Marian Seymour

Resident stays sharp with word online games, puzzles, teasers iPad games are part of Marian Seymour’s daily routine.

When the independent living resident first began using the device, her cousins encouraged her to download Words with Friends. It’s similar to the board game Scrabble, and users can play with friends or strangers. Marian enjoys playing against family members who live “all over,” including Illinois, Iowa and South Dakota. Though she can hold her own in the game, “a couple of my cousins slaughter me,” she said. Words with Friends is one of the most popular mobile games of all time, partly because it allows users to be social; you can exchange written messages with your opponent using the chat feature. “It feels like you’re connecting, even though half the time you’re playing and not chatting,” Marian said.

“Everyone is super excited. It’s going to be beautiful,” said Rosemary Dahlgren, marketing and sales director. “At the same time, residents are very anxious for it to be done.” The $1.6 million project will transform large parts of the campus, including a renovated lobby, dining areas and decorative elements. Harbin Construction, which serves as the general contractor for the project, began work in January. Rose said the Assisted Living residents are looking forward to the new dining room, while residents in Independent Living are looking forward to hanging out in the new RENO - continued on page 2

lounge and library where they can read, play games and work puzzles.

Marian also enjoys reading her Facebook feed and playing solitaire on her iPad.

After a stressful few months, the completed project will be a reason for the community to celebrate.

She recommends games for other residents who are looking for something to do.

The main entrance has been closed during construction. Soon, residents will enjoy easier access thanks to new automatic doors.

“It’s one step closer to feeling normal,” Rose said. ◆

Workers installed a decorative balcony screen last month.

“If they have a computer or iPad, word games help with memory,” she noted. Marian also keeps her mind active by reading. She enjoys novels, and participates in the book club at Topeka Presbyterian Manor. Right now, she’s working through about 20 books her brother passed to her. With social distancing guidelines in place, Marian says games are simply part of her daily routine. ◆

Residents are looking forward to gathering in the renovated lounge and library.

New automatic sliding doors will open into a renovated lobby area.
