inch engine was rediscovered.

"The original engine was found sitting in a wooden crate and went back into the truck it was born in," Arthur says.

That single decision – made decades earlier by a man who understood the value of keeping things – is what makes this restoration special.

The engine was painstakingly rebuilt by George's son, Cohn Kreskas, ensuring the Chevrolet retained its original matchingnumbers drivetrain.

The Kreskas family wanted to keep this restoration process thorough and commit to preserving the truck’s originality.

First, they stripped it down. The truck was completely disassembled, with every component assessed by the family.

Then the original 262 cubic inch engine was rebuilt, however throughout that process, the team discovered damaged camsha lobes that had been causing mis ring. These were replaced as part of a complete engine overhaul.

One notable improvement made during the rebuild was replacing the original rope rear main seal (which used graphite and was notorious for leaking oil) with a modern rubber seal.

“This is a common and practical upgrade for

engines of this era that maintains the integrity of the rebuild, while solving a known design aw from General Motors, and was also completed by the family,” Arthur says.

Where possible, the truck was rebuilt with its original components, with only necessary modern improvements incorporated, before the nal details were added like tting the mirrors and the addition of a swan emblem on the bonnet.

This build took approximately four years to complete. Given the level of detail involved and the commitment to keeping the engines matching numbers, that timeline re ects the care put into the project.

Like any truck with a lifetime on the road, the Chevrolet has accumulated its fair share of stories.

"On one occasion, a wheel came o in the centre of town and rolled straight through the window of a nearby home," Arthur laughs.

"Nobody was hurt, but it's the kind of story

that gets better every time it's retold around the family dinner table."

Another incident saw the truck roll over at the infamous Pretty Sally a er a front spring broke while carrying a full load of fruit to Melbourne.

In recognition of their contribution to Victoria's transport industry, the Kreskas family were inducted into the Museum of Vehicle Evolution's Avenue of Legends in 2022.

Today, the restored Chevrolet represents far more than a vintage truck. It tells the story of two immigrant brothers who turned adversity into opportunity and built one of regional Victoria's most successful transport businesses.

"This truck was never just a piece of equipment," Arthur says.

"It was woven into the fabric of daily life for a family that lived and breathed work, and it collected memories the way old trucks collect miles."

For the Kreskas family, the old Chevrolet

remains a symbol of resilience, hard work and family. What began with two brothers, a oodravaged orchard and a second-hand truck has grown into a thriving transport company, with its legacy now carried forward by a third generation.

It’s nearly time. The event that truckies and their supporters from around the country have been waiting for is just over a week away, and the excitement is high.

Since its inception in 2012, when 83 trucks turned out, Casino Truck Show has become one of Australia’s biggest industry gatherings, and this year is sure to keep that tradition alive.

Held in the northern NSW town of Casino the show has evolved into a two-day extravaganza of chrome, music, food, and tall tales.

Visitors this year can expect to see 550 trucks on show through the main streets of Casino’s CBD, 200 trucks roll past on Saturday morning for the truck parade, and about 70 truckies take to the main stage on

Saturday a ernoon as an extensive array of trophies are handed out across a vast array of judging categories.

The Casino Truck Show is an event for everyone – all makes and models of trucks, and all uses, are celebrated, while live music, food stalls, children’s rides, ra es, community stalls, and local business specials add to the mix for visitors, whether they drive a truck or not.

Last year, more than 40,000 people rolled through Casino during the truck show week, adding $4.98 million to the Richmond Valley economy.

Way back in June camping at the showgrounds was booked out, with organisers agging the potential to release just a few more sites closer to the big days, if the weather looks dry.

The event attracts participants for as far away as Perth, and plenty of guests from New Zealand and overseas who have heard about the fun to be had an added Casino to their itinerary.

The charity auction is always a winner.

From a dream-built design to a showground star, Lyn Mackenzie’s tiny truck stops crowds instantly

Being ve foot one, it tends to be a bit di cult for Lyn Mackenzie to get in and out of big trucks.

A er asking why she decided to purchase her current truck, Lyn responded with, “Well, you’ve got to laugh about it.”

“My husband's got an MK Bedford, which is a four wheel drive truck, and initially it was for us to go and do shows in. But me being only ve foot one – I could not get back into the truck,” she laughs.

“So, my husband said, well alright, we’ll buy

a little truck for you to get into. And that's how it happened.”

“There's a lot of these little trucks around, and we had been looking for one just like that. So, when we saw this rig for sale in Sydney, we went down and had a look, took it for a drive, and bought it. And that was now a year ago.”

The little truck Lyn is referring to is her 1995 Suzuki Kei Carry, decked out in racing clothes and powered by a 660cc mid mounted 3-cylinder engine through a 5-speed gearbox.

But the design, is a whole other story.

“My husband kept directing me on how I should or shouldn’t decorate my truck, and I thought, no – I’m not going to have anybody tell me what to do,” Lyn says.

“Then consequently, I had a dream about a checkered ag, and it went from there really.”

“I went to a guy; he got the design up on the computer and then we wrapped it in the checkered ag print and added a bit of red to it for a splash of colour.”

When Lyn rst laid eyes on the little rig, it was in an overall good condition, but since then, a bit of work has had to be done.

“The mu ers have been put on, and we’ve put bigger tires on her along with the new wrap,” she says.

“We've also put a wooden tray on the back of it that my husband built. And on the side of the door, it reads, ‘Lynny's lil Tonka.’”

The Suzuki is strictly used for shows, but on the odd occasion, Lyn may pick up something small with it.

“We’ve done a couple of shows with this truck at Williamtown Fighter World, and the last one we did was from Berowra to Swansea, and that was an absolutely great trip,” Lyn says.

“A lot of people at Coasting the Coast were out with their cameras standing on the side of the road, waving and taking photos, so we would get out and have a chat with them about the truck.

“So many people come up to it at the shows and say how much they absolutely love it.”

And with more events already pencilled into the calendar, including a major show-andshine at Nelson Bay, Lyn's tiny showstopper looks set to keep attracting crowds for a long time yet.

A er all, when you've got a truck that was designed by a dream, carries your name on the door and leaves people lining the roadside with cameras in hand, you're clearly doing something right.

Scenic Rim Truck Show raised an incredible $42,128 for the KIDS Foundation, signi cantly surpassing last year’s generous total

There were solid crowds down at the show, and a staggering $42,128.48 was raised for the KIDS Foundation

Event organiser Tracey Armstrong couldn’t have been more thrilled a er a staggering $42,128.48 was raised for the KIDS Foundation at the Scenic Rim Truck Show on May 30.

For Tracey, that gure alone made every early morning, late-night planning session and last-minute challenge worthwhile.

“It felt absolutely amazing,” Tracey says. “We raised over $12,000 more than last year’s total, so we were super happy.”

“This show means a lot to our team, as we are quite close to the KIDS Foundation, we even volunteered for them down in Gundy two weeks before our show.

“It's just really heartwarming to be able to

put on such a fun economical day for families to come out in our community, and we all get together and raise some well-needed funds for the foundation. It’s a great feeling”

The organisation is dedicated to supporting children and families a ected by injury and trauma. The connection between the truck show organisers and the foundation runs deeper than a simple fundraising partnership.

The CEO Susie O’Neill from the KIDS Foundation gave a speech on what the charity is all about, and even some kids from the foundation made an appearance too.

The annual event once again proved why it has become one of the most anticipated

gatherings on the trucking calendar, drawing a colourful mix of machinery, industry supporters and local families together for a day that was about far more than horsepower and big rigs.

A total of 115 trucks were booked to roll in for the show, creating a spectacular display that stretched across the grounds.

“There were a number of standouts, from gleaming Kenworths to Freightliners, Macks and a handful of DAFs, there was no shortage of eye-catching equipment,” Tracey says.

While the trucks were undoubtedly the stars of the show, the event delivered much more than polished paint and roaring engines.

Carnival rides, market stalls and an auction kept crowds entertained throughout the day, helping attract what Tracey estimates were several thousands of visitors from across the region and beyond.

Like any major event, there were a few hurdles to overcome. Recent rain created some challenges on the lower oval, but organisers quickly adapted and kept things running smoothly.

Behind the scenes, the event was the result of months of hard work from Tracey, Janet Smith and their husbands, Steve Armstrong and Allan Smith. But Tracey is quick to point out that the success belonged to the entire community.

“We couldn’t have done it without the support of all our sponsors, volunteers on the day and the public who attended our event,” she says.

“It is such an amazing feeling to be able to raise $42, 128.48 on the day to donate to an important cause.”

As impressive as this year’s result was, there is little time to celebrate. Planning for next year is already underway, with organisers meeting to lock in dates and begin preparations for another huge community event.

In a world where good news can sometimes feel hard to nd, tens of thousands raised for children who need it most is a reminder of what can happen when the trucking industry comes together, positive change can happen.

A year a er its rst feature, Gerard Kovic’s K100E returns transformed with stunning retro styling, inspired by his dad’s truck

Gerard Kovic’s K100E, stunningly transformed

The last time we spoke to Gerard Kovic, he told us about his stunning 1992 K100E named, the ‘Orange One’.

At the time, the truck had faced major rust issues and received a little x up. Bolts were replaced, the cab was re tted and di erentsized second hand tanks and brackets were obtained. Then the chassis and overall components were washed and prepared for painting.

It wasn’t a full restoration, but Gerard did what was needed for a roadworthy certi cate.

Almost a year later, and it’s a whole new truck.

Last year, Gerard told Deals on Wheels: “We plan to paint the cab the same as my dad’s ‘74 cabover. By the time this story goes to print, the cabin will be stripped down and will be in the process of being prepared for its new silver and orange look.”

And now, it’s o cially complete.

By the time the K100E made its public debut, it had undergone a stunning transformation, that even Gerard can’t help but admire.

“It’s had all the trim taken out and redone, it’s got an extra stack, an extra air cleaner, and had a big polish up, a full repaint, and it was lined and scrolled,” Gerard says.

“Once we got the truck out and about a er Hauling the Hume in 2025, I managed to secure a spot in a panel shop under panel and paint work.

“The truck was stripped down, and the trim and windows were removed in order to gain access to di erent components of the truck.”

The rear cab wings were removed to make room for an additional exhaust and air intake system to be tted. Head light panels were bre-glassed up to accommodate square headlights - as the K100E was introduced in 1987.

Gerard says new grab handles were made from scratch to give it that extra edge, and then the doors were removed and stripped down with new stainless steel hinges tted.

“New door locks, handles, strikers, glass and window regulators were replaced, and the doors were rewired with new mirrors and lights,” he says.

Before Gerard got stuck into the K100E – there was certainly plenty of work to be done!

Slowly, slowly, it started coming together

At this point, it was shaping up nicely for the truck shows

“New Bailey channel and door seal rubbers were tted, and the cab had some items paint stripped, sand blasted, primed, washed and prepped.

The lights were put in, the paint is done, and the truck looks spectacular

“A silver, orange and black paint was applied with the stripes to replicate dad’s old ‘74 model cabover back in the late 80’s early 90’s, and once the K100E was ready for travel, I had it oated back home ready for the t up; all new windscreens, roof lights, air horns, headlights blinkers, aerials, load lights were done.

“The truck was then sent to Daniel Showman Signs where he worked his magic in lining and scrolling the cab just as it was in the old photos I gave him to replicate that old school look.”

Once the rig was back in the yard, new mu ers, heat shields, brackets and clamps were tted with 6” Aussie curved stacks and cobra type air intake caps.

A visit from ‘Cummins eld service’ got the N14 running right again.

‘Insane Shine’ then worked their magic with all the aluminium and stainless polished up to give the K100E that classic show-room look.

The rig was stripped down in August 2025, and it only took about three to four months to get it back on the road.

“This was a side project for me,” Gerard says. “I still have a full time job, this is just a hobby I enjoy.”

Gerard says there’s not a lot of 92 model E trucks around.

“It’s a model of a truck that seems to be few and far between,” he says.

“To make it a little di erent we’ve put square headlights on it, and we've brought it back to more of an ‘88 look, rather than a ‘92 looking truck – we’ve just jazzed it up.”

“It’s now got two stacks and two air clippers on it, and an old school paint job to sort of set it o .”

“It’s now about 95 per cent nished. There are still some nishing touches that need to be done.”

He says the hardest part about xing this truck up again wasn’t the restoration itself, it was nding somebody to take on the paint and panel work.

“I put the truck out there for quotes, and people weren't really interested in painting it,” he says.

“Then I got a hold of a bloke in Sydney, who was like ‘sure mate, bring it down, we'll do it,’ and he and his crew have done a wonderful job.

“They sandblasted and paint stripped it, repaired it here and there, and then got it fully painted, undercoated, and blocked back.

“A lot of paint shops don't do that, they usually just scu it back, but he actually primed it and blocked it back and then painted it all silver.

“Then we worked out where to put the lines, and we painted the black, and then the orange, and then it got clear coated.”

The K100E made its debut at the 2026 Truck Fest in Sydney and went on display in the wool shed for a few days before Gerard got it back up to Newcastle for the interior trim t out and prepped it ready for a trip to Melbourne for the Crawling the Hume run out from Wallan to Albury.

“I was very lucky, I got Pride in Place, so there was a whole heap of historical trucks in that shed at that particular time, so it got quite the stand of glory.

“Everyone was staring at it and asking, ‘is this the same truck?’ Yeah, it’s the same truck,” he laughs.

Not content with being preoccupied with only one restoration project, Gerard also

recently rescued his father’s old 1981 Kenworth cabover from heading to the scrap yard.

Someone put it up on Gumtree, and Gerard’s brother found it, only to soon realise it was his dad's truck, so they bought it back.

“It’s in a million pieces at the moment, so it'll come back together one day, back to exactly how it was in the 80s,” he says.

He’s also got a trailer, which will go behind the Orange One.

“The trailer needs to be painted orange and silver, to match the truck of course, and then I've still got my old ‘86 cabover Kenworth in my backyard, which I'll take to Clarendon this year, which is an ex-Roccisano truck,” he says.

“So, we'll paint it up back to its original livery, but it's a long way o .

“The cabin’s o , we got the motor out and gearbox out. I've got it all in pieces at the moment. It's spread out all around the place, but only until I can nd somewhere to do it.

“That's my biggest thing right now. I just don't have anywhere to do it.”

Can’t get more golden oldie than this!

Vintage chrome, restored pieces and preserved machines that each possess decades worth of stories and history will once again come to life when the Golden Oldies Truck Show rolls into town this year.

But this isn’t just another event, this 2026 show marks a major milestone – the club’s 20th anniversary – and it’s shaping up to be a big one on August 1 and 2 at the Dubbo Showgrounds from 8:30am to 5pm.

“We’re hoping for a really good roll up,” Golden Oldies Truck Club president Jon Mancer says.

“This is a big milestone for us, so we’re hoping to see between six to 7,000 people turn up.”

While trucks remain the heart and soul of the event, visitors can expect far more than rows of classic rigs.

The weekend has grown into a festival of machinery, motoring history and community spirit, attracting thousands of spectators and exhibitors from across New South Wales and beyond.

One of the major drawcards will once again be the tractor pull, which has quickly become a crowd favourite.

“We’ll have two tractor pull sleds operating and a bus muster as well,” Jon says.

“There were about 50 buses onsite last time, plus they’ll be cars, motorbikes, the quilt show, a model display – we’ve got a bit everything.”

Adding to the spectacle of the bus muster, enthusiasts will be treated to an impressive lineup ranging from classic Bedfords and Dennings through to Silver Eagles and Clipper Club favourites.

Whether you’re a lifelong transport enthusiast or simply looking for a family day out, there’s no shortage of attractions.

Of course, the trucks will still command plenty of attention. More than 200 vehicles rolled through the gates at the previous event, and organisers are hoping for another impressive turnout this year.

“We're open to historical vehicles and new ones as well,” Jon says.

There will be anything from old Bedfords, Internationals to Atkinsons, Kenworths, Macks, you name it, it’ll be there.

For many visitors however, the meaning of the day is rooted in community.

The club itself has only a handful of local members, yet those members continue to punch well above their weight when it comes to fundraising and giving back.

“In 2024 we gave away nearly $15,000 back to the community,” Jon says. “Our small club only has about 12 active, local members. We have more members, but they're scattered far and wide across New South Wales, although sadly they are ageing out.”

It’s a remarkable achievement for a club run by volunteers, many of whom have been involved for decades.

As the Golden Oldies Truck Show prepares to celebrate 20 years, the focus remains exactly where it started – preserving transport history, bringing people together and supporting the communities that keep regional Australia moving.

For one weekend, the old workhorses will take centre stage once again. And judging by the lineup already taking shape, they’ll have plenty of stories le to tell.

Fuel prices and the challenges of the transport world were o the table on Sunday, June 7 as thousands turned out for the 29th Alexandra Truck Show

Truck shows come in many shapes and sizes.

In Victoria, one of the biggest turnouts every year is to be found at the small country town of Alexandra where the King’s Birthday weekend is all about trucks and their drivers.

The town is also home to the Victorian Truck Drivers’ Memorial.

On the Saturday of King’s Birthday weekend, the team behind the Victorian Truck Drivers Memorial host a ceremony to recognise the service of truck drivers who have died doing their job or a er a lifetime of work in the industry.

This year about 350 families attended this event to see 24 new names placed on the wall,

joining the other 217 plaques already in place (see full list on opposite page).

VTDM vice president Bette PhillipsCampbell says the memorial event is an opportunity for the families to remember their loved ones, to meet others who have faced similar circumstances, and to be a part of a supportive community helping each other through their grief.

Bette says the ceremony itself is only one part of the VTDM’s work for the year, with volunteers assisting families with advocacy and support as needed.

Applications for plaques to be fitted to the wall in time for the 2027 ceremony will be taken until March 1, 2027. See vdtm.asn.au.

On Sunday, it’s all about the trucks.

This year about 295 trucks of all shapes and sizes rolled into Alexandra and parked up along the main street to entertain a crowd that was estimated by the organisers to be more than 15,000 people.

The trucks were just part of the show, which also includes a wood chopping competition, a side show alley of sorts for the children, a street full of cool utes and hot rods, and a variety of charity food stalls, local product showcases, and trucking-related products and paraphernalia.

As a third time attendee at Alexandra, this was the biggest event I’ve seen so far.

While the weather was still crisp, something that is a given for Alexandra at this time of the year, the rain stayed away which made for a more pleasant experience and could go some way to explain the stronger crowds.

Having said that though, the torrid time the town has had as it recovers from bush res that came to its doorstep in early in 2026 could also have driven locals to take the opportunity to get out of the house and catch up with their mates.

Whatever it was that brought the crowds out, it certainly added to the carnival atmosphere with stall holders and local Alexandra businesses doing a brisk trade all day.

Wandering the streets to check out the trucks and the stalls, it was easy to clock up well over the 10,000 steps health nuts have led us to believe is optimal for ongoing tness. The pace of the exercise would be questionable though – every polished beauty deserved attention, requiring a stop, a look, a photo and a chat, before moving on to the next one.

Saturday saw 24 new names added to the Memorial Wall in a moving ceremony attended by families of those lost.

Then there was the mobile stage just by the Corner Hotel on Grant St which was at out with live music from Kane Vincent and Ricki Wood, followed by a major fundraising ra e and the announcement of the trophy winners for the utes, rods, and trucks.

And a er about 3pm in the a ernoon at Alexandra you nd yourself standing still for a while.

It is one of the highlights of this show as the punters cheer from the balconies of the two country pubs closest to the stage, and the truckies, their families and truck fans gather around to see who will be bringing home a trophy for the mantlepiece.

The day’s capped o with a choir of airhorns as the trucks parked three abreast up the length of Grant St roll out, single le, in a truck parade of sorts, then turn and head east on the Goulburn Highway, or west on Maroondah Highway, all to the cheers of the crowds.

The Truck of the Show this year went to G & D Inverno Transport for their 2024 Kenworth T404 SAR Legend.

Accepting the award on behalf of the family, Chris Inverno, said his dad, Peppi Inverno, drives the truck to Adelaide, Sydney and, sometimes, Brisbane, carting Class A dangerous goods.

“Just really proud of my brother, his girlfriend, Dad, for keeping it clean, and my Mum too, who’s at home,” he said.

It’s the second year in a row the Inverno’s have taken home the top gong, although last year it was for a di erent truck from their eet.

As the 29th Alexandra Truck Show rolled to an end, the excitement was already starting to build for the milestone 30th anniversary event in 2027 where the organisers are already promising to bring even more excitement to town as the trucking community gets set to celebrate three decades of gatherings.

MBringing along the food truck idea means the truck meet becomes a much more social event and a great experience for the entire family

other nature is a malicious prankster I swear. For over a year I have been keen to get to one of the increasingly popular Drive 4 Depression Truck Meet, and in the rst weekend in May everything nally aligned.

It was a weekend where I was not out on the road. It was a weekend where all of my at home obligations had been meet, and it was a weekend where I had found a servo in Ipswich with diesel at $2.31 a litre, so the hour long drive over to The Mower Supastore in Brendale wouldn’t bankrupt me.

And then Mother Nature decided what the day truly needed was a continuous

contribution of Anti-shine. I was nally on hand to attend one of the expanding Drive 4 Depression Truck Meets, an event that has been packing out the carpark of The Mower Supastore with upwards of 50-odd trucks on occasion, and mother nature decided to dissuade dozens of regular attendees with wet weather.

Fear not though, as the old saying goes. ‘It’s not how big it is that counts, it’s what you do with it’ and I found the force and feeling behind the Drive 4 Depression Truck Meet was just as strong, even with a roll call of only half its regular numbers.

is the brainchild of Chris Doosey and his right-hand lady Bec Munro. They are kind of like the Charity Trucking’s version of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, where Chris is Jobs, getting all the facetime and credit and Bec is Wozniak, doing all the work and pulling it all together.

It all began a couple of years ago a er Chris had been part of the ever-popular Brisbane Convoy for Kids. “I did about eight months with Convoy and I loved it, it was something about the charity and giving back, I wanted to do more” Chris says.

While Chris runs Brisbane’s largest Mower Store, trucking has been in his blood for a lot longer.

“I’ve had trucks for 29 years; it’s in my blood and now it’s a passion. I am a bit biased though, I think I have some pretty cool trucks now,” he says.

It’s that lifetime indoctrination into the transport world that paired the two ideals

together. Trucking and the support and bene t of charity events.

“I’m no di erent to anyone else, I went through some pretty dark times like some guys have and I wanted to do something to try and help,” Chris says.

“It was just one of those realisations I had when I was with some friends where you think okay, it’s time for guys to talk, and I wanted to encourage that.”

visible topic to discuss, Chris also noticed that Drive 4 Depression needs to broaden its scope, and part of that is because of his righthand lady, Bec Munro.

Regular attendees and supporters of the Drive 4 Depression Truck Meets are Danny and Cindy Hinds, a couple that run their own truck, the stunning T909 behind them and are huge advocates of getting people talking together

Bec is the wife of a truck driver, Beej Munro. She is as dedicated to the industry as her husband, assisting in multiple transport events as well as spending nearly as much time as her hubby cleaning his company truck - with most adding in that she does a better job in half the time… But I’m not starting any controversy there.

The point is, Bec appreciates the time and e ort that drivers put in on the road and the e ects it has on them, their families and their wider circle of contacts. That larger more holistic approach is why Drive 4 Depression was formed and what drives their focus.

“It isn’t just about the drivers and their mental health, it’s about the wives and partners, the kids and families. Everybody that is a ected by the industry,” Chris says.

“When we’re o on the road it’s the wives and partners that are keeping the families together. They are the ones keeping the households running. And when things go wrong, they are the ones su ering.”

In 2025, Drive 4 Depression was listed as an o cial charity organisation and Chris and Bec began hosting regular Truck Meets.

“The idea is that people just come along and mingle. It isn’t a truck show,” Chris says.

While also knowing full well that people are prepping for the meets like they are a truck show.

“We just want people to come along and talk to each other, get families talking to other families, so people know that they’re not alone.”

From a handful of trucks at the rst event, of which half of them were Chris’, to packing out the carpark at the Brendale Supastore, the Drive 4 Depression Truck Meets has gathered quite the following.

From Bec whipping up the road to grab some sangers to throw on the Mower Supastore BBQ, to multiple food trucks vying for limited spots in the carpark. Each Meet has grown support for the cause.

As people learn of the motivation behind these truck meets, more and more are keen to come along. To appreciate the trucks and just to ‘chew the fat’. Which is exactly what Chris was hoping for.

“Right from day one we have had a lot of great support, we’ve had numerous food vans o ering to come along and support, we’ve had the Desert Dog team bring along their products since the rst one meet, Ray from Ray Lawrence Photography is always out catching the trucks as they roll in, and people love seeing their roadside shots go up on our socials,” Chris says.

turn up for every event. Even in weather like this - in fact, the weather was worse at the previous show, and we still had the carpark full.”

So, while it wasn’t the worst weather for my inaugural attendance, I think it was the fact it turned to custard before the show, coating the roads with a deep dish of anti-shine and ensuring plenty of road spray for those coming from the southside, that played a part in participation levels.

It did a ect the numbers, but it didn’t a ect the atmosphere. The ipside was that I was able to get a park a lot closer to the Chicken Wings food Van, so we’ll look at the positives.

I spent a fair bit of time wandering amongst the attendees and was blown away by the family involvement. Kids running around hyped up on sugar and stainless. Couples enjoying quality time together. O en with a cleaning rag bonding them together.

There were quite a few ‘trucking families’ that had chosen to leave their big rigs home, away from the anti-shine still caked on the roads, but they happily jumped in their cars to come down and just enjoy the environment.

There were enough characters on hand to ll the carpark with laughs and a jovial atmosphere, and enough trucks on hand to ensure plenty of photo opportunities for myself and the abundance of truck spotters gracing the Brendale location.

The goal for the Drive 4 Depression organisation is far from restricted. Chris and Bec want to bring mental health, and in particular talking about our own mental health into a more acceptable and encouraged foray. It is an admirable goal although not an easy one.

The entrenched silent approach is a doctrine many of us have grown up with. When we live in a world where we all tend to believe that our mates, our neighbours, even our family all ‘have their s#@t together’, it’s only us that don’t.

Normalising mental health discussions can be di cult. That’s why bringing truck drivers together with regular truck meets, regular chin wags, can only lead to easier conversations.

Getting trucking families together to spend time with each other, to relate to other trucking families, can only lead to bigger and stronger support networks. What started as a quick 10 minute interview to avoid a bit of rain turned into an hour-long chat with Chris and Bec and an unwavering admiration for the drive and direction they are taking.

Without giving anything away, they have some fantastic plans for future events and ideas to help ful ll the Ethos behind Drive 4 Depression, and I for one, can’t wait to attend more and see how this all rolls out. Let’s just ask mother nature to take the night o though.

May days slow for sales

The May sales results for trucks and heavy commercial vans, as reported by the Truck Industry Council’s T-Mark database, show a 13.2 per cent drop in combined total sales for the year to date, as at May 31, 2026, as compared to May 31, 2025.

In real terms, this year’s total YTD sales are 15,354 vehicles, compared to 17,694 vehicles sold YTD to May 31, 2025.

The current state of the market reflects a drop of nearly 25 per cent from the record levels of sales achieved in 2024, where by May that year 20,237 trucks had changed hands.

Across the categories for the year to date, to May 31, 2026, compared to year to date to May 31, 2025, heavy duty truck sales are down 10.9 per cent, medium duty trucks down 37 per cent and light duty trucks down 9.65 per cent.

Heavy duty

Sales of the heaviest trucks hit 1,093 for May 2026, down about 80 trucks on the May 2025 result of 1,172 trucks sold.

For the year to date 5,103 heavy trucks have changed hands, a

big drop from the May 2025 sales result of 5,662.

Across the brands, on a YTD basis, Kenworth (1,013) retains the top spot, followed by Volvo (836), Isuzu (785), Scania (438), DAF (307), Fuso (298), Mercedes-Benz (288), Hino (271), UD Trucks (259), MACK (241), Iveco (116), Freightliner (80), MAN (76), Western Star (60) and Dennis Eagle (35).

Medium duty

Medium duty truck sales have taken the biggest hit to sales volumes of any of the categories so far in 2026.

The 1,848 trucks sold, YTD, to May 31, 2026 falls more than 1,000 trucks behind the 2,934 medium duty trucks sold in the first five months of 2025.

The big three brands in this category, Isuzu, Hino and Fuso, have all taken a hit in 2026, although supply challenges hurt Hino the most with its 297 medium duty trucks sold to the end of May falling well short of the 979 trucks it sold for the same time in 2025.

The good news for Hino fans is supply is returning to normal and there’s a comeback on the way.

Overall, the top 10 for YTD sales to the end of May in 2026 were: Isuzu (1,017), Fuso (320), Hino (297), Iveco (66), Hyundai (39), Mercedes-Benz (32), Volvo (27), MAN (17), DAF (14 and Foton (9).

Light duty

What a di erence a year makes when it comes to the light duty category.

At the end of May 2025, Isuzu held 53.1 per cent market share in the light duty category, ahead of Fuso (15.2 per cent) and Iveco (7 per cent).

At the end of May 2026, Isuzu recorded 38.1 per cent market share, followed by Hino (24.5 per cent) and Fuso (16.4 per cent).

Overall, 4,418 light duty trucks have been sold in the first five months of 2026, compared to 4,890 for the first five months of 2025.

The top 10 table for YTD truck sales in this category is: Isuzu (1,684), Hino (1,081), Fuso (723), Fiat (292), Iveco (267), Mercedes-Benz (137), LDV (64), Hyundai (54), Renault (14), and Ford (10).

Chinese forkli manufacturer Hangcha Group has reached an important milestone in its long-term commitment to the Australian market

Hangcha Equipment Rental Australia Pty Ltd has o cially opened in Sydney, representing the next step in its local development.

The new 2,100-square-metre warehousing facility is set to strengthen the company’s national service network, following the establishment of Hangcha Group’s Australian company in Melbourne in 2022.

The facility will help deliver a range of services, including equipment sales, short and long-term rentals, a ersales support, and spare parts supply. This will ensure stronger operational support, faster response times, and lasting customer partnerships, the company says.

Senior company gures, along with valued partners and industry guests attended the opening ceremony in Sydney to celebrate the milestone.

During the celebration, Hangcha Equipment Rental Australia deputy general manager Ada Yuan outlined three key focus areas to drive the company’s next phase of growth.

The rst being to strengthen fundamentals by enhancing local parts availability and accelerating service response capabilities.

The second key focus area is to

deepen company partnerships by empowering dealers and partners through technical training, market development support, and collaborative growth initiatives.

The last key focus area is to advance market position by expanding the company’s presence in premium

segments, while growing global key account partnerships to elevate Hangcha’s brand in uence across Australia.
