Supporting your spiritual needs JANUARY 2022
Resident Nancy Schulz finds friendship, fullness at Aberdeen Village When Nancy Schulz moved to Aberdeen Village in August, she was happy to have less to worry about. “I was having trouble keeping up with the house,” she said. “It was a very large house, and I had a stroke and open-heart surgery this year. I didn’t really do much. My sons did it all, and they were getting tired of it.” Since moving to independent living at the campus, Nancy has found a lot of good things about her new home.

“I love it here,” she said. “The food is good. I love my room and my view. The people are wonderful, and the nurses are too. The transition was good. It’s nice to not have a big home.” The meatballs are her favorite meal, she said. Before the move to Aberdeen Village, Nancy lived with her husband, Chuck, in Overland Park for 35 years. In the years before settling in Overland Park, Chuck’s career as an Air Force pilot led them throughout the country, including Tuscon, Ariz.; Sacramento, Calif.; South Korea; and Myrtle Beach, S.C. “The trouble with that was it closed down after Labor Day, and you couldn’t find any shells after that,” Nancy said. “But it was lovely to be able to go down to the beach whenever you wanted to. I was there in 1979, and it’s gotten much more popular. They’ve doubled the number of golf courses. The big thing to do was play golf, and we didn’t play golf. We didn’t have time to learn; we had two kids then.” Nowadays, Nancy enjoys the opportunity to visit with her four children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. “Believe it or not, all my kids live in the area,” she said. “The furthest one is in Lawrence.”

Whether you are with us for just a few weeks receiving rehabilitation services in Aberdeen Plaza or you consider Aberdeen Village your permanent home, I pray for God’s rich blessing on your time here. My name is Diane Gunsolley. As full-time chaplain, I lead the spiritual care department, which includes Chaplain Diane volunteers Gunsolley living here as well as community volunteers and local clergy. We are here to come alongside you on your faith journey with ministry as unique as you are. The key question is: What spiritual practices are important to you? If you value attending a Sunday service, come to Aberdeen Family Church. We offer two services upholding the worship of God and unity among Christians of all faith backgrounds. In addition to these services, we offer weekly Roman Catholic services and simulcast both the Sunday services at Village Presbyterian Church and the College Church of the Nazarene.

As a relatively new resident of Aberdeen Village, Nancy has quickly made friends and connected with staff members. “The people at the end of the hall have been superb,” Nancy said. “They brought me food because I haven’t been able to get out. We go to dinner together. They ring my doorbell as they go by to let me know they’re going to dinner. They’ve been here a while, and I can ask them questions. There are a lot of very busy people on this floor. Many are on the resident council and stuff like that. They are eager to help and answer any questions I have. People have asked me to sit with them for dinner, and I hadn’t met them before. They are open and want to tell me about them and ask me about me. They’re sweethearts.” She also remarked on the hard work and dedication of the staff. She has noticed that everyone from the department heads on down works to make sure residents have what they need. When Nancy thinks back on her life, she finds a great deal of
big part of it. I learned a lot about the country. I love mountains, and the first time I saw them was when we drove out of Denver and turned a corner and there they were. Seeing the mountains for the first time was something I’ll never forget.” u

National Spaghetti Day In honor of National Spaghetti Day on Jan. 4, get together with friends or loved ones and enjoy this delicious recipe for spaghetti and meatballs. For the sauce: g 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil g 1 cup finely diced onion g 2-3 minced garlic cloves g 4 1/2 cups tomato sauce (I used one 29 ounce can and one 8 ounce can) g 2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste g 4 (6 ounce) cans water (use the tomato paste cans to measure out your water) g 2 teaspoons salt g 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper g 3 tablespoons sugar g 1.5 teaspoons dried basil g 1.5 teaspoons dried oregano
size. To pan fry, use a large skillet with olive oil. You will most likely have to do this in several batches, depending on the size of your skillet. You will not want meatballs to be completely cooked, just browned around the outside. Add meatballs to simmering sauce for the last hour of sauce cooking time. Enjoy over your favorite pasta. u

Over the past two years, U.S. News changed its focus from the CMS star ratings to specific quality measures for short-term rehabilitation and long-term care. The 10 quality measures focus on staffing, outcomes, resident complaints and processes of care. Some of the measures used by U.S. News are not included in the CMS approach to determining 5-star ratings. This year’s ratings include some new requirements for a community to earn a High-Performing rating – most notably that federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) data published by October 14 must list the location as having a COVID-19 staff vaccination rate of at least 75 percent. As a result, only 13 percent of skilled nursing and short-term rehabilitation centers earned even a single Best Nursing Homes badge. “PMMA® employees continue to focus their efforts on delivering quality care every day,” said PMMA President and CEO Bruce Shogren. “Never have those efforts been put to the test more than during the past

The High Performing designation is a tremendous accomplishment and recognition of their good work.” U.S. News added the Short-Term Rehabilitation rating in 2018 evaluating the care delivered to patients after a hospitalization for surgery, heart attack, stroke, injury or similar condition. In 2019, U.S. News added a Long-Term Care rating evaluating the care delivered to residents who are no longer able to live independently and need help with daily activities such as eating, getting in or out of bed or a wheelchair, using stairs, or getting dressed, as well as administering needed medical care.
In order to be included on the U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Homes list, a skilled nursing center had to receive the High Performing designation in either the short-term rehabilitation or longterm care categories. All Medicare- and Medicaid-certified health care centers were evaluated by U.S. News. To be eligible for an overall rating, a center must have received reimbursement from CMS in July 2021 and had sufficient data to evaluate quality in that rating. This is the third consecutive year and the seventh time the community has been on the U.S. News and World Report Best Nursing Homes list since 2011. In addition to Aberdeen Village, three PMMA locations are on the honoree list with high-performing designation for long-term care:
