e winners of the Intertra c Awards 2026 have been announced at the Opening Ceremony of Intertra c Amsterdam. ey ranged from a practical solution for electric bicycle parking to a bre optic road sensing system and a platform for allowing vehicles to talk to each other.

e Green Globe Award, recognising environmental sustainability, was claimed by HR Groep Streetcare’s MB Air – the world’s rst CE-certi ed compressed-air bicycle parking-lift system.

e Inspiration Award winner was Deltabloc International’s Deltabloc TAM Technology, a bre optic sensing platform capable of monitoring tra c across 50km of road in real time. Meanwhile the User Experience Award went to TLEX Interchange by Monotch, a cloud-native engine for real-time, low-latency mobility data exchange. For its laser-driven, bre-optic road-marking system, Luxene won the ITSUP Startup Award.

Jury chairman Pieter Litjens, director of Dutch national safety organisation Crow, says: “It was great to see the combination of innovation, heartfelt presentations, and the inspiring nature of the people who are behind them.

“ ere are people behind each of these innovations who are inventing and making them. And they’re not only making them to make pro t or to sell something. ey are making these solutions because they believe in better, safer tra c, or a better world, or a sustainable surrounding. at’s what I like most.”

He praised the technology in the software and hardware solutions that the nominees produced. But he added: “I also liked the mix between high tech and also some low tech, very simple inventions that really make an impact – and can contribute to inclusivity in society.”

METROCOUNT INTRODUCES ROADPOD COUNTER

MetroCount is here to introduce the RoadPod VM, a permanently installed, surface-mounted tra ic counter designed for accurate, long-term vehicle classification and speed monitoring on live roads. According to the company, it can be set up in just 30 seconds. Using magnetometer sensing technology, the device captures vehicle counts, speed, length, direction, and gap or congestion data, providing detailed classification with minimal complexity.

Fully solar-powered and sealed to IP68 standards, the patented RoadPod VM operates continuously in all weather conditions and high-tra ic environments. The company states that, once installed, it delivers reliable, unattended data collection for years. This makes it ideal for permanent monitoring sites, network-wide performance programmes, and before-and-a er studies.

The RoadPod VM connects seamlessly to Atlyst, MetroCount’s cloud-based analytics platform, providing remote access to validated data, automated reporting, and long-term trend analysis. Engineers and planners can monitor sites in near real-time, compare historical trends, and support evidence-based decisions without the need for repeated site visits.

TomTom and CitiEU enable smarter mobility planning across Europe

Smarter mobility planning starts with reliable, high-quality data. To reduce congestion, improve traffic flow and design more efficient transport systems, cities need accurate insights into how people and vehicles move. Effective mobility strategies depend on understanding traffic patterns, identifying pressure points and turning data into actionable decisions.

TomTom and CitiEU are working together to support public authorities across Europe in this effort. CitiEU collaborates closely with municipalities and infrastructure stakeholders, bringing TomTom’s traffic data and analytics into real-world mobility projects. By combining global data expertise with local implementation, the partnership helps cities better understand and manage their transport networks.

This collaboration is already delivering results. CitiEU worked with Municipalities and regional public authorities, such as the Municipality of Verona, to provide TomTom data that supports urban planning and traffic management. Beyond city-level applications, the partnership also enables broader use cases.

These include accessibility analysis and transport planning for universities and research centres, to help them develop their European and UK projects. CitiEU has also delivered transport modelling projects, that incorporate TomTom data, for Italian highways, demonstrating how data can support both policy development and infrastructure monitoring.

A key component of this work is the TomTom MOVE portal, which provides accessible insights into traffic and mobility trends. By making data easier to visualize and apply, it supports decision-makers in developing more effective mobility strategies. Combined with CitiEU’s local consultancy expertise in transport modelling and big data, these tools help translate complex data into practical outcomes. With European cities investing heavily in mobility as part of post-pandemic recovery plans, access to reliable data is more important than ever. Together, TomTom and CitiEU are helping public authorities make informed decisions, enabling more efficient, sustainable and future-ready mobility systems.

DIGITISATION OF INFRASTRUCTURE IS AMAZING - IT’S POWERFUL

Transportation industry veteran and International Road Federation chairman Randy Iwasaki talks to Daily

and there are few more pressing topics in the freight industry than the shortage of professional drivers. Transportation industry veteran and International Road Federation chairman Randy Iwasaki moderated a panel this week on how connected and automated vehicles (C/AVs) could help bridge this gap.

If it’s drivers you need, then making C/AVs a viable part of the transport system may sound an obvious x. ere are practical di culties to overcome, but it is logical that the commercial transport space would be the rst to go for automation if they are short of truckers.

Next generation

“And then the truckers that you do have, do they really want to spend 300 days on the road and 65 days with their families?” asks Iwasaki. “If they do, that’s ne. But if they don’t, there may be an option to better utilise your skills in more urbanised settings - the last-mile drop in the middle of Manhattan or Paris or wherever. We need to gure out ways of fully utilising the existing workforce in the freight movement area to the best of their ability. And then also we need to generate future workforce to take their places.”

e experience that youngsters will have – in all sorts of areas of intelligent transportation, such as tra c or electrical engineering – will be very di erent from the one that someone a generation or two ago would have had: “ e next generation will deal with things like how to put policies together to fully utilise arti cial intelligence, how to use digital twins. Digitisation of infrastructure is amazing, it’s powerful.”

Iwasaki was formerly a director of California DoT (Caltrans), and executive director of the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA), where he was instrumental in deploying C/AVs. ere has always been a question over the large-scale feasibility of AVs. Big claims are always made for the technology and yet we still seem some way away from roll-out.

than a novelty

“’Five years from now’ has become 10!” he smiles. at said, driverless cars are doing more and more miles, both in test scenarios and on the road in real-world situations.

“And so it’s getting more and more re ned, they’re expanding out more and more,”

Iwasaki says. “I think the real question is, what’s the business model that will support that technology?”

He cites the example of Japan, where he has seen Navya shuttles running: “You’ve got elderly people with their little grocery baskets getting on, and it’s in mixed ow. It’s in a bus-only lane, and they get o where they need to get o to go home. And so it’s working in those locations.”

Customer sentiment towards C/AVs is improving elsewhere too. “People are trusting the technology, using it. You can see that with Waymo in San Francisco and Phoenix, where people are actually taking them,” Iwasaki concludes. “It’s more than just a novelty.”

VALTIR SEES NO BARRIER TO INNOVATION

Global roadway solutions innovator Valtir is showcasing a suite of infrastructure safety products. Headquartered in the US and with nearly 60 years of expertise, the company’s products are deployed across highways, rural roads, urban developments, and niche markets in more than 70 countries.

At Intertra ic, the spotlight will fall on three key innovations: the Guard EN, the Centra, and EuroTracc.

The Guard EN is a truck-mounted attenuator for stationary or moving support vehicles, tested to Speed Class 100 (CEN/TS 16786:2018). Its design incorporates two lightweight aluminium cartridges on a reusable steel frame with a 90° hinge for upright storage and transport.

The system absorbs rear-end impacts at speeds up to 100 km/h within the CEN standard. Key features include a powerassisted 90° li for compact storage, replaceable energy-absorbing cartridges, and adaptability to all EU homologation requirements.

Next is the Centra, a redirective, bidirectional crash cushion for hazards up to 610 mm wide, compliant with EN 13173:2010 and tested to 110 km/h, 100 km/h, and 80 km/h performance classes.

Its design features an impact head, frontal and intermediate diaphragms, and a freestanding backup structure, all connected via cable and thrie-beam panels. The open-frame, galvanised construction aids inspection and durability, and the CE-marked system is certified by an EU Notified Body.

Finally, the EuroTracc is a redirective, energy-absorbing crash cushion for uni- or bi-directional tra ic, tested to EN 1317-3. It shields fixed objects from 610 mm to 1,800 mm wide and is constructed from galvanised steel for long-life durability. Designed for the rigours of outdoor life, Whisper NB is manufactured from an innovative hydrophobic metamaterial that is designed from the polymer up. This provides for a lightweight durable material which elimates the the need for protective covers or moisture barriers. It o ers 8 to 12dB of absorption and 5-6dB in-situ reflection, passing impact and durability testing to EN 14388. In e ect it can attain similar acoustic outcomes as heavier products. Whisper NB is validated for a 50-year working life. It is also reuseable, can be recycled in post-industrial recycling systems, and is compatible with energy recovery systems. It carries a Type III Ecolabel (EPD).

This durable, recyclable solution allows producers to innovate with claddings and open-faced cassette designs using recycled materials. Whisper NB is incorporated in new noise barrier walls from Hatko Sound Barrier, 4Silence, and Panacor.

TomTom aims to launch a new tra c AI agent later in 2026, using the power of AI to help speed up information on tra c ows and problems.

TomTom’s long experience in navigation systems, maps and apps has seen it accumulate huge quantities of data on areas such as tra c patterns and how these have changed over the years.

e company also provides information to clients such

as vehicle manufacturers and other major actors in the ITS ecosystem, which feed back data to help TomTom re ne its products.

Now, the Dutch company is developing a tra c AI agent that will be able to talk to other AI agents being developed by companies such as Kapsch and PTV, to exchange information on tra c problems that will then be supplied to tra c control

centres. For example, if tra c conditions require timing changes to intersection tra c lights, the AI agents will talk to each other and then deliver a solution to dynamically manage light timings along a complete tra c corridor. e AI agent will be able to provide information to tra c management centre personnel in real time, and do so more swiftly than having a human run analysis

of problems. At present, TomTom is seeking feedback from industry partners and agencies regarding its new agent. “Before we take it to the market, we want to understand if there’s any key things we should add to it,” said Saurav Miglani, who leads TomTom’s segment marketing for the public sector.
