These are challenging times, to be sure. COVID-19 has sent shockwaves throughout our country and our community, threatening the health of millions, plunging the stock market to record lows and creating enormous stress on our healthcare delivery system. As a nation and an organization, we are navigating completely uncharted territory, relying upon the expertise, knowledge, compassion, resiliency and creativity of each other to find a path forward. Just as our providers and staff have risen to the challenge of caring for our patients and members, we at Presbyterian are grateful for a community that has rallied around us during some of the most critical periods in our history. During Presbyterian’s earliest days as a fledgling sanatorium known as “The San,” postcards from Mrs. Van asking for $1 donations were common. More recently, donors stepped forward following the Great Recession of 2007-2009 to complete the $20 million campaign for Presbyterian Rust Medical Center.

FULFILLING Dreams A joint message from Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation’s Board Chair and President
Some people dream big, while others dream about small things that make a big difference. The same holds true for philanthropy in all its shapes and sizes, whether that means time, talent or treasure. In this issue, we’re pleased to highlight the Trythalls, whose significant gift will make the Presbyterian Duane and Barbara Trythall Aquatic Therapy Natatorium a reality that benefits countless people for years to come. The new warm water therapy pool is a dream come true for staff, patients and community members who will benefit from improving their physical strength within a caring social network.

Many of our donors have the vision to imagine what today’s commitment and investments can look like long after they’re gone. For some, the gift of their lifetime is part their estate plan. Others are drawn to support the construction of new facilities that benefit the community by improving access to excellent care. While larger gifts like those from the Trythalls move the needle faster, smaller gifts have an important cumulative impact. Donor support for nursing scholarships is a great example. It’s been said that perhaps the best gift we can give our patients is a well-trained, compassionate workforce. When nurses and other staff have the support and encouragement they need to pursue continuing education, everybody wins. We are always grateful for thoughtful gifts that can create a permanent legacy for generations to come. Leaving a Legacy Endowment Ensures Future of Cardiology Lectureship
A Gift of the
HEART Presented by Presbyterian Heart and Vascular Care and Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation, the conference is specifically designed for internists, family practitioners, emergency room physicians, advanced practice professionals, nurses, pharmacists and clinicians who are involved in the care of patients with cardiac conditions, primarily in clinical and hospital settings.
As a cardiologist, Dan Friedman, MD, holds education close to his heart. Twenty-five years ago, when he returned to his hometown of Albuquerque to practice at Presbyterian, he was invited to speak at the John N. Wilson, MD, Lectureship in Cardiovascular Diseases. He found the annual conference, which focuses on the practical and clinical issues cardiac healthcare professionals face on a daily basis, to be extremely valuable to his profession and the patients he serves. He has since been an active member of the Wilson Cardiology Lectureship Committee, including many years as its chair.

“It’s an opportunity to educate our community regarding topics in cardiology. Putting on our own conference allows participants to help those in our own community,” Dr. Friedman says. “It also helps me learn a lot and I enjoy interacting with speakers and attendees - it’s a gift.” As a loyal donor for nearly 20 years, Dr. Friedman began to consider making his own legacy gift commitment to the Foundation, with a focus on educational programs that could continue in perpetuity. He also recognized that many Wilson conference attendees do not have the resources to travel for major educational programming, so the Wilson Lectureship fills an important void for educational opportunities for cardiologists right here in New Mexico. Through a gift in his will, The Daniel B. Friedman, MD, Endowment will be established to support necessary expenses needed to conduct the two-day event, including registration fees for attendees, speaker fees and travel expenses, venue costs, as well as food and catering. Dr. Friedman’s personal philosophy toward philanthropy goes back to his own family. “My parents have always been very generous to charities and in particular, those close to home.”
The John N. Wilson, MD, Lectureship in Cardiovascular Diseases, established in 1985, recognizes the extraordinary medical and humanitarian achievements of John N. Wilson, MD, one of the first heart surgeons at Presbyterian and the physician credited for launching Presbyterian’s heart surgery program.
The Daniel B. Friedman, MD, Endowment reflects Dr. Friedman’s passion for sustaining excellence in cardiology through education. In addition to seeing patients, he serves on the Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation board of directors and the Committee for Laughter is the Best Medicine, Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation’s annual event that raises funds for a different Presbyterian program each year.

Pursuing Excellence Nursing Scholarships

Since 2006, Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation’s nursing scholarships have supported more than 750 nurses through scholarships totaling $855,550. In 2019, a record number of applicants – 114 – received $75,000 in funding toward their professional nursing goals. Every eligible applicant receives some level of educational support. Nurses increasingly use the scholarships to pursue advanced degrees in administration, as nurse practitioners, and even doctorate degrees.

Supporting nurses through education is an important investment that ultimately benefits the entire organization as well as Presbyterian patients. “Many recipients express their appreciation for what the scholarships really mean to them, to their families and to the patients they serve. It is really amazing,” Johanna says. According to the American Association of the Colleges of Nursing, nurses who have earned their Bachelor of Science (BSN)
degree or higher in nursing produce better patient outcomes, including lower mortality rates, and their organizations have higher retention. As part of its nursing strategy, Presbyterian is encouraging and supporting nurses to pursue their BSN if they do not already have it and is committed to achieving the national goal of increasing the number of bachelor’s-prepared nurses to 80 percent.
The nursing scholarship program is now in its 14th year through the support of generous donors. Just as the number of applicants has grown, so has the need. “We’ve had new donors come on board, which has been absolutely wonderful and powerful,” Johanna says. “Having more funds available allows us to keep publicizing the program, encourage applicants, demonstrate the value to the organization and take care of the people in our communities. It also makes Presbyterian competitive
with other healthcare providers when it comes to recruiting and retaining nurses.” The need for educational scholarship funds continues to increase as the number of patients served by Presbyterian increases and the number of applicants for the support grows. Presbyterian strives to be at the forefront of patient care and outcomes. Recruiting, retaining and training nurses makes that possible.
Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation’s nursing scholarships program provides nursing staff with opportunities to advance their educational preparation through academic nursing degrees. Nurses make up the largest segment of Presbyterian Healthcare Services employees; more than 3,400 nurses serve in a variety of roles.

FORWARD After repeated visits to New Mexico for decades, Andy Wallerstein seized on the opportunity to buy a company and move his family from the East Coast to Santa Fe in the mid-2000s. Today, they are happy to make their home in a community they love. In his role as chief executive officer and partner of Avalon Trust, an investment firm and wealth planning practice, Andy counsels a variety of individuals, families, trusts, non-profits and foundations in New Mexico and beyond.

“Our company culture is focused on giving back to our community,” Andy says. “To hire the best people, we have to offer good healthcare, good education and affordable housing. When we do that, we lift everybody up.”
And he believes it’s important for everyone in the community to play their part. “It’s not just a small group of people who make these things happen. This was my one small way of doing something I could do to help, but everyone has something to contribute,” he says.

Presbyterian has reached 100+ years and we all assume the hospitals, schools and key institutions in Santa Fe have always been here, but a dedicated group had to take that first step,” Andy says. “It’s like planting a tree; if you don’t do it, it won’t be there for your children or your grandchildren.” While Andy has been lucky in terms of his own health, he recognizes that having better healthcare options can significantly help the Santa Fe community reach its potential.
By making a general gift toward construction of the Santa Fe Medical Center, Andy and his wife, Mary Sloane, made it possible for Presbyterian to use the funds where they were needed most.

While many of our Guardian Angel honorees are clinical staff, any Presbyterian Healthcare Services employee may receive the recognition. The following profiles offer a glimpse into the ways these Presbyterian employees have left a lasting impression on patients and their families. Jennifer Ard
Surgical Services Patient Liaison Presbyterian Hospital Joined Presbyterian: 2014 Earned her Guardian Angel wings: July 2019 Sometimes preparing for surgery can leave patients feeling anxious and uncertain. That’s where Jennifer steps in. She is often the smiling face accompanying patients and their families into the pre-op department. She knows her job is an important one and makes a special effort to be friendly, patient, compassionate and knowledgeable.
“I enjoy the conversations with people and learning about them. I also enjoy providing some comfort and reassurance that all will be okay,” she says. Jennifer has two adult children and a 12-year-old grandson. She enjoys camping, gardening, walks on the Bosque and playing outside with her dogs.

Patient Registrar Presbyterian Medical Group, Kaseman Hospital Joined Presbyterian: 2017 Earned her Guardian Angel wings: May 2017 Amber is passionate about her work in behavioral health. Her goal is to always practice kindness and sensitivity to help make her patients feel comfortable from the first interaction. Sometimes patients share that they experience cautious or hesitant behavior from others around them, but Amber is different; she recognizes that her patients are all special and unique in their own way. “When my patients check in with me, I always greet them with their name and a smile. I let them know that they are safe and in a loving place. I also make it a point to ask them about their personal lives so they know that I care about them as a person,” she says. Outside of work, Amber enjoys camping and fishing, but says her first love is spending time with her family.
Nika Lane
Housekeeper Environmental Services, Presbyterian Hospital Joined Presbyterian: 2014 Earned her Guardian Angel wings: September 2017 Fondly known as “the singing housekeeper,” Nika has brightened the day for many of her patients and their families. When she enters a patient’s room to clean, she is often singing and her lively, engaging conversation adds a much-needed dose of cheer to what can be long, mundane days. “I love my supervisors, my patients and my staff. I love to be here at Presbyterian because they took care of me and my son in a time of need,” says Nika. When she’s not at work, Nika enjoys spending time outside, especially camping and fishing.

Speech Pathologist Physical Therapy department, Rust Medical Center Joined Presbyterian: 2017 Earned his Guardian Angel wings: November 2018 As a speech pathologist, Aaron plays a key role in bridging the gap between research and clinical practice. He recognizes that every patient is unique and finding an intervention that works best for his or her needs is the top priority. That requires interviewing, staying current on published literature in the field, consulting with clinicians, and helping patients understand what outcomes they can expect, all of which informs their decision about the path of care. “I do my best to provide assurance in a time of uncertainty, and assurance during the days and experiences to come,” Aaron says. In his free time, Aaron is active in the community and church. He also enjoys reading and being in nature.

On a typical day at the Presbyterian Healthplex, between 800 to 1,000 people participate in some form of therapy – physical, occupational, speech and language, or cardiopulmonary – or exercise classes. Thanks to a $1.6 million gift from Barbara and Duane Trythall, the Healthplex will soon have a new, warm water pool, the Presbyterian Rehabilitation Services Duane and Barbara Trythall Aquatic Therapy Natatorium, allowing people to do aquatic rehabilitation, community classes and open swim. The number of Healthplex users is expected to double when the expanded facility opens in 2021.

The Future Presbyterian Trythall Natatorium
“The thing about water is that the buoyancy allows a freedom of movement that is difficult to achieve on land, so physical movement becomes easier,” says Janeice Ross, an occupational therapist and manager of rehab and aquatics at Presbyterian Healthplex. “Someone who may need a wheelchair or walker on land can move much more easily in water. It opens up a whole new realm of functional movement and people get really hooked on it.”
The early days Barb and Duane were born and raised in the small Wyoming tourist town of Cody. They became high school sweethearts at 16, and will soon celebrate their 54th wedding anniversary. After moving to Albuquerque, they owned an executive search business and later, Excel Staffing, the largest temporary and contract staffing company in New Mexico. Over the years, their company employed more than 60,000 New Mexico residents. They sold the business in 2014 after 43 years. The couple has always loved being outdoors, skiing, hiking, fishing and camping. Physical activity has been a big part of

A philanthropic philosophy The Trythalls believe that everyone has a responsibility to be philanthropic, and they emphasize supporting local organizations for the greatest impact. As they struggled to establish their own businesses, they gave when they could, often more time than money. Both have also been active in many community organizations, including 25 years of service on the Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation Board for Barb. They have prioritized education in their
In addition to the new natatorium, the Trythalls’ gift funds scholarships and educational opportunities to support the recruitment and retention of EEG (electroencephalographic) technicians for the Presbyterian Neurosciences program. Their gift helps fill a void caused by a shortage of certified technicians and will make it possible for medical assistants and pulmonary technicians to complete a certification program.
