MELBOURNE

PHIL:OSOPHY

Over Easter I went to say goodbye to 15 Western Ave, Sunshine. It had been Franklin’s home for nearly 65 years. It was very sad to let it go but it’s time someone else made their start there.

Over the years, Franklin was very fortunate to have a group of very talented people to keep it running as smooth as clockwork.

When a problem arose, I invariably found myself relying on the same very busy people to get it sorted. These people consistently delivered results against the odds.

They were our heavy lifters.

Chances are, your charity is bearing the brunt of the cost of living crisis whilst struggling to find funding for your vital services and programs. So don't be backward in coming forward.

We're only too happy to help you with the heavy lifting.

In this issue, we highlight some extraordinary charities that we’re proud to support.

Firstly, the impact of Olivia's Place on young families is beautifully captured by Moving Stories, showcasing their dedication and support.

We share some exciting news about Foodbank Victoria's new packing line installation. This upgrade allows them to meet the unprecedented demand for food relief by repacking produce nine times faster than before.

And finally, we showcase The Community Grocer, a social enterprise bringing fresh, affordable food to communities through vibrant markets.

Join us in celebrating these exceptional organisations and the difference they make. Enjoy the stories, be inspired, and maybe even find a cause to support.

OLIVIA'S PLACE

“Thanks to Pressroom Philanthropy's support, we have witnessed a remarkable increase in community engagement and support for our cause.

Their efforts have not only helped expand our reach but have also attracted new volunteers and donors, significantly enhancing our ability to affect positive change.”

Olivia's Place, established in 2012 in Warragul, Victoria, serves as a beacon of support for families while navigating the challenges and joys of pregnancy and early parenting.

This vital community resource, led by the dedicated General Manager Pheba Daniel, is primarily powered by a small group of dedicated staff and an enthusiastic team of volunteers. These volunteers bring empathy and assistance to families when they need it most, ensuring that no one has to face the complexities of parenting alone.

One of the unique features of Olivia's Place is Little Livvy's Op Shop. This specialised store offers a range of baby goods and maternity items, providing affordable options for families while also supporting the broader mission of Olivia's Place. The revenue generated helps sustain the variety of services offered to the community.

Olivia's Place has acquired a trailer to enhance transportation for outdoor events, especially for their parenting tents. This new addition will allow them to extend their reach and deliver vital services more efficiently to families within the community. The signwriting on the trailer, a generous donation from Pressroom Philanthropy, is featured on both sides and the front, making it distinctive. Watch for this dazzling green trailer on Gippsland highways—it's a symbol of our commitment to supporting families wherever they are.

Real life impact brought to light by Moving Stories

The impact of Olivia's Place recently came to life through the lens of the Moving Stories team. Filmmakers Alex Walton and Sam Hewison captured the essence of this organisation in a series of heartfelt interviews.

Alicia, alongside her 6-month-old baby Luka, shared a moving account of how Olivia's Place filled the void left by the absence of her parents, offering her the support and resources needed to thrive.

Similarly, Christine and her baby Harper recounted the transformative effect of the assistance they received, illustrating the profound difference Olivia's Place makes in the lives of families.

These stories, beautifully portrayed by the Moving Stories team, are a testament to the invaluable work done at Olivia's Place. They invite viewers to witness the real-life impact of this organisation and engage with their mission.

WE SHOWCASE KOGO IN A NEW DOCUMENTARY

Knit One Give One (KOGO) is a beautiful organisation, blossoming from the dedication and compassion of its volunteers.

With a community of over 17,000 knitters from across Australia, KOGO radiates warmth, kindness, and generosity. These volunteers, who range from 11-years-old to wise souls over 100-years-old, donate their time and resources to craft knitted garments that envelop those in need with comfort and care.

Each knitted piece from KOGO is more than just a source of warmth; it carries an emotional embrace, a gentle reminder that someone has poured their heart into making it. These volunteers come from diverse backgrounds and walks of life, all united by a common thread of wanting to make a difference. Their collective effort is a testament to the strength and beauty of community spirit.

KOGO distributes its knitted treasures through over 390 Community Partner Organisations throughout Australia.

These partners, all registered not-forprofit organisations, support individuals facing various hardships, including crisis accommodation, emergency relief, family support services, homelessness services, hospital social work, and mental health services. Through these partnerships, KOGO ensures that their creations reach those who need them most, including children at risk, refugees, domestic violence survivors, remote Indigenous communities, primary schools, kindergartens, and playgroups.

Even with a large network of devoted knitters, the need for KOGO's handknitted items continues to grow. Always in high demand are blankets and baby cardigans.

Adult blankets and knitted squares for assembling into larger blankets, children's jumpers and cardigans, cuddly knitted toys, cot blankets, baby cardigans, beanies, and booties are also essential to meet the rising needs.

The impactful work of KOGO was beautifully captured in a documentary by Alex Walton and Sam Hewison. This touching film offers an intimate glimpse into the world of KOGO, highlighting the volunteers' dedication and showcasing the profound difference their work makes in communities across Australia. Through their lens, viewers can truly appreciate the love and care woven into every knitted item, underscoring the significance of KOGO's mission.

In every stitch, KOGO’s volunteers weave a tapestry of hope, comfort, and compassion, making a gentle yet profound difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Capturing the Magic of Story Dogs

Pressroom Philanthropy have written, directed and produced a fantastic new 90 second explainer animation for Story Dogs.

An engaging illustrated format inspired by the Charity’s logo, playful visuals and a professional voiceover gives great insight into the reason Story Dogs exists and the transformational nature of the incredible work being done by their volunteers.

“The Pressroom Team guided us through this animation project with remarkable collaboration, ease, and comfort. At every stage, we've been consulted, ensuring the final product reflects our program. We're deeply grateful for Pressroom's generous provision of such high-quality support. We are thrilled with the outcome.”

WOMEN’S CIRCUS

“We are so thankful to the entire Pressroom team, it’s hard to state the level of impact Pressroom have had on the recent success of Women’s Circus.”
Steph Cox Executive Director

Women's Circus is a dazzling not-for-profit intersectional feminist arts organisation nestled in the heart of Footscray's historic Drill Hall. With a yearround program that includes social circus, creative projects, and awe-inspiring performances, Women's Circus is dedicated to making unforgettable and lasting impacts. Whether it’s a fleeting encounter as an audience member or a lifelong commitment as a member, the experience is guaranteed to be extraordinary.

At the core of Women's Circus is a mission to empower people of marginalised genders to shape their communities and cultures through the electrifying art of circus. This empowerment comes alive through a variety of programs and performances that foster strength, resilience, and boundless creativity.

The crown jewel of their programming is their Annual Women's Circus Member Cabaret .

In 2023, the event was a spellbinding spectacle titled Pride and Possibilities, wrapping up the year with a bang! The cabaret dazzled audiences with outrageous contortion tap dancing, daring roller skating acrobatics, whimsical circus antics, and a surprise special guest at each show. Featuring 30 vibrant members and trainers, aged 20 to over 75, Pride and Possibilities ignited imaginations and showcased the inclusive, innovative spirit of Women's Circus. It was a celebration of strength and joy in the most delightfully absurd places—a must-see extravaganza.

Alex Walton of Moving Stories captured this fantastic show on video, preserving the mesmerising magic for all to enjoy. On a Friday night in December 2023, Alex was captivated by the amazing circus troupe, and her video showcases the incredible talent of this group.

This event invited everyone to celebrate the diverse talents and shared dreams of the Women's Circus members, reinforcing their unwavering commitment to inclusivity and artistic expression.

FOOD RELIEF

MARVELLOUS MINI MART MAKEOVER

The Geelong Food Relief Centre is a major provider of emergency food assistance throughout the Geelong Region, delivering essential support to the local community.

They collaborate with over 50 community organisations, each contributing significantly by preparing meals, operating community pantries and markets, and running children’s homework classes, among other food relief services.

A key component of their services is the operation of two minimarts. These mini-marts provide a supermarket experience for individuals and families to shop with dignity, choosing fresh, nutritious food to suit their needs.

This year, the centre distributed the equivalent of 2.2 million meals locally, representing over $8.25 million in groceries, 30% more than last year.

In early August 2023, Phil Taylor and interior designer Cara Jones visited Geelong to enhance the Mini Mart's user experience. They focused on making the space more userfriendly with improved wayfinding signage to attractive department locations. The introduction of interchangeable aisle signage using Velcro product boards has already made a significant impact. This ongoing project will soon extend improvements to both the warehouse and the kitchen.

Eating Disorders Families Australia

EDFA

Eating Disorders Families Australia (EDFA) is dedicated to providing support, education, advocacy, and counselling for carers and families affected by eating disorders.

This charity holds special significance for Phil Taylor, whose sister sadly passed away from anorexia and related complications in early 2022.

Two years later, we remain thoroughly impressed by the impactful work being carried out by EDFA and their dedicated team of volunteers with lived experience.

EDFA HOSTS AFTERNOON TEA AT PARLIAMENT HOUSE

On 20 March 2024, The Hon. Milton Dick MP, Speaker of the House of Reps, extended a gracious invitation to host an afternoon tea for EDFA at Parliament House in Canbera.

This event served as a pivotal opportunity to enlighten Federal MPs and Senators about the vital services provided by EDFA and the impact that an eating disorder has on the whole family. Over 50 individuals were in attendance, including the Co-Chairs of the Parliamentary Friends of Eating Disorders and prominent figures from the eating disorder sector.

Among the speakers were Federal Assistant Minister for Mental Health Emma McBride and Shadow Health Minister Anne Ruston. A highlight of the event was the screening of a four-minute video, created by our Moving Stories team.

The video shared the experiences of carers, emphasising that those who maintain their own well-being can more effectively support their loved ones with eating disorders. It underscored the comprehensive nature of recovery, which must address the physical, psychological, and social impacts on the entire family. The emotional impact of the video was palpable, evoking a strong response from the audience as it portrayed the struggles and challenges faced by families dealing with eating disorders.

Additionally, Pressroom produced a visually compelling handout detailing the effects of eating disorders on families and highlighting the vital role of EDFA’s the 'Fill The Gap' Counselling Service.

This handout featured a QR code linking directly to their video, leaving a lasting impression on attendees. Many took copies for their electorate offices and personal reference.

“Pressroom Philanthropy's support of Eating Disorders Families Australia has been pivotal to the growth of our charity, helping us to reach many more families across Australia who would otherwise face the stress, social isolation and exhaustion of caring for someone with an eating disorder on their own.”

THE SOCIAL STUDIO

Empowment Through Fashion and Creativity

"Having Pressroom Philanthropy recognise this work means so much to us and our students."

The Social Studio, one of our newest charity partners, is a multi-faceted social enterprise dedicated to education, retail, and production, all centred around people. This innovative organisation harnesses fashion and creativity to provide work and learning opportunities for Melbourne's refugee and new migrant communities.

By collaborating closely with these communities, The Social Studio creates pathways for education and employment, extending its impact to a broader network of new migrants and refugees.

Training for future generations

Phil Taylor, reflecting on his experience running the family printing company Franklin Web, recalls a time when up to 35 apprentices were at various stages of their training. His conversation with Dewi Cooke, CEO of The Social Studio, reinforced the importance of training for the future generations of Australia.

We are thrilled to support The Social Studio as they continue to train more students in clothing and textile design. Their efforts not only equip individuals with valuable skills but also build their confidence, empowering them to secure meaningful employment.

“Pressroom's pro bono marketing support has been unbelievably empowering for us. Not only do we have the support of professional and quality designers, we also have the freedom to dream big and expand our marketing goals as we aim to share the important story of vulnerable women and children in India and Sri Lanka with a wider audience.”

THE NAPPY COLLECTIVE

Celebrating Ten Years of Nappy Collectiveness

The Nappy Collective collects and distributes nappies to families in crisis. What began in 2013 as one woman’s simple act of passing on her leftover nappies to a womens refuge, has since grown into an incredible 6.5 million nappies donated to help more than 215,000 families in crisis.

The Nappy Collective were absolutely thrilled to have marked a pivotal moment in the life of their charity with a 10-Year Celebration event. It was a truly heart warming experience, made all the more special by the incredible support they received from everyone involved. The team at The Nappy Collective were particularly grateful to Alex, our Moving Stories creative, whose exceptional talent behind the camera captured the spirit of the event in such a beautiful and comprehensive way.

The video created is not just a wonderful keepsake of the milestone celebration; it's also become a valuable asset for their charity in sharing the story of the Nappy Collective with potential funders and supporters. It's a touching reminder of their journey over the past decade and a testament to the impact their community of volunteers and partners have made together.

“Pressroom's pro bono marketing support has been wonderful for The Nappy Collective. As a small grassroots charity powered mainly by the dedication of volunteers, our marketing prowess was modest at best. The generous collaboration with Pressroom Philanthropy is more than I could have hoped for, creating greater visibility and enabling us to share our narrative with our supporters in a way that is both compelling and impactful.”

We couldn’t be happier for the wonderful team and volunteers at The Nappy Collective in achieving this milestone.

BIG GROUP HUG

Attractive Signage Improves Warehouse Efficiency

Big Group Hug is a dedicated organisation focused on tackling child poverty by aiding local communities. They provide essential items to vulnerable children in crisis, ensuring that every young family in need receives support, with the child's wellbeing as the primary focus.

This grassroots organisation is powered by more than 350 committed volunteers working tirelessly to help the community’s most vulnerable children and families.

Big Group Hug provided support to over 6,000 children last year and are on track to support 8,000 this year. The crucial material aid they provide includes toiletries, clothing, books, formula, nappies, car seats, prams, and bedding.

In July 2023, Big Group Hug moved into a spacious new warehouse in Thomastown. To organise their operations efficiently, they required a system to clearly identify each aisle's contents.

Pressroom Philanthropy’s graphic designers quickly devised an effective solution. Attractive foamboard signage was affixed to the racking, creating a simple yet highly efficient wayfinding system. Now, volunteers can easily locate items, such as socks and sleeping bags in Aisle 02 and clothing for girls and boys aged 1-3 in Aisle 03.

We were delighted to assist the volunteers at Big Group Hug in meeting their daily operational needs.

“Our volunteers are very happy and regularly comment on the vibrant look and feel of the signage design. Everything that Pressroom does for us is significant, and has lifted Big Group Hug to another level and we are so grateful.”

Backpacks 4 VIC Kids (B4VK) transforms the lives of vulnerable children entering out-of-home care by equipping them with backpacks filled with essential items.

These children often face sudden relocation, carrying little more than the clothes on their backs. B4VK steps in, offering essentials like pyjamas, toothbrushes, torches, books, toys, and more, letting them know someone truly cares.

Backpacks 4 Vic Kids (B4VK) launched its 'Tiny Site' at Bendigo Baptist Church in Junortoun, relocated from Hallam, and operational since February. B4VK has additional Tiny Sites in Ballarat, Keysborough, Port Melbourne, and Rochester, with plans for more locations. The Chatty Cafe Scheme C

CHATTY CAFE

Connecting Communities Across Australia

The Chatty Café Scheme Australia was founded by Glenys Reid in 2020 to help connect communities after experiencing her own feelings of loneliness and isolation. Inspired by the British Chatty Café model, Glenys established the initiative to encourage people to come together for a chat at volunteer-hosted tables, fostering connection and community spirit.

In February 2024, a State of the Nation Report by Ending Loneliness Together provided a comprehensive snapshot of loneliness and social isolation in Australia. The study aimed to understand the distribution of social health across the Australian population and examine the relationships between loneliness, social isolation, community knowledge, stigma, physical and mental health, health service utilisation, quality of life and work productivity.

The report revealed that 1 in 3 Australians feel lonely, highlighting that loneliness affects everyone. Supprisingly, young and middle-aged people experience some of the highest levels of loneliness.

Today, with over 200 venues across Australia, the Chatty Café Scheme welcomes people of all ages to sit, have a cuppa, and enjoy a chat. The scheme has expanded to include various social and hospitality venues such as cafes, restaurants, clubs, pubs, community centres, libraries, churches, schools, aged-care residences, retirement villages, neighbourhood houses, hotels, wine bars, and art galleries.

FOODBANK VICTORIA MEETING UNPRECEDENTED DEMAND

“When you’re shipping 14 million kilos of food around Victoria each year, supporting 65,000 people a day who all rely on Foodbank to get a healthy, nourishing meal on the table for their family, you need a partner like Pressroom Philanthropy. Phil Taylor and his team are there for us like we’re there for people who need food.

They whip up our 40-page Annual Report every year, provide state of the art machinery that has supercharged our ability to pack and distribute food, produce large scale signage for our warehouses and demonstrate time and time again that they care deeply about our work and the communities we serve. We couldn’t do what we do without them.”

In their 93 years of supporting Victorians through everything from the Great Depression, ever more frequent natural disasters, and a global pandemic Foodbank Victoria have never been needed more than they are right now.

In 2023, when Victorians needed Foodbank the most, the organisation responded by increasing distribution by 21%. As communities grappled with the enduring impacts of COVID-19, floods, and the most severe costof-living crisis in over two decades, demand for support surged. At the beginning of 2023, Foodbank Victoria was feeding 50,000 people a day. Now they’re feeding 65,000 people a day through their 500 charity partners.

Foodbank continued its collaboration with farmers, growers, and wholesalers, reinforcing their vision of healthy food for all. Last year they sourced and distributed more than 4 million kilograms of fresh produce,a 41% increase from the previous year.

In discussions with Dave McNamara, Phil Taylor agreed that a new packing line would significantly expedite the repacking of fresh fruit and vegetables. Pressroom Philanthropy committed to funding this investment, which included bulk bin handling equipment, fully automatic bin unstacking, tipping, washing, and repacking.

With the new packing line ordered in May 2023, preparations were made at Foodbank’s Yarraville warehouse. By the end of the year, the machine was installed and operational, much to the delight of the volunteer crew. Foodbank reported that the new packing line could complete the job nine times faster than previous methods, helping them meet the rising need for their services. The packing line has also made it nine times easier for their team, removing most of the back breaking work of sorting through food donations.

An amazing improvement for both volunteers and staff.

PRIDE CUP CHAMPIONING INCLUSIVITY IN AUSTRALIAN SPORTS

In a country where sport is woven into our cultural fabric, participation among the LGBTIQ+ community remains alarmingly low.

Pride Cup is on a mission to change this, working hard with limited resources to support sporting teams across the country to become more welcoming and safer for LGBTQIA+ folk who are usually not so welcome in clubrooms, or on the field.

Pride Cup partners with community clubs across all sporting codes, working to educate and empower them to lead the way in inclusivity and diversity. From humble beginnings with their first game in Yarra Glen in 2012, Pride Cup has expanded exponentially. Over 800 clubs now participate in Pride Cup events, spanning a diverse array of sports— from footy and hockey to roller derby, lawn bowls, netball, water polo and more. The work they're doing is so important, with participating clubs seeing a 40% reduction in the use of homophobic and transphobic language.

Pride Cup events are vibrant, celebratory affirmations of love and acceptance, making an immediate and powerful impact on LGBTIQ+ players, spectators, and community members. Despite their significant achievements, there's still much work to be done to make sports safe and inclusive for everyone. Only 51% of participants strongly disagreed that homosexuality is wrong or unnatural, highlighting the ongoing need for change.

Pressroom Philanthropy proudly supports Pride Cup’s movement for change. We have provided design and print services to create

their latest Impact Report, a refresh of the Pride Cup Club Welcome Pack, the Pride Cup handbook as well as high-impact signage and banners for sporting events, helping to spread their message of inclusion, welcoming and acceptance.

“These pieces help us communicate our impact, and tell the stories of the people who run Pride Cup's in their own teams, across the country. These polished, modern designs help visually communicate our professionalism, enthusiasm, and passion for making sports a safe space for the queer community, and help provide us with the tools that support our community organisers to get their game days off the ground.”

READY SET

READY TO WORK, SET TO SUCCEED

For many Victorians, securing employment is a significant challenge due to personal circumstances.

The process of finding a suitable job, crafting a CV and arriving at an interview well-prepared and appropriately dressed can be daunting. Ready Set steps in to support those facing vulnerability and disadvantage, setting them on a path to employment. They offer assistance to anyone in need, regardless of gender, age, or background.

Ready Set's mission is to strengthen communities by empowering jobseekers with clothing, coaching, and connections, helping them build confidence, achieve their dreams, and transform their lives.

Embracing a Brand New Look

Recently, the Ready Set brand underwent a makeover, featuring a new colour scheme and a stylish logo. The Pressroom Philanthropy creatives embraced this new look by designing brand-new swing tags to elevate the presentation of their clothing. We also created promotional postcards and thank-you cards to acknowledge their many supporters, alongside an impactful Annual Review for 2023.

With these enhancements, Ready Set is not only changing lives but also making a significant impact, ensuring their mission is reflected in every aspect of their brand.

Because no child should miss out on the joy and opportunity of team sports

A Transformative Experience

Team Sports 4 All (TS4A) assists families facing severe financial hardship by getting their kids involved in sports. These families often can’t afford the costs associated with community team sports.

With the rising cost of living, TS4A's services are more essential than ever. They meet with families, connect them to a club, cover fees and uniform costs, and, most importantly, provide ongoing support.

To date, TS4A has helped 432 children play sports. The impact of team sports can be life-changing, fostering social inclusion, better health, personal development, educational benefits, and reducing the likelihood of criminal activity.

The 2024 Team Challenge

Each year, TS4A hosts their Team Challenge, a fun and engaging event designed to get everyone active while raising crucial funds to help more disadvantaged kids join team sports. The creative team at Pressroom Philanthropy designed promotional materials, including flyers, posters, letterheads, and a captivating video to maximize participation in this March fundraising event.

We are delighted to support TS4A, every child deserves the chance to play.
