Cornwill Transport's 2022 Kenworth Legend SAR was named Champion of Champions in Brisbane. Image: Prime Creative Media
to Issue 519 of your Deals on Wheels Magazine
Wow! What a week. I’m writing this note just days after arriving back home from the Brisbane Truck Show.
As a first-time visitor to the show, and a relative newcomer to all things trucks, it was certainly an eye-opening experience.
Aside from the sheer variety of equipment and accessories involved in the transport world, the talent and passion of all involved, exhibitors and audience, was a sight to behold.
The Truck Show is at the heart of Truck Week, which included the Heritage Truck Show at Rocklea Showgrounds over the weekend (look out for a wrap up and plenty of pictures from that show in Issue 520). It also featured a new activation this year in the form of a national Show N Shine competition hosted in Little
Stanley St as part of Truck Week.
The street hosted 28 winning trucks from regional truck shows around Australia in one big line. Each truck had its own descriptive stand, which included a QR code for visitors to use to register their vote for a People’s Choice Award. Judges drawn from the transport world were also on hand, given the tough task of picking a National Champion truck and two runners-up from a premium field of contenders.
There was nothing but good vibes and cheers as Cornwill Transport’s 2022 Kenworth Legend SAR — “Dynamite” — took out the Champion of Champions Award, followed by Andrew Derham’s 1989 Mack Value-Liner — “Staying Alive" — in second place and Trent Schaeffer’s tri-drive Kenworth K200 — “Summer Jam” — in third. As for the People’s Choice, the everpopular “Karma” truck, Auswide Transport Solution’s stunning black 2021 Kenworth T909, with its grim reaper inspired artwork, took home the silverware.
Congratulations to all involved in the event. Keep an eye on dealsonwheels.com.au and our social pages for more pictures and stories in the weeks to come.
One of the highlights of this year’s Brisbane Truck Show was the announcement of the winner of the Truck of the Year Australasia award
After much anticipation and build up, the Volvo FH16 780 has been crowned the Truck of the Year Australasia for 2025.
The winner was announced at the 2025 Brisbane Truck Show, presented to the Volvo Trucks team by panel members PowerTorque technical editor Tim Giles and New Zealand Trucking editorial director Dave McCoid.
To be considered for Truck of the Year Australasia, a truck had to be available for sale in both New Zealand and Australia before December 31, 2024.
The 780hp FH16 became available to order in Australia in June 2024, and has already proven its credentials as the most powerful truck on Australian roads.
With an aim of efficiency and a cleaner operation, the engine features a new fuel injection system, low friction cylinder liners as well as wave top pistons to ensure optimised combustion.
Married to the latest iteration of the I-shift technology the electronic integration between the transmission and engine is such that its gear changes have been described as “imperceptible and very quick”.
On the safety front, the Volvo Pilot Assist offered as part of the Volvo Dynamic Steering Package adds another level of driver safety, using a windscreen mounted camera and advanced technology linked to the steering wheel to help keep the truck in the perfect position on the road.
Active Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Volvo’s Camera
Monitoring System are further safety measures built into the truck, making the most of available technology to provide drivers with clear views all around their vehicle.
Now in its third year, the Truck of the Year Australasia (ToYA) Award was launched in 2023 as an adjunct to the International Truck of the Year Award that has operated in Europe since 1976.
The first accolade went to the Kenworth K220 (2023), which was also announced at the Brisbane Truck Show that same year, with the Western Star X Series picking up the gong the following year.
The other finalists were the Mercedes-Benz eActros, FAW JT6 550, and the Scania 500P Super.

When the hunt for a gift becomes a story worth telling
Words & Images:
Warren Aitken
He may look calm and relaxed, well actually he is. This is the part of Mark's workshop where his technical skills shine. Designing, redesigning and problem solving
Sometimes you never know where a story is going to come from.
Most of the time I do the leg work and go hunting for articles, I often get leads passed to me on interesting people or cool trucks and just occasionally I stumble across a noteworthy opportunity by pure happenstance.
What you are reading here is not any of those, in fact this was never meant to be a story. What all of this started out as was me looking for a cool wedding present for my fiancée, but during the process of preparing my epic wedding present I discovered a whole community of amazingly talented truck fanatics with incredible skill and immeasurable patience.
I am going to focus on the man that made my wife happier than me on our wedding day. Wait, that could be interpreted wrong, I am going to focus on the man whose skills made my wife happiest on our wedding day. Nope, that doesn’t sound much better. I am going to focus on Mark Wikaira, the man who designed and constructed a one-of-a-kind Drake model for me to give to my beautiful
fiancée on our wedding day.
My pathway to the young kiwi dad’s Melbourne workshop began way back in the Covid era. Don’t worry I won’t drag this out, I’ll stick to the cliff notes, but you do need to know a bit. When I met the amazing Michelle Williams, now Aitken, she was working in insurance. That role had little to do with trucks, until she got a job with the country’s leading transport insurance specialist, NTI. Working for a company passionate about all things transport, and living with my overabundance of trucking fanaticism, it naturally started seeping into her life and before you knew it, she’s shooting alongside me, joining me at shows and most importantly stealing my Drake Model Collection for her work desk.
Anyone who has purchased a Drake Collectible knows very well about the Pringles Effect — ‘Once you pop, you just can’t stop’ and my lovely lady was no exception. Her NTI desk was becoming a Mecca for all things Drake. She even ended higher up Bruce’s Christmas card list than I ever got.
Jump to March last year and Michelle was
The smile rarely escapes Mark's face when he is into a project. His love of trucks and love of building models has found a happy home in his Melbourne workshop
There are easier ways to design the detailed parts of Mark's build, but easy isn’t Mark's first choice. Even the spider wheels get broken down into multiple tiny parts, just to ensure they are accurate
The magical manufacturing plant. I don’t understand how a 3D printer works, but it does
Mark's custom spray booth allows him to apply a professional spray to everything from the 3D parts to the sanded back Drakes themselves
sympathetic enough to agree to my marriage proposal. It may have been the alcohol intake, but I held her to the yes. To lock in my spot as No. 1 hubby I went and visited Bruce, Dianne and Mike down at Drake Collectibles to see if they had any really cool, hard-to-find models that would be great for a wedding day present.
Seeing as everything on the Drake Collectibles shelves classifies as really cool and often hard to find it was a difficult choice.
Until Bruce showed me a special edition he had in the office. A custom modified Drake Collectible. This was an entirely new concept to me and opened me up to creating something really special for my beloved.
Bruce put me in touch with another model maestro, Len Fletcher who heard out my idea
and he steered me towards Melbourne and the home of Mark Wikaira.
At this stage, this project still wasn’t registering as a story option. I was thinking about a couple of printed stickers on the side, with our wedding date and if possible, a picture of the two of us. Sure, it’s not fancy wedding jewellery, but I knew it would still win me brownie points. The idea of this becoming a story started to germinate when I had a phone call with Mark to discuss the project. He was bouncing around ideas that involved almost rebuilding a brand-new model. Spider rims, extra fuel tanks, recolour the chassis, different bull bars, the options he was throwing out, it was unbelievable.
When I questioned him about how he did all these things and where he learnt it all, he quite simply said: “I’ve just taught myself. With help from a whole heap of online model groups and other model makers.”
When I asked if he works in the diecast industry, he informed me: “Nah mate, I work in railways signals. As a supervisor, running projects, doing maintenance. That kind of thing.”
Ok, now we have a story. A railway worker who spends his time pulling apart already perfect diecast models and customising client specific single orders. With a 3D printer, a miniature spray-painting booth and the attention to detail required to assemble threepiece 1/50 scale spider rims and hubs. Yes, there must be a story there.
When I went and visited Mark, I was blown
away by the level of dedication to what he attests is just a hobby.
The Te Awamutu born Kiwi grew up around trucks and has always enjoyed making models.
“As a kid I was always building the plastic model kits, loved doing those,” he states.
“I did think I’d end up in a truck, but I shifted over here at 18 and ended up getting a trade with Queensland Rail.”
That job led to plenty of upskilling and enough work that the truck driving idea never eventuated however the model building was still a huge part of Mark’s downtime.
“I think doing the trade work, the skills and patience that came with that transferred over to the model stuff,” Mark says.
By the time Mark’s wife bought him his first Drake Collectible he had all but used up the plastic kit options and Mark started looking at modifying a Drake collectible Kenworth.
“Everyone keeps saying to Drake, you should make this one, or make that one, but the money involved in doing different trucks means it’s not as easy as that for Bruce.
“So, that’s why I decided to start doing small modifications. Taking the stock models and turning them into custom ones. Bruce has been very supportive of guys like me that are able to customise them and start making our own parts, I’ve even done one for him.”
“The second Drake I bought was a black 90h
and I wanted to change it to three tanks rather than the two on the box.
“So, I started investigating how to pull them apart, there are a heap of online groups where you can learn all that stuff.
“Then I bought a 3D printer and taught myself Fushion360 and creating my own CADs. I had thought it would be as easy as downloading the designs online, but it wasn’t I had to do it all myself.”
Once he had some success designing and printing his own tanks and other parts the world started to open up as far as ideas went.
More tools were added to Mark’s workshop
Mark has almost as many work desks as he has custom models strewn throughout his Melbourne house
It’s not just the Drake Models in Mark's collection. The stunning Iconic Series trucks have also supplied projects for the model maestro
to ensure when he was making modifications they were as close to the Drake Quality as you could get. In no time at all Mark was tackling full projects.
“I’d been doing small modifications and stickering, but the first one I fully pulled apart and re-did was the DRT one.
“My printer is set at 0.2mm layers, just to avoid any lines. So, it can take about 4hrs to print a fuel tank.”
It was amazing to look around Mark’s workshop which resembled an old school toymaker's lair. With a production line from tear down, to finishing school.
However, it isn’t just replicating on road rigs. Mark’s skills and attention to detail in creating ideas is also impressive.
Mark's Kiwi affiliations shine through with some of his NZ modifications as well. Like this JD Hickman Legend and matching B-double set
Who needs fancy flowers or perfume. You know you have the perfect woman when a one-of-akind custom Drake model is her ultimate wedding gift. Mark's design skills and attention to detail is evident everywhere on this diecast collectible
“I designed all the decals from photos and had a guy in Brisbane print them. Now I can do my own. I also stripped the cab back and resprayed that in the DRT Blue.
"The Drake Fat Cabs are on a longer chassis with heavy haul diffs, so I had to mount the cab onto a highway chassis. I had to 3D print new guards as well."
After that first one started to leak out online, requests for Mark services started to skyrocket.
When photos come out of the SRV trucks that Mark created, B-double sets and all, he was getting plenty of requests.
“It has been difficult because they do take a while. Especially as I am still working and have a family, but I love doing it. I get lots of offers for the trucks, some I do for people others I just do because I love the trucks. Like the SRV units.”
When he says it takes a while, he means the quality takes time.
When I gave him, what I thought was a simple request he took it and ran. Customising the truck with separate ‘laser cut’ wings down each side. Nikon on mine, along with the Kiwi flag and a signpost displaying the distance to my hometown. On the other side of the truck the sleeper wings show Canon and it’s the Australian flag and signpost to Michelle’s hometown. The B-double set, well you can see for yourself how personalised he made the entire unit. It went above and beyond what I envisioned and with such skill and detail.
As a kid who would try and assemble my Italeri trucks in less time than it takes to read the instructions, I can’t help but admire the work of folks like Mark. My models rarely ended up resembling the front cover images, yet guys like Mark are replicating some of the coolest gear on the road, down to the coloured spider hubs.
As I mentioned, this whole undertaking was not intended to give me a story to share. I was just happy to have an amazing woman who gets excited by a model truck on her wedding day. However, once I started to learn about the capabilities of model modifiers like Mark, and the passion and dedication they have for their craft. I just had to share. And before you ask, yes, he is taking orders, but you’ll need to wait. I’ve got my list in already. Well, I should say, Michelle has her orders in.

Attendance records were smashed at the 2025 Brisbane Truck Show with 54,790 people rolling through the doors over the four-day event.
The huge show featured more than 35,000 square metres of exhibition space, the only expo on the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre’s calendar that fills all three levels in total takeover of the venue.
HVIA CEO Todd Hacking, whose association is the show organiser, says the truck show is the biggest industry event in the country.
“What started back in 1968 as an event to connect members with their customers has become much more than that — a week-long festival of all things trucking,” he says.
“Amazingly, it now ranks as Australia’s largest industry exhibition and there are so many other events that run alongside the Truck Show that make it a compelling opportunity for everyone to get together in Brisbane every two years — as evidenced by this year’s eye-popping attendance”.
The four-day event was blessed with clear skies for the majority of the days it was held and featured new additions including the popular Show N Shine competition held on Grey St, featuring 28 stunning trucks drawn from the winners lists of eight regional truck shows all around Australia.
The show was an opportunity for truck manufacturers to pull back the curtains on their new offerings too.
For the Kenworth lovers, PACCAR Australia revealed its new generation of wide cab models, the T320, T420, T620 and T620SAR.
The T420SAR features the PACCAR MX-13
engine, while the T620 and T620SAR are powered by the Cummins X15 Euro 6, rated to 625hp.
Scania returned to the show circle for the first time since 2019, showing off its big banger V8 770 S model prime mover fitted with a massive cab. It’s 16.4 litre engine produces 770 hp.
The Daimler stand was a sea of gleaming white trucks on a stylish grey backdrop, mixing both diesel and electric power. The new ProCabin Actros, which is not on sale until later this year in Australia and New Zealand, was one of the highlights of the collection, attracting plenty of audience attention.
For Isuzu, with its first complete set of new model trucks in 17 years, the show was a chance to showcase the new look, the
safety features and the base from which the company will offer more than 150 variations of model set-ups across the light, medium and heavy truck categories.
Iveco brought glam to town with a special Metallica truck catching the eye on its stand –an S-Way model set up to tow some of the gear needed to take the heavy metal band on tour here later this year.
Hyundai showed off its XCIENT fuel cell truck, and a newcomer DFAC light to medium truck, produced in China, was presented to the market for the first time by KRW Motor Group.
There were also stunning displays from trailer manufacturers and a vast array of suppliers to the truck industry offering everything from telematics, to bullbars, fuel, oil, lights, and branded merchandise.
New truck sales continued a downward trend in April
The release of the Truck Industry Council’s official T-Mark truck sales data for the Australian market, released on Friday, shows 3,416 heavy vehicles were sold in April 2025, down 709 sales compared to April 2024’s sales results.
Of the sales made by the truck brands to the end of April 2025, across all categories, Isuzu has won 28.3 per cent of the market (3,893 sales), followed by Hino with 9.4 per cent (1,291), Fuso with 7.6 per cent, (1.050), Kenworth with 7.5 per cent (1,037), Volvo with 5.5 per cent (760) and Iveco with 3 per cent (410).
Truck Industry Council CEO Tony McMullan says a number of factors have contributed to the declining demand seen in the market so far this year.
“The April sales numbers in combination with the first quarter
Isuzu has continued its reign as Australia's biggest selling truck maker in April. Image: Isuzu Australia
2025 sales show that the heavy truck and van market is cooling this year,” McMullan says.
“However, at the end of April, overall heavy vehicle sales were the third best on record, only bettered by the record sales years of 2023 and 2024.
“Further, historically new heavy vehicle sales have always slowed in the runup to a federal election, with businesses potentially waiting to witness the market reaction to the election result before committing to fleet replacements and/or business expansion.
“With the election result now known and with the Labor government returned, Australian businesses have a reasonable insight into the economic environment for the next three years. With that clarity, it will be interesting to watch the Australian economy and business confidence over the next few months.
“Of course, the happenings in the USA economy and the possibility of a US recession, may have the potential to weaken Australian business confidence in the coming months.
“We are in somewhat unchartered economic times globally and the effects on the Australian economy are equally unknown.
“It is difficult to predict how new Australian truck sales will perform for the rest of 2025. However, if we keep tracking at, or above, the third best yearly sales result, 2025 may work out better than some commentators would have you believe.”
Coming back to the results, April 2025 has recorded smaller sales volumes in all of the categories monitored in the T-Mark data, commercial vans, heavy, medium and light duty trucks.
Heavy Duty sales were down a significant 28.4 per cent for the month, 440 less heavies delivered in April 2025 compared with April 2024.
In total 1,110 Heavy Duty trucks were sold in April. Year-to-date the Heavy segment is fairing a little better recording a total of 4,490 sales to the end of April, down 15.9 per cent (-848) over the same first four months of 2024.
The top 10 brands for sales volumes in April, in order, are: Kenworth (271), Isuzu (208), Volvo (183), Scania (70), Hino (69), Mercedes-Benz (56), Fuso (54), Mack (53), DAF (46), UD Trucks (36).
Sales in the Medium Duty segment have fallen away as the year has progressed.
In April the Medium Duty segment performed better than any other sector, though still down on April 2024 sales.
A total of exactly 600 Medium trucks were delivered, down
9 per cent (-59 trucks) over April 2024.
Year-to-date the Medium truck numbers show the segment trailing the same period last year by just 5.7 per cent, -136 trucks.
A total of 2,264 Medium Duty trucks have been sold so far in 2025.
The top 10 brands for sales volumes in April, in order, are: Isuzu (297), Hino (213), Fuso (65), Hyundai (10), Man (5), UD Trucks (4), Iveco (3), Mercedes-Benz (1), Volvo (1), DAF (1).
The Light end of the market, trucks and vans, was not immune to the downturn in sales.
The Light Truck segment took the biggest hit (trucks between 3,500 kg and 8,000 kg GVM). All up, 872 trucks were sold in April, down 25 per cent (-291 trucks) over April 2024.
Again, as seen across the other segments, year-to-date the Light Duty truck segment is tracking better than the April result showed. A total of 3,800 Light trucks have been sold thus far in 2025, down 12.2 per cent (-526 trucks) on this time last year.
The top 10 brands for sales volumes in April, in order, are: Isuzu (487), Fuso (123), Iveco (61), Fiat (59), Hino (58), Renault (41), Hyundai (13), Mercedes-Benz (12), Ford (8), LDV (7)..
With an engine you can hear miles away, the 1974 White was Allan Morrow’s childhood dream. Now he’s living that reality
Words: Tiane Gavillucci
Images: Allan Morrow
The old rig was the town treasure. Allan was sure Mick would keep this rig close to his heart
You could always hear it before you saw it.
Long before Allan Morrow got behind the wheel, he knew that sound by heart; the deep rattling growl of an 8V71 GM Detroit Diesel engine echoing down the road.
It was the kind of sound that made windows hum, and birds scatter from trees.
In Gladstone, everyone called it the ‘bird scarer’.
“I’ve admired this truck since my early childhood, back when she was the pride of the fleet pulling a bogie float,” he says.
“I always thought it was the coolest and best sounding truck in town. You could hear that engine coming for miles! Everyone in town knew that truck.”
The 1974 White 9000 belonged to Mick Blomfield of Blomfield Excavations, a name known in the Gladstone area for 50 years.
Allan had admired this truck from a distance for year, and by a twist of fate, he would finally get the chance to drive it.
After running his own earthmoving business for 20 years, Allan shut up shop in 2018 and took a job working for Mick himself.
“Mick offered me a job, and by that time, the old White had been semi-retired to the quarry water cart. I then got paid to drive the truck I’d loved all these years,” he says.
“For the past eight years I’ve been working on Mick to buy the truck from him, but anyone that knows him, knows he doesn’t sell anything.”
When Mick finally announced he was retiring, Allan got the call he’d been waiting for.
The Bird Scarer was his.
Allan wants to keep it as original as possible, he intends to restore and paint it up in the same Blomfield Excavations colour that it has always been, caterpillar yellow.
He expects the restoration to take about 12 months, and when it’s done, the White 9000 won’t be going to back to work. Instead, it will be towing a bogie float, taking Allan’s vintage tractors to shows.
He even plans on putting Mick’s name on the door.
“It doesn't need a great deal of work, mainly cosmetic fix ups,” he says.
“My town’s pretty small and this truck was from my early childhood, it’s just always been in my life.”
Allan’s got a soft spot for the classics. He’s got a couple of B61 Macks waiting their turn for a resto in the shed, none of them are complete just yet.
Growing up with both sides of his family in transport, he says his love of trucks has been “pretty hard to get out of”.
With the town’s crown jewel finally his after years of fighting, Allan and the Bird Scarer’s story is only just beginning.
Isn’t she a beauty? This rig is in need of a good resto

This year 220 vehicles cruised along NSW for the fourth annual Coasting the Coast event

200 vehicles coasted along NSW and Guy couldn’t be happier.
Images: Jeff Davis.
For those of you who live in New South Wales, you should know a little bit about the Peats Ferry Bridge and how it’s been 80 years since it first opened in 1945 after being in construction since 1938.
That was one of the reasons why the annual Coasting the Coast event was held on May 4 this year, to celebrate the state’s historical bridge.
“It has interesting history in itself, in the way they made it,” event founder Guy Ellis says.
“I think it was unbelievable how they floated the sections in place with barges and used the tide to put the bridge spans up. And now as part of the event, our vehicles get to go over it.”
But the reason this event started in the first place, is how every truck show or convoy begins…
Over a beer with a mate.
“My mate and I decided over a drink that we would like to put on an event for cars and trucks travelling the Old Pacific Highway
between Sydney and Newcastle,” he says.
“There are similar truck events across Australia and we both have vintage trucks; this is the kind of stuff we enjoy, so we thought it would be a nice idea.
“Initially we just wanted trucks at the event, but it ended up including cars, motorbikes, buses, fire engines and trucks.”
Guy was the tail end vehicle with his 1985 Volvo F7 fire engine.
“I came through the roundabout just before the pie shop on the Old Pacific Highway to see about 200 vehicles outside the shop spread on both sides of the road,” he says.
“I remember saying to my wife, ‘oh my goodness, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many vehicles in one spot outside the pie shop’.
“And luckily there’s good parking there, so we didn’t disrupt any traffic. Everything just went so well!”
Every year, it thrills Guy how far they take the show.
This year, 220 vehicles coasted along NSW, with 32 trucks roaring loud amongst their fellow machines.
Year by year, the numbers have climbed. Compared to their first event they’ve only excelled, with 50 vehicles showing up the first year, numbers doubled to 100 the year after, then 150 the year after that.
Guy’s head was turning for a few of the big rigs at this year’s event, with the Internationals and old 1920 rigs catching his eye.
And the little kids couldn’t have agreed more…
“We had people on the sides of the road waving us by, and they were mainly little kids,” he laughed.
“They love to put their little arms in the air to signal the horn and the truckies quite enjoy that.”
“The truckies give a blast or two and you just see the children’s faces light up.”
Guy says going down the old roads as part of Coasting the Coast is a reminder of the journey’s truckies used to take, and that it’s
nice for the younger people to be involved with that; tracing the winding roads and passing by old roadside stops.
“We went back up the old roads where now it’s all expressway,” he says.
“Driving from Sydney to Newcastle used to take a couple of days, whereas now it takes a couple of hours.”
To run Coasting the Coast, it takes a team of two, just Guy and his co-organiser, which he says works well, as they bounce ideas off of each other without the drag of a million other ideas and opinions.
“It’s great to see some young people who are a part of our club and participate in the event,” he says.
“If we have no young people, our passion dies, so they’re very important to us.”
Despite its quick growth, Guy insists on keeping Coasting the Coast accessible and free. With six sponsors who cover most of the costs, Guy isn’t in it for the money, but rather the community and devoted love of machines.
There were 32 roaring trucks at this year’s event – check out these awesome rigs!

As shown here, many unique verhicles turned up on the day!
The population of the small, New South Wales town of Denman almost tripled on Saturday April 26, as a machine loving crowd of just under 4,000 came to visit for the Diesel, Rust, Dust, Truck and Machinery Show.
Roughly 90 trucks cruised their way through the Denman show gates, with Bowers Heavy Haulage’s contribution making event secretary Wayne Turnball look twice.
“They had four of their prime movers there and took home a prize, they were just so detailed!” he says.
However, there were plenty of eye catching big rigs, so it was hard staying focused on only one at a time.
“The organisers don’t want to be the only judges, so there were about 10 different categories that were judged by People’s Choice,” he says.
“Each vehicle got a number and the public walks around and ticks off which one they like. It’s the public’s decision.”
Although the weather looked terrible, that didn’t stop the crowds from swarming on in.
“People came far and wide, from Toowoomba to Sydney, just from all over the shop!”
There was a total whopping figure of 260 vehicles that wowed crowds, not only including trucks, but cars, motorbikes, tractors, bulldozers and stationary engines.
“Our aim of the show is to cater for everybody. It doesn't matter if the vehicle’s new, old, or being restored, they're all welcome,” Wayne says.
“We like to keep the whole family in mind also. We had a massive entertainment area for the children and ran about 20

But it didn’t stop there.
Along with sky scraping trucks and roaring engines, there was face painting, a jumping castle and even a chain-saw carving demonstration.
A family fun-filled day, what’s not to love?
Although, the day wasn’t all just fun and games.
“Westpac Rescue Helicopter was our charity of choice. It’s a charity that will really benefit anyone at any time. We ended up raising $3,500 for them,” he says.
“People can use it in any sort of accident or if ridden with an illness. It's there to save lives. A long time ago I even used it myself.
“The local economy thrives off the money raised also which is really important. We made the day affordable for all walks of life to
come to Denman and enjoy.”
Though organising this show is a massive job for Wayne, it’s also extremely rewarding.
“The highlight for me every year is seeing a smile on people's faces. That’s what it's all about,” he says.
This was the fourth ever Diesel, Rust, Dust, Truck and Machinery Show which came about after COVID. The president wanted a big show, and so a big show is what Denman got.
Along with the truck display, the streets were packed with truck lovers and big rigs, as trucks paraded the streets of the small town throughout the morning.
That weekend, Denman reminded us that even the smallest towns, can throw the mightiest events filled with grease, diesel and a whole lot of family fun.
Above and opposite: A huge variety of rigs and vehicles were on display.
There’s a lot to discover within the Victorian town of Rutherglen, but the annual Rumble is what crowds really need to see

The trucks lined up at Rutherglen, and didn't disappoint
Victoria’s town of Rutherglen is renowned for its fine wine, dining and tourism.
But Nick Hawtin believes it should be known for much more…
“We should show what else we have in our region, like our motorbikes, cars and not to mention our huge trucking industry,” Nick says.
“Truck drivers give their life to the road, so that their kids and family can have a good life. Those kids go to Rutherglen’s schools and live in our town.”
Drawing on the important role trucks and the transport industry play, Nick looked to this sector to help Rutherglen out of a tough spot, and the Rutherglen Rumble was born.
What began in the aftermath of devastating floods just four years ago, has morphed into a truck show that has taken the town by storm.
“After the major floods, we just wanted to do something for Rutherglen,” he says.
“Now I want people to recognise that there’s more to our town. We call this show the largest mental health by stealth event.
“We do it because it’s a place where the truckies get to have a chat and a laugh, meet new people or even find another job.”
This year, the Rutherglen Rumble raised an impressive amount, donating $10,000 to Gateway Health, $3,500 to the Rutherglen Agricultural Society and $1,000 to the SES.
“This event means a hell of a lot to us, as
Check out this monster Mack

An impressive 57 rigs made it to the show
What a line-up — too many good looking rigs to look at! Thousands were raised to go toward mental health and charities
there’s a lot of mental health issues in this region,” he says.
“What was really great, was Gateway Health notifying us that five truckies reached out while they were at the event. This is what it’s all about, even if we only save one life.
“Our aim was exactly that, to get drivers to reach out for mental health because it can get lonely on the road. There’s no point in running this event if you haven’t got your heart in the right place. Due to our large trucking industry, we just try to do what we can for the region.”
And yet, there were more activities to keep the smiles and laughs alive.
There was wood chopping, a shovel muster to show off some cool motorcycles and a swap meet. But when the sun dipped low, people pulled up their vehicles and deck chairs to enjoy an old school drive in cinema, featuring Smokey and the Bandit, a classic!
But that’s not all. This year was different than the rest, as this year they pitted iconic machines head-to-head in a crowd showdown called Legends VS Classics for the first time ever. And now it shall become an annual thing.
A standout total of 57 big rigs made a rumbling entrance into Rutherglen, where around 3,000 people gathered round to chat, observe and participate in the fun.
But the best part about this whole show for Nick isn’t the growl of engines and shiny chrome.
“Honestly, what’s most important to me, is raising money that saves lives.”
This show was proof that mental health doesn’t need to be a taboo subject treated with hushed tones and silent voices.
It can be tackled with fun, petrol fumes and truck lovers leaning on each other — the Aussie way.
The band jamming out and keeping the crowd entertained!

Allan Casey found a 1984 Kenworth scattered into a million pieces and transformed it into a head turner
Words: Tiane Gavillucci

Check out this stunner roaming the snow
It all began at his son’s soccer game.
While most parents were casually talking about tactics or weekend plans, Allan Casey was deep in conversation about all thing’s trucks with a former school mate, who mentioned an old Kenworth wasting away at his property.
Curious, Allan decided to make the trip and have a look at this supposedly run down rig.
“I brought it home in a million pieces, but everything was there to keep it all original,” he says.
“It was on about 10 pallets in a paddock when I found it. There was no diff under it, no motor, no gearbox. It was just everywhere.”
Most would have taken the easier route and walked away, but Allan rolled up his sleeves.
For the next 12 months he toiled, alone, stitching the 1984 SAR Kenworth back together and slowly, a forklift and determination became his best mates.
“That was the hardest part, doing it alone and trying to get all the heavy parts in place.”
“I’ve got a forklift but that thing is like an ant, it can lift three times its weight, the poor little thing,” he laughs.
But let’s rewind for a moment. This wasn’t just a random, fantasy project for Allan, trucks have always been a part of his life.
“My family has lived and breathed trucks and earth-moving gear all their lives,” he says.
“I think it's in our blood. We've always liked trucks and one day I planned to restore one, then this SAR popped up, so the job was on.”
It stands out in any crowd
Digging into the truck’s past, Allan chased down some history with a man from Tasmania who provided him with lots of information about its former life.
Little was he to know, his Kenworth would have a full circle moment.
“He sent me the ad of the truck in Deals on Wheels around ten years ago when it was advertised for sale,” he says.
And now here it is, yet again. But this time it’s to show off Allan’s handy work.
Old receipts had fallen down under the seat and behind the dash of the truck, which also told another life the old Kenworth had lived.
“I believe it used to have a tipper on it and towed a trailer with his bobcat on it. I found a few receipts from landscaping supplies,” he says.
Allan then tracked down the truck’s original fleet number as KA 247 and slowly but surely, brought the old rig back to life.
As we’ve already discussed, the rig started off as a cab on a chassis with no diffs under it, so Allan had to start from scratch.
He brought it home on a tilt truck and stripped the chassis rails before sand blasting them. He then tidied up the six rod suspension, re-bushing things that needed replacing.
“I put all new wheel bearings right throughout it, as well as new brake linings, boosters, air lines,” he says. “The gearbox had been reconditioned before I got it, and the diffs have all been re-coated.”
“A guy in Wagga did a full rebuild on the motor, so it went in, and the truck got running, then I continued with the rebuild.
“I re-sheeted the panels and back of the cab as it had been cut open.
“So, I put it back to a single day cab and got
all the electrics working again. But I have to give a shoutout to Express Trucks Service in Queanbeyan for all the help they gave me along the way, with the wiring mainly. They did such a great job.”
Piece by piece, the truck was finally standing tall, and Allan’s next step was to paint it up and get the historic rego.
Allan discovered the Kenworth as a plain old white rig, so he decided to breathe some life back into it and paint it back to its original colours, a vibrant purple, white and red.
“So, it was finally done, and I started to take it for little drives, found a few bugs that appeared, along with some air leaks and various things I had missed along the way,” he laughs.
Once the truck was roadworthy, Allan gave it a second life on the show circuit and hauled a little step deck trailer with it.
“I've got an old Caterpillar 4D that's restored also, and we put it on the trailer and take it to a few shows as well. It’s now retired to light duty, as some may say.”
And now after five years and countless hours spent with grease, machinery and diesel; Allan has sold it.
“I just got rid of it last week to a guy down in Melbourne,” he says.
“He’s going to go through it all over again, finish off the little things I never got to do. I never touched the dash, so he will most likely tidy it up and get it all working again which will be nice to see.”
In the end, Allan couldn’t be more pleased.
“God knows how many millions of kilometres that thing has done up the highways over the years,” he says.
“It's good to keep the old bangers on the road and preserve the history that comes with them.”
Look at this beauty! It’s hard not to look twice…
When a truck becomes part of the family, it’s a sight to behold
Words: Tiane Gavillucci

Trucks — “you either love them, or you hate them,” Andrew Sculli says.
Which I guess is true, you either don’t think twice about them, or like Andrew, you dream of owning a particular one from childhood.
An old Atkinson is the truck he admitted to fantasising over when he was growing up. To him and his mate, this was one “iconic” rig.
“A mate of mine had an Atkinson, and growing up as a kid, I was sat in the yard at TCB Transport which had a few old girls there,” he says.
“My mate wanted to sell it, and when I first looked at it, I said, ‘gee, it needs a lot of work’ so I bought it off him and that’s when the journey began.”
Originally it was a prime mover that was converted into a twin steer hauling timber and saw-dust, then it fell into TCB’s hands. Overall, the truck was run down, not to mention the inside was rough, but Andrew saw its potential.
“I could never sell it. Its year being 1988 makes it even more special as my wife was
born that same year, so I told her I’d keep this one forever,” he says.
When Andrew first brought the truck home, he didn’t dive straight into glamming it up.
“I didn’t want to take that old school look away,” he says.
“I haven’t done all the glitz and glam to it, not yet anyway.”
But what he did do was restore it and the first stop was the mechanic, who gave it a once over.
The interior was going to be a “major job”, so Andrew got to work, but while doing so, he uncovered part of the truck’s past.
“It was an ex IPEC truck, so it was originally yellow. They had the twin lights on it and upgraded the suspension and the electrical side of it, so we just rewired it,” he says.
“We put the new bunk in, inserted the seats, dash and got it all up to scratch and then we put a new 400 Cummins motor in. It was a slow process.”
The outside of the truck remains TCB red, but underneath it has kept its IPEC yellow. On its side it features TCB’s signature eagle logo. Andrew explains that in New Zealand, Atkinson’s are called Eagles and this is what the logo would be a reference to.
“Passing all these new trucks in the Atkinson is good fun,” he says.
“You see all the old girls passing the new ones which just shows how strong the old rigs were built.
“You feel every bump, every bit of the road. The old school is a classic and I would never
want to take that old look away from it.”
I can just picture Andrew’s 1988 truck rolling by as heads turn, kids point and old timers nod at the vintage vehicle. As Andrew says, you don’t see too many historic ones these days.
You would think an old truck like that would be babied, rolled out only for shows or short runs, but not this Atkinson.
“I’ve been working it every day,” he says. “I’ve driven up to Queensland truck shows and it’s
It may be more than 30 years old, but it still knows how to work
There's no rest for the busy Atkinson
still going strong, these trucks are virtually bulletproof.”
“Driving to Queensland and back was one of the longest trips I’ve done in it, I even brought the old school tarp out.
“It’s just good old school driving. When you’re driving one of these, you’re driving a truck.”
Andrew has owned the old Atkinson for three years now, and it does all sorts of work, whether it’s a big job, a joy ride or going to the market to take some empty pallets, it’s always in use.
“I maintain a connection with the Indigenous community up in Queensland. Every few weeks, they cut up firewood and I bring it down,” he says.
“I just fell into this venture. This truck mostly hauls firewood as well as the odd general fruit and veg.”
Being in the fruit and vegetable industry,
Andrew says he sees plenty of trucks in his day to day and has a natural born passion for it.
Even his son has taken after him…
“The kids had to take their favourite items into prep class, my son brought in a truck magazine that he loves,” Andrew laughs.
“He tells me all the time, ‘dad, I’m going to buy a long nose.’ He’s a little me, I love that my kids love trucks too.”
And the Atkinson is a crowd favourite at school too.
“Parents ride cars into school, I pick mine up in the truck, and all the kids come charging over,” he says.
“I do this work just for fun. I work in retail with fruit and veg, but since I was a kid, I’ve just always loved a good truck.”
Andrew plans on getting a trailer to match his rig, maybe one day. But for now, the “old girl’s” holding her own just fine.

A stranded 1967 International survived the Vietnam war and was then meticulously restored by the Bellekom father and son duo
Words: Tiane Gavillucci

The International, standing tall now, didn’t always look this good
The average city goer would look at an old truck and think of it as ‘junk’, but Beau Bellekom and his dad from Bellekom Haulage saw a golden opportunity for a restoration. It was sun bleached, and rust ridden, with homemade doors, marooned on a strawberry farm in Hope Valley, Western Australia.
But to an 11-year-old Beau and truck loving father, the 1967 International was ripe with potential as well as a survivor of Vietnam wartimes.
“When we found it, it was in pretty bad form,” Beau says.
“It had no tip body or winch and was in desperate need of a paint job and rust repair.”
But where others would have seen a carcass, Beau and his dad saw a challenge.
“My dad taught me all there is to know about restoration when I was around 11,” he says.
“So, we started stripping all the bad parts of the truck off. We found some original doors and a bonnet for the rig and started to pull it all together, then gave it a paint job.
“A couple of years later we found a tip body for it.
Beau says the restoration took five, maybe six years to complete, and patience was quickly needed as part of the process.
And so was paint… a lot of it.
“I painted it around six times because the painters kept getting the colours wrong,” he laughs.
Eventually the right parts came together, a body for the truck was sourced and the original structure slowly reemerged from
under years of neglect, held together by elbow grease and long working hours.
And though it's been ready for a while now, the truck still doesn’t get driven much.
“We never really used it, it mostly sits in the front yard,” Beau says.
“I’ve taken it to a couple of shows and bring it down to grandad’s farm once a year.”
The truck is a reflection of the transport blood that runs deep in the Bellekom family.
Because of his dad, Beau is in the transport industry also, and for work, drives a Kenworth K123.
But here’s the twist to the story… this vintage International is now up for sale.
“I need the money to put into my working truck,” he says.
“I really don’t want to sell it, so if it doesn’t sell, I won’t give it away because it is a great truck overall.”
And a great truck it is. Not only because of its history or the war scars it wears beneath its

A vintage 1965 Ford gets a restoration makeover and turns into a truck show lover's dream
Words: Tiane Gavillucci
Images: Tom Fagan & Stephen Corstorphan
The 1965 Ford is looking as sharp as ever
The competitive energy at truck shows is reaching new heights, as classic vintage rigs are capturing the spotlight, often outshining the latest Mack and Kenworth models.
Retro rigs are preserved history and often brought back to life when the right owner provides it with the right kind of restoration.
Stephen Corstorphan knows a thing or two about transforming a beaten down rig into a show truck, and in the early 90s, he did just that.
An old 1965 Ford F750 sat at co-worker,
Brian Adams’ home. A little battered and bruised, but nothing too serious, the truck had a bit of character.
“When I first discovered the truck, it had only done about 200,000 miles, had no brakes, couple of dents on it and the paint was faded out,” Stephen says. “It really wasn’t too bad.”
The truck had been used for one thing only, it towed a two-deck stock crate of sheep mostly.
Stephen and his father who had experience
It sure is a classic!
working on Ford trucks while at Bramble Security decided its workhorse days were over.
It was time to gear up and hit the showgrounds… but not without a proper resto first.
“It was all sanded back down to bare metal, we repaired the dents and then painted it British Racing Green,” Stephen says.
“We redid the seats, put new carpet in, a new windscreen, a set of heads on the motor, water pump. We fixed all the brakes on it, all the wheel cylinders, the master cylinder, we did everything.
“Then we put a turntable back on it along with mud guards. It initially was white and green though; we just freshened it up.”
The truck that once hauled sheep across vast stretches of land was now ready for a new journey turning heads at truck shows.
Like most truck restorers, Stephen’s connection to the world of trucks runs deep.
“I was a mechanic, and my dad was always on the highway,” he says.
“Now I’m a truckie, but I did get into truck repairs and rebuilding, and that eventually turned into restoration.”
And the Ford isn’t the only truck he has owned, currently he has another two Diamond T’s, a testament for his love of vintage vehicles.
But as the years went on and the space for his trucks grew tighter, the decision was made to sell the 1965 Ford.
It was about six years ago now, that he knew it was time for the truck to move on to another chapter in its life.
So, Brian Adams' son took over the truck for a couple of years before selling it to a collector in Mildura, where it rests today.
From the dusty stalls of Brian Adams’ yard to the polished finish of a show truck, Stephen’s Ford has had quite the ride.
After tragedy strikes from a natural disaster, BlazeAid volunteers’ step in to help rural farmers get their lives back on track
Words: Tiane Gavillucci

These volunteers save lives everyday
There have been 40,000 volunteers put the hand up to help out
It started on a farm with three kilometres of fencing gone and a question in the local paper.
In the wake of the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires, Melissa Jones and her family stared at what the flames had left behind of their farm.
“My mum put a small ad in the local newspaper asking for some help to put our fence back up,” she says.
“We had 25 people turn up and the fences were done within a week.
“Since then, my mum said we have to pay the help forward to our neighbours, and that’s how BlazeAid began.”
BlazeAid grabs an army of volunteers who
assist rural property owners following a natural disaster, primarily rebuilding farm fencing.
What started as neighbours helping each other out during a rough time, has transformed into an organisation that can help change lives.
“The importance of fencing is almost like a house to some farmers, because if they don't have their fences, they can't contain their stock, and if they can't contain their stock, then they have no income,” she says.
But beyond that, Melissa says the amount of time that it takes, and the cost involved is extraordinary.
“There was an estimated five or six hundred kilometres of ruined fencing after the Grampian fires. A property owner got a quote for $26,000 per kilometre to rebuild a fence. Some property owners have got 100 kilometres down. You can't even imagine the financial burden that would cost somebody.
“If you were to do it yourself - depending on the terrain and the soil type - it would take around a kilometre per month, so a long, long, long time to be without income.”
BlazeAid has had a whopping 40,000 volunteers walk through their doors, who have cleared and rebuilt about 40,000 kilometres of fencing across Australia, had 225 base camps set up around the country
and contributed an estimate of $400 million towards disaster recovery in Australia.
When Deals on Wheels spoke to Melissa in late April, BlazeAid were busy in Victoria with two camps set, 40 to 60 volunteers helping out each day and were just launching a job in flood-stricken Queensland, a job Melissa describes as “absolutely massive”.
“It’s comparable to the 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires, but in flood respects. I
think we'll have about five or six camps up there, and at the moment, we've had about 200 people offer assistance,” she says.
Moving volunteers and gear across the whole of Australia is no small feat. Thankfully, BlazeAid has a powerful partner, Isuzu Trucks.
So far Isuzu has donated two trucks to the organisation, but there are more on their way.
These six seaters are used to transport

trailers full of tools, as well as the BlazeAid team to work, driving them lengthy 10 hour journeys trekking across rural land.
BlazeAid's help is bringing hope to farmers facing massive challenges just to keep their businesses going
“The Isuzu trucks are just diamonds,” Melissa says. “They’re on the go 24/7, thank god Isuzu is such a reliable truck that we can use all the time, it’s a real blessing.”
But while the logistics are enormous, the emotional weight is even heavier.
Loading up!
When Melissa talks about the people BlazeAid helps, you can understand why it means as much as it does.
“To hear the stories of heartache that some people are going through is a lot. If we look at the Queensland floods, a lot of those farmers have lost 90 to 95 per cent of their herds and stock,” she says.
“I’ve spoken to a farmer who has spent the last two weeks burying their cattle. Farmers love their animals, so a lot of them are on the brink of suicide at times. To get to them quickly and to be able to help enough to save them from what they’re going through, as well as their own feelings, is a challenge.”
The people BlazeAid are helping aren’t just dealing with financial loss, but also grief and trauma, and can be teetering on the edge as a result.
But while this job has its moments of heartbreak, the reward is worth it for Melissa.
“At times they’ll ring us six months down the track when they’re in a better mind space and tell us that if BlazeAid weren’t there, they weren’t sure what they would have done. It’s both challenging and intensely rewarding,” she says.
Despite the challenges, Melissa remains fiercely optimistic about BlazeAid’s future.
Her hope is to grow the organisation’s capacity to respond even faster.
“We want to be where we are needed as quickly as possible and boost our volunteer numbers, so our farmers - who keep this country going in many ways and keep food on our table - feel like they’re getting support from all over Australia,” she says.
“Farming is a really tough profession, and if we don't put our hands up and give people the help when they need it most, then what kind of society do we live in?
“It’s a beautiful job we have here at BlazeAid to be able to help others when they're in their greatest need and all we want from it, is a thank you. That’s it! It’s the joy of giving, isn’t it?!”
BlazeAid doesn’t ask for much. Just for
volunteers to roll their hard working sleeves up and for some compassion from others.
“I honestly think I have the best job in the world,” Melissa says.
“Every day, I get to see the best of humanity in people who show up, give their time, do a good few days hard work, and give themselves to this work without want of reward.”
“My philosophy is simple; if you have the will and the way to help others, then you should. And this is something that we do every day, and it's an absolute blessing.”
And thanks to Melissa, her mum’s simple promise and the growing army of compassionate Aussies, BlazeAid is saving lives — one fence post at a time.
Brendan Knight tells Deals on Wheels how he came across a 1977 Acco and his plan to keep it exactly as is
Words: Tiane Gavillucci

Brendan discovered this old rig on Facebook Marketplace
You don’t scroll past a 1977 Acco 7010A without pausing first. Any truck lover would at least stop, admire, dream and then continue to scroll on past.
Brendan Knight wasn’t even looking specifically for it. But Facebook Marketplace has a funny way of calling to people like him who see rust not as ruin, but as character.
“I’m always buying old stuff,” he says. “I only just bought the truck this year.”
A new purchase and a statement that hints at a shed full of ‘old stuff’ I’m sure.
This 1977 Acco came from a farm about 30 minutes out of Armadale and was owned by an elderly couple.
“The older lady drove the truck and the only reason she gave it up was because she could no longer drive it,” he says.
No tragedy, just life. And so, the baton was passed to Brendan.
Now, an old truck like that, you would think it would have clocked over a million kilometres by now, easy right?
“It’s only got 76,000 kilometres on the dash,” he says.
For a machine almost 50 years old, that’s barely a warmup!
And of course, Deals on Wheels loves a good resto story, so we had to ask Brendan what kind of changes or improvements have, or will be made.
But why fix a good thing?
“I’ve decided that it’s going to stay the way it is,” he says. “I just plan on getting a new tray on it.
And sometimes, that’s the best thing to do. Preserve history and leave it alone. Even the colour and paint job hasn’t been touched or fiddled with.
The Acco is more than a project, it’s a tool for Brendan who owns a skip bin company.
“I purchased it especially for my car trailer, I just wanted a flatbed to put stuff on,” he says.
“I’m always buying new things, so this is what I use to transport everything in.”
And he wasn’t lying. Remember that shed full of ‘old stuff’ mentioned earlier? Well, he has quite the vehicle lineup back at home.
“I’ve got an early 60s Toyota, a Dodge fire truck and an old school T-Liner,” he says.
“I haven’t fixed up any of them yet. However, some are being restored as we speak.
“The old Toyota is complete original - it’s got that nice patina look to it. It was a dump truck, and I was driving it around on club rego.”
While Brendan’s other passion projects receive a makeover, the Acco will remain as its charming, old self.
It’s a truck that has seen decades of
change, sun, dust and grease and still refuses to retire.
Brendan plans on getting it back up and running on the road once again and drive it on club rego.
He says he wants nothing more, than to “enjoy driving it”.
And that seems to be the whole point of these old rigs. To keep, honour and maintain them, and revel in the earlier days of trucking.
The Acco’s only clocked 76,000 kilometres, it was formerly owned by an elderly couple

Every student wants a sweet ride to their school formal, and Dominic Hill was lucky enough to get a classic Kenworth
Words: Tiane Gavillucci

It’s not every day a truck brings you into your school formal
Every Aussie high school kid remembers their formal.
It’s the one night of the year where students can dress up, teachers let loose, and you can rock up in the fanciest form of transport possible.
Whether it be a limousine, a sports car or even a party bus, there’s no limit to how far you can go on this one night of your schooling career.
An – almost - high school graduate, Dominic Hill, thought what better way to arrive to a school formal than in a 2021 Kenworth T610 SAR.
Not your everyday way to rock up to a school event, but definitely the coolest.
“Getting driven into formal felt like a no brainer to me. I’ve always loved trucks for as long as I can remember, and the idea of taking another car just felt boring,” Dominic says.
“I love the look of "The Maori Stallion", I just think it’s so cool. Plus, me and the driver Owen get along really well, so that’s always a bonus.
“He was also nice enough to take me to semi formal last year as well.”
Boring isn’t a word anyone would associate with ‘The Maori Stallion’, owned by the Emerald Carrying Company.
Its name honours its regular driver, Owen D. Tueri, a man of Maori descent from New Zealand.
Dominic’s choice of wheels was a full circle moment coming from a kid who fell in love with trucking thanks to his mum.
“I got really into trucks when I started in high school,” he says.
“Mum would point them out whenever we drove past one and she would tell me everything she knew about them.
“Especially the Kenworths - I love how they look and sound.”
But the 2021 built Kenworth that Dom chose to ride in, wasn’t just picked from a random fleet. Though he’s just a student, Dominic already has a connection and one foot in the transport world.
Dominic has been learning the ropes and seeing what his potential future can look like during his work experience at the Emerald Carrying Company.
“Currently I’m in my last year of school, but I hope to get a job in the transport field when I'm finished,” he says.
“I’ve been lucky enough to get this work experience, which I honestly couldn’t be more wrapped about.”
A future in trucks and transport is exactly the career path this young man aspires to take.
“I really hope to eventually work in the general freight areas, helping put the pallet separators between the freight and washing the trucks,” he says.
“I believe I can be very good at these tasks and can perform to a very high standard.”
Dominic’s passion for the industry isn’t just talk, it’s a reality he’s already impressively living.
And while most of Dominic’s mates may have arrived in pressed suits and stretched limos, he got to climb down from a high polished workhorse, that hauls freight by day and steals the show by night.
When he and the blue beauty had arrived at the venue, most of his mates were already inside, but the buzz from his arrival in this mighty machine, lingered into the next week.
“When I came back to school on Monday, a number of teachers asked for photos and said how cool The Maori Stallion looked and that made me real happy,” he says.
Dominic’s dreams are covered in chrome and diesel soot. His trucking favourites are the Kenworth T909s, the K200 and the Legend SAR… no surprises there. But looking toward
his future, there’s one truck that he dreams to own.
“It’s got to be the T900 Legend, inside and out it’s so nice. I’m jealous of whoever owns one,” he says.
But when Deals on Wheels asked Dominic about the long-awaited and much-loved Aussie formal night in general, his love for trucks took the cake.
“Of course it was good spending that time with friends... But the best part was still the drive in with the truck,” he says.
And whether he’s behind the wheel, or under the hood, there’s one thing for sure — Dominic won’t be taking the boring way anywhere. Not when there’s a truck to take him.
Everyone was impressed with Dom’s choice of transport
What a machine!
The Maori Stallion in all its glory.

In memory of a fellow community member, the Rob Burns Memorial Show displays some of the best vehicle models Tumut has to offer
Words: Tiane Gavillucci
Images: Graham Button
Check out that detail… What a stunner!
If there’s one thing the transport industry is known for, it’s mateship and celebrating one another.
When the small town of Tumut in New South Wales lost community member Rob Burns to cancer, an idea to create an event in his memory, sparked.
The Rob Burns Memorial Show is exactly that, a 20 year — and counting — tribute, which continues to showcase dazzling models of
cars, planes, bikes and most importantly, trucks!
“I resurrected the show only last year after it went into hibernation for almost a decade,” event organiser Graham Button says.
“Rob was a local lad from Tumut, and he was very into modelling panel vans which is why we have this show.”
In total, there were an incredible 350 models on display, and while Graham had the
blue beauties are hard to look away from
full-on job of putting the show all together, he also contributed to it.
He built a model inspired by a real-life funeral truck based out of Canberra called the ‘Last Ride’.
“I loosely built it off the original truck and put the names of all of our modelling mates on the back of it,” he says.
“It took about six months on and off. I purchased the kit for a start and then used photo references from the real truck for inspiration and went from there.
“I even got a tiny coffin made to go on the back of the model and then made a few modifications, placed an aluminium tank and bull bar on it and just tweaked it to make it look Australian.”
Alongside Graham’s creation, there were 40 other truck models carefully crafted by the people of Tumut. Although there was one truck in particular that completely stole Graham’s attention — a MAN cabover.
The event raised roughly $1,400 for Can Assist, a charity that, as Graham puts it, “keeps the money local.”
Can Assist provides Cancer Assistance for Country New South Wales.
“A lot of charities get funded from the government, and it all goes into administration costs, but this way the money stays local and is in memory of Rob Burns,” Graham says.
With a helping hand, Graham and the community made this event possible, which is one of the most important parts of the show to him, the people behind it.
“The camaraderie and atmosphere are what mean the most to me,” he says.
“It feels good to surround ourselves with like-minded people, while supporting those facing cancer.”
Awards to recognise entrant’s creativity were handed out, including the People’s Choice Award, the Rob Burns’ Memorial Award and the Best Junior, Intermediate and Senior Truck, Car, Bike and Plane.
And so, another show year of painstakingly crafted and proudly displayed models comes to a close, with our sights all ready and set for the next one.
The detail in these models is impressive!

Bringing together a wide array of disparate parts to deliver a stunning result, every day, is part of Jane Savage’s life
Words & Images: Warren Aitken
Welcome to another ‘Women in Trucking’ profile.
Hallam Truck Centre has become a second home to Jane since she started four years ago. She loves the team around her, as well as getting to deal with customers and salesmen alike
Today I decided to take a look at a different avenue within our industry. It’s a role where there’s still a little bit of driving. It’s a role where you occasionally need to get your hands dirty. It’s a role where you spend a lot of time dealing with truckies, but most importantly, it is a role where having a lifelong passion for the industry is a massive advantage. Meet Jane Savage, sales co-ordinator for Hallam Truck Centre in Victoria.
Before we get into Jane’s story and her views of the transport industry, lets focus on the role she has held for the last four years.
Young Jane has been in and around trucks for as long as she can remember, School holidays were spent riding shotgun with her uncle as he explored the country
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play a grown-up, real-life version of Tetris? Don’t tell me you don’t remember that game? It was an old computer game where you started with a blank screen and had to sort and juggle different shaped blocks that scrolled down the screen at you. Just when you had one sorted the next one would come down, then the next, then the next, with increased frequency. The idea was to get everything to fit together perfectly, seamlessly and with time to spare. It was an incredibly frustrating game. Now imagine doing that in real life.
That is the abstract way of describing Jane’s role. For the more literal description I shall let Jane explain.
“My job involves looking after all the new truck sales. The salesperson will deal with the customer, take the deal, take the order. Spec up the truck and order it from the factory,” Jane says.
“Then they’ll bring the deal file to me, I’ll enter all that into our system. Issue all the purchase orders, book in all the spots for stainless, turntables, bull bars, everything to be fitted.
“Once it comes off the line at PACCAR’s Bayswater factory, I organise and manage it all the way through until the salesperson hands the keys over when it is all completed.”
Now, where the Tetris comparison comes in is when you consider that Jane is doing all of this for every new truck coming through the very busy Hallam Truck centre. Sometimes that’s upwards of 20 trucks per month that she is overseeing. Dealing with multiple suppliers for everything from lines and scrolls to custom interiors and fit outs. With everyone prioritising their own jobs and Jane having to balance all of that. Tetris almost sounds relaxing compared to that. Not for Jane though, it is a job she relishes, for a company she loves.
“It can get very busy, very hectic,” Jane says. “But I love it. I love the trucks. My husband calls me a Truckwit. There is something about them, they are cool to look at, they are cool to drive. I love seeing them come together.
“When a salesperson brings me the order file, I look at what model it is, what is getting done to it, what stainless is getting done and it’s exciting to picture how it is going to look”.
Jane didn’t just happen to stumble into this role, she has grown up surrounded by heavy vehicles.
Her dad has been driving rubbish trucks all his life and even now at a ripe old retirement age, he is still getting up at 1am to drive and manage the front lift team at KS Environmental.
Her Uncle, on her mum’s side, is a linehaul driver as well and Jane was a frequent passenger with him.
“I used to spend my school holidays in the truck with my uncle. We’d go to Brisbane, pick up a load. He’d treat me to a trip to SeaWorld
Her dad has been working the rubbish trucks for as long as Jane can remember and K & S has been a backdrop to the majority of Jane's transport backed life
Whilst Jane was happy to pose for a shot at her desk, her role ensures it’s not the only place you will find her. She is forever on the go, in a role that she loves and that definitely challenges and rewards her
or something before we made our way back,” recalls Jane with a laugh.
“I’ve been around the industry my whole life. Then I met my husband Mace, and he drives tippers, so, yeah, all my life I’ve been around trucking.”
As much as Jane loved the trucks and traveling in them, her skills for organisation and administration took her employment opportunities in a different direction.
“My first job was kind of along the transport lines, in the automotive industry,” Jane says.’
“I thought it would be a good thing, working with trucks. I am a highly organised person and have a good memory which is needed in this role.”
Jane took to the position like bugs to a bull bar, having already been a part of the industry through her family as well as her husband Mace, it gave her a fair bit of respect from within the transport fraternity. Something she utilises continuously in order to keep on top of her role.
Jane will take any opportunity to get in and help shift the trucks around the Hallam yard. The team were instrumental in helping her gain her license and Jane makes sure she puts it to use
“It was working for Autobarn, then I got a job at my dad’s work, KS Environmental.
“I worked there for about 10 years. I started in the sales/admin side and ended up out on the road doing all the high clientele stuff, looking after their contracts. I ended up doing my events diploma and was co-ordinating all the big events, like Spring Carnival and stuff.”
Jane’s redirect into a real-life Tetris savant came about after the birth of her and Mace’s daughter Dakota.
“I’d had a year away from work when Dakota was born, then in 2020 this job came up.
“I understand that I am working in a male dominated world, but I have never really had any issues. Especially working here.
“I had more issues when I was working at Autobarn, with customers.
“I work in the industry, but I also love the industry and that helps. I attend a lot of events, like shows and stuff. So, I get to meet a lot of the suppliers when I go to these events and then it all becomes a lot more personal.”
Working for a company like Hallam Truck Centre has also been advantageous for a ‘TruckWit’ like Jane.
“We have quite a few women working in
different roles here” exclaims Jane “this side of the building is basically all women, and we’ve even got a female apprentice out in the workshop.”
Staffing aside, it is also the opportunities afforded to Jane that solidifies her love of the job.
“The team here helped me get my HR license as well. I needed to get it to help move trucks around if I need too.
“Ken, our delivery bloke kindly gave me a few lessons, doing hot laps around the yard,” Jane says. She also did mention her boss tried doing the same thing, helping her in a different way - i.e. teaching Jane what gear grinding sounds like. The end result being that Jane says, “I have the best of both worlds now” — meaning she gets to organise and assemble these amazing trucks and also has the opportunity to drive some of them as well.
From someone that struggles to organise the few commitments I have each month; I have nothing but respect and admiration for the role Jane plays in delivering outstanding rigs to happy customers on a never-ending rotation. It is easy to see how she succeeds and why there is always a smile on her face. She has a great appreciation for the trucking world and the people in it.
“I love being a part of putting these together, seeing something come out of the factory as this plain looking thing, then seeing it get kitted up to the max and blinged out, it’s insane.”
It is more than just the trucks that inspire her though.
“It’s such a good industry to be a part of. Everyone is always willing to help people out, if they’re short of work they’ll be saying ‘ring this guy or try this bloke’ It’s so good to see.
“And the truckies are such good people, they always rally together when stuff goes wrong.
“If anyone is ever in need, or a kid that’s having a hard time and someone does a fundraiser, it’s always the truckies that come together, do whatever they can, put their trucks on show, do a run, do a drive, throw in some cash. It’s amazing to see it all, and it’s nice to know you’re a part of all of that.”
Really after a quote like that it seems a little egotistical of me to try and add anything more. Hence, I shall wrap up with a simple thank you. It was a pleasure to sit down and talk with Jane and humbling to watch her Tetris skills at work whilst squeezing in time for me. Thank you.
You can’t have two Truckwits like Jane and Mace and not include trucks on the wedding day
Steve O’Meara tells the story of a 1976 Mercedes-Benz truck that created a friendship to last a lifetime
Words: Tiane Gavillucci
Images: Steve O'Meara
The Benz parked up at the Ettamogah Pub enroute to Gundagai for Hauling the Hume 2025
There it was. A 1976 Mercedes-Benz 1418 parked near a grain silo where Steve O’Meara was loading.
“At the time I was working for a company carting grain and came across an old fella with a funny little hat standing beside it,” he says.
The meaning behind the completed signwriting –ex-Sidebottom Haulage and ‘O'Meara Investments’ indicates Steve continuously spending money on the ol’ truck
“He looked a little serious so I came over and asked if I could take a photo of the Benz, just in case he tells me to jump in the creek, but he said, ‘sure, where do you want me to stand?’”
Fast forward about five years and Steve and Ian have been good mates, attending truck shows together and going for drives, and then, the baton of the Benz, was passed to Steve.
“Ian was doing it a bit tough, he couldn’t make the repayments on the truck, so I took over the book for him,” he says.
The 1976 Mercedes-Benz is a different breed of truck, born in an era before electronics took over and everything had a touch screen. The 1418 was built to work.
By the time the Benz was Steve’s, Ian had owned the truck for 22 years, and before that it had lived another working life in Melbourne with Mr Junor who had a bobcat business.
“Ian bought it off him in 2000, and before that, we think it may have been working livestock in Bendigo, we’re still trying to track down the original driver,” he says.
“Before the truck was mine, I knew all the history anyway. I had driven it by myself,
even to a couple of truck shows, so I was fairly familiar with it.”
Before the truck was his, Ian offered to set Steve up doing water carting work with the ‘Ol Trusty’ Benz, reckoning it could bring in 26 grand in 24 days. But Steve was having none of it.
“I'm not ruining the fun by taking it to work, I just want to have fun with it,” he says.
“It’s a nice comfortable truck to be driving around walking pace in all day, so I just like to take it to a few truck shows a year and go for some long drives.”
The Benz is no longer about work, trophies or attention, but rather savouring what we Aussies have left of our historic vehicles.
“I’m not really interested in modern trucks or going to truck shows. I mean if I had a lot of money, I would buy a truck to win a show as well,” he says.
“But when you have something like this old Benz which was painted about 17 years ago and people are coming up saying that I’ve done great job of restoring it, it says a lot. All you got to do is give your truck a polish with some wax, clean it up and paint the chassis. That’s it, every truck just needs a bit of TLC.
“I would have been heartbroken if Ian
had sold this truck, because it's not like it's a $150,000 Ford GT that you can use the money to do something good with. You would cry if you saw someone not look after the truck the same way as you would.”
That’s why Steve’s kept it largely original, tracking down original parts and fussing over the little things.
Trusty when she was new to the Sidebottom Haulage fleet, not yet in fleet colours and still with the tipper body that was fitted by previous owner Mr Junor of Epping
Bryan Anderson of Wallan and Epping — lifelong 1418 specialist — pictured with the high ratio diff which he reconditioned at age 84
Working for Graincorp at Boree Creek NSW
Working with Jacobs Bulk Haulage of Benalla
The repainted chassis and reconditioned diff that Ian chastised Steve about "far too much paint and masking tape"
Unlike the gleaming chrome covered restorations you see on the show circuit, Steve didn’t have a whole lot to fix up with this truck.
“All I’ve done is re-spray the chassis, but Ian told me I used way too much paint for it and was too fastidious,’ he laughs.
“Originally, we thought it had a low ratio diff, so we thought it was quite slow. Ian reckoned it could only do about 75 kilometres an hour comfortably, but he said he wasn’t going to truck shows with a slow truck.”
One of Steve’s mates tracked down a diff that was a higher ratio so the truck could keep up on the open road, and another mate of his, Bryan Anderson who had worked on 1418s all his life got the diff reconditioned.
A bearing needed replacing also, but it had to come from Singapore. Parts weren’t just rare here in Australia, they were almost extinct.
“The Benz was always looked after pretty well, Ian took good care of it, I didn't have a hell of a lot to do either,” he says.
“Ian and I have a lot of inside jokes with each other. He’s been a great mentor and a great mate. It can be stressful sometimes worrying about what truck part you have to fix up next,
but for the most part we have a good lot of fun, and we’ve met so many great people in the heritage truck scene.”
The colour scheme of the Benz matches the rest of Ian’s fleet of Internationals, a beautiful beige and maron, and Steve won’t bother to change it, not when it looks as good as it does.
Steve’s a third generation truckie, but it wasn’t always meant to end up this way - he always had wanted to drive trains, but life had other ideas.
“When I finished school Victoria was in a bad drought, and train driving work dried up. I then bought a house, had a family and then started driving trucks,” he says.
“I guess it was always going to happen at some stage of my life. But I enjoy driving and the work that comes with it. Some of the vehicles I have to use I could take or leave, some of the people as well, but the job in itself is good once you get your head around how to tackle it.”
Reading stories in the Big Rigs magazine since he was eight years old, here Steve is years later, driving around mighty machines, and now reading his own stories featured in this magazine. How funny life can be…
Brief rest stop at Yass service centre with Steve’s mates
One of the photos Steve took the day he first met Ian and ‘Trusty’ at St. James, Victoria, 2015

Queensland’s HiReach Rentals is significantly upgrading its access equipment fleet, with top brands that offer cutting edge technology and optimal safety
HiReach Rentals is renowned for its 30 years of experience hiring and selling machines and ongoing commitment to safety.
With three locations in Queensland – Brisbane, Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast – HiReach has supplied premium plant to some of the largest construction projects in the state since its inception in 1996.
As part of its business ethos, HiReach is continually aiming to offer its customers the safest, most efficient and technologically advanced equipment on the market.
It’s for this reason the business has recently upgraded its hire fleet, with new equipment already available and much more on the way.
“As we are primarily a hire company, we have thousands of machines and, over time, they need to be upgraded to ensure they are adequate for ongoing hire,” HiReach general manager Stephen Bradshaw says.
“By reinvesting in new equipment, our customers will have access to the safest and most-efficient machines, with the added benefit of them being cost-effective.”
Chinese powerhouses XCMG and LGMG are among the brands HiReach has invested in, with a brand new three-tonne LGMG telehandler
that has a seven-metre maximum reach having recently arrived.
A new LGMG AR14J-H articulated boom lift with a working height of 15.9m and extra capacity has also hit the yard, while XCMG scissor lifts and telescopic boom lifts with extra capacity have been procured.
“Some of the new XCMG and LGMG equipment have electric drives, which is more efficient and minimises hydraulic leaks,” Stephen says.
“Different pieces of machinery also have four-wheel drive and a lithium battery, and can last four days without charge, so they are more environmentally friendly.”
While these brands may be lesser known to elevated work platform customers, Stephen says their quality is undeniable.
“Both brands offer strong and reliable built equipment – they have really good machines,” he says.
“They’re workhorses, they do the job well and they’re very responsive. Machines from these brands suit the environment that they’re going in, so the manufacturers are flexible in terms of changing the product based on the customer’s requirements.”
The new equipment doesn’t just stop with XCMG and LGMG however, with new technologically advanced equipment being sourced from

XCMG scissor lifts are among the new arrivals
another Chinese manufacturer –Zoomlion. Boom and scissor lifts from the USA’s Genie and Canada’s SkyJack will be coming soon, while more units from German under-bridge inspection specialist Moog are also on the horizon.
HiReach has carefully chosen these brands to not only be part of the hire fleet but also to train operators on.
With safety being an imperative part of operating these machines, Stephen says the new machines have the latest and greatest technology, minimising potential risks.
“All new equipment has on-board tracking and diagnostics helping to minimise downtime and improve efficiency,” he says.
New equipment coming into the business means older pieces of machinery must go out, but this doesn’t mean they have reached the end of their useful life. Instead, HiReach will be selling various pieces of its second-hand equipment.
Having been thoroughly maintained with quarterly, annual and 10-year inspections at a minimum, Stephen says the equipment HiReach is selling is still highly reliable, working safely and at the optimal level required.
“We’re selling top brands that are still great performers,” he says.
“It’s all happening at the moment, we’ve already had new machines delivered and there’s more to come.”
