On Wednesday, April 24, more than 400 volunteers and Presbyterian Healthcare Services (PHS) staff members gathered at Hotel Albuquerque in Old Town to celebrate the 2018 contributions of our volunteers. In addition to current volunteers and PHS management and staff, we welcomed past Volunteer Services Board members, PHS senior leadership and Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation staff. Special thanks to Rick Scott, Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation (PHF) President, and Dale Maxwell, PHS President and CEO, for their words of kindness and appreciation for our volunteers. We would also like to thank the many PHS departments and community businesses – more than 100 groups in all – for their generosity in donating an assortment of items to our prize-drawing portion of the event (for a full list of donors, please see “With Gratitude” on
page 2). Also, thank you to the PHS and PHF staff members who helped out with a variety of tasks throughout the “Wizard of Oz”–themed event. Again, we thank our volunteers for the invaluable services and support they provide. We look forward to working with each of you throughout the coming year.

Welcome to Your Redesigned Newsletter! Thank you for your responses to our newsletter survey last spring. In response to your feedback, we will strive to bring you “news you can use” in a more readable format. We hope you enjoy the feature articles about the goings-on in the Presbyterian world as they pertain to volunteers. We’ve also added articles that feature volunteers and volunteer opportunities throughout the central delivery system (Albuquerque
Metro Area/Rio Rancho/Santa Fe). In addition, you’ll find tips and reminders about requirements such as flu shots and annual compliance tests. A calendar of events will help you keep track of the dates and times for upcoming events, including this year’s PHF Laughter is the Best Medicine event on August 24 at the Albuquerque Convention Center. This is your newsletter! We welcome your ongoing feedback about the
redesigned format and encourage you to offer suggestions for additional improvements by emailing us at phsvolunteer@phs.org. Our desire is for the newsletter to reflect the professionalism and importance of your ongoing commitment to Presbyterian’s patients, staff and visitors, for which we are enormously grateful! The Many Benefits of Board Leadership It should come as no surprise that Presbyterian Healthcare Services is poised to grow and expand a great deal in the not-too-distant future. With this growth comes a greater need to increase our volunteer numbers, not only by recruiting new volunteers, but by adding new members to our Volunteer Services Board of Directors. If you know someone who has an interest in participating on the board, please encourage him or her to contact me (rmcgrath50@msn.com) or any other member of the Volunteer Services board and we would be glad to sit down and chat. Board membership offers many advantages. For starters, statistics show that people who volunteer have longer life expectancy. Then there is the personal satisfaction that comes with giving back and assisting in our community. Other advantages are specific to volunteering for Presbyterian:

I would also like to thank all of you for honoring me with your vote of confidence as the Board Chair again this year. It really is the work of the Board that produces the positive gains that will benefit our community for years to come. I simply try to keep it moving in the right direction and the other members, along with staff from Presbyterian Volunteer Services, are the ones who truly do the important work. May you all be blessed many times over for what you do for others.

New Facility, New Faces After much anticipation, the new Presbyterian Santa Fe Medical Center (SFMC) opened last fall. The 342,000-square-foot medical center offers the community of Santa Fe and surrounding areas a broader range of services focused on improving quality, enhancing the patient experience and providing greater access to healthcare in a welcoming environment. Some of the center’s features include: Rick Scott, President, Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation
WELCOME Congratulations to Rick Scott, who began his new role as President of Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation in April. Rick came to Presbyterian in 2012 from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and brings extensive fundraising experience – more than 21 years, primarily in healthcare – to the role. During his tenure at Presbyterian, Rick helped to grow the major and planned gifts program. He looks forward to working with Volunteer Services board and staff leadership, and advocating for volunteers and celebrating their contributions. Presbyterian Volunteer Services would like to thank past Presbyterian Foundation President Joe Rizza for his service and guidance to our department. We wish him well in his retirement!

• 30 private inpatient rooms featuring spacious design and views of the surrounding landscape • A six-bed family birthing suite complete with four labordelivery-recovery suites and two surgical suites • A 24/7 Emergency Department and Urgent Care with an innovative shared triage entrance to help patients access the appropriate level of care • Surgery and procedure suites for outpatient and short-stay surgeries • A rehabilitation facility offering physical, occupational and speech therapies as well as cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation
• Specialty medical services both at the medical center and at the Presbyterian Medical Group clinic on St. Michael’s Drive. • A hiking and biking trail that connects to miles of trails in the Los Soleras development • A healing pathway with special features for contemplation, relaxation and well-being • A cafeteria, gift shop, chapel, meeting space and a community demonstration kitchen, all available to the public • A rooftop healing garden adjacent to the inpatient floor • Numerous green building practices to increase energy efficiency and reduce water consumption
In addition to the facilities themselves, we have more than 60 new volunteers working in eight different service areas, including the new satellite gift shop. Located on the lower level across from the cafeteria, the gift shop offers fresh flowers and plants to honor any occasion, Presbyterian logo wear and a variety of snacks and drinks. Unique gift items include greeting cards, skin care items, purses, and locally made jewelry, some of which has been specifically created for Presbyterian.
Meet Annjenette Torres, Volunteer Manager at SFMC I am so excited to be a part of the Volunteer Manager Team and am beyond impressed with the amazing volunteers at Santa Fe Medical Center! I was born at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque and grew up in the SE heights. I am a Highland Hornet and a UNM Lobo. My son is 12 years old and we live in Santa Fe. After a wonderful career with state government, I retired and became a volunteer for the New Mexico Adaptive Sports Program teaching adults and children with disabilities to ski. I also volunteer for Santa Fe Public Schools. My hope is to grow our volunteer services in Santa Fe and exemplify our CARES commitments.

Presbyterian Gift Shops Expand Thanks to the talented and dedicated group of volunteers and staff who work in the Presbyterian Gift Shops, 2018 was a very good year. From the day-to-day operations of each shop, to annual tasks such as inventory and special holiday hours, these volunteers and staff have gone above
and beyond to meet the needs of our customers, patients and staff. For this and all that you do, we could not be more grateful. It is with high hopes and excitement that we look forward to new developments in 2019, including
working with the staff and volunteers at the new Presbyterian Santa Fe Medical Center Gift Shop. We are also in the process of rolling out a new point-of-sale system along with a new database that will enhance our volunteer-management capabilities.
Meet Carlos Ortiz, Presbyterian Hospital Gift Shop Manager I attended UNM where I earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. I worked for the Starbucks Coffee Co. for almost 16 years, where I was a store manager for eight years. I enjoy outdoor sports and cheer for my favorite teams – the Dallas Cowboys and the Boston Red Sox. I have been married to my amazing wife for almost 14 years. We have four kids ages 13, 10, eight and four. We homeschool all of them. I grew up in Roswell, New Mexico, and have been in Albuquerque since 1996.

VOLUNTEER NEWS Meet the 2019 PHS Volunteer Services Board of Directors Ann Leigh, Past Chairman and 2019 Ex-Officio Volunteer Tenure: 17+ years Volunteer Location: Surgery/Info Desk, Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital What do you enjoy most about volunteering? The people we meet and the atmosphere at Kaseman. What would you like the PHS Volunteer Services Board to accomplish in 2019? The use of more electronic communication for projects, applications, etc. What words of wisdom would you offer to new and veteran volunteers at your site? This site feels like a family and we welcome you!! What is your favorite season and why? At this point in time, I relish all of the different seasons and what each brings.
Richard McGrath, 2019 PHS Volunteer Services Chair Volunteer Tenure: Approximately 4 years Volunteer Location: PMG Rio Rancho (High Resort) What do you enjoy most about volunteering? The ability to talk in a relaxed and casual manner to individual patients, their waiting family members, friends, neighbors or other individuals who brought them to PMG. When we talk like this, many times it reveals how truly small our world really is. What would you like the PHS Volunteer Services Board to accomplish in 2019? The 2018 Volunteer Services Board set into motion progressive changes to policies, including additional monetary support for staff and volunteer scholarships by increasing individual amounts and the number of scholarships awarded. This Board created and funded a new endowment to support additional scholarships for staff (we will feature the details in a future newsletter). All this and much more was made possible as a result of the awesome efforts of the 2018 Volunteer Services Board of Directors, in cooperation with Presbyterian Healthcare Services, Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation and our volunteers. Considerable work and attention will be necessary in 2019 to finalize many of last year’s positive developments. Stay tuned! What words of wisdom would you offer to new and veteran volunteers at your site? A PMG clinic may seem to operate at a slower pace, but often offers more opportunities for personal interaction with patients and family than some of the busier locations. Consequently, many visitors, spouses, family and friends of patients may expect to simply sit and chat with a greeter. To me, this is the best and most rewarding aspect of these locations. What is your favorite season and why? Summer. Since landscaping is a hobby of mine, I can more often enjoy the fruits of my landscaping labors during the summer months.
Liz Martinez, 2019 Presbyterian Rust Medical Center Facility Representative Volunteer Tenure: 7 years Volunteer Location: Gift Shop, Rust Medical Center What do you enjoy most about volunteering? Meeting all the employees that come into the Gift Shop and all the friends I have made over the last seven years. What would you like the PHS Volunteer Services Board to accomplish in 2019? Provide more information about Volunteer Services at the different locations. What words of wisdom would you offer to new and veteran volunteers at your site? Enjoy your volunteer role. Make friends and get more involved in the Volunteer Services program. What is your favorite season and why? Spring – I love to garden!

VOLUNTEER NEWS Georgia Packard, 2019 PHS Volunteer Services Board Corresponding Secretary Volunteer Tenure: 3 years Volunteer Location: Child Life and NICU, Presbyterian Hospital What do you enjoy most about volunteering? Cuddling babies is very grounding and keeps you in the moment providing contact. The nurses, techs and doctors are very supportive. What would you like the PHS Volunteer Services Board to accomplish in 2019? Increase communication between volunteers and department heads in training, updates and services. Provide feedback. What words of wisdom would you offer to new and veteran volunteers at your site? It gets very warm wearing our gowns and gloves, but it’s totally worth it. Be sure to eat and drink plenty of water on your shift. Enjoy your time as a volunteer. Smile. People respond to your presence on duty. What is your favorite season and why? I enjoy Spring and hiking to see the earth blossoming again. It makes for great comparison photographs when hiking throughout the year.
Linda Potter, 2019 North Campus Facility Representative Volunteer Tenure: About 3.5 years Volunteer Location: Urgent Care, PMG Rio Rancho (High Resort) What do you enjoy most about volunteering? Organizing and stocking the exam and procedure rooms. I also assist the nurses by walking patients to x-ray and delivering patient specimens and blood samples to the lab. What would you like the PHS Volunteer Services Board to accomplish in 2019? I am brand new to the PHS Volunteer Services Board so am not sure what to expect. I’d like to identify at least two specific site improvements through recommendations identified by other volunteers. What words of wisdom would you offer to new and veteran volunteers at your site? Be aware that we have stuffed toys that can be handed out to young children in both Pediatrics and Adult Care. Mention they are made by volunteers and always smile. We want these children to leave Urgent Care with a face that lights up. What is your favorite season and why? I enjoy Summer, as that is when I can plant flowers in raised beds and pots which attract a community of hummingbirds, bees and roadrunners!
Roxanne Segura, 2019 Presbyterian Hospital Facility Representative Volunteer Tenure: Approximately 5 years. Candy-striper as a 16-year-old (many years ago). Volunteer Location: Lobby Ambassador, Presbyterian Hospital What do you enjoy most about volunteering? It is important to me as a volunteer to know that I make a difference in our patients’ and visitors’ hospital experience. I love what I do! What would you like the PHS Volunteer Services Board to accomplish in 2019? The PHS Volunteer Services Board has a very strong service history and continues to add value to the hospital patient experience. It would be my hope that the Board continues its great presence in the community and continues to support its fundraising initiatives to support our many projects that create a healing and healthy environment for our patients and their families! What words of wisdom would you offer to new and veteran volunteers at your site? Just remember that you make a difference every day and are greatly appreciated no matter how small the gesture! What is your favorite season and why? Winter is not my cup of tea, but I do enjoy the Fall as I am in a tennis league and the fall weather is perfect for tennis!

John Reich, 2019 Hospice Facility Representative Volunteer Tenure: 9 years Volunteer Location: Hospice Inpatient Unit, Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital What do you enjoy most about volunteering? I enjoy the varied duties I have, meeting other volunteers and greeting families while working on the unit. I enjoy helping the families feel comfortable as they go through the end-of-life process. I also enjoy helping with the administrative duties as this frees up management to work on more pressing tasks. What would you like the PHS Volunteer Services Board to accomplish in 2019? Continuing to define the non-nursing scholarship requirements and determining the winners. Helping with defining the needs for the community-based programs and seeing assistance efforts through to completion. Defining Hospice House needs and helping to meet them. Updating Board bylaws if needed, as well as updating aging documents for the Board and possibly having an online portal where documents can be easily stored, accessed and updated. What words of wisdom would you offer to new and veteran volunteers at your site? Always keep everyone informed and on the same page. Remember the mission and why we are here, make sure to engage all visitors at your assigned site and be of assistance when needed. What is your favorite season and why? Spring, when new growth is in progress and starting to develop, new goals are developing, projects are starting and plans for the new year are taking shape.
Loretta Tavelli, 2019 Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital Facility Representative Volunteer Tenure: 2.5 years Volunteer Location: Information/Post Op Recovery Desk and Sewing Hearts, Presbyterian Kaseman What do you enjoy most about volunteering where you do? Working with the patients, their families and the great surgical nurses. What would you like the PHS Volunteer Services Board to accomplish in 2019? Expand the number of volunteers – it is such a rewarding service to our community. What words of wisdom would you offer to new and veteran volunteers at your site? Have a positive attitude and smile for all you encounter. Have patience, acceptance and a sense of humor. Put yourself in the shoes of those you meet and work with. What is your favorite season and why? Fall – because I love the cooler crisp air full of the smell of green chile roasting, the beautiful golden aspens, the state fair, the multitude of balloons that decorate our sky, a new crop of crispy crunchy apples, and last, but not least, my birthday in November.

Spiritual Care Volunteers Needed at Rust Medical Center In an effort to enhance spiritual care outreach for patients, the Spiritual Care Team at Rust Medical Center (RMC) has developed a new Spiritual Care Ambassadors pilot program. During the 12-month pilot, Spiritual Care Ambassadors will visit newly admitted patients within 24 hours of admission, serving as the first face of Spiritual Care most patients see. What’s needed: The program will rely heavily on the services of volunteers. Seven volunteers will serve as Spiritual Care Ambassadors and another three or four volunteers who will be trained to cover for volunteers who are unable to come in for their shifts. Volunteers will participate in two four-hour training sessions.
• If the patient desires, notify the patient’s clergy or spiritual leader that they have been hospitalized • Offer prayer if the patient is open to it. Prayer books specific to different religions and spiritual traditions will be available to volunteers. • Visit with the patient if he/she so desires
Spiritual Care Ambassador Duties
Following the Spiritual Care Ambassador’s visit with the patient, Mary Catherine Casey, RMC Spiritual Care Team member, will handle spiritual care assessments, interventions and outcomes. An RMC Spiritual Care Team member will conduct exit interviews to assess the effectiveness of the spiritual care provided and to reassess the patient with the same spiritual screening tool used upon admission.
• Introduce Spiritual Care Services (provide a brochure) to newly admitted patients • Complete a simple spiritual screening • Make a referral to the Spiritual Care Team based on the results of the spiritual screening • Ensure the accuracy of the patient’s religious affiliation in their medical record

If the pilot achieves anticipated results, the program may be expanded to RMC’s Adult Progressive Care units and Medical Specialty Unit. Eventually, the Spiritual Care Department would like to make the program available at Presbyterian Hospital.
