75 years young and still on the road. Page 12.

When it comes to the transport industry the types of jobs involved in moving goods from one part of the country to another are almost endless.

While our truckies are key to managing the machinery, juggling the loads and roads in between picking up and dropping off goods, there’s also a raft of mechanics, office staff, accountants, lawyers, invoicing clerks, storeman, schedulers, business owners, board members and more who help to keep the wheels going around.

For those in the business of hauling oversized loads, there’s another group of people who are invaluable when it comes to safe deliveries, and that’s the pilot vehicle drivers, like Christine Thiel.

Tiane Gavillucci caught up with Christine for this edition (see page 12), to find out what led her to driving pilot vehicles at the age of 60, and has kept her there to this day, 15 years later.

It’s a fascinating insight into the challenges faced on the road every day by truckies and their support crews, and also the upsides of having a job that can take you travelling all over our country, getting paid along the way.

The love of all things trucking shines through again in this edition where we catch up with fleets, owner drivers and truck restorers from all around the country at local events including the Koroit Truck Show in Victoria, the Glenelg Vintage Machinery Rally in South Australia, and the Pioneer Timber Cutters Show in New South Wales.

The truck shows offer a great opportunity to see just what can be done to add a personal touch or 10 to an otherwise standard vehicle, including intricate paint work and murals.

For artist Julz Neville, the trucking bug has invaded her busy workspace and she is quickly building a reputation for her steady hand and attention to detail when it comes to adding scrollwork and lettering using old school skills that she is passionate about keeping alive (page 42).

There’s plenty more to read this month, and hundreds of trucks, trailers and different pieces of plant and equipment on sale in the classifieds to help you find the next addition to your collection, be it for business or pleasure.

Enjoy the read.

Isuzu’s 2025 winners

The stunning Isuzu NPR 65-190 Crew Cab – entered by Rob Sibson – and owned by the Glenapp Boys, has been crowned Isuzu Australia’s 2025 Truck of the Year Overall Winner.

Rob’s Crew Cab impressed judges with its outstanding presentation, versatility, and the meaningful role it plays supporting volunteer work in the community.

Rob’s NPR has been carefully tailored from custom bodywork and paint through to powder-coated aluminium wheels, auxiliary fuel capacity and airbag suspension enhancements.

“The truck itself is standard, but I’ve added what I wanted. Ride comfort, pulling power, turning circle, it’s all there,” he says. “It’s got a better turning circle than most vehicles. You can get it into places people don’t expect a truck to fit.”

The NPR is his daily driver and every Friday he loads supplies and heads out to Glenapp Railway Station, where he spends the weekend maintaining the historic site that he and his late brother, Dennis, began restoring years ago.

In addition to winning the top prize, The Glenapp Boys also received accolades as the King of the N Series. Along with claiming the title of 2025 Truck of the Year, Rob took home the Grand Prize of a $6,000 prepaid Digital MasterCard.

In the F series category, Duniam Freight took home the 2025 F Series Truck of the Year award with an Isuzu FVL 240-300 Freightpack, operated by Lisa Smith from Kings Meadow in Tasmania.

Taking out the 2025 FX/FY Series Truck of the Year was Bin Master Skips with their Isuzu

FYJ 300-350 MWB, entered by owner Jaydn Clarke from Albion Park in New South Wales.

Each year, Isuzu’s expert judging panel comes together to review the monthly winners and deliberate on who progresses through to the final rounds.

“This year we saw a high number of entrants, with N Series as the model range most entered,” IAL marketing and advertising manager Sam Gangemi says.

“Through the competition we get the privilege to see and share our customers’ unique truck applications and designs. This year we saw some inspiring ideas.

Each Isuzu Trucks Series winner (N Series, F Series, FX/FY Series) receives a $1,500 prepaid Digital MasterCard.

“While we celebrate this year’s winners, we also extend our gratitude to every Australian truck driver who keeps our industries and communities connected,” Gangemi says.

Isuzu truck owners can enter the 2026 Truck of the Year competition by visiting isuzu.com.au and completing a simple entry form once the competition opens in March, 2026.

GRANNY

At 75, “Cruising Granny” keeps Australia moving, safely guiding oversized loads nationwide

‘Cruising Granny’ hard at work

She’s written many books in her downtime

She’s guiding rigs around blind bends, escorting loads five metres wide, radio crackling and eyes locked on the road ahead. She can’t afford a mistake.

At 75, Christine Thiel doesn’t need the stress – but she thrives on it.

“You don’t exist without us,” a transport boss once told her.

“And you don’t move without us,” she shot back.

And just like that, the so-called “Cruising Granny” summed up an entire profession most road users barely notice, yet rely on every single day.

Australia doesn’t move without trucks, and some trucks can’t move without a pilot vehicle driver.

‘Cruising Granny’ has been guiding oversize rigs for 15 years, but only after she had a “brain snap” at 60.

“I was retired due to some health issues,” she says. “But when that finally got sorted, I had all this energy and wondered, ‘how can I travel and earn some money?’”

Christine has been doing this job for 15 years

Loads can stretch from three and a half, to nine metres wide

“So, I did some research and started my pilot vehicle driving career in Cairns.”

form of official escort - so we're not out there on our own.”

‘Cover to Cover’ is yet another one of her published books

Christine’s responsible for safely guiding oversized loads across Australia’s roads. Loads that can stretch from three and a half, to nine metres wide, navigating and watching the road, the freight, the traffic and the driver.

“The biggest load I’ve ever piloted was for some horrible steel work. It was going to Olympic Dam for a project. When they had finished the project, it got cut up and sent to the recycling dump,” she says.

“I’ve done several eight-metre-wide mining dump trucks and for these kinds of loads, you get three pilots as well as the police - or some

“There's no schedule to being a pilot vehicle driver either, the job could be ready to go this afternoon,” she says.

Christine works very closely with the truck drivers; their main focus is keeping the load and everyone on the road safe.

“I’ve always liked driving, but this job gives me another perspective due to the big responsibility of it,” she says.

“This job isn’t just about sitting in a seat and driving, it’s about navigating large loads on bridges, narrow roads and traffic.”

But just like every job, there are some

aspects of being a pilot vehicle driver that don’t sit right with Christine.

“Truckies aren’t respected which is first of all upsetting, and no one knows much about the pilot vehicle driver’s role. We’re unknown, so that’s my first problem,” she says.

To Christine, pilot driving is a role that desperately needs more consistency and acknowledgement.

“There are two associations that represent us here in Australia. I’ve worked with both, I find that they’re not very helpful and don’t promote themselves enough,” she says.

“There’s a lack of recognition. Learner drivers aren't even taught to share the roads

with trucks or oversized vehicles.

“There's been some form of wide load escort on the roads for more than 60 years now, and yet nobody understands the role of the pilot and sharing the road with an oversized load.”

Off the road, Christine is just as relentless. Her vehicle doesn’t just advertise her work, but sparks conversations everywhere she goes, supermarket carparks included. People ask what she does and she explains. Every conversation is education.

“I'll do whatever I can for this industry, I’m very passionate about it,” she says.

“I think the role needs a national campaign so it can be marketed across the country. I’ve

pushed for it. This job isn’t as simple as it looks, it’s a vital service.”

But long before pilot vehicles, Christine carved out a career in media and becoming an ABC correspondent.

I didn’t even know I could write until my 30s,” she laughs.

Off she goes!

Encouragement was scarce back then, but she kept at it. She then moved to Port Lincoln to work as a freelancer, “with an emphasis on free”.

She’s also written a book called, ‘Cover to Cover’ which is up on Amazon, and while her health was down, she put pen to paper and wrote 10 full books. Currently she’s working on a trilogy children’s story about milk crates.

“I’ve done a bit of everything,” she jokes.

“I’ve done pub work, office work, prawn trawlers, worked on cattle stations and now I'm an oversized pilot, but that doesn't mean I'm a fat flyer.”

As well as being a professional pilot vehicle driver, a published author and much more, Christine is also a breast cancer survivor, proving she’s not only a woman with many

“People will say, ‘oh but you’re a girl’, who cares. I would have rather been a mechanic than a secretary, but it wasn’t done in my day”

“So now I say go out and chase it.”

She says there will always be comments, sideway looks and assumptions, but she admits, the culture is getting better.

At 75, Christine is out there keeping roads safe and holding space for loads that keep Australia moving, and she’s proud of what she does.

So next time, keep a look out on your streets and highway, because you may not always see her, but just remember, big loads won’t move without her.

KENNY

Mitchell Daly’s 2013 Kenworth Director Series T900 rolled into the Tooradin Truck Show and he wasn’t expecting it to come home with gold

Words: Tiane Gavillucci

Images: Mitchell Daly

The rig won first place in the ‘PM5 – 10 years to 20 Years’ category

This Kenny took home the win!

All it needed was a wash to get the dust and bugs off along with a bit of tyre shine, then it was off.

On the way there a drizzle of rain threatened to undo hours of Mitchell Daly’s polishing prep, but he gave it a good old shammy when he got there.

Mitchell’s 2013 Kenworth Director Series T900 usually spends a bit of time in the shed but was taken out specifically for the Tooradin Truck Show, rolling in looking as good as new.

Painted up in blue and white, a dash of silver and embellished in light blue scrollwork, it doesn’t take too much for this rig to turn heads.

“The truck’s all original,” Mitchell says. “It has a history of carting milk, then we bought it when it was up for sale five years ago.”

“It’s number two out of 50 Director Series made. The original owner was Gary Forrester from Leongatha.

“These days it doesn’t do a lot really, it's a more of a toy and spends a bit of time in the shed.”

Mitchell admits that although it doesn’t do too much now, every couple of months he’ll load a bit of produce for one of his mates –Kelly Durkin, into Sydney or Brisbane.

At the end of the Tooradin Truck Show, winners were announced, but Mitchell wasn’t expecting to hear his truck be named.

The Director Series took home first place under the ‘PM5 – 10 years to 20 Years’ category, news Mitchell was quite overwhelmed about.

“I’ve always loved the truck’s paint scheme. It’s got a few things that set it apart like its traditional doors and its big 16-inch air cleaners. All that stuff you can't get any more on a new 909,” Mitchell says.

“The vehicle has an original engine, diffs and gearbox with 1.4 million kilometers on the clock.”

But this isn’t the first time the truck has come home with gold, placing first for ‘Best Owner Driver’ at Casino last year.

So, what does the future look like for the much-loved Director Series?

“I'll never sell it, nah – it will stay here forever,” Mitchell says. “I’ll just continue doing

my little weekend trips with it here and there.”

His love for trucks run deep, and it’s hardly surprising when you look at Mitchell’s background.

He runs the workshop at Transall Motors, a family business owned by his mum and dad. He started there at 16 years old, and now, he’s 34.

“It’s been a long time. The business does own a few trucks also,” he says.

Currently, the workshop is doing up a couple of older trucks as we speak; an S2 1974 model, a grey ghost and a K200 Big Cab to transport sprint cars around.

And while those rigs are well and good, nothing compares to the Director Series, and how tall it stood at Tooradin, taking home a well-deserved win.

Although it's at work here, the truck usually spends a lot of time in the shed

It’s a day of bringing truck lovers together while raising money for mental health at the annual Pioneer Timber Cutters Show

The Black Dog Institute was chosen due to a club member losing their son to mental health

The big day started with a raffle run, where attendees stop along the road to the Pioneer Timber Cutters Show to purchase tickets to help raise funds for the Black Dog Institute.

“We’re a big supporter of this organisation, as there are people in our community currently dealing with poor mental health,” Pioneer Timbers Cutters group president Jamie Darlington says.

“One of the members of our club unfortunately lost their son to suicide as well, so this is important to us.”

The club managed to raise $1,400 from this year’s run, money that will go towards supporting mental health and honouring members loved ones lost too soon.

After the run was done, the participating trucks gathered at Kingswood Sports’ carpark in NSW to share their metal greatness with the crowd, and brave the rain.

“It was horrible weather,” Jamie says.

“Rain like that can make or break an event, so numbers should have been higher. But we filled up a room of people and had some great looking trucks to go with that, so we’re still happy.”

And what trucks they were. From Sunny Warby’s B model Mack to classic Dodges

and A model Chevs from the 1920s, the display threw visitors back in time.

Jamie says the faces of kids and adults alike made the day worth it, as they marvelled at trucks built without plastic, air conditioning, or modern luxuries.

“The kids love it,” he says. “They don’t understand how the old vehicles worked back in the day and the way things used to be done.”

“At these machinery shows, enthusiasts get to educate them on what it was like back in my day.”

The Pioneer Timber Cutters show brings a community together, raises money for important causes, and celebrates an era of machinery that feels increasingly rare.

But the excitement doesn’t stop there. Jamie and his team will soon be curating an antique truck display.

The club is gearing up for an even bigger showcase at Truckfest, happening on March 21 and 22 at Clarendon Showgrounds.

“It’s going to be all about trucks this time, no cars, just a proper homage to the past,” Jamie says.

So, if you didn’t make it to the Pioneer Show this year, don’t worry, Truckfest is just around the corner.

Julz Neville champions traditional signwriting, passing on a rare craft truckies still deeply value

Words: Tiane Gavillucci

Julz stands with the Kenworth being lined and scrolled

Julz Neville only needs a brush, a steady hand and a vehicle to decorate to make her customers happy.

Julz grew up in the small NSW country town of Orange, and at 17, was unsure what to do for work.

Following a career teacher’s advice, she picked up her first paintbrush in 1990 and began a work experience placement with a local signwriter, which turned into an apprenticeship by the end of the week.

She left school at the end of Year 10 and never looked back.

“Back then, they would teach you how to use paint, whereas today at TAFE, if you’re lucky enough to get an apprenticeship in signwriting, it's all about vinyl laying and digital printing,” she says.

“They don't really touch on hand painted theory which is disappointing.”

Julz enjoys the old school way of signwriting, and says vinyl isn’t always the best way to go.

“Vinyl doesn’t last very long. Because trucks

are mostly diesel, they create a lot of soot on the trucks, and mixed with them going up the highways, they get quite dirty,” she says.

“The trucks usually get washed down with really nasty chemicals and boiling hot water. Enamel paint – which I use for my normal work – doesn’t stand up to that harsh chemical, so I have to use two pack urethane paints.

“Truckies are salt of the earth people and they really like tradition. I guess that’s why they prefer to go with somebody who still does old school paintings, instead of using vinyl.”

Julz says if kids are keen to learn how to do things the way she learned to do them, it’s not as easy – they would have to watch YouTube or participate in workshops.

“I occasionally run a beginner’s workshop on pinstriping, signwriting and lettering as a way to pass on my experience and knowledge because there's no other way really,” she says.

“I think it's really important for it to be

This Kenworth is getting the full line and scroll treatment
Hand painted aged lettering & pinstriping for a 1959 Dodge pickup truck

passed on to the younger generation.”

Working this job for almost four decades, Julz’s weeks are anything but predictable.

One day its linework and scrolls on a horse float, the next, distressed lettering on an early Chev or Ford pickup truck, and then the day after it’s pinstriping and gold leaf work on a modern Harley Davidson.

And now, people are inquiring for their big rigs – which is relatively new for Julz – but she’s loving it.

And although Julz adores her job, it wasn’t a skill that she suddenly developed overnight.

You need the right paint, the right brushes and a lot of practice. Straight lines, curves, designs. It all comes down to control.

“Doing scrollwork is quite difficult to learn,” she says. “They’re very tight and circular with a flick at the end. It takes time to get that technique down. It’s very different to pinstriping work.”

Aussie trucks – although a beast of their own – carry scrollwork that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

“The scrollwork you have seen on semis are very unique to Australia,” Julz says.

“They’re very Aussie. You won’t see our scrolls in America. They do traditional pinstriping on their trucks, and that’s just never taken off here in Australia, ours are just completely different.”

If you’re like me, you’ll be wondering by now how Julz gets her lines so perfect.

Well, the scrolls are freehand and the pinstriping is all taped up due to the enormous size of the trucks.

“The trucks are so huge there's no way you could do that all by free hand, it would take you forever,” Julz laughs.

“If you look at all the trucks on the road, it doesn’t matter where in Australia, all signwriters do work in a similar way.

“We do use the fine line tape for pinstriping, but then everybody has their own style for their scrollwork. Most signwriters can look at a truck and know which signwriter decorated what, just from their style.”

And no matter the experience, or the

This stunning refurbished 2016 K200 Kenworth truck is getting lined and scrolled
Julz skills have been applied across many projects

number of years doing the job – mistakes will happen.

The quickest way to fix up a line that went a bit silly is easier than I thought. Julz says it’s as easy as pouring a bit of turps on a rag and wiping it off before it dries, and that’s it. Simple as that.

The job itself is lengthy. A full prime mover can take 25 to 30 hours, depending on detail. And then there’s the height.

“You have to set yourself up with some decent ladders and hopefully you’re not too scared of heights, which I'm thankfully not, only because I've been doing it for a long time,” she says.

“The challenge is balancing on a ladder as well as holding a can of paint and your brush while you work up the top of the cab.”

The truck that sticks with Julz the most is her first one – a restored Mack tipper, with simple black lines and scrolls.

“It was a simple job, but it was the day I realised okay, I actually can do this,” she says.

Julz bought her factory in Pakenham – keys

in hand a week before COVID lockdown hit.

“That was a struggle,” she says. “Before that, I worked out of my garage at home, but I had outgrown it. Owning the factory was a big step for me, and then the lockdown happened.”

Her husband helps where he can, mostly with the books, but the brush has always been Julz alone.

Looking ahead, her hopes are refreshingly grounded.

“I just hope people keep valuing hand lettering,” she says. “It’s a niche market, and I appreciate how truckies love tradition and like to stick with hand painted signage. I just hope that continues on.”

“I want to help inspire the younger generation to learn the trade as well. I want to keep growing and ultimately get better and better.”

And as long as there are trucks rolling down Australian highways wearing hand-painted scrolls instead of peeling stickers, Julz can keep the tradition, with her brush in hand, one line at a time.

Kids had the opportunity to get behind the wheel at the Kid’s N Rigs Truck Show in New Zealand, where money was raised for those in need

600 people took the chance to be driven around in a truck at the Kid's N Rigs Truck Show

Do you have a kid that dreams of becoming a truckie?

On February 7, the kids of Richmond, New Zealand were in luck. They had the opportunity not many others have getting behind the wheel of a truck.

Children waited their turn to climb into the cab for an unforgettable joy ride at the Kid’s N Rigs Truck Show and boy did they love it.

“The kids were so happy, but I think there were more smiles on the parents faces to be honest. A staggering amount of 600 people jumped aboard for those rides,” event organiser Tamara Eggers says.

What started as a simple idea has quickly become one of New Zealand’s most heartwarming community events, with the first ever Kid’s N Rigs show rolling to life in February 2025, built by a small, but determined, team who simply wanted to create something special.

It was no big budget blueprint, just a shared belief that families deserved something uplifting – and free – in a time where money is tight.

“We don't get a lot of free events around here, and with the cost of living rates it's quite hard for families to get out of the house,” Tamara says.

“So, it was great to see the families enjoying a day out. It was such a good day filled with so much positivity.”

This year around 130 trucks lined up, polished to perfection and ready to impress the judges.

Not only were big rigs stealing the spotlight,

but speedway cars, sitting alongside gleaming motorbikes and all sorts of fire engines drew in a crowd of over 5,000. It was a celebration of machinery in every form.

But beyond the chrome and category prizes, Kid’s N Rigs carries a much deeper purpose.

Each year, the team choose a new candidate for the fundraising to go toward. This year, money was raised for the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) and a local girl, Rilee Wright who has a rare form of cancer.

“The funds will go to her family to help with travel costs and anything else that she may need, to help support them,” Tamara says.

Yes, the day is about trucks, kids and fun. But it’s also about rallying around families and supporting the community.

Running something of this scale isn’t easy. Behind the scenes are countless hours of organising, coordinating drivers, sponsors, judges, safety measures and travel.

“It’s actually quite hard to put this show together, there’s so much effort that goes into this,” Tamara says.

“The team, Darren Letham, Grant Wilkins, Chris Webby, Olivia Pomeroy and I are just so happy that we are able to organise an event that people can enjoy, and one that our sponsors can come on board for. We seriously couldn't do it without them.”

For a few hours and the Kid’s N Rigs Truck Show, the worries of rising bills and busy lives fade into the background, and the event brings smiles and support to the New Zealand community. And it looks like this is only the beginning.

From day dot, Riley Mead has been immersed in the world of transport - thanks to his dad and grandpa - so it was no surprise when he wanted a truck of his own as a teenager.

Now with a career in transport, Riley owns not one, but two 1978 International 3070s.

Late night find

It wasn’t planned; in fact, it was more of a coincidence.

“I wasn’t really looking for another truck at the time,” Riley says. “I was working night

shifts and was just flicking through Facebook. Then I saw it.”

"It" was a 1978 International 3070 from Shepparton, right there on Marketplace.

“My grandfather's an interstate truck driver, he just turned 70 this year,” he says.

“He was always raving on about a 3070 from Shepparton, so I sent him a photo of it, and he said, ‘that’s it, that's the truck.’”

And that was all it took.

Unlike some Facebook finds, this rig was already in good nick. It had been restored by the previous owner and presented well. But what really hooked Riley was its originality.

“I don't know too much about its history yet. That's something I'm wanting to find out,” he says.

“It’s very original. It’s still got the build sheet in it from when it was built. All the hoses and everything are from 1978.”

And that kind of authenticity is unfortunately not too common in today’s age.

These days, the truck lives a slightly easier life.

“At the moment, the truck’s a bit of a hobby for me. It’s more of a toy,” he says.

“Like most blokes, I'm in the historic truck

The truck is used as more of a toy these days for Riley
This International was found on Marketplace

This was Riley’s first truck

Mechanically, it does the job The new rear suspension was fitted

club and bring the rig to shows. But if I do want to work with it, luckily, I’ll be able to.”

Riley has gone through the mechanics of it properly.

“I am slowly building it and have done a fair

bit,” he says. “The gearbox was taken out and I rebuilt that myself. It was a 15 direct box; I made it a 15 overdrive. I’ve just done a lot of general preventative maintenance on it.”

So now it seems to be mechanically sound

This truck introduced Riley into the world of trucks

and looks like a good old vintage showpiece. What more could a truck lover want?

A teenage dream

Long before that Marketplace scroll, there was another 1978 International 3070, and Riley bought this one while he was still in high school as his first ever truck.

“When I was in Year 8, I wanted to start my heavy diesel apprenticeship,” he says.

“My grandfather and father said they would buy me this truck and that I can work on it if was something I really wanted to do. They thought it would be a good start for me.”

Currently, the truck is a work in progress.

“It’s a lot of money. It doesn't look pretty, but mechanically it's bright,” he says.

Bought off a farmer years ago, the truck carries clues to a past Riley is still piecing together.

“Underneath, the truck’s all orange. Going through photos online, it looks like it's an old TNT truck perhaps, not 100 per cent certain.

“But it's the same orange, and it's got the

same sort of paint scheme under the white on the cab.”

For Riley, it’s all a bit of mystery, but that’s the fun of it.

Preserving old trucks and carrying on his grandfather’s trucking legacy is all that matters, perhaps so much so, that even he will pass that love onto his own children one day.

Still a work in progress, but looking good

TOYOPET

After decades hidden in a dusty shed, this ’63 Stout gets back to work

Words: Tiane Gavillucci

Images: Bryce Eishold

The Toyopet Stout was built in 1963

The year Bryce Eishold was born, was the same year his future truck would be deregistered and hidden away to collect dust.

The 1963 Toyopet Stout sat parked in a machinery shed for 23 years in East Gippsland, until one day, Bryce was chasing a story of his own.

“I’m a journalist and go out to farms to speak to farmers about their agricultural enterprises,” he says.

“I was out at this farm one day in East Gippsland and was talking about my love of old vehicles, when this gentleman, Geoff Johnston was telling me about his father's Toyota he had down in the shed.”

Thinking it may have been a HiLux, Bryce was curious as to what remained hidden away in that shed, so he grabbed a mate and had a look.

Then he took it home.

Despite sitting in a shed for the best part of around 30 years, the truck was largely original. It had clocked only 28,000 miles. The paint is original, and the tray was rebuilt in the 70s.

“It shows a lot of patina,” he says. “But it was sitting in a machinery shed for years of its life so that’s expected.”

The Stout had worked hard in its first life. It was one of the first two Stouts delivered to a dealership in Bairnsdale and purchased new by grazier Renwick (Graeme) Coverdale Johnston who farmed Walpa.

From ’63 to ’95, the Stout was used as a farm vehicle until Graeme’s death. His son, Geoff Johnston used the truck for the next two years, before deregistering it in 1997 and later parking it in the shed.

Geoff says his father would drive the Stout from Walpa to Yalloum Power Station once or twice a year where he would purchase 1.5 tonnes of coal briquettes to power a dairy on a neighbouring farm.

The light truck would also carry two tonnes of superphosphate from the Lindenow South and Fernbank railway stations.

Graeme used hungry boards made from old timber floors to maximise the truck’s carrying capacity.

After Geoff’s father passed away, the Toyota

Despite showing some patina, it’s looking good for an old rig

The

got tucked away in the shed, but it was never fully forgotten.

“Every so often, Geoff would start the truck up – I think once every couple of months –just to keep things ticking over - and that's probably why it still runs in the condition it’s in,” Bryce says.

Getting it roadworthy was refreshingly straightforward.

“It was minimal work, we didn't really need to do much,” he says.

“Some minor rust removal on the floorplans, an overhaul of the brakes, a new exhaust and a set of new all-terrain tyres.”

Today, Bryce uses the Stout for a bit of everything. To collect firewood, move a bit of hay, general garden things or moving and carrying around parts.

“Geoff sold it to me on one condition, that it wouldn’t be ratted out or chopped up for parts,” Bryce says.

“I had every intention to honour that. I want to make sure that we kept it in original

condition and used it as a workhorse, which it is now. It carries a really good load.”

“There’s no point keeping these things in a shed.”

So, the old Toyota works for a living once again. “It’s a column shift manual and can sit on 100km/h, but it’s comfort zone is closer to 50 km/h.”

Bryce’s appreciation for old vehicles was born long before the Stout came along. He grew up spending time on his grandparents’ farm in Moulamein in southern New South Wales, tinkering alongside his grandpa.

“I've always had an interest in old farm machinery and old cars,” he says. “I spent a lot of time at my grandparents’ house.”

And he has them to thank for his find of the Toyopet Stout too.

The light truck hasn’t been stripped of its working clothes and over restored into something it never was, but remains a working relic, still doing the job it was built to do, decades later.

Glenelg

GOODIES

Vintage pieces of all kinds rolled up for the seventh Glenelg Vintage Machinery Rally, raising money for their local hospital

If you had been longing for a chance to slow down and relive the past, the Glenelg Vintage Machinery Club’s 2026 Rally was the place to be on January 31 to February 1, 2026.

The Hamilton reenactment group has become a regular attraction, setting up tents and staging mock battles that stop kids and adults alike in their tracks.

Tractors of yesteryear stole the show

There was a lot going on this year with classic cars, stationary engines, a vintage tractor pull, motorbikes, stalls, as well as a spit roast dinner to top it all off.

Over a couple of hundred people came through the gates, helped by “perfect weather” as club president David Goodland explains it.

Displays spilled out in every direction –about 20 motorbikes rolled in from Hamilton, 20 motor boats put on a show, and dozens of cars of all eras lined up, including some of the oldest vehicles many visitors had ever seen. Tucked among them were three trucks, modest in number but big on character.

“One standout was an International V8 petrol truck that had done bogie drive,” David says.

“We even had our truck there; it’s a Freightliner on a red plate.”

David was taken aback by what he thought was a real showstopper, a real old McDonald tractor, with a single cylinder puffing out these big black smoke rings.

Moments like that make the rally what it is. Where else do you see smoke rings drifting over a paddock while, just metres away, medieval reenactors clash swords behind a wooden fence?

“Seven years ago, this rally didn’t exist,” David says. “It all started with a group of enthusiasts with antique machinery, motors and tractors.”

“I joined a year after it began, but the rally has since taken on a life of its own.”

At its core, the rally is about bringing machines and people together.

“It’s a perfect time to get your old machinery out of the shed and show it off to people that are actually interested to come and have a look,” David says.

And it doesn’t end there. The Glenelg Vintage Rally is a not-for-profit event, with proceeds going straight back into the community.

Each year, funds are donated to the local hospital in Heywood. This time around, the tally was around $2,800.

“This rally benefits the community as we’re supporting a local cause,” David says.

“We’re looking after the health of those in Heywood, that’s why it’s important.”

So next year come down to Heywood to see engines breathing again after years of being tucked away, smoke curling toward the sky, and to be surrounded by people who care enough to keep the old machines alive.

Sweltering SHOW TIME

Our intrepid truck lover Warren Aitken packed the camera bags and headed to Koroit to kick off the new year

Words & Images | Warren Aitken

WAnother long-term resident of the back wall parking lot is the ever-impressive Lane Transport Fleet

ell folks, it looks like we are underway for my 2026 Truck Show schedule. Notice I said ‘MY’ 2026 Truck Show Schedule, seeing as there has already been a couple of shows in the early part of January, but I missed those and decided to break my new year cherry with a trip down to one of my regular haunts, The Koroit truck show in Victoria.

The Koroit Truck show has been a staple of my truck show haunts for quite a few years now, it has always had a fantastic turn out, it is well supported by a bounty of altruistic sponsors and the characters down in Koroit make it a must see on the truck show list. Sadly, I missed it last year because it conflicted with my impending nuptials, but any show would have played second fiddle to that day. So this year, I made sure I placed my wedding anniversary plans outside the window of the Koroit show and took the big tin taxi down south to see if the show was still knocking it out of the park.

It was great to be back at the Koroit Truck Show and like every year the standard was right up there.

It is never easy for entrants when this show is a regular for at least three of the invitees that competed in the National Show n Shine competition in Brisbane last year. It is kind of like going to play a game of back yard cricket

down at the Valley District Cricket Club (home to the likes of Matthew Hayden, Allan Border and Usman Khawja) ie – the level of competition is right up there.

If I am going to wax lyrical about the virtues of the Koroit show, I also need to be fair and call a spade a spade when needed. 2026 was a tough one for the Koroit Truck Show. It was the first time in many years the team missed out on breaking the triple figure mark for entrants. If we tallied the trucks based purely on pre-entries then it would have been a stella year once again but unless you’re in politics, we don’t fudge numbers for appearance’s sake.

There are several reasons for a lower turnout in both trucks and people at this year’s event. One of those being how tough times are in transport these days. Numbers are down across the board at many rural shows as people either can’t afford the trip or can’t afford the trucks not to be working. I spoke to several operators across the day and many of them repeated the same rhetoric. ‘We wanted to bring more trucks, but we couldn’t afford not to have them working, if the work’s there we need to snap it up’. It is a harsh reality of the times we live in.

The biggest factor in the diminished turnout however was that harsh mistress Mother Nature. Almost two dozen trucks that

had planned on attending this year’s event were called into action helping with carting hay to fire-affected farmers around Victoria. Those heroes of the highway were out rescuing the livelihoods of hard-hit farmers, and no one can begrudge them for that.

Mother Nature also dealt another blow with the forecasted weather in Koroit due to peak well above 40 degrees on show day. This hit the event hard on several fronts. Let’s be honest, no one wants to be out polishing in Death Valley-style heat, much less dragging their families around in that stifling weather. The option of skipping the event and lapping up all the aircon in the comfort of your own home is something many did choose, understandably.

It also had a significant impact on the Koroit Truck Show Committee’s planned events as well. The inflatable kingdom that is normally packed to the brim was only at a whimper. Which was good because the heat was

playing havoc with the equipment and in the end, there was no blue pill big enough to help keep the slides and bouncy castle up once we surpassed the 40 degree mark.

The amazing ladies at the Flying Flamingo acrobatics club also succumbed to the conditions. Their incredible aerial agilities were on display early but in the end, it was just too damn hot.

KOROIT

When the horse influenza halted the ag show 20 odd years ago, Koroit swapped hooves for horsepower — and never looked back

Words: Tiane Gavillucci

The sun soon started scorching in Koroit and whilst it may have kept a few people inside in the air conditioning, there was still a pretty good turnout for the 2026 event

It started with a problem no one saw coming. Back in 2007, the horse influenza shut down the Croydon Agricultural Society’s annual show just weeks out.

Event organiser Graeme Morris says horses were no longer allowed to travel, and for a small town that loved this show weekend, they couldn’t just make it a write off.

“I thought, if we can't have horses, why don't we have some horsepower instead?” he says.

It was a last-minute idea, but it would work. They put together a show n’ shine and by the next year, the horses were back. But the trucks were missed.

Truckies called Graeme asking for another truck show, so the committee listened. Word spread, it got bigger by the year and since then, the Koroit Truck Show hasn’t stopped growing.

Nearly two decades on, and that idea has evolved into one of the region’s most loved truck gatherings – even when the weather tries its best to shut it down.

This year’s show arrived under a brutal forecast of 40 degrees summer heat, which scared off more than a few entrants.

“A few people rang me during the week and said they were sorry, but they had to stay home because it was just too hot,” Graeme says.

“Still, quite a few people came, but they left nearly just as quickly. The weather played a big part on the day.”

Still, the trucks turned up, and they turned heads.

From farm trucks to late-model flash rigs

to older workhorses with stories etched into every panel, the grounds held a mix.

The judging reflected that diversity too, with around 13 categories covering everything from near-new trucks to seasoned veterans, a coveted Top 5, and the all-important Rig of the Show.

And then there’s the cause behind it all. Each year, the Koroit Truck Show partners with a charity. Over the years, the show has supported causes from breast cancer research to the Kidney Foundation, and this year carried special weight, with funds directed towards the Colin McKenna Brain Tumour Foundation.

“We've decided to add any money we can spare into that particular legacy,” Graeme says.

“This show is great for the town. It brings a lot of people in and ends up booked out.”

Motel rooms are full, pubs are buzzing and bakeries are flat out. The small country town swells with visitors and families who can enjoy the other parts of the show’s entertainment also.

It’s a day where dads disappear into truck talk, kids bounce between family entertainment, and everyone finds something to enjoy — whether they know a bonnet from a bull bar or not.

“You can bring the whole family along, and everybody ends up enjoying the day,” he says.

Sparked from a single thought nearly 20 years ago, no horses? No worries. Koroit found something even better to brighten up its little town, and it’s been rolling strong ever since.

been pipped by the unbeatable Wilson’s Warriors in 2024, I was optimistic this year I could find myself back on a team and was aiming to topple the Kings at this year’s event. Imagine my dismay when I went looking for the medieval tug of war contraption that dominated the landscape out front of the prize trailers and found no sign. Through my tears of despair, I learned that, like the attendance figures, the Tug of War was a victim of the forecast extreme weather. I guess over-heated truckies, exerting extra energy just wasn’t a feasible insurance risk. Mark my words I expect it back in 2027 team. Those few paragraphs may make it sound a little discouraging but please don’t read too much into it. The fact is there were a lot of mitigating factors that are beyond the organiser’s control and weather, and emergencies are two pretty compelling ones. The energy from Richard and his team of tireless volunteers ensured that the vibe of the show stayed upbeat and positive, even when we were melting like ice cream in a sauna.

Back to those that braved the conditions and rocked up for the day. There were still 90 plus trucks that rolled into the small town’s showgrounds on Saturday morning, joining the handful of trucks that had rocked up on Friday and set up swags to see them through the weekend. When I arrived at around 7am, I was cold

and shivering, yea you heard me. After lunch it was over 40 and roasting but at 7am the cold sea breeze had me looking like a human popsicle.

Anyway, my arrival timed in nicely with the Midfield Group transport convoy rolling into the grounds, some impressive Scanias, peppered amongst a line of empowering Kenworth’s. The Warrnambool-based meat processing group appeared to have their entire transport division shined up and turned out. It was not just me they impressed, the company took out a couple of awards this year, Best Prime Mover 0-1 year and also the Best Fleet award.

Their entrance was quite the sight, and after patiently watching their team roll in, I went walkabout to find a vantage point to enjoy the rest of the trucks rolling in. On my travels I found the always impressive Cornwill Family, with a fleet of three trucks, a cast of about 10 and even their own cleaning parts trailer, all set up in their standard spot in the back corner. It will come as no surprise to hear the dedicated team took home another bundle of well-earned trophies. Including the coveted King Rig trophy with their incredible Dynamite Kenworth SAR.

As if their impressive rigs weren’t enough, sitting next to them were the Whitehaul Transport trucks. Last time I was here they were debuting an impressive T909 and B-double set, this year the T909 was still there,

and I swear it looked like it was still brand new.

My personal favorite fleet went to the incredible Morris Transport team. These impressive machines spend most of their lives turd herding the back blocks of Australia and still managed to rock up looking brand new

Morris Transport, a company that previously had one of the coolest DAFs waving the company banner, this year was represented by an outstanding array of Paccar products. C509, T659, T909, hell they almost had the entire Kenworth sales brochure on display.

And yes, like many shows the Kenworth Bug dominates the landscape but down in Koroit the manufacturer putting up the next best showing was the European equivalent, Scania. It has a very strong presence down south and as such there were some fantastic rigs on hand. With the Best European Award going to Bartlett and Sons’ impressive Scania R660.

The numbers may have been down, but those that did make it on the day sure set the bar pretty high. The Koroit Truck show has always been a family day out, the added features like the motorbike display, classic cars, and historic trucks were all present and there to enjoy. The heat didn’t deter the legendary woodchopping competition either, they were sweating bullets over by the food area, but they still put on a tough show.

We can’t forget the impressive Factory FMX team either, I do love seeing these lunatics in action. But….. mother nature once again threw a spanner in the works. They tried their best but as if it was deliberate on mother nature’s

behalf, every time they were scheduled to perform up came the wind. And seeing how high they were getting, the extreme jumps became a little too extreme. Personally, I didn’t want them landing on my camera, so I was ok with a more subdued approach.

As is always the case at the Koroit Truck Show, the prize giving is always an interesting event. I am not talking about who wins, I am talking about what they win. The prizes on offer are incredible, with a huge list of sponsors chipping in and watching kids go up to collect their parent’s prizes is a laugh when they have neither the strength, nor appendages to carry their loot off stage.

It was taken to even larger extreme this year thanks to the amazing custom trophies erected by committee member Leigh ‘Buddha’ Campbell. His Elite 5 trophies, and the gigantic Rig of the Show award were just incredible.

So now, as I sit at the airport awaiting my cramped seat home, joyfully exhausted and with another 20 odd thousand steps clocked up on my Nikes, I can reflect. Yes, the numbers were down. Yes, the heat was debilitating and yes there wasn’t a single Western Star on show, but did I enjoy it? Yea I still did. Full credit to all of those that put this event together. They maintained the joyous atmosphere, even though I am sure they were wiped out as well. Good show, under extreme conditions. See ya next year Koroit.

Slow growth for January

Isuzu, Hino, Fuso, Kenworth and Volvo have started 2026 as the top five selling brands in the latest T-Mark sales data released by the Truck Industry Council.

An overall total of 2,464 heavy, medium, and light trucks and commercial vans were sold in January.

The results show the market is starting the year slower than 2025 which had 2,786 in sales. Worth noting, January 2025, was the second-best January on record, having fallen just 133 sales behind the record set in January 2024 of 2,919 sales.

Heavy Vehicles – Monthly Sales

he old saying goes, ‘never shop hungry’. For obvious reasons, there are major downsides and consequences. Shopping hungry leads directly to poor choices and a trolley full of diabetes.

Another old adage is ‘never shop angry’ for fear of similar poor choices, or trolleys full of regret and no return clauses. However, there are always exceptions. Cinnabon is the exception to the never shop hungry claim. Because there’s always room for Cinnabon and when it comes to exceptions for ‘never shop angry’ I have tracked down a 120-ton rated exception.

Down in the tiny Victorian town of Wangaratta is where I found Luke Keam and the striking green, gold and white Mack Superliner that is the end product of an angry shopping spree.

Whilst the origins of this mighty Mack may have manifested from frustration and discontent, the angry shopping spree has delivered an epic truck and an extremely happy shopper.

Keep in mind I am using a fair bit of artistic license when I credit this creation solely to an impulse angry reaction. There was obviously a lot more going on behind the scenes, however, to quote another old saying, ‘never let the truth get in the way of a good story’.

By way of background, Luke Keam had been actively looking for a new truck, and this whole adventure began because he had been approached by a salesman with the offer of a build spot for just the kind of truck he wanted.

It was down the line a bit and would ideally be rocking up after the next harvest season, so Luke jumped at the offer and got back to doing what he does best – working his butt off.

“We got busy, fertiliser season went through, and I figured that truck will be almost due,” Luke says. “When I rung up, I found it didn’t even have a build date. I was very disgruntled at the time,” states Luke – well he used words with less letters, but my artistic license won’t let me print those.

“So, I walked down the road, into John Templeton’s office at CMV Wodonga, said right, I want this this and this, can you build it? I was shopping very angry.”

John’s reply was like any good salesman –‘Yes, Yes, Yes, and let’s build it’.

It was the reaction Luke was after and as his anger dissipated his excitement and enjoyment levels skyrockets.

“I had an awesome time with this build, I knew we weren’t going to make it for harvest, so we just took our time. I wanted a big truck and dealing with John, and then Ryan at BlingHQ, it was really good.”

We should jump back to the angry shopping bit and delve into exactly what Luke was shopping for and also why.

The why is fairly simple. Luke needed a new truck to add to the ever-increasing workload of the family company he started back in 2015 – Keam Fertilisers.

“I’ve grown up around trucking, it has always been a part of my life,” Luke says.

“As a kid I was 100 per cent a truck nut. I remember when I was real young Dad was doing stock, so when I was good, I’d get to go with him. I remember an old T650, and I also remember a K100E too.”

Luke’s dad Allan ran his own trucks as well, beginning with a Volvo body truck carting local produce, then getting his own Kenworth K100E and semi, to move greater volumes of produce.

Allan ensured his sons formative trucking years were stacked with learning experiences, from stock to produce, linehaul to float work, and let’s not forget the mixture of working as a company driver as well as owner driver years.

Luke got to experience the learning curve of trucking from a very young age. Eventually that road would lead to Luke partnering up with his dad carting logs around the Wangaratta area.

It wasn’t a direct route to a logging truck career for Luke, however. Like a lot of us, schooling was more a 10-week interruption between school holiday truck trips than it was a vessel of education. Hence Luke took the opportunity to ditch the school bells as soon as he could and undertook an automotive apprenticeship.

“I was doing light vehicles then, but the dealership closed up and it was really tough for a 4th year apprentice to get work in garages then. So, I ended up doing a bit of farm contracting. I was getting to drive all the

Parked amongst the tools of the Keams trade, the green scheme on the Superliner stands out

tractors and trucks around on the farm. I did that for a few years.”

Although he loved the farming life, and the agricultural lessons he absorbed would eventually play a major role in his life, at 21 he packed away his wellies and headed back to work for his old man, who was now running his own log trucks.

“I was in an old International S-Line, doing pine and then eventually moving onto hard wood” says Luke. “As that grew, we bought other trucks, Dad bought a Mack Trident brand new and we also had a 650 day cab.”

Now bridging the gap between Keam Transport Services carting logs and Keam Fertilisers specialising in carting supplying and spreading bulk products may seem like quite a leap, but the chasm narrows when you factor in the family’s ability to pivot with their work.

From the logging, Luke was starting to get a bit of grain work for the trucks on the side. The Mack Trident ended up getting stretched and retro fitted with a bunk and Luke soon became a permanent grain carter.

Soon enough, Allan was folding down the bolsters and hooking up to a tipper set and joining Luke in the harvest season.

“It was great, we’d both travel around together a lot, doing the season. Over time dad bought a couple other new trucks, including a Mack Superliner as well.”

All of this was in the early part of the 2010s, around the time Luke and his then partner Amy were welcoming their son Harrison into the world. Luke was feeling the effects of extended periods away and wanted more quality family time at home.

“I wanted to be home a bit more, with the family and was talking to a local bloke here in Wangaratta with a fertiliser business. He was looking to get out and I realised there really wasn’t anyone doing the whole deal. Selling the fert, carting the fert and spreading it. So, it all rolled into one and we decided to give it a go.”

“This was me going out on my own, but dad helped me out again. I bought my first spreader and dad leased me the old Mack and I got into it.”

Carting recycled glass out of Wangaratta down to Melbourne, then fertiliser back up, it would be a 3am start and back to the depot by lunch, where he’d swap hats and load up the spreader with the fertiliser he’d brought up and go fulfill the orders that had been coming in whilst he was on the road.

The successful concept grew quicker than the crops Luke was cultivating, and soon enough the business was accumulating more trucks, more spreaders and more drivers.

“After the first year the work just exploded. Originally the truck side of it was meant to be a fallback to keep us doing something if the

fertiliser and spreading was quiet – but it just got busier.

“It is a small community and people like that they can get it all taken care of with one call. Not having to call someone to buy the fertiliser, then another person to pick it up and another one to bring it out and spread it.”

2015 was the birth of Keam Fertilisers and within two years a second truck was added.

“We started with second hand trucks, every cent we were getting we put back into the company. The second truck was an old K104. Then we bought a 2nd hand K200 and also a 2nd hand Western Star.

“We were buying new trailers but towing it around with older gear. By 2020 we could see it was costing a fair bit to keep the trucks up to spec so when they released the Kenworth SAR Legends, I decided to order my first brand new truck. I was a big fan of the old school setup of the Legends, so it was an easy decision.”

The steady solidification of Keam Fertilisers and the steady increase of clients lead the need for more trucks and eventually led to

Luke has been loving his time behind the wheel of the big Mack, when he is getting out for the manual labour side of the job he finds himself feeling fresh and energised after hours behind the wheel

Luke’s angry shopping at CMV in Wodonga.

Obviously the bulldog brand had been part of Lukes DNA before, he leased the old Superliner of his dad to get the business up and running, as well as having quite an affiliation for the old Trident he had begun his grain carting career with.

“I’ve had Macks before, loved them. The Superliner out there (referring to the original Superliner parked outside that still waves the Keam flag on the road) – it was one of the last with a Cummins motor in it. So when I marched into John’s office, I knew what I wanted, laid it all out and John was awesome helping me get everything I wanted.”

That list of requirements revolved mainly around the decent wheelbase, and a heavy duty, big, truck.

“I didn’t get everything I wanted as it just wouldn’t work. I wanted the 62’ bunk but I also wanted the big pipes up the side. But, with that being an American sleeper they couldn’t alter

it. They could make it work with the 58’ bunk though.

“I was really impressed by the broad range of options when it came to setting up the Macks, especially with the sleepers. You can do so much with the interior and sizes.”

Another spec that was on Luke’s shopping list was the mid-rise roof, with the dovetail. Purely for cosmetic uniformity, knowing the truck would have a set of tippers behind it, Luke wanted the flow through look that would come with the mid-rise roof.

There were also a few options that John helped steered Luke towards, eg the Champion Bonnet that can now be factory specced on the Superliners.

“I knew nothing about them to be honest. I got shown some photos of the big square bonnet with square guards and square bonnet with the round guards. Which looked cool, John had another one he was building and he rung me one day when it was in and

said to say come down and have a look at this and as soon as I saw it, I said, yup order me one of those” laughs Luke.

When it came to dressing the new ride and fitting the fancy parts, Luke had pretty strong ideas about that to.

“Colours wise I’ve always like green. All the second-hand trucks we’ve bought have just happened to be green. The SAR Legend was the first truck we got to fully design the colours and lines. I spent hours with paper and pencils designing it.

“When I got to do it with the Mack, I decided to reverse the colours and just add some gold in as well. So, it’s the same setup as the Legend, but with more green.”

With the Big Mack getting built up in Mack’s Wacol factory the truck went off to Bel-Air for the paint job.

“The guys there were great, they’d sent me photos when they were lining it and let me make adjustments, so it suited the truck

better. They were really good.”

When it came to the exterior additions Luke had a few concepts that he knew were different but was pushing for anyway. And it was the team at IcePack Services and BlingHQ that ensured Luke got what he wanted.

“My first priority was seeing if we could do something about the exhaust cover on the driver’s side of the Mack, so John introduced me to Ryan at BlingHQ. Ryan is great at what he does, loves what he does and basically said to me ‘Mate we can do anything you want, I just need the time’ I told him I wanted this to be cool and left him with it.”

Now, armed with that information, look at the photos again. On the driver’s side the exhaust has a full cover over it, giving a three tank look to the Big Rig.

“We still have the cover, as there is a lot of heat around there and we weren’t entirely sure how a cover would go. But the way Ryan built it, we haven’t had any issues.”

On the passenger side you will notice the Icepack Services team have designed a similar cover for the side mounted Icepack system. Giving the truck a very universal look.

Obviously fixing the exhaust cover was just one item on the Bling HQ to-do list.

“Ryan has very good taste. After I met with him the list had gotten bigger, and I just left it with him. He knocked it out of the park though. I wanted a cool truck and that’s what I got.”

By the time it rolled out of Icepack Services Toowoomba, Bling HQ, Bel-Air and Mr Bullbars the truck had fulfilled every aspect of Luke’s wish list. It looked like perfection personified and the only thing left was to hook it up and see how the solid stick man would go with an idle left leg.

“I can’t fault the truck, especially the driveline when you are stuck in the Melbourne traffic and stuff.

There are a few brands wearing the Keam Fertiliser moniker, but the green stays prevalent through them all. The Big Mack was painted up in an opposite reflection of the other fleet trucks

“When I first drove it, I thought it was lugging to low, waiting too long to change. So, on an Adelaide run I left it in manual and did it myself. I reckon I made it worse.

“I was slower, and, in the end, I just switched back and let it do the work. I’m most impressed with how it handles the big weights. It doesn’t lose momentum; it just handles it with ease. Definitely makes my job easier.”

As much as Luke now appreciates the decisiveness and intuitiveness of the mDrive box, his enthusiasm also extends to the power and torque of the big MP10 motor.

“We’ve always up there with our weights and this truck just doesn’t feel any of it.”

I think it would be fair to say, as Luke summarises the end result of his reactionary angry shopping spree, that this outstanding truck, performs and presents perfectly and ‘shopping angry’ may not always be a bad thing.

The acquisition will expand United Rentals’ range of elevated work platforms. Image: An-T/stock.adobe.com

Elevated growth

United Rentals has grown its eet and footprint in Australia with the acquisition of an access equipment specialist

Global equipment hire company

United Rentals has announced it has acquired Australian aerial rental supplier Alfasi Hire.

The acquisition expands United Rentals’ general rental business providing customers with greater access to an extensive range of elevated work platforms (EWP) –including scissor, spider and boom li s – telehandlers, and forkli s.

United Rentals Australia and New Zealand regional vice president Neil Littlewood says a company like Alfasi Hire is key to United Rentals’ commitment to providing a one stop shop for customers’ rental

requirements across Australia.

“Alfasi is a highly respected business and has built strong relationships with its customers over 40 years,” Littlewood says.

“With a focus on servicing the construction and mining industries, its modern, state of the art machinery and highly experienced team has made them an industry leader.

“Bringing the Alfasi team together with the resources and expertise

United Rentals have as a global leader in the hire sector enables us to provide customers with increased support and access to a growing range of products and services.”

The announcement follows United Rentals’ acquisition of Royal Wolf in 2021, as well as Shore Hire and Orange Hire in 2024.

Littlewood says Alfasi Hire’s company values align with United Rentals’ commitment to providing great service, quality equipment, telematics, and innovative solutions for its customers.

“As United Rentals continues to enhance its capability across the country, customers can expect the same industry-leading standards that have made the company the largest equipment rental provider in the world,” he says.
