PMMA celebrates history with Founder’s Day PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America®) employees will observe the founding of the senior living system this month as the company celebrates its 73-year history of serving seniors in Kansas and Missouri. PMMA’s roots go back to 1947. Alice Kalb, a widow from central Kansas, appealed to a Presbyterian Church Alice Kalb participated in the organization to establish a home for groundbreaking for the first seniors. Her vision laid the foundation Presbyterian Manor. for the first Presbyterian Manor community in Newton, Kan., and inspired others to do even more. Through the many decades, PMMA® remained true to the spirit of Alice’s vision, providing quality senior services guided by Christian values. Each Founder’s Day, staff members re-commit to live our mission by signing the “WE PROMISE” board that lists the pillars of the mission: respecting that seniors retain their rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; assisting residents with specific needs; providing compassionate service; serving as a trusted resource; and advocating for seniors. “Our nearly 2,000 employees view what they do as a calling,” said Bruce Shogren, president and CEO. “Our dedicated employees make it possible for us to sustain PMMA’s mission, as well as its heritage. I believe Alice would be very proud.” Alice Kalb’s dream has turned into a network of 15 senior living communities and two hospices across Kansas and Missouri. A new senior living community is under development in Colorado Springs. PMMA remains true to its core and mission: to provide quality senior services guided by Christian values. Icela DeLuna
Congratulations to Icela DeLuna, employee of the month for March. She has worked for Salina Presbyterian Manor for two and a half years and is currently one of our housekeepers. Icela is a proud “fur mom” to one fur baby: Brady the English bulldog, who is two and a half years old. In her spare time, Icela likes listening to crime and paranormal podcasts while online shopping. When asked what most people would not know about her, she said she is the youngest of four children, and she likes to collect sneakers. Her most expensive acquisition is a pair of limited-edition Crocs. She also likes to collect socks and has a pair for every holiday. We think her closet must be a sight to see! We are beyond proud to have to Icela on the Presbyterian Manor team. Please congratulate Icela when you see her. u

Mary’s Musings:
Touching someone’s heart for a second can touch their soul for a lifetime By Mary Bridges, chaplain
Our 25-year-old grandson recently came for a visit. In March of 2020, he moved back to Boston where he grew up. The onset of the pandemic changed his circumstances, and he spent most of the past two years homeless. As he shared his experiences, it became apparent that he feels hopeless about the state of the world. This may be partially due to the difference in our ages and our life experiences, and it can’t help that Americans have become polarized on numerous issues. After our visit, I spent some time Googling words and phrases that came up in our conversation. My searches led me to a 1991 song by Michael Jackson called “Heal the World.” Here are some of my favorite lines: “There’s a place in your heart/ And I know that it is love/ And this place could be much brighter than tomorrow/ In this place, you’ll feel there’s no hurt or sorrow … Heal the world/ Make it a better place/For you and for me and the entire human race/ There are people dying/ If you care enough for the living/ Make a better place for you and for me.” My grandson and I spent some time trying to agree about the most important events in history. In a few weeks, Christians around the world will once again celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It’s my belief that this is the number one, most world-changing event, which is the cornerstone of our Christian faith. I close with this verse from Romans 15:13, which is one of my go-to verses

Excuse our mess as assisted living, health care areas undergo renovation
Employees and residents in the assisted living and health care neighborhoods are looking forward to the completion of renovations that will bring new carpeting and replace the old wallpaper with a fresh coat of paint.
Life has been more hectic than usual over the past few weeks while the health care and assisted living neighborhoods are being renovated. “We’re really trying to modernize our health care and assisted living areas because they were looking a bit dated,” said Christian Gilbert, executive director at Salina Presbyterian Manor. Christian said it was time for the old wallpaper and carpet to go. “In June I will have been here for two years, and all I’ve heard about is the terrible wallpaper,” he joked. Christian worked with an architecture firm to select an updated color scheme and new vinyl plank flooring for both areas. When the renovation is complete, the assisted living neighborhood will also have new lighting and artwork. The health care area will also have new furniture, and a new 50-inch television has already been installed
in the common area. Resident and staff protests did put a halt to one aspect of the renovation: The collection of crosses on the “green wall” in the health care area will stay. Over the years, employees, residents and family members have donated more than 30 crosses to add to the wall. Instead of replacing them, they will be reinstalled once the wall is repainted.

“It’s been known as the green wall for as long as anyone can remember,” Christian said. “We’ll still call it the green wall even though it won’t be green anymore.” The design firm RDG handled the renovation, which Christian estimates will cost more than $100,000 when everything is complete. “It’s been a lot of fun for me and for the staff, too,” Christian said. “It’s
