Healthier you

Like many, I tend to focus on eating healthier foods as each new year approaches. It must be that new year “feeling” of wanting to turn Sloan Dwyer over a new leaf in order to feel better, to be better. In order to remain healthy, one must focus on a diet full of fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and plenty of liquids. Eliminating a surplus of sugary drinks and snacks will prove to be beneficial.

Unfortunately, we must realize that our daily diet can’t be driven by what we prefer to eat but by what we “need” to eat. Emphasis must be placed on the realization that disease and conditions can be inhibited or reduced by simply making healthier choices about what we put into our mouths.

The most important part of creating a healthier you is to make changes that will last your entire life. New year diets only allow for short term changes. We must be willing to change our lifestyle in order to live long healthy lives. Make it a habit to grab healthy snacks and to add more water to your diet. Make that lifestyle change today!

Celebrating our dining department

Even though we eat every day, and appreciate those who help make that possible, we take special time in March to celebrate Nutrition Month. Ruth Haile, dining services director, shared with us why preparing food for the residents of Parsons Presbyterian Manor is so much more than just checking all the nutritional boxes.

“When residents and their Ruthe Haile, dining services director, tries to family members dine with sure all residents get the meals they us, we want them to feel like make enjoy. it’s home. We have a menu residents can order from, and ‘always available’ options for those days when they’d rather not order from that day’s menu. We offer a lot of options and prepare the food fresh and homemade. Residents often give feedback and suggestions, and we’re always tweaking and improving to meet their desires.” So, what’s the most-requested dish?

“Believe it or not, everyone loves good, old-fashioned meatloaf. Our comfort foods are always a popular option.”

One thing many residents and family members might not be aware of is the dining department’s ability to cater for any event they may be having on the campus. “We’ve prepared food for many family and community gatherings here.” Thank you to our wonderful dining department for not only nourishing our bodies but our hearts and souls as well!

March is for making! We have a fun month of making crafts and treats. Mark your calendars:

March 1: Joining us in learning how to make a burlap St. Patrick’s Day wreath

March 8: We’re nuts for peanuts! Come learn how to make peanut clusters.

March 20: Help us get ready for warmer weather with Slide into Spring Day as we plant flowers.

March 29: Yum Crumb Day—NewYork Crumb Cake to Make

Administrative Assistant Nicohle Bushnell had this to say about all of the activities that take place at Parsons Presbyterian Manor, “Being pretty new here, I really enjoy how Jasmine Edie, activities director, thinks outside the box with the activities she plans for the residents. I also enjoy how some of the activities are things they would have actually been doing in their everyday life prior to moving here.”

Art for the ages

The Parsons area is well known for its appreciation of the arts, especially when it comes to Art is Ageless®. This annual exhibit and competition which features art from those age 65 and older takes place at Parsons Presbyterian Manor. This year, the leadership team decided to take that a step further by putting on an art auction for artists of all ages to benefit the Good Samaritan Program.

“Over the years, the Parsons Art is Ageless program has continued to grow. There is an unbelievable amount of talent in Southeast Kansas, and some of the local artists, including Presbyterian Manor Mission Committee member, Joan Allen, expressed an interest in donating a piece of art that could be auctioned for our Good Samaritan Program,” said Maegen Pegues, executive director. “With her support, as well as many other local artists, the idea came to fruition. We are extremely excited about this first event and look forward to growing it in future years. The fact that this is an extension of our Art is Ageless program is just icing on the cake.”

We invite you to join us at 6 p.m. on June 13 at Carnegie Arts Center as we auction a variety of pieces ranging from paintings to photography to furniture to quilts and more! There will be a “sip and see” with appetizers that begins at 6 p.m. The live auction begins at 6:45 p.m. Contact Sloan Dwyer or Maegen Pegues for more information at 620-421-1450.

Proceeds from the auction will remain local, supporting Parsons Presbyterian Manor residents who have outlived their financial resources. More about the Good Samaritan Program:

Founded by the first administrator of what was then known as the United Presbyterian Foundation, the Good Samaritan Program provides funding to assist residents who outlive their financial resources through no fault of their own. Thanks to this critical program, Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America (PMMA) is proud to say that no person has ever been asked to leave one of our communities based on their inability to pay. In 2018, the Parsons Presbyterian Manor Good Samaritan need was $48,000.

Parsons Presbyterian Manor’s Art is Ageless® exhibit and reception features senior artists Since the beginning of time, creative expression has brought joy to both its creators and those who experience their art. The Art is Ageless® program offers senior artists the opportunity to share and display their artwork and reaffirms the agelessness of human creativity. Next month, their works are on display at Parsons Presbyterian Manor. The deadline to enter is April 3. “It’s inspiring to see the beautiful pieces these seniors have created,” said Sloan Dwyer, Sales and Marketing

Director. “The joy it brings to them and others is wonderful, and that’s something we want to celebrate and share with the entire Parsons community.”

The Art is Ageless exhibit will feature works from local artists who are 65 and older, including a few Aberdeen Heights residents. The public is welcome to visit the community to view the exhibit of acrylics, oils, photography and various other mediums, ranging from amateur to professional levels. The exhibit is

open April 8 – 11, 2019, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

In addition to the exhibit, Parsons Presbyterian Manor will honor local senior artists during a reception at the community April 11 at 6:30 p.m.
