Music For Victoria Program Message Friends, Welcome back to Hamer Hall – we have missed you! In the last 12 months many of us have reflected on how much live music matters to us. As individuals, and also as a community coming together to share in a live experience. We have reflected on what has been missing, but also the impact on the many people involved in bringing live music to us. The musicians, artists, conductors, the sound and lighting technicians, the crew who ready the venues and the people who collect our tickets and serve us at interval. There is no doubt that the sector has been delivered a major blow. This is why Music for Victoria was conceived. How do we bring live music back and in doing so provide great experiences for Victorians to re-engage with? How can we provide work for the many artists and support crew who have been so heavily impacted by COVID-19 restrictions? The vision and drive of a prominent Melbourne businessman saw the creation of the Music for Victoria Fund, which has been supported by other generous benefactors from across the community. On behalf of the partners on this project – Arts Centre Melbourne, the Aussie Pops Orchestra and James Morrison and the many musicians Music for Victoria will help, we say thank you to the supporters here tonight.
You may know Arts Centre Melbourne for having the best venues in the City - where the very best of live music performance can be seen – from opera to musical theatre, from local talent to international stars. But our role in music is so much more than that. Our relationship with the music sector is rich and varied – it goes beyond putting on the performance. • We tell the stories of Australia’s contemporary music history in the Australian Music Vault, a free exhibition that gets up close and personal with our musical icons. • We support the next generation of music event producers through our partnership with The Push in our dedicated youth space, The Channel. • We provide a platform for music stars of the future to showcase their talents through programs like the recent Live and LoFi series on our Forecourt. • And through the Arts Wellbeing Collective and our partnership with Support Act, we support the mental health and wellbeing of musicians, backstage workers, agents and venue owners so that they can continue to do the work we so depend on them for.

Music For Victoria Getting the band back together!
As the pandemic took its hold over Victoria 12 months ago the live music scene was one of the worst affected industries. Overnight, 700 Victorian live music venues went silent. 100,000 gigs were cancelled during 2020 and $1.42 billion of economic gain to Victoria was lost.
Tonight’s Gala Concert is a celebration of generosity from many that will enable thousands of musicians to take to the stage once again across our state. Music for Victoria is about ‘getting the band back together’ to promote and support live music across Victoria.
Music for Victoria has been formed by a group of generous business leaders. Its sole intention is simple; provide music venues with the financial means to books bands and music artists to reinvigorate the once vibrant live music scene.

The hospitality industry has equally been hard hit by the pandemic. Financially struggling pubs and clubs are not able to book music gigs. Music for Victoria aims to remove that barrier giving the opportunity for live music to once again headline silent venues from West Footscray to Warrnambool. James Morrison James Morrison AM is, by anybody’s standard, a virtuoso in the true sense of the word. Besides the trumpet, this multi-instrumentalist also plays trombone, piano, saxophone and double bass. At the age of six he started on piano, at seven he took up brass, at nine he formed his first band and at thirteen he was playing professionally in nightclubs. His international career developed just as quickly with a debut in the USA at the Monterey Jazz Festival at age sixteen. Following this were performances at the world’s major jazz festivals, including Montreux, North Sea, Nice and the Hollywood Bowl, playing with many of the legends of jazz - Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, George Benson, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Ray Brown and Wynton Marsalis to name a few. James also frequents the world’s most famous jazz clubs – Birdland, The Blue Note and Village Vanguard in New York, the New Morning in Paris, the Tokyo Blue Note and Ronnie Scott’s in London.
James has been appointed a member of The Order of Australia, has won countless awards and has been inducted into the Australian Jazz Hall of Fame. He has received several honorary Doctorates and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of South Australia, leading his own music Academy. Now 58, James Morrison’s career has included much more than just jazz. He has recorded with The London Symphony Orchestra, rock legends INXS and the European Brass Ensemble, performed at the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms, written the opening fanfare for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, played for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and for US Presidents, Bush and Clinton. He has played classical trumpet at the Kremlin, broken a Guinness record conducting the World’s Largest Orchestra, was TV presenter on Top Gear Australia and in 2016 was a guest of President Obama at the White House. He’s a pilot, rally driver, sailor, author and even an inventor…

John Foreman John Foreman OAM is a creative director, pianist, musical director and composer, appearing on Australian television screens for more than two decades, and has performed with artists ranging from Chris Isaak, Reba McEntire, Joe Williams and James Galway to Shirley Bassey, Hugh Jackman, Olivia Newton John and Tony Bennett. He has been running the Aussie Pops Orchestra since 2019. John is musical director for Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight® and the TV Week Logie Awards. He hosted The Big Night In with John Foreman, and a Ten Network special, John Foreman Presents Burt Bacharach, which featured Bacharach performing live and being interviewed by John, has hosted the Australia Day Live broadcast from Sydney Opera House on ABC since 2019. John was musical director for the Oprah Winfrey Show Australian finalé, broadcast worldwide - also from the Sydney Opera House. John’s compositions have been performed all over the world.

John wrote The Flame, which was performed by Tina Arena and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Opening Ceremony. His compositions have also been performed by artists such as Vanessa Amorosi and Paulini. He wrote Melbourne Girl for the BBC’s telecast of the Closing Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, and Light The Way which was performed by Jose Carreras at the Asian Games in Doha. John is the ambassador for Music: Count Us In, an initiative of the Australian Music Council, to encourage music education in schools, and hosts the annual Schools Spectacular for Channel 7. He is on the Board of the Talent Development Project Foundation, and in 2013 was the Artistic director of the Asia Pacific Special Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. He has been Creative Director for Australia Day in Sydney since 2016. “I’m so grateful that everyone is here this evening”, says John, “and so grateful for the generosity that our supporters are showing for Victoria’s musicians.”

Nina Ferro When you hear Nina Ferro perform, should you not quite believe your ears, then put your faith in Tony Bennett’s immaculate taste. After she had opened for him in concert, the great vocalist said of Nina Ferro: “She’s a fabulous performer with a knockout voice”. But you don’t need Mr. Bennett’s highly discerning musical ear to realize he is right. Once she starts to sing, you’ll know instantly that you are in the presence of a formidable talent. Nina Ferro is considered by her global peers as a vocal sensation, and has a following of fans, musicians and students from all over the world. Nina is a multi awardwinning vocalist, songwriter, session and recording artist. With 8 solo albums to her credit, guest appearances on ARIA award winning albums and a performance history longer than one’s own arm, it’s no wonder Nina is one of the most sought after vocalists on the international circuit. Having lived in the U.K. for over a decade, Nina has now chosen to share her time between the two cities she loves, Melbourne and London. Nina has opened as the special guest artist for Grammy Award winning industry legends Tony Bennett, Gregory Porter, Juanes, Charles Aznavour and Neil Sedaka. Nina is absolutely at home whether performing for a 10,000+ strong arena audience as she is playing to a more intimate crowd. With so many strings to her bow, there is one thread running through it all, glistening like a seam of gold in a coal mine – Nina Ferro’s voice which, as the great man said is knockout!

Silvie Paladino Silvie Paladino is one of Australia’s most versatile and talented entertainers. Her first theatrical role was Eponine in the Australasian tour of Les Misérables. She was then invited to perform the same role in the London production on the West End. In 1997, Silvie returned to London and performed the role of Fantine in Les Misérables for a successful two-year season. Silvie’s other Australian credits include her one-woman show Silvie Paladino Sings Streisand (Green Room Award nomination), and the roles of: Jeannie in Hair, Grizabella in the Australian and Asian tour of Cats, Ellen in Cameron Mackintosh’s Australian premiere of Miss Saigon, Donna in the smash hit Mamma Mia!, Rita in the world premiere of Sideshow Alley, Clara in Passion and for The Production Company: Lady Thiang in The King And I, Florence in Chess (Green Room and Helpmann Award nominations) and Jerry’s Girls.

Silvie has appeared in concert with Australia’s leading orchestras and has also toured with Michael Bolton, Patrizio Buanne and performed with celebrated theatre composers Stephen Schwartz and Stephen Sondheim. Silvie is also well known to Australian audiences through her performances at special events and regular television appearances including Carols by Candlelight. Her recordings include Silvie Paladino Sings Streisand, Silvie Paladino -Christmas List, On My Own and, recorded with The Melbourne Staff Band of The Salvation Army, When You Believe, I Give You My Heart and O Holy Night. She most recently recorded Take My Breath Away – The Songs of Eva Cassidy.

Chris Sebastian As winner on The Voice Season 9 in 2020, singer – songwriter; Chris Sebastian captured the attention and the hearts of Australians nationwide, both for his incredible talent, and his gracious, likeable nature.
Chris recently toured his stripped back, acoustic style show across NSW and the ACT. Fans have been drawn to Chris not only through his stunning vocals, but his trademark honest connection with his audience.
Chris first found his voice and love for music at a very young age. This passion has never left him, and today Chris has honed his craftsmanship of songwriting alongside the industry’s best, writing for major artists and labels, and developing his own unique style.
An electric performance, striking vocal technique, and a passion for his audience: this is what you can expect from an experience with Chris Sebastian.

James Morrison Quartet The James Morrison Quartet is one of the world’s most in demand jazz ensembles. Featuring Australian multiinstrumentalist James Morrison, the group has taken the international music scene by storm performing at major festivals such as BBC Proms with superstar Dianne Reeves, Melbourne International Jazz Festival with Patti Austin and performing at famous jazz venues including Ronnie Scott’s in London. James Morrison is known throughout the world for his sheer brilliance as a jazz musician and an all-round entertainer. He has played with legends including Ray Brown, Dave Brubeck, Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, and Wynton Marsalis.
The James Morrison Quartet presents swinging jazz standards, sublime ballads, and haunting latin numbers with a few surprises thrown in. Featuring James’s sons, Harry Morrison on Bass and William Morrison on Guitar, as well as Patrick Danao on Drums, the James Morrison Quartet performs tunes spanning the history of jazz as well as originals by Morrison himself and other Australian jazz greats. History
For over thirty years, the Aussie Pops Orchestra has presented a unique blend of popular classical and contemporary music to Australian audiences. The orchestra presents exciting programs across a broad spectrum of popular music – from Bolero to the Beatles, Gershwin to Tchaikovsky, Strauss waltzes to the classic rhythms of Cole Porter or the haunting melodies of Andrew LloydWebber. From the Sydney Opera House and Arts Centre Melbourne to Rod Laver Arena, the APO has the versatility to play a wide range of musical genres. The Australian Pops Orchestra was founded in 1980 by Kel McMillan. An accomplished musician, Kel inspired innovative interpretations of hundreds of musical masterpieces and brought a fresh approach to the presentation of orchestral music in Australia. In 2006, Kel decided to step aside from the APO. With the orchestra facing an uncertain future, celebrated musician and singer David Ashton-Smith – who would later be awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for his services to music – took over the orchestra, alongside internationally renowned entrepreneur Dr Chris Brendon.
This is where Chris’s daughter, Ingrid Ross, joins the story. Ingrid recalls their conversation: “Do you think you can help me out for a few months?” asked Chris. Seven years and many concerts later, Chris and his daughter Ingrid had become the orchestra’s “dynamic duo”, staging many successful concerts around Australia. In 2018, Dr Brendon passed away suddenly and, for the first time in many years, there was no Aussie Pops Orchestra New Year’s Eve Concert at Hamer Hall. In 2019, Ingrid caught up with conductor John Foreman over a Lygon Street lunch to discuss the future of the orchestra. With the passing of her father, Ingrid wanted to step aside from the APO but was keen that the legacy of the orchestra be maintained. John agreed to take the reins of the orchestra. “The Aussie Pops has been an amazing part of our family for so many years,” says Ingrid. “It is more than just an orchestra entertaining an audience – it is friends (musicians and patrons) catching up each year through the love of music.” “Dad would be so thrilled John and his team are continuing this beautiful tradition,” she added.
In 2010, David decided to step aside from the APO to concentrate on choral music, and once again the orchestra faced an uncertain future. Dr Brendon had a passion for the wonderful music of the orchestra, but needed a compatriot to bring his vision for the APO to life.

The Pandemic
“In retrospect,” says John, “2019 may not exactly have been the ideal time to take over the running of a symphony orchestra.” “That said, I’ve always tried to be an optimist, and we’ve done our very best to make the most of these unusual circumstances creating new audiences, finding opportunities for the musicians, and maintaining the connection with our loyal APO community”. In March of 2020, as the pandemic was taking hold across the world, John Foreman’s Aussie Pops Orchestra released a groundbreaking video presentation of What a Wonderful World on YouTube, to raise awareness of music industry charity, Support Act. The musicians “phoned in” their parts from isolation, together with leading Australian artists including Dami Im, Isaiah Firebrace, Rhonda Burchmore, Lucy Durack plus Bert and Patti Newton.

The video was an instant hit, gaining hundreds of thousands of views around the world, and garnering great media coverage for the orchestra and for Support Act, and providing hope and joy to audiences around Australia. “The video really struck a chord with people,” says John. “We had so many amazing comments – so many people were moved by the song, the orchestra, and the fact that we had found a way to connect while being at home. It was such a weird time for everyone, but as these sorts of presentations started emerging, there was a real sense of togetherness and hope”.
The Wonderful World success resulted in a deepening of the relationship between the Aussie Pops and Arts Centre Melbourne, and the emergence of Arts Centre Melbourne’s Big Night In – a weekly online show, supported by Victoria Together, which kept the orchestra busy during the lockdown and provided a vital platform for Arts Centre Melbourne artists whose shows had been cancelled or delayed due to the pandemic. The shows were a huge hit, and were viewed millions of times.
Arts Centre Melbourne’s Big Night In enabled our beloved Arts Centre to maintain the vital connection between artist, musician, venue and audience. It was a lifeline, in so many ways.” As 2021 approached, the APO wanted to find a way to maintain their New Year’s Eve tradition – but without a live audience, this would be a challenge. With the support of Creative Victoria, the Aussie Pops New Year’s Eve Gala was broadcast at 7:30pm NYE nationally on Channel Ten, reaching hundreds of thousands of viewers across Australia.
“Ingrid and I often talked, over the years, about how great it would be if our NYE concert could be broadcast nationally. After thirty years of live audiences, it took a pandemic to force us to make the leap to television. Of course, we missed the live audience this year, but the network was thrilled, and it was a wonderful experience for all of us.”
“The team at Arts Centre Melbourne was amazing”, says John. “Think about it – almost overnight, their entire strategy had to change, and their relationship with all of their stakeholders, from audiences to venue hirers to producers to staff – had to change, dramatically and immediately.

The Future
“In so many ways, tonight’s concert represents our hopes for the orchestra’s future”, says John. “It’s our first concert in front of a live audience in more than a year. That’s so exciting for us.”
“Without the generosity of our amazing supporters, we simply wouldn’t be here tonight. We are so grateful, and can’t wait to be in front of full houses again.”
“Of course, the future is uncertain, but we’re very hopeful. We want to be in front of live audiences again, and we want to build on our relationships with television networks. We want to establish Melbourne as a great place to be for New Year’s Eve.”

Everyone is welcome, and we devise programs and projects to enable our visitors and audiences to experience the arts, both as spectator and creator. Our commitment to participation and education are central to what we do, enabling us to inspire a new generation of creatives and makers. We are now focused on Reimagining Arts Centre Melbourne as part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to transforming the Melbourne Arts Precinct into a thriving, connected creative and civic space over the coming years.
Supporting Sector Recovery COVID-19 has devastated the live performance sector, cutting the livelihoods of thousands in the arts - whether as a musician or performer, a designer or director, a backstage technician or a front of house attendant. After many months without live performance, we’re reminded more than ever how the arts enriches our lives, building stronger, more connected communities. With venues closed, musicians and artists have been unable to work. Live music is slowly returning to our city and regional towns, but the sector is fragile and recovery will be long and hard.
Music for Victoria is a special fund established in partnership between generous philanthropists, John Foreman’s Aussie Pops Orchestra, James Morrison and Arts Centre Melbourne. Arts Centre Melbourne will distribute donated funds from Music for Victoria in small grants for venues to hire a musician or a band for a live music gig.
