According to Services and Advocacy for Gay,
Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Elders
(SAGE), the country’s largest and oldest
organization dedicated to serving the aging
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT)
population, LGBT older adults are at a
disproportionate risk for social isolation and
poor health outcomes based on the following
risk factors. They are twice as likely to live
alone and be single; and almost four times less
likely to have children than their heterosexual
peers. They also have higher rates of disability
and poverty. Furthermore, they often face
challenges with mental health, location-related
barriers, discrimination, and stigma.
