First established in 2009 as the GayCharlotte Film Festival, our event has become an annual tradition in Charlotte, bringing together wider and wider portions of our community to celebrate our lives, loves, challenges, and triumphs on the big screen. SUNDAY, APRIL 28 | 5-7 PM | FREE ADMISSION, $5 DONATION ENCOURAGED Celebrating eleven years of LGBTQ film in the Queen City! Join us for hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, and music while we mix and mingle in recognition of our eleventh annual film festival. Special guest, out trans actor and director of color Nava Mau will speak on the importance of representations of queer and trans people of color in film and media as we screen her short film, “Waking Hour.”
SPECIAL GUEST:
Nava Mau Nava Mau is a filmmaker, actress, and cultural worker from Mexico City and San Antonio, Texas. As a student, she gained writing and production experience with live sketch comedy shows and Drawing the Shades, a play about survivors of sexual assault. Nava then joined Peacock Rebellion’s Brouhaha comedy program for queer and trans people of color for two years in a row in Oakland, California. In 2016, she was a coproducer and co-host, and she worked as a coach and featured artist in 2017. Nava was recently selected as the G&E Fellow on the set of the Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen documentary, and serves as a producer on Lovebites, a short film currently in pre-production. Nava wrote, produced, directed, and stars in Waking Hour, a short film about a young trans woman balancing her safety with her desire for intimacy. Over the past 8 years, Nava has engaged in culture change work with community-based service providers, student organizations, and survivors of violence. Her long-term vision is to bolster the stories of marginalized people in order to expand their access to resources.
