Despite ‘bumpy’ transition, Keith Brown sees bright future for dining services Recently, Salina Presbyterian Manor partnered with Cura Hospitality to deliver dining services. “We’ve been through a lot of changes during my time here, but this is by far the biggest transition,” said Keith Brown, dining services director. “We’re definitely hitting some bumps along the way, but we’re adjusting as quickly as we can.” Keith wants Presbyterian Manor residents and their families to understand that the move is not a cost-cutting measure, but part of an effort to improve dining services in all PMMA communities. “It’s important to note that the decision to bring Cura in was based on resident and family surveys, which had low scores for dining services,” he said. “We’re doing this for them and not for any other reason.”

Cura has been providing dining services support to congregate living communities for more than 25 years. Keith says that some of what they bring to the table include fresher menus and more professional nutritional guidance. They can also provide staffing support for larger events. However, Keith notes that Presbyterian Manor is not yet at full capacity with Cura.

Grace Hilbert Employee of the Month
Employee of the Month:
Grace Hilbert Congratulations to Grace Hilbert, employee of the month for November. She has worked for Salina Presbyterian Manor for one year and is currently one of our activities assistants. Grace is still happily dating her high school sweetheart, Jones. The couple has been together for three years. She has two dogs, Ted and Martin. In her spare time, Grace likes to create art and scrapbook. She also enjoys traveling and doing spontaneous things for fun. When asked what most people would not know about her, she said that she loves it when people talk for animals — she thinks it’s so funny! Grace is taking online college classes to become a special education teacher. She loves animals, staying busy and being around people. She is the oldest child of her siblings, making them a family of five. We are beyond proud to have to Grace on the Salina Presbyterian Manor team! Please congratulate Grace when you see her. u

Salina Presbyterian Manor issues Art is Ageless® call for entries Artists age 65 and older are sought for the annual Art is Ageless® juried exhibit sponsored by Salina Presbyterian Manor March 8 – 10, 2022. This year, due to COVID-19, the exhibit will be at Homewood Suites by Hilton, Salina Downtown, 115 E. Mulberry, Salina, Kansas. Entries of artistic works will be accepted from any area artist who is 65 years of age or older to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the 2023 Art is Ageless calendar. Artists may choose to enter works for exhibit only. For the competition, works must be completed after age 65 and have been completed in the past five years (since January 2017). There are nine categories, as well as designations of amateur or professional. Entries are due to Salina Presbyterian Manor, 2601 E. Crawford, by 5 p.m. February 18. Local competition winners will join winners from 14 other PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America®) communities to be judged at the systemwide level. Prior to the Cura transition, Keith and the dining services team worked with a menu-planning company that also offered nutritional guidance. However, a lot of his time was spent managing the clinical side of dining services. Within the new system, the dining service director will be able to focus more on the preparation and presentation of residents’ meals. “I’m passionate about food, and now I will be able to put more of my focus on the kitchen and work with my staff to prepare meals, as much as we can from scratch, and also to focus on the way we’re presenting the food,” he said. Going forward, the dining services team will work directly for Cura, but the close relationships the team builds with residents won’t change. “The dynamic really won’t change,” said Christian Gilbert, executive director. “We have several long-time team members. Switching to Cura hasn’t changed anything about those relationships or the relationships with residents.” Keith says he’s grateful to his staff for the hard work they’ve put in during the transition. They have all had to fight through staffing shortages, which have been widespread throughout the food service industry. “Being short staffed and trying to run a new program is challenging, but there’s also never a good time to
do certain things,” he said. “I’m just trying to keep staff and residents cool-headed while we go through these changes, because, ultimately, it’s going to benefit the whole community.”

Soup Supper update Thanks again to everyone who supported our Soup Supper fundraising campaign this year. All proceeds will benefit the Good Samaritan Program, which provides assistance to Salina Presbyterian Manor residents who outlive their financial resources through no fault of their own. In addition to the people and organizations we thanked in the December newsletter, Dennis and Martha Oakes donated at the Bowl of Comfort level ($1,000–$2,499).
