Thank a therapist! National Therapy Week is Sept. 19-25, but we’re thankful all year-round for the exceptional members of our Aegis Therapies® team at Aberdeen Village. Team member Trish Bahr, director of rehabilitation and certified physical therapy assistant, explains that therapy is an important tool to enhance quality of life and shorten the amount of time it takes to restore a patient to full independence after a surgery or accident. “Therapy can provide a range of services, including but not limited to general strengthening, assistance with transfers, walking, helping with getting dressed and self-care and hygiene issues, pain management, memory, problem-solving, the ability to recall information, medication management, urinary incontinence, improving activity tolerance, breathing techniques, coping techniques for depression and anxiety with behavior modifications, and swallowing assistance,” Trish said. “Overall, the role of therapy is to provide improvement or modification to your normal routine to increase independence.” The work a therapist does can help patients make changes to daily routines in order to realize the best health possible. In honor of National Read a Book Day on Sept. 6, Aberdeen Village is exploring ways to help you incorporate more reading into your life. Here are some fun ways to get back into or find a little more time for reading: Read a little bit at a time. The wonderful thing about reading is that you can do it on your own schedule! It doesn’t have to be for hours on end. It could just be a little bit here and there. Whenever you are bored or waiting on something (or someone), just pick up your book and read! Keep a book in your bag. If you carry a bag with you, bring your book along for the ride! That makes it a lot easier to read a little bit at a time if you always have a book with you. Check out audiobooks. Do you like to read but just aren’t able to see the fine print as easily anymore? There are many audiobooks that you can listen to, and they are in all types of formats. There are books on tape, CDs or even apps on your phone. AudioBooks.com is a good place to start. Choose books you like. That may sound too easy, but don’t feel pressured to keep reading a book you aren’t enjoying. There is something to be said for trying new genres or authors. But I usually try three chapters at least, and if I’m still Turning pages – continued on page 4

Start or join a book club. It can be so much fun to discuss books you’re reading with others. It can be a way to make new friends also! It helps keep you accountable to reading, too. Still, it should be fun and not a chore. Make sure you enjoy yourself. u
