Supporting inclusion is a slam-dunk with Helping Hoops

Speaking with Clinton Meehan, the Founder and Executive Director of Helping Hoops (HH) as he describes how they support young people across Melbourne, is, well, totally exciting and inspiring.

HH currently runs 14 programs that provide the opportunity for 600 children and young people to play 2 hours of basketball each Thursday afternoon. They’re supported, coached, inspired, and empowered. “Sport is their outlet. It’s their exercise, but it’s so much more… it’s the social cohesion, building connections and relationships with each other that really make the difference” says Clinton.

“We have learned that our impact goes beyond the basketball court, affecting the children and young people positively. The human connection and having a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for kids to participate in sport is the greatest gift of all.”

“The most significant way, in fact, the best way, partners can assist HH is to support one of our programs, just as Pressroom Philanthropy has done in supporting the Kensington program for 2021.˝ Pressroom additionally funded the development of a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Strategy, to continue the leading work we do within the communities we serve. Also, the Pressroom design and printing support will really assist, so we’re looking forward to multi-faceted benefits from our relationship through 2021 and beyond.”

Game Changers Luncheon

Helping Hoops ‘Game Changers’ luncheon was held in late November and was a huge success raising $26,000. Over 150 keen basketball enthusiasts enjoyed a hearty lunch at Half Acre in South Melbourne. The Speakers on the Couch, featured an all-star line-up of powerful voices from the sporting community and how they are driving change.

Helping Hoops’ mission is to use basketball to inspire, empower and support children and young people. They achieve this through providing free community-based programs that instill values and skills that benefit participants in their everyday lives. Find out more at www.helpinghoops.com.au.
