Siobhan Rocks, general manager –events, Prime Creative Media
BHP is proud to be the naming rights sponsor of the AIMEX 2025 Mining Pavilion – a premier platform that brings together the best of the mining industry across the Asia-Pacific region.
As one of the world’s leading diversified miners, BHP operates across multiple commodities and continents – from copper and iron ore to metallurgical coal, nickel and potash. Our operations span Australia, the Americas, and beyond, supplying the critical resources that support global infrastructure, energy systems, and economic growth.
AIMEX 2025, held in Adelaide in September, offers a valuable platform to demonstrate the breadth and impact of BHP’s global operations. It also underscores South Australia’s importance as a strategic centre for our copper investment and exploration activities, supported by a skilled local workforce and robust supply network.
The event also provides an opportunity to highlight how BHP is advancing its global strategy through operational excellence, innovation, and strong partnerships. As the industry
evolves, we remain focused on building resilient, future-ready supply chains, accelerating decarbonisation, and embedding sustainability across our value chain.
Events like AIMEX allow us to engage with peers, partners, and communities to share insights, explore new ideas, and strengthen the relationships that underpin our long-term success.
The return of the AIMEX Mining Pavilion is especially exciting. It provides a dedicated space for mining companies to highlight their initiatives, connect with stakeholders, and drive recruitment.
We are also proud to contribute to the AIMEX conference program, where our team will share insights into the trends shaping our industry – from technological innovation and decarbonisation of supply chains to workforce development and futurefacing exploration.
The Asia-Pacific region is a dynamic and growing hub for mining, and AIMEX is a key event
on the calendar that reflects this momentum. As demand for copper is forecast to grow by 70 per cent by 2050, BHP is positioning itself to meet that demand through organic growth in South Australia, Chile, Argentina and the US.
We thank the South Australian Government and AIMEX organisers for their support in bringing this
important event to Adelaide. It’s a strong signal of confidence in the state’s mining sector and its role in the global resources landscape. We look forward to welcoming attendees to the AIMEX Mining Pavilion and sharing how BHP is helping to shape the future of copper – right here in South Australia.
South Australia has established itself as a premier mining jurisdiction, boasting a host of emerging and established players across a range of commodities.
South Australia’s wealth of resources, highlyskilled workforce, and pro-mining regulatory environment means there’s a great opportunity for the state’s slew of promising mining projects to make their mark.
Across copper, uranium, magnetite, and graphite, among other minerals, South Australia’s mining sector can lay claim to some of Australia’s largest resource projects. But there is still room to grow, and more to achieve.
With some 68 per cent of Australia’s total copper reserves, South Australia is a key asset in the local and international copper market.
BHP’s Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill and Carrapateena mines anchor the state’s production, with Olympic Dam ranking as Australia’s largest copper mine, producing 214,000 tonnes of copper cathode in the 2024–25 financial year (FY25).
Other prominent copper players include Hillgrove Resources, which successfully declared commercial production at its Kanmantoo mine in July 2024. Rex Minerals continues to develop its Hillside project on the Yorke Peninsula as a planned 13year open pit operation that could produce around 37,000 tonnes of copper annually.
Meanwhile, Coda Minerals is advancing its Elizabeth Creek project with multiple high-grade copper discoveries, and Havilah Resources is progressing its Kalkaroo project, which has the potential to produce more than one million tonnes of copper across its mine life.
This diverse portfolio of established producers and emerging developments positions
South Australia as a dynamic copper province, with BHP’s integrated smelter and refinery complex at Olympic Dam providing crucial processing infrastructure that benefits the broader regional mining ecosystem.
South Australia also stands as the nation’s uranium mining hub, with production centred around three mining complexes: Olympic Dam, Honeymoon and BeverleyFour Mile.
BHP’s Olympic Dam operations produce uranium as a byproduct alongside copper, gold and silver. The mine produced 3154 tonnes of uranium in FY25, with the June quarter of this year being one of the operation’s best performances in recent memory, producing 974 tonnes of yellowcake across the three months.
Elsewhere, the local uranium sector has been buoyed by the restart of Boss Energy’s Honeymoon mine, which commenced commercial production at the start of 2025. This revival was the culmination of years of work, with Boss Energy targeting demonstrates the operational viability of South Australia’s uranium operations despite volatile global uranium markets.
Like Honeymoon, Heathgate Resources operates the Beverley and Four Mile mines using in-situ recovery methods. This sees the company drill into an orebody and pump in a solution to dissolve uranium minerals which are recovered through extraction wells.
Heathgate carries out further processing at its Beverley plant, where ore is subject to ion exchange to recover uranium oxide, also known as yellowcake.
South Australia’s magnetite sector represents a cornerstone of the state’s Green Iron and Steel Strategy, with the state boasting 18.8 billion tonnes of JORCcompliant magnetite ore as of June 2024. This substantial resource base positions the state to support low-carbon steel production just as global industries ramp up demand.
Magnetite Mines leads development through its flagship 4.5-billion-tonne Razorback iron ore project located just 240km northeast of Adelaide. The project is part of Green Iron SA, a consortium comprising Magnetite Mines, Aurizon, Flinders Port and GHD, demonstrating integrated supply chain planning from mine to port.
Lincoln Minerals is advancing its 1.25-billion-tonne Green Iron magnetite project located approximately 35km north of Port Lincoln on the southern Eyre Peninsula. Meanwhile, Iron Road is represented by its Central Eyre iron project, which boasts one of Australia’s largest magnetite ore reserves of 3.7 billion tonnes.
These magnetite operations are crucial for producing high-grade iron ore suitable for direct reduction processes, enabling low-emission steel production that aligns with global decarbonisation objectives and South Australia’s strategic positioning in the emerging green steel market.
From iron ore diplomacy to battery minerals, Australian miners are leading a new era of resource collaboration across the Asia-Pacific region.
Australian mining companies are playing a pivotal role in redefining resource collaboration across the Asia-Pacific.
The Australian mining sector has long been the backbone of regional trade, but as the global energy transition gains pace, its influence is evolving. No longer simply exporters of raw materials, Australian companies are now partners in developing secure, responsible, and future-focused supply chains.
With deepening relationships across China, South Korea, Japan and beyond, Australian miners are aligning investment, technology, and ESG (environmental, social and governance) leadership to support Asia-Pacific’s clean energy and industrial transformation.
Iron ore anchors a broader strategy
The strategic relationship between Australia and China remains grounded in iron ore, and despite evolving trade dynamics, it continues to form the bedrock of bilateral economic cooperation.
Major producers such as BHP, Rio Tinto, and Fortescue supply close to 60 per cent of China’s iron ore imports.
This volume is essential for sustaining China’s vast steel sector, which is responsible for more than half of global steel production.
While iron ore prices remain susceptible to fluctuations, including rallies and falls triggered by China’s undulating stimulus commitments, the long-term fundamentals of the trade remains strong. Chinese demand for highgrade iron ore enabling loweremissions steelmaking is aligning with Australia’s strengths in quality and supply stability.
The Pilbara region remains a global hub for premium ore, and producers continue to invest in improving grade consistency, automation, and rail and port infrastructure to meet evolving market expectations.
The Pilbara was on full display during recent high-level meetings between Australian executives and Chinese officials.
Engagement between the two countries now goes beyond shipments, extending into broader conversations on decarbonisation, downstream innovation and critical minerals cooperation.
In parallel, Rio Tinto has continued to progress its $30 billion Simandou iron ore project in Guinea, a joint venture with Chinese steelmakers.
Critical minerals have become a cornerstone of Asia-Pacific partnerships.
While not based in Australia, the project reflects the growing strategic interdependence between Australian mining expertise and Chinese industrial demand. This development could reshape seaborne iron ore flows, but Australian producers are expected to retain their competitive advantage through reliability, proximity, and ESG performance.
South Korea
Australia is strengthening ties with South Korea through its role in lithium processing and battery material supply. Pilbara Minerals (PLS), a leading ASX-listed lithium company, has emerged as a key player in this space.
PLS and South Korean steelmaker POSCO have established a joint venture, POSCO Pilbara Lithium
industry.
Solutions (PPLS), which in 2024 completed construction of Korea’s first lithium hydroxide conversion facility.
The plant processes spodumene concentrate from PLS’s Pilgangoora operation in Western Australia and has a production capacity of up to 43,000 tonnes per year of batterygrade lithium hydroxide, enough for about one million electric vehicles.
This facility is among the few large-scale lithium chemical operations outside of China and represents a significant regional shift in downstream processing. PLS retains an 18 per cent interest in the project and has a call option to increase this to 30 per cent.
“Extracting greater value from the battery materials supply chain by diversifying revenue streams is a key strategic focus for PLS,” the company said.
Japan has long been a trusted partner to Australia’s mining sector, and the relationship is evolving in the face of new geopolitical and technological challenges.
Lynas Rare Earths, the largest producer of separated rare earths outside China, continues to supply Japanese magnet manufacturers critical to high-tech industries such
as electric vehicles, defence, and wind power.
The Japanese Government has provided financial and policy support to ensure continued access to rare earths, viewing the partnership as key to national security and industrial resilience.
In Western Australia, Tivan’s Speewah fluorite project is being developed in collaboration with Japan Fluorite Corporation (JFC), a joint venture between Sumitomo Corporation and JOGMEC.
Speewah has received a $5.3 million commitment from JFC to fund a feasibility study. Located 100 kilometres south of Wyndham in the Kimberley, the project aims to deliver high-purity fluorspar for industries including semiconductors, aluminium, and uranium enrichment.
India is emerging as a key partner under Australia’s Critical Minerals Strategy, with both public and private sector initiatives advancing resource collaboration.
Australian miners are securing funding and joint ventures to support India’s ambitions in battery manufacturing and clean energy.
One standout example is the Australia–India Critical Minerals Investment Partnership, which has
unlocked investment for lithium and rare earth development.
India has already indicated its desire to explore and invest in critical minerals within Australia, with recent announcements suggesting the country is eager to secure raw materials including lithium, cobalt and copper from nations such as Australia, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In particular, NMDC subsidiary Legacy Iron Ore is actively looking for lithium partnership opportunities in Western Australia.
Australian companies are also transferring mining expertise, particularly in mine safety, ESG compliance, and emissions reduction, skills in high demand as India seeks to modernise its resources industry.
In Mongolia, the Oyu Tolgoi project, with the backing of British-Australian major Rio Tinto, has become one of the world’s largest coppergold operations.
Following a protracted ownership negotiation, Rio gained full control of the underground mine expansion in 2023.
The project is now a cornerstone of Rio’s decarbonisation strategy, as the company has committed to
powering Oyu Tolgoi with renewable energy by the end of the decade.
In addition, the project is delivering local economic benefits through employment, procurement, and community development programs, enhancing Mongolia’s reputation as a stable and responsible mining jurisdiction.
Across Asia, Australian miners are helping shape a new phase of regional cooperation built not only on resource supply, but on sustainability, innovation, and longterm trust.
Australian mining companies are no longer just exporters of commodities, they are collaborators in mine development, supporters of regional beneficiation and leaders in exporting advanced mining technologies and practices.
Whether through direct project ownership, shared infrastructure investments, or technical advisory roles, Australian miners are playing an active part in building the next generation of responsible mining operations.
This regional mining renaissance is not just about economic opportunity, it is also about developing resilient, transparent and low-carbon supply chains to support future industries.

The Eriez Dry Low Intensity Magnetic Separator (DLIMS) is a permanent magnetic separator for continuous, dry concentration of ferrous contaminants in mineral processing lines. It provides automated concentration of magnetic ores, removal of magnetite from fly ash, purification of ground slag, foundry sand, cement and minerals.
Eriez Dry Fast (DF) Agitating Drum Magnets are highstrength and high-capacity, and come in a complete range of models and options. They’re designed to be operated in a way similar to other drums but with some important differences. Older, slow, agitating or radial field drums employ only magnetic attraction and gravity as the separating forces. Their capacity is limited due to the slow speed of rotation of the drum shell. The DF High Speed Drums employ high-strength magnetic elements and high-speed shell rotation. This makes it possible to introduce a third factor in the separation of materials – inertia.
To maximise the advantage of all these forces, Eriez engineered new, powerful magnetic circuits which permit high rotational speeds for the drum shell. Carefully balanced magnetic attraction, field depth and shell speed achieve an efficient, high-capacity machine which effectively throws out fine non-magnetics and retains the magnetics.

The mining industry is constantly evolving, requiring new solutions for exploration, extraction, processing and manufacturing. This presentation will explore a powerful model for accelerating innovation by leveraging commonuse facilities and pilot plants. We’ll examine how this approach fosters a collaborative ecosystem by bringing together government, industry, business, community, and academia. Using the Resource Centre of Excellence as a case study, we’ll showcase how a three-stage business model facilitates research, investment and commercialisation
This presentation provides practical insights into key challenges and solutions in bulk materials handling across mining operations. It covers material flow property testing and how it informs the design of hoppers and chutes to prevent common issues such as blockages and poor discharge. This session will also discuss wear mechanisms affecting conveyor belts and chute liners, along with strategies for mitigating wear in demanding environments. The content is designed for mining companies, engineers, and equipment suppliers involved in bulk solids handling and transport systems.

On the second night of AIMEX 2025, the mining sector will come together and celebrate industry pioneers at the Prospect Awards.
Mining’s night of nights is upon us once again, with the Australian Mining Prospect Awards taking place at Adelaide Oval on the second night of Asia Pacific’s International Mining Exhibition (AIMEX).
For 21 years, the Prospect Awards has recognised the mining sector’s top performers on the grounds of excellence and innovation.
Last year’s winners included industry forerunners such as BHP, Hancock Iron Ore, IGO, Mineral Resources partner Buru Rehab, and Orica, highlighting the Prospect Awards’ prominence on a national scale.
Boasting the theme ‘bigger and better’, the black-tie gala night offers attendees the opportunity to get their colleagues together, grab a table, have a boogie and show up for the people doing great work across the industry.
Before the Prospect Awards officially gets underway, attendees will be invited to enjoy a networking cocktail hour with sweeping views of Adelaide’s riverbank precinct and panoramic views of the city.
Comedian and radio star Anthony “Lehmo” Lehmann returns as the official Master of Ceremonies for the event.
Known for his trademark humour, charisma, and professionalism, Lehmo will guide the evening as winners from 12 diverse award categories are revealed. While finalists will be announced ahead of the event, the winners remain a secret until the night, ensuring
plenty of suspense and excitement.
After the official proceedings wrap up, the celebrations will kick on with a high-energy live set from the Baker Boys Band.
The formalities
The 12 award categories have been carefully curated to highlight the breadth of mining across Australia, and the diverse metrics used to evaluate success.
Together, they shine a light on outstanding achievements, innovation, and leadership from Australia’s mining industry over the past year.
Prospect Awards categories include the award for First Nations
Engagement, proudly sponsored by Sandvik; Excellence in IIoT Application, proudly sponsored by ifm; Outstanding Mine Performance, proudly sponsored by Bonfiglioli; and the Engineering Success of the Year award.
A series of nominees will be recognised for their work in these categories, with winners to be announced on the night.
The Australian Mine of the Year award, proudly sponsored by SEW-EURODRIVE, is not open for direct nominations. Instead, the winner will be selected from the mines nominated across the 11 other categories.
Hancock Iron Ore won the prized trophy in 2024 through its Roy Hill mine – one of Australia’s largest iron ore mines. Located 1200km north of Perth in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, Roy Hill employs more than 3000 people across its three operations.
Hancock Iron Ore also won the Excellence in Mine Safety, Occupational Health and Safety award last year, with its ‘Safer Summer’ campaign recognised.
Other 2025 Prospect Award categories include Innovative Mining Solution, honouring a mine, company, or project that has developed a new product or offering or made significant changes or improvements to an existing solution.
The Safety Advocate of the Year award will recognise an individual committed to ensuring safety – either for an individual site or company, or for the mining industry as a whole, while the Project Lead of the Year category celebrates an individual who has led a project on a mine site to a successful outcome. This could be an internal project at a mine or a project led by a supplier or contractor.
Discovery of the Year honours a significant discovery at either a greenfields or brownfields site, while the Lifetime Achievement Award recognises an individual with at least 20 years of involvement in the sector who has gone above and beyond in their commitment to the industry.
Past winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award include Hancock Prospecting executive chairman Gina Rinehart, recognised at the 2021 edition, late Ausdrill founder Ron Sayers, celebrated at the 2022 Prospect Awards, and late Lincom chief executive officer Roy Watterson.
Watterson, who won the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award, dedicated his life to a business he founded and watched grow and develop for 25 years.
Under his leadership, Lincom expanded across Australia, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands to become one of the most successful equipment manufacturing suppliers to the Australian mining industry.
